Set to roll out in the coming months, Training Cluster as a Service will be powered by DGX Cloud, Nvidia’s all-inclusive AI “supercomputer” in the cloud. DGX Cloud includes access to a cloud instance with eight Nvidia H100 or A100 GPUs and 640GB of GPU memory, as well as Nvidia’s AI Enterprise software to develop AI apps and large language models, and consultations with Nvidia experts.

🍎 Apple Looks to Strengthen AI for Mobile Devices

Apple is reportedly beefing up the generative artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities of its mobile devices.

To that end, the company has begun hiring for dozens of roles to work on large language models (LLMs), the Financial Times reported Sunday (Aug. 6).

The job postings say the tech giant is embarked on “ambitious long-term research projects that will impact the future of Apple, and our products.” The report notes that the lists suggest Apple is focused on bringing technologies like LLMs specifically to mobile, whereas competitors like Google have released AI products like chatbots.

💰 Stay Ai Raises $15.1M in Series A Funding

Stay Ai, a NYC-based customer loyalty operating system for Shopify brands, raised a $15.1m Series A funding.

The funding consisted of an $8.6m investment led by Telescope Partners, with participation from Boulder Food Group, Riverpark Ventures, and Vanterra Capital. Previous investments total $7.5m led by Watchfire Ventures, alongside industry leaders such as Nik Sharma (Sharma Brands) and Adam Turner (Postscript).

The company intends to use the funds to expand its product-centric 50+ team, and support the acquisition strategy.

🧠 Google's 'Mind-Reading' AI

By examining a person's brain activity, artificial intelligence (AI) can produce a song that matches the genre, rhythm, mood and instrumentation of music that the individual recently heard.

Scientists have previously "reconstructed" other sounds from brain activity, such as human speech, bird song and horse whinnies. However, few studies have attempted to recreate music from brain signals.

Now, researchers have built an AI-based pipeline, called Brain2Music, that harnesses brain imaging data to generate music that resembles short snippets of songs a person was listening to when their brain was scanned. They described the pipeline in a paper, published July 20 to the preprint database arXiv, which has not yet been peer-reviewed.

🪖 US Air Force Successfully Uses AI to Pilot XQ-58A Valkyrie

In a historic first, the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) successfully flew an XQ-58A Valkyrie aircraft piloted entirely by AI. The 3-hour flight took place on July 25th at Eglin Air Force Base, marking a major step forward for autonomous military aviation.

The XQ-58 Valkyrie, a low-cost, high-performance, stealthy unmanned combat aerial vehicle, has been at Eglin for a little less than a year. The successful flight is a testament to the intensive development process the Autonomous Air Combat Operations (AACO) team underwent in creating the AI algorithms. They honed the AI during millions of hours in high-fidelity simulation events, sorties on the X-62 VISTA, Hardware-in-the-Loop events with the XQ-58A, and ground test operations. It is not just an accomplishment for the AFRL, but a clear signal of the direction that modern aviation and warfare are heading.

🏷️ Instagram Considers AI-Generated Content Labels

Instagram is reportedly considering a feature that would notify users when artificial intelligence (AI) has played a role in creating a post. Posts created by AI would be accompanied by a label explaining its involvement. This raises the question of whether such labels could also help users identify when an entire account is AI-generated.

Three popular influencers on Instagram, Lil Miquela, Imma, and Shudu, have amassed millions of followers and secured lucrative brand deals. Despite their bios referencing their “digital persona” and their photos having an uncanny appearance, many followers still believe they are real. In truth, these influencers are the creations of tech firms that utilize graphic designers, digital artists, and AI technology to generate images.

Initially reported by Windows Latest and shared in multiple tweets, the trademark registration is intended to cover a broad range of categories. Primarily, they cover downloadable computer programs and software related to language models, artificial production of human speech and text, natural language processing, generation, understanding, and analysis.

The application also includes software for machine-learning-based language and speech processing, translation of text or speech from one language to another, sharing datasets for machine learning, predictive analytics, and building language models.

💼 Kickstarter requires generative AI projects to disclose additional info

As generative AI enters the mainstream, crowdfunding platform Kickstarter has struggled to formulate a policy that satisfies parties on all sides of the debate.

Most of the generative AI tools used to create art and text today, including Stable Diffusion and ChatGPT, were trained on publicly available images and text from the web. But in many cases, the artists, photographers and writers whose content was scraped for training haven’t been given credit, compensation or a chance to opt out.

The groups behind these AI tools argue that they’re protected by fair use doctrine — at least in the U.S. But content creators don’t necessarily agree, particularly where AI-generated content — or the AI tools themselves — are being monetized.

Recently, advanced generative models such as DALL-E and Midjourney, celebrated for their impressive precision and user-friendly interfaces, have made the production of hyper-realistic images relatively effortless. DoorDash is reportedly testing a chatbot feature within its app, according to reporting from Bloomberg.

According to the governmental body, the number of people-turned-deviants using AI technology as part of phishing attacks or malware development has been increasing at an alarming rate - and that the impact of their operations is only increasing.

We've covered reports of how even locked-in AI models such as ChatGPT have been used to develop malware that's adept at evading even the latest security systems. Polymorphic malware, as it's known, is a piece of software that used to require a highly-skilled black-hat coder (or group of coders) to achieve; now, it's been democratized towards a context window.

Apple is developing artificial intelligence tools to challenge OpenAI, Google and others, according to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The tech giant has created a chatbot that some engineers are internally referring to as “Apple GPT.” Apple has yet to determine a strategy for releasing the technology to consumers, but is reportedly aiming to make a significant AI-related announcement next year.

The report says Apple has built its own framework, codenamed “Ajax,” to create large language models, which are AI-based systems that power offerings like Open AI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. Ajax runs on Google Cloud and was built with Google JAX, the search giant’s machine learning framework, according to Bloomberg. Apple is leveraging Ajax to create large language models and serve as the foundation for the internal ChatGPT-style tool.

Meta announced it’s open-sourcing its large language model LLaMA 2, making it free for commercial and research use and going head-to-head with OpenAI’s free-to-use GPT-4, which powers tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Bing.

Meta announced the move as part of Microsoft’s Inspire event, noting its support for Azure and Windows and a “growing” partnership between the two companies. At the same time, Microsoft revealed more details about the AI tools built into its 360 platform and how much those will cost. Qualcomm also announced it is working with Meta to bring LLaMa to laptops, phones, and headsets starting from 2024 onward for AI-powered apps that work without relying on cloud services.

The perp in question, David Zayas, was traveling through the small upstate town of Scarsdale when he was pulled over by Westchester County police. Google CEO Sundar Pichai sounded the alarm about the dangers of using AI to create fake videos of public figures, a task he says will soon be "easy."

Pichai made the comments during a conversation with CBS' "60 Minutes," telling interviewer Scott Pelley that Google is placing limits on its Bard AI to prevent misuse.

"It will be possible with AI to create-- you know, a video, easily. Where it could be Scott saying something, or me saying something, and we never said that," Pichar told Pelley. "And it could look accurate. But you know, on a societal scale, you know, it can cause a lot of harm."

"Is Bard safe for society?" Pelley asked.

When Justin used ChatGPT at work earlier this year, he was pleased by how helpful it was. A research scientist at a Boston-area biotechnology firm, he’d asked the chatbot to create a genetic testing protocol — a task that can take him hours, but it was reduced to mere seconds using the popular artificial intelligence tool.

He was excited by how much time the chatbot saved him, he said, but in April, his bosses issued a strict edict: ChatGPT was banned for employee use. It’s been a little over a week since OpenAI disabled their ‘Web Browsing’ feature for ChatGPT. Though the feature was technically in Beta, it was a very helpful addition to an already robust AI chat model.

For those missing the feature as much as I am, don’t fret; there’s an alternative solution. If you are a ChatGPT Plus user with Plugin access, you can install the free ‘WebPilot’ plugin that essentially does the exact same thing, dare I say, better?

🤖 Google collecting public data to improve AI

Over the weekend, Google updated its privacy policy to allow the company to collect and analyze information people share online to train its AI models.

Google says it will use this information to improve its services and develop new AI-powered products.

The update to Google’s privacy policy reads:

“Google uses information to improve our services and to develop new products, features, and technologies that benefit our users and the public. For example, we use publicly available information to help train Google’s AI models and build products and features like Google Translate, Bard, and Cloud AI capabilities.”

Chinese technology giant Alibaba on Friday launched an artificial intelligence tool that can generate images from prompts.

Tongyi Wanxiang allows users to input prompts in Chinese and English and the AI tool will generate an image in various styles such as a sketch or 3D cartoon.

🤖 World's most advanced humanoid robot, Ameca, draws a cat

Ameca, the world's most expressive robot, is now trying her hand at art.

Engineered Arts, a company that designs, engineers, and manufactures humanoid robots, which is also behind Ameca, has now given Ameca the power to imagine drawings.

In a video released on their YouTube Channel on June 29, 2023, Ameca is being asked to make a drawing of a cat. Previously, Engineered Arts have demonstrated Ameca's ability to express many different kinds of human emotions and their ability to speak in multiple languages.

💰 Two ETF experts reveal their top tech and A.I. plays for 2023′s second half

Investors may want to stick with what’s working in the market.

ETF experts Todd Sohn and VettaFi’s Dave Nadig believe a second winning half is in store for technology and artificial intelligence plays.

Sohn, Strategas’ ETF and technical strategist, particularly likes Roundhill Generative AI and Technology ETF (CHAT).

“What I like about [CHAT] is that it’s actively managed,” Sohn told CNBC’s “ETF Edge” this week. “This would be my preferred route if you want to get that AI exposure and see how real the demand is.”

CHAT is up more than 10% so far this year.

🌧 AI is Tackling Climate Change!

AI and accelerated computing will help climate researchers achieve the miracles they need to achieve breakthroughs in climate research, NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang said during a keynote Monday at the Berlin Summit for the Earth Virtualization Engines initiative.

“Richard Feynman once said that ‘what I can’t create, I don’t understand’ and that’s the reason why climate modeling is so important,” Huang told 180 attendees at the Harnack House in Berlin, a storied gathering place for the region’s scientific and research community.

“And so the work that you do is vitally important to policymakers to researchers to the industry,” he added.

To advance this work, the Berlin Summit brings together participants from around the globe to harness AI and high performance computing for climate prediction.

🤖 Moody’s Will Use Microsoft, OpenAI for Research Tool to Assess Risk

Moody’s Corp. is using Microsoft Corp. and OpenAI to create an artificial intelligence assistant that will help customers of the credit rating and research firm analyze reams of information needed to make assessments of risk.

“Moody’s Research Assistant” will roll out to customers including analysts, bankers, advisers, researchers and investors. The company expects to have a version to show some clients later this year, Chief Executive Officer Rob Fauber said in an interview. Moody’s also envisions future AI assistants for tasks such as lending and underwriting, he said.

👍 Salesforce Introduces XGen-7B, A Large Language Model With Longer Context Support

The race to release open source generative AI models is heating up. Salesforce has joined the bandwagon by launching XGen-7B, a large language model that supports longer context windows than the available open source LLMs.

The 7B in XGen-7B LLM represents 7 billion parameters. The larger the number of parameters, the bigger the model. Models with larger parameters, such as 13 billion tokens, require high-end CPUs, GPUs, RAM, and storage. But the larger model size helps get an accurate response since it is trained on larger data corpora. So, it’s a tradeoff between size and accuracy.

Elon Musk continues to blame Twitter’s new limitations on AI companies scraping “vast amounts of data” as he announced new “temporary” limits on how many posts people can read.

Now unverified accounts will only be able to see 600 posts per day, and for “new” unverified accounts, just 300 in a day. The limits for verified accounts (presumably whether they’re bought as a part of the Twitter Blue subscription, granted through an organization, or verification Elon forced on people like Stephen King, LeBron James, and anyone else with more than a million followers) still allow reading only a maximum of 6,000 posts per day.

The famous “Terminator” line, “I’ll be back,” may have an entirely different meaning now.

While speaking at an event titled “An Evening With Arnold Schwarzenegger” this week in Los Angeles, the star, 75, claimed that the artificial intelligence world that was predicted in the “Terminator” movies has “become a reality.”
