With spring officially here, it’s the perfect time to step outside, breathe in the fresh air, and explore everything our county has to offer.

I recently wandered Overton (spoiler: it was wonderful!), and it got me thinking—there’s always something new to discover, even in places we think we know well. Walking Through History (and Having Coffee) in Charming Overton

Last week, I ventured to the charming village of Overton, not far from Basingstoke, to tackle the "Overton in Jane Austen’s Time" trail—a delightful 2.5-mile circular walk.

My journey kicked off at the Jane Austen Trails information board right in the village centre.

Start at this point: qualify.revives.goofy

The route meandered gently along roads and leafy footpaths, passing spots that Jane Austen and her family would have recognised immediately. A highlight was visiting St Nicholas Church, where Jane's father served as rector. Not only was Jane christened there back in 1776, but her brother James is also buried in the peaceful churchyard.

Once back in the village, I leisurely explored Overton’s quaint shops, eventually stopping at Stanley’s for a well-deserved hot drink and snack. The place was buzzing, clearly the village hotspot for coffee and a good catch-up.

Even if you aren’t a devoted Jane Austen fan, I'd definitely recommend this walk. It's a wonderful way to enjoy the spring weather, take in some historical sights, and soak up the friendly atmosphere of Overton.

Tip: Some of the roads don’t have pavements, so please take care.

Look out for the River Test - it was so beautiful. The water is so clear!

Other Trails to Explore

If you’re after a longer route, the Overton to Steventon Trail (9 miles) takes you all the way to Austen’s birthplace, with a cycling version (12 miles) for those on two wheels. There’s also a 6.5-mile route through Ashe and Deane, exploring more of the surrounding countryside.

Roydon Woods nature reserve, located in Brockenhurst within the New Forest, is a wonderful spot. Bluebells generally bloom in the UK from mid-April to early May, depending on the weather, so remember to mark a date in your diary.

Hi there Hampshire,

It’s been a few weeks—sorry about that. Things are back to normal now, and I have plenty to share.

If you have kids, you’ll know it’s half-term (and you might be wondering how to fill the time). Don’t worry, I’ve got some last-minute ideas to keep them entertained. And if you don’t have kids? Well, you might want to plan your escape from the crowds.

🥷 Shout-out to Ninja Warrior in Southampton - we went over the weekend, and the kids absolutely loved it. Think giant obstacle courses and plenty of ways to burn off energy. If you need a fun way to wear them out (or fancy testing your own ninja skills), it’s well worth a visit.

One of the UK’s Oldest Tide Mills: A Waterfront Walk

Eling Tide Mill is one of the UK’s last working tide mills, located on the edge of the New Forest. Although the mill is currently waiting for repairs and not milling, it remains a great place to visit.

There is a great waterfront walk, a crabbing spot, a play area, and a café with views of the boats in the marina. It is dog-friendly, pushchair-friendly, and has a free car park (if arriving from the east, you will need to pay a £1 toll, which is refunded if you visit the mill).

Things to Do

• Visit the Mill and Discovery Room – Learn about tide-powered milling and explore interactive exhibits. The mill is open on weekends from 11am to 4pm.

• Go Crabbing from the Toll Bridge – Bring a crabbing line and try catching some shoreline wildlife.

• Walk the Easy Loop – A 1.5km flat path with boardwalks and bridges, passing the mill pond and wetlands.

• Visit the Play Area – A great spot for children located near the shoreline.

• Visit the Mill Café – Open Wednesday to Sunday from 9:30am to 4pm, serving drinks and snacks.

Getting There

• Parking: Free car park at SO40 9HB (W3W: rescue/vibe/forgot). A £1 toll applies when arriving from the east but is refunded if visiting the mill.

• Public Transport: Totton train station is a 10-minute walk away. Bluestar Bus 6 or 8 stops at Batts Corner.

Eling Tide Mill is a great spot for a peaceful walk, a family outing, or just a coffee by the water. Even though the mill is not currently producing flour, there is plenty to see and do.

Geocaching: A Treasure Hunt in Hampshire

Ever wanted to go on a real-life treasure hunt? That’s exactly what geocaching is! It’s a free outdoor adventure where you use a GPS-enabled device (or just your phone) to find hidden containers - called geocaches - tucked away in parks, forests, and countryside spots.

There are hundreds of geocaches hidden across Hampshire, including at Royal Victoria Country Park, River Hamble Country Park, Queen Elizabeth Country Park, and Titchfield Haven. When you find a cache, you can sign the logbook and, if it’s big enough, swap a small item (like a toy or keyring) for something left by another explorer.

I’ve done it in the New Forest before—found a little box and left a toy behind for the next person - it was great fun!

How to Get Started

1. Download the Geocaching app (or visit Geocaching.com).
2. Choose a cache nearby and navigate to the coordinates.
3. Hunt for the hidden treasure! It could be in a tree, under a bench, or even disguised as a rock.
4. Sign the logbook and, if it’s a tradable cache, swap an item.
5. Put it back exactly where you found it for the next adventurer!

Want to Hide Your Own?

You can even place your own cache, but there are a few rules:
✅ Get the landowner’s permission.
✅ Clearly label the container and make sure it’s safe for kids.
✅ Don’t bury caches or place them in animal homes.
✅ No food, drinks, or anything unsafe inside the box.

Ruins, Ford, and a Scenic Stroll

Known locally as ‘King John’s Castle,’ this historic site sits in a peaceful setting beside the Basingstoke Canal. Built between 1207 and 1214, the castle has witnessed key historical moments, including the signing of the Magna Carta, a dramatic French siege, and even the imprisonment of a Scottish King. It later became the property of the de Montfort family during a period of revolt, making it a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts.

Open daily from 09:00 to 17:00*, the castle is free to visit and features interpretation boards that provide insight into its intriguing past.

Want to Make It a Walk? Here’s How:

1. Start at Odiham Wharf: From the car park, head towards the canal and turn right onto the towpath.

2. Follow the Towpath: Walk under the bridge and continue with the canal on your left. Pass two bridges before reaching the picturesque Warnborough Lift Bridge with its white railings.

3. Explore King John’s Castle: Continue past the bridge to the castle ruins, marked by a green sign. Take your time exploring the free-to-enter site and its historical displays.

4. Optional Ford Detour: After the castle, look for a yellow footpath marker leading across a grassy space to Tunnel Lane. Enjoy the ford before retracing your steps to the lift bridge.

5. Return Path Options:

   • Towpath Return (Recommended in Winter): Retrace your route along the towpath for a smooth and easy walk back.

   • Circular Route (Dry Months): From the lift bridge, cross the road bridge and follow the footpath along the opposite side of the canal. Pass through fields that were once part of the castle’s deer park and rejoin Colt Hill near the Waterwitch.

Highlights Along the Walk

• Watch ducks and boats glide along the canal.

• Visit the shallow ford at Tunnel Lane, where kids can splash in their wellies.

• Relax at The Waterwitch pub, a canalside gem with a lovely garden at the start and end of the walk.

Look What’s Making a Splash at Winchester Cathedral!

Ready for an oceanic adventure without getting your feet wet? From January 22nd to February 26th, 2025, Winchester Cathedral’s nave will transform into an underwater wonderland featuring three gigantic sperm whale sculptures by renowned artist Tessa Campbell Fraser.

Winchester’s Sunset Walk: A Stroll with Views and Stories

There’s something about a sunset that makes any view feel a little more special, and Winchester’s Sunset Walk is no exception. This 1¼-mile circular route takes you through some of the city’s most picturesque and historic spots, offering a perfect way to soak in the charm of this ancient city.

Highlights of the Walk

• Broadway Beginnings: The walk starts on the Broadway, once a Roman thoroughfare, where the bronze statue of King Alfred the Great stands tall. Erected in 1901, it honours the king’s role in restoring Winchester’s prominence.

• St Giles Hill: After a steady climb, you’ll reach the wide green at the top of St Giles Hill, where the view over Winchester is spectacular. With landmarks like the Cathedral and Wolvesey Castle in sight, the scene becomes even more magical as the sun sets. This hill was once the site of the famous St Giles Fair, a medieval trade hub.

• The Weirs and Riverside Path: Following the River Itchen, this peaceful stretch is a delight for wildlife watchers—keep an eye out for otters at dusk! Along the way, the Chesil Rectory, dating back to 1450, adds a touch of Tudor charm.

• Abbey Gardens: The walk ends here in a quiet oasis where the remains of Nunnaminster Abbey can still be seen. The scented garden, designed for visually impaired visitors, is a lovely finishing touch.

When to Visit

This time of year is a good choice for a sunset walk. With the sun setting earlier, you can enjoy the golden hour without waiting too long. On clear days, the view from St Giles Hill is especially stunning.

If you can’t make it now, it’s a walk worth bookmarking for later in the year. Autumn skies and early evening light offer a different kind of beauty, making this a trail to enjoy across the seasons.

• Accessibility: The route includes steps, particularly up St Giles Hill, and may not be suitable for wheelchair users or those who find inclines challenging.

It can be a slower, quieter month, and honestly, there’s something to be said for that. It’s the perfect time for cosy nights in, hearty food, and long walks where you can feel outdoorsy before retreating back to the warmth of home.

January always feels like the perfect time to dream big and set yourself a challenge. Whether it’s getting fitter, trying something completely new, or just having a bit of fun, there’s no shortage of adventures in Hampshire to dive into this year. Here are a few ideas that have caught my eye (and made me wonder if I should dust off my trainers):

• Run your heart out: The 10th anniversary of the ABP Southampton Marathon is coming up on 6 April 2025. From a 5K to a full marathon (or a fun run if, like me, you prefer a more leisurely pace). And if October feels more like your style, there’s the iconic Great South Run in Portsmouth to aim for too!

• Reach for the sky: Imagine abseiling down the 100-metre Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth—it’s definitely one for the bucket list! Or, if you prefer your heights with a side of history, climb the spiral staircase of Winchester Cathedral’s tower for breathtaking views over the city.

• Thrill-seekers unite: Paultons Park’s big seven rollercoasters are waiting for you, alongside their new Ghostly Manor attraction opening in May. And if rollercoasters aren’t your thing, why not bounce through the Inflatable 5K obstacle course in Southampton this July?

• Get outside and move: There’s something magical about cycling through the New Forest—with over 100 miles of off-road routes. Or if you’re after a real endurance test, the 100km South Downs Way hike or bike ride promises incredible views to reward your efforts.

I can’t quite believe that Christmas is this Wednesday! It feels like it’s come around so quickly this year. Whatever you’re up to, I hope you have a magical time filled with love, laughter, and maybe a few mince pies.

While there aren’t as many specific events during this period (except for Christmas, of course—because it doesn’t get much more eventful than that!), Hampshire still has plenty of ways to make the days after Boxing Day feel special.

Hello Tuesday.

It’s full-on chaos here as I try to cram in as much as possible before the kids finish school on Friday. There seems to be something happening at school every day this week (not that I’m complaining—it’s all very festive!). I’ve got a few last-minute gifts to grab, but thankfully, I’m nearly there.

This Friday, I’m heading to The Royal Marines School of Music - The Christmas Concert in Portsmouth, and it looks like there are still a few tickets left.

Next week, I’m looking forward to slowing down a bit and catching up with family. Aside from visiting some favourite spots around Hampshire, we’ve got some cinema time planned—Moana 2 and Wicked are both on the list. I’ll take popcorn over wrapping paper any day!

Visit a 12th-Century Castle for Free - It’s Just a Short Walk From Winchester City Centre

If you haven’t explored Wolvesey Castle, it’s time to add it to your list—and the best part? It’s free! Located just a short stroll from Winchester’s city centre, this historical site offers a fascinating glimpse into the medieval past while being a tranquil spot to enjoy the fresh Hampshire air.

Wolvesey Castle was the principal residence of the powerful Bishops of Winchester during the Middle Ages. Constructed in the 12th century by Henry of Blois, this fortified palace played a pivotal role in the drama of The Anarchy, a civil war that rocked England in the 12th century.

Though much of the castle lies in ruin today, its fifteenth-century chapel survives as part of the adjacent Wolvesey Palace, the current home of the Bishop of Winchester. You might even spot the Bishop—don’t forget to wave!

But the story doesn’t stop there. The site itself, an eyot on the River Itchen known as Wulveseye or "Wulf’s Island," has a much older history. Archaeological finds suggest there were Roman-era buildings here, and long before the castle, Æthelwold of Winchester—a 10th-century Bishop—built a residence on the site.

Plan Your Visit This Holiday Season

Over the festive season, Wolvesey Castle makes a perfect addition to a Winchester walking tour. Why not combine your visit with a scenic stroll along the River Itchen? Start at the City Bridge opposite the historic Winchester City Mill, and follow the path along the river, looping back toward Winchester Cathedral. Whether you begin or end your journey at Wolvesey Castle, it’s a peaceful and picturesque route to soak in Winchester’s charm.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is an incredible place to visit, but I often hear that it’s too expensive for families or regular trips. Thankfully, there’s a way to make it more affordable!

A standard annual pass for two adults usually costs £102 (£92 if booked in advance), but Virgin Experiences is currently offering some great deals, bringing the price down to just £75.20 for two passes—that’s only £37.60 per person, which is almost the same price for a ticket for seeing one the attractions just for one day. Christmas is still in full swing across Hampshire, but what a weekend it’s been! With the storm sweeping through, I hope you managed to stay safe and cosy indoors—or at least avoided chasing down stray decorations in the wind.

Now that the skies have calmed, the festive events calendar is as busy as Santa’s workshop on Christmas Eve.

Southampton’s Secret Underground: I Had No Idea This Even Existed!

I used to live in Southampton, and I had no idea medieval vaults were beneath the city streets! Yesterday evening, I went on the Hidden Southampton Walking Tour, which completely blew me away. Who knew there was so much history tucked under our feet?

Led by the incredibly charismatic Nigel from SEE Southampton, this two-hour tour was a journey through time. Nigel’s storytelling was brilliant—he has the keys to the city (literally!) and opened up the doors to secret medieval wine vaults, some hidden under modern flats and council houses.

I always knew Southampton had a rich history, but now I have a newfound appreciation for it. In places I once took for granted, I've discovered fascinating stories—from the Kings and Queens to the thriving wine and wool trade that made the city famous.

The tour wasn’t just fascinating; it was fun. Nigel’s passion for the city is infectious, and his knowledge is vast but never overwhelming. He shared everything from ancient legends to Henry II's massive impact on the city. By the end, I couldn’t believe how much I’d learned.

This experience sells out regularly with Experience Hampshire, and it’s easy to see why. If you’re a history buff or just curious about what lies beneath Southampton’s streets, I highly recommend booking yourself a spot. 249 Years of Wit and Romance

This Monday marks exactly 249 years since that snowy December night in 1775 when she arrived in Steventon, giving the world one of its most beloved authors. With her 250th anniversary just around the corner in 2025, the celebrations are already shaping up to be spectacular! Whether you’re a lifelong fan or just curious about her world of regency romance and razor-sharp wit, there’s so much to look forward to—especially at Jane Austen’s House in Chawton.

The celebrations kick off in January with a Pride and Prejudice Festival (tickets are already on sale!) featuring themed tours, pop-up talks, and a Pride and Prejudice trail through the house. There’s even a performance blending Austen’s words with Carl Davis’s iconic music—pure magic! And if you can’t make it in person, virtual talks and tours mean fans across the globe can join in.

But that’s just the start. Throughout the year, there will be festivals dedicated to her other works, like Sense & Sensibility in May and Emma in July. Expect everything from candlelit tours and poetry readings to dress-up days and guided walks. December will wrap things up with a cosy Birthday Festival, complete with Georgian decorations, festive treats, and celebrations for Jane’s big 250th on the 16th.

Step Back in Time This December at Butser Ancient Farm!

Located in Waterlooville, Butser Ancient Farm is a treasure trove of history and archaeology. This not-for-profit Community Interest Company is more than just a farm—it’s a living laboratory where ancient building techniques and ways of life are brought back to life through pioneering experiments. Founded in 1972, it has become a world-renowned hub for experimental archaeology and a favourite for history buffs, schoolchildren, and families alike.

While the farm is closed to the public during winter (November to March) except for educational visits and special events, December offers magical opportunities to explore its wonders.

Hello Hampshire,

What a weekend we’ve had! The storm made its presence known, but we managed to squeeze in a visit to Winchester Christmas Market. It was a bit wet and windy, but still lovely – hopefully, we’ll get a chance to visit again on a brighter day.

Plus, I’ll share highlights from my trip to Burley, a recent stop for some fantastic fish and chips, and more. Let’s get started!

Cake, Witchcraft, and Winter Charm in Burley

Last week, I finally made it to Burley in the New Forest after mentioning it in the newsletter, and I’m so glad I did. The snow combined with sunshine made it look picture-perfect. We parked at a pay-and-display car park and wandered around, although I later realised we could have parked at the Old Farmhouse Restaurant & Tea Rooms for free—lesson learned!

We treated ourselves to some cake and a hot drink there, and it was worth the stop. It’s clearly a popular spot because when we arrived, all the tables were full, but we only had to wait about five minutes for one to free up. The food and atmosphere were lovely, so I can see why it’s so busy.

Afterwards, we explored the village, which has a fascinating connection to witchcraft. Back in the 1950s, a white witch named Sybil Leek lived there. She became famous for wandering around in a long black cloak with her pet jackdaw on her shoulder, but the locals weren’t so keen on her, and she eventually moved to the USA. Nowadays, the village leans into quirky history with shops selling witchcraft-related items alongside other charming spots like a fantastic fudge shop and more cafés.

If you fancy combining a visit to Burley with a walk, I’d highly recommend checking out Rob’s Hampshire Pub Walks on YouTube. He has a great 5-mile circular route starting and ending in the village (you can watch it here).

It’s such a lovely place to explore, and I’d definitely go back—hopefully without snow next time!

This is Harting Down, right on the Hampshire and West Sussex border. Managed by the National Trust, it’s one of the largest areas of ancient chalk downland – perfect for a day immersed in nature.

The views are breathtaking, stretching across the Weald to the north and even as far as the Isle of Wight to the south.

You can wander along the South Downs Way or explore quiet valleys bursting with wildflowers, orchids, butterflies, and birds.

History buffs, take note! Harting Down is steeped in history, boasting an Iron Age hill fort, cross-ridge dykes, and remnants of a Napoleonic telegraph station on Beacon Hill.

With peaceful walks, stunning landscapes, and abundant wildlife, Harting Down offers a brilliant spot for a weekend adventure.

A Place to Eat: JHenry’s Fish and Chips

If you’re a fan of proper fish and chips (who isn’t?), you need to know about JHenry’s in Hedge End. This family-run gem has been serving up crispy, golden perfection since 1988, and it’s no wonder it’s become a local institution. With 11 family members working together, the shop is as much about community as it is about food.
