Typing those numbers still feels weird. I've been doing this in the margins of a full-time job. Mornings, lunches, and a lot of Sundays.

The reason I'm writing today

Over the last few months, a handful of you have replied or DM'd asking some version of the same question. How did you actually start? Is it worth it for someone like me? A couple of you are running companies. A few mentioned a side project you've been thinking about for years.

I've been giving roughly the same answer over and over, so I figured I'd put it in one place.

If you've got a 9-to-5 and something you genuinely care about — cars, whiskey, B2B pricing, your hometown's restaurant scene, doesn't matter — a newsletter is one of the few side projects where the math actually pencils out. You write on Sunday. It earns on Tuesday. No inventory. No fulfillment. No employees to manage on top of the day job.

And if you're a founder, the case is different but just as real. A newsletter is a more personal way to stay close to customers and prospects than running another cold sequence at them. Back After 2 Months: The Ultimate Lock-In

Two months ago, I hit pause. After nearly 100 interviews, late nights, and lessons learned, I decided to step away from my podcast. It wasn’t an easy call to make. I loved those conversations, but the truth is, growth had stalled, advertisers weren’t biting, and my energy was getting pulled elsewhere.

That “elsewhere” is what I’ve been building for the past four months: a cigar media company called Stogies and Steals. And it’s been one of the most exciting, challenging, and validating periods of my career so far.

Lessons I’ve Learned Recently

Here are the biggest takeaways from the past few months:

Sacrifice is the price of goals. Everyone wants success. Few want what it costs.
Delusional confidence is underrated. Convince yourself you can, and often, you will.
AI is a founder’s cheat code. I’ve never written code in my life, but in under an hour, I built and deployed a landing page with AI — and got a paying customer. (This was not possible 12 months ago)
Leverage the system. A high-paying sales job with flexible hours is the smartest move young entrepreneurs can make. Learn, sell, storytell on someone else’s dime.

The Ultimate Lock-In

On the personal side, life is hard, no matter where you’re at. Don’t think you’re alone in that. For me, the next six months are what I’m calling the “Ultimate Lock-In.”

The Crazy Story of How Candela Mamajuna Was Built

From Poolside Shots to Building Candela

This week, I sat down with Alejandro Russo, the founder of Candela Mamajuana, a fast-growing premium liquor brand with one of the wildest founding stories you’ll ever hear.

It all started when Alejandro stumbled across Mamajuana at a Dominican resort—a botanical-infused rum with a 200-year history but no real premium brand behind it. What followed was a rollercoaster of hustling cases into college parties, building in The Dominican Republic, surviving COVID shutdowns, and eventually bringing Pitbull on as a key investor.

A Drunken Epiphany

Sitting by the pool in Punta Cana, Alejandro realized:

Millions of Americans drank Mamajuana every year, but nobody bottled it properly.
It was like Mezcal 20 years ago—huge cultural roots but no premium branding.
He thought: “Someone’s gonna make millions off this. Why not me?”

So he started Candela: the first premium Mamajuana brand, infused with authentic Dominican botanicals and crafted like a high-end spirit.

How He Proved It Could Work

With no money for marketing, Alejandro hacked his launch:

He imported 250 test cases to Chile.
Partnered with a friend running massive college parties.
Let students drink it for free at open bars—and they loved it.
Word spread, and his first big batch sold out.

From there, Candela slowly grew—case by case, party by party.

Surviving COVID: Pitbull To The Rescue

At the peak of COVID, Candela was on the verge of bankruptcy, selling zero bottles in April 2020.
Then came a call:
"Pitbull loves your brand. He wants to meet you."

Alejandro thought it was a prank—until he walked onto Pitbull’s yacht.

They took shots of Candela.
Pitbull opened his notebook and said: "I love this. How can I help?"
He became an investor and later stepped in to save the brand financially when other investors backed out.

"Candela wouldn’t exist today if Pitbull hadn’t stepped up," Alejandro says.

Candela’s Big Leap

Today, Candela is:

Sold in 700+ stores
Partnered with top Dominican resorts
Relaunching with new premium branding (designed by the same agency behind Hendrick’s Gin)

This week, I sat down with Joshua Dominic, cofounder of Dreamstar Lines, a startup that’s reimagining how we travel in the U.S.—through overnight sleeper trains that let you skip the airport and arrive refreshed with your own car.

Joshua’s story is wild—from a nightmare train ride in Myanmar to pressure-testing his own startup idea until it refused to die. What started as a dream from his backpacking days in Europe became a fully operational vision to modernize rail travel across America.

Why Trains, Why Now?

Joshua realized that Americans spend half a day traveling for business or pleasure, time that could be saved by sleeping en route. He asked a simple but powerful question: “Why doesn’t the U.S. have overnight trains like Europe?”
And then he tried to kill that idea—over and over—until it survived every test.

Building Dreamstar Lines

He didn’t just pitch the vision. He partnered with Union Pacific, mapped out track use agreements, and gathered a community excited to trade early flights and long drives for a better travel experience.

How Carl Got Started

Carl's journey began in sneaker reselling. He learned pricing, customer psychology, and marketing from flipping Yeezys and Supreme. That evolved into ecommerce stores, and eventually into hiring a CRO freelancer to help improve his conversions. That freelancer is now his business partner.

Together, they built Accelerated, which now has a team of 30+ people working with some of the biggest DTC and B2B brands on the planet.

Carl was drawn to CRO because it sits at the intersection of marketing and psychology. It’s not about design—it’s about understanding how people think and buy.

"If you understand your customer better than your competitor, you win."

The Accelerated Strategy

Accelerated doesn’t run ads or manage media. Instead, they embed full CRO teams into high-growth companies. Each 6-person pod includes:

Web designers & developers
CRO strategists & analysts
Copywriters and funnel experts

They handle landing pages, offers, testing, upsells, A/B tests, and more. But they’re selective—they only work with 25 brands at a time doing at least $500K/month.

"We act like an internal growth team, not an outside agency."

Carl's big break came after speaking at GeekOut Dubai in 2022. That one talk led to their first major client, The Oodie, and snowballed from there. Soon they were working with Huel, AG1, Hormozi, and others.

What Most Brands Get Wrong

Copying big brands instead of talking to their actual customers
Relying on juniors instead of hiring experienced specialists
Ignoring CRO and trying to fix low performance by spending more on ads
Skipping customer research and missing key messaging insights

Instead of guessing, Carl recommends brands interview customers and build pages around real objections and use cases.

"Good CRO is just structured empathy. Talk to 50 customers. The answers are there."

Building the Right Team

Early in his journey, Carl made common founder mistakes: hiring based on personality, skipping process, and scaling without financial visibility. The fix? Hire fewer, better people.

"One senior can outperform four juniors. It's worth the cost."

He also learned the hard way that culture matters more than you expect. Anyone who didn’t align with their mindset eventually left.

How to Win in 2025 (and Beyond)

Carl believes the next 5 years will get even tougher for e-commerce founders:

CPMs will keep rising
Ad fatigue is increasing
Consumers are smarter and harder to convert

The edge will go to brands that:

Understand their customers better

How to Build a Newsletter That Actually Makes Money

This week, I sat down with Marketing Max, a founder who built and sold a 7-figure ad agency, then built a 7-figure newsletter business on top of it. He’s now helping founders do the same through a new done-for-you newsletter agency.

In this episode, Max lays out the exact strategy he’s using to build a newsletter-first marketing engine that drives leads, closes clients, and turns ad revenue into a growth flywheel.

How Max Got His Start

Max started his career on Wall Street, working in investment banking before failing his Series 7 license exam. That moment set him on a new path. He began running Facebook ads for a client and turned $2K into $20K in two weeks. He was hooked.

He dove head-first into marketing, built a 7-figure agency with 15 employees, and eventually sold it to private equity. But what came next would redefine his approach to growth.

Why Newsletters?

Max realized the ad landscape had shifted. What once cost $2 now costs $20. Facebook and Google ads no longer delivered reliable returns for startups.

So he built a newsletter, Growth Daily, originally just to drive sales for a low-ticket course. But the newsletter took off. Advertisers came in, revenue followed, and soon Max was making $10–15K/month just on ads.

"I started writing to sell my course. Now I use newsletters to build an entire business."

The Newsletter Flywheel

Here’s Max’s strategy:

Use Paid Ads to Grow the List
- Spend $20K/month on Facebook to acquire subscribers at ~$2 each.
- Result: ~10K new subs every month.
Monetize with Direct Response Ads
- He makes that $20K back (and more) through newsletter sponsors.
- This means customer acquisition is net zero or even profitable.
Sell Services via Typeform Funnels
- When a subscriber joins, they complete a Typeform.
- If they qualify, they get routed to a sales call.
- If they don’t book, they get followed up with custom Looms.

"I’m not just building media. I’m using media to sell services—and ads fund the whole thing."

What Most People Get Wrong

They think newsletters are only for ad revenue.
They believe they need 100K+ subs to make money.
They write too much fluff and not enough actionable content.
They ignore the power of personal storytelling.

Max emphasizes that you don’t need a massive list to start monetizing. Even 300 subscribers can be enough to drive leads—especially if they’re the right people.

He also stresses the importance of writing from experience:

"Your audience doesn’t want theory. They want what worked for you."

The Smarter Newsletter Strategy

Most people start newsletters hoping to land ad revenue. Max says flip that:

Use the newsletter to build trust
Sell your own service first
Supplement with ad revenue

"Newsletters should be built to sell. The ads are just a bonus."

He calls this the smartest go-to-market strategy for B2B founders in 2025.

Ever wondered what happens when you ignore the "safe path" and instead pursue what truly fascinates you?

This week, I sat down with Kian Sadeghi, founder of Nucleus Genomics – a company making genetic testing more accessible than ever before. Kian dropped out of UPenn, lied to his immigrant parents, and bet everything on a vision now backed by Peter Thiel and Alexis Ohanian.

The 25-Year-Old Face Of The Genomics Industry

From Personal Tragedy to Revolutionary Healthcare

Kian's journey began with personal loss. When his cousin unexpectedly died in her sleep, he asked his father (a doctor) how this could happen.

"I became interested in genetics. I started realizing that disease isn't an inherent property of human beings. It shouldn't be just left to chance whether you die or not."

This curiosity led him to join a DIY gene laboratory in Brooklyn while still in high school. The pivotal moment came at UPenn, when he saw what he calls "my favorite chart in the world"—the decreasing cost of sequencing the human genome.

"Your DNA is like a thousand-page book. It used to cost around $100 million to read all 1,000 pages. At the time in 2020, it was just $1,000. This price is going towards zero. I have to build the application layer for DNA."

The Courage to Follow Your Passion

When Kian decided to drop out during COVID, his immigrant parents gave him an ultimatum: stay in school or work in a lab with a professor.

His solution? He programmed a fake email from a professor.

"I worked twelve hours a day for a year. It was extreme stress, extreme pressure. But I love stress. Bring it the fuck on."

This determination led to what he calls "the highest agency decision I made entirely on my own."

"Whenever I followed my bliss, good things happened. Whenever I borrowed someone else's brain, bad things happened."

From Zero to $18 Million

One of the most impressive aspects of Kian's journey was raising his first funding with no credentials, no degree, and no employees.

After countless rejections (including from Y Combinator), he reached out to investor Corey Levy through a cold text. Despite fumbling through "the most garbled pitch ever," Levy committed $200,000 the next day.

This initial investment was followed by Peter Thiel's Founders Fund leading an $18 million round, with Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian also participating.

"Think about me going from no money, no network, no college degree, nothing. Now imagine the discipline and determination I had without any money. Put money on there—it's like gasoline on the fire."

What Nucleus Is Building

So what exactly is Nucleus creating? Kian explains:

"Historically, reading someone's DNA would cost $100 million. Old companies would look at one page out of the thousand and give you a small read of your DNA."

Because of the dramatic decrease in sequencing costs, Nucleus now offers comprehensive genome sequencing for a few hundred dollars, combining what used to be 70,000 separate genetic tests into one.

The implications are enormous:

"Your DNA impacts your disease risk—cancers, diabetes, neuropsychiatric diseases. It impacts your family planning. It tells you what drugs you metabolize better and worse."

Looking ahead, Kian sees Nucleus evolving into a platform with two key functions:

Don't Die: A real-time health platform that predicts disease before symptoms appear.
Generational Health: Helping people have healthier children by reducing genetic markers that contribute to disease.

"That's not a billion-dollar business. That's a trillion-dollar business."

The Mindset That Makes All the Difference

Throughout our conversation, Kian shared insights that apply far beyond genomics:

Follow curiosity to the frontier: "The wonders of the universe are much closer than you think if you just pay attention."

Take the long view: "When you follow your bliss, you do it independent of everything else. You don't need the money or power. You do it because you love it."

Embrace failure: "Life makes it seem as if mistakes are fatal. That's not how life works. You make a mistake, no one gives a fuck. You wake up and do something else the next day."

Doing beats thinking: "You should always just do."

Perhaps most importantly, Kian emphasized that the AI revolution is creating unprecedented opportunities:

"If you're young and hungry, this is probably going to be one of the single greatest opportunities in history. The AI revolution is probably even bigger than the Internet revolution."

This Week’s Founder Interview

Breaking Into a Traditional Industry as a Young Founder

When Nick launched El Mago Cigars three years ago, he faced an uphill battle: an industry where the average player is 40-70 years old.

"Being so young in an industry where retailers, manufacturers, and distributors are probably in their forties to sixties...that difference in age was a big challenge," Nick shared.

Adding to the difficulty, he chose to launch in South Florida—considered the hardest cigar market in the US. Despite these obstacles, Nick persisted with confidence in his product.

What started as a tribute to his grandparents, who tragically passed in the Surfside building collapse, has grown into a thriving business now available in 46 states and supported by 12 sales representatives.

The Three Essentials for Starting a Cigar Brand

For those curious about breaking into this traditional industry, Nick outlined three critical components:

1. Access to a Reputable Factory: Finding a factory partner willing to work with a newcomer is crucial. Nick credits his partnership with Miguel Pinto of MGE Cigar Factory: "Miguel was willing to take me by the hand, show me how to make the blends, and take me to the fields."

2. Distinctive Packaging: Instead of following industry norms with wooden boxes and subdued colors, Nick created vibrant, eye-catching packaging in blue, pink, yellow, and orange. "A lot of people said 'we don't have to try to sell your product because the customers will find it.'"

3. Hands-on Distribution: "You gotta get distribution yourself to start. Build a base so other people start seeing your product everywhere, believing in you, wanting to sell it."

The Art of Cigar Blending

Each cigar consists of three components: the wrapper (outer leaf), the binder (inner layer), and the filler (center tobacco). Like fine wine, tobacco leaves vary based on where they're grown, how they're aged, and which part of the plant they come from.

El Mago's approach differs from competitors. Rather than creating one blend in multiple sizes, Nick develops distinct blends for each product:

"Every blend is a different smoking experience. You might have a morning cigar, an afternoon cigar, an evening cigar."

"Handmade to Handheld": A True Luxury Experience

In an age of automation, cigars remain one of the last truly artisanal luxury products:

"Cigars are one of the few products that are completely handmade. Someone plants the seed by hand. They cut the leaves by hand. Hang the leaves in the barn by hand."

Every step—from planting to rolling to packaging—involves skilled human craftsmanship: "There's no machinery involved except for a scale to weigh the tobacco...everything is done by hand."

This traditional approach creates not just a product but an experience that connects smokers to a tradition dating back thousands of years.

The Future of El Mago

Looking ahead, Nick plans to:

Release several new blends (with "The Jaguar" coming in April)
Expand to all 50 states
Enter at least five international markets

He sees particular opportunity internationally, where premium non-Cuban cigars provide exceptional quality at more accessible price points than traditional Cuban options.

As for the industry itself, Nick believes cigars are finding a renewed place in society as people seek meaningful social connections: "With technology on the rise, a lot of people are getting more socially distant...Go to a cigar lounge."

This Week’s Founder Interview

Why Corporate Sales Reps Make Great Founders

Lauren's story highlights why so many investors are betting on former sales professionals to build successful companies.

"Sales and entrepreneurship go hand in hand," Lauren explained. "You're running your own territory as if it's your own business. You're identifying your target market, your marketing channels, how to reach out to them. You're fitting your product into their story, their initiatives, and their problems."

This perspective is why one of Lauren's investors frequently posts about how tech sales reps make the best founders and CEOs – they've already been running mini-businesses within larger organizations.

Walking Away From Corporate Security

After a decade in corporate sales, Lauren had achieved her biggest goals – closing the largest deal in her org and making seven figures in commission – but found herself unfulfilled.

The turning point? "I just closed the biggest deal of my entire career while playing Candy Crush on my phone."

For Lauren, the decision came down to values: "I'm not super motivated by cash flow. I'm more motivated by learning and growth and challenge."

Walking away brought fears of financial uncertainty and public failure. As Lauren admits, "What if I fail very publicly in front of everybody that I know?" But she's gained perspective: "Every successful entrepreneur I know has had five, six failures before they were ever successful."

The Investor Dating Game

Lauren pitched to 70 investors before getting her first term sheet. Her approach to investor relationships has completely transformed since then.

"When I first started pitching investors, I was like, 'VCs are scary.' What I realized is investors are people too."

Her key advice: "Talk to investors as early as possible, and your first call should never be asking for money."

Instead, she recommends reaching out 6-8 months before you need funding to build relationships. "You don't ever want to marry somebody without dating them. Getting into a partnership with an investor means you'll be talking to them every week or month."

Choosing the Right Co-Founder

With over 30% of startups failing due to co-founder conflicts, Lauren's approach to finding her CTO co-founder, Marco offers valuable lessons:

They spent two full days discussing their values, work styles, and goals using First Round Capital's "50 questions" framework
Started with a trial period where Marco worked without compensation
Discussed everything from big-picture goals to small but critical compatibility issues

"Marco said, 'Why don't I work with you for the next couple months? Don't pay me. And if at the end of it, you think I've done good work, bring me on as your co-founder.'"

The Reality of Founder Life

Despite the highlights, Lauren was refreshingly honest about the challenges:

"If it was easy, everybody would do it. As a founder and CEO, my job is to do sales and marketing and operations, but I'm also the office janitor and the social committee and HR and everything else."

Currently, she's juggling 40-50 meetings per week, managing customer feedback, and working 100-hour weeks that can feel isolating and exhausting.

Zinnia: AI-Powered Sales Assistance

Zinnia functions as "an AE's best friend," handling the time-consuming research and preparation that sales professionals struggle to fit into their day.

The platform integrates with CRM, email, and calendar tools to provide:

Personalized meeting preparation based on previous conversations
Automated research on prospects and companies
Call recording analysis and follow-up email drafting
"Next Best Action" recommendations to prevent deals from "dying in your inbox"

With over 100 businesses now on the platform, Zinnia is gaining traction by automating the administrative burden that makes up "90% of the job" in sales.

Lauren's Advice for 18-Year-Olds

"Nobody knows what they're doing, so just go for it. Don't be afraid of failure because you will fail over and over, and that's okay because failure is just learning."

This week, I sat down with Donald Weber, a corporate communication coach who's worked with Fortune 100 executives, members of royalty, prime ministers, and high court judges across Europe. Why Communication Skills Matter for Everyone

Learning to persuade is "almost everything in communication." We're constantly negotiating and trying to persuade others, whether we realize it or not. These skills aren't just for salespeople—they're essential for anyone looking to lead, influence, or succeed in today's business environment.

Communication is the Foundation of Leadership & Success

The ability to persuade, present ideas clearly, and connect with others determines your effectiveness, regardless of your title. As Donald emphasized, "Nobody makes it to the top by themselves. It's all done on the support of other people."

Key Communication Skills You Need

Persuasion & Influence Understanding what drives the person across from you is essential for genuine persuasion. To be effective:

Mirror their language subtly to build a connection
Listen for what's not being said as much as what is

Leadership Communication Great leaders make others feel valued and important while taking full responsibility rather than placing blame. They excel at simplifying complex topics for their team and focus completely on one project at a time without distractions.

Presentation Skills

Simplify your slides (3-5 points maximum)
Remember: You are the presentation, not the PowerPoint
Vary your vocal delivery to maintain interest

As Donald noted, "When you're delivering a presentation, you're there not just to present the information, but you should know the information inside and out."

The Difference Between Persuasion and Manipulation

Donald emphasized the ethical line between persuasion and manipulation. True persuasion comes from understanding others' needs and helping them, not coercing them.

"Put yourself in their mind. What is it that they're looking for? What is it that they want to get out of it?" - Donald Weber

This approach means:

Identifying what's truly important to the other person
Making them feel secure, valued, or important
Building genuine connections rather than pushing an agenda

How to Connect with High-Level Executives

When engaging with senior leaders, Donald shared these key insights:

Don't be intimidated - they're human beings just like everyone else. As Donald bluntly put it, "they put on one shoe at a time and tie it up just like you."

Understand their common traits - Strong ego drive, charisma, and listening skills are typical characteristics of executives and politicians.

Learn to recognize authentic interest versus professional charisma. The best leaders make you feel valued, but as Donald warned, don't mistake their charisma for genuine connection.

"If you have an opportunity to give a presentation to the board of directors or the steering committee... I've helped people polish a really good presentation. And as a result of that good presentation of their hard work, they got the attention of senior management, and they got promotions." - Donald Weber

The Truth About Mastering Communication

Like any valuable skill, becoming an effective communicator requires consistent practice. As Donald emphasized, there are no shortcuts:

"It's hard work. It doesn't just come like boom. People want instant gratification. It doesn't work that way in the real world."

Great communicators develop these skills through:

Continuous practice and refinement
Learning from failure rather than being discouraged
Seeking feedback and coaching

As Donald explained, it's about training your communication like a muscle - consistent effort leads to lasting strength. "Fail your way to success," as he puts it.

The good news? These are skills anyone can develop with dedication and the right guidance.
