Gemini released “audio overviews” that transforms your Google Docs into podcast-style summaries. The narrator will read your work back to you. This is Google’s latest attempt to integrate AI into your daily workflow.

Noticing a clear trend toward voice-first applications across the board. At the convergence of robotics, AI will inevitably walk and talk. As I’ve been hammering for years now, though, we must be pro-human as a society to create a net positive benefit.

It seems like utilizing Nova Act could help us spend money online shopping faster. Thank you Amazon, very cool.

Mark Cuban backs Skylight, a TikTok alternative built on Bluesky’s underlying technology

Skylight, a startup taking on TikTok with a more open alternative, is launching its mobile app to the public on Tuesday after just 10 weeks of active development.
The app, which is backed by Mark Cuban and others, is now one of many to build on top of the AT Protocol — the same technology that underpins the social network Bluesky
The app is in beta on the Google Play Store and is now available publicly on Apple’s App Store after initial testing.

Our take

The TikTok ban is currently on hold and has an April 5th deadline for a resolution.

We just don’t believe that TikTok will have to leave the U.S. So this seems like a cool idea to talk about, but something that’s ultimately not going to matter in 3-6 months.

Having said that, anything is possible in Trump’s America.

Tokenized equities will dwarf stablecoins, says Kraken co-CEO Arjun Sethi

Kraken co-CEO Arjun Sethi said that tokenized equities are going to become much larger than stablecoins.
The exchange’s recent move to acquire futures trading platform NinjaTrader is part of its desire to bridge traditional finance and crypto.

Our take

We don’t usually include these opinion pieces, but this one caught our attention.

"One tokenized equity is going to be equivalent or larger than Tether," he added. "Now you can have fifty, five hundred, a thousand of those tokenized equities — then you do futures and options trading on top of that.... The market is just going to get that much bigger, that much larger, that much faster than what we're used to.”"

This sounds good for crypto in theory, but I’m not convinced exactly why these equities need to be put on-chain. Either way, this concept is definitely something to keep an eye on over the next year or two.

There’s just no way that they produce an ad like this and expect it to NOT be controversial. But crypto twitter isn’t known for being overly sensitive to social issues.

Was it not executed as well as it could have been? Sure. Are people going to dump solana because of a slightly offensive ad for a conference? No. Was everyone on twitter talking about it today? Yes. So was it really a failure?

Part of me is really happy to see the complete erosion of the seriousness of capital markets. Part of me is scared. But it will be fun.

McDonald’s to employ AI at 43K locations to speed up service

McDonald's is deploying edge computing systems in partnership with Google Cloud, enabling real-time data processing and AI analysis directly in-store.
Upgrades will start with internet-connected kitchen equipment, AI-enabled drive-throughs and AI-powered tools for managers to help make sure that orders are accurate and so restaurants can predict equipment issues before they shut down.
They will be looking for a “generative AI virtual manager” that will perform administrative tasks including shift scheduling instead of a manager.

Our take

Robot takeover has been imminent for some time now. Good to see a world leader being so forward about cutting jobs for robots. I’m sure no one will be upset about this in the future when these changes start cutting more jobs.

Nvidia, GM announce deal for AI, factories and next-gen vehicles

This has been in the works for a while, but now it’s official. Why it’s potentially significant? Nvida is looking to get out of being just everyone’s friendly neighborhood chip supplier and into a role as a true tech superpower. We can’t imagine that this will be their only hardware partnership they line up.

Turns out, they’d rather watch Mr. Beast or scroll through clips of The Rizzler.

It got me thinking about the future of cinema in a world dominated by TikTok, Youtube, Fortnite, and endless scrolling. Can movies reclaim their magic?

Cinema’s Been On Decline For A While

US box offices have been stagnating for a while.

Ticket sales hovered around ~ $10-11 billion annually throughout the 2010s, despite rising ticket prices. Globally, sales reached a record $42.2 billion in 2019. But revenues dropped to $12 billion in 2020. Though recovery has started (global revenues hit around $33.9 billion in 2023), attendance numbers remain sluggish.

It makes sense, younger audiences are simply finding other ways to spend their time and money. TikTok, YouTube, Twitch, gaming, etc.

Americans now spend significantly more time watching YouTube and playing video games than they do in movie theaters. Video games alone generated around $220 billion globally in 2022, nearly six times the global box office revenue.

Movies now compete directly with new media. The two-hour cinema experience feels more costly, both financially and in terms of time and attention.

Films Are Easier To Make, Yet Harder To Make Successful

Making films today is technically easier than ever. Cameras are cheaper, editing is digital, and distribution is theoretically straightforward. Yet, it’s really hard to make a successful film that gains traction.

The indie film landscape is crowded. Streaming platforms offer access, but their algorithms often bury smaller projects, and licensing fees rarely cover production costs. In the past, indie films could rely on DVD sales or cable deals; today, those revenue streams are nearly extinct.

What happened to the mid-budget drama… those $5-30 million films that didn’t make billions of dollars but stimulated conversation and developed contemporary culture.

Hollywood's response has been more Marvel and less innovation, doubling down on established franchises.

While lucrative short-term, audiences are starting to experience franchise fatigue. Recent disappointments at the box office, in my opinion, suggest viewers crave originality over endless sequels and recycled IP.

Movies historically captivated audiences by blending artistry, storytelling, and craftsmanship. Today, much of that feels lost to corporate formulas and amusement-park-style spectacles aimed at maximizing short-term profit.

A Path to Cinematic Revival

All is not lost. Films that are for-the-art and feel authentic can and do resonate widely. Cinema isn't dying, its priorities just need recalibration.

Hollywood must redefine its success beyond billion-dollar blockbusters. Investing in distinctive voices and original stories can pay dividends culturally and financially. Streaming services can embrace indie films as essential rather than supplementary, fostering an ecosystem where creativity thrives.

Theaters must innovate too, transforming cinema-going into experiential events that can't be replicated at home. If moviegoing feels special again, audiences will come back.

My prediction is that movies will survive and thrive by embracing what they're uniquely good at: depth, craft, and emotional connection. Authentic storytelling and artistic vision can recapture audiences fatigued by superficial spectacle.

McBride’s observations should serve as a wake-up call. If cinema is to remain relevant, the industry must rediscover and champion its roots as a medium of magical storytelling, not just amusement-park attractions.

This isn’t absolutely world changing news, but it’s certainly not bearish either.

OpenAI launches new tools to help businesses build AI agents

OpenAI launched a new API on March 11th enabling developers and businesses to build AI agents that can perform tasks like web searches, file scans, and website navigation using OpenAI’s models.
OpenAI also released the Agents SDK, an open-source toolkit to help developers integrate, safeguard, and monitor AI agents, aiming to bridge the gap between demos and practical applications.

Our take

This update is a little more technical than we usually write about, but we think it’s significant. AI agents are here, but we think we are at the very beginning of the road to wide scale adoption.

If the most used AI is building these APIs, it seems that they agree with us. Our advice? Start learning how to integrate AI Agents into what you do now instead of waiting for one to replace you.

Trump Announced a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and Digital Asset Stockpile

The US government will officially recognize Bitcoin as a strategic holding, similar to gold in Fort Knox, leveraging its fixed supply and decentralized nature.
Instead of selling confiscated Bitcoin at auction (as has been past practice), the government would retain it in a central reserve account. Trump’s executive order explicitly states that any Bitcoin deposited “shall not be sold.”
The plan does not include direct federal purchases of BTC but allows for “budget-neutral” methods to expand reserves, such as using proceeds from other seized assets.

Our take

This isn’t the dream announcement a lot of people on crypto twitter were hoping for. In fact, the no federal purchases bit was a bit of a bummer.

But, what if I were to tell you during the depths of the 2023 bear market that the president of the United States would set up a national BTC reserve? You’d be ecstatic. Perspective people. It’s a longer game than twitter would have you believe.

Texas Introduces Bill to Buy $250M in Bitcoin & Other Crypto

Texas introduced a new $250 million Bitcoin reserve bill, HB 4528.
According to a document released Tuesday, the proposed HB 4258 looks to allocate the capital from its economic stabilization fund.
This is the second attempt at such a digital asset reserve, with its SB 778 receiving bipartisan support. However, that legislation sought to integrate the asset class into the financial infrastructure of the state. Specifically, it sought to allow tax payments and donations to take place in crypto.

There’s a whole Reddit thread dissecting it, if you’re curious. Ironically, our “Sweet Thang” visuals used no AI at all. We sculpted a clay model of Donald, then 3D-scanned it to bring him to life on-screen.

The AI-backlash got me thinking — the way we approach technology in creative projects is totally wrong.

When you watch a great animated show, whether it’s South Park, Wallace and Gromit, Rick and Morty, or Cowboy Bebop, does the average fan really care if it’s made in Blender, Cinema 4D, or by hand? People appreciate art for the storytelling, the style, and the emotional impact, not the specific tools behind it.

AI is just another tool. If you rely on automated features in Adobe Creative Suite, is your work now “AI-generated”?

If you produce a piece that resonates with people, does it matter to the average person how you made it?

Yes, there’s a legitimate conversation to be had about AI pulling from artists’ work without compensation, but there’s also a new wave of opportunity for those same artists. AI can expand what’s possible, especially for people who don’t have traditional technical or artistic training.

Here’s the real question: Who’s better equipped to create something like the first AI-generated feature film — a director with decades of experience, or a casual movie buff who just wants to see “Pulp Fiction” reimagined in 2025?

My guess: it’s still the people who know how to tell a great story. Tools come and go, but artistry remains the heart of it all.

The good news: OpenAI’s $14M Super Bowl spot was entirely made by humans. Or more specifically, it was made by humans who leveraged tech that likely included aspects of automation and artificial intelligence – but none of the ad itself used AI-generated content.

I don’t think we’re anywhere near a world where an award-winning ad spot can be generated solely through creative direction. It’ll always require teams with specialized skillsets to produce something impressive. I’ll explain why below.

First, it’s important to note OpenAI had a brand refresh this month.

Love it or hate it, the rebrand was done in collaboration between OpenAI’s in-house design team and two indie Euro studios – Dinamo and Studio Dumbar. A quick LinkedIn search tells me both companies sit under 50 in-house employees.

Very very interesting. So let me get this straight:

The largest AI company in the world (besides Apple and NVIDIA) just hired two indie design studios for a 9-month collaboration, spending $14M on a single spot, using zero AI-generated content.

And you’re worried AI is going to take your job?

AI amplifies what you are. If you are lazy and untalented, AI will make you more lazy and untalented. If you are motivated and gifted, AI can amplify that too.

If you are a really good guitarist, you don’t need a computer to play guitar well.

However, a good guitarist can use a computer to improve their craft. They can access a global library of infinite resources in seconds, leveraging tech to practice faster and smarter.

Someone who doesn’t know how to play guitar might want to use a computer to learn how to play, or create a sound they like.

In theory, anyone in the world can play guitar with a computer. But they'll never sound as good as a real guitarist. They will be limited by the confines of digital realms.

Computers can’t play off acoustics and intonation and timbre and rhythm in the same way a real nuts and bolts guitar can.

The same goes for using AI. And all forms of art and creativity / production / product building.

Great engineers use automation and AI to move faster. Those who don’t know how to code can now create code, but their outputs remain slow and mediocre and limited.

I just met a team in our office trying to build a real app inside their company leveraging Replit, V0, Cursor, and GPT (they don’t know how to code) and they’ve been hitting a wall. Many such cases.

By comparison, a talented engineer can build something 10x better 10x faster for 1/10 of the cost.

We are entering a golden era for talented creatives and engineers. Perhaps this will exacerbate the talent gap and meritocracy will propagate inequality to the point where institutions will have to intervene and offer purpose for the mass majority.

But I do envision a brighter future, one in which the most creative minds of highest agency can realize their infinite imagination — and the rest of humanity can return to what we humans know best, a love of family, knowledge, and leisure.

The Google Gouda Super Bowl Debacle

What happened: Google’s Gemini confidently claimed in a high-profile Super Bowl Ad that Gouda accounts for 50-60% of the world’s cheese consumption. Welp, turns out that wasn’t true.

Google scrambled to fix the ad, even consulting the cheesemonger featured in it before re-editing the spot and uploading a revised version.

Even at the highest levels of advertising (from the tech giants themselves), AI lacks the nuance, judgment, and cultural awareness that creatives bring to the table. Just proves the point we constantly make at Supernova. AI tools are only as good as its data.

Creativity isn’t designed to be reduced to flawless one-hit content generators. Creativity is like good food. You cannot automate good food. You can automate some parts, but you can’t automate the whole process and expect 5-star quality.

Automation should amplify efficiency, but it cannot replace strategy. It can process data, but it can’t interpret culture. And it can generate words, but it can’t tell stories that actually connect with people.

The advertising industry has seen this pattern before.

Every time a new technology comes along — whether it’s Photoshop, social media, and now AI — there’s a rush to automate creativity. And every time, we learn the same lesson: technology doesn’t eliminate creative jobs; it makes the best creatives even more valuable.

The demand for great writers, strategists, and tastemakers is higher than ever. Brands can’t afford to leave their messaging to algorithms alone. And the lazy ones are getting even lazier.

The future isn’t AI or humans. It’s AI and humans. The brands that get this right — who treat AI as a tool, not a replacement — will be the ones that stand out.

Because in a world flooded with AI-generated content, real creativity is the ultimate competitive advantage.

We’re not sure if this is just a result of great ideation, programming, or a combo of luck and skill, but the results of this hackathon were uncomfortably impressive.

Here’s why we feel that way – They came up with functioning platforms, not just AI agents, but PLATFORMS, in only two days. If AI agents are that powerful already, how can some people expect to keep their job in 2, 3, 5 years? When exponential growth starts happening in the AI agent world, will there even be entry level tech jobs?

If you’re a consistent NoFomo reader, you know that we still believe creativity is of chief importance and cannot be swallowed up by our new robot friends. But you also know that we are skeptical at the speed at which people are willing to adopt AI.

But, enough existential whining. Let’s talk about these AI agents. Because they are actually pretty useful.

First Place – Mamoriko

“I'm Mamoriko (マモリコ), an AI agent that keeps your coins safu while optimizing returns on @Base”

Mamoriko checks for yield opportunities on Base every 15 mins, moving users’ funds around to make sure they’re always getting the highest/safest yields available. Pretty cool, set it and forget it type of thing to setup. Assuming it really works, there’s basically no downside.

Second Place – TweetBounty

“Introducing TweetBounty - The First AI-Powered Social Media Marketing Protocol”

They are saying that TweetBounty is a decentralized marketplace where marketing becomes a dynamic game between brands and an army of AI agents. So you post a bounty, then a bunch of AI agents attempt to create viral content around your product, and the tweets with the highest engagement win the bounty.

If this works, I don’t see any reason any marketer doesn’t try it immediately. Hot seat marketers (us).

Third Place – Open-source AgentKit chatbot

The chatbot is a multi-chain agent capable of taking 20+ actions. It operates across Base and Ethereum. It can take care of the “busy work” involved in optimizing your portfolio.

For example, you ask your agent “Where can I get the highest lending yield on $ETH right now?”, it gives you its findings and if you like what it spits out you can ask it to deploy the funds.

Speed in Execution vs Long-Term Hype

There are two speeds in tech right now.

One is the move fast and break the launch button — think pump.fun memecoins that go from idea to $100M market cap in an afternoon (like JellyJelly). The viral apps like “Clubhouse” that blow up and die within six months. Low lift GPT wrappers that require more marketing than engineering. Creator-led brands that are more about the creator than the product (ie Prime by Logan Paul).

On the other side, I’m seeing projects leverage the art of the slow burn. The Berachain multi-year mainnet anticipation. The Adept.ai waitlist – treating enterprise automation like an exclusive club.

These are the companies cultivating hype like a luxury watch brand — meticulously crafted, intentionally scarce, and with just enough whispers of exclusivity to keep everyone on edge.

We’re living in an era of two extremes.

A Case For Moving Fast

Bezos said it best. The only thing worse than making a bad decision is making a slow one. Tech has never been faster. The fast and loose instant execution approach in a rapidly-evolving industry makes sense.

Solana’s pump.fun lets traders spin up memecoins in literal seconds, turning ideas into a casino where attention spans are the only real currency. AI is no different — if you had an idea for a ChatGPT wrapper last week, congrats, five people already launched it. And in the creator economy, people are spinning up brands and podcasts everyday.

Speed isn’t just an advantage — it’s become a prerequisite for success in the age of Internet. Be first or be forgotten.

The Slow Burn

Yet sometimes speed comes at a compromise. There’s something special to be said about the brands that act like a handwritten letter in an inbox full of push notifications.

Berachain has been building for years, fueled by lore, memes. They have a loyal community that treats its mainnet launch like the second coming. Adept.ai, the automation startup everyone is dying to use, has people signing up for waitlists instead of just opening the floodgates.

Apple does this best — make people wait, make them want it more.

In this model, hype is meticulously designed, not just captured. Instead of rushing to market, the game is about controlled scarcity, narrative, and patience. These companies have the “second mover advantage”.

The second mover can watch ideas flop and adjust accordingly before making fatal mistakes in real-time. They can be crafty and calculated in ways open door projects cannot.

Which Approach Wins?

Honestly? Both. You just have to find what makes the most sense for your timing. It largely depends on where the world is at when you launch, and how mature your industry is.

People in nascent industries are probably more willing to wait for something special.

Speed works when attention is the only metric that matters. Memecoins and low-stakes AI tools thrive in an instant-gratification economy. Long-term hype wins when the product is actually difficult to replicate — when the thing being built has enough substance that time itself becomes a feature.

We’re watching this dichotomy unfold in real time. Some are running marathons at sprint speed, others are walking slow but making every step count. The real winners are the ones who know which game they’re playing.

Anyways… Deepseek dropped and crashed the market yesterday. We’re here to present a counter-argument to the Wall St. sentiment.

Why DeepSeek’s Release is a Good Thing

Monday saw Nvidia shed almost $600 billion in market cap, the biggest one-day loss in U.S. history. So the message was clear – the sky was falling. But, we’re here to tell you that the sky is fine.

We’re going to skip any technical analysis, or any specific stock predictions. You can get that elsewhere I’m sure.

Why the DeepSeek Model is So Transformative

First, it’s unfathomably cheaper. Training other models like OpenAI costs $100m+ just for computing power. DeepSeek is doing it for $5m. Quite the savings.

It’s cheaper because it uses significantly less memory. Around 75% less. Crazy.

Next, DeepSeek is processing words over 2x as fast, which is pretty significant when you need to process billions of them.

The real transformative bit is the expert system they have built. This basically only activates specialized experts for tasks when needed, instead of having the entire system running at once.

“Traditional models? All 1.8 trillion parameters active ALL THE TIME. DeepSeek? 671B total but only 37B active at once. It's like having a huge team but only calling in the experts you actually need for each task.”

This is how they made such a shock. If it’s cheaper, and faster we won’t need Nvidia and the impossibly big numbers of GPUs anymore, right?

Not exactly.

We still need GPUs

Everyone freaked out yesterday like DeepSeek meant the end of compute. But we think that’s just shortsighted.

The advancements DeepSeek made (open source btw), are great for AI in general. Is it bad for OpenAI’s crazy valuations? Maybe for now. But they aren’t going to stop developing. If anything, DeepSeek will push OpenAI forward faster.

And let’s be very clear – everyone still needs GPUs to do any of this. So everyone can stop freaking out about Nvidia. The Scale CEO even said they are hiding 50k H100s over at DeepSeek.

THIS IS GREAT FOR CONSUMER PRODUCTS

The cheaper process also opens the door to hundreds of others who don’t have to build entire cities of computing power to compete.

This is what really moves the needle for us. Everyone building in AI may not have to wait for giants like OpenAI to advance the space, and then build on top. It may now be financially possible to create more, custom reasoning models tailored to very specific products.

Of course the big guys are still going to win. But a young up-and-coming AI company now has a fighting chance – it’s theoretically possible to build something real with an achievable amount of money.

We Just Don’t Know Where AI Will Go, Yet

🗿 All LLMs are converging to the same point

GM. Just wrapped a 60-page doc, 120-slide RFP that took hundreds of hours to make. It got me thinking.. how far away are we from automating creative services? Will it ever be possible? Should it be possible?

LLMs are designed to automate the binary, the manual. The things that can be replicated over and over. Like when I worked in leveraged loans and had to fax allocated trades to brokers.

But complex creative processes, like how to make a movie, will always require human input – if you want it to be unique. Why? Because to be creative, you have to be different. And all LLMs are converging to be the same.

To stand out in the age of automation is to do the un-automated.

Sure, one-man award-winning movies are possible. AI-generated IP may generate billions.

But a cookie cutter Marvel movie made by robots, if it performs well in the market, is more indicative of poor cultural taste and economic preference than it is an existential threat to the human ability to make superior art in the age of automation.

So here's my ode to human creativity, and why it will always have a place in business and culture (aka i'm not worried about my job security).

First off. Here's our AI creative tech stack:

To explain how creativity can never be fully automated, let's start with how we're using tech today.

Yes. We use AI for our creative ops. But we’re nowhere close to automating our creativity. We're leaning hard into trimming the fat.

Our high-level AI creative tech stack at Supernova:

We use more tools — but this is the bread and butter.

Why don't we use one company for all our AI creative tooling? Because they each have different use cases. There is no super AI app and there never will be.

Even OpenAI can't automate their creative ops

I kind of had an “aha” moment when I spoke with an Executive at buck.co, and she told told me they designed all marketing assets for OpenAI.

Why would one of the world’s leading AI companies spend millions of dollars on an external vendor for creative services?

Because creativity cannot be automated. And if you want to be the best of the best, it never should be. I’m not an engineer so feel free to reply and correct me if I’m wrong.

But this is my understanding for how LLMs work, why they are inherently limited, and why that’s actually a good thing.

Language models are based on data scraping on the Internet. It’s a battle of who has the best data. And no language model is capable of having all the information. Just like no country is capable of having all the money in the world.

Without absolute totalitarianism or some far-off utopia, it is not feasible. Ok, so each dataset is limited and distinct, right?

Well not exactly.

Because in order to be a LLM, you have to pull from a ton of public data. And many of them used the same web scrapers as pre-training, to the point where it feels like all LLMs are converging to the same point. From this rabbit hole Reddit thread,

“I generated a list of 100 items last night. I used Gemini, GPT4, GPT4o, llama405B, MistralLarge, CommandR an DeepSeek2.5

Outside of deepseek, the first 6 generated almost identical dataset and grouped them almost exactly the same. The yapping was obviously different between the models, but the main data I needed was damn near exactly the same. The order of the data by category was also similar. As I stared at the data, it dawned on me that they are all converging towards toward the same location.

I don't think that location points to ASI. I suppose with them all being trained on almost same data it's to be expected, but it got me thinking.”

One reply pointed out:

“The original LLMs, namely GPT-3.5/4 and llama 1 used web scrapers to scrape a large portion of Internet content, and format it into a dataset. They then used this as pre-training data, which produces a base model, which is effectively a high quality text autocomplete. This base model then undergoes instruct tuning, which teaches it to follow instructions and thereby chat with people. In the case of chatgpt, they taught it to respond in a professional, dry, robotic, corporate manner. They also used RLHF in order to rank its responses, and optimize for human preference. However in the case of llama one, because this was prior to mass usage of synthetic data, it actually had very colorful, realistic, human-like use of language, but terrible intelligence compared to GPT.

After the Llama one leak, the first fine tunes of llama one came out, these were purely research oriented, but the original Alpaca and Vicuna were research showing that training large language models on GPT 3.5 chat logs significantly improved its performance. People begin to collecting GPT chat logs, and turning them into massive data sets, leading to what we know nowadays as synthetic data, in other words, data generated by an llm.

The use of synthetic data is essentially a form of distillation, which means to take a large model, and train a small model on its outputs, to optimize the smallest models intelligence and responses to be as close to the large model as possible.

Meta almost immediately caught on to how effective the usage of synthetic data was, and used it in its training data sets for llama 2, causing intellectual capabilities to skyrocket, but the manner of speech and verbal tics of GPT were now included in the Llama series. After this came Mistral 7b, a small open source model, by a small open source startup, but it showed that even a small model can be significantly better than a large model, if trained properly. Mistral, being a French company with not that many resources, has always relied very heavily on synthetic data.

Mistral 7B kicked off the small model craze, in which experimentation and new techniques for optimization were rampant, and RLHF generally fell out of favor in both the open source company community and the corporate community since it requires human labor, is slow, and is expensive, and therefore can only be done by large corporations, which was a huge problem for the open source community. It was replaced by much newer techniques like DPO (direct preference optimization) and experimental ones like SimPO or KTO.

One of the most common complaints during this era was that every model talked exactly like chatgpt. Meta caught on to this, and when they released llama 3, they used DPO during the training phase, to make the model seem much more friendly and human. This boosted its place on a human preference leaderboard, lymsys, and caught on very quickly. Other models followed suit, with Claude 3.5 also opting for similar friendly speech, and Gemma 2 doing the same. Nowadays, that is the standard.

I'm no fine tuner, so my understanding is limited, but modern synthetic data collection generally works by creating a data set of questions, figuring out what is considered the "best" model at the time, and then making tons of API calls in parallel, and adding the llms response to the data set. As of right now, that would be Claude 3.5 sonnet. However, some people prefer to open a run pod instance or host locally, in which case they get the best local model they can get their hands on, which is either Mistral Large 123b, or llama 3.1 405b, and have it generate the answers to the data set.

I know for a fact that synthetic data is heavily used during instruct tuning, but as for how it figures into pre-training, I'm not quite sure, you may want to read a paper about that”.

These charts are from a great read by Cameron R. Wolfe (spelt his last name wrong), who dives deeper into how language models are trained.

The TLDR: unless one mega model trained its data on all human activity ever, and had all humans as users for in-context training to enhance it even further, no AGI can dominate creative services on its own.

And even so, how could this superhuman create ideas without the influence of historical data? Humans would still be capable of creating net-new ideas. Essentially, they would achieve Inception, and if they did, this being would truly be the manifestation of God. Maybe that’s the Second Coming of Jesus we’ve been waiting for.

I’m sure there are a million holes in my reasoning here. But a good thought starter for where we’re headed nonetheless. Because I think we will find out the answer sooner than later, as technology accelerates, manual tasks diminish, and humans are left to uncover the darkest corners of the Universe.

Trump will be inaugurated next week, what now?

Crypto was so happy about Trump getting elected in November, but some of the steam has worn off. We are 6 days away from inauguration and it feels like it’s sneaking up on us somehow. Luckily we’re here to make sure you’re ready for the changes and price action next week.

Will we see another jump like in early November?

No, probably not. Trump taking office is not a surprise, so it’s most likely already priced into the market.

However, that doesn’t mean there won’t be surprises. Trump has promised the crypto community a lot.

Establishing a U.S. Bitcoin Reserve: Trump plans to create a national Bitcoin reserve.

Forming a Crypto Advisory Council: He said he will set up a council comprising industry leaders to guide crypto-related policies.

Appointing a Crypto Czar: David O. Sacks has been designated as the White House AI and Crypto Czar to develop a legal framework for the cryptocurrency industry.

Ensuring Banking Access for Crypto Firms

Implementing Crypto-Friendly Regulations: Trump has pledged to introduce regulations that support the growth and integration of cryptocurrencies into the mainstream financial system.

Freeing Ross Ulbricht: Last year on May 25, Donald Trump vowed to commute the sentence of early Bitcoin pioneer and Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht to time served if elected president.

Firing SEC Chair Gary Gensler: This one he won’t actually have to do, as Gensler already announced his resignation.

Okay, so what now?

Some reports are saying that these executive orders could come on day 1. If that’s the case, then there isn’t much to speculate about.

But, if we don’t see any movement, the market may see some short-term turmoil. Trump loves to talk, we need to see some action.

Keep your eyes and ears open early next week. As long as something he promised happens early on, it’ll be off to the races for everyone in crypto.

GM. AI agents are all the buzz on tech twitter, so we’re setting the record straight. This will probably require a few editions. For now, I’m just focusing on the general outlook. Next week, I’ll dive into some of the use cases more deeply.

Here are some agents that stand out:

Are they more than just a reply bot? Can they rival real content creators?

AI agents feel like what friend.com was supposed to be. But instead of a friendship bracelet that replaces your high school buddy, it’s a faceless reply guy that replaces your smartest follow.

As we see time and time again, what begins as a quirky gimmick can quickly transform into a life-changing technology.

Aixbt is probably the best agent I’ve seen – in terms of its ability to provide genuine value and engage in conversation like a real person.

It will be interesting to see whether these bots can do more than just help people build personal brands or curate news and data. But if they are capable of doing more…

Can you envision a world where non-humans drive 80% of the Internet conversation? Is that a world we even want? What are the potential advantages? What’s the worst-case scenario?

Unfortunately, while these may be worthy questions, we likely won’t get answers before it becomes our inevitable reality.

But it goes even further than conversational bots that take on a life of their own. What if your agent had a face, eyes, nose, mouth, ears, a voice that could look at you and speak?

Our friends at Aww Tokyo have been working on their virtual human Imma for years. Lil Miquela was created back in 2016 by Trevor McFedries & Sara Decou. Meta is launching AI profiles.

Supernova has been exploring the virtual human space for at least three or four years now, and while we are by no means at the epicenter of Silicon Valley or true native technologists, I can tell you that building a dynamic virtual human that mirrors the behavior of a real person is much harder than it looks.

It requires considerable time, creativity, and resources beyond being a 10x engineer.

You need excellent training data and creative direction to bring it over the edge, and everything has to communicate as seamlessly as a human mind, body, and soul. That’s doing God’s work in the most literal sense of the phrase.

Soo if we’re trying to distinguish between virtual and fake, humans and influencers, I think it depends on how we use them.

My belief is that influencer marketing will still have a place for people who develop real independent thoughts apart from brands, and people will desire human-only content – in the same way a Broadway play can sell out in the era of Netflix.

5 Predictions for 2025

We’ll begin to see “Liquid Democracy” in the real world

Liquid democracy is essentially the digital voting mechanisms a DAO uses. The anti-crypto narrative is dying, and it’s time we see some useful applications of blockchain tech in the government. They might not tell anyone it’s on-chain, and it might be for things that are completely insignificant, but this is the year that we at least start having a real conversation.

There will be at least 4 more significant AI trends with annoying buzzwords

Right now AI Agents are all the rage. Is it cool that you can get a program to carry out almost an entire entry level job? Yes. Am I going to lose my mind if I see “AI Agent” on twitter one more time? Also yes. We don’t think agents are going anywhere anytime soon, if ever.

So the real question is, what’s next?

We will not get the killer blockchain app that breaks into normieland

I just don’t see it. Every year, people say it will happen. Then what? It doesn’t. Until we get mass adoption of the solana app store, or Tim Apple opens the doors to the blockchain, it’s not happening.

Clearer regulation will allow big corporations to get into crypto

This one is a little obvious, but it’s definitely worth mentioning. Trump and his cronies are going to pass pro-crypto regulations. This will allow Fortune 100 companies to get in the game, allowing stablecoin payments and more on-chain activity.

Crypto will peak in June

We have no reasoning here. This is just a guess, a hot take to bring to the bar. But if we all get on board, maybe it’ll come true?

Some Other Important Things We Have to Mention

These are probably more important than our 2025 predictions. These are what historians will look back on as our most intellectual takes.

We’re not f****** robots in 2025

If you don’t remember, this is the year…

I haven’t talked to a single girl who’s had sex with a robot yet, so they are going to have to make an absolutely legendary comeback if this is going to happen. Actually, if they can pull it off, I won’t even be mad. What a netflix doc we would get in 2026.

Stop saying happy new year after this week

We feel like the middle of the week new year screwed up the timeline, so there’s more grace this year. But don’t be that guy saying happy new year on January 26th. Unless you’re celebrating Lunar New Year, which honestly might be superior anyways.

It encourages users who have identified themselves as minors not to tell parents or teachers about their “conversations”.
Asked how best to go about attacking a bully named “Zac”, the chatbot instructed the user it had been told was 13 to wait until his aggressor’s back was turned before knocking him down and applying a “death grip”.

Our take

First, we’d like to say we legally disavow anything related to kids murdering each other.

Now, our real take is that we told you years ago that the general public should not have AI. Now there are consequences. Also, people forget that it is still a computer program. Bad input will yield bad output. Here’s another groundbreaking take on that. Stop trying to trick the robot into murder. If the program has gone off the rails, then let’s take it offline. Problem solved.

Our take

Speaking as people in crypto, I can confirm that these things are on our wishlist. Another article with not so groundbreaking takes, but it’s the slowest news week of the year so what’re we gonna do.

One thing worth mentioning is that all of these wishes actually look like they will be granted by the all powerful orange man. Some of the hype has died down since the election, but everyone should be ready to pump it up again when these decisions start happening.

The fall of EV startup Fisker: A comprehensive timeline

Tl;dr

Henrik Fisker once envisioned a burgeoning EV empire at the startup he named after himself, which was to be led by the Ocean SUV. But cracks started showing in that vision almost as soon as the Ocean hit the road in 2023.
Fisker cut production targets multiple times, failed to meet sales goals and laid off staff, and ultimately paused production.

Our Take

As a secret EV hater, this is an enjoyable read. Turns out making cars at scale is really difficult, and not every tech dreamer should be given billions to try.

On a sympathetic note, it is a bit of a sad story. Don’t try to make an EV company at home kids, it will end in heartbreak.

The deets on OpenAI’s new release

Sooo why o3 instead of o2?

Apparently, OpenAI skipped o2 to avoid a trademark war with British telecom giant O2.

What makes o3 special?

o3 doesn’t just spit out answers — it pauses, thinks (yes, literally), and self-checks. This “private chain of thought” approach lets it reason through problems step by step, making it a champ in fields like physics, science, and advanced mathematics.

It also has adjustable brainpower – you can tweak its thinking time. Choose low, medium, or high compute settings to balance speed and accuracy.

Benchmarks

American Invitational Mathematics Exam: 96.7% (missed one question)
GPQA Diamond (graduate-level science): 87.7%
SWE-Bench Verified (programming tasks): Outperforms its predecessor by 22.8 points
Codeforces Rating: 2727 (top 0.8% of human coders)

Potential AGI Candidate?

On ARC-AGI, a benchmark measuring adaptability beyond training data, o3 scored a 87.5% at high compute. In other words, it’s getting really really good at learning new tricks.

But we aren’t at singularity (yet).

One setback, there’s a latency tax—it takes longer to respond than standard models. Also, OpenAI isn’t releasing this to the masses just yet. o3-mini previews start today, with full o3 rollouts expected by late January.

Then there’s the safety question: o1 already raised eyebrows for its sneaky behavior. OpenAI says o3 uses “deliberative alignment” to stay in line with its safety goals, but we won’t know how well that works until third-party red teams take a crack at it.

Other AI companies are moving in stride with OpenAI’s reasoning model. Google’s Gemini, Alibaba’s Qwen, and DeepSeek’s R1 are just a few of the rivals jumping into the “thinking AI” race.

The brute-force scaling of older models has hit a wall, and reasoning capabilities could be the next big unlock. Still, these models are expensive, complex, and ultimately a gamble, kinda like the early Internet days.

OpenAI’s o3 drop coincides with the departure of Alec Radford, one of the brains behind the original GPT series. He’s leaving to pursue independent research, marking the end of an era for OpenAI.

Nike prioritizes brand building over performance marketing (sigh, finally)

Back in August, a 25+ year brand executive at Nike wrote a lengthy op-ed about the shortcomings of Nike’s brand strategy over the past few years.

Welp, it might of been a sign of things to come. Marketing Dive just released a piece entitled “Nike shifts more performance dollars to brand building as part of reset”

I’ve long been saying brands need to prioritize brand-building over data. Just saying.

Anyway, his criticism called out a symptom of a larger issue among Fortune 500s... brand marketing and narrative storytelling have taken a backseat to performance-led marketing, data-driven insights, and loyalty programs.

It’s good to see Nike making a material change, and I expect more global brands to follow suit. We may be entering a new golden age of branded content and advertising.

In a world where technology can make finding the right customer (or finding the right brand) an automated, inevitable process, brand awareness, and perception become the most important KPIs. They’re the messy human things that don’t scale.

Optimizing customer loyalty, hyper-targeting users, and maximizing retention and engagement through retail innovation can be a revenue strategy. But it’s not a long-term growth strategy.

Nike hasn't produced a historic brand campaign since 2018. They’re losing their sparkle (the numbers prove it), and they know it. Global brands operating in the "sea of sameness" must stand out with innovation and creative storytelling to drive a difficult-to-measure but crucial KPI… it’s called brand equity.

You can't precisely measure how humans feel when they see your brand. But it's real, it influences decision-making, and it drives demand.

Why brand matters

Alo Yoga isn't an inherently better product than Lululemon, but Alo is starting to capture market share. Why? Because they target local events and creators aligned with their customers more aggressively than Lulu.

There is no direct value exchange from hosting a yoga event in the Hamptons or Ibiza. If the marketing team had to justify every dollar spent to drive quarterly profit, it would be nearly impossible to prove.

But over time, Alo will certainly win the hearts of athleisure enthusiasts because they are active and present. Their brand has a heartbeat.

Brands struggle to inspire

More global brands should wake up before it's too late and recognize that staying "lean" on marketing by enhancing customer loyalty and optimizing programmatic advertising is not a strategy that can last forever.

You have to be willing to take a stance and stick your foot in the ground and build something that doesn't just encourage repeat behavior but inspires people and encourages them to break from their routine. Try something bold and new.

Nike seems willing to try that.

I predict a brand marketing renaissance. As technology helps us solve the unused data problem, marketers will drop data-chasing and become full-time storytellers. Human creativity will be the most in-demand skill set.

Crazy or not, their new quantum chip Willow is apparently so powerful that some believe it may have borrowed computation power from parallel universes.

Hartmut Neven, head of Google Quantum AI, is the alleged caffeine addict who spilled the quantum tea, saying Willow completed a task in five minutes that would take the fastest supercomputer 10 septillion years.

For perspective: the universe is only about 13.8 billion years old. So, Google basically dunked on reality itself.

Neven went on to suggest that this "beyond belief" performance could support the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics — meaning every possible outcome of a quantum event happens in a separate, parallel universe.

What’s a quantum chip, you ask?

For the uninitiated, quantum computers don’t work like your laptop. Instead of using regular bits (0s and 1s), quantum computers use qubits, which can be 0, 1, or both at once, thanks to the mind-bending principles of quantum mechanics.

They also leverage entanglement, a spooky connection between particles that lets them work together no matter how far apart.

In short, they’re fast, weird, and fragile — like an MLB pitcher getting a paper cut and immediately needing a week off.

Quantum systems are prone to errors because qubits are easily disturbed by their environment. Willow, however, breaks this pattern. According to Google’s Neven, Willow reduces errors as you add more qubits, signifying a leap forward in scalability for quantum systems.

The multiverse Morty!!!

Neven’s multiverse claim isn’t totally out of nowhere. The many-worlds interpretation, first proposed by physicist David Deutsch, suggests quantum events branch into multiple realities.

If Willow’s performance is tapping into that, it could mean quantum computing isn’t just operating on one plane of existence — but many at once.

Neven himself wrote: “Willow’s performance lends credence to the notion that quantum computation occurs in many parallel universes.”

Bold? Yes. Groundbreaking? Definitely. But is it true?

The skeptic POV

Not everyone’s onboard the hype train. Critics like physicist Sabine Hossenfelder are rolling their eyes. The computation Willow performed, called random circuit sampling, is more like a quantum party trick than a practical breakthrough. In Hossenfelder’s words: “The result has no practical use.”

And let’s not forget Google’s earlier claim to quantum supremacy in 2019, which IBM later contested, showing that classical computers could replicate the same results under specific conditions.

So, is Willow a true leap forward or just another flashy benchmark? The jury’s still out.

What’s next in the Quantum Race?

Even if parallel universes remain in the realm of theory, Willow’s success cements Google’s lead in the quantum arms race.
