What’s the census?

A big federal roll call.

The U.S. Census Bureau’s ABCDs: always be collecting data. Uncle Sam runs several kinds of censuses (economic, government, etc.), but the Big Kahuna is the Decennial Census held every 10 years on April 1. It counts every resident and where they live, and it’s constitutionally mandated. April 1, 2030 will be America’s 25th.

Why’d the Founding Fathers think we needed a census?
Originally? To divvy up House seats, direct taxes, and gauge the country’s pool of military-age men.

The first census asked for a tally of your household by gender, age, and whether they were free or enslaved. Today, the census includes questions on things like race and ethnicity, and the data determines how Uncle Sam distributes trillions of dollars in federal funding each year, how states redraw district lines, and how many House seats each state gets (check whether your state has been gaining or losing seats).

How do they count all those people?
Every household gets an invite by April 1, with the option to respond by mail, phone, or online. About 77% of homes answer on their own.

But if you don’t reply, a census worker can (literally) knock (and knock and knock and knock) on the door up to six times. After three unsuccessful attempts, the bureau can ask a “proxy” (think: landlords, neighbors, or real estate agents) or use administrative records (think: IRS or home-ownership documents).

… but it’s not perfect. For roughly 1% of the count, it does the math equivalent of “we’ll estimate,” and in the last census, the national over- or undercount came to 0.24% (see how good your state was at taking attendance).

What if I just don’t answer?
Technically, a fine up to $5,000… though nobody’s actually been prosecuted since 1970. Still, undercounting can cost your community funding and representation for a decade.

The upside: your answers are kept confidential by law. The Census Bureau only publishes aggregate statistics, and flat-out says that it won’t hand over your individual answers to the FBI, ICE, or the IRS, with “no exceptions.” The one catch: hang on 72 years and your form does go public, but hey, your great-grandkids can look you up!

Duo’s Debut

A new era of the iPhone is unfolding. 

Wednesday, Apple announced three freshly picked iPhones coming soon: the 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, and Duo, Apple’s first empanada foldable phone.

The Duo is the biggest (7.6 inches unfolded), thinnest (5.2 millimeters unfolded), and priciest iPhone yet (starting at $1,999 folded and unfolded). Ripe-for-release in October, the multifaceted mobile was “designed for durability” and allows users to FaceTime in two directions and multitask by opening two windows at once (see it open like a book).

The 18 Pro and Pro Max will drop next week, featuring “the most advanced pro camera system in an iPhone,” juiced-up battery life, the all-new A20 Pro chip, and four colors (see what $1,199 buys you). Absent from the announcement: a standard iPhone 18. Analysts expect the amateur version will be announced next spring.

Rising AI-nxiety

A former Anthropic and OpenAI researcher resigned… then sounded the AI alarm bells.

In a viral post Tuesday, Jacob Coxon said the premier AI labs are “gambling with our lives” as they race toward ever-smarter systems. Coxon wants a “temporary ban” on making models smarter, saying Anthropic understands the dangers but is racing “to get there first,” because rivals wouldn’t “act responsibly” (see all seven posts). Anthropic’s alignment science lead echoed Coxon’s concerns, putting his personal odds above 10% that AI “could kill all humans” within the next decade. 

It’s the threat of “recursive self-improvement” (RSI) that has industry leaders sweating. With RSI, AI could improve itself faster than humans can track, making sci-fi scenarios like hacking critical infrastructure or building deadly bioweapons more plausible.

Others questioned if the motive behind the post was more of a “well-funded PR operation.”

Big Ideas

President Trump promised to cut all adult American citizens a $5,000 check… if Republicans hold both chambers in the midterms.

In his nearly two-hour remarks at the Dallas RNC Convention Wednesday night, #47 suggested the money would have to be spent on American soil and could be paid for by tariffs. VP Vance said the payments were “fundamentally a dividend for American workers.” However, critics liken it to a “vote-buying scheme” and question if tariff revenue is enough to cover ~$1.3T in payouts.

Earlier Wednesday, the Trump Administration also floated only counting citizens and permanent residents in the 2030 census and dropping race and ethnicity questions. Officials say the framers intended to count “inhabitants” with lasting residence; critics say it violates the 14th Amendment and miscounting could yield insufficient funding and representation.

Yesterday marked one year since Charlie Kirk’s assassination by a rooftop sniper at Utah Valley University. The conservative activist’s organization Turning Point USA held a “deliberate act of remembrance” in his honor at UVU, and Republicans commemorated him at their midterm convention in Dallas. The anniversary also revived debates about Kirk’s legacy, with some students protesting the memorial.


Iran-backed Houthis seized a strategic port on Yemen’s Red Sea coast yesterday after days of fighting Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces. The capture of Mokha (the chocolatey latte’s namesake) complicates Saudi Arabia’s oil exports, as Iran squeezes Hormuz shipments to the northeast (see a map we made you). U.S. crude oil passed $100/barrel yesterday, its highest since May, as U.S.-Iran fighting also escalated this week.


SCOTUS blocked Missouri from using its new congressional map in the midterms. The Republican-proposed map, which could’ve added another GOP House seat, was already used in Show-Me-State primary voting. Over 300,000 Missourians petitioned against redistricting, calling it a “power grab”; the RNC said the ruling “pulls the rug out from under” the voters who cast primary ballots last month.


LIV Golf, the rival league that poached PGA golfers using massive paydays, filed for bankruptcy Tuesday. Despite Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund driving $5B into LIV since 2022, the league puttered out without fan or TV traction, and participating golfers may never get their full bag. LIV says it’s restructuring toward player ownership and will return to the links in 2027.

Double-Double Duties

Canada slapshot its retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods yesterday.

The “dollar-for-dollar” duties range from 15-50% and hit $20B of American goods, matching President Trump’s recent levies on $20B of Canadian goods, which he said was to combat “discriminatory treatment” of American industries. Maple-Leaf commodit-ehs include alcohol, cement, and hockey sticks, while American inventory includes dairy products, appliances, and golf clubs (gander at how much your shopping cart could cost).

Canadian Prime Minister Carney called the tit-for-tat tariffs “necessary to protect” Canadian workers and said that although trade tensions with the U.S. would “come at a cost,” the Great White North has “everything we need to pivot and prosper.”

Meanwhile, Trump is taking an aerial approach in the trade war, threatening to ban Canadian aerospace company Bombardier from selling its planes in the U.S. unless Bombardier flies its manufacturing south.

Ferris Bueller’s Day in Court

A 22-year-old pleaded guilty yesterday to masterminding one of the largest crypto heists in U.S. history.

The swindler and his gamer buddies reportedly sweet-talked a longtime crypto investor in 2024 by posing as Google reps, saying his accounts were compromised. They manipulated the investor into giving them access to his Google Drive, where they made off with security codes to sync 4,100+ bitcoin (~$245M) to their wallets. Laundering specialists allegedly helped cash it out… Then came the Lamborghinis.

Authorities say they then went on a month-long spending spree (multi-million-dollar homes, 30+ luxury vehicles, and $4M+ at LA nightclubs) before an unconcealed IP address tipped the feds.

Eighteen total defendants have been charged, with their ringleader facing up to 20 years. His sentencing date is TBA, but he’ll forfeit the audacious autos to go toward restitution.

Midterms’ First Rodeo

With 55 days ‘til polls open, Republicans are painting Dallas red today for their first-ever midterm convention.

The two-day gathering aims to boost GOP momentum by uniting around its vision of “restoring opportunity, lowering costs, and making the American Dream attainable again.” GOP leaders hope the “Trumpapalooza” helps overcome the incumbency hurdle in November’s midterms, which Speaker Johnson (R-LA) called a “competition against communism.”

The American Airlines Center set list includes keynotes from POTUS and VPOTUS and appearances by AG Todd Blanche, RFK Jr., and Donald Trump Jr. Some Republicans are opting out, wary it might cost them independent voters.

In blue-toned counterprogramming, four House Democrats led by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) will rally with Texas Democrats in downtown Dallas. They say Americans are “being crushed by rising costs” while Republicans are “celebrating.”

Buckingham Palace welcomed Prince Harry and Meghan home with a fruit basket formal letter clarifying their status as “akin to private citizens” in the eyes of the British government and military, reaffirming their position as nonworking royals (translation: no official duties or “Royal Highness” titles). The Sussexes were “surprised,” reportedly receiving the missive just a few hours before its media release.


Indonesian airports are back in business after a volcanic eruption forced two-day closures and stranded ~341,000 travelers. Ash clogged airways Sunday after outbursts from Anak Krakatau, one of the “Ring of Fire” archipelago’s 127 active volcanoes (watch the plumes billow). In other island weather, Hawaii had its first-ever tornado watch Monday as Hurricane Lowell spun by, bringing flooding and knocking out Kaua’i’s power.


Russia and North Korea cut the ribbon Monday on the first road bridge between the countries. Russia’s PM said the link across the Tumen River border will boost “trade, economic, scientific, technological and cultural cooperation,” expanding the Moscow-Pyongyang partnership that strengthened after Russia’s Ukraine invasion. A Ukrainian watchdog group alleges that it’s meant to create a “covert military logistics corridor.”


A pair of “well-informed” thieves pilfered four Renoir paintings worth $10M from a museum on the French Riviera yesterday. Armed with an “electric knife and hacksaw,” the duo dropped two paintings in the museum’s gardens while escaping (these two are still missing). Unlike the $100M meltable treasures taken in last October’s Louvre heist, investigators expect to recover Renoir’s recognizable masterpieces.

Hung Jury

Lindsay Clancy’s six-week murder trial ended without a verdict.

Judge Sullivan made the call Friday after the jury remained deadlocked on whether the 36-year-old was criminally responsible for killing her three children (five, three, and eight months). Clancy says she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.

The jury’s foreperson said the group was split 11-1 in favor of acquittal (finding reasonable doubt of her sanity) and that the twelfth also expressed doubt but refused to apply it. Clancy’s attorney unsuccessfully pushed to remove the holdout juror.

Clancy returns to a state psychiatric hospital to await a September 29 hearing, where prosecutors are expected to announce whether they’ll retry the case with a new jury, pursue a plea deal, or drop charges (see our mini explainer on mistrials).

Stalled and Unstalled

Stalled talks to end Russia’s war with Ukraine are unstalling, while stalled peace talks with Iran are… still stalled.

Saturday, Iran fired on a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier and a guided missile destroyer, both of which evaded attacks. U.S. forces retaliated by striking three Iranian oil tankers, which Tehran called “illegal and aggressive.”

Meanwhile Saturday, Russian President Putin met with American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner at the Kremlin to discuss what the White House called “substantive plans for the next steps” toward peace; then yesterday, the diplomatic duo traveled to Ukraine for further talks. Pennsylvania Ave promised to publicize next steps soon.

Kyiv and Moscow had agreed to a weekend moratorium on aerial attacks on their capitals (which have been escalating recently) to facilitate talks, but still traded fire elsewhere Saturday night.

New Map, Who Dis?

The U.N. has unrolled a new world map.

The General Assembly voted 164-1 Friday to endorse the Equal Earth projection, a map that “more accurately reflects the true size of continents” than the standard Mercator map.

The used-since-1569 Mercator accommodates the Earth’s curvature (great for navigation), but makes continents near the equator (like Africa) look smaller by stretching those near the poles (like Europe). Equal Earth sacrifices the navigation lines, but keeps continental proportions equal. (See how much countries shrank.)

Uncle Sam cast the lone nay vote, saying the contemporary cartograph is part of a “radical ideological project”. The U.N. said Equal Earth doesn’t replace Mercator, but its use is encouraged “when relative size matters.”

Four survivors were rescued over a week after Nepal’s Aug. 26 flood. Three men in stable condition were pulled from flooded hydropower tunnels over the weekend; on Saturday, a woman was pulled from a collapsed house in Nuwakot. Deaths have climbed to ~1,375, with over 5,000 still missing, as teams from four nations search for survivors.


The U.S. job market got an “exceeds expectations” on its August report card, adding 162,000 jobs in summer’s final month. The rise tripled economists’ expected 53,000 and far outperformed July’s 21,000. Industries with the most growth were food and beverage service (+59,000) and local government education (aka public schools). Most new jobs were filled by women.


OpenAI’s agents escaped again, hijacking a German wiki. The AI agents reportedly made 15,000+ rogue edits to the site, including posting instructions for how other AI agents could cheat on tasks, bypass restrictions, and mask unprompted behavior. OpenAI reportedly knew weeks ago but stayed quiet; it has since acknowledged the new misalignments.

At least five people died after an Amazon Air cargo plane overran the runway at Miami International Airport yesterday afternoon. The Boeing 767-300 was going 129mph when it reached the end of the “usable runway,” hit multiple vehicles, and caught fire. (See its path.) Five others were injured, including three critically. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

WHAT YOU’RE ASKING

What is a jury?

A jury is a group of people summoned to decide on the facts of a trial.

To prevent abuse of power, the Sixth Amendment guarantees the accused a right to a jury trial (except for petty offenses with six-month-or-less maximums). The Seventh does the same for civil suits.

What you probably picture first is a petit jury (6-12 members who render a verdict). There are also larger grand juries (16-23 people) that decide whether to charge someone.

What’re the qualifications?
To start, you have to be 18 and a U.S. citizen.

There are other qualifications (see them all here), but what you don’t need is expertise or a law degree. That’s what the judge is for. 

Judges instruct the jury on the law, rule on objections, keep order, and, once a verdict is reached, usually decide the sentence. Kinda like courtroom referees. Without ’em, lawyers could manipulate jurors, or jurors’ decisions could be emotionally based (vs. legally).

How are juries selected?
Prospective jurors are pooled randomly using voter registration and DMV records. The qualified lucky ones receive the dreaded summons and now have… dun dun… jury duty. But that doesn’t mean they’re guaranteed to sit a trial. 

Next comes the voir dire (that’s Old French for “speak the truth”), where judges and lawyers weed out jurors who might not be impartial. Think: prior knowledge of the case or a cop in the family in a police brutality trial.

What’s it like in the room where it happens?
First, the jury picks a leader (its “foreperson”), then they’re on their own (literally…). They can’t look at Google or their phones or talk to lawyers, defendants, or anyone outside the room.

They can send notes to the judge (asking for definitions, requesting evidence, or reporting they’re stuck) and deliberate for as long as they need. 

The goal is to render a verdict based on a legal standard. In criminal cases, that standard is guilt beyond a reasonable doubt; in civil cases, it’s whether something is more likely than not.

Do jury decisions have to be unanimous?
Yes and no. 😬 Some states allow for majority votes in civil cases, but criminal cases must always be unanimous. 

And if they can’t agree? 
That’s a deadlock. Repeated deadlocks = “hung jury” and potentially a mistrial. A mistrial isn’t an acquittal, though. Since nothing was decided, the prosecution can retry the case with a new jury. (For more on mistrials, see our graphic explainer.)

Can I just… not go to jury duty? 
Nope, sorry, Charlie.

You can ask to be excused for hardship (e.g., illness/childcare), but just ignoring the special snail mail could earn you a fine or a contempt-of-court charge. Your job is safe while serving, and federal courts pay $50/day. (See what your state courts pay here.)

Back-and-Forth Hostilities

The Iran war appears to have fully reignited.

Tehran accused the U.S. of a “war crime” Wednesday, reporting that Tuesday’s strike killed four people (including two children) at a wedding. CENTCOM said that the U.S. “never targets civilians,” and its strikes answered “recent attempted attacks” on American forces and Hormuz shipping. Iran hit back at U.S. bases in four allied countries; most projectiles were intercepted, though one struck a residential complex in Kuwait with no casualties.

Oil prices jumped on the news, with Brent crude passing $95/barrel on Wednesday (a six-week high).

VP Vance and Secretary of State Rubio are reportedly pushing to keep the unpopular war relatively “quiet” ahead of November’s midterms, weighing post-election escalation. Recent polling found 68% of Americans unhappy with White House’s handling of the conflict (see full findings here).

Great Google-y Moogly

Google won’t have to sell Park Place its ad business.

In April 2025, a federal judge found that the search-engine giant illegally used “monopoly power” to corner the online ad market (think: forcing websites that wanted Google’s ad money to use its ad software). The DOJ, which has been chipping away at Google’s monopoly board since 2020, requested the judge order Google to sell its banner broker, AdX.

On Wednesday, the judge didn’t allow the DOJ’s request to pass go, but ordered Google to change its practices to boost competition (details TBA; opinion sealed for 14 days). Google was “very pleased” the court didn’t order a sale but is appealing the 2025 finding.

Meanwhile, Meta’s obstructing Glasses’ view. This week, the company announced updates to keep users from secretly filming others with its AI-powered smart glasses.

LA Clipped

The NBA dunked its largest-ever team punishment on Wednesday.

A nearly year-long investigation found that the Los Angeles Clippers circumvented the salary cap, funneling millions to star Kawhi Leonard in what Commissioner Silver called “flagrant” rulebreaking.

After signing in 2019, Leonard’s uncle-turned-manager, Uncle Dennis, demanded LAC cover ~$10M/year in off-court income for his nephew. The team assisted, covering personal expenses Leonard never repaid and brokering deals with four companies, including a $28M no-show contract with Aspiration, a now-bankrupt financial-and-sustainability company.

The punishment includes forfeiting five first-round draft picks (2029-2033), a record $30M fine, a one-year suspension for owner Steve Ballmer, and a $700K fine for Leonard, whose trade to the Raptors is now unpaused, freeing him to take his (talon)ts to Toronto.

The Clippers called the probe a “witch hunt,” vowing to fight.

Jurors in the Lindsay Clancy trial can’t come to a unanimous decision. Today, the 12-person panel entered its seventh day of deliberation, weighing whether the labor-and-delivery nurse who killed her three children is criminally responsible or was suffering postpartum psychosis. The jury’s decision could determine whether Clancy goes to prison or a psychiatric hospital. A no-verdict result could signal mistrial.

The USS Abraham Lincoln said “land ho!” after a record 264 straight days at sea. The aircraft carrier docked in Thailand Wednesday after its Middle East deployment was scrutinized for supply shortages and mental health challenges among crew. Its ~5,000 sailors and Marines will get a few days’ rest before sailing for San Diego. (See the rusty ship’s before-and-after pics.)

Gloria Steinem, a leading voice in the American feminist movement, died at 92 in her New York City home on Wednesday. The journalist-turned-activist co-founded Ms. Magazine and the National Women’s Political Caucus and spent six decades advocating for issues like gender equality, abortion, and contraceptives. President Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.

A resident killed two people in a mass shooting at an apartment complex in downtown Minneapolis Wednesday. Six others were injured, including three police officers who were inside the building less than 2 minutes after the call. The 35-year-old suspect also died in the shooting and was facing eviction from the complex for assault and repeatedly brandishing a firearm.

New York City schools sent AI to the principal’s office, saying children need “human connection in order to learn.” Wednesday, officials for the nation’s largest school district announced a one-year K-12 moratorium on chatbots and the “AI components” of 38+ programs for PreK-8 (think: tutoring software). Also implemented: high school AI literacy classes, teacher limits (robots can’t grade), and screen-time caps (see the limits for your kid’s grade).

Canyon Flooding

The Grand Canyon is under emergency water restrictions after fatal flash flooding.

Waves of torrential rain sent a “wall of water” rushing through the narrow corridors of the canyon’s Bright Angel Creek area Saturday, killing two friends (46 and 42) from Texas. A third friend (53) is still missing, and ~80 people have been rescued.

Scientists say last year’s Dragon Bravo fire burned ~150,000 acres of flood-slowing vegetation, leaving the park’s North Rim more vulnerable to monsoon-season flooding. The rains damaged ~40% of the park’s only water pipeline, closing lodging and forcing the park onto limited reserves.

Across the world, the Nepal-Tibet flood’s death toll passed 1,000 (see how a glacier caused it). More than 4,400 people remain on the reported-missing list, and 900 children are safe after their headteacher evacuated his students to higher ground moments before water arrived.

Reignited

After a month-long pause, the U.S. and Iran have rekindled direct fire. 

Sunday, the U.S. struck Larak Island, Iran’s military foothold in the Strait of Hormuz, targeting two rocket launchers “posing an imminent threat” of minelaying. In retaliation, Iran launched attacks targeting American military personnel on two Jordanian bases and a UAE air base. Monday, President Trump promised a “response.”

Yesterday, Washington launched new strikes, which Tehran said the U.S. would “regret.” Trump threatened more if “Iran retaliates for [the] very justified attack.” Last night, Iran launched new missile and drone operations on Jordanian bases. 

Between Sunday and yesterday’s strikes, Iran said it’d return to June’s ceasefire framework (see our explainer recapping the terms) if Uncle Sam did, and Trump said that an agreement wouldn’t be “worth the paper it’s written on.”

Apple is experiencing some Ternover.

The tech giant’s CEO Tim Cook officially passed his title to John Ternus yesterday (read Cook’s parting message). Cook’s 15-year tenure saw milestones like Apple becoming the first publicly traded U.S. company to hit a $1T market cap and the launch of products like the Apple Watch, AirPods, and Apple Pay.

Ternus, the former senior VP of hardware engineering, is tasked with leading Apple into the AI era, where it’s widely viewed as playing catch-up. Apple has seen top talent leave for competitors like Google and OpenAI, but is rolling out an AI-powered Siri next week at its annual iPhone pageant. Also expected: a foldable iPhone.

Cook’s not leaving Apple, just the core-ner office. He’ll stick around to serve as Apple’s executive chairman and to manage the company’s geopolitical relationships.

Duane “Keffe D” Davis was convicted of orchestrating Tupac Shakur’s 1996 murder Monday. A jury sided with prosecutors who argued that although Davis didn’t shoot Tupac himself, the former gang leader “went hunting” for the rapper and supplied the murder weapon after Tupac and his entourage jumped Davis’s nephew. Davis faces up to life in prison and plans to appeal.

SCOTUS allowed the White House to pass GO and collect $200 continue its $400M ballroom project. The 5-4 order split the Supremes Monday, with the majority saying lower courts had “likely exceeded” their authority in blocking above-ground construction. Chief Justice Roberts, joining the three liberal justices in dissenting, called the project “likely unlawful,” arguing Congress needed to approve the project’s funds.

Former congressman George Santos earned Kalshi’s first lifetime ban Monday, with a $71k fine on the side, after betting on his own State of the Union attendance. The prediction platform cited his failure to cooperate with its insider-trading probe. It follows Santos’ $35k settlement with regulators and a 3-year ban handed down in July. Santos called Kalshi an “unserious company.”

Don’t cry for him, Argentina. Lionel Messi, 39, announced his retirement from international soccer Monday, sharing a handwritten note on Instagram that said ending his 21-year run “hurts deep down.” The bright sun in the center of the Argentine sky-blue-and-white led his country to back-to-back World Cup finals, winning in 2022. Amazon was sued Monday for giving advertisers non-prime deals. The FTC and a bipartisan group of 22 attorneys general allege the third-largest online advertising platform secretly inflated ad auction prices since 2019 via hidden surcharges, costing over 1 million advertisers ~$20B. Amazon says the lawsuit “fundamentally misunderstands how advertisers operate” and claims its system saved advertisers $8B. See if your state joined the suit.

Kind of a Big (Oil) Deal

The U.S. and Venezuela struck a historic oil deal this weekend.

The South American nation sits atop the world’s largest oil reserves (see the treasure oilfield map), but political instability and poor infrastructure have kept it from steady output. The 25-year agreement aims to:

• Develop 17 strategic oil fields through private investment;

• Increase oil output to 1.5M barrels per day (up from ~1.25M/day);

• Maintain Caracas’s sovereignty over its resources;

• And give Uncle Sam majority control over 65B barrels of reserves.

Trump celebrated the “biggest oil deal in world history,” saying it’d come at “no cost to the American taxpayer” and would lower gas prices (see how your state compares to today’s national average). Venezuelan Interim President Delcy Rodríguez said the contract could generate up to $209B/year in revenue for Venezuela. Critics called the deal a “massive land grab.”

High High Hopes Rates

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh made like a hawk and signaled a potential rate hike on the horizon.

At the Fed’s Jackson Hole conference Friday, Warsh acknowledged the central bank would “have work to do” if inflation remains stubbornly above its 2% target, coming closer than he ever has to tipping his hand. Inflation has cooled, but Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE: the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge) sat at 3.7% in July.

Post-pandemic inflation peaked at 9.1% in June 2022 and bottomed out at 2.3% in April 2025, before beginning to climb again. The Fed’s main lever for lowering that number is interest rates: raising them makes borrowing pricier, so people (in theory) spend less and prices (hopefully) go down (explore our interactive graphic to see what this means for your wallet).

The Fed meets again in mid-September for one more inflation pulse check before deciding on rates.

The death toll from flash flooding in Nepal has risen to over 800, including 16 people who died across the border in Tibet; an additional ~3,000 people remain missing. Nepal reports it has deployed 20,000 security forces and over 8,100 people have been rescued, but poor weather and challenging terrain have complicated the effort.


An ex-White House teleprompter operator has been ordered to pay $172,539 for using insider access to President Trump’s speeches to make bets on an online prediction market. He made $107,539 with his uncanny knack for knowing certain words or phrases Trump would say from the podium; he must repay his ill-gotten gains plus a $65,000 fine.


A British commentator who championed President Trump’s immigration enforcement was deported from the U.S. to the U.K. Friday. A judge issued a removal order when Milo Yiannopoulos no-showed an immigration hearing; the marmite character was arrested at a New Orleans airport, accused of overstaying after entering the U.S. legally in 2019. Yiannopoulos hasn’t commented.


Norway’s King Harald V, Europe’s oldest monarch, died Friday at 89, after being hospitalized with hemolytic anemia and contracting a bacterial blood infection. Harald’s 35-year reign opened the monarchy to commoners after he waited nine years for his father’s blessing to marry a merchant’s daughter, a precedent both of his children followed. He’s succeeded by his son King Haakon VIII.


Lake Ontario has a new name stateside: Lake America. President Trump’s executive order Thursday renamed the smallest of the five freshwater friends, citing U.S. spending on “protecting the Great Lakes freshwater ecosystem” (see a Great map here). Amid the neighborhood trade war, Canada’s PM Carney rejected the rebrand, noting the name’s indigenous origins. American Google Maps users are already seeing the change.

What even is Social Security?

A monthly paycheck, distributed by the government, (mostly) for retirees.

The idea behind the Great Depression-era social insurance program is that you pay in while working to collect when you stop working. For most people, that’s retirement, but money paid to the Social Security Administration (SSA) also covers disabled workers and spouses/children of deceased workers. Hence the two SSA trust funds: Old-Age and Survivor Insurance and Disability Insurance (OASI and DI).

Where does the money come from?
Your paycheck and your employer.

If you work in the U.S., 6.2% of your paycheck is automatically set aside for Social Security (it might read as “FICA” on your stub), and your employer chips in another 6.2%... up to a certain point. There’s a $184,500 wage cap, so earnings over that aren’t taxed for SS for the rest of the year.

Where does it go?
To currently retired folks.

The SSA doesn’t drop your money into a piggy bank just waiting for you to retire. Today’s workers fund today’s retirees. By law, leftover change goes into a surplus fund called the Social Security Trust, where it’s invested in Treasury securities. Uncle Sam can use the cash on hand for other bills in the meantime (he’s been paying it back with interest since 2021).

How much do people get?
Depends.

Payouts vary based on how much you earn over your career and retirement age. The earliest you can claim retirement benefits is 62, though you won’t get the full amount unless you wait until 67. If you wait longer (up to 70), you can earn more. On average, though, a retired worker earns $2,084/month (calculate your benefits here).

Is Social Security going broke?
A lot of people are wondering about that.

From the 1980s to 2020, SS pulled in more money than it paid out, banking on the surplus for the day when retirees outnumbered paying workers… That time is now. 

Barring legislation changes, the fund that specifically pays retirement benefits (OASI) is projected to run dry by the fourth quarter of 2032, with 78% of scheduled benefits payable at that time. Among Congress’s options: raise SS tax, trim benefits, raise or remove the wage cap, or increase the age at which someone qualifies.

Himalayan Flash Flood

Flash flooding swept through Nepal and the Tibet region of China Wednesday, killing at least 389 people and leaving ~1,500 others missing.

Scientists say the flooding was caused by a glacier that collapsed high in the Himalayas, unleashing an ice chunk 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) into the valley below and causing an “ice-rock avalanche” that overflowed the region’s rivers. Experts aren’t sure what triggered the glacial break (see our graphic explaining how it happened here).

Now, rescue crews are combating blocked roads, swept away bridges, and mud-covered villages as they search for survivors and deliver supplies via helicopter. More than 600 tourists are among those still missing, including at least 65 Americans. 

Officials have warned that subsequent landslides and an overfull flood-formed lake could cause second and third rounds of deluge.

Socials Settlement

Social media is refreshing its timeline for teens.

Meta reached an ~$18B settlement with 52 attorneys general Wednesday, ending a historic federal trial over platforms’ alleged harm to teens. Facebook and Instagram denied wrongdoing but agreed to new default settings for underage users, some that only parents can toggle off:

• a two-hour daily time limit;

• apps blocked during “night mode” (midnight-6 am);

• no push notifications in “school mode” (8 am-3 pm);

• limits on “social comparison” features like likes and filters.

In a unique twist, Meta will only pay 70% of the settlement unless TikTok and YouTube set similar guardrails and pay ~$5.3B each. Meta’s competitors haven’t commented. See what your state stands to get.

The settlement leaves Meta exposed to future regulations and further lawsuits. New Mexico and Florida (which didn’t sign on because “the payouts are peanuts”) have sued separately.

Espionage Era

National agencies have had a busy week in the shadows.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe made a secretive trip to Moscow Tuesday. The visit was reportedly to warn Russia against attacking NATO allies, though President Trump said it didn’t have to do with any Kremlin plans to “test NATO resolve,” calling the visit “semi-routine.” It was a CIA leader’s first Moscow mission since 2021’s attempt to dissuade Putin from invading Ukraine. 

Meanwhile, Wednesday, the DOJ and FBI announced they disrupted an eight-year Chinese state-sponsored hacking operation responsible for break-ins (and attempted break-ins) on the DOJ, NASA, the Federal Reserve, the Senate, and other government agencies. 

The feds seized the domains behind two “botnet” tools (networks of thousands of hacked routers) used to seek out weak spots in “critical infrastructure and other sensitive networks” for Beijing’s military and spies.

The FDA approved a breakthrough treatment for metastatic pancreatic cancer Wednesday. Trial patients on once-daily pill Rasonque (RAS-ON-cue) lived nearly 2x longer (13.2 months on average) than those treated with chemotherapy. The agency approved Rasonque, which costs a hefty $39,800 monthly, six months ahead of deadline, calling it a “critical new option” for people facing one of the deadliest, historically hard-to-treat cancers.


Canada wrote “return to sender” on the U.S.’s tariff bill. Ottawa announced retaliatory tariffs Tuesday on over 700 U.S. goods (peep the list) eh-mounting to ~$20B USD, following through on its promise to match Washington’s levies “dollar-for-dollar.” The new duties, ranging between 15% and 50%, will hit September 8 and focus on sectors most impacted by American tariffs (think: steel, dairy, electronics, etc.).


The Pro Bowl is officially retired. The NFL announced Wednesday it’s sunsetting the 75-year-old All-Star flag football Game, tackled by poor ratings and increasing player opt-outs. ICE agents set arrest records last month. July’s ~50k arrests were the most of President Trump’s second term, and the number of people apprehended for civil-only offenses topped ~800/day for the first time ever (see arrests charted here). The increases came from a shift away from high-profile citywide crackdowns toward traffic stops and airport arrests.


Three non-law-enforcement Secret Service officials had to hand in their sunglasses on Tuesday. The trio, including chief of communications Anthony Guglielmi, will be on administrative leave while the agency’s Office of Professional Responsibility conducts a misconduct probe. Details are… a secret, but the President-protecting agency has faced scrutiny following multiple assassination attempts on President Trump and investigations into leaks.

Dolly Parton

The “Queen of Country” music died yesterday at age 80.

The singer’s nephew made the announcement on Instagram (hear his whole statement), and a spokesman later said she died after “a brief battle with cancer.” Her death comes after canceling her Las Vegas residency in May and announcing on August 21 that she was dealing with “health issues.”

The Tennessee icon went from rags to one of the best-selling female artists of all time, writing hits like “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You” and selling 100M+ records over her decades-long career. She won 11 Grammys, was nominated for six Golden Globes, and was inducted into both the Country Music and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame. Watch her last live performance here.

Ballot Scootin’ Boogie

The Supreme Court ruled that the Trump Administration can (for now) implement (parts of) an executive order limiting mail-in ballots.

SCOTUS’ 6-3 decision lifts a lower-court block on the order’s instructions for a DHS-built federal list of eligible voters to reduce “the risk of fraud.” Another part of the order, directing the USPS to only deliver ballots to those people, remains blocked. The Noble Nine said the states’ challenge was premature while agencies’ plans are TBD.

Nothing changes in mailboxes yet, and the courtroom battle isn’t over. The High Court left its gavel poised to rule on plans once implemented, and California and New York are “exploring…legal options” for the “sacred” right to vote.

Meanwhile in South Carolina, Sen. Darline Graham won the GOP primary runoff against Rep. Ralph Norman to replace the late Lindsey Graham.

Fire & Flood

A wildfire has engulfed over 15,000 acres of western Nevada, injuring seven people, destroying 32 homes, and forcing tens of thousands to evacuate.

The Hawk Fire started northwest of Reno on Saturday morning. Strong, shifting winds in the Sierra Nevada caused the small fire to spread rapidly (see a timelapse) and have made the blaze unpredictable and difficult to contain (just 27% as of Monday).

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo issued a state of emergency Saturday and deployed the state’s National Guard to aid first responders, which include fire crews from at least 15 states, Australia, and New Zealand (see the fire’s evacuation map). Officials say the fire’s human-caused, but haven’t confirmed whether it was started intentionally or accidentally.

Meanwhile in Gary, Indiana, residents are still recovering after historic storms flooded the area and left Hoosiers without power for two weeks.

Two former NBA players will not be eligible for the WNBA. Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White, who recently said they identify as women and declared for the women’s draft, won’t be getting a draft-day invite (according to a source in league with the league). The W hasn’t publicly commented on their eligibility or clarified its transgender player policy.


Pennsylvania Ave introduced “Operation Economic Outcast” on Monday. Aimed at Iran’s “economic asphyxiation,” the plan includes sanctions on Iranian enablers and a “warning shot” of sanctions for its trading partners. Iran’s currency hit an all-time low ahead of the announcement (1 USD = 2.02M Rials), and Tehran threatened that no “single drop of oil” would leave the Gulf if the squeeze continues.


After a two-month pause, the Pentagon resumed strikes on alleged drug boats. Sunday, the U.S. military killed two when SOUTHCOM targeted an apparent drug sub with “confirmed” involvement in “narco-trafficking.” (Look inside these semi-submersible vessels.) Since September 2025, operation “Southern Spear” has killed 220+ in the Pacific and Caribbean, controversially treating suspected drug traffickers as “unlawful combatants” in an active war.


The Washington Post must rehire a columnist who was fired over comments about Charlie Kirk. After the conservative activist’s September 2025 assassination, Karen Attiah posted that she wouldn’t mourn his death. The Post said she hurt their reputation; the opinion writer said, “I was doing my job.” An independent arbitrator said WaPo’s termination was wrongful and ordered reinstatement with back pay.


Two slowcial apps that send texts at light-speed pigeon pace are flying off digital shelves. Carrier Pidge dispatches a virtual pigeon at 110mph (with a 0.2% mortality/loss risk) and uses GPS distance to determine send time, while rival app Roost offers 1,000 courier options, including a 1mph snail (see how the founders came up with their ideas here). Some say the shift proves that friction is officially in.

The U.S. and Canada are in a trade war.

President Trump paused 50% Canadian tariffs early last week after announcing a tentative deal, but negotiations broke down just hours before Friday’s deadline. The tariffs took effect at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, hitting ~$20B in Canadian goods including dairy products, wigs, 36 different kinds of plywood, and much more (see what’s getting pricier).

It’s he-said-he-said on why talks fell apart. Canadian PM Carney says the U.S. made “unfair” buzzer-beater changes to its proposal, particularly around the auto sector and Canadian sovereignty, and promised to match U.S. tariffs “dollar-for-dollar.” Meanwhile, the U.S. says Canada refused to sign off on already-agreed-upon terms. POTUS later accused Ottawa of wanting the “benefits of being a state, without being one.”

No new talks have been scheduled.

Stalled

Iranian President Pezeshkian is calling for an end to the war.

On Friday, he told a group of the country’s doctors that Iran should pursue an agreement with Uncle Sam now while Iran’s “in a position of power and dignity” and America “is hated.” Then, in a speech yesterday, Pezeshkian advocated that the U.S. and Iran return to their expired “Memorandum of Understanding” signed in June, calling it the best way out of the stalled conflict.

His appeal comes after President Trump promised “the most crushing economic operation ever” against Iran, calling it an “Economic D-Day.” U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent is expected to announce the details of those sanctions today. 

Iran’s Security Chief Rezaei seems less inclined to strike a deal, and promised that any country that joins Uncle Sam’s squeeze campaign will be “considered an enemy.”

POLITICS

Ballrooms, Ballots, and Blocked Bans

Courts are weighing in on the Trump Admin’s agenda items.

On Friday, Chief Justice Roberts stayed a lower court’s order to halt White House ballroom construction. The move (temporarily) allows builders to build until SCOTUS can weigh in on whether Trump exceeded his executive authority by demolishing the East Wing and beginning 90,000-square-foot ballroom construction without congressional approval (see the ballroom’s progress).

The High Court is also reviewing Trump’s executive order to restrict mail-in voting. In the meantime, USPS is expediting changes to snail-mail standards but says the tightened regulations won’t be implemented unless SCOTUS gavels in favor of the (currently blocked) executive order.

Meanwhile Friday, in an “inferior” court (no offense), a federal judge struck down Trump’s policy that halted visa processing for migrants from 75 countries, calling #47’s suspension “contrary to law and in excess of statutory authority.”

At least 16 were killed Friday when Russia struck a Ukrainian shopping mall in what Kyiv called a “double tap” (successive strikes targeting the same area). Then, Ukrainian strikes on Russia killed at least six civilians and destroyed a warehouse. Putin reportedly plans to deploy 300,000 more troops to capture Ukraine’s eastern region (see where the battle lines are currently drawn).

Stars and Stripes lost some senior staffers over alleged insubordination Friday. The Pentagon fired the military paper’s editor-in-chief and a top reporter after they discussed the need for editorial independence from the military in an unauthorized interview. The paper’s publisher was also dismissed. The Pentagon declined comment but reiterated its commitment to independent reporting. (See what the paper had to say here.)

A Texas judge denied Karmelo Anthony’s request for a new trial after he was convicted of murder in the fatal stabbing of a 17-year-old peer at a 2025 track meet. Anthony’s lawyers will appeal again, claiming the trial wasn’t public, the jury was improperly instructed, and a broken “gentleman’s agreement” between lawyers prevented Anthony’s testimony that he acted in self-defense.

Swalwell’s stuff was searched and seized last Saturday. As part of an ongoing sexual assault investigation, the FBI stopped former Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) at the San Francisco airport and confiscated his electronic devices, while separate agents raided his D.C. home. Meanwhile, California State Senator Aisha Wahab (D) won the special election to fill Swalwell’s seat, becoming the first Afghan-American congressperson.

Uncle Sam is cutting water deliveries from the Colorado River to California, Nevada, and Arizona by ~21% after states couldn’t agree on divvying up the shrinking supply. A major drought has water levels of the 1,450-mile “Lifeline of the Southwest” at record lows (see pics of how low here). Federal officials warned of further cuts over the next decade.

WHAT YOU’RE ASKING

What do you mean by national debt?

It’s the total amount of money the federal government has borrowed to pay its bills.

When government spending outpaces revenue (taxes), a budget deficit is birthed. The government borrows to cover it, and if it's not paid back quickly, that baby deficit grows into a big adult deficit. “National debt” is just the running total of all those unpaid deficits stacked up.

Who do we owe money to?
Lotsa people.

Similar to how an individual’s total debt might consist of credit cards, a car loan, and a mortgage, the government’s debt consists of two types: debt held by the public (DHBP) and intragovernmental debt.

DHBP makes up about 80% of national debt. It refers to all the money borrowed from outside lenders. The government does this primarily by selling Treasury securities to things like state and local governments, mutual funds, and even individuals (so that bond fund in your 401(k) earns money because the government is paying you interest for loaning it money). Foreign investors hold ~29% of DHBP ($9.3T).  We made a breakdown for you here (it does include a quiz… good luck!).

Intragovernmental debt makes up 20% of national debt and is debt that Uncle Sam owes himself… (yes, he can do that). For example, if the U.S. needs money to fund a war, and they take it out of the Social Security trust fund, that’s intragovernmental debt.

Why does the debt keep growing?
There are many reasons, some of which include:

• Tax cuts = less revenue

• Spending increases (think: Medicare, Social Security, and foreign wars)

• Recession responses (think: COVID relief checks)

• Rising interest rates (the U.S. pays about $1T in interest annually)

Why can’t Uncle Sam just cancel his debt?
Because that just makes it someone else's problem.

The real lenders holding that money would lose it overnight. Canceling intragovernmental debt would gut the trust funds it's held in (think: Social Security), leaving less to pay out to the people counting on them. And no one would loan Uncle Sam money again.

Uncle Sam’s IOU has topped $40T for the first time.

On Tuesday, the Treasury reported that the gross national debt reached $40.05T and has more than doubled since January 2017 (see what $40T really looks like). In the last 10ish years, the U.S. has racked up ~$20.1T in debt (~$11.6T during President Trump’s two terms so far, ~$8.5T during former President Biden’s tenure).

Some major debt contributors:

• Increased spending on federal line items like Social Security, Medicare, and Defense (~$7T)

• COVID-19 relief (~$5.6T)

• Tax cuts and extensions (>$2.2T)

• A rise in interest payments on the national debt (currently ~$1T annually)

Economists say the threshold isn’t economically significant by itself, but pushes the U.S. debt-to-GDP ratio to ~125% (Uncle Sam’s debt is 25% larger than the country’s annual production). Watchdogs warn the spend-more-than-you-make trend could lead to a wider economic crisis if unchecked. (See your share of the tab.)

mRNA vs. Melanoma

Scientists might have a shot at developing a cancer vaccine.

Drug giants Merck and Moderna announced Wednesday that their experimental mRNA-based vaccine, Intismeran, helped prevent melanoma from returning or spreading in late-stage trials of high-risk patients whose tumors had been removed. Unlike chemo, which kills cancer cells, intismeran autogene works with the immunotherapy drug Keytruda to rev up patients’ immune systems and train them to find and fight specific mutations causing cancer.

Each vaccine is tailor-made using genetic code from patients’ tumors, making it expensive to produce. Moderna CEO Bancel called the 10-year project a “pivotal moment” for cancer research, and progress is underway for similar vaccines to treat other cancers (including kidney, lung, bladder, pancreatic and gastric).

The Merck-Moderna study’s full results will be released soon, and they hope to have the drug on the market by 2027.

D-Day Double Down

The conflict with Iran is in its economic era.

President Trump said Tuesday that he’s not seeking to re-up diplomatic efforts, then threatened Tehran Wednesday with “an economic D-Day,” leveraging “economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale.” Iran called the threat a diversion from the U.S. national debt and a “doubling down on failed policies” of isolation and sanctions. The United Arab Emirates joined the pressure campaign against Tehran, halting all trade and financial transactions after accusing it of shooting missiles at Emirati territory.

Oil prices hit a 3-week high Wednesday amid uncertainty in the Strait of Hormuz. (See how your state’s pump prices compare.)

Elsewhere, Israel’s military opened investigations into two high-profile cases involving deaths of civilians during the Gaza war, including a 5-year-old girl and more than a dozen medics.

The Sunshine State basked in the primary spotlight this week. State Rep. Nixon (D) took the win in the blue Senate primary, adding a tally for Democratic socialists. Trump-backed U.S. Rep. Donalds and red-turned-blue former U.S. Rep. Jolly won the gubernatorial noms. Up and to the left, a Missouri court allowed a new GOP-drawn district map to be used this November.

Closing arguments are expected next week in the Lindsay Clancy trial. The Defense argues Clancy should not be considered criminally responsible for killing her three children due to postpartum psychosis and overmedication; prosecutors allege Clancy planned the murders before faking a suicide attempt. Hundreds of Clancy supporters gathered outside the courthouse yesterday to raise awareness about women’s mental health treatment.

The Pentagon is scaling back the U.S. and South Korea’s annual joint training exercises after President Trump said they send a “hostile” message to North Korea. Later, Trump announced plans to meet with leader Kim Jong Un to discuss North Korea’s nuclear weapons; Pyongyang had denied meet-up plans, meanwhile reportedly launching several test missiles seaward yesterday.

Dr. Fauci’s former NIH advisor pleaded guilty to masking federal COVID records Tuesday. Dr. David Morens admitted to using his personal email to hide NIH grant communications from public records requests to protect scientists accused of involvement in dangerous bat-related experiments in Wuhan. The former NIAID official faces five years in prison; the plea statement didn’t accuse Fauci of wrongdoing.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reversing their royal Brexit. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will soon re-re-locate from California to a private residence outside London, where their prince (7) and princess (5) begin school in September. The across-the-pond move comes six years after the couple abdicated royal duties; King Charles III reportedly welcomes the chance for some family time.

Big Tech Standoff

Meta’s day in court has come.

Opening statements began yesterday in a landmark social media case brought by attorneys general from California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey. Arguing on behalf of a 29-state coalition, lawyers allege the Facebook maker covered up evidence that its products were addictive and harmful to children. If found liable, Meta could face fines up to $200B (context: Meta made ~$60B profit last year) and be forced to make fundamental changes to its apps and algorithms, like age restrictions and time limits.

Meta denies the allegations, citing its “longstanding commitment to supporting young people.”

The high-stakes trial, expected to last sixish weeks, is drawing comparisons to the “Big Tobacco” rulings that held cigarette makers liable for lying about health risks. An advisory jury will hear from Meta and Instagram’s CEOs and an employee turned whistleblower (see what he’s said here).

Give the arbiters of this case eyes to see the evidence clearly and impartially, ears to tell sincere testimony from craftily worded tricks, and empathetic hearts bent toward finding the truth. Give lawyers the ability to articulate their case, humility in handling witnesses, and integrity in presenting facts. Grant jurors unbiased perspective and discernment to deliver a swift and just verdict. Wisen the judge to exact a fair punishment or a compassionate pardon, and to order their courtroom with a firm, steady hand. Amen.

Record-Breaking Outbreak

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has become the deadliest in the country’s history.

Yesterday, Africa CDC announced that the outbreak, which was declared three months ago and was already the DRC’s fastest-spreading surge, had surpassed 5,000 cases and killed at least 2,325 people (see outbreak map). It’s also the second-deadliest Ebola outbreak in the world, behind a 2014-2016 outbreak in West Africa that claimed 11,000+ lives.

The current contagion has been caused by the Bundibugyo strain (see our map of the outbreak and what we’ve learned about the virus). Though there’s currently no approved treatment or vaccine for the rare variant, several treatment options are in development.

The World Health Organization says containing the spread is still possible with “the necessary resources.” So far, infection has outpaced response, which has been complicated by a lack of health infrastructure and ongoing armed conflict in the region.

Dueling Diplomacy

Uncle Sam threatened to bomb Oman and held peace talks for Gaza this week.

President Trump said Monday he’d strike the Gulf nation if it “gets in the way” of efforts to put economic pressure on Iran via the Strait of Hormuz blockade. The U.S. ally and go-to mediator has been negotiating with Iran to ship ships through the Strait, compromising Washington’s leverage over the Iranian economy. Responding to #47’s Oman threat, Sen. Kaine (D-VA) plans to introduce a war powers resolution when Congress returns.

Meanwhile, U.S. Special Envoy for Peace Kushner met Hamas in Egypt and PM Netanyahu in Israel this week, trying (unsuccessfully) to advance Trump’s Board of Peace 15-point roadmap for Gaza. Sticking points remain: Hamas won’t disarm until Israel honors the ceasefire and withdraws; Israel won’t leave until Hamas disarms.

The #2 Ducks flew to their highest-ever preseason ranking, while the Buckeyes will see if they can become the 12th team since 1950 to start and end a season #1. Representative Jimmy Gomez (D-CA) is facing scrutiny over sexual misconduct allegations. The House Ethics Committee announced Monday it’s investigating Gomez for allegedly having “inappropriate sexual contact with a House staffer.” Gomez says he made “personal mistakes outside [his] marriage” but his “consensual” actions didn’t violate House Ethics rules. The probe is the latest in a string of Lower-Chamber misconduct scandals.


Kindergarteners are moving the vaccine statistics needle. The CDC reported Monday that kindergarten exemptions from one or more vaccines rose from 3.6% to 4.2% this school year, the majority for nonmedical (religious or philosophical) reasons. The increase spanned 41 states and D.C. (see our map for your state’s stats) and came amid a dip in overall vaccine coverage and a 35-year high in measles cases.


Nashville and Heroes star Hayden Panettiere died on Sunday at age 36. She was found in cardiac arrest in a Greenville, SC, apartment complex from an apparent overdose. The actress’s May-released memoir, This is Me: A Reckoning, chronicles her career as a child actor, grief over her brother’s passing, and struggles with mental health and substance abuse. Tariffs: the talk of the North American neighborhood. A deal to avoid the deadline for increased Canadian tariffs (some up to 50%) reportedly landed on President Trump’s desk yesterday. Sources say Ottawa would drop retaliatory measures and dairy protections, freeing American wine and cheese to travel northward. If signed, the deal could unlock broader U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement talks.

War Waters

Washington and Tehran’s 60-day ceasefire expires today, with no clear next step. 

On Friday, President Trump said Iran was being “very badly defeated,” and “soon, I’ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States.” Iran responded, saying America must “accept the reality of defeat and stop indulging in delusions.”

Meanwhile, the USS George Washington is en route to replace the USS Lincoln, which is stationed in the Middle East and hasn't been to port in nine months. 

Recent reports allege the USS Lincoln has experienced food shortages, plumbing problems, and multiple attempts by sailors to go overboard. The Navy acknowledged supply problems, but said there has been no uptick in mental health issues or missed meals. Admiral Cooper visited Saturday, calling Lincoln’s deployment “one of the most operationally intense and consequential” of the modern era.

Floods & Quakes

Natural disasters are striking around the globe.

Hawaii’s Big Island narrowly avoided its first direct hit from a hurricane in 155 years (see Hawaii’s rare hurricane history), but was lashed by heavy winds and rain. At least one person died, and tens of thousands lost power as Hurricane Lala skirted the Big Island’s southern tip before weakening to a tropical storm yesterday morning. Forecasters warned that dangerous conditions, including deadly surf, high winds, mudslides, and flash floods, could persist for days.

Meanwhile, a magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on Saturday, killing at least 53, displacing ~5,000, and injuring 100+. Rescue crews are combing collapsed buildings and landslide debris for survivors. 

And last week’s derecho-producing storms (think: inland hurricane) caused massive flooding in Indiana, killing at least six people and breaking a 113-year record.

Shootings

Gun violence struck rural Michigan and Virginia State University over the weekend.

A manhunt overtook Michigan’s Missaukee County (see map) on Friday after a 39-year-old gunman killed a teenage boy and four adults across three locations; the suspect’s body was found in a forest alongside a victim. A 13-year-old girl survived four shots at the first location and identified the shooter, whose motive is under investigation.

Then, Saturday, five people were shot and wounded outside a Virginia State University dorm. Police found a 19-year-old suspect hiding in a closet and haven’t said whether they’re still searching for others.

However, newly released FBI crime data shows violent crimes are becoming less common. The homicide rate dropped 18.1% in 2025 to its lowest rate since 1956, alongside declines in robbery (-18.5%) and aggravated assault (-7.5%). (See your state’s data here.)

In a surprise reversal, Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges Friday. Mangione, motivated by back pain and insurance-industry frustration, posed as an investor to locate and shoot UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, saying, "I knew what I was doing." Mangione faces up to life in federal prison; his lawyers argue state charges should now be dropped, citing double jeopardy.
 

The NFL's dress rehearsal is underway. The annual Hall of Fame game kicked off football’s preseason on August 6 with a time-expiring touchdown from undrafted rookie Haynes King to push Carolina over Arizona 33-30 (watch to get pumped for football). The Raiders’ Fernando Mendoza became the first top pick to throw a touchdown in his preseason debut since 2018 during Thursday’s 27-14 loss to Arizona.
 

In the deadliest raids since June’s truce, Israeli strikes killed 11 in southern Lebanon Saturday after a Hezbollah attack seriously wounded three IDF soldiers. Acknowledging civilian casualties, Israel blamed Hezbollah for using women and children as “human shields”; Lebanon condemned Israel’s “repeated” ceasefire violations. Meanwhile, Ukraine also launched one of the largest barrages of its war, killing at least six in western Russia.
 

Claude is feeling flu$h. Anthropic, the company behind the chatbot Claude, reported its Q2 revenue surged more than 14x compared to last year, jumping from $787M to $11.5B. The revenue rocketship comes as Claude competes with OpenAI for corporate customers, and as both AI behemoths prepare for potentially blockbuster IPOs this fall.
 

Joshua Báez came out swinging. The 23-year-old left-fielder made MLB history Saturday, becoming the first player ever to hit three home runs in his first three career at-bats, launching his first big-league pitch ~449 feet into Wrigley Field’s bleachers (watch history here). Báez’s blasts led the St. Louis Cardinals to an 8-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs, a moment he called “unreal.”

What is AI?

No one knows…

Okay, that’s a bit dramatic but also kinda true. There isn’t a universal, simple definition of artificial intelligence because AI tools can do a wide range of things. NASA itself has five definitions of AI (see ‘em side by side (by side) here).

Generally speaking, artificial intelligence refers to a computer system or machine that has two characteristics:

• Performing tasks that mimic human reasoning, decision-making, or creativity

• Operating without explicit instructions from a programmer

What do people mean by “generative AI?”
There are two categories of AI: traditional and generative.

Traditional AI is reactive. It follows preset inputs and rules to analyze data and make predictions. Like a telemarketer calling you off a script, traditional AI is prepared for a few different responses but can’t veer out of its lane too much. Picture: email spam filters, computer chess games, your phone’s autocorrect, and Netflix’s recommendation system.

Generative AI is the hot topic on everyone’s mind these days. A key difference is that it can create something new. It’s trained on data, innovates, and builds its knowledge base over time. Picture: the bots you choose to open (ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini) and some that just show up (Google’s AI search summaries, Spotify’s AI DJ, Amazon’s customer review summaries).

Cool, but how does AI work?
Put simply: math.

AI (the generative kind) learns by studying massive amounts of data. Feed it billions of words, and it picks up patterns like what word tends to follow another or what a formal email sounds like.

So, ChatGPT isn’t “thinking”; it’s running the math on what it determines would be statistically most likely to come next… just really quickly. Ask it to tell a joke about the 24th President, and it will combine the structure of jokes it’s “seen” with facts about Grover Cleveland.

Why does AI “hallucinate” things?
Also math.

AI doesn’t “know” things; it just completes patterns. So it will confidently state something totally made up, with no idea that it’s wrong. For example, it recognizes the pattern that research papers have citations at the bottom, so it adds citations. Now, those citations may not be real… but they still complete the pattern. The NBA’s purple-and-gold crown jewel is being sold again.

Former Disney CEO Bob Iger and venture capitalist Josh Kushner agreed on Wednesday to buy a majority stake in the Los Angeles Lakers for $12.5B, the highest valuation ever for a sports team. They’re buying it from Mark Walter, who acquired control of the Lakers for $10B just 10 months ago and also owns the LA Dodgers.

Walter’s business empire is under federal investigation over improper disclosures for billions in loans and was reportedly seeking cash to pay them off (the loans, not the feds…).

Six NBA teams have changed ownership in three years, with valuations going wayyyy up (be careful scaling this steep graph) as venture capitalists have begun to see professional franchises as assets “that cannot be replicated by technology.”

Ballots and Bucket Hats

Tuesday’s primary slate served some upsets.

Moderate Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley defied Wisconsin polls, narrowly beating State Representative Hong, a Democratic Socialist, for the swing state’s Democratic gubernatorial bid. He will face Republican Rep. Tiffany in November, who won his party’s nomination by a landslide.

In Minnesota, media outlets called the Republican gubernatorial primary for Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth, but Trump-endorsed MyPillow founder Mike Lindell has not conceded. #47’s endorsement of Senator Darline Graham helped advance her to South Carolina’s August 25 Republican runoff against Representative Norman to replace her late brother on November’s ballot.

Besieged

The siege of three homes has forced a West Bank village into lockdown.

Israeli settler extremists began camping outside three Palestinian homes in the village of Qusra on Sunday, trapping them inside while cutting off homes’ power and water. The siege escalates a push to build more settlements in the Palestinian territory, which is illegal under international law but rarely punished by Israel. An Israeli spokesperson called the recent actions “deplorable,” saying the IDF was deployed to “protect the residents” of the West Bank.

The offenders, whose stated aim is to empty the West Bank of Palestinian residents, were removed from their outposts yesterday but still lingered in the village.

One of the besieged homes belongs to a Palestinian-American. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee condemned the “thuggish behavior” and requested Israeli authorities dislodge “Israeli terrorists.”

Inflation missed the summer heatwave memo. Consumer prices rose just 0.1% in July, lowering the annual inflation rate to 3.4% (from 3.5% in June), while core inflation (which ignores volatile gas and grocery prices) cooled to 2.5%. Markets celebrated the midsummer cooldown, and analysts are hopeful the trend will keep the Fed from turning up the A/C raising interest rates.


It’s a total eclipse of the… sun. On Wednesday, heads across Europe turned skyward as a total solar eclipse cast its shadow from Russia to Spain (see the eclipse… protective eyewear not required). The daytime darkness drew millions of viewers to the path of totality in the hopes of not only seeing the first-in-decades astronomical event, but also (temporarily) escaping stubbornly sweltering temps across the pond.


A Marine veteran was released after 4 years in Russian prison, arriving on American soil Tuesday. The Kremlin released Robert Gilman “on a humanitarian basis” after his family reported serious medical concerns to President Trump. Russia convicted the Massachusetts resident for kicking a police officer and later assaulting jailers; his family disputes the charges, saying he was detained politically and abused severely.


Leavitt is leaving. President Trump announced that White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt will resign at the end of the month to spend more time with her family. The 28-year-old, the youngest person to ever hold her position, had her second child in May and called leaving “bittersweet.” Trump says she will remain one of his “top outside advisors.”


ICE agents are getting new G.L.O.V.E.S. Monday, DHS announced plans to spend ~$20M on thousands of Generated Low Output Voltage Emitters (aka shock gloves) which deliver a jolt reportedly comparable to “a bee sting.” ICE says these will aid de-escalation and will increase compliance; while some critics worry giving ICE agents a covert means of delivering pain is “terrifying.”

Shot/Reverse Shot

President Trump signed an executive order overhauling childhood vaccine schedules on Monday.

After a federal court blocked an earlier attempt to shift shot schedules in March, the new order cuts recommended shots from 18 diseases to 11 and splits the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine into three separate shots. (See the new schedule here.) POTUS said the changes address “an increase in autism diagnoses” connected to “rising rates of childhood shots,” while leaving vaccine decisions “to the parents.”

Some doctors had a second opinion. The American Academy of Pediatrics says 40+ studies found “unequivocally” no vaccine-autism link, and Senator-with-an-MD Bill Cassidy (R-LA) said #47 “does not have the expertise to make these changes.” As the U.S. faces its worst measles outbreak since 2000, experts fear splitting MMR produces vulnerability windows, and requiring multiple a-poke-ments creates barriers for low-income families.

Quake in Colombia

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia Monday, leaving at least 250 dead, over 600 injured, and thousands more missing.

The strongest earthquake in Colombia in 50 years occurred around 7:30 a.m. local time in Chocó, a poor, remote region ~250 miles west of Bogotá and along the volcanic Ring of Fire (see our quick geology refresher here), while tremors could be felt as far as surrounding Ecuador and Panama. More than 1,600 structures suffered damage from the quake, including 60 collapsed buildings (some caught on camera).

First responders have been combing rubble for survivors, but areas closer to the quake’s epicenter are only accessible by boat or plane, making rescue and relief difficult. Colombia’s sworn-in-five-days-ago president, Abelardo de la Espriella, has declared a state of emergency and mobilized “the entire military and police apparatus” as efforts continue.

Primary-Palooza

The six-state primary stage was set in Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Carolina, Alabama, Vermont, and Connecticut yesterday.

All blue eyes were on swing-state Wisconsin’s gubernatorial Democratic bid between democratic socialist Rep. Hong and Milwaukee County Executive Crowley, mirroring Michigan’s recent progressive-vs-moderate clash. Hong’s grassroots campaign rose to fame despite scrutiny over past social media posts, but some Dems worry she won’t survive the general election against Trump-backed GOP Rep. Tiffany.

In Minnesota, President Trump’s winning endorsement streak was tested by backing former MyPillow CEO Lindell, who has faced multiple lawsuits, in the Republican primary. The winner will take on Sen. Klobuchar (D-MN) to replace Governor Walz (D) in a state embattled with immigration controversy and welfare fraud.

Meanwhile, Senator Darline Graham faced nine Republican challengers to replace her late brother Senator Lindsey Graham on South Carolina’s November ballot.

Thirty years later, Tupac’s murder is on trial. Duane "Keffe D" Davis (63), a former South Side Compton Crips gang leader, is accused of orchestrating the 1996 shooting of the late rapper and has pleaded not guilty. Davis’ own 2019 memoir connected him to the shooting, reviving the conspiracy-riddled cold case; his lawyers say he embellished for money. (See what the trial still won’t answer.)


NOAA confirmed it: July was Uncle Sam’s hottest month on record. Data released Monday showed temps in the U.S. (sans Hawaii and Alaska) averaged 76.9°F. Several heat domes brought scorching days from the East Coast to the Plains and Southwestern states, and sparked wildfires in the Pacific Northwest. Looking to migrate north? Alaska had its coolest July since 2008.


The Patriot Games crowned the nation’s best male and female high school athletes yesterday. President Trump traveled to Ohio for the finale of the competition created to celebrate America’s semiquincentennial, where 120 teens (one boy and girl per state, plus some territories and tribal nations) competed to split a $250K scholarship pool. President Trump made a sleuthy plane swap on his return journey from Turkey’s NATO summit last month. Responding to a possible Iranian threat, POTUS boarded Air Force One, slipped into a catering truck, flew via a different military plane, then publicly deplaned from another AF1 after secretly reboarding (see how the switcheroo worked). Reporters aren’t thrilled that they were flown on the decoy plane.


Your cereal might get some new homework. The FDA proposed a rule Monday requiring food manufacturers to show their work and report when using ingredients labeled “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS), closing a loophole allowing companies to bypass oversight and self-certify safety (let us explain what GRAS is here). Critics say it doesn’t pull understudied ingredients off the shelves (just requires notification) and leaves enforcement questions open.

All-Nighter

Capitol Hill has been burning the midnight oil.

The Senate worked through Friday until 4:56 AM Saturday (guess their longest all-nighter here), crossing a few outstanding items off the to-do list before heading into a five-day recess.

The votes included:

• Confirming (50-49) Todd Blanche as Attorney General in a narrow, party-line vote.

• Passing (90-6) a stopgap funding bill to keep the government bankrolled through December 11, avoiding a shutdown on September 30, weeks before midterms.

• Advancing (86-11) new sanctions and visa bans on top Russian officials, plus tariffs of up to 500% on Russian exports and up to 100% on countries buying Russian oil and gas. The bill was named for the late Senator Lindsey Graham, its biggest backer.

Still on the table: President Trump’s SAVE America voter reform act, which Senators promised to revisit after September 14.

Hardball

It was a rocky weekend for Middle East negotiations.

Last week, Oman and Iran were reportedly close to a deal that would open the Strait of Hormuz… then Saturday, Tehran released a (big) list of conditions for reopening. Iran is demanding the U.S.:

• Lift its naval blockade and withdraw forces in Iran’s neighborhood

• End attacks on Iran and its allies

• Pay war reparations, thaw frozen assets, and lift sanctions

Progress in Gaza is also stalled. On Sunday, Israel rejected President Trump’s 15-point plan for Hamas disarmament, saying Israeli forces won’t withdraw until Hamas is “genuinely disarmed.”

Uncle Sam’s Muslim allies had more diplomatic success. On Friday, Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia signed the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, a pact modeled after NATO’s Article 5 (refresher here).

Controversy keeps scoring in the WNBA.

Following several WNBA players saying they would welcome transgender athletes, two former NBA players stated they now identify as women and declared for the 2027 WNBA draft: Enes Freedom, who played 11 seasons in the men’s league, and Royce White, a current Republican Senate candidate in Minnesota. White says he’ll withdraw if WNBA makes a “definitive statement” forbidding biological males from the women’s league.

The WNBA Players Association issued a statement saying “we embrace justice, equity, diversity and inclusion… but we will not be used as political pawns.”

Meanwhile, fans of Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark say she’s being unfairly targeted by opponents and officials. The league quickly rescinded Clark’s eighth technical foul, called after she made light contact with an official during Saturday’s game (watch the contact).

The labor market was the only thing keeping cool in July. The economy unexpectedly shed 23k jobs last month, and adding insult to injury, the previous two months’ gains were revised down by a combined 103k. Unemployment did tick down to 4.1% (from 4.2%), but experts believe that’s from fewer people looking for work, not more people landing jobs.


Outspoken conservative Abelardo de la Espriella (aka “The Tiger”) was sworn in as Colombia’s president Friday. The Trump-backed former lawyer was inaugurated in the southwestern city of Cali, rather than the capital, to signal his hard-line approach to drug violence and rebel attacks in the area. He’s promised to end peace talks with rebel groups, favoring greater military force instead.


The White House ballroom’s grand entrance has been interrupted. A federal appeals court ordered above-ground construction of the $400M project on the demolished East Wing to stop, saying “each President is a temporary tenant, not the owner, of the White House” and major renovations require congressional approval (see the plan). President Trump has vowed to appeal, saying it’s a matter of national security.


President Trump signed two executive orders Thursday seeking to end birthright citizenship for children of foreign diplomats, babies of “alien enemies” (like terrorists), and those born at a “birth tourism” center (when expectant moms travel to America to deliver). In June, SCOTUS ruled that Trump’s previous order tying citizenship to parents’ immigration status violated the 14th Amendment (read our refresher).


The Pentagon dropped more grainy videos Friday in its fifth batch of UAP (aka UFO) disclosures (watch them here). The 41 documents, images, and videos cover unresolved cases from 1950-present, including a military pilot’s report of a huge black triangle blocking the stars over Afghanistan and cold flying orbs “maneuvering aggressively” near a gunship in the Gulf of Oman.
