New West is home to Canada’s first Indigenous soda brand

Nadine Jopson is “the woman behind the bubbles” of Heartberry Soda. Heartberrysoda.com

Wunderkind Nadine Jopson already has an impressive resume—and now she’s adding craft soda entrepreneur to the list.

“I’m a Plains Cree Indigenous woman and a proud member of the Alexander Cree Nation,” she explains on the Heartberry Soda blog, adding that her desire to explore craft soda brewing began during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I started participating in hide-tanning classes using natural methods of brain, mineral, and bark tanning. That sparked my interest in using plants for other purposes. As I explored foraging and reconnected with my traditional practices, I was inspired to bring these plant-based medicines into soda recipes, honouring the flavours and healing properties of native plants.”

Heartberry Soda will have its soft launch this weekend at Another Beer Co. At the same time, Another Beer Co. is having its fifth anniversary party. Be sure to visit Jopson at Another Beer Co., which you can find at 11-30 Capilano Way.

📣 Neighbourhood bulletin

🍻 Brewhalla. Brewhalla will—for the first time—come to New West this year. The event is scheduled for August 10 from noon to 6pm.

🎭️ Life Moves On. This original play written, directed, and performed by New West Drama Club students will be happening at the New West Secondary School Theatre on Thursday June 6 and Friday June 7. Tickets are available by donation at the door before each performance.

🏌️ Making the Cut. The charity golf classic presented by the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation is happening on June 15, and there’s still time to register. You can do so via the group’s website.

🗞 In other news

Pod hotels. Vancouver City Council has voted to go ahead with a pilot project that will look at the use of pod hotels in the city. The vote passed unanimously. (CityNews Vancouver)

No more spokesperson duties. In Kamloops, Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson is no longer allowed to serve as that city’s official spokesperson. This comes after a provincially-appointed municipal adviser chronicled a number of concerning actions taken by the mayor. (CBC)

Demonstrations. The protests at UBC related to the situation in Palestine resulted in one arrest on Wednesday. Demonstrators with the UBC People’s University want UBC’s administration to act on its demands, including divesting from companies with ties to Israel. (CityNews Vancouver)

Pay bumps? The Metro Vancouver Regional District’s chair and vice-chair could be getting compensation increases. The news comes in a proposal that will be discussed Friday. If approved, there could be additional payments in the event either of those chairs attend standing committees. (Global BC)

LOCAL NEWS

City looks to correct information regarding its housing strategies

In a press release yesterday, the City of New West said it wanted to correct misinformation regarding its housing strategies. The statement makes reference to comments made by provincial housing minister Ravi Kahlon in which he said during a media interview that the City’s decisions related to housing are not drawn from 2008 data—rather, they’re based on a projection based on 2016 census data.

“The City of New Westminster has firmly maintained its commitment to addressing the regional housing supply and affordability crisis by actively supporting high-density development and affordable housing options,” said Mayor Patrick Johnstone. “New Westminster is currently on track to not only meet but exceed the targets established through our Housing Needs Assessment Report and in the Regional Growth Strategy we agreed to with our Metro Vancouver partners. We are proud to be an example that other municipalities can look to for leadership in this area.”

The statement comes after New Westminster ended up on what has been referred to colloquially as a provincial naughty list: in April, the BC government said New West would be considered a priority community to receive housing targets. The targets are scheduled to be shared by the provincial government sometime this summer.

It’s a bittersweet time as we hit this milestone, because we’ve also decided that we are going to stop publishing this newsletter.

We’ve had an amazing two-year run, and all of the incredible community stories we’ve been able to tell will stay live on our website, newwestanchor.com, but the newsletter won’t be showing up in your inboxes twice a week.

This isn’t quite goodbye just yet though! We’ve still got a packed newsletter for you today, and our last edition will go out this Thursday and will be our final farewell.

A millionaire in New West

Glady Parrenas, a fellow New Westie, is now a millionaire after a Lotto 6/49 draw earlier this month. BCLC.com.

Glady Parrenas is the newest millionaire! The New Westie bought a ticket during Mother’s Day weekend, and says she was in absolute shock when she realized she’d won a big prize.

“I thought it couldn’t be real. I checked multiple tickets and checked [the winning ticket] throughout the day to confirm,” she tells BCLC, noting the first person she shared the news with was her dad.

Parrenas plans to pay off her mortgage and take a trip to Japan. She purchased the winning ticket at a Metropolis at Metrotown kiosk in Burnaby.

📣 Neighbourhood bulletin

🚗 Vehicle access. Per The Record, if you’re trying to drive to the Quayside neighbourhood via Begbie Street, heads up there are now closures in effect. The closure started yesterday and is set to be in place for two months.

🥕 Spring food bank challenge. New Westminster is a part of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank’s Spring Food Bank Challenge. Be sure to check out New Westminster’s page to keep track of our progress and how much has been raised!

🖥️ FYI! The New West Public Library will be installing new computers at both of its branches today and tomorrow. That means you won’t be able to use a computer at that time. However, if you need to print, photocopy, or use the WiFi, you’ll be able to during the installation.

Pattullo replacement completion. The BC Government says the Pattullo Bridge replacement will not open until the fall of 2025. It was supposed to be done this year. (CBC Vancouver)

Fatal plane crash. Two people are dead after a plane crash near Squamish on Friday evening. Mounties were able to access the crash site, near Mt Ellesmere, on Saturday. A cause has not been provided. (CityNews Vancouver)

Pod hotels. Vancouver City Council is considering a motion to make vacant office spaces in Downtown Vancouver into pod hotels. The concept is similar to the capsule hotel concept in Japan. (CTV Vancouver)

BCLA president expresses disappointment in bad behaviour

The Minorbellies’ Instagram account was among those who shared a letter from BC Lacrosse Association president Gerry Van Beek regarding unacceptable behaviour at box lacrosse games.

“We are disappointed with reports of an increase in undesirable conduct by some of the spectators, coaches, and players,” the letter from Van Beek begins. “Regrettably, many of these incidents involve parents.” The letter goes on to say that the association is looking into proactive measures—which could include anything from removal from the sport to monetary penalties.

“Officials possess the authority to terminate games due to unruly behaviour by spectators, coaches, and players. Let’s not force them into such difficult decisions,” urges Van Beek.

👷 Cheers to Public Works Week! This week celebrates the people in New West who enhance and advance the city’s quality of life. There are some fun events that you can take part in—some of them even include prizes like recreational passes. Take part now!

🍽️ Save the date. El Santo has announced it will be working with Ucluelet Brewing to create a beautiful six-course pairing dinner on June 9.

🍰 The countdown is on. Don’t forget: Fratelli Bakery in Sapperton will be closing at the end of this month. The bakery is reminding you its Commercial Drive location will still be open after the closure and invites you to visit them in Vancouver once its New West doors close for good.

🌊 Spray parks update. The City of New West notes that the spray parks were not turned on this past weekend due to a miscommunication, but that most are operating. The one at Hume Park is going through some repairs. You can find the full hours and up-to-date info on the parks via the City’s website.

🗞 In other news

NWSS incident. Police are asking the public to reach out with tips after they say a young person was assaulted with a weapon last Friday, in the 11am hour. Two people were arrested, an adult and a youth. (New West Record)

New Westies are the besties. Major League Baseball player Justin Morneau and Dr. Bob McCormack are now in the BC Sports Hall of Fame. Morneau was born and raised in New West and now lives in Minnesota. Dr. McCormack was recognized for being highly influential in sports medicine. (New West Record)

Cheaper category. WestJet is looking at soon introducing a fare for passengers who would be willing to travel without a carry-on bag. The new fare is set to debut in the coming weeks. (CityNews Vancouver)

Cyberattack. BC’s First Nations Health Authority appears to have been the victim of a hack, explaining in a statement earlier this week it had spotted some peculiar activity on its corporate network. (CityNews Vancouver)

The New West Pride Society (NWPS) has announced the date for the upcoming Pride Street Festival: it’ll be taking place on Saturday, Aug. 17!

There are still opportunities to apply to be a vendor, a sponsor, or a performer. Additionally, NWPS is always looking for volunteers to help them put on this popular festival. As of publication, the group says Street Festival sign-ups are coming soon. We recommend checking their website to see when those will open up. You can also follow the group on Instagram, Facebook, and X.

Inaugural Walk of Ages to take place in New Westminster

In a bid to support local seniors, the Seniors Services Society of BC is holding its first ever Walk of Ages. This will be taking place at the Quay on Sunday June 9, with registration starting at 8:30am. You can take part in a 2K or 4K course. The group’s goal is to raise $20,000. “The Walk of Ages is an opportunity for individuals of all ages to come together, walk alongside their loved ones, and raise awareness and funds for seniors who face poverty, homelessness, elder abuse and isolation,” the explanation on the events page reads.

🍺 Back to the drawing board. In case you missed it, Steel & Oak announced on Friday it could not give away beer in exchange for getting a tattoo. The New West brewery hopes to announce some kind of alternative idea in the near future.

🧶 Crochet classes. Cosy Yarns and Gifts is offering classics on the basics of crocheting. There will be four weekly lessons and there are options for children, teens, and adults. Email cosyyarns@gmail.com to inquire.

🌲 Parks and recreation plans. The City of New Westminster is updating its parks and recreation plans. If you’d like to have your say, be sure to fill out the City’s survey through the Be Heard website.

London Drugs hack. The company has been able to confirm that some of its data may have been compromised in an attack late last month. London Drugs says the issue is related to corporate files containing employees’ personal information. (CityNews Vancouver)

Over the moon. Some Surrey students are pretty stoked to have won a STEM engagement award at a NASA competition: the winners are from Princess Margaret Secondary. The rover was tested in a timed course in Alabama. (CBC)

Sentenced. A man who grew up in Powell River—and convicted of trying to kidnap former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi—was sentenced to 30 years in prison. David DePape was found guilty of the crime last November. He ended up injuring Pelosi’s husband Paul. (CBC)

Grocery code of conduct. While Loblaw has said it will sign a grocery code of conduct, other businesses like Walmart and Costco are apparently currently choosing not to. (CTV)

An update from The Stage New West

The Stage New West’s Stefanie Swinnard provided an update on Tuesday regarding issues related to a previous contractor, as well as funding related to childcare.

“The good news is I have reached a settlement with the contractor in question, and while it is still a lot more money than we have, it is still something we are able to work out,” says Swinnard, referencing her initial update related to what she says was construction work gone wrong.

On the update related to the ability to offer childcare through The Stage, Swinnard previously explained that the ministry responsible for assigning the subsidy had denied its 2023-2024 plan, and that there has been no word on movement on this front. This, despite a recent call to get an update on adjudication—which has resulted in no new info, according to her latest share. 

Swinnard says time is ticking, and that the pendulum she swings from between dealing with these issues and putting on wonderful events with the kids who take part in The Stage’s programs has been rough.

“The emotional toll that this is taking is immense. I wish I had all good news, it’s not all bad obviously…but we still need to apply some pressure.”

Swinnard is again pointing folks to the GoFundMe for those able to donate, as well as an email template to write to MLA Jennifer Whiteside (New Westminster) in support of The Stage if you are inclined.

Harrison Lake. A wildfire was discovered in the resort area on Tuesday night. Officials say it is on the east side of the lake, and that it is in between some provincial recreational sites and camping grounds. (CityNews Vancouver)

Who is this? Mounties in Coquitlam are trying to find a person who spat at a McDonald’s employee through a drive-thru window. This happened at the 2725 Barnet Hwy. location on May 1, and it was caught on video. (CTV Vancouver)

Surrey stadium. The push for a 12,000-seat stadium in Surrey is getting another boost with the countdown to Vancouver hosting 2026 FIFA World Cup games. The current potential spot for the stadium is around the Tom Binne Park in the Whalley neighbourhood. (Global BC)

Decision. A BC Supreme Court justice says Dr. Bonnie Henry’s decision to extend a vaccine mandate for health care workers last year was overall fair. The justice did say that the orders did violate Charter Guarantees of Conscience and Religion, but that the choice was reasonable to protect people. (Global BC)

Dive in, New West!

Betty Brussel, a local senior competitive swimmer was among the first to get into the water at təməsew̓txʷ on Tuesday, May 14. City of New West.

Ten-time world record holder Betty Brussel of New West was among the first of many excited swimmers to experience the aquatic portion of təməsew̓txʷ on Tuesday.

“The new aquatic space at təməsew̓txʷ features a wide range of amenities to appeal to all types of swimmers and pool users. From the large 50m competition lap pool, to the family-friendly leisure pool, relaxing hot tubs, steam room, and sauna, there is something here for everyone to enjoy,” says Dean Gibson, director of Parks and Recreation. “We are extremely proud of this new facility and the positive impact it will have on community recreation. We invite everyone of all ages and abilities to come and experience everything təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre has to offer.”

This is the City of New West’s largest capital project to date, with openings of the centre taking place in stages. There will be a grand opening celebration on June 1.

Phillip to return to New West

After getting the red-carpet treatment in late 2023, Phillip Fitzpatrick of Price is Right fame will be returning to the city for Pride later this year—which is happening in August. The news came during a presentation to council by Tourism New West (TNW) last week. 

“So, he was just in Europe. It’s not that he [doesn’t have] any other options to travel,” explained Gerardo Corro, executive director of Tourism New West, “he decided to use his time and money to come back to New Westminster.”

🚶 Congrats, New West! New West has taken home top honours against Burnaby in the WALK30 challenge, according to a report from The Record.

👮‍♂️ Trafficking arrest. New West Police say they’ve managed to seize a number of weapons and nearly $300,000 worth of drugs related to a trafficking investigation that has spanned about two years, per CTV Vancouver.

Fatal crash. A man is dead after an early morning crash on Saturday at East Columbia Street and Brunette Avenue. The man who died was the driver of the only vehicle involved; a second person was taken to hospital though their condition has not been disclosed. Police are still working on a cause.

The Wise Hall could close. The much-loved East Vancouver venue may have to close its doors due to multiple pressures, including the COVID-19 pandemic and financial issues. (The Georgia Straight)

Wildfire season. Some folks in Fort Nelson are discussing their choice to stay and fight fires after the Parker Lake wildfire began burning on Friday. Provincial officials previously said they were expecting this year’s wildfire season to be very busy. (CTV)

The organizers behind the Uptown Live 2024 have announced the date of the event for Saturday, July 27. The event will go from 4 to 9pm—this is shorter than last year’s noon to 8pm time.

Assailant believed to have scaled townhome to break in

There were some startling moments for a resident of a Connaught Heights townhome after the person came home to hear someone else in their bedroom. “Initial information indicates that a suspect broke into the townhouse by climbing the exterior of the building,” a release from the New West Police Department (NWPD) reads.

The break-in happened on May 5 before 10pm, and now investigators are asking anyone with CCTV or dash cam footage from the area of Edinburgh St. and 20th St. to pass it along, as they do not have a description of the suspect. Anyone with this or other information related to this break-in should reach out to the NWPD at 604-525-5411.

Changes. The City of New West’s firefighters will now practice as emergency medical responders, as opposed to first responders. This means they will be able to provide more medical assistance at pre-hospital medical aid calls, among other expanded duties.

Rebate. ICBC says there will be a $110 rebate for all policyholders. The rebate will start to appear at the end of May, with the premier saying the rebate was made possible by its capital levels sitting at more than 100%. (CityNews Vancouver)

Train whistle cessation update. A report shared with council earlier this week has set out some additional timelines related to train whistle cessation—however, a number of locations are still in the ‘to be determined’ stage. (New West Record)

In a video that featured a couple of dance cameos by Mayor Patrick Johnstone and his dance moves, Battlezone Canada—a multi-day dance competition—announces that it will be coming to New Westminster. It’s Asian Heritage Month

New West Film Festival is officially back for another year. The group started accepting applications for this year’s festivities on May 1, and they hope you’ll join them on October 26 and 27 for screenings of shorts, documentaries, and animated films.

“We are the only film-based arts organization in New Westminster, and we strive to build community through film for the people of New Westminster and environs, as well as for the local and international independent filmmakers,” the group explains in an announcement posted online.

🍴 Where to eat and drink

In honour of our sister publication The Georgia Straight’s recent announcement of Golden Plates winners, we’re recommending the following three restaurants in New West:

Wild Thyme Lebanese. At number three in the New West city category, Wild Thyme made the list for a reason: you’ll arrive hungry, and you’ll leave satisfied—and sometimes with dinner for another day or two. Leave room as the portion sizes are not only giant, but delicious.

El Santo. This downtown New West restaurant came in at number two, and includes a modern take on Mexican food. They recently introduced a Menu de la Casa patrons have been raving about.

Piva. Coming in at number one, this downtown restaurant has made it onto an assortment of lists for everything from its food to ambiance. Much of the restaurant’s fare is inspired by one of the owner’s ancestors, Giuseppe “Joe” Piva, who was based in BC’s Interior. You’ll want to come here for innovative twists on Italian dishes—but we can’t recommend the For Nonna dessert enough.

New West Secondary to get

a cooling system

On Wednesday, New West Schools announced a cooling system would be coming to the city’s only high school, thanks to funding from both the district and the province.

“We worked hard to secure the money to retrofit NWSS,” explains board chair Maya Russell in a release. “Our students, staff, and parents were consistently clear about their need for cooler spaces at the school during summer so learning can happen in more comfortable environments.”

The province is set to contribute $3M, while an additional $500,000 will come from the Board of Education’s operating grant. Work is slated to start in the summer, with hopes for the system to be fully functional by summer 2025. The installation of this system will allow for full cooling on the second and third floors. Cooling, if needed, can be extended to some of the other floors.

🎙️ Pecha Kucha New West’s new board. A new board of directors has been chosen. Take a look at the group’s Instagram post to meet the team! For the uninitiated, Pecha Kucha events involve presenters talking about topics and themes using 20 pictures. Each picture gets a 20-second explanation.

☕️ Councillor cafe. The Quayside edition of this event will be happening on May 9 from 7 to 9pm. Catch Couns. Daniel Fontaine and Paul Minhas at the Inn at the Quay for a cup of coffee and to ask them your questions.

🏠️ Massey Victory Heights garage sale. Taking place on May 4, you can access the full list of participating homes online. The sale starts at 8am.

🎭️ In case you missed it. Stefanie Swinnard, who owns The Stage New West, opened up about some of the troubles the business is facing. She’s since started a GoFundMe to help with some upcoming large-scale costs.

🗞 In other news

Loblaws boycott. A movement that started on Reddit yesterday to stop shopping at Loblaws-owned stores hopes to hold the grocery giant accountable. Protesters are calling for action by the Canadian company, including taking part in developing a grocery code of conduct. (CityNews Vancouver)

Short-term rentals. BC’s rules related to short-term rentals went into effect yesterday. Operators in most BC municipalities can operate a short-term rental in their main residence. If they have a secondary suite or carriage house on the same property, that can also be used. (CBC Vancouver)

Neurodiversity. Vancouver International Airport says it’s introducing neurodiversity inclusion training, which its employees will be taking part in. The announcement came at the end of Autism Awareness Month. (CityNews Vancouver)

Town hall. A number of people attended a town hall on Tuesday night in light of a deadly stabbing at the White Rock pier. Family members of the victim were in attendance wanting to know why alerts weren’t shared after another non-fatal attack on April 21. (CTV Vancouver)

May 5 is Red Dress Day

The City of New West is working with the Spirit of the Children Society to bring Red Dress Day to Hyack Square. Red Dress Day honours the memory and lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women across Canada and the USA.

The day was first marked in 2010 by Métis artist Jaime Black. While the day takes place on May 5, the City will be marking Red Dress Day with a variety of displays and activities.

Much of təməsew̓txʷ had its grand opening yesterday morning, which included an Indigenous blessing and ribbon cutting. New West Parks and Recreation has posted a number of videos to help you plan your visit in the days to come!

• Plan your visit. This includes an explanation around parking, transit, and walking/biking to təməsew̓txʷ

• təməsew̓txʷ views. If you aren’t able to visit yet, they’ve also got a great video giving a bit of a crash course tour of what the space looks like

• General Q&A. This includes the amenities you can currently access, how to type the name, and what kinds of bookings you can make at the centre.

• How to say təməsew̓txʷ. We’re still getting questions about the pronunciation. We strongly recommend you watch this awesome video to learn now to say the name, which means “sea otter house” in hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓.

The aquatic centre will open on May 14 at 4pm.

The Stage New West

In a post to Instagram over the weekend, the founder of The Stage Musical Theatre Academy outlined the difficulties she and her team are facing.

“It’s hard to know where to begin because I’ve not found myself nor this company in such a precarious position before,” Stefanie Swinnard began the post, going on to explain that The Stage is in need of help to persevere amid some difficult circumstances. This includes alleged issues related to what Swinnard says was a bad contractor which, in turn has resulted in delays in construction.

Swinnard is expecting a legal battle to play out in court—all this while she tries to juggle the launch of a childcare program.

Swinnard has since launched a GoFundMe to try and save The Stage. She is looking to raise $67,000.

Columbia Street closure to be extended

As reported by The Record, the closure of a portion of Columbia Street will be going into late May. Initially, the closure was only supposed to be for one month. The extension is due to a longer-than-expected period to install structural supports for the new Surrey to New West crossing.

📣 Mayor’s response. Mayor Patrick Johnstone wants to know why New West ended up on the province’s housing starts priority list when he says the city has been a leader on the issue. He gave a statement on Tuesday in response to the city being added to the province’s designated targets list.

🚶 Final steps. If you’re participating in the WALK30 challenge, a reminder that the event will end on April 30. Now’s your chance to get in those extra steps in this friendly competition!

Funding for at-risk young people in New West

New Westminster MLA Jennifer Whiteside talks to shelter operator Mason Fehr during a tour of the newly opened shelter at 502 Columbia St. / Dustin Godfrey, New West Anchor

On Friday afternoon, the province announced it would be giving New West a $50,000 grant to help with the implementation of Safe Community Situation Tables. The goal is to help public safety, health, and social service providers help identify young people who may be at-risk. Those considered at-risk are then connected to services and supports in a bid to prevent a negative or traumatic event.

“Accessing co-ordinated care is a hurdle for too many of our youth leading to missed opportunities for support,” explained Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Jennifer Whiteside. “Seamless connection to the right resources at the right time is key to hope and brighter futures, and situation tables bring partners together to ensure no young person is overlooked.”

New West’s Safe Community Situation Tables started last month and includes 18 different agencies working together to help young people. The groups involved are from various sectors, including education, public safety, health care, and social services.

Peter Julian. The MP for New Westminster-Burnaby is now the critic for health. He will continue to serve as the NDP’s house leader. This comes after a shuffle by NDP leader Jagmeet Singh. (New West Record)

Self-driving cars. According to the CBC, changes to BC’s Motor Vehicle Act were recently implemented, not allowing Level 3 or higher automated vehicles. These levels of automation don’t require the person to drive the car at all. (CBC Vancouver)

Gas prices. Gas prices on the Lower Mainland were recently at more than $2 per litre, but some places late Sunday night were hovering at around $1.96. The trend is expected to continue. (CTV Vancouver)

More records. Betty Brussel—who is 99 years young—has managed to set more records at the Masters Swimming Association of BC provincials. At the event in Surrey, she swam the 800m freestyle in a total time of 26 minutes and 17 seconds, a record in her category. (CTV Vancouver)

Sewer updates coming to Glenbrook area

Those of you who frequent the Glenbrook area, heads up: sewer upgrades will be ongoing as of May, and is expected to go into September. The work is being done by Metro Vancouver, and includes installing two new maintenance holes, as well as the creation of a new sewer pipe and gate replacement.

“These upgrades will ensure wastewater continues to be safely managed when sewer flows are at their highest levels during wet weather,” explains a notice from the City of New Westminster.

While the aquatic centre still needs a bit more time, it’s awesome to see the facility is a step closer to reality—particularly after the City shared some pictures online of the work done so far. LOOK: construction updates from təməsew̓txʷ!

With təməsew̓txʷ set to have the first portion of its phased opening on Monday April 29, there’s a ton of work to be done ahead of the big day. The City has shared some photos of the space, while Mayor Patrick Johnstone shared a video through his Instagram account. 

“So excited about this place nearing opening (two more weeks!). It’s so big, it had to be filmed in landscape!” The mayor’s video walkabout featured the outside space, showing trees, plants, artwork, and seating.

Additionally, the City has come out with the following important dates related to təməsew̓txʷ:

• Community centre opening: Monday April 29 from 8:30 to 11am

• Public art unveiling: Wednesday May 8 from noon to 2pm

• Aquatic centre opening: Tuesday May 14 at 4pm

• Grand opening celebration: Saturday June 1 from 11am to 4pm

🍺 Pub night fundraiser. Happening on Thursday, April 25 from 6 to 9pm, the event will be raising funds for the Walk for Alzheimer’s Burnaby & New Westminster edition. It’ll be taking place at Kelly O'Bryan's & Carlos O'Bryan's.

👶 Need help? Purpose is offering free six-week parenting classes beginning Wednesday, April 24; the classes are geared towards children with challenging behaviours. You’ll need to register: email elizabeth.cottam@purposesociety.ca. Classes will take place at 422 Sixth St.

Transportation investment. BC’s minister of transportation announced on Wednesday it’ll be putting $300M into transit in the Lower Mainland. (CityNews Vancouver)

Fundraiser. There will be a plant sale on Sunday April 21 benefitting The Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary. It’s happening at 1522 London St. (New West Record)

Progress. Looks like work on the gathering area outside the Massey Theatre is in full swing. This space will include a garden, along with public art and installations related to the Halkomelem speaking peoples. (New West Record)

The Royal City Gogos hope you’ll raise a glass with them

The event will be taking place on Saturday May 4 from 7 to 9pm. Royal City Gogos.

Raise a Glass to Hope…and Chocolate will be happening on Saturday, May 4 at the UNIFOR Hall in New West. This event includes a guided tasting of three premium wines paired with selection of Origins Chocolates.

All proceeds from this event go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation Grandmothers Campaign to support African grandmothers caring for children orphaned by AIDS.

NWPL announces inaugural Bridges Literary Festival

This is the first edition of this festival, which will be happening over four days in May. New West Public Library.

From Thursday May 9 to Sunday May 12, enjoy 15 free events over the course of the weekend! The New Westminster Public Library (NWPL) is working with a number of businesses and organizations to make this festival a reality, including Steel & Oak, Kinder Books, Groove Cat Books, and Arts New West. Some of the events include:

• Local author book club. This event is happening on Thursday May 9 from 7:30 to 9pm. It’ll be happening at Groove Cat Books & Records.

• Buried Treasure: Unearthing Family Stories that Make History. This event is best for kids in Grades 2-7 and their families, and features author Janice Bridger, the writer of Obasan’s Boots. It’ll be taking place on Saturday May 11 from 11am to noon at the NWPL’s main branch auditorium.

• When You Sing: A Special Celebration for Kids & Their Grown-Ups. Join author Karine Abergel at Kinder Books for a special Mother’s Day story time. Registration is required for the Sunday, May 12 event.

Affordable housing. Initially, the development at Columbia Square would have included affordable housing options. The developer has asked to make changes which would see no affordable housing included in the space. (New West Record)

Deltaport shut down. The “People’s Picket for Palestine” were at Deltaport on Monday in a bid to express their disdain for the conflict overseas. The demonstrators are asking for an arms embargo to be applied to Israel. (CityNews Vancouver)

Reena Virk. The 1997 disappearance and death of the Vancouver Island teen is back in the spotlight: Under the Bridge will premiere on April 17 on Hulu. It will also be streamed on Disney+ in Canada on May 8. (CBC Vancouver)

Hospital at Home. This program received an expansion earlier this month, with offerings from Vancouver General Hospital, St. Paul’s Hospital, and UBC. The goal is to help people with specific conditions—like sepsis and pneumonia—access in-home care. (CTV Vancouver)
