Today, I want to share a simple yet profound lesson I learned recently during a walk to the grocery store with my little daughter. It was her first time walking with me to get groceries-but first, let’s dive into our weekly inventory check.

Weekly Inventory Check

December is here, a month that often feels like a reset button. For some, it’s about closing off any loose ends from the yearly plan. For others, it’s a time to take things slow, enjoy life, and prepare for a fresh start in January. But I’d like to challenge that mindset—why wait for the calendar to dictate your goals? Whether it’s a new plan, a habit, or an intention, don’t let an arbitrary date hold you back. Start whenever you feel ready, even if it’s today.

Learnings from Unexpected Teachers

Over the weekend, I decided to take my daughter on a short 10-minute walk to the grocery store. Since she’s getting older, I thought it would be a fun way for her to explore the world. What I didn’t anticipate was how much she would slow us down—not out of difficulty, but out of pure curiosity. A 10-minute walk turned into 30 minutes as she stopped to touch the leaves, admire the fall trees, and feel the textures of the path beneath her feet.

Her wonder made me realize how often I rush through life on autopilot, barely noticing the beauty around me. It’s not just walks—this happens with meals, too. For me, eating is a quick, efficient process. But for her, every bite is an event, every moment a lesson in mindfulness.

As a parent, I thought I was the teacher, but it turns out she’s teaching me to slow down, be present, and appreciate the small things I often overlook. Children have a way of showing us the world with fresh eyes, reminding us to find joy in the ordinary.

Want More?

This article explores how adopting a slower pace can enhance personal development. It emphasizes that slowing down allows for better decision-making, deeper connections, and more meaningful experiences, all of which contribute to overall growth.

This piece explores how integrating curiosity into mindfulness can enhance awareness and enrich personal experiences.

This piece discusses how living slowly and mindfully can expand our perception of time, leading to a more fulfilling life. It suggests that by being present, we can absorb more experiences, which has a time-stretching effect and enhances well-being.

Thoughts to Leave You With

The next time you’re on a quick errand or stuck in a routine, take a moment to pause. Admire the path you’re on, the things you usually take for granted. I never imagined my child would teach me mindfulness, but I’m grateful for the lesson. Maybe, in your busy day, you’ll find a similar moment of clarity.

Powered by beehiiv

It’s been quite a while since our last newsletter. The past month and a half have been a whirlwind with TEDx preparations, but I’m thrilled to share that it’s finally wrapped up. With that, new opportunities have surfaced, and today I actually want to talk about those new opportunities. But first…

Weekly Inventory Check

It’s been a while since we last did this, but October has ended, November has begun, and I hope you’ve taken the time to reflect on your progress. What worked last month? What didn’t? How can you improve this month? By now, I hope these questions have become second nature, helping you stay on track and iterate on your goals. If not, now’s the perfect time to start again.

Picking a Lane – The Struggle to Focus

November 8th, I had the privilege of delivering my TEDx talk to an audience of 300 people. It was an incredible experience, and the feedback I received was overwhelming. Many people came up to me afterward, suggesting that speaking is something I should pursue professionally. This sparked a new aspiration in me, but it also brought up an old struggle: my inability to focus on one thing at a time.

Over the past 6–7 years, I’ve explored at least a gazillion different ventures. From forex trading and building bots to planning gaming e-sports tournaments, creating content, starting a podcast and a newsletter, building websites, expanding my data consultancy, trying and failing to build a coaching practise and currently an AI startup. Add speaking to the mix, and you can see the pattern.

On the surface, it might seem like ambition, but to me, it feels more like distraction. I’ve been chasing shiny new ideas while leaving behind unfinished projects. If I had focused on one thing at a time, perhaps I’d have seen significant progress by now.

This realization hit hard. My year started with clear goals: financial, physical stability and family time. But despite maintaining my family routines, I didn’t save as much as I’d hoped, and I gained more weight than ever. Distractions led me off track, proving that trying to juggle too many things at once isn’t the recipe for success.

Successful people don’t scatter their focus—they build a strong foundation. Imagine constructing a building: you lay the base first and then build floor by floor. You don’t start on one side of the building end to end and then move to the other side and start again from the foundation. This is what I need to learn.

To put it into perspective, if my focus is on speaking and sharing ideas, I should start with the basics. Building credibility as a thought leader online, creating valuable content, and engaging an audience would form my foundation. From there, I could leverage that audience for speaking gigs, consulting leads, and more.

The takeaway from this week is clear: successful people pick a lane. They tackle one thing at a time, building a strong foundation before moving to the next big idea. While my brain fights this notion, I hope this newsletter serves as a reminder to myself—and to you—that staying the course is essential.

Want More?

This article emphasizes the critical role of early development in establishing a strong foundation for future success. It discusses how focusing on foundational skills during the early years can lead to better outcomes in later life.

This piece argues that embracing multiple interests can lead to creative problem-solving and a broader perspective. It suggests that having diverse passions can be more beneficial than focusing solely on one area.

This article explores the advantages of pursuing multiple hobbies, including enhanced mental health, personal growth, and creativity. It presents a case for the benefits of not limiting oneself to a single focus.

Thoughts to Leave You With

If you’re like me, stuck in a cycle of jumping from project to project, consider this a wake-up call. Maybe boredom isn’t the enemy; it’s the point where persistence begins. And those who push through are the ones who succeed. So here’s to sticking with it and seeing a project through from start to finish.

Thank you for reading, and let’s keep building, one step at a time.

Powered by beehiiv

October has arrived, and with it, the beautiful autumn weather that I’m absolutely loving. I’m still wearing shorts, much to the shock of everyone around me. But coming from Karachi, where weather like this is a rare treat, I’ll enjoy the cold as long as my body can handle it. Today, I want to share a key learning from my TEDx practice sessions that revolved around the power of feedback loops. But first…

Weekly Inventory Check

September is behind us, and whether you completed everything on your list or not, it’s time to assess. What did you achieve? What didn’t get done? And most importantly, why? Take the time to reflect honestly on your capabilities. Be kind to yourself, and ensure you’re not overloading October with leftover tasks. Make it easier for yourself to succeed by planning realistically.

The Power of Feedback

This past weekend, I had an incredible experience meeting the other TEDx speakers for our November event. We had the opportunity to practice our talks in front of each other, with coaches present, and most importantly, we received feedback. The structure was fascinating. We were empowered to ask for the kind of feedback we wanted, and everyone was entitled to share their thoughts.

But here’s the thing: not every piece of feedback applies. This realization was a breakthrough for me. I’ve always asked for feedback from everyone around me, relying on the “wisdom of the crowd” to make decisions. But this session made me understand that it’s not just about averaging everyone’s input. The context of the feedback matters.

Some feedback will be more valuable than others, depending on the giver’s understanding of the context. Are they aware of what you're aiming for? Do they see the full picture? This insight made me think deeper about the feedback I receive in all areas of life.

Additionally, being able to ask for specific types of feedback made the process feel more appropriate and productive. When you know what you want to improve, you’ll be able to filter out the less relevant opinions and focus on the insights that can actually help you grow.

Want More?

This article focuses on the importance of being open, curious, and reflective when receiving feedback, treating it as a growth opportunity rather than criticism.

Feedback loops drive continuous improvement, foster better communication, and enhance customer satisfaction by addressing specific needs and promoting engagement.

Positive feedback loops reinforce beneficial behaviors, creating cycles of success that promote personal and professional growth.

Reels of the Week

This short video highlights the alarming rise of populism and hate crimes across Europe, attributed to four main factors: political exploitation of the refugee crisis, the influence of social media in promoting fear, ingrained human biology, and the European Union's flawed approach to diversity and inclusion.

Thoughts to Leave You With

Next time you're looking to improve, get clear on what you want to work on. The first week of September has flown by, hasn’t it? Today, I want to dive into understanding and considering the context of your environment on your actions. But first…

Weekly Inventory Check

The first week of a new month is always the most exciting one. It’s a time when we’ve shaken off the dust and feel like, "This is the month! I’m going to start new things and get them done!" By now, you may have already started working on most of the things you planned. But if you haven’t, that’s a sign worth considering: Do you really want to pursue those goals? This is the time when motivation is at its peak. If you’re not feeling it now, it might be worth reconsidering. It’s okay to shift your focus to something that truly excites you.

Context Matters

This week, I had an interesting conversation with my brother about ethics in business. My brother is someone I deeply admire for his strong moral compass. As a devout Muslim, he believes in being truthful and honest in all dealings, as our faith teaches us from a young age. I, on the other hand, have a more nuanced view. I believe context plays a huge role in how we approach ethical decisions, particularly in business. Honesty and Truthfulness might not come handy when you are working with people who dont value the same principles for example.

This idea of context extends to many areas of life, including larger societal issues. I often think about this when discussing democracy. People are quick to poke holes in alternatives, but they forget to question the flaws in the existing system – the corruption, the lobbying, the way money influences governance. Why is that okay? This week has been intense for me, and it taught me something crucial: life happens, and when it does, it’s okay if it interrupts your momentum. You can’t control every situation, but you can control how you respond. I’m going to dive into this a bit more today, but first…

Weekly Inventory Check

This week wasn’t my smoothest start, and I’m sure many of you might feel the same. Often, when things don’t start perfectly, we get caught up in the belief that it’s impossible to recover and maintain momentum. But I’m here to remind you: don’t let a hiccup define your month. Reflect on what went well, identify the areas that need attention, and get back on track. Rinse and repeat.

Life Happens

This week, life threw some unexpected challenges my way. I spent five straight days traveling all over The Netherlands. As someone who thrives on structure, the constant travel disrupted my routine – my planner showed far more crosses than ticks on my daily habits, and I’ll admit, it bothered me. I liked that I was atleast consistent during weekdays so i can give myself some room on the weekends but alas.

Here’s what I realized though: it’s okay to feel frustrated, it is okay to be bothered that the streak has broken, you have been derailed or whatever metaphor you want to use to describe your daily routine and relationship with your habits. What is crucial thought is not to let that frustration lead to self-sabotage. Whether it’s indulging in sugar (if you’re fasting like me) or deciding to sleep in and miss your morning routine, resist the urge to throw in the towel. Life isn’t about an all-or-nothing mentality. Sometimes, just walking when you wanted to run is still a victory.

Life will always happen – the key is to stay the course. Even if you’re not progressing, don’t actively regress. It’s about maintaining course, not momentum. So, as this weekend wraps up, remember: you’re still moving forward, even if it feels like you’re standing still.

Want More?

This article outlines practical steps for recovering from setbacks, focusing on resilience through managing small tasks, maintaining perspective, and fostering a growth mindset.

This resource emphasizes sticking to routines even in small ways, focusing on what can be controlled, and designing an environment conducive to success. I can hardly believe it, but August has come and gone. As we step into September, I’m filled with a mix of excitement and reflection. This month marks a bit of a milestone for me – I’m venturing into something new, something I’ve never done before. I’ll be sharing my first ever scripted YouTube video, diving deep into a topic that’s been on my mind for quite some time.

Weekly Inventory Check

September is here, and with it comes the usual reflection. We’ve been at this for almost two years now, can you believe it? It’s become a bit of a ritual, hasn’t it? As you look back on August, I encourage you to think about what you’ve achieved. Did you hit the goals you set for yourself? Or did some things fall through the cracks?

I’ve been asking myself the same questions, and to be honest, some of my own goals didn’t pan out quite as I’d hoped. But that’s okay. Life, as I keep reminding myself, isn’t a race. It’s more like a leisurely walk through your neighbourhood – sometimes you stop to admire a flower or chat with a neighbour, other times you just keep moving. There’s no finish line, just the small improvements we make along the way.

Loss of Community

This week, I want to talk about something that’s been on my mind a lot lately – the loss of community and the importance of compromise. If you remember, we touched on this a few weeks ago when we discussed compromise in relationships. But this time, I want to take it a step further and look at how this idea plays out in our communities.

Let me share a little story with you. Just the other day, I was having dinner with some colleagues, and I asked them a simple question: “When was the last time you hung out with your neighbour?” The responses were almost unanimous – most of them couldn’t even remember the last time they had a meaningful interaction with the people living next door. And this wasn’t just a one-off; I’ve asked this question many times, and the answer is almost always the same.

It got me thinking – no wonder we’re all feeling so isolated. We’ve built these walls around ourselves, both literally and figuratively. We’ve become so focused on our own lives, our own needs, that we’ve forgotten how to be part of a community. Social media might give us the illusion of connection, but it’s a poor substitute for real, face-to-face interactions.

I remember when I was growing up, community meant something. We knew our neighbours, we looked out for each other, and there was a sense of belonging that you just don’t see as much today. Now, it feels like everyone is out for themselves. The idea of compromise – of giving a little bit of yourself for the greater good – seems almost foreign.

But I believe it’s not too late to turn things around. Imagine what our communities could be like if we all took a moment to reach out, to get to know the people around us, to help each other out without expecting anything in return. It doesn’t have to be anything grand – maybe it’s just saying hello to your neighbour, or offering to help someone with their groceries. It’s these small acts of kindness that can start to rebuild the sense of community we’ve lost.

Want More?

This article emphasizes how strong community ties can combat the loneliness that often accompanies old age.

This piece explores the global trend towards individualism, discussing its impact on societal structures and the decline of community-oriented values.

This article examines the complexities of compromise in relationships, offering guidance on when it's beneficial to concede and when it's crucial to maintain personal boundaries.

Podcast of the Week

This week, I’m excited to present my first ever scripted video, where I’ll be discussing the concept of individuality and the loss of community in Europe. Through extensive research, I’ve uncovered a lot of data and surveys that highlight a troubling trend: the rise of loneliness and the decline of community spirit across Europe.

Thoughts to Leave You With

As we step into September, I challenge you – and myself – to make a small but meaningful difference in your community. Think about it: what if each of us reached out to just one neighbour, started one conversation, or offered one small act of kindness? These little moments can add up to something much bigger – the rebuilding of our communities.

So here’s my invitation to you: this week, take the first step. Knock on a neighbour’s door, organize a small gathering, or simply introduce yourself to someone you pass by every day. Let’s break down the walls of isolation and start building bridges of connection.

And don’t keep it to yourself! Share your experiences, your successes, and even your challenges. Reply to this newsletter or post on social media with the hashtag #TheWeeklyVasl.

Remember, it’s not just about living your life – it’s about enriching the lives of those around you. Let’s make this month one where we all come together, step by step, to create the kind of communities we want to be part of.

Powered by beehiiv

August is almost over, and it feels like another month just blew by. Time seems to be moving faster than ever before, and it's making me more aware of the fleeting moments, especially as I watch my little one grow and change every day. It's a reminder that even though the big milestones may still be years away, time doesn't wait.

Weekly Inventory Check

As we approach the end of August, it's a perfect moment for a weekly inventory check. This is the last week of the month, so take some time to reflect on what you've achieved so far. Are you on track with your goals? Did you overcommit, or perhaps you're underperforming in some areas? Asking yourself these questions can help you understand the lessons from this month and guide you in making adjustments as you move into the next.

Behind the Scenes: My TEDx Journey and The Power of Accountability

This week, I had the opportunity to meet with my TEDx coach, which was both enlightening and challenging in the best possible way. The focus of our session wasn't just on content but also on presentation and storytelling. TEDx is all about making a strong impact in a short time, so mastering the art of clear and engaging communication is crucial.

One of the most valuable aspects of this experience has been working with my coach as an accountability partner. She has helped me distill my broad ideas into a coherent outline, which has been a breakthrough for me. It was fascinating to see how all my interests—individuality, democracy, critical thinking, and media—are interconnected and form the core of my TEDx talk.

What I love most about this process is how my coach has echoed back my thoughts, often revealing insights I hadn't considered. For instance, we discussed how coming from two different countries with vastly different democratic processes gives me a unique perspective. This realization was profound, as it made me aware of how unique my story is and only I can share that story.

This experience has reinforced the importance of seeking outside perspectives. No matter how well you think you know your project, having someone challenge your ideas can add immense value. I'm excited to continue this journey with my coach and can't wait to share more about my TEDx experience with you all.

Podcast of the Week

This week’s podcast features a fascinating conversation with Jonche, a regular at our philosophy circle here in Eindhoven. What truly surprised me was how much Jonche's mindset mirrors my own—a powerful reminder that sometimes we find reflections of ourselves in others, even when we least expect it.

Thoughts to Leave You With

As we wrap up August, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on your own goals and progress. As August unfolds, it's a great time to reflect on our progress and set new goals. This month, we're exploring the balance between individuality and community, focusing on how compromise plays a crucial role in both personal relationships and societal interactions.

Weekly Inventory Check

With the middle of August upon us, review your goals and achievements from July. Reflect on what worked and what didn’t, and strategize for the rest of the month. By evaluating your progress, you can enhance your critical thinking and decision-making abilities, ensuring you stay on track with your personal growth and development.

The Power of Compromise: Strengthening Relationships and Communities

In a world where individuality is often championed above all, the concept of compromise can sometimes seem like a relic of the past. Modern Western values, with their focus on personal liberty and self-expression, have empowered many to live authentically and pursue their unique paths. But as we celebrate these freedoms, it’s worth pausing to consider what might be lost along the way—particularly the vital role that emphasis on compromise plays in maintaining healthy relationships and cohesive communities.

Compromise is more than just a middle ground; it’s a fundamental component of human connection. It’s the bridge that spans differences, allowing us to coexist peacefully with others whose views, needs, and experiences may differ from our own. When we choose to compromise, we’re not just conceding or giving up something—we’re investing in the well-being of our relationships and the harmony of our communities.

Consider the relationships closest to you. Whether it’s with a partner, a friend, or a family member, these connections thrive not on one person’s needs being entirely met, but on a balance of give and take. Compromise in these contexts doesn’t mean losing yourself; it means recognizing that the relationship is a shared journey where both sides contribute to its success. Without this mutual effort, even the strongest bonds can fray.

This idea extends beyond personal interactions to our broader social fabric. In our communities, compromise is what enables diverse groups to live and work together despite differing perspectives. It’s what allows a society to function smoothly, with each member making small concessions for the greater good. Without it, we risk creating environments where division and discord prevail.

A striking example of this can be seen in the experiences of expats—those who move to new countries and must navigate different cultural norms and expectations. Often, the initial inclination is to expect the new environment to adapt to one’s ways of doing things. However, successful integration into a new culture requires a willingness to compromise, to understand and embrace local customs, and to find a way to coexist harmoniously.

Similarly, in our increasingly connected world, where social media can amplify divisions, the ability to compromise becomes even more crucial. The platforms that were designed to bring us together can also push us apart, fueling polarization and misunderstanding. By engaging in thoughtful dialogue and being open to compromise, we can bridge these divides and foster a more empathetic and cohesive online community.

The failure to embrace compromise has consequences that ripple through both personal relationships and society at large. In relationships, it can lead to resentment and estrangement. In communities, it can contribute to social unrest and division. But by choosing to compromise, we can build stronger connections, reduce conflict, and create environments where everyone feels valued and understood.

In this context, compromise is not a sign of weakness or surrender; it’s a strength that demonstrates emotional intelligence and a commitment to the collective good. It’s about understanding that we don’t live in isolation—our actions and decisions affect others, and by finding common ground, we can create a better, more inclusive world.

As you reflect on your own life, consider where the power of compromise might make a difference. Is there a relationship that could benefit from a little more give and take? Is there a community issue where finding common ground could lead to a more harmonious outcome? By embracing compromise, we open the door to understanding, connection, and positive change.

Podcast of the Week

This week’s podcast features a compelling conversation with Lillian from Houston, Texas, an expat navigating life with a local partner. This week has been a mix of joy and reflection for me. On one hand, I enjoyed celebrating a milestone in my friend's life—his little one just turned one! Seeing our children play together, laughing and enjoying each other’s company, reminded me of the beauty of community and connection. On the other hand, recent events have prompted me to think deeply about how our worldviews shape not just our perceptions but also our actions, both publicly and privately.

Weekly Inventory Check

Before we dive into the heavier topics, let's touch on something positive. August is well underway, and our accountability group is progressing. We’ve all been working hard to meet the objectives we established at the beginning of the month. One friend mentioned feeling so confident in his progress that he wondered if he even needed to keep posting updates. But I reminded him—and I’m reminding all of us—that sharing our journey is about more than just keeping ourselves on track. It’s also about motivating those around us. When you post your progress, you’re saying to others, "If I can do it, so can you." So let’s keep the momentum going, celebrate our wins, and encourage one another to stay committed.

Worldviews: The Lens Through Which We See the World

Now, let’s delve into the main topic of this week’s podcast: worldviews. A worldview is like a lens through which we interpret everything around us. It’s influenced by our upbringing, culture, experiences, and the information we consume. It’s the filter through which all our beliefs, ideas, and actions pass. And while we might think we’re open-minded and able to see things from different perspectives, the truth is, our worldview often limits us.

In our podcast, Mudassir and I explore how these deeply ingrained perspectives can create disparities in our community. We discuss how social media impacts the way we perceive the world, often reinforcing our existing beliefs rather than challenging them. This phenomenon is known as confirmation bias, and it’s a significant factor in why people struggle to change their worldviews.

Social media has become one of the most influential platforms in shaping our worldviews. With algorithms designed to show us content that aligns with our interests and beliefs, it’s easy to get trapped in an echo chamber where our views are constantly validated and rarely challenged. This can lead to a narrow understanding of the world, where we only see things from a single viewpoint—our own.

The recent events in the UK provide a stark example of how social media can fuel division and hatred. When news broke about the tragic killing of three children, misinformation quickly spread online, falsely claiming that the perpetrator was a Muslim. This led to a wave of online hate speech and violence against people of color, particularly Muslims, in the UK. The real tragedy here was not just the loss of innocent lives, but also the social unrest that followed, driven by false narratives and deep-seated prejudices.

As we navigate the complexities of the online world, it is vital to take responsibility for our actions and the impact they create on others. This week, I encourage you to be mindful of the content you share and the conversations you engage in online. Let’s commit to combating hate speech, misinformation, and discrimination by promoting dialogue, understanding, and empathy.

It’s easy to feel powerless in the face of global issues, but change starts with small actions. By being more intentional about the way we use social media, we can create a more inclusive online environment—one that values truth, respects differences, and fosters understanding.

Podcast of the Week

This week’s stitch is with one of the regulars, Muddasir. Our podcast delves into strategies for violence prevention, emphasizing the importance of fostering empathy and compassion, both online and offline. We discuss how understanding different perspectives can help us overcome prejudice and build more inclusive communities. It’s about creating an environment where diversity is celebrated and wherein differences are seen as strengths rather than threats.

Thoughts to Leave You With

This newsletter touches on some difficult topics, and I hope I’ve managed to tackle them with the care and respect they deserve. Our goal with this newsletter is to encourage thoughtful reflection and meaningful action. Let’s continue to challenge our worldviews, seek out new perspectives, and above all, stay kind and compassionate.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Maybe August will bring us a delayed summer.

Today, I want to delve into creating boundaries and the influence of culture. But first…

Weekly Inventory Check

The 28th of July means that July has unofficially ended. If there’s anything you can do in the next three days, do it; the rest needs to be shifted to next month’s bucket. Reflect on your open items and why they remain incomplete. I've realized that we often want to do a lot of things, but in reality, we don't. We just believe we do. So, like a broken record, prioritize what's important and cut out the rest.

Boundaries and Balance

This week, I had a thought-provoking discussion with my friend Muddasir about boundaries. We reviewed an article that identified numerous types of boundaries—10, 15, even 20. This made me question how boundaries fit into our era of heightened individuality. While we’re encouraged to protect ourselves, this self-protection can sometimes hinder collaboration and empathy.

Historically, society has progressed through the agricultural, industrial, and technological revolutions, each emphasizing collaboration and mutual support. However, increasing income inequality has shifted many people’s focuses towards self-interest, rather than collective benefit. This shift presents a problem: if everyone is solely concerned with their own needs, relationships and societal functions can deteriorate.

Current discussions often suggest that we need boundaries for every aspect of our lives to ensure personal protection. While boundaries are important, they aren’t a cure-all. We shouldn’t focus solely on self-preservation; we should also strive to give more than we take and build supportive relationships.

In our age of technological overload and social media, boundaries should address systemic issues and our psychological biases. For example, limiting social media use can help counteract the negative effects of constant comparison. Additionally, setting boundaries with those who spread negativity or adhere to harmful beliefs is crucial for maintaining our mental well-being.

Ultimately, boundaries should help us navigate modern complexities without falling into self-centered isolation. We need to balance protecting our individuality with contributing to societal progress. The goal is to find a middle ground where we move forward together, ensuring that self-protection doesn’t come at the expense of collective well-being.

Want More?

1. This must have come across your mind that usually the concept of Individuality usually presides in the West culture, whereas on the Eastern side of the globe they are more inclined towards collectivism. The notion of individuality carries merit when it fosters self-reflection and personal growth. However, if this perspective becomes pervasive to the extent that personal interests consistently take precedence in every scenario, it can give rise to a society where mutual care and consideration wane. Such an environment may lead to a decline in societal empathy, where individuals prioritize their needs exclusively, potentially resulting in a community where the ethos of compassion diminishes. Therefore, while both collectivism and individualism have their virtues, when taken to extremes, they can instigate inherent issues that permeate a significant portion of society.

Instagram post

The Weekly Vasl Podcast

Our episode on Do you know your boundaries well enough? is out now. It’s going to be a very short summer because, for the last few weeks, it's been raining and the temperature has stayed under 20 degrees, so it didn't really feel like summer. Personally, I'm excited for a short summer because I don’t enjoy the sun as much as others. Maybe that’s because I spent most of my life under the scorching sun in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

Today, I want to talk about work ethics and work culture. But first, let's dive into our weekly inventory check.

Weekly Inventory Check

This is almost the last week of July, with about 10 days left. I want to ensure that you have a clear idea of what you really want to achieve this month and a clear prioritization of what you need to deliver. People often overcommit to many things and spread their focus thin. While some thrive in multitasking, most don’t, and even those who do are not working optimally. So, I encourage you to focus on one thing you want to accomplish first before moving on to the next.

The Hustle Dilemma

I've been pondering over the concept of hustle culture for a while now. I’ve written a couple of newsletters on it, and I’m still confused by it. What confuses me is how rewarding it feels even when you're not seeing tangible results.

Take my example: right now, I’m hustling and bustling, but I don’t have much to show for it yet. I haven’t made money off this endeavor. I’m building my presence and ideas, which will take time. On the side, I’m doing other things I enjoy that also don’t make money. When I tell people about all these projects, they don’t criticize the lack of immediate results. Instead, they celebrate the effort and hustle.

This week, I had a conversation with Stefan about quiet quitting. We discussed how it differs from working in the US and Europe. He mentioned something fascinating: he said our work culture still operates as if we’re in a state of war. Subconsciously, we act as if we must deliver more for our company or country to survive. This fight-or-flight response keeps us hustling, even when we don’t need to live that way anymore.

I need to learn more to understand why we do this and become more aware. It's something for you to think about as well. Why do we maintain this war-like work culture? Is it a leftover from the manufacturing world where hours worked mattered more than output? Now, it’s all about output, but some people still feel the need to stay busy without delivering meaningful results.

I’m curious about your thoughts on this. Why do you think we have the work culture we do? How do you navigate it? Send me your thoughts—I read every reply. This is part of our journey to becoming more aware of our actions and motivations as humans.

Want More?

Discover the pitfalls of hustle culture and find a balanced approach in 'The Hustle Lie: Confessions of a Reformed Workaholic.'

Explore the toxic side of hustle culture and how it can sabotage success in 'The Poisonous Antidote to Success: The Hustle Culture.'

Reimagine productivity and challenge the norms of hustle culture in 'Rethinking Productivity and the Hustle Culture.'

Reel of the Week

Check this out! This Friday, I was joined by my good friend Stefan, whom I met during one of our philosophical group sessions. As members of the corporate world, Stefan and I are no strangers to the concept of 'quiet quitting.' This phenomenon has become increasingly prevalent and can no longer be ignored in any office environment. Many employees experience this dilemma silently, without discussing it openly. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, quiet quitting was relatively uncommon. However, the term gained traction in 2022, particularly amongst Gen Z, as the pandemic triggered 'The Great Resignation.' It's clear that quiet quitting emerged as a silent trend during this period of significant workplace change. Join us as we delve into this topic and explore its implications in today's corporate landscape.

Thoughts to Leave You With

As we navigate our work culture and ethics, consider this: Is our drive for constant hustle a remnant of outdated survival instincts, or is it a reflection of our true ambitions and values? As we reflect on recent events like the US Fourth of July celebrations and the significant British elections that saw a shift after 14 years of conservative rule, I'm excited to delve into some intriguing discussions. But first, let's share a quick weekly update.

Weekly Inventory Check

This summer has been uniquely productive for me. With the sun shining and a refreshing coolness in the air, it's the perfect setting for achieving my goals and staying upbeat. Have you found a particular time or season that brings out your best self?

Perspectives on Democracy and Media Integrity

Recently, I had a thought-provoking conversation with a guest well-versed in US politics. We discussed the crucial issue of voter participation and democracy's health. One key takeaway resonated deeply: simply increasing voter turnout isn't enough if people lack access to accurate information. Misinformation breeds fear, which can sway even the most well-intentioned voters.

I used to believe that if everyone voted, we could prevent populist movements from gaining traction. However, the reality is more nuanced. Every media outlet has an agenda and bias, and we must be aware of and minimize these influences as much as possible. Ensuring free access to unbiased information is vital yet challenging. Whether from state media, free media, or social platforms, the challenge lies in discerning truth from bias.

Transparency and accountability are essential. I believe media should uphold these values—updating information transparently, admitting mistakes, and avoiding biases. This integrity builds trust and empowers informed decision-making in a democratic society.

Reflecting on our democratic principles, I propose adding a fourth pillar: independent media integrity. In addition to the judiciary, executive, and legislative branches, media literacy and integrity can safeguard against unchecked power and ensure a robust democracy.

For deeper insights into the media's role in democracy, check out our podcast episode with Russell. Today, I want to delve into the art of acting on incomplete information, but before as we do every single time, let's take an inventory check.

Weekly Inventory Check

June will be officially finished today, and I want you to reflect on what you have accomplished this month. Consider what can be improved and what cannot. It's been more than a year since we started this exercise, and I hope it has been as valuable to you as it has been to me. For me, it's been an amazing journey, continually looking for ways to improve and reflecting on my progress.

Now, on to the topic of the day:

Embracing the Art of Acting on Incomplete Information

This week, William, my friend and I discussed this concept in depth. William believes that perfect information is impossible to obtain, and I wholeheartedly agree. While incomplete information is challenging to get, the real struggle lies in the desire for more and more data before deciding.

In my work with data, I often encounter this issue. Everyone wants absolute clarity before deciding, but sometimes, we will never have complete information. Data can be limited and even skewed, making it difficult to know if the information we have is accurate.

A prime example of acting on incomplete information is the government. We often criticize governments for not handling situations correctly, assuming it's easy to manage a large population. However, governments operate daily on incomplete information, constantly balancing trade-offs between waiting for more data and making timely decisions.

Organizations face similar challenges. Setting up a robust data infrastructure takes time, and the results are not immediate. Yet, organizations often want instant answers on how to improve. It's a delicate balance between waiting for more information and deciding with the data at hand.

I want to emphasize that you will never have complete information. The key is to act on the information you have, with a well-thought-out decision-making process. This doesn't mean making impulsive decisions but finding a balance between thorough research and timely action. At some point, you must make a decision.

Want More?

· Explore strategies for navigating decision-making with incomplete information in startup environments: Acting with Incomplete Information in a Startup.

· "Discover practical tips for effectively working with incomplete information: Working with Incomplete Information

· Explore strategies for making decisions amidst uncertainty and incomplete evidence: Uncertainty: Making Decisions Without All the Evidence

Reel of the Week

Check this out! The 5 Second Rule is a concept introduced by motivational speaker and author Mel Robbins. It suggests that when you have an instinct to act on a goal or make a decision, you must physically move or take action within five seconds. The idea is that if you hesitate longer than five seconds, your brain may talk you out of it, leading to inaction. The rule is a simple and effective tool to overcome procrastination and self-doubt by encouraging immediate action.

Instagram post

The Weekly Vasl Podcast

Our episode on Starting with something new with the limited knowledge, is it good or bad? is out now. Greetings from Bordeaux, where our journey is winding down with Paris as our final stop. We're here celebrating my wife's friend's birthday, reconnecting with old friends, and enjoying the bliss of these moments that transcend distance. Today, I want to delve into positive psychology, particularly in the context of work, and discuss how some find themselves unhappy in their careers, and what we can do about it. But first, let's take stock with our weekly inventory check.

Weekly Inventory Check

As we near the end of the month, it's time for reflection. What did we accomplish? What falls short? How can we improve next month? Let's delve deep to understand our motivations and set clear intentions for the future.

Embracing Balance

Throughout my career, I've viewed that working eight hours a day serves as a means to fully enjoy and make the most of the remaining sixteen hours. Mental health and well-being were distant concerns; work was work, and that was that. However, the pervasive hustle culture that I have also talked about a lot in my previous newsletters has begun to seep into our lives, creating unnecessary stress and impacting mental health.

I firmly believe that productivity and efficiency within designated work hours (typically eight hours) should suffice. The pressure to constantly exceed expectations and climb the corporate ladder often leads to burnout. There will always be work; it's an inevitable part of professional life. Recognizing this can empower us to prioritize our health and well-being without guilt.

From my experience as a consultant, I have observed that many people feel overwhelmed by the amount of work they have. It's important to recognize that work will always be present. Whether you open your laptop tomorrow or a week from now, there will always be a plethora of tasks waiting for you. The business remains unfinished and that’s how it’s supposed to be.

Ultimately, achieving peace of mind doesn't always mean chasing greater wealth or career advancement. It's about making conscious choices that align with our values and well-being. We have more control over our stress levels than we realize; it begins with awareness and making intentional decisions.

Want More?

1. I'm here on a road trip with my family, celebrating my little daughter's upcoming first birthday.

Weekly Inventory Check

Half of June has passed, and as we always emphasize take stock, evaluate what's working, what isn't, and most importantly, why. Understanding the 'why' is crucial—it provides deeper insights into our actions. So, rather than focusing solely on 'what' needs to be done, prioritize understanding 'why' and how it aligns with your goals for this month.

Reflections on Fatherhood

Today, I want to talk about Father's Day, which is today, and my experience of it. It’s my first-ever Father's Day, and I have no idea how to deal with it. My wife has been nothing short of cute with her planning. I was blindfolded, and a lot of gifts were tried on me in terms of accessories for my hands, neck, and fingers. These were my wife's gifts for me, and she didn't want me to see them before Father's Day. Right now, as we speak, the gift is in the car in the back seat, and I’m not allowed to look at it. She said once we are together in the evening for dinner, she will give me the gift.

This whole journey was nothing short of amazing. Whenever someone asks me how I would describe fatherhood, I say it's amazing, annoying, frustrating, a blessing—it’s everything all at once. That's what parenting is in general. You have this little creature in your hands who is your everything, but at certain points, you just want to put yourself first. That delicate balance is what parenting is all about.

As a father, things change over time. We are not the sole breadwinner of the house anymore and that is not our identity. Now, it makes much more sense to be more involved than just providing a paycheck. I'm actively changing diapers, taking care of my daughter, making her sleep, feeding her, and playing with her. It’s not like I don't like what I'm doing—I think it's a lot of fun. It's amazing to spend so much time with my daughter, have my morning routines with her, and enjoy moments like doing yoga together or taking walks while she’s in a carry-on.

At the end of the day, a father desires what every parent does: for their child, who looks up to them, to embody their best qualities, improve upon them, and ultimately become a better person. On Father's Day, this is my wish for myself and for all fathers and parents. Parenthood means nurturing a new generation to be better versions of ourselves, contributing to a better world for everyone.

Enjoy your week, and happy Father's Day to all the dads out there!

Want More?

If you're interested in learning about the habits and tools that successful people use, check out these articles:

· Check out this heartfelt piece on being a "girl dad" and the unique joys and challenges it brings: Fatherhood.

· Explore the surprising history behind why we celebrate Father's Day: The Surprising History of Why We Celebrate Father's Day.

· Reflect on the significance of Father's Day and its personal impact: Father's Day: A Reflection.

Reel of the Week

Check this out! Even my routine is getting more structured as it’s easier to get up in the morning now. Today, I want to talk about shortcuts to success and the various projects I’m working on and why I’m trying them.

But first, let's do our weekly inventory check.

Weekly Inventory Check

May has ended, and you know what we do here at Vasl. We take an inventory, check what worked for the month, and review our goals. It's important to prioritize and anchor yourself with long-term plans. While long-term plans can feel boring, they provide direction. Without them, you might find yourself sidetracking, constantly improving short-term goals without ever reaching the big picture.

Now, on to the topic:

Shortcuts to Success

Right now, I'm juggling multiple projects: building an AI tool startup, organizing a streaming tournament with friends, maintaining a podcast, writing a weekly newsletter, and growing my digital presence. Plus, I have a full-time job and fatherhood responsibilities. Why am I sharing all this? Because I’m hoping one of these projects will hit and lead to success, which I can then leverage for more success.

When you see someone online who seems to have made it overnight, it can look like a shortcut. But I genuinely believe that shortcuts to success are mostly lies. While luck can play a role, and sometimes a shortcut does appear, it’s not something you can rely on.

Consider the example of entrepreneurs who thrived during COVID by selling masks. They seized an opportunity, but they also got lucky. This doesn’t diminish their hard work and entrepreneurial spirit, but it highlights that luck and opportunity often play a part in success.

However, chasing shortcuts for the sake of shortcuts is a flawed strategy. My friend and I have tried forex trading for almost a decade, hoping for quick success. Yet, we’ve learned that foundational work and perseverance are key. Chasing short-term success leads to failure if you’re not prepared to put in the work and build a solid foundation.

Control what you can: your effort, your output, and your commitment to improvement. Whether success comes quickly or gradually, focus on doing your best and letting the rest follow.

Want More?

1.Taking the long way, with perseverance and dedication, is the true shortcut to lasting success. Read more.

2.True success requires perseverance and hard work, without shortcuts. Read more.

3. It's essential to consider the potential ripple effects of our actions on our future, as hasty choices might lead to unforeseen challenges or missed opportunities down the road. When viewed positively, luck complements the effort and determination we put into our endeavors. I also reflected on how our generation has evolved compared to our parents and grandparents. He just came back last week, and we've been meeting a lot since he's only here for a few days. It's been a lot of fun. I haven't had these late nights out in a long time since having a child, because your priorities change, of course. But when a friend of so many years visits for a few days, I thought it was a good time to take a break from fatherhood and have some friend time. And it was a lot of fun. I really, really enjoyed it. Now I'm walking back to my family, who I've missed because I haven't seen them all day, and I cannot wait to see them. But first, let's have our weekly inventory check.

Weekly Inventory Check

May is ending, and you know what we do here at Vasl every single time: we take an inventory, check what worked for the month of May, review our goals, and understand where things might be going wrong. Prioritize, prioritize, prioritize. I don't say this every time just to make you feel like it's something you can ignore. The best way to build accountability is to start writing things down. This has changed my life since I started writing down my daily plan and my biggest action item for the day. When you cross that item off your list, you get a big dopamine hit that makes you feel accomplished. It helps you tackle other things as well.

Now, onto today's topic: mental masturbation.

Mental Masturbation

Mental masturbation means talking about things you want to do and getting a dopamine hit without doing anything. It's a lot of talking and no action, and you can imagine why this is a problem. I think this problem stems from how our society is structured. If you've been following me for a long time, you know I don't look at issues individually but holistically. So, when I see mental masturbation, I see it as a product of our system, much like addiction or laziness.

We've created a system where we crave dopamine constantly. With social media, it's easy to get a dopamine hit from a new tweet, notification, or message. This makes us dopamine addicts, craving our hits at any cost. The point isn't that talking about your goals is bad. In fact, it's great for building accountability. We have a WhatsApp group where we share our monthly goals and give weekly updates, which helps us stay on track. The difference between that and mental masturbation is having people around you who will hold you accountable.

Our system often rewards big talk without follow-through. To counter this, surround yourself with people who will hold you accountable. Next time you have big plans, tell someone you trust who will check in on your progress. This feedback loop will help you realize when you're just talking without action.

Most people aren't aware of these actions because, like addicts, they just want dopamine to hit. Building accountability makes you aware of your behavior. Find one person in your network who wants the best for you and ask them to hold you accountable. The first few conversations will be difficult, but over time, you'll start understanding the importance of not letting them down. This externalizes the problem and helps you stick to your goals.

Want More?

For further reading on the topic of luck and opportunity, check out these articles:

· Learn how to avoid the pitfalls of mental masturbation and turn your talk into action.

· Understand the concept of mental masturbation and how it impacts your productivity and mindset.

· Discover ways to stop mental masturbation and start taking real action towards your goals.

Reel of the Week

Check this out!

Transform your aspirations into achievements by putting pen to paper. As May comes to a close, I'm thrilled to share that a very good friend of mine is visiting next week. I'm excited about the time we'll spend together and the adventures we'll have. Today, let's dive into an intriguing topic: the concept of luck. But first, a quick inventory check as we wrap up May.

Weekly Inventory Check

With May ending, it's the perfect time to tie up loose ends and reflect on your goals. Remember, prioritization is key. If you keep adding tasks without setting priorities, you'll end up overwhelmed. Focus on what's truly important and let go of the rest.

Crafting Your Own Luck

Luck: is it merely a mental construct? I recently encountered the idea that luck favors those who are extroverted, optimistic, and open to opportunities. The argument is that these traits lead to better outcomes, supported by research showing that people who adopt these behaviours often feel luckier and experience more success.

I resonate with this premise. Life indeed opens more doors for those who knock persistently. It's a bit like the law of large numbers: the more you try, the more likely you are to succeed.

A story from my wife's family illustrates this well. One individual, an entrepreneur, faced repeated failures and mounting debt. Then, the pandemic hit. For many, it was disastrous, but for him, it was an opportunity. His venture, selling masks, thrived, and he became highly successful. You could say he was lucky, but his relentless hustle played a crucial role.

This brings me to a nuanced view of luck. While luck can be a factor, it often intersects with persistent effort and resilience. Luck didn't just fall into his lap; it was the result of continuous effort and seizing the right opportunity at the right time.

I believe in controlling what you can and not worrying about what you can't, a perspective rooted in Stoicism. Focus on your ethics, drive, and integrity. Do your best, and if luck gives you an extra push, great. If not, keep going and let the law of large numbers play out.

Want More?

For more insights on the interplay between luck, effort, and success, check out these resources:

1. Learn how to scientifically create and seize opportunities with 'Crafting Your Own Luck' by Nick Richtsmeier on Medium.

2. Explore the concept that luck is a mental construct in Anand Damani's insightful blog post.

3. Delve into how luck influences every aspect of life in Jay Sebastian's thought-provoking article.

Reel of the Week

Check this out!

A fixed mindset limits personal growth because it believes abilities and traits are fixed, leading to avoidance of challenges, giving up easily, seeing effort as fruitless, ignoring useful feedback, and feeling threatened by others' success. You can watch it below. This week, William and I were back with an exciting and thought-provoking discussion. This time, we dived into a topic that resonates with many of us: the delicate balance between enjoying our hobbies and turning them into a source of income. We all know that hobbies keep us engaged and happy, often providing a much-needed escape from our daily routines. The idea of capitalizing on these passions might seem brilliant at first— imagine doing what you love and getting paid for it! However, we realized that commodifying personal interests can come with its own set of challenges. Turning your hobby into a business means your once-relaxing pastime could become a source of stress and pressure, leaving you with little for personal enjoyment. Join us as we explore the nuanced reality of this topic, shedding light on an issue that is rarely discussed.

Thoughts to Leave You With

As we navigate our paths, let's focus on what we can control—our actions, our resilience, and our integrity.
