I slowed down around mile 8 and had to stop a couple times at the water stations. It was brutal.</p><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="reality-self"><b>Reality & Self</b></h1><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I love racing. I probably loved it since I was five. I love it more than ever after getting my butt kicked. It is fundamental to me physically and spiritually.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The feeling of being out there on my own and giving everything I got to see what I got. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It is all signal, it is all truth and it is a portal to self-definition and improvement.</p><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="planning"><b>Planning</b></h1><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Excuses are a reflection of a defensive mindset so I am not going there. I have a fair idea of the things I need to improve so I will focus on planning. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">1. I gotta race more. I’m signing up for a half for next October. I need to run them more often than every 3 or 4 years. I might even do one in May & then October.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">2.  I’m going to do more long runs over the winter. And some of those will be longer AND faster runs over the winter, spring and summer. I want my body to be more used to racing this distance.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">3. I am honing my electrolytes & hydration game. I have been especially slack on the electrolytes. I still think it’s kinda bullshit but I am the chief scientist & the sole subject of this most important continuous experiment. So I will pay more attention to what elite racers do and then experiment more intentionally on myself.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">4. I need a good watch. I am not a fan of watches and so I have just used an old one to train. I need a good one with larger and more flexible displays so I’ll embrace the tech for training and racing purposes despite my misgivings.</p><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="process"><b>Process</b></h1><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I am modeling my process here like this,</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Failure As Signal &gt; Reality Testing &gt; Planning &gt; Action</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This was a valuable exercise so I shared it here.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Have a great weekend everybody.</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=bd0c9a99-41e8-47c8-8cc1-b0e755891254&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=pearl_s_prime_cuts">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

We had a good meal I think, started getting high and drunk before the show, and then we kept partying like we were the rocking horse winner.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">After the show we went back to my buddy’s condo and kept partying on the roof. Bong hits and cold beers.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">At some point I fell down and hit the back of my head hard. I blacked out and the next thing I remember I was telling paramedics that I didn’t need to go to the ER.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I think they made me sign something not to go.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That was six years ago today on August 6 2019.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I haven’t had alcohol or drugs since which has been great because my life is the best it has ever been. It’s funny how bad things can turn out to be good things.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I already knew that I wasn’t able to handle the partying the way I used to. I was out in Sonoma a month or two earlier and passed out drinking wine but there was a comfortable couch to fall into.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">At first I didn&#39;t tell this story because I was ashamed about it and then after a while I just didn&#39;t think about it that much anymore but a few people have asked me about the last time I used and so that&#39;s the story.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It was like the 20th time I quit and it finally stuck so if you are trying, do not give up if you fail. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If you think you might have a problem with drugs or alcohol, I recommend making an effort to quit today. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The Anonymous programs are very good and they are everywhere or if you’re not sure what to do just reply to this email with a little bit about what’s going on and I will give you the best feedback I can.</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=6466f79a-c9bb-4714-a0fe-2114d93ed205&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=pearl_s_prime_cuts">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

</style><div class='beehiiv__body'><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">There is an art to quitting. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I know this is true from my own experiences but it is a little tricky to describe.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It is not about research. It is not about discipline or willpower or dedication. It is not about thoughts or feelings or behaviors. It is not about gradual habit reformation or sudden habit reformation for that matter.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">All of these things are good. All of these things are fine.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">But I am not talking about the science of quitting or the brute force of quitting or the psychology of quitting or the habitualization of quitting.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I am talking about the art of quitting.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">And this is the trickiest thing about quitting to talk about because it can be elusive like the artistic process can be elusive.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Maybe it’s just the thing itself, <i>dumb as old medallions to the thumb</i>, like MacLeish on <a class="link" href="https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poetrymagazine/poems/17168/ars-poetica?utm_source=primecuts.philpearlman.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=the-art-of-quitting" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">what good art should be</a>.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The art of quitting is about letting go.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">There, I said it. I am just making this up so maybe there will be more at some point or maybe less.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i><b>1. It is not optimized</b></i>. I don’t want to be optimized. I am not training for the Olympics. I am training to feel great and stay healthy for longer. I am training to sustain the training.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i><b>2. It stays fun.</b></i> Some days I will go for a swim or go for a hike or row or do a pull up challenge with my kids instead of doing something that <i>I should </i>do.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I don’t care. I would rather just enjoy the whole thing.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i><b>3. You have to have a clue.</b></i> You probably have to already have an idea what you are doing. I’ve run a few of these before. I’ve been running a lot and have a good base. I am already in tune with how my body feels and when I need to rest. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If this was my first race, maybe I would need to be more structured.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i><b>4. Tuning Body and Spirit. </b></i>VibeTraining promotes being tuned into my body and spirit. This one is huge. When I wake up in the morning, I notice how I feel and then everything else falls into place. Sometimes I just take a day off. Sometimes I go harder than you’d think because I just feel great.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It is inside out, not outside in.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i><b>5. Don&#39;t get injured. </b></i>Since I am riffing off how I feel rather than a protocol, there is much less chance that I will get injured. A lot of times, people get injured because they train too hard and ignore the signals their bodies are sending them. If the protocol says long run, they do it even though maybe they pulled something the day before.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If I wake up one morning and notice a tweak in my leg, I’ll take the day. No big deal.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i><b>6. There is still some structure. </b></i>Even though there is much less structure than with a strict protocol, there still is some structure. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I am going to do longer and longer runs most Sunday mornings leading up to the week before the race. That’s structure. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I’m still going to eat clean and go to bed early. That’s structure.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I am still going to taper the week leading into the race. That’s structure.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Have a great day everybody!</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=842695bf-b90d-4bda-b465-a7ef61a22fd7&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=pearl_s_prime_cuts">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

The friend asked, “What should I do about my stocks?” Morgan replied, “Sell down to the sleeping point.”</i></span></h1><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That’s it. That’s the whole thing. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Right now, today, decide where your sleeping point might be and then position yourself accordingly.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Years ago, after reading this, I went with 65-70% invested in low cost broad market ETFs for my long-term accounts.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That way, if stocks fall 20%, I’m down 12 MAYBE 13% given that my cash position is earning 4-5%. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I can sleep with that.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Three additional points:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">1.  This not only improves your ability to sleep at night during the volatile times, but it also improves decision making during these periods. You will be much less likely to panic sell at the bottom.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">2.  A lot of advisors are reading this and so if you are one you might want to recall which of your clients were most anxious during the recent turbulence and reach out to help them rebalance.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">3. This is as much a post about self care and wellness as it is about the stock market. When you experience a lot of stress or if you are having difficulty sleeping, it negatively affects your health in more ways than you might imagine.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It might affect your body weight, nutrition, mood, exercise regimen, attention span, relationships etc…</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=567d7fd1-9e76-4545-9df8-e6188f26e4be&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=pearl_s_prime_cuts">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

The world is simple and straightforward even though we shroud it in false complexities. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This is most true when we know who we are because we can embrace reality over the fantasies or appearances we cling to when we are pretending to know things we don’t.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Stupid Simplicity Doctrine</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I decided to write this out to make it clear in my head and as a reminder if I ever lose touch with myself or begin to again think deeply about things.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I call this Stupid Simplicity Doctrine and it has four elements:</p><ol start="1"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>The universe is simple & straightforward.</i></p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>This is especially true when we know who we are.</i></p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>Complexity is mostly horseshit.</i></p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>If you drop an apple, it falls to the ground. </i></p></li></ol><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I find that anything can be broken down into four elements & stated simply in a few words.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I stole this concept from the Ancient Greeks who broke the physical universe down into four elements.</p><ol start="1"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Earth</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Air</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Fire &</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Water</p></li></ol><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">They did a great job.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I suppose if I was a chemist, I might need a longer list of physical elements, but I am not a chemist.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Four Elements of Health</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">My focus is usually health and so this was the first thing to which I applied Stupid Simplicity Doctrine.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">These are the four elements of health:</p><ol start="1"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Eat Real Food</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Move Your Body</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Prioritize Sleep & Rest</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Love Your People & Let Yourself Be Loved</p></li></ol><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That’s about it. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Sure, there are details, and you can go as deep into the weeds as you want, but if you use these elements as a compass, you will usually find your way.</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=890b1fc0-59e2-4fab-acbe-e2b989aab07f&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=pearl_s_prime_cuts">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

Some of you will be familiar.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">People partition money in their minds subjectively as a means of managing different functions and then they treat these separate mental accounts differently depending on how they are framed.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Meanwhile, and in reality, a dollar is just a dollar, no matter what pile you put it in.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The same is true in this stupid daylight savings debate.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">A minute of sunlight is just a minute of sunlight, no matter what you call it.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">On any given day of the year, you get the same amount of daylight and the same amount of night time per 24 hour period.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It’s just Mental Time Keeping.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">We humans are incredibly adaptive animals. We live and thrive at the Equator and we live and thrive in the arctic circle.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Much more important than knowing what time it says on the <i>little machines in our pockets</i>, is knowing when the sun is rising and when the sun is setting.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Get yourself outside in the morning sunlight no matter what time you call it and move your body. Then go to bed at a decent time and get some sleep at night. You will adjust to 24 hour cycles just fine.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">One last thing. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If you do have difficulty adjusting to things like a sudden one hour shift on a clock, the best thing to do is to focus on improving your health.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This might sound arbitrary, but it is not.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">As you improve your health, you become more flexible, adaptive, stress tolerant, and resilient.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">You’ll feel great and you won’t care what time it says it is.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Facts.</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=29fe31c0-8f40-490a-9002-9d6a97720fca&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=pearl_s_prime_cuts">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

</style><div class='beehiiv__body'><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Many of you reading this today are familiar with the idea of Seasonality when it comes to the stock market.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">For those not familiar, markets have seasonal tendencies that often play out but not always. For example, November through January tends to be the most bullish consecutive three month period of the year.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Here is a chart from page 149 of the 2025 Stock Trader’s Almanac owned and edited by my pal Jeff Hirsch. Jeff is the bonafide ax of stock market seasonality.</p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXf9nurQtfOX_-rLBF7tQQNUeS8D8GGO_f0E3zfolICWzr_WvrG3EvuMAQ-U-CI68J8z2O1xVWELU1bJLKTBevi0vXowTsJgnfGkP8NXA0GuVxFbLG5IEogu3fYkxAVJtAsVw-XR6g?key=VlQwlxidXFvCuThW_pLsDD_L"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">On a monthly basis and over the last 75 years, stocks average a 4.4% gain over this 3 month period. Not too shabby.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Further, it is when the market does not follow the seasonal tendency that we should really pay attention.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">There are also seasonal tendencies when it comes to body weight and we are right now entering the most bullish period of the year for weight gain.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">From Thanksgiving through New Years Day adults in the US tend to gain more weight than they gain for the entire year. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Here is a chart <a class="link" href="https://primecuts.philpearlman.com/p/the-seasonality-of-weight-gain?utm_source=primecuts.philpearlman.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=beating-seasonal-weight-gain-during-the-holidays" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">I have posted before</a> that was originally published by Helander et al in the <a class="link" href="https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc1602012?utm_source=primecuts.philpearlman.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=the-seasonality-of-weight-gain" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">New England Journal of Medicine</a> that shows the seasonal weight change tendencies over the course of the year in the US, Japan, and Germany,</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXcquBppSDqObldNlWo_gIez1N51PdsIqd03nq-rEPg9XgmK_Tvxblx2R_bwNJx0o7BZPWHh6mBcBUkM1EQGoHSl6lrY3JfDHQskbXsU8ZgD4reeQDe-OZCigeANJwG4s7odxvXF?key=VlQwlxidXFvCuThW_pLsDD_L"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Notice, in the US, how weight gain begins to increase just before Thanksgiving and runs through Christmas and into the new year.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Similar to the market commentary above, personal weight change is the most meaningful when it does not follow seasonal tendencies.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In other words, if you can keep your body weight flat or even lose a little weight during this weight gain season, then you are really onto something!</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">So, here are some tips to buck this seasonal weight gain tendency. I first published this section in a post from a couple years back called <a class="link" href="https://primecuts.philpearlman.com/p/the-seasonality-of-weight-gain?utm_source=primecuts.philpearlman.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=beating-seasonal-weight-gain-during-the-holidays" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">The Seasonality of Weight Gain</a> and I only edited it slightly...</p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="winners-average-losers"><span style="color:rgb(3, 7, 18);"><b>Winners Average Losers</b></span></h2><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXfBjxqB6mMXjsIS7LIGemO61bqIAWabmZAlMt6OBHwq1i-fHsccKVRLy-U6Yo641F0zaftnz8cAGEra0YpINn5B-AUuLf7-gEH6eL7D-NKnmbMnOhqJ-cwR_K3w0P5mdZkE8eu1?key=VlQwlxidXFvCuThW_pLsDD_L"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="color:rgb(3, 7, 18);">Legendary hedge fund manager, Paul Tudor Jones, once famously said, </span></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="color:rgb(3, 7, 18);"><i>Losers average losers.</i></span></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="color:rgb(3, 7, 18);">He was saying that losing investors buy more of a losing investment as it falls.</span></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="color:rgb(3, 7, 18);">I’m turning that one upside down. </span></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="color:rgb(3, 7, 18);">When it comes to weight, we want to do the exact opposite.</span></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="color:rgb(3, 7, 18);"><b>We want to press losers!</b></span></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="color:rgb(3, 7, 18);">So here are a few tactics that you can employ to counteract the weight gaining effects of the winter holidays?</span></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="color:rgb(3, 7, 18);">Pick and choose. I’m going to run a lot and I am going to run fast. I say this almost every year and some years I do better than others. I’m going to run a 6:30 mile and a 24 minute 5K. I am going to do this by running fast often, building explosiveness starting this winter doing plyometrics with my son, and supplementing with rowing on the Concept 2.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">2. I am going to eat clean af. Lots of animal protein, lots of hard boiled eggs, very low carbohydrates, zero alcohol, and approaching zero highly processed garbage. Whether you believe it was the hand of God or evolution or whatever that crafted us, it doesn’t matter. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">We are ever so elegantly designed.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">We can herd animals, organize societies, build bridges and skyscrapers, create and apply semiconductors, launch AI, and even <i>absorb the sea</i> as Dickinson wrote.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">And if we can imagine ourselves as technology, as I am doing here, then, undoubtedly, we sit at the top of our own technology stack, whether we are operating as an individual or as the leader of a business or other organization.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">We are the ones who are strategizing, deploying, commandeering, integrating, and decision making all of the other technologies.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In fact, there’s even some biological poetry to this whole thing for if we look at the executive functioning center of the brain it sits at the top front of the brain - the frontal cortex.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Here is another slide…</p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXft5QD4BYN_WTHpmsN9CroNzcXH-zYCnTbnkL2zWIVkYZVY9fZ30-Yb8KSvo-a8phSqfOP7AEfjFYII_xbC0eKc2XqDER7RxetSlcjCzbmWqDwLLvAvc2UeyXqENnd22khtf6S45nhgQ5rrdMMVspoMCL7p?key=u-1g_9qeKaj5eTdV7li04w"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Executive functioning is not just central to decision making. It is also critical to many other high level functions including problem solving, planning and organization, attention, and cognitive flexibility (changing our minds).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">And, as it turns out, there is a strong relationship between our health and the quality of our executive functioning. Here are two levels of proof for this assertion.</p><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="two-levels-of-proof"><span style="font-size:2rem;"><b>Two Levels of Proof</b></span></h1><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The first level of proof comes from my own experience.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I am a strong proponent of N = 1 and I like to frame it like this:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>We are the chief scientist and the sole subject of the most important continuous scientific experiment we will ever be involved with.</i></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If we try something new, like taking a walk most mornings or decreasing the amount of processed foods that we consume, and we observe that we feel better when we are doing these kinds of things, then we have some evidence right there and we know to continue these behaviors.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">So the first level of proof is our own experimentation on ourselves.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">On this level, I have found without a doubt that my decision making, planning, and attention span have improved significantly as I have improved my health over the last 5 plus years.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The Second Level of Proof backs this up…</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The research literature is filled with data suggesting that executive functioning improves as metabolic health improves.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Here is another slide from my presentation deck.</p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXe18YJ9-bKLEYmMiOp0kXypBQRhUiu5tIlf8rE6dzT3yOqI07ISE4PX-q_eYb9_wiko49ieRlAHBkEABtVseWsFq7b1usUpXgXYtiilFi1gd6cI3YbXanmoiiaH-yYhBXIOFWS95WrcIW1BuwIFYKzpRvU3?key=u-1g_9qeKaj5eTdV7li04w"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This summarizes just <a class="link" href="https://diabetesjournals.org/care/article/47/8/1415/156809/Association-of-Metabolic-Syndrome-With?utm_source=primecuts.philpearlman.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=the-monkey-at-the-top-of-your-tech-stack" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">one study with over 37,000 subjects</a>.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">By metabolic health I mean a number of health markers including body weight, muscle mass, waist size, triglycerides (fat in the blood), blood pressure, HDL cholesterol etc.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In the study cited on the above slide, notice that metabolic syndrome (or poor metabolic health) is associated with poorer cognitive functioning including executive functioning.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I could go on citing personal experience and academic research regarding multiple other areas of functioning that are critical to performance including stress tolerance, impulse control, resilience, ability to focus, but let’s just leave it at executive functioning for now as it remains the area of functioning running things - the area of functioning operating at the top of our tech stack.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Have a great day everyone and if you are at Stocktoberfest, we are doing a 3 mile beach run Monday morning at 7:30! Definitely join us!!</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=cd8c533b-9c5f-45a1-a654-cafd10e023b8&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=pearl_s_prime_cuts">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

As much as we would love to, we simply can not control price behavior.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In life, we can choose our path. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">We make decisions and behave in ways that increase our chances of positive outcomes. We can set our priorities and frame how we see the world, and so we are free to align our present and our future.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">We don’t need to choose between sacrificing our present for our future or sacrificing our future for our present. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That right there is the false paradox!</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">We can get exercise we enjoy. We don’t have to run marathons or deadlift if we don’t like it. Maybe we love tennis or cycling. We can remember what we loved to do when we were kids and do that. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">So we have fun now and improve our long-term health prospects simultaneously.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Wisdom on Multiple Time Frames Aligned!</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">We can decide to eat healthy delicious foods every single day, foods that we enjoy that are super high quality, but that also improve the probability that we will remain healthy longer.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Beef is delicious. Eggs are delicious. Berries are delicious. Fish is delish.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">We can eat these for our long term wellbeing and prepare them with love for our enjoyment now. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Wisdom on Multiple Time Frames Aligned!</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=456c357b-7665-4bf5-b3e7-c67a86346f16&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=pearl_s_prime_cuts">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

</style><div class='beehiiv__body'><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I tweak this post annually and I think it’s a strong resource for readers. This year, I’m publishing it a little earlier than usual and I think that’s an improvement too, because it gives readers more time to prepare practically and to get their mindset right too.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">For the next 50 days, we will lose more than 2 minutes of sunlight per day and it will get noticeably colder.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The colder weather and shorter days can negatively affect our health and we risk giving up some of the gains we might have made during the warmer months. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">We spend less time outdoors and in the sun, our mood and energy levels sink, and we tend to move less and gain weight.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Below, I offer practical guidance to maintain and even improve our health during the cold and dark time of the year but first a quick look at the problems…</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:2rem;"><b>Seasonal Health Risks</b></span></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="color:rgb(64, 64, 64);">Here’s a list of some of the ways our health might be negatively affected during the winter months.</span></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>1. Weight Gain</b> - <a class="link" href="https://primecuts.philpearlman.com/p/the-seasonality-of-weight-gain?utm_source=primecuts.philpearlman.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-thrive-during-the-long-cold-winter" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">As I discussed in detail here</a>, there is a seasonal component to body weight.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Slight weight gain during the winter might not be too big a deal, especially, if we are <a class="link" href="https://primecuts.philpearlman.com/p/winter-proofing-your-health-game?utm_source=primecuts.philpearlman.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-thrive-during-the-long-cold-winter" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">maintaining a trend lower</a> over a longer time frame, but if we are gaining 1-2 pounds annually, as is common in the US, winter weight gain accounts for more than all of it.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This seasonal weight change chart from the New England Journal of Medicine is wild. Have a close look…</p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXcqF50IqxYsI98ku91DvNecM0ooTAurhSsEJr7QBoVh6DmTutsdg5tjU8haMizkoS8SRr17vSm2fXLZlw3wip2ycdrrd01ZFxeW_2HGqRo4amorRNhbhJ9vpkWkl5rFHU7azA3XRlRh1u6thybtX2iT6Yl3?key=dwm0_KCnaJqiaWrNxKbcnA"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>2. Sleep</b> - We are rhythmic animals. Put your hand on your chest, feel your heart beating, and you know it’s true.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Sleep is rhythmic too and it is tied to the daily cycle of sunlight and darkness. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Sleep disruptions can have profound negative effects on how we function from our energy levels to mood and irritability to our ability to concentrate and the quality of the decisions we make.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In the winter, our sleep often suffers as we get less natural sunlight or if we are having a mood disturbance.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Speaking of which…</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>3. Mood</b> - Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that onsets during the colder months. Symptoms might include depressed emotions, low energy, insomnia or hypersomnia, and difficulties concentrating.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">People can also get a minor case of SAD that affects their quality of life, but that is not fully diagnosable. This is called subclinical SAD and it affects a lot of people. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>4. Vitamin D Deficiency.</b> - Warm sunlight is a good source of vitamin D. During the winter months, we often get less than usual. Vitamin D deficiency is already common among adults in the US with an occurance rate of over 40% and it becomes more common this time of year.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This can affect the health of our bones, the quality of our sleep, and our immune system and  our bodies’ ability to fight off everything from colds to COVID.</p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXfVW9CAydejsk0HIejF3B3cmmMl2vP0WEAugn2J-p8OKaNhZBuSVIpj0CtSMYFQDCTzrA2pST8PLUMR5gwH8_RCyJa2GemVM9mia4mZScxZuNTiBfA2TWShnVaVb2Y9-ZCn3Ws2MsrhTUwtWTZl4Z-ty78?key=dwm0_KCnaJqiaWrNxKbcnA"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>5. Losing Good Habits</b> - The winter can be a time we become vulnerable to dropping good habits that we’ve adopted during the warmer months. Maybe we were walking most mornings or biking regularly, but then we stopped because of the cold weather, holiday schedule disruptions, or low energy.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Compounding good health is a continuous long-term endeavor and so we want to maintain good health habits year round and build on them when we can. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>6. Less Nature - </b>Getting out in <a class="link" href="https://www.heart.org/en/healthy-living/healthy-lifestyle/stress-management/spend-time-in-nature-to-reduce-stress-and-anxiety?utm_source=primecuts.philpearlman.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-thrive-during-the-long-cold-winter" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">nature makes us feel better</a>. It can decrease stress, lower anxiety, dissipate depression, and help us connect to something greater than ourselves.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">During the winter, we tend to get out into nature less, which may help set the stage for feeling bad.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:1.5rem;"><b>How to Thrive Over the Winter</b></span></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Here are a bunch of things you can do to counteract health setbacks that might arise during the winter months.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Find a few that resonate with you or collect ‘em all!</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Get the Right Clothes</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.</i></p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>Either Dave Nadig or an Old Norwegian Saying</i> </p></li></ul><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If you’re going to walk, run, hike, or bike outdoors during the cold months, go out and get yourself some proper attire. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Quality hat, gloves, socks, footwear, layers, and coat.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I hit REI, which has excellent merchandise and service. You can find someone there to assist you right.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Take care of this stuff. Keep it somewhere dedicated to you and put it away securely when the weather warms. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Get the Light Right</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">When you wake up in the morning, turn the lights up high and get it nice and bright. Try to keep this around the same time most mornings, even the weekends. (If you can, get outside for a bit in the morning and let the sun hit your face.)</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In the evening, a couple hours before bed, turn the lights lower and get it good and dim. Try to keep this around the same time most nights, even the weekends. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This will help keep your body rhythm tuned, contribute to better sleep, and help stave off negative moods.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Get More Vitamin D3 </b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">As I discussed above, vitamin D supports our immune system and we don’t get enough of it, especially in the winter.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">You can get more vitamin D by eating fish (like salmon, tuna, swordfish, and sardines), eggs, and fortified dairy.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I eat plenty of these foods and take a D3 supplement during the winter months. Seems like a no brainer to help avoid getting sick.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>The 100 Day Mindset</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>This too shall pass, </i>said King Solomon.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This year, winter runs from December 21 through March 20 and lasts almost 100 days.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This is a <b>time limited</b> phenomenon. So we can explicitly frame our situation as such. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I think to myself (you can even write it down and leave it on your desk),</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>I can do anything for 100 days. I can stand on my head for 100 days. Soon, days will be getting longer again at an accelerating rate. Blink your eyes and it will be </i><a class="link" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PhqwpPcAMo&utm_source=primecuts.philpearlman.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-thrive-during-the-long-cold-winter" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Springtime Again</a><i>.</i></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I do this every year and it helps me a lot. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Reframing can be powerful and this mantra might help.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>One Healthy Thing</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I choose one health goal to work on over the winter. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This is such a strong contrarian self-gamification play! </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">While everybody else is gaining weight, I am gaining speed or back strength or working on how to prepare ribeyes in a cast iron skillet. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This year, I am working on improving strength and explosivity while bonding with my youngest son, and having some fun. We are going to do <a class="link" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plyometrics?utm_source=primecuts.philpearlman.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-thrive-during-the-long-cold-winter" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">plyometrics</a> training together. Really excited about this and we will begin once his cross country season is over in a month or so. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This will be difficult, and different and fun and I get to tap into the 10 year old me that loves nothing more than broad jumping and box jumping and the 40 yard dash! </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Treadmills Are Way Underrated</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Treadmills get a bad rap. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Critics say that you don’t get the same workout as you do out on the road or trail or that it’s boring.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It’s true, you get a different workout, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. There’s even some advantages like being able to control pace and hill resistance more precisely.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">You can get a great workout on a treadmill. Full stop.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">As long as you get a good sweat and feel good afterwards, you’re fine. Remember, it’s only 100 days!</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">As for the boredom aspect - maybe it’s somewhat more mundane, but maybe it’s not so bad either. I listen to great music and podcasts and sometimes watch tv. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">One more thing here - this section is not just about treadmills. It goes for Pelotons and rowing machines as well. In general, indoor cardio is underrated, not overrated.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Watch the Weather & Get Some Nature</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">There will be beautiful sunny days during the winter.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Keep a close eye out for them and plan your time accordingly. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Sun time is limited due to the shortened days and also the angle of the sun’s path across the sky. 10:30 to 2:30 becomes prime time for getting outside. If you do get out earlier in the morning, that’s great too.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">When you see a window of good weather approaching, prioritize the heck out of it. Put it on your calendar. Cancel or reschedule meetings, play hooky, get shit done the evening before. Whatever you gotta do!</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Then, get outside and walk, hike, or run like a freaking champion! Take your dog.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Put Your Phone in a Drawer at Night</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The mobile device wreaks havoc on our sleep-wake cycle and can affect our mood too.  </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">You want to limit usage after 8 or 8:30 PM to avoid concentrated light directly to the brain.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Put your phone in a drawer at night and don’t take it out again until 30 minutes after you wake up in the morning.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This will improve sleep and mindfulness.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In fact, putting your phone in a drawer or turning it off would be my number one habit suggestion for 2025 and not just the winter. The phone is great but it’s also poison <a class="link" href="https://primecuts.philpearlman.com/p/weekend-phone-fast-protocol-lets-go?utm_source=primecuts.philpearlman.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-thrive-during-the-long-cold-winter" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">and we all know it by now</a>. If you make it your <i>One Healthy Thing </i>described above, well, that would be a good one!</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It is my hunch that over the coming years, <a class="link" href="https://primecuts.philpearlman.com/p/weekend-phone-fast-protocol-lets-go?utm_source=primecuts.philpearlman.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-thrive-during-the-long-cold-winter" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">we will find that mobile device addiction</a>, including use at night, is much worse for our mental and physical health than even the most ardent digital minimalists currently claim.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Eat Dinner Earlier</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Finish eating for the day earlier than usual, say 7PM.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If you are already intermittent fasting, close your eating window earlier. So if you usually do a 12-8 eating window, make it 12-7 or 11-7. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This will give you more time to digest before you go to bed, makes it easier to fall asleep, and will improve your sleep quality overall.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If you are not intermittent fasting and are interested in trying it, here is a post called <a class="link" href="https://primecuts.philpearlman.com/p/getting-started-intermittent-fasting?utm_source=primecuts.philpearlman.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-thrive-during-the-long-cold-winter" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Getting Started intermittent Fasting</a>.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Remember the Basics</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Last but not least, don’t forget the basics. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">1. <a class="link" href="https://primecuts.philpearlman.com/p/what-to-eat?utm_source=primecuts.philpearlman.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-thrive-during-the-long-cold-winter" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Eat High Protein Low Carbs</a></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">2.
