Three Straight Years for Mazda in Safety!

Well, well, well….would you look at that? This marks three consecutive years where Mazda has debuted as industry leader in the highest tier of IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Awards.

For 2026, Mada earned EIGHT Top Safety Pick+ Awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) more than any other brand!

Here’s the lineup bringing home top honors:

We’ve been talking about it for months and it’s finally here!

The first Mazda vehicle to ever utilize Mazda’s famous Kodo design language and Skyactiv tech is back for its 3rd Generation. I’m talking, of course, about the all-new 2026 Mazda CX-5.

Rolex24 in Daytona was amazing!

What’s up, race fans! Another Rolex 24 at Daytona is officially in the books, and if your sleep schedule is still recovering… same.

Between the nonstop action and the sheer audacity of racing for 24 straight hours, Daytona once again proved why it’s one of the most prestigious endurance events in American motorsports. A marathon in every sense of the word.

Our Classic Mazda Car Corral was right in the middle of it all, giving Mazda fans a home base to hang out, talk cars, and soak up the atmosphere with people who understand why staying awake for a full day of racing somehow feels reasonable.

As for the modern action, the MX-5 Cup season kicked off alongside the Rolex 24, because Daytona apparently believes in starting the year at full throttle. BSI Racing had its ups and downs across the weekend, but the pace was there and the season is officially underway.

Mazda MX-5 Cup is back, baby!

Daytona kicked off the season the only way Daytona knows how: loud, fast, and completely unforgiving.

In Race 1, Tyler Gonzalez, our Classic Mazda-backed driver with BSI Racing, put on a clinic. He led for about 80% of the race and looked every bit like the guy to beat… until motorsports did what it does best by tearing your heart out.

A puncture on the left rear forced Tyler to back it way down and bow out of the top spots. Nothing too dramatic but the timing was absolutely brutal.

Our Mazda Lakeland-backed driver Ethan Goulart didn’t get the luck he deserved either in the opener, stuck fighting the pack instead of the podium.

The standard is the standard.

Race 2 was certainly much better with Tyler coming back swinging, driving smart and aggressive to land P2 on the podium, exactly where he belonged after the pace he showed all weekend. Ethan also found his rhythm in Race 2, hovering around P10.

Now it’s onto St. Pete for the next round on February 27 – March 1. And if it’s anything like these past races, it’s going to be absolutely hectic once again!

IMSA 2025: Big Grids and Bigger Records!

The 2025 IMSA season covered the entire nation, coast to coast. From Daytona Beach to Long Beach in California, there were over 2,230 total racecar entries this year throughout the entire IMSA 2025 series, with teams collectively logging over half a million racing miles this year.

Put differently, IMSA competitors effectively raced 22 laps around the Earth in 2025. No frequent flyer miles needed.

But hey, this is Classic Mazda and we’re here to talk about our favorite Japanese automaker so let’s talk MX-5 Cup.

The Mazda MX-5 Cup once again proved that equal cars in a big field with fearless drivers produces one of the most compelling racing series on the calendar. With an average of 32.5 cars per race weekend, the MX-5 Cup delivered action every time, capped by its now-iconic presence at Daytona and Sebring.

With so much talent sprinkled throughout the MX-5 Cup grid, it’s going to be a crazy 2026 season. We can already tell.

Mazda’s Sr Manager Walks You Thru All-New CX-5

Mazda recently pulled back the curtain on the all-new 2026 Mazda CX-5, and the message is clear: this is a new generation of the CX-5, not just a refresh.

In a new behind-the-scenes video from Mazda’s Senior Manager of Strategic Planning, Jannice Jacobson walks you through what drivers will notice first about the all-new Mazda CX-5.

SPACE.

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 is indeed longer than the previous generation by nearly half a foot, with a longer wheelbase and added width translating directly into actual benefits:

• Rear seat passengers get more leg room and headroom!

• Adults over 6ft tall can sit comfortably!

• More space for larger car seats and strollers

Plus, you already know Mazda always gets the interior right. Now, you can get a two-tone interior that really brightens the cabin while maintaining quality craftsmanship that is sure to last with stain-resistant materials that are high-grade and added insulation for quieter highway treks.

The result is an all-new CX-5 that feels more open, more refined, and heck….even more versatile than the last gen…and that’s quite a tough bar to pass, but they managed it.

Toys for Tots wrapped up this week

This holiday season, Classic Mazda was proud to serve as a Toys for Tots drop-off location, and our community responded in the best possible way.

Thanks to the generosity of our guests, the donation boxes quickly filled with toys destined for children across Central Florida. What started as a simple drop-off point became a reminder of how much impact a small act of giving can have, especially this time of year.

To everyone who stopped by and contributed, thank you so much! We’re grateful to play a part in helping make the holidays brighter for local families.

RECAP of HSR Classic 24 at Daytona 🏁

The roar of engines was unbelievably exciting at the Historic Sportscar Racing Classic 24 at Daytona! If you were one of our VIP guests, then you got to experience it all up close!

Classic Mazda pulled out all the stops to make sure our Mazda enthusiasts didn’t just watch legendary race cars around the track, but also made sure they got to experience the community.

From the moment guests arrived at our Classic Mazda tent, the energy was infectious! Mazda fans and enthusiasts mingled, shared stories, and connected with us over a love of Mazda’s unique driving feel.

I enjoyed that part the most. Shout out to the Mazda2 hatch being built into a racecar!

No VIP experience would be complete without exclusive swag. And of course we delivered because that’s how we do things! Guests walked away with both commemorative Classic Mazda Car Corral stickers PLUS we gave away bonus Race Exhibition stickers of our sponsored #57 red Miata from the MX-5 Cup!

Also, we gave away drink coasters so you can keep your interiors squeaky clean.

Lunch was outstanding. We ordered catering from this local hole in the wall spot in Daytona called “Chik-fil-A”. Weird name, I know, but maybe it’ll pick up. And it was free chicken for all our guests at the car corral!

By the end of the day, we had our 50 folks from the Mazda group be able to take part in the parade lap on the actual Daytona track!!! The smiles at the end said it all.

Mazda MX-5 Cup Shootout — Big Wins, Bigger Dreams

The 2025 Mazda MX-5 Cup Shootout delivered once again, handing out a total of $350,000 in scholarships to the next wave of racing talent.

2025’s Mazda Shootout winners!

• From Austin, Texas, Max Stallone (no relation to Rambo) claimed the top prize: a $150,000 scholarship to compete in the 2026 Mazda MX-5 Cup! (somebody get Shea from BSI Racing on the phone STAT)

• Next, was Ethan Lampe and Charlotte Traynor, each awarded $100,000 scholarships for their standout performances.

This year’s Shootout took place at the brand-new Circuit Florida facility in Auburndale, which is a track that none of the drivers had previously logged laps on. So that definitely added a level of spiciness to an already challenging and high-stakes event.

Congrats to the winners and we’re eager to see how your careers take off from here!

Classic Mazda Gives Back to Camp Boggy Creek!

We’re proud to share that Classic Mazda has donated two Mazda CX-50 SUVs to Camp Boggy Creek, the beloved camp that provides life-changing, free experiences to children with serious medical illnesses—all in a medically safe environment!

For those who may not know, Camp Boggy Creek was founded on the idea that every child deserves to be just a kid, even amid life’s toughest challenges. It’s a place where children with conditions like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and more can have fun and connect with other kids going through the same thing.

The two Mazda CX-50 SUVs we donated are meant to support Camp Boggy Creek’s mission in a very meaningful way, allowing fresh transportation for their traveling doctors as they visit children under their care.

To everyone at Boggy Creek, thank you for doing what you do: giving these kids a chance to make friends and forget about their illness for even just a moment while at a fun camp. We’re honored to be a part of it.

2025 MX-5 Cup Season Ends with Wild Finish @ Road Atlanta

The 2025 Mazda MX-5 Cup wrapped up exactly how you’d expect — with chaos, drama, and a mad dash to the finish line on the final lap!!!

After a one-lap sprint to the checkered flag, Parker DeLong #42 claimed his first-ever MX-5 Cup race win, which clinched the MX-5 Cup Championship for Jeremy Fletcher #22 after a strong, consistent season from him. Congrats to Jeremy for a great season!

Oh yeah, baby!

With the driver’s championship settled, the rest of the grid was still in it for their team’s championships and it would be rookie standouts from BSI Racing who made the difference.

Rookie Helio Meza traded paint on his way up the grid, helping propel BSI Racing as the winners of the 2025 Teams Championship! And with this last performance, Helio Meza of BSI Racing earned Rookie of the Year honors! Big congrats to him!

But of course, our hearts go out to Tyler Gonzalez #57, our sponsored driver from BSI Racing. After putting up a very compelling effort throughout the season, a wreck during this last weekend threw a wet blanket on any thoughts of winning the MX-5 Cup.

To that end, Tyler finishing in second place in the MX-5 Cup final standings is nothing to scoff at.

Despite being clipped in the final race, Tyler’s consistent pace and determination throughout the season kept him at the front of the pack often.

Although it was a year of highs and some heartbreaks, we couldn’t be prouder to have him represent Classic Mazda on the national stage.

Mazda Shootout: Fueling the Next Generation of Racers

Last year’s Mazda Shootout!

Since 2006, Mazda Motorsports has been giving aspiring professional racecar drivers a leg up with scholarships that can launch careers. The annual Mazda Shootout is just one of those opportunities where drivers get to showcase their race craft, their adaptability to handle vehicle dynamics, and their ability to manage the track.

How do you get a race seat? Amateur championship-winning drivers in Mazda-powered cars can earn automatic nominations while standout amateurs and even iRacing (simulation) MX-5 Cup champions can be considered for one of the at-large spots.

Finalists compete in a two-day Shootout featuring:

• Timed track sessions

• Coaching debriefs

• Personalized Evaluations

And at the end, Five Scholarships will be awarded: two for Spec MX-5 Racers + three for MX-5 Cup contenders. Past MX-5 Shootout winners have gone on to take Rookie of the Year Honors at the MX-5 Cup, so this is proof that the Mazda program can help launch racing careers.

ALL Mazda CX-50 models come standard with AWD and Mazda Intelligent Drive Select

For starters, the 2026 CX-50 will no longer come with the Premium Plus or Turbo Premium trims, instead replacing them with trims that should more efficiently meet the American demands for more cool-looking SUVs in really shiny colors.

The first NEW trim is the “2.5 S Meridian Edition”. Think of the Meridian as the CX-50 built for the outdoorsy crowd who value capability both in and off road. The new Meridian Edition does not have turbo, as off-roaders typically prefer a naturally aspirated engine that growls.

You get 18-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires and black roof rail. There’s also added charm with glossy blacked-out emblems, unique Meridian styling touches, and unique Meridian badging.

That’s a lot of space!

The other New trim is the “2.5 Turbo” which takes the place of the outgoing Turbo Premium. As the name suggests, this CX-50 gets a TURBO 2.5 liter 4-cyl SkyActiv engine.

That’s car techy stuff that means this CX-50 goes zoom zoom pretty fast, making highway merges even more fun as you unleash more than 250 horsepower...responsibly…while obeying applicable traffic laws.

Inside, the CX-50 Turbo trims still get access to upscale features like Available White Leather interior, ventilated seats, and all the tech niceties that make the CX-50 feel more premium than any other midsize SUV not from Mazda.

Meet the 2026 Mazda3: Small Car, Big Attitude

The Mazda3 is back for 2026, and it’s proof that “compact” doesn’t mean cookie-cutter.

For 2026? You can still row your own gears with a six-speed manual (yes, Mazda still believes in fun) or stick with their smooth-shifting automatic transmission.

Let’s break down the trims below (there’s a lot and that’s a good thing!)

• 2.5 S —> Entry model, BUT it is generously equipped with Mazda’s i-Activsense assistance and safety features including radar cruise, lane keep assist, and blind monitoring as STANDARD!

• 2.5 S Select Sport —> You get leatherette seats, rain-sensing wipers, dual-zone climate, and Alexa Built-in so you can yell at your car like you do your smartphone.

• 2.5 S Preferred —> Heated seats, moonroof, power driver’s seat with memory

• Carbon Edition —> Available exclusively with the Polymetal Gray exterior paint, Red Leather interior, black 18-in aluminum alloy wheels, and AWD standard.

• 2.5 S Premium (Exclusive to Hatchback)—> The enthusiast’s car. Manual Transmission, a BOSE 12-speaker audio system, and Heads-up display!

• 2.5 S Turbo Premium Plus —> Available for Sedan and Hatchback. This trim gets you 250 Horsepowers, glossy black aero accents, a heated steering wheel, a 360° camera, and a bigger touchscreen.

It looks sharper than the competition, it drives better than the competition, and it gives you more bang for your buck than most compact cars dare. What’s not to love?

Remembering Tom Matano, “Father of the Miata”

Tsutomu Matano (1947 - 2025)

With great sadness, we share the passing of Tsutomu “Tom” Matano, the legendary designer known as the “Father of the Miata.” While Bob Hall first sparked the idea, it was Matano who helped shape the Miata into reality in the late 1980s—at a time when two-seat roadsters had all but disappeared.

Thanks to Tom’s vision and design, the Miata’s timeless style and joyful driving experience went on to capture hearts worldwide, becoming one of the most beloved sports cars ever created.

Getting his start at General Motors Australia, Tom would later make his way to Europe and work for BMW and even Volvo, but it would be Mazda where he became a legend.

One of Tom’s very first projects was indeed designing the first MX-5 Miata but that’s not all; Tom’s talents would also lend to the design of the 3rd generation Mazda RX-7 seen above.

America’s Most Popular Mazda Gets an Upgrade

The end of an era

The Mazda CX-5 has been winning the heart of America for almost a decade now. Known for its sleek looks, fun driving dynamics, and Mazda’s iconic colors, the Mazda CX-5, to me, has always felt like it punched above its own weight class.

Competing in a very crowded crossover SUV segment, the CX-5 has continued to thrive by distinguishing itself with more upscale refinements and Mazda’s sensational ability to make each of their cars a true joy to drive.

And at last, we’ve been given a great look on what The Next Generation (had to do it) All-New 2026 Mazda CX-5 is all about!

All-New 2026 Mazda CX-5

As we can see here, the all-new 2026 Mazda CX-5 is both longer and wider, giving passengers and cargo some more breathing room. And this is a genius move by Mazda because the biggest drawback against the competition was typically the cargo space.

From the front, the design has subtle changes that follow the recent design language seen in the larger (and more luxurious) Mazda CX-70 and CX-90 SUVs, such as new, slimmer headlights and updated front and back grilles.

In a small but fun change, the rear end “flying M” logo is gone and instead we get big, bold “M A Z D A” lettering so you don’t forget what you’re driving. The brake lights have slimmed down too to draw your eyes to the lettering.

Under the hood, the all-new Mazda CX-5 believes in the mantra “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, using their well-received 2.5L 4-cyl engine and Standard All-Wheel-Drive system from the previous generation CX-5.

And for those who wanted a CX-5 Hybrid, don’t fret! Mazda is promising to have their first in-house Hybrid option by the 2027 Model Year with an all-new engine!

But what about the interior? Good question, let’s get into it below!

That’s one big screen, I’ll tell you what!

Mazda’s modern interiors have always been a high point, and the All-New CX-5 interior is no different. Inside you’ll find more upscale soft materials, more legroom, and bigger openings to make it easier to get in and out.

The tech takes a step forward too, with a big ol’ 12.9-inch touchscreen standard, plus Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

This is huge news—drivers and critics have been saying for years that Mazda’s rotary dial controls didn’t quite match the way people actually want to use the screen, preferring to tap it like their phone.

So, what did Mazda do? They listened to their customers. Smart!

Expect the All-New 2026 Mazda CX-5 early next year!

Nearly Every Mazda Gets Awarded IIHS Top Safety Pick+

And we can explain the two missing models!

Listen, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) doesn’t play around when it comes to Safety awards. They’ve made the criteria even tougher for the 2025 year, making a lot of 2024 models across car brands just barely miss out on top honors, but not Mazda!

Mazda has (count ‘em!) EIGHT different Mazda models selected as a 2025 Top Safety Pick+, the IIHS’s highest honors. That’s not just “good”. That’s the gold medal.

If you’re wondering why some model names get mentioned twice, that’s because of major body style differences and/or Gas vs. EV differences. Each Mazda model scored well in each of its tested configurations, which is great!

Did you know that’s NOT always the case for SOME car brands out there? I definitely didn’t.

We won’t name names but we will recommend you check out what New Mazda models have hit our lot recently!

i-ACTIVSENSE® Safety Technology

Okay, so the Mazda CX-5 and the MX-5 Miata aren’t on the list, but we got good reason for that, I promise!

The CX-5 is still Mazda’s MVP when it comes to sales (accounting for nearly a third of Mazda’s U.S. total sales), and it already checks nearly every safety box.

The only holdup? The IIHS has NOT yet tested some of the revised criteria but once that happens, we expect the CX-5 to be awarded properly.

Plus, the all-new 2026 Mazda CX-5 will surely aim for the highest standard possible once it’s released and that will have to be tested too, right?

And as for the MX-5 Miata, the IIHS simply hasn’t tested one. No test = no award.

Yeah I know. What can you do? But let’s be honest, the Miata’s job is to put a smile on your face, not win a crash test.

The Mazda MX-5 Cup Nears it End with BSI Racing vying for Top Standings!

Another race weekend is in the books at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) as Jeremy Fletcher continued his hot streak, sweeping both races of the MX-5 Cup weekend.

In Saturday’s opener, Fletcher grabbed the lead late and held it through a caution-filled finish, making it three straight wins at VIR. #57 Tyler Gonzalez of BSI Racing looked set to challenge for the top spot with help from teammate Westin Workman, but the final yellow flag froze the order and left Gonzalez second at the line.

Sunday played out almost the same.

BSI Racing Rookie Helio Meza started from pole, but Fletcher wasted no time moving forward. He grabbed the lead early and never looked back, once again taking the win under caution.

Gonzalez fought hard but couldn’t break up Fletcher’s run, while Meza slipped back after some late contact but showed plenty of speed all weekend.

The MX-5 Cup season wraps up this October at Road Atlanta, where Fletcher, Gonzalez, Meza, and the rest of the field will fight it out one last weekend!

We recently toured the camp’s facilities after delivering two New Mazda CX-50 Hybrids there that will help power an amazing traveling medical team, who journey across the state of Florida visiting children with serious illnesses.

Jumping for joy!

Founded in the spirit of one young girl’s dream — Jennifer Masi — and brought to life with the help of icons like Paul Newman & General H. Norman S., Camp Boggy Creek has served over 90,000 sick children and families since opening in 1996.

And the best part of all: Camp Boggy Creek welcomes these children free of charge, allowing them an opportunity to meet and play with other children going through the same medical conditions.

We hope these new Mazda CX-50s wrapped in custom Camp Boggy Creek “livery” will be part of something bigger — helping carry Camp Boggy Creek’s mission from the outdoors to doorsteps all over Florida.

The campers were full of energy!

Every child, no matter their illness, should be able to experience friendships that go hand in hand with going to Camp!

In early June, Mazda helped drive the conversation forward at the Women Automotive Summit: Detroit with a powerful panel inspired by the First to the Finish docuseries. The session, titled “First to the Finish: Safety On and Off The Track,” highlighted the journeys of women breaking barriers in motorsports and leading innovation across the auto industry.

Mazda-backed MX-5 Cup racers Shea Holbrook (BSI Racing), Heather Hadley, and Sally Mott took the stage to share what it’s like competing in one of racing’s most adrenaline-filled championships—and how they’re redefining what it means to be a champion in a male-dominated field.

MX-5 Cup Update: Gonzalez Goes for Five Race Wins!

Another photo-finish. Another thrilling race. And this one had all the drama you'd expect from the Mazda MX-5 Cup!

Classic Mazda-sponsored driver Tyler Gonzalez took home his fifth win of the season at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for Round 09 — and it didn’t come easy. After some intense late-race action and a flurry of restarts, he held off rookie teammate Helio Meza by just 0.222 seconds at the line!

Meza, a rookie still chasing his first win, nearly made a move in the final turn — but backed off, opting to protect the team’s 1-2 finish instead. “We trusted each other,” he said. “That made the difference.”

The race also included a tight finish for the Top Finishing Female Award, where Ashlyn Speed edged out Sally Mott by just 0.19 seconds. “I was screaming in my helmet!” Speed said. “I got too excited and forgot to shift — but I still crossed the line first!”

So uhhhh, I guess you guys and gals REALLY love cars, huh? Last year we set a new store record with over 800 people attending our Annual Race Exhibition Event so this year, for the 17th Annual, we knew we had to go even bigger than before…

The thing is……we were not expecting Mazda Mania to run THIS WILD, brother! We had over 1,300 Mazda Maniacs make their way in.

Over 80 contestants took part in this glorious race

Our 2nd Hot Wheels Tourney was totally awesome. Funny enough — it took longer to build the track than it did to actually run the tourney.

But you know what? That’s our own fault because we kept “testing” the racetrack every time we added a new section to it. It’s not our fault that Hot Wheels are this much fun. No mom, we weren’t goofing around, we were TESTING THE 100-FT RACETRACK!

Tyler Gonzalez Completes MX-5 Cup Sweep of Rd 5 & 6

After Joshua S. (amateur attendee @ the Race Exhibition) demolished Tyler’s lap time on the racing simulator, I started doubting whether we should continue sponsoring Tyler for the Mazda MX-5 Cup. But hey, Tyler delivered this past weekend.

Tyler Gonzalez of BSI Racing finished 1st, not once, but TWICE in back to back races at the famous Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama to complete Rounds 5 and 6 of the Mazda MX-5 Cup.

Inclement weather would force multiple Yellow warnings throughout the circuit but each time Tyler rose to the occasion and answered with confidence to retake the lead.

Well, well, well….would you look at that? The new kid on the midsize SUV block is actually a very compelling option for family-conscious owners. Debuting in 2024, the first-ever Mazda CX-70 has been racking up prestigious awards left and right.

2027 CX-5 Hybrid Has Been Spotted in Camouflage

Nope, that’s not John Cena hiding from your screen, that’s the 2027 Mazda CX-5 Hybrid spotted via spy photos being driven around cities!

So, what’s new? At first glance, the 2027 Mazda CX-5 might seem familiar, but look closer and you’ll notice some fresh design tweaks such as a new headlight shape that sticks to Mazda’s sleek design language.

Also in the front, we can see some bold verticality with its larger grill and black trim underneath, adding a layer of toughness.

Out back, the new taillights flare at the edges—kind of like the handles of a Jet Ski or a motorcycle, suggesting a more aggressive stance for the 2027 CX-5 Hybrid.

We can confirm that the new 2027 CX-5 Hybrid plans to use Mazda’s newly developed in-house Hybrid system and the next generation of SKYACTIV® gas engines, the Skyactiv-Z (4-cylinder engine).

Oh my goodness, what a weekend of racing it was! Tyler Gonzalez put on a show in Round Three of the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup at St. Pete, narrowly finishing in 3rd place before race officials handed him a time penalty and knocked him to 16th place.

Thankfully, there are two rounds per weekend and Tyler took advantage the very next day for Round Four! He played it smart, kept it fast, and took the lead with a perfectly timed move that let him hold off a hard-charging Nathan Nicholson!

Tyler was able to cruise to his second win of the season, showing exactly why BSI Racing and Classic Mazda back him!

Now the prep begins for the next race in Birmingham, Alabama —but before the next round, come spend time with BSI Racing’s Shea Holbrook and the Classic Mazda team on April 12th where we will be hosting the 17th Annual Racing Event.

Tyler Gonzalez Claims Race #1 Victory in Rain Conditions

After a game-time decision to drive on wet tires instead of dry tires, BSI Racing’s Tyler Gonzalez finished first place in Race #1 in the Classic Mazda MX-5 Cup car for the season opener of the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup at the Rolex 24.

Starting in 14th place, Tyler made his way to the front of the pack, taking turns for the lead with Bryce Cornet. When joined by Rookie Ethan Goulart, the trio distanced themselves further from the pack and took a greater lead.

With incredible skill and timing, Tyler Gonzalez had the lead and took the win when the full-course yellow flag was thrown as Christian Hodneland’s engine caught fire.

Race #2 wasn’t as kind to Tyler Gonzalez, or BSI Racing. An unfortunate wreck at the green flag took out our red and white No. 57 livery, along with a third of the drivers. Check it out: 

That crash put Tyler Gonzalez at #14 in the MX-5 Cup Championship standings. (We’ve seen him go from #14 to #1 before… he’ll do it again 👀).

Westin Workman was able to salvage some points for himself and BSI Racing after a DNF in Race #1. BSI Racing is currently at the top of the team leaderboard.

While the entire weekend didn’t go entirely in Tyler Gonzalez’s favor, he did get to pop the champagne and participate in the BSI Racing Tradition, “Straight Arm Challenge”.

BSI Racing winners take it the extra mile (no pun intended), and attempt to pour the champagne directly into their mouth while keeping their arm straight: The Straight Arm Challenge. Kicking off a hopeful pattern of Straight Arm Challenges, Tyler Gonzalez mastered his first Straight Arm Challenge the same way he won Race #1: with poise!

Mazda RX-7 GTO Takes HSR Victory

The infamous 1991 Mazda RX-7 GTO roared at Daytona International Speedway, and claimed victory in the HSR IMSA Classic against a 1980 Interscope Porsche 935 K3 and 1985 Lola Corvette GTP.

Classic Mazda customer Tom Long drove the blue and white No. 62 livery, recently restored by our friends at Flis Performance as part of the Mazda Heritage Collection restoration efforts. and reminded race fans why Mazda has been synonymous with “zoom zoom”.

35th Anniversary MX-5 - It’s a Miata!

Crowds gathered for the grand unveiling of the 35th Anniversary MX-5. Some of us caught casual glimpses through the covering in the days prior, placing bets on color and interior.

Straight from the Mazda North American Operations vault, the 35th Anniversary MX-5 features Artisan Red Metallic paintwork, a beige soft top, and 17-inch wheels. Oh, and there’s only 300 of them available.

Meet Tyler Gonzalez

This St. Cloud native is the guy to get the job done; from hopping out of his car and changing his own battery, to assembling his own trucks for back road mudding. When it came time for Classic Mazda to choose a driver who embodied that down-to-earth-winner spirit, we looked no further than Tyler Gonzalez.

Tyler is no stranger to winning - he brings to BSI Racing seven series wins over the course of his career, including some Daytona victories. He’ll be making his BSI Racing & Classic Mazda debut at the Rolex 24 in our favorite red and white livery.

The big race weekend is upon us, and with that comes questions. Lucky for us, IMSARacing took to Reddit and gave us a full-length guide of things you need to know for the Rolex 24. Here are some bullet points:

• Screenshot your tickets - service at the track can be slow.

• Wear sunscreen - otherwise you’ll get burned.

Mazda Spirit Racing Special Model: Mazdaspeed Returns

Slated to make its debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon in early January, the racing-inspired version of the MX-5 is peaking everyone’s interest. A part of Mazda’s newest high-performance division (rip Mazdaspeed), the new MX-5 will be the division’s first road-ready model.

We still don’t know if this MX-5 will be a Japan-only model. What we do know is that the front end will have a new splitter and badge on the grille. From the released photo above, we also see new decals, six-spoke black wheels, redesigned side skirts, wing mirrors, and a lip spoiler.

MX-5 Cup at Martinsville

The MX-5 Cup championship officially concluded at the beginning of October, declaring Gresham Wagner as the 2024 season champion after rounds 13 & 14 at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta… but that wasn’t the end for MX-5 Cup this month.

The Non-Points Race in Martinsville on October 26th was 105-laps with $25,000 on the line. The race served better for some than others. Classic Mazda alum, Selin Rollan, started strong to then be taken out by technical issues (such a shame, his car looked awesome!).

The first oval race for the series adopted some short track oval traditions and adjustments for the series. The “Choose Rule” for example allows drivers to choose which lane they restart in when preparing for a restart from yellow.

In the end it was Jared Thomas who took home the win of $25,000 and a Martinsville clock. BSI Racing’s and 2024 Rookie of the Year, Westin Workman, raced an oval for the first time and still locked in a second-place finish and a $10,000 check.

We’re already looking forward to the 2025 MX-5 Cup season! The schedule was just announced, making two Florida appearances in Daytona, and St Petersburg.

Mazda Speaks for Itself

Have you caught the latest commercial campaign from Mazda? The series of “Mazda Speaks for Itself” showcases different Mazda vehicles within different circumstances and different connections.

While the character dynamics and vehicle promotion may differ from commercial to commercial; the dialogue remains the same: “Mazda”.

Take this spot for the CX-30. A daughter shows her new Mazda to her father, and replies “Mazda” to show off the features of the Turbo with AWD.

“Mazdaese” can be tricky to learn, so let me give you a quick translation lesson for the 2025 CX-30:

The RX-792P : Then & Now

The restored Mazda rotaries reunion got our gears turning, and we can’t wait to see for ourselves some of those Heritage Collection Mazdas back in action one of these days. Until then, let’s rewind to 1992 and take a look at the RX-792P.

After the success of the RX-7, Mazda embarked on the new challenge of the RX-792P (named for 1992 and Prototype). With a tub built from carbon fiber and a large exposed vent from the wheel well, designers Lee Dykstra and Randy Wittine with Crawford Composites would build a total of three RX-792Ps before the project concluded.

With intentions of victory in the 1992 racing season, Mazda Motorsports took the RX-792P to compete; from Grand Prix of Miami, 12 Hours of Sebring, Lime Rock Park, Watkins Glen, Laguna Seca, and a few in between.

Facing mechanical issues and budget constraints, the RX-792P project was shelved at those three cars. Lucky for us and Mazda enthusiasts everywhere, Flis Performance and Mazda Motorsports are including the RX-792P in their restoration efforts of the Mazda Heritage Collection.

Did we mention that the RX-792P is making a special appearance at the Lakeland Lake Mirror Classic Car Show? That’s right, our sister store Mazda Lakeland will be hosting the RX-792P during their time at Lake Mirror October 18th-20th.

Heritage Collection Rotaries at Rolex Reunion

You might recall that Mazda is teaming up with Flis Performance to restore their collection of iconic race cars : The Heritage Collection.

A trio of restored Mazda rotaries were in full force at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion this month. The RX-70 was driven by MX-5 Cup champion Jared Thomas.

Marshall Pruett caught up with Jonathan Applegate, the Mazda Motorsports senior manager, and Jared Thomas to talk about the momentum of the rotary’s presence at Monterey.

Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup - Speeding Up

Rounds 11 & 12 in Aton, VA

Rounds 11 and 12 of the MX-5 Cup took place at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) in Alton, VA on August 23-25. It was a successful weekend for Jeremy Fletcher of McCumbee McAleer Racing, claiming the victory in both races.

MX-5 Cup at Martinsville

The MX-5 Cup had a successful open test at Martinsville Speedway - soon after the announcement of the Virginia is for Race Lovers event. 20 drivers participated in the open test.

The test was two 2-hour sessions, one of which taking place in the evening under the lights. Drivers were able to practice race starts during the sessions as well.

The 2025 Mazda CX-30

With 8 available trim levels, the CX-30 has something for everyone.

Now you might be thinking: what’s the difference between the CX-30 and the CX-5? Well the CX-30 is slightly more compact, giving it a greater fuel economy at a lower entry price.

With 20.2 cubic ft of cargo space with upright seats, or 45.2 cu ft with folded seats, there’s still plenty of room in the CX-30. That’s 6,359 bananas worth of space with the seats up, or 14,287 with the seats down. 🍌 🍌 🍌

“New” Logo versus Current Logo: The Results

In our last edition, we told you about the trademark filings for the new Mazda logo. We know it might’ve been premature, but we still wanted to know what our readers thought.

If the 75% majority of the vote didn’t make it obvious that you liked the current logo better than the proposed new one, then the comments sure did. Here are a few of my less-opinionated favorites.

New Mazda Logo??

We’re no strangers to learning Mazda news through trademark filings. Remember our 6e speculations and our later EZ-6 verification? Yep, we learned it first from a trademark filing.

And now we’re learning about a potential logo change through a trademark filing too. Check it out, on the left is the current Mazda logo, on the right is the proposed new one.

It’s not a super dramatic redesign; but we do notice a more circular edge and sharper M-angles in this two-dimensional design. We can’t know for certain whether or not this will be a Mazda-wide redesign, or something reserved for corporate letterheads.

Although… we may have already seen this new logo in concept action. What do you think? Is that the “new logo” on the Arata concept car?

Incoming: Mazdaspeed Miata

Since Mazda Spirit Racing showcased a Miata concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January, a Mazdaspeed Miata is all we can think about. So is this soft-top spotted testing at Nürburgring the Mazdaspeed Miata we’ve all been eagerly waiting for??

Mazda Spirit Racing is essentially picking up where Mazdaspeed left off, currently developing high-performance Mazdas. Between the concept and the Nürburgring tests, we may have a lot to look forward to including some new features:

• two-piece front splitter

• side skirts

• taller rear spoiler

• rear diffuser

• six-spoke Rays wheels

We know better than to get our hopes up, but it would be pretty cool if Mazda launched the MSR MX-5 during the 35th anniversary of the MX-5. What do you think? ⬇️

MX-5 Cup to Race at Martinsville Speedway

It’s been a long time coming, and now it’s officially official: The MX-5 Cup is coming to Martinsville Speedway. That’s right, your favorite racing series is heading to the oval track for 100 laps as part of the “Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300” event on October 26th.

The event won’t count towards the Championship, and entries are not limited to MX-5 Cup or IMSA drivers and teams.

Needless to say, we can’t wait to see those Miatas out on the track. In the meantime, check out the tests with Dale Earnhardt Jr., Clay Campbell, Bobby Labonte, and Chad McCumbee.

Rounds 9 & 10 of MX-5 Cup in Bowmanville

Speaking of our favorite racing series, rounds 9 & 10 of the MX-5 Cup were held in Bowmanville, Ontario on Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Our friends at BSI Racing had a successful Race One, achieving multiple podiums while in Canada. After an eventful race one with six different lead changes, Westin Workman was able to claim the victory after first-to-finish-line Gresham Wagner received a 10-second penalty.

Connor Zilisch took a P3 finish in Race One, and Heather Hadley earned the Top Finishing Female Award with a P12 finish, and $2,000 check.

Westin Workman was able to secure a point lead over the fellow rookie and scholarship recipient, Nathan Nicholson.

Way to go, BSI Racing! Your friends at Classic Mazda are proud of you.

Miatas at the Gap

All this talk about Miatas is making us wish there was some sort of gathering where we could drive long winding roads with other Miatas…
