The Great LGBTQ+ Migration Has Already Started

Most people just haven't noticed it yet.

The biggest shift happening in LGBTQ+ travel right now isn't travel at all.

It's migration.

A few weeks ago, I was talking with a PrideNomad reader who was considering Portugal.

Not moving.

Not retiring.

Not becoming a digital nomad.

Just considering it.

And that's when it hit me.

For years, LGBTQ+ travel was mostly about vacations. Finding welcoming destinations. Attending Pride events. Exploring the world safely.

That's still important.

But something bigger is happening beneath the surface.

People aren't just asking where to visit anymore.

They're asking where to live.

Where to retire.

Where to build a second chapter.

Where to spend the next decade of their lives.

Twenty years ago, many LGBTQ+ people moved because they had to.

They left small towns for larger cities. They relocated to find acceptance, community, opportunity, or simply the freedom to be themselves.

Today, a growing number are moving because they can.

Remote work has untethered millions of people from a physical office.

Retirement is becoming more mobile.

Healthcare costs, housing costs, political uncertainty, and quality-of-life concerns are causing many people to reevaluate where they want to spend their future.

And for the first time in history, LGBTQ+ people have a growing list of countries where building a life abroad isn't just possible—it's practical.

When we created the PrideNomad Index, we evaluated 65 countries based on LGBTQ+ rights, safety, healthcare, social acceptance, visa accessibility, and overall livability.

What surprised me wasn't which countries ranked highest.

It was how many legitimate options now exist.

Spain sits at the top of the list.

Portugal remains one of the strongest combinations of quality of life, affordability, and LGBTQ+ acceptance.

Uruguay has quietly become one of Latin America's most progressive countries.

Thailand continues to attract LGBTQ+ expats looking for affordability, culture, and a welcoming atmosphere.

Costa Rica remains a favorite for those seeking a slower pace of life and access to nature.

None of these places are perfect.

Neither is where you're living now.

That's not the point.

The point is that many of us have more choices than we realize.

Most people never seriously ask themselves a simple question:

"If I could live anywhere in the world, where would I choose?"

Not where your job requires you to be.

Not where your family expects you to be.

Not where you've always been.

Where would you choose?

That's a very different conversation.

And increasingly, it's becoming one of the most important questions LGBTQ+ people can ask.

Because the next chapter of LGBTQ+ freedom may not be about legal equality.

It may be about geographic freedom.

The ability to build your life where you can thrive—not merely survive.

The great LGBTQ+ migration has already begun.

Most people just haven't noticed it yet.

Maybe it's time to start paying attention.

And for many of us, the biggest reason to start paying attention is retirement.

Because if you're rethinking where you want to live... you're also rethinking what retirement actually looks like.

Use Google Maps Backwards Before Booking Any Hotel

Most travelers search for a hotel (or airbnb) first.

Do the opposite.

Open Google Maps and zoom into the neighborhood you’re considering.

Then search:

• LGBTQ bars

• Coffee shops

• Grocery stores

• Pharmacies

• Gyms

• Coworking spaces

If all of those require a 20-minute Uber ride, your trip is already worse than you think.

The hotel matters.

The neighborhood matters more.

I’ve stayed in mediocre hotels in fantastic neighborhoods and had a great trip.

I’ve stayed in great hotels in terrible locations and couldn’t wait to leave.

Book the neighborhood first.

The hotel second.

The Lie We Were Sold About Retirement

What if retirement isn't the finish line at all?

For most of my life, retirement was presented as a finish line.

Work hard.

Save your money.

Retire.

Move somewhere warm.

Play golf.

Take cruises.

Wait for grandchildren to visit.

The end.

The problem?

Most LGBTQ+ people I know have absolutely no interest in that plan.

And honestly, neither do I.

One of the most interesting things we've learned from the PrideNomad community is that nearly 30% of our readers are already retired. Many more are approaching retirement within the next decade.

Yet very few seem excited about traditional retirement.

What they're excited about is possibility.

Travel.

Community.

Purpose.

Adventure.

Connection.

A second act.

Maybe even a third.

I think we've been asking the wrong question.

Most retirement planning focuses on:

"When can I retire?"

But the more important question might be:

"What am I retiring to?"

Because if your entire vision of retirement is simply not working anymore, that's not much of a vision.

You can only play so much golf.

You can only watch so much television.

You can only reorganize the garage so many times.

Eventually, most people need something more.

They need meaning.

One of the advantages LGBTQ+ people often have is that many of us have already reinvented ourselves at least once.

Coming out is a reinvention.

Building a chosen family is a reinvention.

Starting over after a relationship ends is a reinvention.

Moving to a new city is a reinvention.

We've had practice.

Which may be why so many LGBTQ+ retirees aren't looking for a rocking chair.

They're looking for a runway.

Some want to spend months living abroad.

Some want to volunteer.

Some want to mentor younger LGBTQ+ people.

Some want to finally write the book, start the business, learn the language, take the cooking class, or pursue the dream that got postponed while they were building careers and paying bills.

What strikes me is how many people are waiting for permission.

Permission to travel.

Permission to move.

Permission to change.

Permission to start again.

So let me offer a gentle reminder.

You don't need anyone's permission.

If you're fortunate enough to reach retirement (or if you’re serious about creating a location-independent life), you've earned the right to design the next chapter intentionally.

Not according to someone else's script.

According to your own.

Maybe retirement isn't the end of your story.

Maybe it's finally your opportunity to write the chapter you've been wanting to write all along.

And if that's true, the question isn't whether you're ready to retire.

The question is whether you're ready to begin.

I Kissed John Tanzella Once. I'm Glad I Did.

Osaka, 2025. John wore the kimono better than anyone in the room.

Hey, PrideNomad —

That's me in the red shirt.

And that's John Tanzella.

President and CEO of the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association for the past 20 years.

Last year in Osaka, I watched John walk into the IGLTA convention hall in a full kimono.

He had the energy of a man who'd clearly been thinking about that outfit choice for weeks…

And was absolutely delighted with himself.

Every person in the room was smiling before he'd said a single word.

That was John.

But here's what I keep coming back to this week.

When you were with him… you felt like the only person in the room.

Not in some performative, "I'm a great listener" kind of way.

He was emotionally present in a way that's genuinely rare.

He connected with you. He saw you.

Not the business card version of you.

You.

In an industry full of handshakes and networking… that was his superpower.

And he gave it freely. Without keeping score.

I felt it. Everyone who met him felt it.

John passed away this Sunday, after a long illness.

Here's what 20 years of his work actually looks like from the outside:

That hotel that trained its staff to genuinely welcome you — not just tolerate you?

Probably went through IGLTA certification.

That destination that started competing for our community's attention… instead of hoping we'd quietly show up?

John's influence.

That travel professional who finally understood that LGBTQ+ travelers aren't a niche — that we're full human beings who want to feel safe, not just accommodated?

John spent two decades making that the industry standard.

A lot of the opportunities our community enjoys today didn't happen by accident.

They happened because John showed up.

Year after year. Conference after conference. Country after country.

He brought people together. Opened doors. And proved that LGBTQ+ travel wasn't a trend — it was a market, a community, and a cause worth fighting for.

He started at Delta Airlines. Moved to the Human Rights Campaign. Then Destination DC.

Then arrived at IGLTA — and stayed.

Because the work mattered.

Under his leadership, IGLTA became the only LGBTQ+ Affiliate Member of UN Tourism.

A seat at the table where global tourism policy gets written — with our lives on the agenda.

Osaka — And What I Really Thought of the Food

I almost didn't go to Osaka.

I'm glad I did.

But I have some confessions to make.

Confession #1: I am not a Japanese food person.

I tried. I genuinely tried.

There were people around me at every meal practically vibrating with joy — screaming with delight at things placed in front of us — and I was sitting there smiling politely…

Dying a little on the inside.

It just isn't my palate.

One night, I found a burger.

I'm not sorry.

Confession #2: I also had the single best bite of seafood of my entire life in Osaka.

The incredibly welcoming Swissôtel Nankai Osaka (our host hotel) brought out a whole tuna. Full fish.

Carved it in front of us — ceremony, theater, the whole production.

What arrived on my plate wasn't what I'd ever called sashimi before.

The freshest thing I've ever tasted.

I didn't know fish could do that.

That one moment made every politely-endured meal worth it.

And then there was 551 Horai.

If Japanese cuisine isn't your natural comfort zone… 551 Horai (551蓬莱) is your lifeline.

Been feeding Osaka since 1945.

Their butaman — steamed pork and onion buns — and their shumai dumplings are the kind of food that works for everyone. Regardless of palate.

I went for takeout from the Namba Station location.

Then I went back and ate in the restaurant.

Both times: right decision.

Find them in the major train stations, airports, and department store basements all over Osaka.

If there's a queue, join it. The locals know.

On the gay scene:

I was in Osaka for their Pride parade.

Walked with them.

It was — and I say this with full affection — the most charmingly disorganized parade I have ever witnessed.

Nothing like Sydney Mardi Gras. Nothing like New York or Chicago or Wilton Manors.

There was a gathering in a park afterward where I met genuinely fun people…

And the whole thing had this loose, joyful, slightly chaotic energy that I found completely endearing.

But here's the thing.

It was done.

Every LGBTQ+ community moves at its own pace. Every culture has a different history with visibility… a different relationship with openness… a different point of evolution.

The Osaka community isn't West Hollywood.

But there were people there. Marching. In a country where same-sex marriage isn't yet federally recognized.

That says something.

John Tanzella understood this better than anyone — that progress isn't one size or one speed.

And that showing up matters… even when the parade doesn't have a permit.

IGLTA maintains a global directory of certified member businesses — hotels, tour operators, travel advisors, cruise lines — that have made a documented commitment to LGBTQ+ welcoming practices.

Not just hung a flag.

Actually trained their staff. Put their name on record.

Before you book accommodation abroad — especially in a destination you're less certain about — run it through the IGLTA directory.

An IGLTA-certified hotel in a complicated country is a meaningfully different experience than a non-certified one.

5 Ways to Research Real LGBTQ+ Safety Before You Book

Most LGBTQ+ travelers research a destination the same way.

Instagram. A few travel blogs. Maybe a Reddit thread from 2021.

That's not research.

That's vibes.

Here's what actually works — in order of reliability:

1. The IGLTA Member Directory
Hotels, tour operators, and advisors listed here have made a documented commitment to LGBTQ+ welcoming practices. Not performed it. Committed to it.

2. State Department + Equivalent
The U.S. State Department publishes LGBTQ+ travel advisories for every country. So does the UK's FCDO and Canada's travel.gc.ca. Cross-reference all three — different governments flag different risks.

3. ILGA World's Annual Legal Map
The most comprehensive map of LGBTQ+ legal status on the planet. Updated every year. Criminalization, equal marriage, trans protections — every country, current year.

4. The Facebook Group Test
Search "[city name] LGBTQ expats" before any trip. An active group with recent posts tells you two things: the community exists… and people feel safe enough to organize publicly. The pinned posts will surface safety intel no travel blog publishes.

5. Recent News — Not Travel Content
Search "[destination] + LGBTQ" filtered to the past 12 months. In news — not blogs. Crackdowns and legal changes rarely appear on travel sites until they've been trending for weeks. News tells you what's actually happening now.

These five steps take 20 minutes.

They'll tell you more than every "LGBTQ+-friendly" badge on every booking site combined.

The Secret Greece Understands That Most Of The World Has Forgotten

I've been thinking about Greece again.

Not because of the Instagram shots.

Not because it's trending.

But because every time I talk to someone who's spent real time there, they say the same thing:

"It changed something in me."

When most people think about Greece, they think about the scenery.

The white buildings of Santorini.

The blue-domed churches.

The ancient ruins.

The islands.

The food.

And all of that is wonderful.

But I don't think that's the real reason so many people fall in love with Greece.

I think Greece understands something that much of the modern world has forgotten.

It understands leisure.

Not vacation.

Leisure.

Those aren't the same thing.

Vacation is what happens when exhausted people temporarily escape lives that have become too busy.

You take a week off.

You try to relax.

You fail.

Because you can't stop checking email, planning the next thing, optimizing the experience.

Leisure is different.

Leisure is the belief that life itself should contain space.

Not as a reward.

As a baseline.

Time to sit.

Time to wander.

Time to talk.

Time to enjoy a meal without simultaneously answering emails, scrolling Instagram, and planning tomorrow's schedule.

One of the things that fascinates me about Greece is that many parts of the country still operate on a rhythm that feels strangely rebellious in 2026.

Especially if you're coming from North America.

In much of the United States, efficiency has become a religion.

Everything is optimized.

Everything is accelerated.

Everything is measured.

We're constantly trying to arrive somewhere.

Greece often feels like a country asking a different question:

"What if there isn't anywhere urgent to arrive?"

What if the point isn't optimization?

What if the point is just... this?

Budget Reality: Outside Santorini and Mykonos, Greece remains surprisingly affordable compared with much of Western Europe.

Spend time in a Greek café and you'll notice something unusual.

People linger.

A coffee isn't a transaction.

It's an activity.

A meal isn't something to be completed.

It's an experience.

Conversation isn't squeezed into the gaps between obligations.

Conversation is often the obligation.

And perhaps nowhere is this more obvious than on the islands.

Most visitors race toward the famous names.

Santorini.

Mykonos.

Crete.

But many longtime Greece lovers will tell you the magic often lives elsewhere.

On the quieter islands.

The less photographed islands.

The places where you stop trying to see everything and start paying attention to what's already around you.

A fisherman repairing nets.

A grandmother watering flowers.

An old man debating politics for three hours beneath a tree with his friends.

Nothing is happening.

And yet somehow everything is happening.

That's the thing most of us have forgotten how to see.

This may be one reason Greece continues attracting people who are rethinking what freedom means.

Retirees.

Remote workers.

Entrepreneurs.

People who have achieved many of the things they once wanted and are now asking a deeper question:

"Is this how I actually want to spend my days?"

The answer isn't always Greece.

But Greece forces the question.

And that's valuable.

For LGBTQ+ travelers, Greece isn't as progressive as Spain or the Netherlands.

But that's not really the point.

The point is that Greece offers something harder to find:

The feeling that you can finally stop performing.

Stop optimizing.

Stop being "on."

And just... exist.

For a lot of us, that's rarer than a gay bar.

Athens has become increasingly vibrant. Younger generations continue pushing the culture forward. And several islands have developed welcoming reputations among LGBTQ+ travelers.

The trajectory matters.

But honestly, the thing pulling me toward Greece isn't politics.

It isn't beaches.

It isn't ancient history.

It's the reminder.

The reminder that life is not supposed to feel like an endless race between obligations.

That maybe success isn't measured by how many things you can cram into a calendar.

That maybe the richest people aren't the ones with the most money.

Maybe they're the ones who have mastered the art of an unhurried afternoon.

And in a world that keeps moving faster every year, that might be one of the most radical ideas of all.

Ask For What Isn’t On The Buffet

One of my favorite lessons from this cruise was surprisingly simple:

Ask.

Every morning, I’d make a protein shake using my Ninja Blast Max. I’d grab spinach, berries, and almond milk—even when they weren’t sitting out on the buffet.

How?

I asked.

Most travelers assume that if they don’t see something, it isn’t available.

That’s often wrong.

Whether it’s fresh fruit, a healthier option, almond milk, or a special request, cruise lines are usually far more accommodating than people realize.

The lesson?

Don’t confuse what’s visible with what’s available.

Sometimes the best travel hack is simply asking the question.

The Thing That Surprised Me Most About My Cruise Had Nothing To Do With The Caribbean

I just finished my fourth business mastermind cruise.

And for the first time, I finally understood what I've been experiencing.

The first time, I thought it was just a fun experiment.

The second time, I noticed the pattern.

The third time, I started to understand the power of it.

The fourth time, one of my cruise mates—someone who runs group trips for a living—pulled me aside and said:

"You know, you should be doing this with your own community."

I hadn't thought about it that way.

But now I can't stop thinking about it.

Here's what happens on these trips:

Every morning (when we’re at sea), we gather for learning sessions. We share what we're working on. We solve problems together. We write code, build landing pages, test marketing campaigns.

When at port, we explore whatever port we've docked at. Some go solo. Others form their own group adventures.

And in the evenings, we reconvene over dinner and keep the conversations going.

Some people party late into the night. I'm usually in bed by 10pm.

Not because I'm boring.

But because I've spent the day building, learning, connecting, and exploring.

By day seven of each cruise, complete strangers are launching projects together.

That's not a vacation.

That's something else entirely.

Modern life has become remarkably efficient at eliminating the conditions that create both community AND collaboration.

We work remotely. Order groceries through apps. Text instead of calling. Stream instead of gathering.

We're more connected than ever. And somehow lonelier than ever.

A cruise ship—especially one designed for collaboration—accidentally solves both problems.

Because it creates the conditions for repeated, meaningful encounters.

You see someone at breakfast. Again at the morning session. Again at lunch. Again exploring the port. Again at dinner. Again on the deck at sunset.

By the third day, you're not strangers anymore.

You're collaborators. Thinking partners. Friends.

When you combine repeated exposure with shared purpose, something powerful happens.

You don't just make friends.

You build things together.

The result isn't just a vacation.

It's a temporary village of makers, thinkers, and creators.

And after four of these experiences, I can tell you:

This is what many of us are really searching for.

Not another destination. Not another passport stamp. Not another bucket-list attraction.

Community. Collaboration. Connection.

A chance to be around people who are curious, open, ambitious, and interested in actually doing something with their lives.

Over the years, quite a few readers have asked whether PrideNomad should organize a group trip.

I've always resisted the idea.

But after my fourth cruise, when my friend said: "You've already built the community. You just need to bring them together"—something clicked.

In fact, I've already booked my fifth trip with this group for December.

Because I keep coming back.

Because it works.

So here's what I'm thinking.

I'm already doing my fifth mastermind cruise in December.

But what if PrideNomad organized its own small-group cruise—maybe 20-30 people—for 2027?

Where we didn't just travel together, but actually created something together?

Not a party boat. Not a floating vacation.

But a genuine working retreat for smart, curious, ambitious LGBTQ+ travelers who want to exchange ideas, build projects, learn from each other, explore the world—and do it all surrounded by people who actually get it.

Morning sessions where we work on our businesses, our writing, our creative projects.

Afternoons in port exploring new places.

Evenings connecting over dinner, drinks, or—let's be honest—collapsing into bed by 10pm because we actually did something that day.

Not forced networking. Not rah-rah motivational speeches.

Just smart people doing interesting work in beautiful places.

You hear Dutch, Papiamento, Spanish, and English floating through the streets of Willemstad. The architecture looks like Amsterdam collided with the tropics. The cafés spill out onto colorful sidewalks. And the overall energy feels more "live and let live" than performative or macho.

Pride Month is coming.

And I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.

Not because of the politics.

Suddenly less interested.

Part of me feels relieved.

Which is a weird thing to admit out loud.

Visibility matters. Funding matters. Representation matters.

But somewhere along the way...

Parts of Pride started feeling less like a movement and more like a marketing campaign with better lighting.

Less about us.

And maybe that's why this year feels strange.

Because we're being forced to remember what Pride actually was before the banks showed up.

Pride used to be scrappy.

Messy community energy. Volunteers carrying water bottles down overheated streets. Local drag queens holding entire events together with duct tape and charisma. Awkward first-timers nervously showing up alone. Older couples quietly holding hands in public after decades of not being able to.

That's the real heartbeat of Pride.

And maybe this year gives us a chance to rediscover some of it.

Smaller events may actually feel more personal. More local. More connected to the communities they serve instead of trying to become giant branded spectacles that look good in a press release.

Maybe Pride becomes less about corporate approval and more about human belonging again.

Because at its core, Pride was never really about sponsorships.

It was about people deciding they deserved joy, visibility, safety, love, and community in a world that didn't always make room for them.

That still matters.

Maybe now more than ever.

And if this year's Pride feels a little smaller, a little scrappier, and a little more ours again...

Maybe that's not entirely a bad thing.

I Didn't Expect This from a Film Festival. I Was Wrong.

I thought I was just going to a film festival.

A few good films. A nice night out. Some community.

What I didn't expect… was to be completely pulled in.

Over the past few days, I've seen more of the lineup—and I haven't stopped thinking about it.

The quality of the films? Genuinely impressive.

But more than that—the stories.

They weren't just entertaining.
They were transformative.

The kind of films that don't just pass the time… they stay with you.

One of the standouts for me was "Free at Heart."

It follows a 16-year-old German boy whose life gets turned upside down when he discovers his father has another son—and that son suddenly becomes part of their lives.

What unfolds is layered, emotional, and beautifully done. There are twists you don't expect, moments that hit quietly, and others that land all at once.

And then afterward—we met the filmmaker.

A young writer/director who not only told the story… but carried it with such clarity and confidence that you couldn't help but be impressed.

Sitting there, talking to him afterward, I realized—this is what it looks like when someone refuses to let our stories be small.

That's part of what makes festivals like this different.

You're not just watching content.
You're connecting with the people who created it.

Then came the closing film: "We'll Find Happiness."

And this one… stayed with me.

It tells the story of people risking everything—crossing borders, sacrificing safety, sometimes even their lives—in search of freedom.

Not metaphorical freedom.
Real freedom. Safety. The right to exist.

After the film, one of the actors stood up to speak. The mayor of Fort Lauderdale was in the room. And for a moment, it wasn't just a screening—it was a recognition. A reminder that these stories matter. That we matter.

I'll be honest—I got emotional.
I'm still feeling it now.

Because I know what it's like to wonder if the place you're in will ever feel safe. And watching people on screen fight for that same thing—knowing some of them are still fighting it in real life—it breaks you open.

And maybe part of why it hit so hard is because in places like Florida right now, spaces like this don't feel guaranteed.

This isn't just about film.
It's about us.

Our stories. Our struggles. Our resilience. Our joy.

And the simple, powerful act of gathering together to witness it.

What surprised me most about OUTshine wasn't just the programming.

It was the feeling.

I didn't plan this.

I came to Miami to spend time with PrideNomad mom—she's turning 92 in a couple weeks.

But while I was here, the Florida AIDS Walk happened to be taking place.

So I went.

But that's not the point.

The point is what happened during the walk itself.

Because that's when I met a couple from St. Petersburg, John and Reagan.

We were all walking for the Equality Florida team.

Married for over a decade. Sharp. Warm. Instantly likable.

We walked most of the 5K together.

And somewhere between mile markers, we were swapping stories… and, because we're gay, of course, recipes.

After the walk, Queen Latifah hit the stage and gave us an unforgettable performance.

I lost them in the crowd after that (so if you guys are reading this, reply back!).

But here's the thing:

Travel gets a lot more interesting the moment you stop being a visitor and start participating.

Not as a tourist.

As a participant.

That doesn't happen when you're just "seeing the sights."

It happens when you step into the life of a place.

And here's what most people miss:

There is always something going on.

A Pride kickball league.
A drag brunch fundraiser.
A queer book club.
A community potluck.

You just have to look.

Google it.
Check local LGBTQ+ groups.
Ask a chamber.
Ask a bartender.

Canada is one of the most inclusive countries in the world.

Which means most people end up paying privately to bridge the gap—and that’s not cheap.

So yes—Canada works.

But your child may need support now…

On paper, the Netherlands looks ideal:

You can be fully covered… and still stuck waiting.

In the Netherlands, the problem isn’t coverage.

Spain: You Can Move Fast—If You Build Your Own System

Spain works differently.

Private diagnosis can happen in weeks, not years.

Private therapy is significantly more affordable than North America.

And daily life tends to feel more family-centered and human.

But:

Services vary by region.
Language matters—especially in places like Catalonia.
Public systems can be inconsistent.

So Spain can work very well.

But only if you’re willing to actively manage your own system inside it.

You’ll move faster—but only if you take control of the process yourself.

The Nordics: Strong Systems—Under Pressure

Denmark. Sweden. Finland.

These countries are often seen as the gold standard.

And structurally, they are strong.

But:

Wait times still exist.
Schools can be overstretched.
Support varies by city—and even by municipality.
Rural areas can mean limited access.

The system assumes consistency.

But your child may need flexibility.

What a Functional Move Actually Looks Like

This is what people rarely say out loud:

You don’t move into a working system

After years of scanning rooms and calculating safety, of course we cluster.
Of course we want density.
Of course we want to exhale.

But once you’ve exhaled… you can think strategically again.

If you’re paying 20% more per year because of postcode…

And you earn real money…

That delta compounds.

Over three years, that’s tens of thousands.

Sometimes six figures.

That’s:

Last week I called out that seductive €15,500 Italy visa ad.

The one promising to "completely change your life."

And a bunch of you replied asking the REAL question:

"Okay Ken... so who SHOULD actually do this?"

Fair.

Let me break it down.

When This Visa Is Actually Perfect

If you're a retiree with a solid pension...

One that comfortably clears the €30-32K threshold...

And you're ready for a slower, culture-rich second act?

Italy can be extraordinary.

Walkable cities. Deep history. Healthcare that doesn't bankrupt you.

This visa was literally designed with YOU in mind.

Same goes if you're living off dividends or rental income.

If your money shows up whether you work or not... this structure works beautifully.

Or maybe you're a few years out from retirement...

And you're INTENTIONALLY building passive income now...

So you can pull the trigger later.

That's smart planning.

But notice what ALL these scenarios have in common?

Your income is TRULY passive.

When This Visa Is Absolutely NOT For You

If you're a freelancer... a remote worker... a consultant...

Someone whose income depends on ACTIVE work...

This visa is not built for you.

Under the Residenza Elettiva, you cannot work in Italy.

Period.

There ARE other European pathways for digital workers.

This just isn't one of them.

And if your strategy is:

"I'll move first and figure out the income part later..."

Pause.

Immigration systems reward PREPARATION.

Is it dangerous? Also no.

It's somewhere in the middle... which for a lot of gay men over 40?

Is actually plenty.

Just go in with eyes open.

So Here's My Take

PrideNomad isn't about chasing pretty scenery.

It's about designing a life that actually HOLDS UP in reality.

Not just in Instagram posts.

Italy might be part of your story.

But only if the pieces actually fit.

🚆 The European Train Seat Hack

When booking European trains (Italy, France, Germany, Spain, etc.):

Most people pick seats based on window vs aisle.

Wrong question.

The better question:

Which direction is the train traveling?

On scenic routes — especially:

• Switzerland

• Northern Italy

• Coastal France

• Austrian Alps

One side of the train has the view.

The other side has… a wall.

Before you book:

1. Check the route on Google Maps

2. See which direction the train is heading

3. Pick the side that faces mountains, lakes, or coast

Example:

Milan → Venice?
Sit on the left for better Alpine views.

Zurich → Interlaken?
Right side gets the lakes

It takes 30 seconds.

It upgrades your entire ride.

And yes — sometimes the difference is dramatic.

In others? New laws are tightening.

Often comes down to what you knew before you boarded the plane.

Where Progress Is Actually Happening

Thailand and Liechtenstein recently embraced marriage equality.

Lithuania celebrated its first same-sex civil partnership.

Chile's advancing anti-bullying protections that include sexual orientation and gender identity.

And in Australia's state of Victoria, lawmakers are moving toward stronger protections for intersex minors.

These aren't just symbolic wins.

They signal growing cultural acceptance... especially in urban centers and tourism hubs.

For travelers, that usually means clearer legal footing and more visible queer community spaces.

Which is exactly what we want.

Where Things Are Getting Trickier

At the same time, some governments are heading in the opposite direction.

Ghana's proposed "Family Values" bill could strengthen anti-LGBTQ+ laws.

Indonesia now criminalizes sex outside of marriage. YES—That’s where Bali is located (just sayin’)

(Which, without marriage equality, places same-sex couples in a vulnerable legal position.)

Kazakhstan has implemented restrictions on LGBTQ+ "propaganda."

And courts in both Europe and the United States are reviewing cases that could influence future protections.

Does this automatically mean "don't go?"

No.

But it DOES mean:

Know local laws before you land.

Understand the difference between tourist areas and rural regions.

Stay aware of how public affection may be interpreted.

Information is freedom.

The Truth Seasoned Queer Travelers Know

Legal reality and lived experience don't always match.

Some countries with restrictive laws still have vibrant queer communities in major cities.

And some countries with FULL equality still have pockets of hostility.

That's why nuance matters more than headlines.

Before you book:

Check current travel advisories.

Connect with local LGBTQ+ groups online.

Read RECENT traveler experiences... not just the ones from 2019.

Because the world changes fast.

Here's the Bigger Picture

Progress and backlash often rise together.

History rarely moves in straight lines.

But globally? Visibility continues expanding.

More countries recognize relationships than ever before.

More young people are openly identifying across the spectrum.

More travelers are prioritizing inclusive destinations.

Living your best queer life doesn't mean ignoring risk.

It means making informed choices.

This showed up in my feed recently:

"€15,500 IS ALL YOU NEED TO COMPLETELY CHANGE YOUR LIFE."

Big font. Romantic backdrop. Italy implied.

Seductive as hell.

And technically... it's referencing legal support fees for Italy's Residenza Elettiva visa.

But that headline's doing a LOT of emotional heavy lifting.

Because €15,500 is NOT:

• Your annual income requirement
• Your cost of living
• Your tax exposure
• Or your total relocation cost

It's their consulting fee.

And that distinction? Kind of matters.

Here's What They're Not Telling You

Italy's Residenza Elettiva visa is REAL.

It's designed for non-EU citizens with stable passive income who want to live there long term.

Passive means pensions, dividends, rental income, investment income.

It does NOT mean freelancing.

It does NOT mean running your remote business.

Under this visa, you cannot work in Italy.

You'll usually see an income figure around €30–32K per year for the main applicant.

But here's the fine print:

Consulates interpret requirements differently.

Dependents increase the financial threshold.

Documentation standards can be STRICT.

And that number says nothing about your actual lifestyle expenses.

Italy CAN be affordable.

It can also quietly run €3–5K per month... depending on where and how you live.

Is This a Scam?

No.

For the RIGHT person, this visa can be a beautiful second act.

Retirees with solid pensions? Perfect.
Investors living off dividends? Great fit.
People exiting corporate life with TRUE passive income? Absolutely.

But if your income depends on ACTIVE work...

This probably isn't your lane.

They book a week because it’s cheaper per night…
then realize the place looks nothing like the photos.

Meanwhile... Da Nang is just sitting there.

→ Walkable coastline. No dodging tuk-tuks every 30 seconds.

If you NEED visible gay infrastructure and a loud queer scene... keep scrolling.

Who Should Pack Their Bags

✔ Gay men 40+ who want beach living without Ibiza energy
✔ Retirees stretching dollars further
✔ Remote workers earning Western salaries
✔ People who value stability over nightlife

How Not To Mess This Up

Da Nang's in BALANCE right now.

Locals, tourists, and long-stay foreigners sharing the same space.

That never lasts.

So if you're moving there... do it thoughtfully.

Don't overpay just because you can. (You reset the market when you do.)

Sign 6-12 month leases instead of Airbnb hopping.

Support Vietnamese-owned spots. Not just expat bubbles.

Learn basic Vietnamese. Even a LITTLE changes everything.

Bottom Line

Da Nang still makes financial AND lifestyle sense.

But the clock's ticking.

In 2-3 years, this email's gonna sound quaint.

And you'll be kicking yourself for not moving when it was still underpriced.
