How many times do you take breaks throughout the day?

Whenever my puppy needs to go to the toilet which currently seems to be every 30 mins. As much as it can be difficult it’s been a great reminder to take a break from the desk.

Where did you set up your home office and why?

We recently bought our first apartment during lockdown last year and with us both working remotely we looked for somewhere with a generous second room we could convert into an office for us both.

For years i basically had a super stripped back setup, consisting of only a MacBook and pair of headphones. I nerded on desk setups for years, however, whilst living in London at the time we knew we would be moving back to Scotland shortly and didn’t want to buy any furniture, however, this temporary wait turned into 7 years. When we eventually moved back and bought our new place i decided i was going to create my dream setup. Creating a space that you look forward to spending time in is really important to me given the amount of time i’m in-front of a screen.

How do you make/keep working remotely fun/tolerable?

I’ve been working remotely for the past 4 years and found it so easy for the most part. However, during lockdown i struggled and some serious felt cabin fever. So when lockdown eased I decided i would try a co-working space to mix it up a little. I tend to go once a week.

I also like to take advantage of working in different locations from time to time. Be that Airbnb’s, parents houses, or working with friends at their their place.

How do you keep the work-life balance?

I’m still figuring this out. At times i think i have it mastered and other times i feel i still have a lot to learn.

My passion is very similar to my full-time job, therefore, it bleeds into my life at times.

For me having a side project provides an element of escapism and a means to creatively express myself without any constraints.

Other hacks i have found helpful which i’m pretty strict about are turning notifications off at the weekend (Slack, Email), not working weekends, just my own personal projects, finding hobbies that aren’t similar to work, regularly working out and getting outside.

Definitely my new custom gaming PC, which is everything I could have dreamed of in a PC and so much more. Regardless of where my streaming journey goes, I'll cherish this gift forever––it's truly one of the coolest, nicest things I own.

How do you spark creativity?

It definitely isn't always easy, huh? To be honest, I struggle with periods of creative block all the time, and I definitely don't hold all the answers in this realm. But I can say that the one thing that has never failed to make me feel better when I'm in a creative slump (or when I'm feeling imposter-syndrome-y) is to just jump into an impromptu stream with my friends and see where it takes me, or hop into a watch party for whatever show we're going nuts over that month. I can't say that it always sparks creativity per se, but it always makes the bad feelings less catastrophic.

How do you manage work-life balance?

Honestly, having the privilege to work freelance part-time and create content part-time outside of that is how I manage work-life balance! It's an incredibly lucky position to be in, and I never take it for granted. My partner is incredibly supportive, and so are my friends and my little community, which has allowed me to work significantly less than the average American. Ultimately, if I'm being honest, I don't believe that anyone can have a healthy work-life balance while working a 40-hour work week. We need to rethink the work culture we have in this country, prioritize people's health and wellbeing more, pay people living wages, and adjust our expectations of one another to make society a better place. Sorry for getting on my soapbox about it.

What items are in your workspace?

  • Recently upgraded to Mac Studio + Studio Display. There’s not much to say about it you haven’t already heard, but it’s a pretty spectacular replacement for my 2015 iMac.

  • I’ll briefly comment on my virtual setup. Dock must be pinned at bottom with auto hiding on, and satisfying amounts of magnification. I’m a command tab + command tilda user and simultaneously think it’s silly how many different window management solutions Mac OS has layered on over the years while stubbornly clinging onto my personal favorite. Finally a highly recommend setting up an auto screenshot sharing app, like CleanShot that can automatically copy a shareable link to screenshots as you take them. Super useful. And one plug for Soulver, a true indie Mac app gem that is weirdly under the radar.

  • ‍Apple Trackpad. I was a mouse guy for a while but these days I don’t game on my Mac and find the trackpad a little more relaxing without the sound of a mouse scraping on the desk. I still haven’t picked up those fancy multitouch shortcut tricks though. I really should.‍

  • Lego figurines, made with amazing AR BrickIt app on a couple separate occasions with different friends. The app is crazy cool – the best part is, it’ll give you a bunch of model instructions to choose from, but you are going to be missing some pieces and forced to improvise along the way. IMO while niche it’s one of the handful of actually amazing AR experiences today, and the figures we made are souvenirs with good memories attached.‍

  • Two succulents in cute corgi (Rexxar) and cat (Bruce) pots. I got these from Amazon after seeing the amazing Animal Crossing planters Alice Lee made for herself and shared on twitter.These were the cutest ones I could find for myself.

  • Can I admit something? I got really into making my place cozier over the past two years, and it’s because of Animal Crossing. I loved decorating my virtual home and island to make it just perfect and it was actually a great way to play around and figure out what I liked. And then it was like why am I not investing this effort into my real life home!‍

  • Uplift standing desk. I like this desk but I would be lying if I said I regularly use it in the standing position. I’ve probably used it in standing position ~100 hours over the past few years I’ve had it and I would call it naively aspirational in hindsight. But it is a nice surface to work on, and it’s the first desk I have that came with wire hiders and things and the effort I put in there to tidy and hide cables has been worth it. (The built in power sockets are also very useful!) But yes it is slightly embarrassing how little I stand on it. Shifting to stand mode now.‍

  • Embody chair. This was a splurge many years ago with my partners at tap tap tap set on one. They roped me in so everyone could expense one without feeling guilty. Its hydraulics recently broke and my cat took over it for stretches and tore it up. But it’s done my back good service for something like a dozen years.‍

  • Fugu plush. This is a one of a kind test-run prototype plush based on our ‘fugu’ character. We spent like 3 years trying to breathe life into it (Hatch for iOS), and really wanted people to think of it as their pet, and more than an app or game. We ultimately weren’t able to make Hatch the lasting project we hoped it to be, but love our little fugu. And maybe we’ll revisit someday.‍

  • Muhammad Ali portrait. This was a birthday gift earlier this year from my dad. He mentioned in the note that I really enjoyed a biography of Ali as a kid. “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” In some ways that’s what we aspire to do too at Impending – staying nimble but hopefully with some real knockout power when the perfect opportunity comes up.

What is your favorite item in your workspace?

This moment I shared on twitter and the reaction to it (Apr 25) really made me grateful for the view out my window. A lot of times the most important work gets done gazing out at the tree outside or people walking by. And thinking back, I’ve always picked places to live with a nice view out to work to. So I think that, or my cat Bruce who likes to sleep on the bed near me while I work.‍

How do you spark creativity?‍

Hmm I think patience is importance, and when that wave of inspiration comes, riding it. Like how I imagine the life of a surfer to be. I don’t know if you can spark it reliably when you want or need it, and thinking of it that way might be a road to frustration.

When real inspiration comes in the form of an awesome hook or premise for a new app or something, it’s usually grounded in a pretty different perspective we have on the ‘genre’ or category it’s in, and I think a different valid perspective can make things easy in a way. It always naturally flowers with more good ideas that align with it in a kind of fractal way if the perspective was both legit and fresh. So if that’s not happening with a project we move on.‍

How do you keep the work-life balance with so many projects going on at once?

We usually have just two going on – ongoing Heads Up! work, and one more personal/indie project we are excited about. We have an expansive shelf, or graveyard, of interesting prototypes and unfinished projects.

I don’t consider myself a good 'multi-tasker' and I think it’s important to be able to load in and retain a model of what you’re working on in your limited brain space while you’re working on it. So for me it’s important we keep our projects/ideas fairly simple (which fits mobile app context well) and avoid splitting our focus as much as possible.

And I guess as a team we’ve just wisened up some over the years on sustainable hours, a better work-life division and internalizing that we’re halfway through a marathon now and interested in reaching the finish line, whatever that may be.

What is your favorite item in your workspace?

I have two. My 2020 M1 MacBook Air is my favorite computer I’ve ever owned. It is lightweight, the battery still lasts a full day after 2 years of use, and it is my main device for work and creating content.

My wife also printed out and framed this tweet of mine. There’s a some back story but it means a lot to me.

How do you spark creativity?

In two ways: going for a hike or by watching YouTube. Hiking outside forces me to be alone with my thoughts. I often come up with new ideas when I let my mind wander. YouTube also inspires me. There are a ton of creators out there and watching others’ videos makes me want to make my own.

How do you manage work-life balance?

I exercise, do chores, run errands during the day to break up my work day. Once I pick up the kids from school around 3pm, I put work aside. I will help them with homework, get dinner ready, and spend time with my wife and kids until it’s time to put them to bed. In the evening, I’ll catch up on things from the late afternoon.

What do you think is the main benefit of remote work?

For me, it’s the flexibility. I would never give up the flexibility of a remote or hybrid job. Growing up, my parents were never able to pick me up from school because they had jobs they needed to be at physically. I did not get to spend a lot of after school time with them. I want to be there for my kids as much as possible and having the flexibility of a remote job allows that.

What is the most useful item in your workspace?

Having the Mac Mini as a separate always-on file server for all of these big hard drives makes the laptop life way more feasible than if I had to keep it tethered to a bunch of drive arrays to access all the big files. And I wired the place with 10gb ethernet a couple of years ago, so I can keep the Mini and all the drives in a separate room and keep the office nice and quiet, but still access everything as quick as if they were plugged directly in.

But really, its all of these shelves that hold all of this stuff. So it’s gotta be the shelves.

How do you spark creativity?

I’m lucky to have acres of woods and nature right outside the window, so whenever I’m finding myself losing the thread or getting distracted by things I’m not supposed to be doing, I head out into the woods and space out while walking or find a quiet spot to meditate. Never fails to get me out of a rut.

How do you manage work-life balance?

I don’t, not well at least. But I have some very distracting roommates (ie. children) that don’t let me work too much. But I’m a big believer in working around your energy, and I’m a night owl, so I don’t mind getting some more work in later in the evening at all.

What do you think is the main benefit of remote work?

Stepping outside and taking care of our garden and being home when my kids get home from school. It can break up the days in sometimes really unproductive ways, but it’s hard to beat.

It has to be my guitar, it isn't anything fancy but it punches way above its weight - also such a great addition to the workspace having it at arm's reach to pick up for 5 minutes every now and then to get a break from the screen.

How do you spark creativity?

I think lately it's been by allowing my mind to be a bit lazy and wander when working on creative projects - the creative field can be quite a mental drain and it's easy to burnout so giving your mind a chance to unwind and roam when you're working on a tricky problem or trying to come up with creative solutions can be the switch that leads to those aha moments. Speaking of laziness and creativity, It's Nice That did an interesting report on the topic quite recently.

How do you manage work-life balance?

I've learned to set up pretty strict boundaries between work time and personal time. I fell into the freelance trap of the lines blurring between life and work a few years ago so I've been careful to avoid that happening again. Turning off work notifications after hours and taking a break during lunch to get a run or workout in have been valuable habits to build up a healthy balance. I'm also lucky to work in an environment that fosters healthy boundaries between work and personal life.

What is your favorite item in your workspace?

My favorite “item” is definitely the views. Working remotely has brought many benefits for me, but one of them is waking up to such nice scenery every morning. Also, having a clean setup boosts my productivity. I’m not really into having lots of papers over the desk.

How do you spark creativity?

I’m the most creative when doing something completely different than work. Working out, having a walk, or simply connecting ideas when hanging out with some friends. For me, it’s very difficult to be productive by sitting for eight hours straight on a chair, so I’m constantly walking around the house thinking out loud.

How do you manage work-life balance?

I really love what I do, so I don’t feel that urge to separate them. My mind is always seeking new ideas so it would be a waste of time trying to stop it from doing so. The only thing I’m forcing myself to do is working out regularly, and I feel quite refreshed after that dopamine release in the morning.

What is your favorite item in your workspace?

My favourite item has to be the standing desk. I’ve only recently upgraded my desk into a standing one and it was one of the best workspace decisions I’ve ever made. It boosts productivity, I’m a pacer when I think, and it’s more comfortable.

How do you spark creativity?

To spark creativity I’ve got whiteboard stickers on the wall next to the desk to scribble stuff down at any time, as well as a giant whiteboard in the hall. I love going analogue when coming up with ideas, just getting stuff on a whiteboard as quick as possible. As silly as it sounds, I also try to dedicate at least one hour a week to just ideation, to see what’s rattling round in my head.

How do you keep the work-life balance?

Work-life balance isn’t the biggest priority for me, as I absolutely love everything I do. I make sure I reserve some time in the morning and the evening to prepare for the day and then unwind, but otherwise things are flexible! Some days I’ve got plenty of time for myself, and other days can be a little busy. But I love it!

Workspace Equipment

  • A Dell UltraSharp U3415W 34-inch curved monitor. The fidelity of the display isn't amazing, but the real estate has forever spoiled me: trying to do flow work on a laptop or iPad (unless it's something like writing) is impossible now

  • Magic Mouse & Magic Keyboard, because I foolishly believe RSI will never happen to me

  • AirPods Max, which I cannot recommend buying in good faith (they are so expensive) but I truly love

  • A 2019 Mac Mini for personal use and a 2018 MacBook Pro as a work laptop

  • A hoarder-like slew of Amazon Basics Notebooks and the nigh-infamous Muji Gel Black 0.38mms for writing quick notes. (I have tried using "actual" notebooks and journals and planners and inevitably I fall out of favor with them — disposability and casual scribbling is too important for me)

  • The same Logitech webcam pretty much everyone has

  • A pair of [clears throat] JÄRVFJÄLLET Ikea chairs. Sort of weirdly high-backed, but super comfortable.

And, of course, the most important thing to outfit a hygge workplace: a seven-month old corgi puppy. Telemachus is not the best multiplier on my productivity, truth be told, but he represents the "life" in the whole "work-life balance" thing!

Mac Cormier is a design lead at Square and runs an independent print studio called Cypress Design Co.

His workspace is a collection of industrially purposed furniture: a workbench, a tool cabinet, and a stool. During typical work hours it functions as a desk with a laptop and keyboard—but outside of the old 9-5, it’s a carving bench, a drawing space or a full printing line. Keeping it minimal makes it easy to swap out the tools for the space’s current needs. The prints shown are a backdrop for calls and come from friends around the industry: Camille Villanueva, InkyCatPrints, and Studio Tokek.
