💶 Spain's Digital Nomad Visa: the math just got harder

Spain raised its minimum wage via Royal Decree 126/2026, and the Digital Nomad Visa income threshold moved with it: €2,850/month for a single applicant (family add-ons: +€916 for the first dependent, +€305 each after).

Spain also created a specialist fraud unit after uncovering fake employment contracts and shell-company applications. Expect much closer document scrutiny.

One door closed entirely: you can no longer convert from Spain's Non-Lucrative Visa to the Digital Nomad Visa from inside the country.

What this means for us: Spain is still one of the most couple-friendly visa systems in Europe (it recognizes unmarried partners), but "just apply" got measurably harder this year. If Spain's on your list, budget for the higher number and expect real document scrutiny, not a rubber stamp.

🔪 A Singapore teen planned knife attacks on LGBTQ+ classmates. People around him spoke up.

Singapore's Internal Security Department detained three teenagers, ages 14, 15, and 19, in separate, unrelated extremism cases between April and June. One of them, a 19-year-old student, allegedly planned knife attacks against military personnel and LGBTQ+ students at his school. Authorities said his acquaintances reported his escalating behavior before he could act.

What this means for us: This is a different shape of story than Berlin: the attack didn't happen, because people close enough to notice the warning signs spoke up. Radicalization aimed at our community isn't confined to one ideology or one region. Neither is the willingness to intervene.

🏳️‍⚧️ 150,000 people just made trans history in London

London Trans+ Pride drew a record 150,000 people on July 25, up from 100,000 last year, making it the largest Trans+ Pride event in the world. For the first time, the march ended with speeches in Trafalgar Square. This year's theme: "Our Future, Our Fight."

What this means for us: 150,000 people showing up isn't evidence that the fight is over. It's evidence that people know it isn't.

🌘 Plan a trip around this: a spectacular 95% solar eclipse over the French Riviera

On the evening of August 12, 2026, roughly 95% of the sun will disappear behind the moon as seen from Monaco and the French Riviera, one of the deepest partial eclipses visible from the region in decades, setting low over the Mediterranean. Best viewing spots: Monaco's waterfront, Nice's Colline du Château, Cap d'Antibes, and the beaches of Cannes. (h/t Jameson Farn, Gay French Riviera.)

What this means for us: If you're anywhere near southern France or Monaco on August 12, this is a genuinely rare, plan-your-evening-around-it event, not just a nice-to-see. Certified eclipse glasses only. Don't look directly at a 95%-covered sun without them.

🇵🇹 The Portugal requirement almost nobody sees coming

Most LGBTQ+ couples assume one approved visa automatically covers both partners. It doesn't. There's an additional income requirement for a dependent partner, and unmarried partners must document that their relationship meets Portugal's recognition requirements.

We made a full breakdown of exactly what documenting the relationship requires, and what the income math actually looks like for a couple. It's real, it's specific, and it's the kind of thing you want to know before you've already committed to a lease.

Berlin Wasn't an Aberration. That's What We Need to Talk About.

Before anything else:

A woman is dead.

Twenty-nine more people are injured.

Someone drove a van into a crowd celebrating Christopher Street Day in Berlin's Tiergarten on Saturday evening.

We're heartbroken for Berlin. And for everyone who was there.

Here's what we know.

The suspect, a 21-year-old German citizen with Lebanese roots named Abdul Ballout, fled on foot and allegedly attacked more people with a knife. A manhunt caught up with him in Spandau about 20 hours later. He ran at officers with a weapon and was shot dead.

Prosecutors say he'd previously tried to join ISIS. German authorities are treating it as Islamist terrorism. The Pride event itself, which had drawn hundreds of thousands of people, was called off shortly after the attack.

It would be comforting to file Berlin under "one extremist, one terrible night" and move on.

We can't.

Because this wasn't an aberration. It's part of a pattern.

Germany still has some of Europe's strongest LGBTQ+ laws. Marriage equality, anti-discrimination protections, all of it: unchanged by Saturday.

But good laws and a worsening social climate can exist at the same time. And increasingly, they do.

Here's the data. Germany ranks #7 out of 49 countries on ILGA-Europe's 2026 Rainbow Map, scoring 70 out of 100, up a spot from last year. Marriage equality has been law since October 1, 2017.

Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office and Interior Ministry recorded 1,765 criminal offenses targeting sexual orientation in 2024: roughly 18% more than the year before. ILGA-Europe's 2026 Annual Review describes something larger across the region: hate crimes at record levels, Pride restrictions, and anti-LGBTI hate speech normalized by political and religious leaders.

The threats aren't coming from one direction. Far-right extremism and Islamist extremism are very different ideologies. Both have targeted LGBTQ+ people in Germany.

That's the distinction we actually need: legal safety and lived safety are two different things, and a country can score well on one while the other gets worse.

A country can protect your marriage, ban discrimination, and score beautifully on a rights index, while holding your partner's hand on a train platform or gathering publicly at Pride gets less comfortable, or more dangerous.

That's why Saturday doesn't suddenly make Berlin an unsafe city, or Germany a country to avoid. Every major Pride event we're aware of this summer, Amsterdam, Madrid, Barcelona, Stockholm, already runs with visible, heavy security.

But neither should we wave a Rainbow Map around and pretend nothing meaningful has changed. Something has. The temperature matters.

For PrideNomads, the lesson isn't "don't go." It's know where you're going: look at the laws, look at reported hate crime, look at the political climate, and pay attention to local security guidance before a major LGBTQ+ gathering.

Berlin remains Berlin: queer, defiant, culturally extraordinary, and legally one of the stronger places in Europe to be LGBTQ+. But rights won on paper don't permanently settle the question of whether we're welcome in the world outside. We have to watch both.

NOMAD HACK:

The 23-Hour Flight Recheck

Before we get to Edinburgh: here's one practical thing you can do right now to save money on your next flight.

If you book directly with an airline for a flight to, from, or within the United States at least 7 days before departure, U.S. Department of Transportation rules require the airline to give you either a 24-hour penalty-free cancellation window or a 24-hour hold at the quoted fare.

Most people treat that as an "oh crap, wrong dates" safety net. Use it as a price weapon instead.

The hack: book the fare when you're comfortable with it. Set an alarm for 23 hours later. When it goes off, search the exact itinerary again.

Fare dropped enough to matter? Cancel the original for a full refund, book the cheaper one. Didn't drop? Do nothing. You already have the seat you wanted.

One wrinkle: this rule applies to airlines, not third-party sellers like Expedia or Booking.com. Book directly with the airline for this one to work.

Bonus move: keep tracking the fare after those 24 hours. Google Flights lets you track a specific itinerary and alerts you on price changes; depending on the airline's fare rules, a later drop can sometimes still be repriced for travel credit.

The mistake most travelers make is treating "buy" as the end of the search. For the first 24 hours, it shouldn't be.

Meet Us at the Fringe (August 6–14)

We'll be in Edinburgh August 6–14 for the Fringe.

We've covered the Fringe every year we've run this newsletter. This year's no different.

One night a few years back, we caught Reuben Kaye's show at the Kaye Hole. He stands at the door and personally greets every single person walking in. Says "welcome home." Gives them a hug. By the time the show starts, the room already feels like it's yours.

That's the whole spirit of the Fringe: 3,000-plus shows competing for your attention, and the ones that stick are the ones that make you feel like you belong there. We once saw 37 performances in 6 days trying to catch as much of it as we could.

A few practical notes if you're coming. Book accommodations early: the best deals, including student housing a short walk from most venues, go fast. Become a "Friend of the Fringe" for 2-for-1 tickets on a long list of shows.

Could You Actually Live in Edinburgh?

We've been going to the Fringe for years without ever asking the obvious PrideNomad question: could you actually build a life here, not just visit for a festival?

Here's the honest read.

The legal picture: the United Kingdom currently sits at #22 out of 49 on ILGA-Europe's 2026 Rainbow Map, scoring 44%, down 2 points from last year. A real, measured decline, not a headline exaggeration.

Scotland itself has had marriage equality since December 16, 2014, about 8 months after England and Wales. The devolved Scottish government has generally pushed further than Westminster on LGBTQ+ policy. But UK-wide protections apply everywhere, so the national trajectory is what to watch, not Edinburgh's local reputation as a liberal city.

The UK has no digital nomad visa. Visitors can now do some remote work connected to overseas employment while they're there, but working remotely can't be the primary purpose of the visit. The standard visitor route allows stays up to 6 months, but that doesn't turn it into a 6-month work-from-Edinburgh visa: UK guidance says longer stays involving substantial remote work can trigger extra scrutiny.

Translation: answering emails during a couple weeks at the Fringe is fine. Moving to Edinburgh for 6 months and supporting yourself entirely by working remotely is a much harder case to make under visitor status.

Aged 18–30, or up to 35 for Australians, Canadians, New Zealanders, and South Koreans, and from an eligible country? The Youth Mobility Scheme is the strongest longer-stay option: permission to live and work in the UK for up to 2 years.

Cost of living: Edinburgh isn't cheap. Recent citywide data puts the average one-bedroom above £1,000/month, while current city-centre listings commonly run £1,400–£1,700 or more. Shared flats and neighborhoods outside the center can bring that down substantially, but Edinburgh's cost of living is closer to a mid-tier European capital than a small UK city. London is still worse.

DECISION BRIEF: Edinburgh works best as a long-visit city, not a relocation base, unless you land the Youth Mobility Scheme visa or direct UK employer sponsorship. The visitor-visa remote-work allowance is real, but the 6-month clock and the "no UK clients" rule make it a place to spend a season, not build a life, for most of our readers. That doesn't make it less worth going. It makes it worth going in with eyes open about which category you actually fall into.

🛂 Global reshuffle — read the fine print before you celebrate it

Henley Passport Index just released its 20th Anniversary Edition. Singapore holds #1 (192 visa-free destinations). The UAE is the biggest riser in the Index's 20-year history, from 62nd place in 2006 to joint 2nd today, +153 destinations. The US, ranked #1 back in 2006 alongside Denmark and Finland, has fallen to joint 10th, tied with Iceland.

What this means for us: Passport power has nothing to do with whether we're safe there. The UAE's rise is a travel-document story, not an invitation. Private same-sex relations are criminalized there: up to 10 years imprisonment under a 2026 penal code update, with public displays of a same-sex relationship (affection, dress, advocacy) carrying up to 5 years on top of that. No known prosecutions of foreigners since at least 2015, but "no known prosecutions" is not the same as "safe," and it's not a place we'd ever frame as a destination.

🏡 New nomad door — with real strings attached

Bulgaria officially launched its digital nomad visa December 20, 2025, and joined the eurozone January 1, 2026, its 21st member, on top of 2025 Schengen entry. Income floor: roughly €31,000/year, pegged to 50x Bulgaria's minimum wage. No local employment allowed: foreign clients or employer only.

What this means for us: Being gay isn't illegal in Bulgaria, and discrimination's been formally banned since 2004.

But… Bulgaria was the first country in Europe to constitutionally ban same-sex marriage (1991), still bans it today, and doesn't recognize same-sex partnerships at all. A 2024 law bans "promotion of non-traditional sexual orientation" in schools, and trans people can't legally change their gender marker since a 2023 court ruling. This is a visa worth knowing about, not a destination we'd call welcoming: good for someone who wants EU/Schengen access and can live discreetly, a real downgrade if community and legal recognition matter to you.

🌏 Where the new Korea visa is actually landing — legal picture, unfiltered

South Korea's F-1-D "workation visa" launched with a real income break for under-35s living outside Seoul. This week, that's showing up in Yeosu, a coastal city in the southwest with dedicated co-working infrastructure already running and a KTX ride of about 3.5-4 hours from Seoul.

What this means for us: South Korea doesn't recognize same-sex marriage or civil unions, has no national anti-discrimination law, and still criminalizes same-sex conduct specifically within the military. Civilian life is legal, and courts have started chipping away at the gap: a 2024 Supreme Court ruling secured same-sex partners spousal health-insurance coverage, a real first. Seoul has a visible, real scene. Yeosu, being smaller and more rural, almost certainly doesn't — this visa break is genuinely attractive on paper, but going in with Seoul's community assumptions and applying them to Yeosu would be a mistake.

🏡 On the market — two continents, same story

Two LGBTQ institutions, oceans apart, announced that they will be changing hands. In France: a gay-friendly B&B in Peymeinade, a short drive from Cannes, went up for sale July 20 after 40+ years in hospitality under the same owner, who's semi-retiring. (h/t Jameson Farn, Gay French Riviera.) In Australia: Turtle Cove Beach Resort in Wangetti, Queensland, Australia's only adults-only LGBTQIA+ beachfront resort, welcoming guests since 1993, went up for sale after 17 years under owners Jacinta and Kelvin Banks. Both properties were offered first to their own communities before hitting the broader market.

Worth naming plainly, after three items this issue with real legal caveats: Australia has full marriage equality (since 2017) and strong nationwide anti-discrimination protections. Not every door opening this week comes with an asterisk.

🔥 Fifteen years running

Fetish Week London just hit its 15th edition — eight full days, same home base (Electrowerkz) it's used for over a decade. A decade-plus of one venue anchoring one of Europe's largest recurring queer gatherings says something real about a scene's staying power: London's kink and fetish scene isn't a pop-up trend, it's built-in infrastructure you can actually plan a trip around, year after year.

Latitude's View

A visa opening and a passport climbing the rankings are not the same thing as a place being safe for us. Bulgaria and South Korea both made real, usable moves this week, and both still fall short of full legal recognition, one way or another. The UAE's passport surge is the clearest version of that gap: genuinely more powerful travel document, genuinely criminalized to be visibly gay there. Read every "door opened" item this week against that question first: what does it actually look like to be us, there — not just what the paperwork says.

Then there's Australia — no asterisk needed. Turtle Cove's owners get to sell a 30-year LGBTQIA+ institution on their own terms, to their own community first, in a country that's had full marriage equality for almost a decade. That's what it looks like when the paperwork and the reality actually match.

That's the difference this week actually turned on — not what changed, but what it costs to be visibly us when it does.

Your Mental Map Might Be a Decade Out of Date

One of the most dangerous things about relocating isn't picking the wrong country. It's making today's decision using yesterday's map.

I know, because I did exactly that.

I lived in Bangkok for ten years. 2009 to 2019. Left before something happened that would have changed how I thought about the place I called home: on January 23, 2025, Thailand's Marriage Equality Act took effect, making it the first country in Southeast Asia — and only the third in all of Asia, after Taiwan and Nepal — to legally recognize same-sex marriage. The law didn't just add a new category. It rewrote the civil code itself, replacing "man and woman" with "persons" and "husband and wife" with "spouses," which means the rights that come with it — inheritance, adoption, medical decision-making for a partner — apply the same way they would to any other married couple.

I lived there for a decade without that law existing. If I'd stayed, I'd have watched my adopted home change under me in a way I never expected it to. If I were making the Thailand decision today instead of in 2009, I'd be weighing a genuinely different country than the one I moved to.

Two things changed in Thailand recently.

First: marriage equality. Same-sex couples now have the same legal rights as any other married couple: inheritance, adoption, medical decisions, all of it.

Second: the five-year Destination Thailand Visa (DTV). Stays up to 180 days per entry, extendable another 180 days, for about $280. No employer sponsorship required.

Different changes.

Different reasons.

Both matter.

The cost of living still works. A single person living comfortably in Bangkok — decent one-bedroom condo, food, transport, some leisure — runs roughly 40,000 to 55,000 THB a month, about $1,150 to $1,570. Rent alone for a one-bedroom in a good area is 15,000 to 25,000 THB (~$430–$710).

In our 2025 PrideNomad Index — you can see all 65 countries at pridenomad.com/index — Thailand ranked #10 out of 65 with a composite score of 7.84, higher than many destinations people instinctively assume would outrank it. Marriage equality almost certainly strengthens Thailand's position, but our 2026 rescoring isn't finished yet. I'm not going to hand you numbers I haven't verified.

DECISION BRIEF

My practical reading, not an Index score.

Thailand's strongest case right now is for remote workers and flexible long-stay residents, where the DTV genuinely opens a door that wasn't there before. Retirees need a separate calculation involving long-term visa eligibility, healthcare access, taxation, and estate planning. A single composite score can't responsibly answer both questions, so I'm not pretending it can.

Here's what I've noticed since I left: I still catch myself thinking about Thailand the way I thought about it the year I moved away, not the year it actually is now: married, legally, the same as anyone.

Thailand isn't the only thing that's changed. The latest Riskline map is a reminder that some countries are moving in the opposite direction: 91 countries now classified high-risk for LGBTQ+ travelers, real rollbacks in Niger, Burkina Faso and Senegal, including Niger's new criminalization law this summer. A country changing for the better doesn't cancel out a different country changing for the worse. Both belong on the same map, no softening.

So here's the actual question underneath a scary-sounding headline like "91 countries, high risk": which half of your mental map hasn't been checked lately — the half that got worse, or the half that quietly got better?

Don't start by comparing countries. You'll drown. Start by eliminating them.

Open your favorite AI assistant right now and paste this, filled in with your real numbers:

"I'm [age]. [Relationship status]. My monthly income is [$X]. Eliminate every country I should NOT consider relocating to first, based on cost of living, visa access, and LGBTQ legal protections. For every elimination, give me the specific rule or threshold and the official source I should verify."

That's it. You're not asking it to pick your destination. You're asking it to do the boring 90%: the countries that were never realistic for your actual numbers, so the ones left are worth your real research time.

AI gets visa rules wrong surprisingly often. Treat this as an elimination exercise, not immigration advice.

Do this before you read one more "Top 10 LGBTQ Destinations" list. It'll save you hours, just not the verification step.

Spain Just Dethroned a 10-Year Champion — But the Visa Math Matters More

Thailand isn't the only place where old assumptions no longer match reality.

Recently, an unmarried couple making €4,000 a month combined probably would've assumed Europe was out of reach. They'd probably have been wrong.

Here's why.

Malta held the #1 spot on the ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map for a decade. Not close — a full decade of being the answer to "which country is legally safest for us." In 2026, ILGA-Europe put Spain first instead, ending that run. Spain already ranked #1 in our own broader 2025 PrideNomad Index, while Malta ranked #5. They measure different things, but both point to Spain becoming one of the strongest relocation options in Europe. (One honest asterisk from the reporting behind ILGA's move: Spain has also seen a real rise in reported hate crimes this year: the legal picture strengthened while the on-the-ground picture got somewhat rougher, at the same time. Both are true.)

Here's why that matters beyond bragging rights: Spain also happens to have one of the most couple-friendly visa systems in Europe, and almost nobody connects those two facts.

Here's the number to remember: Spain's Digital Nomad Visa currently requires about €3,920/month in combined financial means for a couple — just under that hypothetical €4,000 — and, unusually, it recognizes unmarried partners. That's the detail that quietly changes the equation for a lot of LGBTQ couples. (The exact figure moves with Spain's minimum wage, so confirm the current number with a Spanish consulate before applying. But €3,920 is the number to start planning around.)

How that compares elsewhere in Europe:

• Portugal's D8 visa wants about €3,680/month, and offers something Spain doesn't: five years of residency puts you on a path to full citizenship.

• Greece legalized same-sex marriage nationally, runs a nomad visa around €3,500/month, costs $79 to apply, renews up to three years.

• Malta — dethroned but still elite — has the steepest bar of the group at €42,000/year for its digital nomad visa.

Outside Europe, for scale: Colombia's Visa V Nómades Digitales asks for only $1,100/month for two years; Brazil's (South America's first) wants $1,500/month for one year, renewable once.

When we surveyed 1,177 PrideNomad readers this year, 40% told us they weren't nomads yet: still trying to figure out if relocating was even realistic for them. If that's you: run your own actual number against these. That's the whole exercise. Not "where's prettiest," but "where does my number actually clear the bar, today."

Malta won Leading LGBTQ Destination at the Baxter Travel Media Agent's Choice Awards this summer — its tenth straight year near the top of ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Index, plus an IGLTA “Proud Destination” designation and a separate Outstanding Social Responsibility Award from Global Traveler. 4. Canada is quietly closing the door a little

Canada's 2026 targets: 380,000 permanent residents, down from 395,000 last year. The same Atlantis-chartered cruise Turkey turned away last week — carrying roughly 1,900 passengers, mostly American — got its Egyptian docking permission yanked at the last minute too, hours before arrival in Alexandria. Egypt hasn't explained why. Atlantis' CEO called it “strange and sad” and noted the same itinerary sailed without incident last year. Would You Fly Into This Airport?

We spend an enormous amount of energy deciding whether a country is safe for us. We almost never stop to ask whether a name is.

Maybe we should.

I used to live in West Palm Beach, Florida, and flew out of Palm Beach International almost every week — knew the layout, the shortcuts through security, exactly how long the drive took from my door to the gate.

That airport just got renamed. It's now named after the current US president — the first time in American history an airport has carried the name of a sitting president.

The FAA made it official this week; the code on your actual boarding pass switches from PBI to DJT on August 18. Price tag: $5.5 million, part state money, part the airport's own budget.

My first reaction: it made me angry. Furious. Disgusted.

Not over the signage cost — over what that name means to me, as a gay man who's watched this administration work overtime against my community, my marriage rights, my friends' healthcare, my right to simply exist without a fight.

And right behind that came a second reaction: relief that I don't live there anymore. If that were still my airport — the one I actually had to fly out of every week — I genuinely don't know what I'd do with myself.

Do I drive an hour each way to the Fort Lauderdale airport? Or do I suck it up and participate in this insult?

Here's the real question underneath it, and it's bigger than one airport or one man.

How much inconvenience would you eat to still feel like yourself?

This isn't a hypothetical for our community — we run this calculation constantly, just usually about other things. Is this destination safe? Will I be welcomed?

As I wrote this, I read that Turkey just turned away an Atlantis cruise. Do we boycott the country now?

Same question. It's just wearing an airport's uniform instead of a country's.

My answer: I'd pay the extra hour to Fort Lauderdale. Not because it changes anything about that airport — it won't. I'd do it because how I spend my time and money is one of the few things I actually get to control, and I'd rather spend that hour meaning something than save it doing business as usual under his name.

That's my line. Yours might land somewhere else, and that's fine — hit reply and tell me where yours is.

3. Now decide with real numbers in front of you, not a guess. Sometimes the "principled" airport is $12 more. Sometimes it's $180 more. You want to know which one before you commit to a feeling.

Knowing the real number doesn't make the decision for you. It just means you're making it on purpose.

One of the Oldest Queer Traditions in the Americas — and You Can Live Near It for Under $1,000 a Month

Oaxaca, Mexico, is home to the muxe — a recognized third gender among the Zapotec people, documented since before colonization, with muxe individuals historically serving as healers, spiritual leaders, and the organizers of community life. It's one of the oldest continuously living third-gender traditions anywhere in the Americas.

Here's the caveat, because we don't do travelogue here: muxe culture is centered in Juchitán, on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec — a genuinely different part of Oaxaca state, several hours from Oaxaca City, where the affordable digital-nomad life actually happens. You won't stumble into muxe culture from a café in Oaxaca City's Centro. It's a real trip of its own, not a footnote to your nomad month.

And that affordable life is real. Oaxaca City keeps showing up on "cheapest place to live well" lists, and the numbers hold up: most people live comfortably there for $800 to $1,400 a month, all-in. Digital nomads who want more room and regular coworking days land closer to $1,600–$2,400.

A country with a documented, centuries-old tradition of living outside the gender binary is a very different starting point than one that's currently renaming airports after a man who's spent his term working against people like us.

France Didn't Open the Door. It Quietly Locked a Different One.

There's a rumor going around, and I need to catch you before you act on it.

We've started seeing this advice repeated so often that it's beginning to sound like fact.

You've probably seen some version of it — a confident post, a comment thread, a TikTok: "Just move to France on a visitor visa and work remotely. Totally fine."

It is not totally fine.

As of 2025, France officially banned remote work on the long-stay visitor visa — even when every client and employer you have sits on the other side of the ocean. The French tax authorities decided that work done from French soil counts as work done in France, full stop. The visitor visa now comes with a form where you literally sign a promise not to work.

Get caught working anyway, and you're looking at renewal problems — or a polite request to leave the country you just uprooted your whole life for.

And no — France still has no digital nomad visa. Whatever the internet told you.

Here's the part that matters, though. I'm not here to kill the dream. Just the shortcut.

The legal routes still exist — they're just actual immigration pathways instead of internet loopholes: the Profession Libérale (self-employed) visa, the Talent Passport, the Entrepreneur visa. They take more paperwork. They also don't end with you explaining yourself to a préfecture.

The fantasy version of France — land, open your laptop, sort the details out later — is gone.

The grown-up version is very much alive. And the grown-up version is the one that actually lets you stay.

3. If a visa sounds suspiciously easy, assume you're missing the catch — and go find it before it finds you.

Influencers publish first. Governments have the final say — and the government's website is the one that can deport you. Trust the boring source.

The Riviera Hiding One Hill Above the Expensive Part.

Full disclosure before I romanticize the French Riviera: the last time I was there — Nice, about thirty years ago — someone relieved me of my passport straight out of the trunk of my rental car. So take my starry eyes with a grain of Mediterranean salt.

But here's what's true, and what's changed.

Most people picture the Riviera as Nice, Cannes, Saint-Tropez — the yacht-and-champagne coast, with the price tag to match. That's one Riviera. There's another one most people never look up to see: the perched stone villages in the hills right behind it.

Cabris is the postcard — a tiny village above Grasse (yes, the perfume capital), with a castle esplanade that looks clear out to the Mediterranean. Valbonne, Tourettes-sur-Loup, same story. These are the kind of places where your rent buys a view instead of a parking space — and you're still close enough to Nice or Monaco when you want community.

Why bring it up now? Because the whole region just got more interesting for us. Monaco — a short drive along the same coast — just confirmed it's preparing legislation for same-sex civil unions. Nice and Cannes have had an established gay scene for decades; what's shifting is the legal ground underneath the glamour.

One honest caveat: these hill villages are small and quiet. The queer life is down on the coast and in Monaco's orbit — not in the village square. But as a calmer, cheaper base within reach of all of it? The Riviera has a back door, and hardly anyone's using it.

(Just… maybe keep your passport on you.)

Garlic Gays?

Quick exhale from all the visa fine print.

There's a movement spreading across the queer world, and it might be the most wholesome thing going: Gays Eating Garlic Bread in the Park.

That's genuinely the whole event. That's the name. You show up to a park, bring your own garlic bread (yes — BYOGB), and eat it on the grass with a few hundred other queer people.

It started in Seattle in 2024 — one person, homemade posters, hoping maybe 30 might come. This June, 800 showed up. It's since spread to Portland, Chicago, Omaha, even Norway. And this Saturday, July 11, 2–6pm, Calgary gets its turn.

No stage. No sponsors. No cover. No agenda beyond carbs and each other. In a year when a lot of people are just looking for community, a few hundred of them answering "right here, with bread" feels surprisingly important.

Near Calgary Saturday? Go. Not near Calgary? The whole thing started because one person made a poster. You could start one in your park too.

Here's a question I didn't expect to ask myself this week.

Is my mental map of the world completely out of date?

I don't mean my bucket list.

I mean the quiet assumptions I've carried for years about where someone like me could actually build a life.

The problem? The world keeps changing. But our assumptions rarely do.

We've been updating the PrideNomad Index over the past few weeks. And somewhere in the middle of it… I had an uncomfortable realization.

My own map was out of date.

🇳🇵 Nepal — Five years ago I'd never have put it in this conversation. Then this month, a Supreme Court ruling made it one of the newest places on earth where two men can legally marry. Now it's hard to leave out.

🇪🇸 Spain — You'd think a country this far ahead would coast. It hasn't. It keeps quietly strengthening protections while other "progressive" countries stall out. I had to update my own assumptions upward.

🇵🇹 Portugal — I still love it. But if the version of Portugal living in your head is from 2022 or 2023… you're making decisions with an old map. The cost picture, the visa landscape, the day-to-day — some of it has shifted more than you'd think.

Pick the place you're most sure about. The yes, absolutely. Then do this:

Open its subreddit — try r/[cityname], or just search "[city] gay" — and sort by Top → This Month.

Not this year. This month.

In ninety seconds you'll see whether the place living in your head… is the place that actually exists right now.

Sometimes it's better than you remembered. Sometimes it tells you your assumptions are two years stale.

Either way… you'll be looking at what's real instead of what you assumed. And that's worth more than any guidebook.

The Country That Left the "Someday" List.

For years, Thailand sat in a strange category for a lot of our readers.

“Amazing vacation. Probably not somewhere I'd build a life”.

I don't think that's true anymore.

In January 2025, it became the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. Full equality. Not a watered-down civil union. More than 1,700 couples married on day one.

But a law alone doesn't redraw a map. What changed mine was what came next.

Thailand backed the symbolism with infrastructure. A five-year nomad visa is now operational, and the government has been openly courting LGBTQ+ residents and remote workers — as a strategy, not an afterthought.

So the place you once visited for a week… starts to look like a place you could actually stay.

And if you've spent any time in Bangkok or Chiang Mai, you already know the texture of those cities. What's different now isn't the vibe. It's the permission — the legal architecture that turns "I could see myself here" into something you can actually act on.

Now the honest part. Because we don't do travelogue here.

Marriage is law. Lived equality is still a work in progress. Rural Thailand is not Bangkok.

But put it in context. One 2026 safety index now flags 91 countries as high-concern for LGBTQ+ travelers, and another 62 as elevated. Most of the map is getting more cautious.

A country moving decisively in the other direction? That's rare enough to move it off your "someday" list… and onto your real one.

If your map still has Asia greyed out… this is the country redrawing the line.

I could talk for days about how amazing Thailand is (My signature line is “Thai food is so good that they named a country after it".). I lived in Bangkok from 2009-2019. I get my annual health checks there (best deal ever!). So as you re-evaluate YOUR map, consider more than just a holiday there. Spend some time and go deep. It’s worth it.

Here's what I've come to believe after years of doing this.

The Big Surprises We Keep Finding.

We've spent the last several months scoring 194 countries for this year’s updated PrideNomad Index — our full ranking of LGBTQ+ livability around the world, dropping later this year.

Estonia is one of the destinations that surprised us the most. I think it's significantly underrated.

Here's why.

On January 1, 2024, Estonia became the first country in the former Soviet bloc to legalize same-sex marriage. The first Baltic state. Latvia hasn't come close. Lithuania hasn't come close. Much of Eastern Europe is still debating issues Estonia already settled.

A country that was under Soviet occupation until 1991 went from independence to full marriage equality in 33 years.

That sentence stopped me cold when I first saw the data.

When we scored the trends — rights trajectory, public acceptance, infrastructure — Estonia didn't just score well. It came up RISING. And that signal matters more than any snapshot.

But the thing that surprised us most wasn’t the marriage equality story.

It was how much digital infrastructure Estonia built while almost nobody was paying attention.

Estonia isn't just making history on paper. The infrastructure is best-in-class for Eastern Europe.

In fact, if Portugal and Finland had a nerdy little cousin, it might look a lot like Estonia.

Digital Nomad Visa: available.

E-Residency that lets you incorporate a business from anywhere: yes.

Nomad infrastructure score: 8/10 — better than most Western European cities.

Physical safety score: 8/10.

Tallinn is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe, with genuinely fast internet. (That combo doesn't happen as often as you'd think.)

Cost of living: budget $2,000–3,000/month and you're comfortable.

One more thing: next month, thousands of globally curious people are descending on Tallinn for MindValley U 2026. Most of them have no idea what Estonia just did for our community. Now you do.

In the spirit of keeping it real — it's not a fairy tale.

The gay scene is small. Tallinn has one, but it's not Lisbon. It's not Berlin. If you need twelve gay bars within walking distance, this probably isn't your spot. At least not yet.

The winters are serious. The summers are short and genuinely excellent. The country has 1.3 million people, and the community reflects that.

But a former Soviet country that legalized marriage equality before most of its neighbors could even discuss it — with digital infrastructure better than half of Western Europe and costs that won't break you?

That’s not just one of the most interesting LGBTQ stories in Europe.

It might be one of the most overlooked opportunities in Europe.

The Great LGBTQ+ Migration Has Already Started

Most people just haven't noticed it yet.

The biggest shift happening in LGBTQ+ travel right now isn't travel at all.

It's migration.

A few weeks ago, I was talking with a PrideNomad reader who was considering Portugal.

Not moving.

Not retiring.

Not becoming a digital nomad.

Just considering it.

And that's when it hit me.

For years, LGBTQ+ travel was mostly about vacations. Finding welcoming destinations. Attending Pride events. Exploring the world safely.

That's still important.

But something bigger is happening beneath the surface.

People aren't just asking where to visit anymore.

They're asking where to live.

Where to retire.

Where to build a second chapter.

Where to spend the next decade of their lives.

Twenty years ago, many LGBTQ+ people moved because they had to.

They left small towns for larger cities. They relocated to find acceptance, community, opportunity, or simply the freedom to be themselves.

Today, a growing number are moving because they can.

Remote work has untethered millions of people from a physical office.

Retirement is becoming more mobile.

Healthcare costs, housing costs, political uncertainty, and quality-of-life concerns are causing many people to reevaluate where they want to spend their future.

And for the first time in history, LGBTQ+ people have a growing list of countries where building a life abroad isn't just possible—it's practical.

When we created the PrideNomad Index, we evaluated 65 countries based on LGBTQ+ rights, safety, healthcare, social acceptance, visa accessibility, and overall livability.

What surprised me wasn't which countries ranked highest.

It was how many legitimate options now exist.

Spain sits at the top of the list.

Portugal remains one of the strongest combinations of quality of life, affordability, and LGBTQ+ acceptance.

Uruguay has quietly become one of Latin America's most progressive countries.

Thailand continues to attract LGBTQ+ expats looking for affordability, culture, and a welcoming atmosphere.

Costa Rica remains a favorite for those seeking a slower pace of life and access to nature.

None of these places are perfect.

Neither is where you're living now.

That's not the point.

The point is that many of us have more choices than we realize.

Most people never seriously ask themselves a simple question:

"If I could live anywhere in the world, where would I choose?"

Not where your job requires you to be.

Not where your family expects you to be.

Not where you've always been.

Where would you choose?

That's a very different conversation.

And increasingly, it's becoming one of the most important questions LGBTQ+ people can ask.

Because the next chapter of LGBTQ+ freedom may not be about legal equality.

It may be about geographic freedom.

The ability to build your life where you can thrive—not merely survive.

The great LGBTQ+ migration has already begun.

Most people just haven't noticed it yet.

Maybe it's time to start paying attention.

And for many of us, the biggest reason to start paying attention is retirement.

Because if you're rethinking where you want to live... you're also rethinking what retirement actually looks like.

Open Google Maps and zoom into the neighborhood you’re considering.

• Gyms

• Coworking spaces

If all of those require a 20-minute Uber ride, your trip is already worse than you think.

The hotel matters.

The neighborhood matters more.

I’ve stayed in mediocre hotels in fantastic neighborhoods and had a great trip.

I’ve stayed in great hotels in terrible locations and couldn’t wait to leave.

Book the neighborhood first.

The hotel second.

The Lie We Were Sold About Retirement

What if retirement isn't the finish line at all?

For most of my life, retirement was presented as a finish line.

Work hard.

Save your money.

Retire.

Move somewhere warm.

Play golf.

Take cruises.

Wait for grandchildren to visit.

The end.

The problem?

Most LGBTQ+ people I know have absolutely no interest in that plan.

And honestly, neither do I.

One of the most interesting things we've learned from the PrideNomad community is that nearly 30% of our readers are already retired. Many more are approaching retirement within the next decade.

Yet very few seem excited about traditional retirement.

What they're excited about is possibility.

Travel.

Community.

Purpose.

Adventure.

Connection.

A second act.

Maybe even a third.

I think we've been asking the wrong question.

Most retirement planning focuses on:

"When can I retire?"

But the more important question might be:

"What am I retiring to?"

Because if your entire vision of retirement is simply not working anymore, that's not much of a vision.

You can only play so much golf.

You can only watch so much television.

You can only reorganize the garage so many times.

Eventually, most people need something more.

They need meaning.

One of the advantages LGBTQ+ people often have is that many of us have already reinvented ourselves at least once.

Coming out is a reinvention.

Building a chosen family is a reinvention.

Starting over after a relationship ends is a reinvention.

Moving to a new city is a reinvention.

We've had practice.

Which may be why so many LGBTQ+ retirees aren't looking for a rocking chair.

They're looking for a runway.

Some want to spend months living abroad.

Some want to volunteer.

Some want to mentor younger LGBTQ+ people.

Some want to finally write the book, start the business, learn the language, take the cooking class, or pursue the dream that got postponed while they were building careers and paying bills.

What strikes me is how many people are waiting for permission.

Permission to travel.

Permission to move.

Permission to change.

Permission to start again.

So let me offer a gentle reminder.

You don't need anyone's permission.

If you're fortunate enough to reach retirement (or if you’re serious about creating a location-independent life), you've earned the right to design the next chapter intentionally.

Not according to someone else's script.

According to your own.

Maybe retirement isn't the end of your story.

Maybe it's finally your opportunity to write the chapter you've been wanting to write all along.

And if that's true, the question isn't whether you're ready to retire.

The question is whether you're ready to begin.

I Kissed John Tanzella Once. I'm Glad I Did.

Osaka, 2025. John wore the kimono better than anyone in the room.

Hey, PrideNomad —

That's me in the red shirt.

And that's John Tanzella.

President and CEO of the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association for the past 20 years.

Last year in Osaka, I watched John walk into the IGLTA convention hall in a full kimono.

He had the energy of a man who'd clearly been thinking about that outfit choice for weeks…

And was absolutely delighted with himself.

Every person in the room was smiling before he'd said a single word.

That was John.

But here's what I keep coming back to this week.

When you were with him… you felt like the only person in the room.

Not in some performative, "I'm a great listener" kind of way.

He was emotionally present in a way that's genuinely rare.

He connected with you. He saw you.

Not the business card version of you.

You.

In an industry full of handshakes and networking… that was his superpower.

And he gave it freely. Without keeping score.

I felt it. Everyone who met him felt it.

John passed away this Sunday, after a long illness.

Here's what 20 years of his work actually looks like from the outside:

That hotel that trained its staff to genuinely welcome you — not just tolerate you?

Probably went through IGLTA certification.

That destination that started competing for our community's attention… instead of hoping we'd quietly show up?

John's influence.

That travel professional who finally understood that LGBTQ+ travelers aren't a niche — that we're full human beings who want to feel safe, not just accommodated?

John spent two decades making that the industry standard.

A lot of the opportunities our community enjoys today didn't happen by accident.

They happened because John showed up.

Year after year. Conference after conference. Country after country.

He brought people together. Opened doors. And proved that LGBTQ+ travel wasn't a trend — it was a market, a community, and a cause worth fighting for.

He started at Delta Airlines. Moved to the Human Rights Campaign. Then Destination DC.

Then arrived at IGLTA — and stayed.

Because the work mattered.

Under his leadership, IGLTA became the only LGBTQ+ Affiliate Member of UN Tourism.

A seat at the table where global tourism policy gets written — with our lives on the agenda.

Osaka — And What I Really Thought of the Food

I almost didn't go to Osaka.

I'm glad I did.

But I have some confessions to make.

Confession #1: I am not a Japanese food person.

I tried. I genuinely tried.

There were people around me at every meal practically vibrating with joy — screaming with delight at things placed in front of us — and I was sitting there smiling politely…

Dying a little on the inside.

It just isn't my palate.

One night, I found a burger.

I'm not sorry.

Confession #2: I also had the single best bite of seafood of my entire life in Osaka.

The incredibly welcoming Swissôtel Nankai Osaka (our host hotel) brought out a whole tuna. Full fish.

Carved it in front of us — ceremony, theater, the whole production.

What arrived on my plate wasn't what I'd ever called sashimi before.

The freshest thing I've ever tasted.

I didn't know fish could do that.

That one moment made every politely-endured meal worth it.

And then there was 551 Horai.

If Japanese cuisine isn't your natural comfort zone… 551 Horai (551蓬莱) is your lifeline.

Been feeding Osaka since 1945.

Their butaman — steamed pork and onion buns — and their shumai dumplings are the kind of food that works for everyone. Regardless of palate.

I went for takeout from the Namba Station location.

Then I went back and ate in the restaurant.

Both times: right decision.

Find them in the major train stations, airports, and department store basements all over Osaka.

If there's a queue, join it. The locals know.

On the gay scene:

I was in Osaka for their Pride parade.

Walked with them.

It was — and I say this with full affection — the most charmingly disorganized parade I have ever witnessed.

Nothing like Sydney Mardi Gras. Nothing like New York or Chicago or Wilton Manors.

There was a gathering in a park afterward where I met genuinely fun people…

And the whole thing had this loose, joyful, slightly chaotic energy that I found completely endearing.

But here's the thing.

It was done.

Every LGBTQ+ community moves at its own pace. Every culture has a different history with visibility… a different relationship with openness… a different point of evolution.

The Osaka community isn't West Hollywood.

But there were people there. Marching. In a country where same-sex marriage isn't yet federally recognized.

That says something.

John Tanzella understood this better than anyone — that progress isn't one size or one speed.

And that showing up matters… even when the parade doesn't have a permit.

IGLTA maintains a global directory of certified member businesses — hotels, tour operators, travel advisors, cruise lines — that have made a documented commitment to LGBTQ+ welcoming practices.

Not just hung a flag.

Actually trained their staff. Put their name on record.

Before you book accommodation abroad — especially in a destination you're less certain about — run it through the IGLTA directory.

An IGLTA-certified hotel in a complicated country is a meaningfully different experience than a non-certified one.

5 Ways to Research Real LGBTQ+ Safety Before You Book

Most LGBTQ+ travelers research a destination the same way.

Instagram. A few travel blogs. Maybe a Reddit thread from 2021.

That's not research.

That's vibes.

Here's what actually works — in order of reliability:

1. The IGLTA Member Directory
Hotels, tour operators, and advisors listed here have made a documented commitment to LGBTQ+ welcoming practices. Not performed it. Committed to it.

2. State Department + Equivalent
The U.S. State Department publishes LGBTQ+ travel advisories for every country. So does the UK's FCDO and Canada's travel.gc.ca. Cross-reference all three — different governments flag different risks.

3. ILGA World's Annual Legal Map
The most comprehensive map of LGBTQ+ legal status on the planet. Updated every year. Criminalization, equal marriage, trans protections — every country, current year.

4. The Facebook Group Test
Search "[city name] LGBTQ expats" before any trip. An active group with recent posts tells you two things: the community exists… and people feel safe enough to organize publicly. The pinned posts will surface safety intel no travel blog publishes.

5. Recent News — Not Travel Content
Search "[destination] + LGBTQ" filtered to the past 12 months. In news — not blogs. Crackdowns and legal changes rarely appear on travel sites until they've been trending for weeks. News tells you what's actually happening now.

These five steps take 20 minutes.

They'll tell you more than every "LGBTQ+-friendly" badge on every booking site combined.

I've been thinking about Greece again.

Not because of the Instagram shots.

Not because it's trending.

But because every time I talk to someone who's spent real time there, they say the same thing:

"It changed something in me."

When most people think about Greece, they think about the scenery.

The white buildings of Santorini.

The blue-domed churches.

The ancient ruins.

The islands.

The food.

And all of that is wonderful.

But I don't think that's the real reason so many people fall in love with Greece.

I think Greece understands something that much of the modern world has forgotten.

It understands leisure.

Not vacation.

Leisure.

Those aren't the same thing.

Vacation is what happens when exhausted people temporarily escape lives that have become too busy.

You take a week off.

You try to relax.

You fail.

Because you can't stop checking email, planning the next thing, optimizing the experience.

Leisure is different.

Leisure is the belief that life itself should contain space.

Not as a reward.

As a baseline.

Time to sit.

Time to wander.

Time to talk.

Time to enjoy a meal without simultaneously answering emails, scrolling Instagram, and planning tomorrow's schedule.

One of the things that fascinates me about Greece is that many parts of the country still operate on a rhythm that feels strangely rebellious in 2026.

Especially if you're coming from North America.

In much of the United States, efficiency has become a religion.

Everything is optimized.

Everything is accelerated.

Everything is measured.

We're constantly trying to arrive somewhere.

Greece often feels like a country asking a different question:

"What if there isn't anywhere urgent to arrive?"

What if the point isn't optimization?

What if the point is just... this?

One of my favorite lessons from this cruise was surprisingly simple:

Ask.

I just finished my fourth business mastermind cruise.

Why Curaçao Feels Different Right Now

I'm writing this from the deck of the Celebrity Beyond somewhere between Miami and St. Kitts.

Watching the Caribbean slide by.

Thinking about Pride Month.

Which, honestly, feels a little broken this year.

Some Pride events are struggling with sponsorships. Some companies that wrapped themselves in rainbow logos a year ago are suddenly quieter now. The political temperature feels hotter in some places. Colder in others.

And maybe that's why I keep thinking about Curaçao.

Because while parts of the world seem louder, angrier, and more performative right now, Curaçao feels refreshingly… relaxed.

Not perfect. Not a fantasy island. Just easier to breathe in.

That may not sound like much until you've traveled enough as an LGBTQ+ person to understand how exhausting it can be to constantly evaluate your surroundings. To subtly monitor reactions. To wonder if you should tone yourself down at dinner, on the beach, or walking back to your hotel at night.

Curaçao doesn't completely erase that instinct.

But it softens it.

Part of that comes from the island's unusual cultural blend. Curaçao feels distinctly Caribbean, but with a strong Dutch influence layered underneath. The result is a multilingual, outward-facing culture that often feels more internationally minded than many travelers expect.

You hear Dutch, Papiamento, Spanish, and English floating through the streets of Willemstad. The architecture looks like Amsterdam collided with the tropics. The cafés spill out onto colorful sidewalks. And the overall energy feels more "live and let live" than performative or macho.

That matters.

Especially now.

There's a café in Willemstad where the tables spill out onto a pastel-painted street.

You can sit there for two hours with a coffee and a book.

No one stares. No one rushes you. No one performs.

It's just… normal.

And after years of not feeling normal in public, that hits different.

Over the past few years, Curaçao has quietly developed a growing reputation among LGBTQ+ travelers looking for something calmer than the party circuits of Mykonos or Puerto Vallarta. There's still nightlife if you want it. Still beach clubs. Still cocktails under the stars.

But the island's real appeal is emotional.

It feels less like a scene to survive… and more like a place to exhale.

And maybe that's what a lot of us are craving right now.

Now I can't go five minutes without someone asking to borrow it.

Pride Month is coming.

And I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.

Not because of the politics.

(Though yeah, those don't help.)

But because something else is happening this year.

A lot of Pride events are losing their sponsors.

Major brands that wrapped themselves in rainbow logos for the last decade?

Suddenly less interested.

Some festivals have scaled down. Others are scrambling to replace funding gaps. A few have canceled entirely.

And honestly?

Part of me feels relieved.

Which is a weird thing to admit out loud.

Visibility matters. Funding matters. Representation matters.

But somewhere along the way...

Parts of Pride started feeling less like a movement and more like a marketing campaign with better lighting.

Less about us.

More about them looking good while standing next to us.

And maybe that's why this year feels strange.

Because we're being forced to remember what Pride actually was before the banks showed up.

Before the branded tents.

Before the influencer partnerships.

Before every corporation on Earth decided that one month a year, they'd pretend to give a shit.

Pride used to be scrappy.

Messy community energy. Volunteers carrying water bottles down overheated streets. Local drag queens holding entire events together with duct tape and charisma. Awkward first-timers nervously showing up alone. Older couples quietly holding hands in public after decades of not being able to.

That's the real heartbeat of Pride.

And maybe this year gives us a chance to rediscover some of it.

Smaller events may actually feel more personal. More local. More connected to the communities they serve instead of trying to become giant branded spectacles that look good in a press release.

Maybe Pride becomes less about corporate approval and more about human belonging again.

Because at its core, Pride was never really about sponsorships.

It was about people deciding they deserved joy, visibility, safety, love, and community in a world that didn't always make room for them.

That still matters.

Maybe now more than ever.

And if this year's Pride feels a little smaller, a little scrappier, and a little more ours again...

Maybe that's not entirely a bad thing.

A lot of queer people aren't just burned out from work right now.

We're burned out from noise.

Big-city noise.
Political noise.
Social media noise.

I probably wouldn't recommend it if your primary goal is dating, nightlife, or deep queer community immersion.

Stillness.

And maybe that's part of what Pride means this year too.

Not just visibility.
Not just celebration.

Cruise ship excursions are convenient.

They are also:

• overcrowded

• overpriced

• rushed

• and often the most touristy version of a destination possible

The Hack

In many ports, you’re better off creating your own mini-adventure.

• Use Uber if available
