Sam Bankman-Fried: The Jordan Belfort of Crypto?

Sam Bankman-Fried is the founder and former CEO of the now-famous (and failed) cryptocurrency exchange, FTX. Sam was also the founder and CEO of the hedge fund, Alameda Research.

But don’t be mistaken. Sam wasn’t a regular CEO, he was a cool CEO – with his shorts, messy hair and laid-back ethics. After the spring’s crypto crash, Alameda was in financial trouble. So, FTX swooped in to save the day. FTX gave Alameda billions of dollars from customer’s deposits… without their knowledge or consent.

Sam’s logic seemed to be: Play dirty, but don’t get caught.

Ultimately, they were caught when their biggest investor and competitor, Binance, sold all their FTX holdings. FTX was left drowning in billions worth of debt, with no cash to pay it back. It was a betrayal only a real frenemy could pull off. So, FTX and Alameda Research were forced to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Yikes!

Both companies’ finances were messy, but their workplace culture seemed just as off. More Woodstock and Stratton Oakmont vibes than big-time corporate. Sam and his on-and-off girlfriend and Alameda’s CEO, Caroline Ellison, were dedicated to a good work-life balance. This included polycules and in-house psychiatrists prescribing drugs all during regular business hours. But, their office parties were always kept PG – employees played board games and only drank a quarter of a beer. Sounds like a fun time for high schoolers!

Mike Sorrentino: "The Situation" turned "The Investigation"

Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino is one of the famed “Jersey Shore” cast members. The reality show was a gold mine for MTV. It followed six Italian-Americans who became summer roommates at Seaside Heights. Episodes were filled with drunken hook-ups, fist pumping, bar fights, and frequent use of the term “guido.” Ah, New Jersey at its finest.

But we can’t forget about the group’s fav activity: GTL - Gym, Tan, Laundry. Unlike his roommates, Mike participated in Gym, Tax Evasion, Launder!

Sounds like we have a situation on our hands.

At the height of the show’s success, Mike was being paid $150,000 per episode, along with being paid cash for appearances. I mean “The Situation '' was already showcasing his abs to every girl in a club – why not get paid for it?

But Mike was too busy flexing his muscles to report his personal income. Making multiple, same-day cash deposits into different bank accounts, in amounts less than $10,000, to avoid reporting it to the IRS.

Charges were brought against Mike in 2014 and 2017 for falsified tax returns on $9 million worth of income. He was sentenced to 8 months in prison.

Of course, MTV couldn’t pass up the chance to film the entire legal process with Mike’s arrest and indictment. You can actually watch it all play out on season 3 of Jersey Shore: Family Vacation.

Meet the "New" Anna Delvey: Nicholas Bryant

Nicholas Bryant grew up in a small town in Texas. Even back then, he was always caught up in financial troubles. After deciding that no respectable billionaire would play at Topgolf, Nicholas and his friend thought neither should they. The pair ditched golfing to fly from Dallas to Arizona on none other than a private jet (unfourtantely Air Kim wasn’t available). I mean flying American Airlines is so not the vibe for this “baller.”

You may be wondering, for someone with money problems, how could he afford a PJ? If you guessed wired fraud – you are correct!

Thus, Nicholas began his scheme of booking goods and services, paying through platforms like Quickbooks, and then canceling the payments before any money was sent.

All-in-all, Nicholas is estimated to have stole $1.5 million in his fraud scheme.

But, Nicholas’ scheme went beyond just businesses. He of course catfished people out of money by pretending to be a recently cut-off, down on his luck son of an oil baron. From racking up free trips, cars, and cash to racking up criminal charges, Nicholas Bryant’s scam came to end with a free trip to prison… for 20 years.

Meet Anna Delvey’s Disbarred Lawyer: Audrey A. Thomas

It’s one thing to represent notorious socialite scammer Anna Delvey, but to get caught red-handed for scamming other clients? This is not the law school curriculum Elle Woods taught me!

Anna Delvey’s former lawyer, Audrey A. Thomas, has been disbarred for her decade-old scam. She allegedly misappropriated $600,000 of her elderly client funds during an apartment sale. Audrey used the cash to promote herself as an author and radio show host. Because everyone knows just being a lawyer doesn’t cut it. Lawyer-author-radio show host has a better ring to it!

When confronted about the missing money, Audrey pinky-swore to return it all through a payment plan, but those payments stopped in 2018. She was brought before a disciplinary hearing and is now facing prison time.

I just know Netflix is salivating at the idea of a new show about a scammer’s former lawyer caught running her scam. It’s priceless and ironic. We love to see it!

Teresa Giudice has been a Real Housewife of New Jersey since its first season.

She has also been a competitive bodybuilder, “written” six books and released a line of Bellini cocktails that are no longer available — trust me I looked into it. 

Teresa was married for 20 years to Joe Giudice, an Italian business owner with whom she had four daughters. 

From 2004 to 2008, the couple engaged in all sorts of romantic activities like falsifying information to receive millions of dollars in loans and failing to file taxes. They also filed for bankruptcy soon after joining the show, claiming to owe millions to creditors.

He started working when he dropped out of high school, painting houses for his father’s company and selling used furniture he found by the side of the road.

In 1990, he started a credit repair business called Unknown Concepts, then began selling a booklet on recovering a Federal Housing Administration insurance refund after paying off a home mortgage. And you thought finance was exciting!

He rose to fame in the early to mid 90s through infomercials claiming that he was making $50,000 a week through newspaper ads.

The birther of this iconic catastrophe is serial fraudster Billy McFarland, and Fyre was not his first venture.

Part 1 of the Martin Shkreli Story

Martin Shkreli came from surprisingly humble beginnings, being raised in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, by Albanian and Croatian immigrant parents who both worked as janitors. 

Martin was clearly a bright kid with an interest in science and finance. He attended Hunter College, a competitive Upper East Side high school, but was kicked out before he got the chance to graduate. 

Martin ended up completing his studies at City-As-School High School, landing a hedge fund internship, receiving a business degree from Baruch College, and spending a handful of years working in finance. 

Shkreli spent a lot of his career shorting stocks, which is essentially betting against a stock. It’s like going to a wedding and your plus one that the couple is going to get divorced. 

He soon started his own hedge fund MSMB Capital Management in 2009 and founded Retrophin under the MSMB umbrella with the mission of creating treatments for rare diseases.

Part 2 of the Martin Shkreli Story

Unsurprisingly, the tale of infamous Pharma bro Martin Shkreli does not end when he was found guilty for securities fraud.

In August 2017, Shkreli was free on $5 million bail while he awaited sentencing. After his bail was revoked because of what the judge claimed was a solicitation to assault — a Facebook post about Hillary Clinton — his sentence came in: He was to serve a 7 year sentence and forfeit more than $7.3 million in assets.

All the while, something unexpected was happening. It was later revealed that Shkreli had supposedly fallen in love. Who’s the lucky lady, you ask? Christie Smythe, the reporter who broke the news of Shkreli’s arrest.

Ghislaine Maxwell's trial is finally over. She has been convicted of five federal sex trafficking charges and faces up to 65 years in prison. But, let's take a look back at her trial for a second.

At a 2020 bail hearing, Ghislaine Maxwell claimed she had less than a million dollars in the bank and no monthly income. Like, not even OnlyFans.

Now obviously, she grew up wealthy as her father was media mogul Robert Maxwell. But after his death, creditors found that his company was actually billions of dollars in debt.

Around this time, Ghislaine moved to New York in a $2,000/month Upper East Side apartment and started working in real estate. She lived off of a trust fund set up by her father that paid $100,000 per year.

Her lifestyle changed dramatically, however, when she met her longtime associate Jeffrey Epstein.
