It’s fair to say 2025 has been a tumultuous year in more ways than one, and the gear world has been no different. We got a truly innovative knife design from a knife sharpener company, a fresh take on a classic from the world’s favorite multitool company, a brand new multitool that nearly broke Kickstarter from a popular YouTube channel, and I—definitely not a knife designer—designed and launched three different designs with three different companies.

There has also been no shortage of newness and innovation outside of the knife and multitool world, so I decided to break all of this down into a Gear of the Year video, which is now live over on the YouTube channel. You can also find it embedded down below.

Gift Guides

It’s that time of year. Gift guides galore. I’ve already made two—one for the EDC items that I think make great gifts this year and one for truck gear. But there’s one more coming soon, focusing on budget-friendly items that will still arrive before the big day.

One Item Survival Challenge

About a month ago, we were at Georgia Bushcraft when our good friend Ben Petersen challenged me. He told me I should make a video without thinking about it and without planning. So I made him give me a prompt. What he came up with was a fun little thought experiment about being on a plane that’s going down, you land on a remote island and you lose everything in your carry except the one thing you managed to grab.

What’s the one thing in your carry you would make sure you had in that scenario? Is it your knife? A multitool? Something else? I went around Georgia Bushcraft and asked a handful of survival experts what they would grab.

It was a nice change of pace and a really fun video to make and watch. It definitely won’t be the last one like this either. Give it a watch and let me know what your one item would be.

Gaslight Industries

At long last, several months after initially planning to launch, we got Gaslight Industries off the ground and the first batch of Jerry Can Lighters out the door. They sold out very quickly.

Fortunately, I have some good news. We’ve decided to squeeze in one more drop in 2025. It will be pretty limited, since we weren’t planning on it, but we’re going to do our best to do another drop (sometime this week) and get them all finished up and out the door to arrive before Christmas.

Carry Commission

Carry Commission Camp Mule

This week is a big one for Carry Commission. We’re launching our very first in-house product, a knife designed by yours truly, the Camp Mule. We partnered with LT Wright Knives to have the knife made, and they absolutely crushed it.

This knife, as the name suggests, is meant to be a do-it-all knife around the camp. It’s a medium-sized drop point fixed blade with a flat grind A2 tool steel blade. The handle is a natural micarta with brass pins and a brass lanyard tube. And the Camp Mule ships with a pocket sheath made by JRE Industries and an UltiClip. These are dropping tomorrow, Tuesday December 9, at 2:00 pm EDT in limited quantities.

Proof Razor x Carry Commission

Last month, Carry Commission teamed up with Proof Razors out of Montana to bring to life one of the coolest projects we’ve done to date. We took their single blade razor, added our signature topographical pattern, the ass logo, and a copper anodizing.

Sure, it’s might just seem like a simple single blade razor, but these things work exceptionally well, have stupid simple blade swaps with an off-the-shelf razor, and will last a lifetime. It also comes with a leather pouch for storage and travel, and that pouch stores a handful of spare blades.

We’re restocking these razors on Thursday at 2:00 pm EDT and this will be the last restock for a while, so don’t miss them this time around.

If you’ve ever skipped a tool because “reviews said no,” this one’s for you.

A viewer named Daegan from NC wrote in explaining that he never would have bought a Leatherman Free K4 for himself due to reviews and general perception of the EDC world. But when his wife bought him one, he learned he loved it and carries it every day.

I dive into how what we say as reviewers—and even how the EDC world at large feels about things—shapes the entire industry, intentional or not. There’s that and more in this week’s Deep Cuts.

OTFs and Leatherman

You should be carrying an OTF–unless they’re illegal where you live. I talk about seven reasons OTFs are really the best EDC knives and four reasons why you should avoid them in this OTF breakdown.

I also made a massive comparison video between all of Leatherman’s best multitools — the Arc, Wave+, Wave Alpha, Surge, and Charge (RIP). Other EDC favorites like the Signal and Skeletool CX also make an appearance.

If you’ve been trying to see how the Wave Alpha stacks up physically and dimensionally with the other heavy hitters in Leatherman’s lineup, this is the video you need to watch.

Deep Cuts

This week, we’re talking about the worst trends in everyday carry. From titanium pry bars to bottle openers on everything, the community had plenty to say. We’ve also got some wild knife news (including a guy who lived eight years with a blade in his chest), Leatherman dropping sheaths and accessories, a new Show and Tell, giveaways, and more in this week’s Deep Cuts.

A couple of weeks ago, it came to light that some orders from Leatherman’s own store were not shipping with the accessories that had previously been included. Upon digging further, it has since been confirmed, and it’s not a fluke. Dominic over at MAXLVLEDC confirmed that most of Leatherman’s multitools that have come with included belt sheaths no longer do. This also affects models, like the Arc, which previously shipped with a single sleeve of flat bits. That’s also off the table.

What that means is, now, if you want a Leatherman with a sheath, you have to buy it separately. You have to buy bits separately. Leatherman accessories are no longer gimmes; they’re à la carte. And if you want to take advantage of the included free shipping, you'd better buy the accessories when you buy the tool.

On one hand, I understand. Prices are increasing across the board, and likely, what is happening here is, instead of bumping their pricing further, Leatherman decided to no longer include a costly freebie that most people probably discard anyway. I, for one, have never once used an included Leatherman sheath, and I’ve owned dozens of Leathermans at this point. I don’t mind the sheath not being included in the least. I’d be much more likely to don the likes of a TaleofKnives belt sheath or something aftermarket anyway.

That said, also no longer including free bits with the upper echelon of tools, like the Arc, does feel like they tried to eek this one by without anyone noticing. That’s a bigger sting than the sheath, in my opinion.

For what it’s worth, Leatherman is currently running a 25% off sale on all accessories.

Swiss Army Killer?

This week, we were introduced to the Smith Blade from Hacksmith over on YouTube. With an M390 blade and 20 other tools housed in its relatively trim handle, it’s their modernized take on the Swiss Army Knife.

After years of stagnation in the multitool space, this looks like a seriously legitimate new direction with some serious thought put into it. Here is the list of all 21 features:

My Truck EDC

We haven’t talked about trucks much on the channel over the last year, and for good reason. I haven’t thought much about trucks over the last year. But I have a new(ish) truck and I’m going to be doing a full build-out on my 2018 Ford F-150 Raptor.

This first video in the series isn’t too fancy—there are more of my kids’ snacks and wipes than there are interesting pieces of gear. But this will be the first of many in this new series, so stay tuned for more interesting truck gear.

Hawk Knife Designs sues Microtech Knives

Gavin Hawk, owner of Hawk Knife Designs, announces that he’s filed a lawsuit against Microtech for patent infringement. He claims their new ZBP knife uses his patented Deadlock mechanism—a design specifically made to eliminate blade play in OTF knives.

According to Hawk, a cease and desist was sent, Microtech didn’t respond well, and now it’s in the hands of the court.

RZE UTD-8000 back in stock

The much-awaited RZE UTD-8000, an extremely tough, titanium digital watch, pre-order is open again. These currently run for $230 and are available in a blue, black, or yellow dial and will ship in July or August.

WESN x Chris Ramsay 1st Puzzle

WESN partnered with one of my favorite YouTube creators, Chris Ramsay, to create the WESN x Chris Ramsay 1st Puzzle Box and Microblade. If you are interested, act fast because there are only 500 made and it’s a one-time deal. They won’t be made again.

Hot Take

I get comments all the time that say things like:

• “Why are all these knives so small?”

• “That’s too dainty.”

• “You can’t do real work with that.”

In fact, one of the more common criticisms I read about my own knife design, the Civivi Clingman, is that it’s too small and not enough of a knife, which I find kind of absurd. I have larger-than-average hands, and I can get a full four-finger grip on the handle. Not only that, but it was inspired by the knives that my grandfather used…to run a farm and live a very blue-collar life.

All of these giant titanium slabs of knives are a fairly modern trend. And don’t get me wrong, I love big knives. I often carry the Chris Reeve Umnumzaan or even a large fixed blade. But to be honest, more often than not, I find myself adjusting back towards a smaller knife after just a short time carrying a pocket tank.

What sent me down this path is the recent release from Knafs, the Little Lulu. I grabbed it and threw it in the pocket because I was wearing shorts and I wanted something a little smaller and lighter than my Tactile Redhawk. I wasn’t an immediate fan of the Little Lulu, but I remembered what Ben Petersen said in the Kickstarter video. He designed the Little Lulu because when he was in the jungle field testing the original Lulu, a larger bushcraft knife, he kept finding himself asking to borrow smaller knives so he could do detail work and perform tasks his larger knife just couldn’t do well.

My question is: what exactly are you doing with your knife? Because unless you’re batoning firewood in your driveway or working full-time in a trade, you probably don’t need a six-inch fixed blade to open your next Amazon box.

Sure, there are exceptions. If I’m cutting a lawn mower belt or working on something that requires leverage, yeah—I’m grabbing something bigger. But that’s once in a blue moon. For 99% of what I use a knife for, a smaller blade just makes more sense.

So no, you don’t need a big knife. You might like one. That’s cool. I like big knives, too. But this idea that anything under 2 inches is a toy? That’s nonsense. Small knives are probably better for what you need.

On My Radar

About a week before Blade Show, things are typically pretty quiet. But Melissa and TKell Knives teamed up to release the WharnEDC. It’s built on the same platform as the Pirahna, but with a wharncliffe blade. Rikki made a reelumentary about it over on Instagram if you want the full rundown. He also mentioned there will be a special version available at Blade Show next week.

Pro-Tech is also releasing a Blade Show special edition of the TR-3.1 in an antique PVD finish and black fish scale aluminum handles.

Monkey Edge posted the RMJ Mortifier, a tiny keychain/neck knife axe. It’s not exactly my style, but it’s hard to deny the cool factor.

UltiClip announced APH, a new belt attachment for Kydex sheaths. It’s an ultra-minimalist wire clip—very slim, strong, and simple. The APH will be coming out June 6th at Blade Show.

Community Hot Take

Let’s start with a hot take from Instagram. This one’s from @freowin97 on Instagram, who said: “It’s not everyday carry if you rotate everything every day.”

I’ve talked about this before. Honestly, for most of the time I’ve been running this channel, I haven’t felt like I truly have an everyday carry. New gear comes in constantly—pre-release stuff, prototypes, new drops—and I end up swapping things in and out almost daily. It’s part of the job.

That means I often carry more than I need, or multiples of the same thing. It’s not the minimalist, utilitarian approach EDC was built on. But EDC as a whole has changed—it’s not just about sharing how you conceal carry anymore. It’s also about trying new stuff and enjoying it, sharing it with the community.

Let’s take a look at what I’m carrying now, for example:

That’s actually a return to what I used to carry. A lot of this stuff has become my baseline. I may swap in a new knife here and there, but the core hasn’t changed much. Even when I rotate, I’m rotating within the same set of tools.

So, does switching between five Redhawks mean I don’t have an EDC? I don’t think so. I see EDC more as a framework: knife, light, wallet, pen, etc. The items don’t have to be exactly the same every day.

That’s how I look at it. But I want to know what you think.

Like I said, things tend to slow down prior to Blade Show East in Atlanta. It’s just two weeks away, and a lot of brands tend to hold things back for the big show. But not Big Idea Design.

Today, the Chattanooga-based EDC company officially released the Overlook, their third folder and easily the best of the bunch. It’s a smaller, more gentlemanly folder. It’s sleek, thin, slicey, and still packs a punch. But I’ll let Big Idea’s own Brantley explain it above.

Missed The Point

This week’s comment comes from @stephenh.3297 over on YouTube, and he said, “No wonder I tuned this channel out. Everyday people don’t carry knives that expensive. I spent $120 on my Para 2 back in the day, and I’d rather have three more than that thing.”

That comment was about the Dixon—a knife that costs $625. Which, yeah, is a lot for one knife. But here’s the thing: not every knife we show here is $600. And not everyone wants to carry a $20 knife from Walmart either. People carry what they like, and everyone’s preferences—and budgets—are different.

If you want something American-made, $120 is basically the floor right now. And even that’s pushing it. TRM might be the closest you’ll get, and they’re creeping up toward $200 too. The point isn’t just how much a knife costs or where it’s made—it’s about what excites you. What gets carried. What makes you say, “Yeah, that’s worth it to me.”

We cover a wide range on this channel. Some of it’s expensive. Some of it’s not. The SOG PowerPint I carry is like $35. My flashlight’s maybe $40. I carry gear from all over the map.

But if this channel only covered budget knives, it’d get old fast. There’s only so many sub-$100 knives before everything starts to blur together. That’s not interesting to me. And I don’t think it’s interesting to most of you either.

It’s like car YouTube. You could watch someone review Civics and Camrys all day—but every now and then, it’s fun to see a Ferrari or a Raptor or something you’ll probably never own, just to see what’s out there. What people are building. What’s possible.

That’s why we feature stuff across the board. Because there’s value in seeing the whole spectrum, not just what fits in your budget. I’m not asking you to buy a $600 knife. I’m just showing you what’s out there. What moves us. What feels worth talking about.

And on top of that, Rikki’s not just making knife reviews—he’s telling stories. About the makers, the process, the why behind the blade. It’s not just shiny objects on a table. There’s more to it than that.

So no hard feelings if that’s not your thing. But we’re not gonna make just one kind of video here. That’s not why we started this—and it’s definitely not where we’re going.
