And welcome back! I don’t share many script fonts in this newsletter—it’s true, I’m very picky when it comes to the genre. For some reason, I tend to find them a bit tacky. But today’s issue features two new script fonts that I couldn’t resist sharing, ones I would actually love to use myself. I hope you enjoy them! Anthony Panie 🇫🇷

Montpellier-based designer Anthony Panie just launched his own independent type foundry. The starting catalogue includes four retail typefaces, of which Paso is probably my favorite. Originally designed for the precision of architectural plans, Paso is a geometric sans-serif well-suited for contemporary interfaces. But make sure to have a look at Hard Nouveau as well, a display typeface with extravagant letterforms and ligatures, and Marthe Mono, a monospaced typeface with plenty of personality.

Unifora from Yep! Type Foundry

Portuguese foundry Yep! Type released Unifora, a massive type family in five widths: Condensed, Narrow, Standard, Semi-Expanded, and Expanded. Each width includes nine weights from Thin to Black, with matching italics and even backslanted styles (retalics). In addition, each width is uniwidth, meaning that characters occupy the same horizontal space across all font styles. This makes Unifora a great pick for animation and UI design. Note that the current version only includes a basic character set—which is why each font style starts at just $5—and by licensing it now, you’ll receive the future update free of charge when it’s released very soon. Don’t sleep on this one!

Pennline Script from The Northern Block

Pennline Script is a beautiful revival of Bulletin, a typeface first cast in the late 1890s by the Keystone Type Foundry in Philadelphia, USA. Designer Tasos Varipatis carefully redrew and rebalanced every glyph to preserve the expressive irregularity of the original design—you can see images of the original source material and read more about the design process on the foundry’s blog. Despite its historical roots, no compromises were made on OpenType features, which include various alternates, ligatures, and eight stylistic sets. Available in a single Regular style, Pennline Script is a powerful tool for designers seeking both aesthetic charm and practical flexibility.

Rotina from Sharp Type

A collaboration between Nuform Type and Sharp Type, Rotina is a neo-grotesque collection in three families. At its core, the standard Rotina family is a versatile and reliable sans-serif, available in eight weights plus matching italics. The second family, Rotina Swash, features beautiful swash uppercase characters and many swash alternates for lowercase as well. Lastly, Rotina Script is a bold, handstyle-inspired family designed to provide emphasis beyond a traditional italic. To top it all off, every font style in the family is also available in a Tight variant—with satisfyingly tight letter spacing—that works beautifully at large sizes.

Aeropa Pan-European from Rosetta Type

Rosetta Type released Aeropa Pan-European (PE), a humanist sans-serif designed to thrive in compact, information-dense settings. The typeface is available in six weights with matching italics, plus as a variable font with two axes of variation (weight and slant). Additionally, the italics share the same width as the uprights, allowing you to easily swap one for the other without causing text to reflow. Complete with support for Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic scripts, Aeropa includes over 450 alternate glyphs that let you customize its appearance—choose between circular or square dots, cursive or constructed forms in Greek, and many more options.

Offgrid Sans by Fons Mans

I stumbled upon Offgrid Sans, a collaboration between Rotterdam-based designer Fons Mans and type designer Nicolas Massi. The design is based on the ever-popular Inter typeface by Rasmus Andersson, but with some subtle differences—most notable are the square punctuation marks and diacritics, which are round in Inter. Offgrid Sans comes in nine weights (without italics) and can be seen in use on the website of Offgrid, Fons Mans’ graphic design studio. The typeface includes several alternates, such as the alternate ‘R’ and ‘G’ that appear in the studio’s wordmark pictured above.

Offgrid Sans is free for both personal and commercial use.

The Keith Sweater is now available from Or Type Foundry. This limited-edition sweater is made from 100% Icelandic wool and features Keith—an unreleased variable pixel typeface.

Logitech launched the MX Master 4 mouse. It includes a new button with haptic feedback that opens a menu with quick actions tailored to the app you have open (Figma, for example). Coming from the Apple Magic Mouse, it’s more comfortable and ergonomic, although it does require a bit of getting used to. But once you’ve found your ideal setup (I made the thumb wheel switch between desktops), there’s no going back. Plus, I can finally use my mouse while charging it 😅

DaVinci by Virgile Flores

DaVinci was recently updated with italic styles, and they were absolutely worth the wait, featuring many swash alternates. “I can’t believe it took me six years to finally complete the full DaVinci family,” says designer Virgile Flores, a NYC-based creative working at the intersection of fashion, art, and music. These influences are visible throughout the typeface, with glyphs flowing gracefully into one another to create dynamic movement.

On several characters, you’ll notice that the serifs touch and connect—sometimes at the top, sometimes at the baseline. Even subtle details reveal careful attention: the dots on the ‘i’ appear slightly oversized in thin weights, then becomes proportionate as the weight increases, adding to DaVinci’s playful character. The typeface comes in seven weights with matching italics, offering a wide range of ligatures and four sets of numerals (proportional, lining, tabular, and oldstyle), making it as functional as it is pleasing to look at.

Innovator Grotesk from Yep! Type Foundry

At first glance, Innovator Grotesk looks just like another grotesque. But it’s got much more under the hood: a special set of icons and UI symbols adjusted in weight and size, currency symbols that were optically adjusted to perfectly align with numerals, and different stylistic sets, including one that improves legibility by making certain letters easier to differentiate. The typeface comes in nine weights with italics and works remarkably well at small sizes. If you’re not convinced yet, the pricing might do it—commercial licenses for companies of up to 5 employees cost only $10 per font style.

Speaker from Formula Type

Speaker is the latest from Formula Type, a type foundry run by Piero Di Biase out of Udine, Italy. Designed by Piero himself with technical support from Alberto Malossi, this retro-futurist typeface evokes dot matrices and flip-dot displays. The family includes three cuts: a Regular weight, its monospaced counterpart, and a Mono Screen cut built on a 7×7 dot grid. Perhaps the best part—the typeface includes 400 symbols and emoticons that are pure joy to look at!

Miro from Overtype Foundry

New foundry alert! Overtype is the new independent type foundry of Inès Davodeau and Tim Vanhille. The website launched with a starting catalogue that includes two retail typefaces: a serif and a sans-serif. My preference goes to the serif, Miro, which combines classic elegance with a raw, expressive edge—featuring subtle breaks and distinctive details that give it personality and depth. Miro is a great choice for long-form text, editorial projects, and striking logotypes.

Yuni Grotesque from TypeMates

Designed by Philipp Neumeyer and released through TypeMate, Yuni Grotesque is the new addition to the Yuni collection, which already includes Yuni Slab. Yuni Grotesque pairs compressed, high-impact shapes with mischievous, functional curves—counters that round as weight increases. It comes in six weights ranging from Hair to Black, with an expressive 18° italic that has real personality, making it a practical choice for bold headlines, branding, and global UI work.

FOSS Serif from Boulevard LAB

FOSS Serif is the first typeface released by FOSS Projects, a new initiative by type foundry Boulevard LAB that currently offers an affordable course on type design. Designed by Samuel Glen Hughes, FOSS Serif comes in a single Regular style, though an italic counterpart is expected soon. The typeface was made open-source to serve as a learning tool—students can study its letterforms, spacing, and structure while modifying and expanding upon it. Additionally, anyone can submit modified or expanded versions to info@foss-projects.com. Selected “remixes” will be included in future open-source releases with full designer credits. We can therefore expect to see some cool derivative works very soon!

FOSS Serif is free for both personal and commercial use.

Crit from Element Type

“Crit is initiated as another workhorse sans, while closely tied to Akzidenz Grotesk, I wanted Crit to look as different from it as possible,” explains Doğukan Karapınar, its principal designer. To achieve this, terminals feature straight corners on one side and flare-like turns on the other. Descenders and ascenders are notably short, almost compressed within the vertical space, creating a tight and solid appearance. Combined with its tall x-height, this keeps text looking compact yet highly legible.

What makes Crit particularly noteworthy is how the counters shift toward squarer forms in bolder weights, maintaining clarity without becoming overly heavy. Otherwise, the design follows the grotesque archetype faithfully. The family spans eight weights from Extralight to Black with matching italics. Additionally, various stylistic sets allow you to modify the typeface’s overall tone, offering three different versions of ‘a’: two-story, single-story, and tailed. You can also choose between square and round punctuation marks. The ligatures are probably the most compelling feature—you can learn more about the designers’ approach to these connections in the detailed design essay.

Rondeau from Domicile Foundry

Designed by Joona Louhi, this high-contrast serif draws inspiration from classic Elzevir typefaces. The family spans seven weights from Thin to Black with matching italics, maintaining remarkable robustness even in its darker weights—avoiding the typical brittleness of such typefaces. Rondeau’s distinctive 21-degree italics feature rational design choices that tie closely to the upright forms rather than following any specific historical model. Due to its high contrast and dense spacing, Rondeau is intended for large sizes, where its refined details can truly shine.

Gap from HAL Typefaces

HAL Gap is a display sans where the keen gesture of slicing and chopping the ends off round characters allows for tight spacing and a sharp appearance. Originally inspired by “Leporello”, Friedrich Poppl’s 1977 design for Berthold, Gap comes in seven individual styles, diverging in width and weight. They range from an extremely thin and compressed XXS to a wide and heavy XXL. All static styles are encased in a gutsy variable font, seamlessly shaping countless instances in between.

Edgar from Frere-Jones Type

Edgar, the long-awaited serif companion to Mallory from Frere-Jones Type, has arrived. Despite a ten-year gap between their releases, the two font families share a common thread: exploring type as autobiography. Edgar’s letterforms capture the easy conversational rhythm of renowned author Edgar Wallace, whose work inspired the design. Tobias Frere-Jones led the project alongside Nina Stössinger, who played a key role in developing Edgar, particularly its italics. “Most proud italic I’ve drawn to date. Been a journey and a joy,” the Swiss designer reflects. And if you enjoy nerding out on type (who doesn't?) the design essay belongs on your reading list.

Algorytm from Interval Type

Interval Type released the Algorytm collection, comprising six type families. The standard Algorytm version makes a bold statement, ideal for larger sizes, while Algorytm Clear is tailored for legibility in extended text. Algorytm Flip is a reverse-contrast companion, Algorytm Soft offers a friendlier take with rounded corners, and a Monospaced version is also available. The standout member of the family, however, is Algorytm Sport—a vibrant inline typeface that will add energy to your designs. The collection includes an abundance of variations, alternates, features, and special characters, making it well-suited for almost any design scenario.

Memoir by Daniel Gremme

Designed by Daniel Gremme, one of the co-founders of Neomatter, a new type foundry offering three-dimensional typefaces and type design services, Memoir is “a free typeface for the nostalgic beholder.” Roman proportions, subtle stroke contrast, and melting joints render it warm and gentle, opening a gate into the past—sometimes blurry, sometimes sharp. Despite including only uppercase characters and basic punctuation, the typeface supports 257 languages of the Latin script. The typeface was recently featured on PAGE Magazine, where you’ll find more visuals and information about the design process (in German).

Almandin from typographies.fr

French designers Laurent Bourcellier and Jonathan Fabreguettes present Almandin, a thoughtfully crafted sans-serif that took nine years to perfect. This collaborative project reflects the designers’ training at École Estienne, resulting in a typeface that balances neutrality with calligraphic influence. In addition, Almandin is uniwidth (also known as multiplexed), meaning that character width remains consistent across all seven weights—ensuring seamless alignment when mixing different weights in the same layout.

Yetson from Luzi Type

Swiss foundry Luzi Type released Yetson, a family that includes both a Serif and a Sans-Serif version. “It’s satisfying for me to observe how seamlessly the French Renaissance Grotesque harmonizes with its sans-serif counterpart” explains designer Luzi Gantenbein. In addition, the two families share the same design foundation, making them perfect companions for use in complex typographic hierarchies. Both subfamilies come in eight weights, ranging from Light to Black, with matching italics.

Tausend from Fontwerk

One of the biggest and hottest releases of the summer, Tausend is an extensive superfamily in the tradition of German grotesques. Designed by Christoph Koeberlin and Gabriel Richter, Tausend includes six families. At its core is the “classic” Tausend family, which also exists as Tausend Plakat—an optical size optimized for larger display applications. Tausend Soft features discreetly rounded corners and is available in two optical sizes as well. Beyond the Stencil family, you’ll find Tausend Shaded, the most interesting subfamily, at least technically speaking. Tausend Shaded offers nine weights with shadows that adapt visually to each weight, and in its variable font version, the shadows adjust dynamically as you increase the font weight. Developing it was “one of the biggest challenges in my professional career,” explains Gabriel Richter.

BAZAAR from Letters from Sweden

Designed by Laurette Colmard, a type designer based in Grenoble, France—who also graduated from École Estienne in Paris, just like the designers of Almandin featured above—BAZAAR draws inspiration from graffiti and street writing. Its letters, varying in height and dancing around rather than sitting on the baseline, are set extremely tight to create a wild and fierce rhythm, particularly striking in all-caps settings. But the best part for me is the set of hand-drawn icons, that are also variable 😍

Martian Grotesk from Evil Martians

Martian Grotesk, the big brother of Martian Mono, was recently made open source. The entire family, which previously sold for over $1,000, includes 63 static styles spanning nine weights (from Thin to Ultra) across seven widths (from Condensed to Ultra Wide). It’s also available as a variable font with two axes (weight and width). With its distinctive character, Martian Grotesk includes features that make it an excellent choice for use on the web. For instance, the typeface’s vertical metrics guarantee equal space above and below text, enabling text labels to be positioned evenly on buttons. Martian Grotesk can be downloaded from GitHub and the Evil Martians website.

Mov Variable from Studio Feixen

Studio Feixen released Mov Variable, a cutting-edge typeface that pushes the boundaries of what variable fonts can achieve. Every letter is a small experiment, with its own rules, and comes with at least eight alternates. But where the fun lies is in the variable font, that includes two animation axes that work together to transform the letterforms in real-time. Certain letters, or icons, are even designed to allow continuous motions, like a clock hand movement, that can be repeated endlessly. But in case the variable font feels a bit intimidating, the typeface also comes in four static cuts.

Uai UI from Naipe Foundry

The latest from Naipe Foundry, an independent foundry based in Rio de Janeiro, is a sans-serif designed for use in modern user interfaces. As such, the typeface is uniwidth (also known as multiplexed) meaning that all characters maintain the same width across all font styles—allowing you to change weights without causing text to reflow. Uai UI comes in two subfamilies, one of them specifically designed for use on dark mode interfaces, compensating for the fact that light text appears thicker than it is when displayed on dark backgrounds. With these two families, Uai UI allows to maintain consistent visual appearance and readability whether it’s being used in light mode or dark mode, or even in both—for example, on websites that allow users to switch the background color.

The Sita Collection from Order Type Foundry

Brooklyn-based Order Type Foundry released Sita, a superfamily designed by Edouard Berard. Rooted in British typographic history, the collection includes two families: a Scotch Roman-inspired Serif, and a British grotesque-influenced Sans. The two families share a unified skeleton while maintaining distinct voices, allowing for harmonious yet contrasting pairings between their different styles. Both Sita Sans and Sita Serif come in four weights, from Regular to Black, with matching italics.

Sancy from Formagari

Formagari released Sancy, a versatile typeface collection by Emmanuel Besse featuring both Sans and Slab variants. Inspired by a wooden panel from the French town of Besse (yes, same name as the designer!) both families share semi-condensed proportions and low contrast reminiscent of street signage. I have to admit, my favorite of the two is the Slab Serif, offering particular elegance in lighter weights and friendly reliability in bolder styles. The narrow proportions make Sancy exceptionally space-efficient for editorial work while maintaining enough character for distinctive branding applications. Each family offers seven weights, from Light to Black, with matching italics.

TikTok Sans by Grilli Type

TikTok Sans was added to Google Fonts. Commissioned by TikTok for use across its platform, the typeface was designed by Grilli Type in collaboration with Contrast Foundry and Type Network. The version available freely on Google Fonts does not appear to be the same as the one that was delivered to TikTok, as its dark mode axis was removed. On the bright side, the open-source version is an expanded version from the original, with the addition of a width axis, making it an extensive family available as a variable font with four axes (Optical Size, Width, Weight, and Slant). It also offers significant advantages, for example, the typeface remains crisp and readable even at tiny sizes, having been crafted for use on modern smartphone and tablet screens.

Note: the fonts on the GitHub repository are not compiled, and only the TTFs are available to download from Google Fonts. For use on the web, it’s best to embed the fonts from Google Fonts (or compile the WOFF2 font files yourself).

Antiphony from QueerType

Antiphony is the debut retail release from QueerType, the new independent foundry of Detroit-based Betsy Schuster. Conceived as the designer’s graduation project from TypeMedia, this expressive typeface pushes boundaries with both forward and reverse italics sitting at an extreme angle of 45º—making it ideal for setting type in either direction. The fluid design works beautifully on curved paths, and allows for circular typesetting as well. Currently in V0.1, Antiphony is available from Future Fonts in two styles (Display Light Italic and Display Light ContraItalic) but the final family will expand to include bold and heading styles.

Soft Text by Kyle Letendre

Soft Text is a gentle, easy-to-read typeface designed by Kyle Letendre for small-size applications. The concept emerged from the designer’s wish to use an approachable and friendly typeface in instructional materials for his typography workshop students. Currently in its V0.1 release, Soft Text includes full Latin-Extended language support, small caps, both lining and old-style figures, plus subtle ligatures that enhance text flow. Letendre plans to expand the family with bold and italic styles, along with additional decorative flourishes. Soft Text is currently available from Future Fonts starting at just US$35, with all future updates at no extra cost.

Sichem by Anne-Dauphine Borione

Available from Blaze Type’s growing collection of experimental designs, Sichem is a display serif from the mind of Anne-Dauphine Borione, or Ando pour les intimes. Inspired by hot air balloons, the typeface embodies their essence and weightlessness with an airy, silky design that features spacious counters and extremely thin strokes. Sichem comes in a single font style for now, although a multitude of alternates are included. If you need, you could even use its various uppercase alternates to create a sense of hierarchy in your design, and enhance the overall composition.

Tiny Grotesk from Tiny Type Co.

Despite its name, there’s nothing tiny about this typeface’s capabilities. Designer Robin Mientjes has crafted 12 font styles divided into three distinct widths, with each width corresponding to a different optical size, to cover an impressive range of applications. The narrow styles excel in footnotes, sidenotes, and other space-constrained contexts. The regular width serves as a versatile sans serif, optimized for screen display between 12px and 24px. And for commanding presence, the wide styles can scale as large as your design demands. “But nobody’s gonna stop you if you mix things up.”

Adelphe by Eugénie Bidaut

Adelphe is an elegant and quirky serif that supports the standard character set of the Queer Unicode Initiative (QUNI). The typeface includes three subfamilies, each offering a different approach to inclusive writing in French. Adelphe Germinal uses the midpoint to bridge masculine and feminine forms, while Adelphe Floréal employs subscript diacritics (accents placed under letters). Finally, Adelphe Fructidor takes a different route with an alternative ‘e’ and specialized ligatures. Each subfamily comes in three weights—Regular, Semi Bold, and Bold—with matching italics.

Edict Display from Schick Toikka

Edict is Schick Toikka’s interpretation of quintessential seventeenth-century French typography. The visuals speak for themselves — this is a beautiful and elegant typeface with a mesmerizing italic companion. Both the roman and italic styles feature alternates and decorative ligatures. Additionally, the italic includes a complete set of optional swash capitals, as well as terminal forms for all lowercase letters. Designed for large display sizes, Edict is available in five weights and as a variable font with a weight axis.

Indiana from 205TF

Designed by Malou Verlomme, Indiana is a typeface built upon seemingly irreconcilable constraints. Its letterforms are defined by bold geometric shapes and compact proportions, making it a natural choice for headlines and logotypes. Additionally, its short ascenders and descenders give text a dense and impactful presence on the page. Indiana is available in six weights, ranging from Thin to Black, with matching italics. Make sure to check its extensive range of stylistic alternates and OpenType features!

SuperX Serif from NaN

NaN’s latest release is a display serif with a disproportionately big x-height. The typeface is available in eight weights with matching italics, and includes native support for both Latin and Arabic scripts. A true collaborative effort, the SuperX project, which also includes a sans-serif version, involved contributions from more than eight team members. The Serif and Sans Serif families make a contrasting but matching pair, ideal to create impactful headlines with tight line spacing. But “be prepared for other optical sizes” 😏

Host Grotesk from Element Type

If Host Grotesk looks familiar, it’s because the design is based on Jonny Pinhorn’s ever-popular Poppins typeface. Although Poppins’ essence remains visible, most letters were reworked and modified to fit within duplexed proportions. You understood right, this makes Host Grotesk a uniwidth typeface, meaning that its characters maintain the exact same width across all weights and font styles. This is particularly useful for use on the web, as it allows for smooth transitions between its font weights without disrupting your layouts. Font people, rejoice! There’s a cool new type foundry on the block. Called Flight Mode, it is a one-person foundry run by designer Alex Slobzheninov, who is also the founder of Contemporary Type, an Instagram account you probably know given its massive following. Along with the launch of his independent foundry, Alex is introducing a curated font shop under the same name, Contemporary Type.

As for Prefere, our members’ favourite from the Flight Mode catalogue, it’s definitely not your ordinary typeface. The design emerged from aligning elements along an imaginary horizontal line, resulting in flat counters and brutal geometry. Combined with its tight spacing, Prefere provides the perfect recipe for attention-grabbing headlines, posters, and websites. It comes in five weights, from Light to Heavy, with corresponding italics. There is also a variable font, which is included in the download pack.

States from Fatype

States is a work-in-progress typeface consisting of two subfamilies: States Grotesque and States Rounded. Each family is currently available in a single style (Medium). States Rounded, perhaps the more distinctive of the two, comes with a wide range of alternate characters, including crossbar-free capital letters (A, E, and G). The variable font is also pretty cool — it includes both subfamilies connected through a “Pressure” axis.

Magic from HAL Typefaces

Magic is a confident and dynamic geometric sans-serif. The collection includes three subfamilies, each with a different x-height: Low, Mid, and High. Each subfamily brings its own distinct flavour and contains six weights plus corresponding obliques. All font styles are included in the variable font, which allows for graceful x-height animations.

Gregory Poster from TypeMates

The latest release from our friends at TypeMates is a display typeface designed by Jakob Runge in collaboration with George Triantafyllakos and Seryozha Rasskazov. Blending sharp angles with gentle curves, Gregory Poster is an intriguing flared serif with a distinctive personality. No compromises were made on language support, with Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, and Vietnamese available. Packed with OpenType features, Gregory Poster comes in seven weights, with a charming italic. Pure beauty!

Ginestra by &Rosàs

An initiative from his coworkers at &Rosàs, in collaboration with type designer Iñigo Jerez from Extra Type, Ginestra pays tribute to Nacho Ginestra, the agency’s Creative Director, who tragically passed away in February 2022. “Nacho liked the idea that a typeface, in addition to characters, had pictograms. That is why we added 23 pictograms with some of his most characteristic faces and reactions.” You can download and use the Black weight for free, but not in commercial projects.

Barcelona-based Emtype Foundry brings us Micrograph, a precise and distinctive sans-serif typeface. With features like rectangular terminals and square punctuation signs, the typeface maintains a neutral and technical tone. But notice how punctuation marks and diacritics are slightly oversized in the lighter weights, and gradually normalize as the weight increases. This gives Micrograph a subtle personality that sets it apart without compromising legibility in smaller text. The Business collection from Pizza Typefaces is an interesting superfamily that can serve many purposes. It includes three subfamilies, the most recent being Business Serif, a not-so-serious serif in two optical sizes (Text and Display). Then comes Business Blooming, a rather experimental but fanciful script typeface. Its perfect companion, Business Didot, is a confident and contemporary interpretation of the Didot model, which is also available in two optical sizes (Text and Display).

Exat from Hot Type

Hot Type published Exat, their most ambitious release to date. Named after EXAT 51, a prolific and pioneering group of Croatian architects and artists, the typeface comes in three widths (Condensed, Standard, and Wide) each including seven weights. Exat supports Latin and Cyrillic, and includes features and stylistic sets inspired by local Croatian graphic design quirks, such as modified thin accents. Pure bliss.

Base Pixel by Clément Cases

Base Pixel was created by Clément Cases in collaboration with Base (but not the design studio we all know). So what the hell is Base? Yes, good question. Base is an open-source crypto platform developed by Coinbase. It’s designed for developers to build “onchain apps” or in other words, applications on its blockchain network. Base Pixel, the typeface, is a variable font that goes from a serif inspired by Roman inscriptions to a highly pixelated design. And you can “mint it” for a limited time.

Hedvig Letters by Kanon Foundry

Sweden’s Kanon Foundry was tasked with creating a font family for Hedvig, a digital insurance company. To reflect the brand philosophy, which is “to embrace the mistakes we make as humans”, it was decided to leave some imperfections in the typeface instead of visually correcting them. The outcome, Hedvig Letters, consists of three font styles that are designed to work together. As for the serif styles, Hedvig Letters Big is meant for the big print, and Hedvig Letters Small for the finer applications. Then comes the workhorse sans-serif style, Hedvig Letters Standard. You can download the fonts from GitHub, or use them via Google Fonts.

STK Bureau Serif

Bureau Serif from Smuss Type Kiosk

Based in Oslo, Norway, Smuss Type Kiosk is run by William Stormdal and Jørgen Brynhildsvoll. The creative duo introduced the type foundry in 2022, at the same time as they launched their graphic design practice, Smuss Studio, showing their early dedication to typography. Although there are many gems available from their catalogue, Bureau Serif is our members’ favourite. Bureau Serif started as an attempt to design a serif typeface based on the skeleton of Bureau Sans. In the process, Bureau Serif has inherited the proportions of its sans-serif predecessor, which contribute to its unique texture. Some of its distinctive features — such as its sharp flags, and squared dots — were also borrowed from Bureau Sans. Available in five weights with italics, Bureau Serif is a true workhorse with a bold personality. And since the influence of the sans-serif version is visible in the serif, this makes for a great font pairing right out of the box.

Pivot Grotesk from Nouvelle Noire

Originally created as a custom typeface for the identity of Theater Basel in 2020, Pivot Grotesk has been refined and expanded and is now available as a retail font. Designed by Anton Studer, Pivot Grotesk brings together two opposing aesthetics. On one hand, there are the tapered, almost triangular strokes. On the other hand, there are the curved, spiral shapes, most notable in the dynamic ‘&’ and the signature ‘a’. Pivot Grotesk comes in eight weights (from Thin to Black) with matching italics.

Eroticon from Suitcase Type Foundry

Prague-based Suitcase Type Foundry is behind this high-contrast serif typeface that caught my attention. The family includes two font styles. First, the Regular style, with its condensed proportions, is a great pick for titles and headings. Second, the Glamour style, with its wide alternations of rounded characters and extensive swashes, has a dynamic nature and unmistakable character that will do wonders in logotypes. Both styles are uppercase only, but they come with support for Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic scripts.

Resonay Text from TypeMates

Resonay Text is the new little brother of Resonay Display. Awarded by the TDC, Resonay Display is a layer typeface — you can combine its Basic and Cover styles for chromatic effect — or simply use its Solid style which merges the two into one. Yet, Resonay Text stands strong on its own merits. It’s a dynamic text typeface with generous curves, enriched with an expressive italic, and more than 200 ligatures. In addition, every upright letter comes with at least two swashes: an initial swash for when the letter is placed at the beginning of a word, and a final swash for when the letter is placed at the end of a word. Italic capitals also come with initial swashes as standard.

Experimental Release

Narri by Elsa Drevous

I’m not sure you could qualify this one as “experimental” but since today’s issue is all about lively and dynamic typefaces, Narri definitely deserves a spot in it. This intriguing and unusual design is inspired by the dancing shapes of flames — which makes it perfectly fitting that Blaze Type published it. With its organic calligraphic shapes, Narri is a playful typeface meant for display use. You could also use its glyphs on their own, as decorative letters for example, as they work great for logos and branding.

I like this sleek Kim Keychain from German type foundry Kimera. It comes with a wire cable ring that can hold a document together (like the Kimera Release Notes 1.00).

Hey, it’s Noemi. Great to have you here! Today’s issue is a bit different. Instead of introducing a selection of new typefaces like I normally do, I made a compilation of uniwidth typefaces that were released over the past few years, and of which I like the design. Now, I am not talking about monospaced typefaces here, so just to make sure we’re talking about the same thing: uniwidth typefaces (also called “equal-width”, “duplexed”, or “multiplexed” typefaces) are proportional typefaces, but their characters maintain the exact same width across all weights and font styles, ensuring no impact on line length or text flow when swapping, for example, the Light weight for the Black weight. These typefaces are therefore perfect for digital applications, such as interface and app design. I hope this selection provides inspiration for your next project!

Paradise from Altiplano

Gnarly by Formerly Known

Released by Formely Known, a design studio based in Los Angeles, Gnarly is a grotesque design featuring exaggerated ink traps and extended terminals. However, the typeface includes a roster of alternates — like a single-storey ‘a’ and ‘g’ — that can tone down the design if needed. Gnarly comes in five weights, from Light to Black, with matching italics. It is also available as a variable font.

Selecta by Maxitype

Selecta is a highly legible sans-serif designed by Daniel Haettenschwiller. The typeface comes in six weights, ranging from Thin to Black, with Italics plus as a variable font. It includes numerous OpenType features, such as alternate characters, thin punctuation signs, and a wide range of symbols. The uniwidth spacing across all its styles, but also across its large range of icons, makes it perfect for interface and app design.

Available in Condensed and Narrow widths for use where space is limited.

Dorival UI by Blackletra Type Foundry

Dorival UI is the latest from Blackletra Type Foundry, a small foundry based in São Paulo, Brazil. Loosely inspired by the engineered geometry of Linotype’s DIN 1451, this family balances a strict structure with subtle humanistic traits, like the diagonal terminals. Although it was designed with interfaces in mind, Dorival UI comes in three widths (Condensed, Narrow, and Regular) making it a versatile type family.

Nicéphore from Apex Type Foundry

Nicéphore is a striking display typeface designed by Alex Chavot. With unobtrusive diacritics and short ascenders and descenders, this typeface is your secret weapon for creating tight line spacing and dense page texture. The family comes in six weights (from Thin to Heavy) but without italics. However, it is packed with twelve stylistic sets and alternates to provide you with more options.

Chris Silverman 🇺🇸

A longtime Fresh Fonts member, Chris Silverman is a man of many talents. Based in Hudson Valley, New York, Chris works as a designer, illustrator, artist, and web developer. He also runs a blog called Shortform, where he shares his thoughts, projects, and inspiration. Recently redesigned, the blog is now typeset in MD Nichrome (offered to Fresh Fonts members in September) paired with MD Lórien for body text — one of the best font pairings I’ve seen in a while.

Chris is also known for pushing the boundaries of the simple Notes app. Since 2021, he has been making a different drawing every day in his iPhone’s Notes app. Despite the constraints of drawing in an app designed for note taking, he creates original art in an impressive variety of styles.
