She had a chance to sit down with some of the Jetty Rock Foundation team including Jetty founding partner, Jeremy DeFilippis, to learn how JRF stemmed from a unified response to Hurricane Sandy into the charitable organization it is today, hosting several events throughout the year in the LBI region. The Jetty Rock Foundation has a simple, yet meaningful mission: “Protect our oceans and waterways, and support those who build their lives around them.”

For many people, the Jetty brand is associated with sun, surf, and sand, but in addition to being a coastal lifestyle brand, the team behind Jetty is on a mission to spread their coastal interests further in the form of charitable giving with the creation of the Jetty Rock Foundation. JRF stemmed from a unified response to Hurricane Sandy when t-shirts were created to sell and raise money for those affected by the storm. The fundraiser took on a life of its’ own and led to the Jetty team creating the JRF, officially approved in 2014 as a 501(C)3 Charitable Organization. Their mission is simple, yet meaningful: “Protect our oceans and waterways, and support those who build their lives around them.” Founding Jetty partner and Jetty Rock Foundation Treasurer Jeremy DeFilippis explains, “Jetty Rock runs all the events…[they’re] great initiatives—environmental, storm relief, and community-focused.”

JRF is led by a dedicated team who share in the belief that “a rising tide lifts all boats.” As JRF Environmental Director Kyle Gronostajski says, “We’re always keeping our ear to the ground to find different things we can donate to or where there’s need. Beyond that, it’s grown to a lot of community and education funding as well.” With donated funds totaling close to three million dollars, Jetty hosts an array of events throughout the year designed to support the foundation and relies on the Jetty fan base to enable the support. Event Director Joe Mangino says, “Through the years, we’ve built a trust in the community, and we have a track record of doing the best we can with the dollars we receive.” In addition to storm relief, another of the initiatives the foundation supports is working with the community to fund environmental education for students through Gear for Grades. There are several aspects to the initiative including a discount program for students when they present a report card at checkout in the Bay Avenue store, as well as the sale of a limited-edition t-shirt that benefits the local Stafford Schools. JRF also helps fund field trips. Mangino is proud of the role the foundation plays in ensuring every student experiences a field trip during the school year. “Only the sixth-grade class was going on a trip and we thought [about] what we could do to make sure every kid has a field trip, so we did Gear for Grades. I’ll go to the schools on back-to-school night and talk to families, and they just love that we’re doing that… We’re making a big impact.”

Coquina Jam, an all-female, team-oriented surf contest has raised over $300,000 throughout the years.

The field trips are a great way to continue spreading awareness of JRF’s mission, introducing students to oyster farming, restoration efforts, shell recycling, and more. Part of Gronostajski’s role has been to grow the environmental aspect. “We’ll take [students] to different sites throughout New Jersey; we go down to Cape May to a hatchery run by Rutgers; Barnegat Oyster Collective; Barnegat Light where they can see more of what’s happening…just trying to let people know that this is going on in our backyard.”

Events are a huge part of JRF’s fundraising efforts and as Marketing Manager and Graphic Designer Jessica Petty describes, “We work very closely with local businesses and local restaurants as well as other big partners to fund these.” Partnerships and sponsors include Tide Table Group, Kona Big Wave, and Red Bull, among others. Clam Jam was created as a way to bring the community together and support community members and now is a day to remember JRF friend and supporter Patrick Harrington, who sadly lost his brave battle with cancer. Petty fondly remembers Harrington, “He loved Jetty and loved to surf, so we have ‘swag bags’ which [consist of] items that comforted him during treatment. We worked closely with his mom and came up with these bags that have snacks, coupons for local restaurants, water bottles--things that Pat found comforting—and they’re distributed to other patients in the hope it comforts them.” Gronostajski reiterates the important role Harrington played at Jetty events. “He was at every single thing we ever had and we’re making sure he’s not forgotten and his message carries on.” Other events include Coquina Jam, an all-female, team-oriented surf contest that over the years has raised over $300,000; Arctic Outreach, a clambake held outside in the wintertime in memory of Mallory McBrien, a community member who battled cancer, which has raised and donated more than $285,000; and many more. DeFilippis notes that “Clam Jam was going on before we had JRF, but we eventually made it a charitable event; we’ve been doing Coquina Jam again since before JRF was a thing…they’re just great gatherings of the LBI community.”

Jetty runs on the belief that “doing good is good business.”

The Jetty Brand and Jetty Rock Foundation go hand in hand, bringing people together. Mangino, who also works for the brand explains, “I don’t think of myself as making transactions; I think of it as building relationships, so I’m always trying to tell people about the work we do, whether it’s storm relief, clean up, environmental education—it’s a joy to be on all sides.” DeFilippis is in agreement and remarks, “It’s just super rewarding. We’ve given out over 2.7 million dollars and we really vet where that money is going and cut the red tape…we’ve very grassroots which kind of syncs with the brand side…we’re small but mighty.” As for future plans for the foundation, Gronostajski notes, “Really starting to grow beyond just this area, but always keeping the focus here and remembering this is our home community.” Working for Jetty and the foundation is personal for Mangino. “When my family lost everything after Superstorm Sandy, JRF was one of the organizations that gave us a hand up, so naturally I’m going to do whatever it takes to see this foundation succeed.” He continues, “I know how amazing it feels when someone is there knocking at your door in your time of need, so this to me is an amazing job…it’s important we never forget where we’re from and who surrounds us.”

With plans to further integrate the foundation more and more into the brand aspect, the team is excited to continue to spread the word of “one of the big pillars of the entire company [which] is nonprofit.” After all, Jetty runs on the belief that “doing good is good business.”

Fourchette has called Beach Haven home since the summer of 2020.

Famed English gastronome Ernest Oldmeadow once said, “The only way to learn about cheese is to eat it.” Cheese enthusiasts need look no further than Fourchette in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island. Opened in the summer of 2020, the shop quickly took off and has been embraced by both locals and tourists. Owned by husband and wife team Brahim Sadouni and Meredith Hyland, Fourchette originally opened in Clinton, NJ, where the store found a following of gourmet food connoisseurs and those looking for fine and unique gift items. Several years later, the island location opened, followed by Fourchette’s newest shop in Red Bank.

Sadouni and Hyland met while living in Paris and discovered a mutual affinity for fine cheeses. Upon their return to the states, fate intervened and as Hyland explains, “On a fateful trip to Napa [we] saw all these wonderful gourmet shops and thought, we should do this.” With their shared passion for good food along with the desirability of living in a charming small town, Hyland created a business plan and set it aside. One year later, an opportunity presented itself and Fourchette was born. Equipped with a business background and experience in both product management and marketing, Hyland used that foundation to launch what has become a very successful small business. Happenstance came into play yet again when Hyland and Sadouni received a newsletter featuring LBI real estate listings and noticed a building in Beach Haven that was perfect for expanding Fourchette. Hyland’s childhood included a week spent on the island every summer and she knew early on that the island would be part of her future. “All those summers and I always said to myself, one day I’m going to have a beach house on Long Beach Island. And so, I got both—a business and a beach house.”

Fourchette specializes in the creation of beautiful charcuterie boards and custom charcuterie boxes.

While Sadouni showcases his passion year-round in running the Clinton shop, Hyland spends her summers in Beach Haven and is pleased to spend a lot of time sourcing a variety of specialty cheeses which the shop has become known for. Utilizing industry connections they’ve made along the way, Hyland and Sadouni are pleased to offer not only a fine assortment of cheeses from around the world, but also their signature olive oils and balsamic vinegars, Italian specialties, and one-of-a-kind houseware and gift items. A favorite of theirs is olivewood, handmade and sourced from Tunisia, adjacent to Sadouni’s native Algeria. They’ve also brought in pasta from the oldest manufacturer in Italy, Vicidomini, as well as “aged to perfection” Comté cheese and Délice de Bourgogne, “a fan favorite,” according to Hyland. Embracing a coastal feel, the Beach Haven shop features the artwork of Barloga Art Studios, including a series on oyster shells, “perfect for the beach,” Hyland notes. Fourchette also offers a variety of branded products including straw bags and travel bags designed by Hyland. In addition to the shops, an extensive website offers customers the opportunity to shop from home, sign up for events, and order premade cheeseboards and more specialty items. Hyland credits her staff, all of whom have food backgrounds, with maintaining the right balance between coming up with creative ideas for events, sharing cheese recommendations and pairings, and keeping the store aesthetically pleasing. “[They] know the food business and really care about the community. We’re a family and I’m just so blessed to have people who are so excited about [the] business,” Hyland proudly states. This year, the store remained open weekends in the off season and enjoyed hosting a series of tasting and pop-up events. “Our most popular one is our caviar tasting…people come in strangers and leave friends.” Hyland and her team enjoy getting to know clients and prioritize familiarizing themselves with clients’ tastes and preferences.

Fourchette hosts several tastings per month, giving guests the chance to sample a variety of cheeses and Italian specialties.

Fourchette proudly partners with other businesses and individuals and has collaborated with the Oyster Collective for a shucking event; The Food Dragon—aka Nicole Dragon, who did a presentation on ingredients and preparation; and the shop has an upcoming event this summer with Emilia d’Albero, the first female and first American to win the title of World’s Best Cheesemonger. Fourchette takes pride in working with those in the community and provided a cheese grazing table for The Gables twentieth anniversary celebration. The business is often called upon by homeowners during the summertime to prepare renter gifts—beautiful charcuterie boxes designed as a welcome treat to renters on the island. Hyland is thrilled to be part of the LBI community and says, “In Beach Haven, we’re surrounded by great little shops…and each of us has a unique perspective.” Among her favorites to frequent, The Spotted Whale, K and Co., Sandy Banks Boutique, and The Dune Market.

The Fourchette team continues to plan for the future, adding new and exciting events to the calendar all the time and is eager to try a variety of different ideas, bringing great service and great cheese to the island community. The LBI location is particularly special to Hyland who explains, “LBI is my place and always has been, and I’m just delighted to be able to own a business there that’s flourishing and be embraced by the community.”

The NJ Maritime Museum in Beach Haven is in need of a little love. A few weeks back, a sprinkler pipe rupture caused substantial damage to all three floors of the building. We think the museum said it best by stating that the building “decided to take on water like a schooner caught napping in a nor’easter.'“ Check out their post about the damage here and if you’d like to make a tax-deductible donation to keep things afloat, you can do so by visiting their website.

P.S. keep an eye on the weather for Sunday night into Monday. Like most storms this time of the year, it’s either going to be a bust or several inches of plowable snow depending on the storm track. The silver lining? We’re less than a hundred days away from Memorial Day Weekend!
