The Ruling on the Field

The Senate passed a big new rulebook for college sports on Monday.

Senators voted 77-22 for the Protect College Sports Act. Both parties joined forces to play defense on what Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) calls college sports’ “Wild West” era.

Until recently, college athletes couldn’t be paid. Then a string of court cases opened the bank so athletes can earn money from their name, image, and likeness (NIL) or be paid by their schools directly. NIL deals could be things like signing a sneaker deal or starring in a pizza commercial. Players were also allowed to switch schools through the “transfer portal” as often as they wanted. This all caused bidding wars and nonstop roster shuffling.

Cruz and Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) teamed up on the bill. Here’s what it would do:

• Protect the NCAA from lawsuits when it enforces rules on transfers or how many years athletes can play

• Make athletes’ right to earn NIL money official U.S. law

• Limit players to transferring just once without sitting out a season

• More than double what some schools can pay players (but some funds depend on schools meeting academic goals)

Critics, including Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), say the bill reverses power that athletes just won in court. They also point out it caps player pay but not coaches’ pay. See how your state’s senators voted.

The bill now gets handed off to the House of Representatives, which is sidelined until after November’s elections. If they don’t pass it before the new Congress hits the field in January, the Senate will have to go back to the starting line.

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
Regardless of your kids’ athletic talents (and how they may be compensated for them), believing parents can emphasize working hard and glorifying God in everything (Colossians 3:23).

Is your kid the next GOAT? Encourage them to work hard and glorify God. Does your kid barely make it off the bench? Encourage them to work hard and glorify God. Is your kid more of a mathlete? Encourage them to work hard and glorify God.

We can rest knowing our hard work and championship wins don’t merit God’s love. He already loves us through and through, and any talent or tenacity is His gift.

How can I model loving an enemy when discussing this story?
By being a team player, no matter who’s on your team.

Whether it’s drafting bills in Congress, cheering alongside the other parents at a basketball game, or serving faithfully in kids’ ministry, when Christians set aside their differences and their pride to work toward a common goal, they’re displaying the unconditional love that Christ lavishes on His people.

Our calling is the same no matter our context: “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:2-3 NIV).

• Take some time this week to celebrate the many gifts and abilities God has given you and your children. At dinner or before bed, make a list together of things you have a knack for, and thank God for them together, asking Him to help you glorify Him as you do them.

• Memorize Colossians 3:23, “Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people.” (CSB)

• Pray for Congress as they make laws for college sports and all the American people: Righteous Lawgiver, You have created us for Yourself, and You’ve charted the path to flourishing. You are holy on Your throne, resplendent with glory, ruling by a perfect law and presiding over an eternal kingdom free from sin. But Capitol Hill is unlike Your throne room. Give wisdom to our fallen leaders legislating in a fallen world. Direct their steps so they can direct a diverse country toward flourishing and goodwill and peace, serving out of love instead of performing for their own gain. Give them favor among their colleagues, so they might negotiate in good faith. And when they disagree on the best way forward, may they model gentleness, respect, and humility. Strengthen them for long, hard days, and bless the work of their hands. Amen.

Bans and Boycotts

The White House kicked three news outlets out of its press pool last week. Then other networks packed up their floaties cameras in protest.

The White House press pool is a rotating group of journalists from a wide variety of news outlets. Their job is to report on the president’s day-to-day activities (like his official paparazzi). They then share their audio, video, and photos with other outlets. It’s a system that keeps a record of presidential happenings without crowding the White House with cameras.

Last Friday, President Trump banned CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House. The next day, the Secret Service denied entry to journalists from the three news orgs and took away their press badges.

Trump said the ban wasn’t because of a single story, but several “over the past few years.” He warned that “other fake news media outlets” might be next.

Then this week, the ousted outlets sued. They argued the ban went against their First Amendment right to a free press. And when CNN was scheduled for pool duty this week, the TV pool’s other networks didn’t cover for them, but paused pool coverage instead. The group said, “No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.”

Trump says he’s not targeting “free press,” only “fake news.” On Monday, the White House launched Trump TV, a 24/7 YouTube livestream of presidential coverage.

Yesterday, a judge heard from both sides. A government lawyer argued that “access to the White House is a privilege, not a right.” The judge hasn’t ruled yet.

ABOVE ALL, LOVE
Whether you’re critical of your government or think it’s unfairly criticized, the command for Christians is to love neighbors and enemies alike. That requires speaking about others with dignity and respect, even if we feel like they haven’t earned it.

“With the tongue we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in God’s likeness. Blessing and cursing come out of the same mouth. My brothers and sisters, these things should not be this way… Who among you is wise and understanding? By his good conduct he should show that his works are done in the gentleness that comes from wisdom.”

What do I want my kids to know in light of this story?
Some adults worry about having fewer journalists the way some kids worry about turning off the lights. 

Journalists can be like lights, showing what might otherwise stay secret. That transparency encourages leaders (and really everyone) to do their jobs with integrity. Just like kids tend to behave better when they know an adult is watching… especially mom or dad. Some adults worry that without lots of light from journalists, politicians might make bad choices.

The Bible says that God is light, and He is going to expose all darkness when Jesus returns (1 Corinthians 4:5). We can have hope, because the Light of the World walks with us and lives in us.

What might my kids misunderstand about this story?
President Trump kicked out the news outlets because he says they are biased. 

Bias in journalism can be a problem because it casts shadows on the truth. Believers want to be people who walk in truth’s light. Still, we all have preferences and opinions and biases; it’s part of being human. 

Only God knows everything and is totally impartial. The best we can do is always seek the truth, shine light wherever we go, surround ourselves with friends who illuminate our blind spots, and trust God to make everything known at the right time (1 John 1:5–10). 

• Younger kids: walk into a super dark room where you haven’t been for a while, set a three-minute timer, and see how much you can figure out about the room without the lights on. Then turn on the lights and see what you missed. Did the light make a big difference? Older kids: read the same news story from a center source, a right or right-leaning source, and a left or left-leaning source (you can use this chart to choose your three). Discuss the differences you find. What do those differences show you about the sources’ biases?

• Memorize 1 John 1:7, “If we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin” (CSB).

• Pray for those tasked with keeping the public informed: God of Light, guide us by the lamp of Your Word. Give reporters and editors boldness to ask tough questions, shrewdness to uncover the truth, wisdom to tell fact from opinion, and humility to admit when they get it wrong. Extinguish any selfish ambition, love of money, or fear of man, and illuminate truth, fairness, and justice. Spirit of Truth, snuff out any bias in my own heart. Fan the flames of Your Word in the furnace of my soul, that I may see this truth clearly: You show no partiality, nor should I. Help me to look around with discerning eyes, so that I may see the light of truth, and cling to You in the dark. Amen.

Rising AI-nxiety

Last week, several experts began sounding alarms on how fast AI is advancing.

First, former AI researcher Jacob Coxon quit his job, then posted a thread on X about why he left. Coxon said the big AI labs are “gambling with our lives” as they race to make AI smarter. A current Anthropic employee agreed. The scientist said the chances that AI “could kill all humans” within the next decade are above 10%. And later in the week, Anthropic’s CEO wrote that AI companies must slow down to prevent “catastrophic damage.”

It’s the threat of “recursive self-improvement” (RSI) that has AI leaders sweating. With RSI, AI could improve itself faster than humans can keep up. That could make sci-fi scenarios like hacked power grids or deadly weapons more likely.

Others are skeptical of the skepticism. Some critics wondered if Coxon’s post was a “well-funded PR operation.” Nvidia’s CEO (his company makes chips that power AI) said labs may be using fear to sell a cybersecurity product. And President Trump argued that there are already government rules protecting AI. He said adding more would help China in the AI race.

Still, major AI companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google are taking steps to make things safer. Anthropic and OpenAI promised to let outside inspectors keep an eye on their companies. Meanwhile, Anthropic reportedly stopped attempts to use AI to build biological weapons (weapons that use diseases to harm plants, animals, or humans).

ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE
As tech leaders express fear of their own products, it can make the waters of life feel extra choppy. In the turmoil, hold onto your anchor, Christ. God is not worried. Nothing can disrupt His plans or the secure promise of Heaven for followers of Christ.

“Because God wanted to show his unchangeable purpose even more clearly to the heirs of the promise, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
We’re made in the image of God, but that image isn’t tied to our capabilities. The Bible ties that image to our calling as His creation. 

It also isn't about being the smartest thing around. Our “made in His image” status doesn’t change if AI ever starts to “out-think” us, because it’s not tied to our impressive brainpower. 

God invited humans (and only humans) to relate with Him and co-rule His world (Genesis 1:28). 

Even if AI becomes very, very, very advanced, it will never take away our unique dignity of bearing God’s image to the world. No update, upgrade, or new feat in AI development will change our calling or identity.

What response to this story do I want to model for my children?
Living in biblical hope.

When people start talking about the chances that AI could wipe out humanity, it's easy to either spiral into fear or begin to quibble about whether things are really that serious. But our response doesn’t have to be anxiety or skepticism. It should be biblical hope.

Christians’ unique hope says: we’re putting our trust in the God who has rescued His people against the odds before and who promises to do it again once and for all: “Look, I am making everything new” (Revelation 21:5 CSB). May the truth that comes from this unflinching hope in God fill your home, allowing you to view headlines about AI (whatever they are) with steady, unshakeable peace. 

• Try out a “big” conversation with your family. AI invites questions like "What does it mean to be a human being?" or "What does it mean to be made in the image of God?" or "What is consciousness?" Pose the questions, keep it fun, and don’t pressure yourself to have all the answers. 
  

• Memorize Revelation 21:4-5, “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away. Then the one seated on the throne said, ‘Look, I am making everything new’” (CSB).

Clancy Case

Lindsay Clancy’s six-week murder trial ended without a decision.

Lindsay Clancy is a 36-year-old former nurse. She admitted to killing her three young children before attempting to kill herself in 2023. But Ms. Clancy pleaded “not guilty” to three first-degree murder charges.

Her lawyers argued that she can’t be held responsible for the murders because she had a rare mental disorder called postpartum psychosis. Postpartum psychosis (PPP) can cause people to see or hear things, become fearful without a good reason, or change their behavior. In severe cases, people with PPP might try to hurt themselves or their kids.

The prosecution argued that she knew what she was doing, knew it was wrong, and that the murders were planned.

All 12 people on the jury had to agree to reach a verdict. They debated for seven days, but one thought she should be blamed for the murders, while the other 11 had doubts. After three failed attempts to agree, the judge declared a mistrial. That means it ended without a decision… no “guilty” or “not guilty.”

If the jury had found her guilty, Clancy could have gone to prison for the rest of her life. If they had found her not guilty, she still wouldn’t have gone free. She would likely have been sent to a psychiatric hospital, similar to where she is now. 

Clancy will wait at the hospital while prosecutors decide their next move. They can take the case to court again, make a deal, or drop the charges. (See this guide on what happens after a mistrial).

CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
The world can be a scary place, but even when things look dark, Christians have hope. Jesus, the servant of God, didn’t do any harm, and He suffered on our behalf so that we can live in the Lord’s peaceful presence forever. Knowing this truth, we can mourn with victims, pray for our enemies, and tell other people about the hope we have.

“Yet he himself bore our sicknesses, and he carried our pains; but we in turn regarded him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds.”

Ask your kids what they have already heard about this story.
This story is heavy and hard in so many different ways. The details of the murder are terrible, and the case raises tough questions about mental health and justice.

Before diving in with your kids, learn what’s weighing on them. As you name specific feelings and mourn together, remember: there is no pain, no darkness, with which our Sinless Savior is not familiar.

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:15-16 NIV).

What gospel lesson can be taught through this story?
Our unbelieving neighbors don’t have an answer that explains or overcomes evil. But our faith says that wickedness runs right through each of us and holds sway in our world (1 John 5:19); it’s a result of our rebellion from our Maker (Colossians 1:21); and our Creator Himself has disarmed evil by offering His Son (Colossians 2:15).

While we still feel the pain of sin, its time is almost up. Our mission invites us into Spirit-empowered joy that’s rooted not in our world’s circumstances, but in an unshakeable hope.

• Have your kids write down one or two emotions this story raises in them, then ask them to find two passages of Scripture that address those hurts. (Check out the concordance that’s in the back of most Bibles for help!)
  

• Memorize Isaiah 53:5, “But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds” (CSB).
  

• Pray with us: God in Heaven, why did You stand back in the moment of tragedy? Why did You linger so far away? Darkness and gloom have settled; where is the promised light? To You alone, Our Lord, we cry for help. Heal our hurting, broken world. Heal those traumatized by this tragedy, beaten down by the wrongness of the world. Draw near to those who lost what cannot be restored; steady those unsettled by sorrow. In their souls’ raging storm, draw them into refuge and speak Your words of life. To You alone, Our Lord, we cry for help. Heal our hurting, broken world. You alone, O Lord, turn mourning into dancing; You exchange funeral attire for wedding clothes; You swap grief for glory. So we will not grieve as others who have no hope; we will continually come to the Father whose compassion and knowledge and power far outweighs our own, and whose presence clings tightly in heaviest grief. Amen.

Fatal Flooding

Deadly flash floods have hit Nepal, Tibet, and the Grand Canyon.

The flooding in Nepal and Tibet has killed over 1,100 people while more than 4,400 are still reported as missing. The waters came very quickly last Wednesday, rising by about 30 feet in just 30 minutes. A huge piece of a glacier broke off and crashed into a river valley below. It caused what scientists call an “ice-rock avalanche,” which flooded the river downstream (see how a glacier can cause a flood). 

Rescuers are flying helicopters to reach villages that are cut off. They are also racing to find hundreds of power-plant workers. The workers may be trapped in flooded tunnels along the river. There is some good news, though: a school principal quickly canceled class to move 900 kids to safety just before the flood washed the school away.

Across the globe, a few waves of heavy rain caused a “wall of water” to rush through a narrow side canyon of the Grand Canyon on Saturday. It killed two friends visiting from Texas, while a third friend is still missing. Rescuers saved about 80 other people.

Scientists say a wildfire last year burned away plants that usually slow down floods. That may have caused the canyon to be more likely to flood. Saturday’s flood also damaged Grand Canyon National Park’s only water pipeline. Now officials have closed lodging and are limiting water use.

CHRISTIAN RESPONSE
God has not left us helpless in the face of disasters. He hears the prayers of His people, acting for our good and His glory. 

“The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears, and rescues them from all their troubles. The LORD is near the brokenhearted; he saves those crushed in spirit.”

How can I model putting my hope and trust in Christ when discussing this story?
By remembering prayer is always within reach, even when hands-on help isn’t. 

Jesus told us the greatest commandment was to love Him and one another (Matthew 22:34-40). But how do we love people suffering thousands of miles away when our time and resources are limited? With prayer. 

Calling upon the Lord is not just a backup plan when we can’t do more. It’s an act of love we can always do… for anyone, anywhere (1 Timothy 2:1). It’s our act of trust that God sees every bit of suffering, and He’s able to do something about it, even when we can’t.

What might my kids misunderstand about this story?
All of God’s creation is under the curse of sin, even nature. 

Christians walk in the everyday tension of worshiping a completely sovereign God while living in a completely broken world. While nature doesn’t choose to sin, it’s subjected to brokenness and decay because of our sin (Romans 8:20-22). Fires, floods, and other natural disasters are the painful effects of creation’s groaning.

But that groaning won’t last forever. Christ is enthroned above the flood (Psalm 29:10), and He is making all things new (Revelation 21:5).

• Go for a walk as a family and pray for your neighbors. If you see anyone out and about, introduce yourself and ask how you can pray for them.
   

• Memorize Psalm 29:10-11, “The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD sits enthroned, King forever. The LORD gives his people strength; the LORD blesses his people with peace.”
   

• Pray for those affected by recent flooding in the Himalayas and the Grand Canyon: King of Creation, we grieve the ongoing deadly effects of wild elements. We ask that You bring order to wreckage and shine Your light in the darkness. Draw near to all those affected by these floods. For the families who have lost their beloved ones, accompany them in their grief. For the lost, search relentlessly and bring them home. For the rescuers, grant them courage and strength. For the fearful survivors, fill them with Your peace. For those who will rebuild, give fortitude, endurance, and hope. And for the land, tend to it, heal it, and restore its beauty. Amen.

Dolly Parton (1946-2026)

Legendary country music star Dolly Parton died on Tuesday at age 80.

Her nephew broke the news in an Instagram video (hear his whole statement). Later, a spokesperson said Parton died “after a brief battle with cancer.” In May of this year, she canceled a run of six shows in Las Vegas due to “health issues.” 

The “Queen of Country” was a singer-songwriter-actress who rose from rags to riches over a 60-year career. She sold 100M+ records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling female artists ever. Some of her most famous songs are “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You” (Whitney Houston popularized it, but Dolly wrote and sang it first). She also brought her Southern charm to the silver screen in “Steel Magnolias” and “9 to 5.” The icon also built an entertainment empire around her Dollywood theme park in Pigeon Forge, TN.

Dolly’s career was award-winning. She won 11 Grammys and was inducted into both the Country Music and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame. She was as well known for her signature look (see her blonde bouffant + glam makeup) as she was for her music. 

Outside her 9-to-5, Dolly was known for her generosity. Her literacy program, Imagination Library, has given over 300 million books to kids under 5 across the country.

CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
Sudden deaths remind us that human life is brief and fragile. Believers’ hope of resurrection doesn’t mean we don’t grieve real sorrows but reminds us that death will not have the final word. Pray for Dolly Parton’s loved ones and for her fans to experience the comfort and hope of Jesus.

What might my kids misunderstand about this story?
Death raises a lot of questions, many of which are tough to answer. 

While we can’t satisfy sad “why”s, we can teach our kids (and ourselves) that it’s normal to not have all the answers, and it’s very good to take our sadness, longing, and confusion to the God of all comfort. He is sovereign, trustworthy, loving, and near. 

We can also remind them of the truth that can satisfy their souls: Death has been swallowed up in victory (1 Corinthians 15:54). Talking about death opens the door to talking about eternity… and the joy of getting to spend it with the God who loves them more than anyone. 

What response to this story do I want to model for my children?
Leaving a legacy of faith, and discipling them to do the same. 

When a famous person dies, we often look at their legacy: accomplishments, contributions to society, what they were known for. And it begs the question, “What do I want to be remembered for?” and “What do I want to leave behind?” 

If our answer doesn’t include our faith in Jesus, we may want to revisit the question. Whether we’re parents, friends, or grandparents, we have opportunities every day to leave a legacy of faith by sharing the good news of Jesus Christ in our words and deeds.

• Discuss with your kids how they want to be remembered 100 years from now. 
  

• Memorize 1 Corinthians 15:54-55, “Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, death, is your victory? Where, death, is your sting?” (CSB).
  

• Pray for those grieving the loss of Dolly Parton or someone else close to them: Father of Mercies, shower the grieving with comfort as they mourn the loss of this image-bearer. Penetrate loved ones’ sorrow with the hope of Christ. You, O Lord, measure the moments of Your creatures from the smallest to the greatest. Teach me to number my days and keep their end ever before me, that I might learn to fear You and gain wisdom for whatever lifespan You give. Amen. Big Tech Timeout

Meta’s facing the music algorithm.

The company that owns Facebook and Instagram is facing a lawsuit in court. Accusers say Meta is making its apps addictive on purpose (and lying about it), harming youth’s mental health. They also say Meta collects data on kids under 13 without parents’ permission, which is against the law. 

Meta said it “strongly disagrees” with the accusations and evidence will show it tries to protect kids. 

Earlier this month, Meta lost a similar case in New Mexico. A judge ruled the company failed to warn people about the dangers its apps pose to children. Meta was forced to pay almost $1 billion. This case is an even bigger test. If the company loses, they’ll have to pay between $200 billion and $1.4 trillion. They also might have to change their products. Think: no more likes, no more doomscrolling, and enforcing age restrictions.

Plus, this case is federal. The attorneys general from California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey, and 25 other states are who brought the lawsuit. That means the consequences could affect the whole country, not just one state. The trial is expected to last between six and eight weeks.

CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
As courts discuss the effects of social media, it’s a good time to think about how social media affects our lives, relationships, and heart habits. Whatever tools or tech we use, our goal should be to use them wisely and in ways that grow the fruit of the Spirit. 

“Walk by the Spirit and you will certainly not carry out the desire of the flesh… The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
Habits shape our hearts. Like eating lots of veggies can train our taste buds to crave carrots over carrot cake, our habits of attention train our hearts toward Christ’s peace… or toward lesser things.

Paul points to this dynamic when he calls believers to “put off” habits that lead to sin and steal our peace (Colossians 3:8) and to “put on” habits that train us to fix our eyes on Christ and experience His love (Colossians 3:12). 

Ultimately, the Holy Spirit changes our hearts, but we can build habits that help us catch the Spirit’s wind rather than fight Him.

Ask your kids what they have already heard about this story.
CEOs, lawmakers, and judges end up creating the social media landscape, but teens actually live through it. Before you share your wisdom or talk about guidelines for social media use, pause to ask: “How do you feel about social media in your life?” “How do you see it affecting your friends?” “What do grown-ups get wrong about social media?”

By listening first, you earn credibility to ask the next-level questions: “What would you change about your relationship with social media?” “What do you think would happen if your friends chose to take a break for a week?”

• Take an electronics fast and invite your kids to join you (but do it even if they don’t!). Consider starting with turning off the phone for one hour/day, and one day/week. Chat together about the experience.
  

• Memorize Colossians 3:12, “Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience” (CSB).
  

• Pray for teens navigating life with social media: Prince of Peace, while social media battles are being fought in courtrooms and boardrooms, we pray for those scrolling and strolling through this new world. Where feeds have told people they are less than beloved, reinforce Your love. Where loneliness has increased, build communities of knowing. Where anxiety has grown like a weed, tend the soil so peace can flourish. Amen.

Western Colombia was hit by a deadly 7.4 magnitude earthquake on Monday. 

It was the strongest earthquake this century in Colombia. So far, over 250 people have died, more than 2,500 have been injured, and thousands are still missing.

The quake occurred around 7:30 a.m. local time in Chocó, a remote region ~250 miles west of Colombia’s capital city, Bogotá. Tremors could be felt as far as neighboring Ecuador and Panama. More than 1,600 structures were damaged, including 60 collapsed buildings. 

Chocó falls along the Ring of Fire: a giant, horseshoe-shaped path around the Pacific Ocean. It’s home to 90% of the world’s earthquakes and lots (like 450) of volcanoes. Learn more about it here. 

First responders have been searching for survivors among the rubble, but progress has been slow. Many areas close to the quake’s epicenter can only be reached by boat or plane. 

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella, who was sworn in just six days ago, has declared a state of emergency. He said “the entire military and police apparatus” will be used to help bring relief and rescue people who are still missing.

BE DOERS
It’s easy to feel helpless when you hear stories like this, but the Bible promises there is no mightier action we can take than pleading with the God who commands the shifting of tectonic plates. Pray with confidence for the people devastated by this earthquake, confident that our strong, good God hears you.

What gospel lesson can be taught through this story?
Christians look forward to a future where there’s redemption not just for people who trust Jesus, but for creation itself. 

The apostle Paul writes about the beautiful, suffering-free ending that’s coming: “For the creation was subjected to futility​—​not willingly, but because of him who subjected it—in the hope that the creation itself will also be set free from the bondage to decay into the glorious freedom of God’s children” (Romans 8:20-21 CSB).

Just like sin traps people in death, sin traps the earth in decay. But Jesus’s resurrection has sprung the trap, and one day the world will be free from earthquakes, landslides, death, and sorrow. God will make everything new.

What do I want to make sure my kids practice in light of this story?
Gratitude.

It is easy to take basic gifts like running water, electricity, cell service, and a safe trip to school for granted. But human life is fragile, and those basics are not a guarantee.

Make a habit of giving thanks for what you have, because everything good is a gift from God (James 1:17). The apostle Paul says gratefulness is a spiritual discipline: “Be filled by the Spirit: speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music with your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for everything to God” (Ephesians 5:18-20 CSB). 

• Make gratefulness a family habit. List things you’re thankful for before you ask for things in prayer, add to a gratitude list daily in a journal, take the time to write a “thank you” note, or share what you love about your friends and family… get creative.
   

• Memorize Hebrews 12:28-29, “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our ‘God is a consuming fire’” (NIV).
   

• Pray for Colombia’s lost, mourning, first responders, and leaders: Relentless Shepherd, as first responders go boldly into danger, grant them endurance, skill, and success. Bind the wounds of those who have been shaken in body and spirit; comfort those who mourn lost loved ones. Feed those who are suddenly lacking food, work, and community so that they want for nothing. Strengthen weary hands for the long work of rebuilding. Immovable God, set our feet on solid ground, and set our eyes on Your unshakeable kingdom. Thank You, Father, for Your promise of an indestructible world. Prepare us for it, even in our weakness and mortality, growing our reverence and awe by the power of Your Spirit, through Christ our Lord. Amen. (Read the full prayer here.)

Fake Photo Fight

Minnesota is banning technology that allows people to make fake nude images.  

The state’s new law forbids apps and websites from making explicit photos of people using AI (called a “deepfake”). Companies will be fined $500,000 every time a user makes an inappropriate deepfake. The Land of 10,000 Lakes is the first state ever to adopt a law like this. 

Governor Tim Walz (MN-D) signed the law in May, and it went into effect Saturday.

However, Elon Musk’s company xAI sued Minnesota over the law last Monday. xAI supports trying to stop the spread of AI-generated explicit images of real people but argues the law goes too far and its language is too broad. The Grok-maker worries that appropriate images (like some used for “artistic, scientific… educational, [or] medical” purposes) will be lumped in, saying it wouldn’t be fair to fine so steeply for something like that. It also says the law goes against freedom of speech.

xAI wanted MN to hit the brakes on the law, but a judge said no. He said the company should’ve asked sooner (like when the law was signed in May). Since they waited, the judge determined the risk likely wasn’t urgent and scheduled a court date for August 19. He will decide then whether to put the law on pause while the court case plays out.

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
Adolescence is a time of discomfort within our own skin, and deepfake images turn up the anxiety level. As lies about being human amplify, arm your kids with these truths:

• God made them and called his creation “very good” (Genesis 1:26-27, 31).

• Our bodies are designed to worship our Creator (Romans 12:1-2).

• The Lord prizes inner virtue over outward presentation (1 Peter 3:3-4). 

• God Himself took a body to free us from brokenness, cleanse our shame, and redeem both our bodies and our souls. One day, God will make all of us new, and we’ll see ourselves as He does (Philippians 3:21).

What response to this story do I want to model for my children?
Using tech to serve others.

As tech capabilities grow, believers have tough decisions to make about what we will use and how. As you evaluate your usage, consider: Do my choices build others up? Am I just serving myself or helping my neighbor thrive? Because “each one of us is to please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. For even Christ did not please himself” (Romans 15:2-3 CSB).

• Make a list of the digital tech you’re using, then evaluate together: Why do I use this? Is my usage honoring God? What habits need to change?
   

• Memorize Romans 14:13-19 “Let us pursue what promotes peace and what builds up one another” (CSB).
   

• Pray for your family’s use of technology: Maker of makers, we give thanks for those technologies that equip us to work, to learn, to connect, and to serve. Teach us our place in Your kingdom’s pattern, and direct our use of technology to build up others and point to Your good design. Wildfire Weather

France and Spain are battling the largest wildfires their countries have ever seen.

Weeks of back-to-back heat waves and drought meant dangerous fire conditions. An unknown spark lit the fires that have now killed at least five people and forced more than 330,000 to evacuate.

In Spain, fires are burning in two main areas. One is blazing outside Madrid, and the other is on the east coast (see maps). At least one person has died. In France, a fire on the west coast is burning an area four times the size of Paris. Four firefighters have died while on duty.

Firefighters are working around the clock, but the weather is working against them. Temperatures kept climbing this week, with no rain in sight. Plus, the fire in France is making its own weather. The flames built a massive black “fire cloud” (aka a pyrocumulonimbus). That’s a thunderstorm created by extreme fire conditions. The storm’s wind and lightning further feed flames (read our explainer here). 

Wildfires burned across other parts of Europe and in North America over the weekend. Fires charred over one million acres in Oregon. Major highways closed and thousands of people were told to evacuate. In Canada, lightning strikes ignited new fires in British Columbia. Prime Minister Carney said it’s been one of the worst wildfire seasons on record for Canada.

ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE
Tragic weather events and natural disasters remind us that the whole world is not how it should be. In light of this, Christians are called to pray, mourn, and hope for an eternity where there’s redemption not just for people, but for creation itself.

“For the creation was subjected to futility ​— ​not willingly, but because of him who subjected it ​— ​in the hope that the creation itself will also be set free from the bondage to decay into the glorious freedom of God’s children.”

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
God’s world is both good and wild.

In a speech in Job 40-41, God talks with pride about two magnificent but dangerous creatures: Behemoth and Leviathan. God doesn’t pretend they’re tame, and He tells Job they’re part of His good creation. 

Chaotic weather fits the same category. There are good parts of God’s world that can also be untamed: the same fire that heats to warm, feed, and power our lives can also destroy. But God’s promise is to one day defeat the danger: “The Lord… will bring judgment on Leviathan, the fleeing serpent... He will slay the monster that is in the sea” (Isaiah 27:1 CSB).

What gospel lesson can be taught through this story?
Trials are like a fire.

The apostle Peter compares suffering to gold being purified in a fire: “You rejoice in this [hope], even though… you suffer grief in various trials so that the proven character of your faith—more valuable than gold which, though perishable, is refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:6-7 CSB).

The burning doesn’t feel good. But as crazy as it sounds, the Bible tells us to “rejoice” because we know what’s waiting on the other side of suffering: a holier version of ourselves (James 1:2-4) and a future with Jesus more beautiful than we could ever imagine.

• Do some creation care: When we only think about creation through the lens of tragedy, it can twist our perception. Though the natural world is wild and unpredictable, it is also a beautiful and gracious gift. Do something this week to care for God’s creation: pick up some trash, tend to a garden, plant a tree, etc.
   

• Memorize James 1:2-4, “Consider it a great joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you experience various trials, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.” (CSB).
   

• Pray for the land and people affected by these fires: God of the Displaced, gather the French, Spanish, and North American people to Yourself. Wrap Your loving arms around them, providing for what’s been taken and healing where they’ve been hurt. The road to recovery is long; this wildfire has left an angry wound that may take years to heal. Shore up first responders, weary from the battle, to continue fighting flames and searching for the missing. Spur Your people to radical love and hospitality. For those with nothing left to rebuild, may Your church be a refuge and stronghold, offering safety to the suffering and hope to the hopeless. Amen.

What I’m Running Back This Year

Football is Finished

Spain is the king of the soccer world.

Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in extra time (aka overtime) Sunday in New Jersey for their second-ever World Cup win. It was the most-watched soccer game of all time, with ~60M combined English and Spanish viewers. 

After 105 minutes, Ferran Torres finally got a goal past Argentina’s brick wall goalkeeper (watch here). The white and sky blue’s keeper, Emiliano Martínez, set a World Cup final record with 11 saves. Meanwhile, Spain’s defense didn’t allow Argentina to get any shots on goal. And Lionel Messi (sometimes called the GOAT) lost his last World Cup match ever (probably).

The World Cup’s first-ever halftime show featured Shakira, a hallelujahin’ Justin Bieber, Madonna, BTS, Ted Lasso, and the Muppets.

After 104 games of real-life foosball across North America, Spain wasn’t the only winner. France’s Kylian Mbappé walked away with the Golden Boot for the tournament’s most goals (10) and the record for most combined World Cup goals ever (22). And the co-hosting Stars and Stripes won the hearts of many international fans. Road-tripping travelers celebrated American convenience stores, national parks, and… ranch dressing.

CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
For many around the globe, the World Cup carries an almost life-and-death importance. Without downplaying that passion, Christians should hold on tight to the fact that the most important things aren’t decided on the pitch. They were secured long ago when Jesus died to give new life and secure a glorious future. 

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.”

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
Sports can teach us so much about life in God’s world.

Sports can teach us the line between stewarding our bodies well and destroying them out of pride. They teach us about camaraderie and hospitality as communities come together to enjoy a unifying moment. They teach us the beauty of discipline and working at something even when it's hard. They teach us how to handle victory and failure. And most of all, they teach us that a win will only bring temporary happiness. If we want true joy, we have to find it in something deeper and eternal: Jesus Christ.

How can I model putting my hope and trust in Christ when discussing this story?
By keeping the big things big and the small things small. 

Wins (or losses) in sports can feel monumental, especially when the stage is big. It’s okay for these eternally insignificant things to be compelling for a season, but don’t let them ruin your week, puff up your pride, or consume your conversations and thoughts. Fix your eyes on the God of the Universe and allow Him to win your affections (Colossians 3:1-3). Remember that Spain’s win won’t change your Monday morning, but Christ’s sacrifice has changed your entire life. That’s the kind of hope worth living for.

• Discuss: How are you tempted to react when you’re losing or when you’re winning a game? How can you give glory to Christ in moments as small as playing a game of Monopoly or flag football?
   

• Memorize: 1 Corinthians 9:25, “Now everyone who competes exercises self-control in everything. They do it to receive a perishable crown, but we an imperishable crown” (CSB).
   

• Pray that you and your family would cheer first and foremost for Christ and his victory: God our Creator, protect us from performing as if the masterful excellence on the pitch mirrors the requirements of Your team, which recruits not the practiced, the impressive, the GOATs. You’re assembling all the weak, unskilled, foolish, and powerless who admit to never having won a single game against our cosmic opponent. Holy Spirit, while we enjoy these games, train our eyes on Jesus, who wins a victory that’s final, who takes the top spot on the podium, and who won’t be unseated by any challengers in this season or the next, forever. Amen.

Lindsey Graham (1955–2026)

Senator Lindsey Graham died suddenly Saturday night at age 71.

The Republican from South Carolina had just returned to Washington from Ukraine, where he had been discussing the war with Russia. His staff team said he gave no sign of feeling unwell. A preliminary examination suggests he died of a tear in his body’s main artery by the heart.

Mr. Graham was first elected to the Senate in 2002 and was running for a fifth term. The retired Air Force colonel was at the head of the Senate team that decides how the country spends money. He was a close ally of President Trump, and he was influential in discussions about national defense and foreign policy. Mr. Trump called the South Carolinian “one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known.” 

SC Gov. McMaster (R) chose Graham’s sister to fill his seat until the end of his term (January 3, 2027). Darline Graham Nordone was sworn in Tuesday (read about her here). She said the brother who raised her through her teens “has always been there for me. And now, I will be there for him.” South Carolinians will hold a special election on August 11 to choose the Republican candidate for November’s ballot. 

In other news from the Upper Chamber, Senator Mitch McConnell from Kentucky broke his silence to give a health update. The 84-year-old Republican was hospitalized several weeks ago. Sunday, he said he was hospitalized due to a fall and can’t “return to the Senate floor to vote quite yet.”

CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
Sudden deaths remind us that human life is brief and fragile. Believers’ hope of resurrection doesn’t mean we don’t grieve real sorrows, but reminds us that death will not have the final word. Pray for the late senator’s loved ones, for his colleagues, and for South Carolinians to experience the comfort and hope of Jesus.

What gospel lesson can be taught through this story?
Politicians often spend decades in public life, making decisions that earn both passionate supporters and fierce critics. But nobody's life fits neatly into “all good” or “all bad.” We're all a mix of courage and cowardice, wisdom and foolishness, kindness and selfishness.

This makes politicians human beings in need of God’s grace. None of us can earn our way into God's favor by our best days and we're not disqualified by our worst: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:23-24 CSB). Praise God!

What do I want my kids to know in light of this story?
The death of a public figure can be a time to audit one's heart: What does my reaction say about what I really value?

If my knee-jerk reaction is to despair over what this means for my party’s Senate seats instead of grieving a human life, or if I see a political opponent’s death as a political win… my focus has shifted from Jesus to my political team. Following Jesus means that agreeing on policy or politics is not a prerequisite for love: “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44 CSB).

• Write a letter to a public servant together. Consider making a lil’ gratitude sandwich: start with gratitude, tell them one thing you appreciate about their service, one thing you’d hope they focus on or get done, and end with one more thank you.
   

• Memorize: Romans 3:23-24, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (CSB).
   

• Pray for hopeful living in light of death with Psalm 90:12 as your guide: Gracious Giver of Life, teach me to number my days and keep their end ever before me, that I might learn to fear You and gain wisdom for whatever lifespan You give. Grow a hope for future glory in me, that it might overflow in my grieving world. Amen.

It’s a Love Story 

And on Friday, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce said yes “I do.”

The superstar singer and 3-time Super Bowl champ got engaged last August. Since then, their wedding has been the talk of the town… and also a big question mark. Fans turned into amateur detectives, trying to figure out when, where, and how they’d tie the knot. And the couple worked hard to keep it secret (even sending fake invites to throw people off… allegedly).

Clues started popping up last week. Crews, some wearing TS merch, started unloading tarp-covered deliveries at Madison Square Garden. A permit was also filed to close the nearby streets from July 2 to July 4. Not to mention, anonymous sources spilled (some of) the beans.

Many fans still thought it might be a decoy… until the Garden’s billboards lit up with the official announcement: JUST&T MARRIED!

Tay and Trav’s fairytale wedding happened on July 3 with an A-List guest list of 1,000+ people. The varied roster featured actors, athletes, and artists, all of whom signed NDAs with their RSVPs, and were told to check their phones at the door. But, since the nuptials, guests have slowly started breaking the cone of silence on social media.

Taylor’s longtime publicist put out a statement sharing what the couple wore and revealing that Adam Sandler was their officiant. Instead of bridesmaids and groomsmen, Tayvis’s brothers stood in as Man of Honor and best man.

Still, fans are on the edges of their seats waiting for Taylor’s Version of the wedding recap.

Celebrity weddings can seem really exciting (especially when they’re shrouded in mystery), but they should not consume our attention. As Christ-followers, we can show the world how to enjoy stories like this without letting them rule our hearts.

“‘Everything is permissible,’ but not everything is beneficial. ‘Everything is permissible,’ but not everything builds up… So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.”

What gospel lesson can be taught through this story?

The story of the Bible begins with a wedding in the Garden, and ends with a wedding in heaven (Revelation 19:7-9). The Church is often called the “bride of Christ,” and godly marriage is meant to be a picture of the Gospel lived out (Ephesians 5:25). This imagery isn’t an accident; marriage matters to God.

But human marriages and weddings will fail to live up to this picture. The world places importance on superficial things, like what the bride wore, and spouses fail to love each other because we are self-centered; but the good news of the Gospel is that Christ is the perfectly self-sacrificial and loving husband. As Romans 5:8 reminds us, “God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Now, that is worth remembering and celebrating.

Ask your kids what they have already heard about this story.

Rumors spread like wildfire, especially on social media and especially when it comes to our favorite celebrities. It’s okay to have fun thinking about decor, dresses, and guest lists, but we have to be careful not to let our minds become obsessed with the details of someone else’s life and drift into comparison.

Let your kids tell you about what they’ve heard. What details are grabbing their attention? What are some areas you can indulge in some good-natured fun with them (Ecclesiastes 9:7-10)? Where can you help them fix their minds more on things above (Colossians 3:2)?

• Discuss: What celebrations your family has coming up. (A birthday party, a graduation, a pool party?) What are some ways you can honor and point others to Christ through your celebrations?

• Memorize Colossians 3:2, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (CSB).

• Pray for the people around you who don’t know Christ, that they would come to understand his deep love for them and be saved.

Quarter-Millennium Shindig

Start practicing your best bald eagle call… America’s 250th birthday party is this weekend. 

On July 4th, 1776, the Thirteen Colonies started the process to sign, seal, and deliver the Declaration of Independence to England’s King George III. The colonies were renamed The United States of America, and a new nation was born. 

Uncle Sam’s done a lot in his 250 years, including: 

• Electing 47 presidents

• Passing over 30,000 laws 

• Living in nine capital cities 

• Fighting in 11 major conflicts 

• Hosting eight Olympic Games 

• Seeing dozens of rights’ movements

• And bringing over 470M baby Americans into the world

Though Independence Day celebrations didn’t become common until after the War of 1812, cookouts, parades, and matching American-flag shirts are now July 4th staples. (Read last year’s Decaf for a longer history behind the firework-filled festivities.) 

This year, Lady Liberty’s really putting on her Sunday weekend best. Tomorrow at 11:59 p.m. ET, Times Square is dropping its New Year’s ball midyear for the first time ever to get the semiquincentennial party started. Fireworks will light up the sky from the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to Mount Rushmore to the San Diego Bay. 

Many of the major events are being hosted by America250, a bipartisan group trying to get every American in on the celebration. One of their events is America’s Block Party: local 4th of July celebrations held across the country. (See if there’s one in your neck of the woods.)

ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE
As Christians, this weekend is an opportunity to both celebrate our temporary home and look toward our eternal one. In the end, all the countries and kingdoms of the world—including the United States—will end. But that’s good news! God’s kingdom is far better and never-ending. 

“For we do not have an enduring city here; instead, we seek the one to come. Therefore, through him let us continually offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name.”

What gospel lesson can be taught through this story?
U.S. citizens enjoy a number of freedoms. But for all our American freedoms, none compare with the freedom Christians find in Christ. In Him, we’re set free from the power of sin and death and empowered for wholehearted, God-oriented worship and obedience (Romans 6:5-11). 

What’s more, where American patriots had to fight to secure the freedoms we inherit today, there’s no declaration we can write or war we can wage to earn freedom from sin and death. It’s only by faith that Christ already won the war for us that we receive this forever freedom.

How can I model putting my hope and trust in Christ in light of this story?
By showing love and hospitality to my neighbors. 

Because of the freedom we have in Christ and our citizenship in His kingdom, holidays like Independence Day can be more than a day full of food and fireworks. They’re opportunities to follow Jesus’s greatest commandment: love God and others. 

One of the best ways to love your neighbors is by inviting them in, as Jesus has done for us. This week, invite someone—a neighbor who lives alone, a new face at church, or a friend from school—to join your family’s celebrations. You never know how a simple RSVP could impact someone’s eternity.

• Discuss: What does it mean to be a “good citizen”? How does our heavenly citizenship affect our earthly citizenship?
   

• Memorize Galatians 5:13, “For you were called to be free, brothers and sisters; only don’t use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another through love” (CSB).
   

• Pray for opportunities and boldness to share the love of Jesus with your neighbors this July 4th.

The Deal before the Deal

The U.S. and the Islamic Republic of Iran sat down in Switzerland this week to hammer out the details of peace.

Last week, President Trump and Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a memorandum of understanding. It’s like a handshake before a peace deal: everyone agrees to stop fighting for a bit, giving negotiators some breathing room to agree on the details of a peace deal.

Here’s what both sides have shaken on so far (read all 14 points here): 

• An “immediate and permanent” end to military operations. That includes in Lebanon, where Israel has been fighting Hezbollah (a terror group paid for by Iran).

• The Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for oil along Iran’s southern coast, reopens. The U.S. won’t block ports, and Iran won’t charge tolls.

• The U.S. commits to relieving some financial pressure on Iran.

• Iran commits to not having nuclear weapons.

Now, the nations will put their heads together in the famously neutral nation to reach a permanent deal. 

Talks got off to a bumpy start. Israel and Hezbollah kept fighting, Iran said the Strait was closed, the U.S. claimed it was open, and everyone delayed their trips to Switzerland. But by the end of Monday, mediators said both sides had agreed to a “road map” to reach the final deal within 60 days.

As we mourn the devastation of war and pray for peace around the world, believers are reminded of how good the news is of Jesus’s coming kingdom. His Spirit offers supernatural peace in our hearts today, and His return promises peace in a new world… forever. 

“‘For I will create new heavens and a new earth… The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like cattle, but the serpent’s food will be dust! They will not do what is evil or destroy on my entire holy mountain,’ says the Lord.”

What gospel lesson can be taught through this story?
Human-made peace is fragile. 

It seems to slip away as soon as it's negotiated, and it is so much harder to gain than to lose. If we pull on that thread long enough, we'll recognize a longing for a peace that lasts. That peace brings not just the end of fighting, but a biblical shalom where we can look at the world and say “all is well”... and fighting will never have to start again. 

Befriend that longing. It's an echo of the Kingdom to come: “The dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end.” (Isaiah 9:7 CSB).

How can I model loving an enemy when discussing this story?
War is one of the clearest human expressions of “us” vs. “them,” where “us” = “good” and “them” = “evil.”

And yet Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wrote, “The line between good and evil passes not through states... but right through every human heart.” The same warring impulses playing out between nations are at war inside our hearts. We are bent toward selfishness and greed, even at the expense of others. We do well to fall on our knees and thank God for brokering peace for us through Jesus and paving the way toward “a new heart” fit for a Kingdom of peace (Ezekiel 36:26).

• Share a time in your own life where fighting, arguing, or conflict ceased. What was required of each side? Did the peace last?
   

• Memorize: Isaiah 9:6-7, “For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. The dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from now on and forever.”
   

• Pray for peace talks: Gracious Peacemaker, in the hearts and lands of America, Iran, Israel, and Lebanon, work peace. Thwart evil plans and bring to fruition those that lead to flourishing. May leaders be creative in their problem-solving, wise in their choice of counselors, clear-eyed in their negotiating, and compassionate toward the needy, humbly considering others’ good before their own gain and attributing all the glory to you alone.

Shooting for the Stars

SpaceX has officially launched onto Wall Street. 

Last Friday, Elon Musk's rocket ship company SpaceX made its debut on the stock market. The stock market is like a giant online marketplace, except instead of buying groceries or clothes, everyday buyers are purchasing tiny pieces of companies (called shares). 

When a company does this for the first time, it's called "going public" or an “initial public offering” (IPO). Think of it like a pizza. Before, SpaceX was a pizza owned by a few people. Now, anybody can buy a slice… and millions of people did (555.6 million shares sold, to be exact). 

Companies usually decide to go public for the money. It’s a lot easier to sell a piece of your company to a million buyers for a small price than to ask one investor to write a check for hundreds of thousands. That money can be used to pay bills or fund future projects.

SpaceX’s fundraiser was out of this world. It sold shares for $135 each and raised $75 billion. That’s more money than most countries spend in a year… 

By the end of its first day on the stock market, one share of SpaceX soared to be worth $161. The company’s total value skyrocketed to more than $2.1 trillion, making it the sixth-largest company in America and the biggest IPO in recorded history. 

And speaking of making history, Elon Musk is officially the galaxy’s first trillionaire. 

SpaceX said it plans to use the money to create the rocket for NASA’s 2028 moon landing. It also plans to build AI datacenters in space and a city on Mars.

What gospel lesson can be taught through this story?
Money is a powerful thing. There’s very little Elon Musk can't make happen because of his enormous wealth. And yet, no one can buy their way out of the curse, or death, or the uncertainty of every day as a human being: “time and chance happen to them all” (Ecclesiastes 9:11). 

The good news of the gospel is that the ultimate assurance, security, and power come from joining Jesus's covenant family. At the cross of Jesus, we are all invited to come with what we do not have and buy what we do not deserve.

What response to this story do I want to model for my children?
As parents, our posture toward money speaks volumes about our faith. If we see our wealth and possessions primarily as what we have earned and own, we are bound to compare ourselves to those with more and enter a cycle of ingratitude and discontentment. 

But if we see all that we have as given by God (Matthew 6:25-30) and owned by Him (Psalm 24:1), we are free to live in both gratitude and generosity. Showing your children the hard-won work of countercultural contentment (Philippians 4:11-12) and intentional generosity will chart a path away from money’s tangles and toward the Kingdom’s upside-down joys.

• Discuss: Imagine you just inherited a trillion dollars. What would you do with it? Now imagine you had to spend 99% of it on something other than yourself or you’d lose it all (don’t worry, you still get $10B). What would you be excited to do?
   

• Memorize: Matthew 6:24, “No one can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money” (CSB). Extra credit: Listen to this song inspired by the verse.
   

• Pray for gratitude and contentment with Matthew 6:28-30 as your guide: O feeder of the birds, grow in me a reliance on Your gifts. Take away my worry, and replace it with gratitude. O dresser of the wildflowers, clothe me with Your joy and peace. Take away my tendency toward entitlement, and replace it with a desire for generosity. Amen.

The 2026 World Cup kicks off today. 

For the next month (plus extra time), Canada, Mexico, and the United States are hosting the every-four-years fútbol tourney. Teams from 48 countries will go head-to-head in 104 games to see who will hoist the golden trophy. The first whistle blows today in a Mexico v. South Africa matchup in Mexico City, while Team USA plays Paraguay tomorrow in Los Angeles. 

This year, France is the big favorite to take the cup, and superstar forward Kylian Mbappé is expected to win the Golden Boot (for the tourney’s top goalscorer). Spain, Argentina, Brazil, and England are also contenders. 

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has been hosting the World Cup since 1930. This year’s tournament features several firsts, including:  

• The first time three countries have co-hosted (see the map of matches);

• The first time 48 teams made the cut (previously, only 32 spots were available);

• And the first time the final match will have a Super Bowl-like halftime show. 

A hat-trick of musical guests—Madonna, Shakira, and recently reunited BTS—all scored headlining spots for the World Cup Final Halftime Show. They’ll perform July 19 at MetLife Stadium.

Sports can teach us a lot about everyday life—the value of teamwork, perseverance, and even loyalty. Athletes’ commitment and hard work encourage us to press on as we seek to win an “imperishable crown,” while a team’s victory can give us a foretaste of the greatest celebration in history.

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
Sports are temporary. Allegiance to Christ is forever… and far better. 

Sports build discipline and character, are a lot of fun, are (usually) good for our bodies, and can help open doors to opportunities like college scholarships or travel. But they can also become an idol or source of identity all too easily. 

Remember that all things—even sports—are worthless compared to knowing Christ (Philippians 3:7-9). Athletes and parents alike should seek to glorify God as they practice, compete, cheer from the stands… and even chug Gatorade.

How can I model loving an enemy when discussing this story?
By practicing good sportsmanship. 

Competition can bring out the best and worst in us. It’s also an incredibly tangible way for us to demonstrate love for our enemies competitors. When Christian athletes choose to rise above jeers from rowdy crowds, continue trying their hardest when the scoreboard isn’t in their favor, and win with grace and dignity, they show our loving Savior to the watching world. When Christian sports fans choose not to say something unkind about the opposing team, celebrate victories mercifully, and mourn defeats humbly, they do the same.

• Discuss: Has there been a time when you were tempted to be a sore loser (or winner)? How did you respond? Is there anything you wish you had done differently?
   

• Memorize Philippians 3:7, “But everything that was a gain to me, I have considered to be a loss because of Christ” (CSB).
   

• Pray that you and your family would hold Christ more highly than anything else in your lives: God our Creator, it’s here! The moment we’ve been waiting for. They’re just games… but You’re not booing from the sidelines. You delight in discipline. teamwork. perseverance. the comeback. You made us to do hard, beautiful things. Help me enjoy sports without giving them my heart. You are the only victor worthy of my affection; Your team has earned my wholehearted loyalty; and Your mission deserves my undivided focus. Use these games to train me so I’m fit for Your eternal kingdom. As I marvel at athletes’ commitment to their craft, teach me what it looks like to press on; to practice even when it’s boring; to endure even when it’s painstaking; to win the imperishable crown. Election Warm-Up

Tuesday, six states held primary elections: California, Iowa, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, and South Dakota. 

The primaries are an election before an election. This November, every state will hold midterms (elections that happen in the middle of a president’s four-year term). We'll choose members of Congress, and in some states, governors, and more. 

In the primaries, voters choose which candidate will represent their party on November 3rd. For example, voters in Iowa chose between two Democrats running for U.S. Senate: Josh Turek and Zach Wahls. Nearly 63% of voters picked Turek. Republican voters chose between Representative Ashley Hinson and Jim Carlin, and 74% voted for Hinson. So, Turek and Hinson will be the two on November’s ballot for Iowa’s new Senator.  

If the midterms are the Super Bowl, the primaries are the playoff games that decide who gets to play. Some of them are very high stakes.

California, for example, is electing a new governor—a job that usually turns someone into a national figure. Their current governor, Gavin Newsom, can’t run again. California also has a voting twist: only the two candidates with the most votes will advance to the midterms… and it doesn’t matter which party they’re from. In theory, two Democrats could move on and leave Republicans with no one representing their party. Check the Golden State’s results here.

But California and Iowa are just two pieces of a big puzzle. Dozens of races were held Tuesday. Some of them in battleground states—places where either party has a real shot at winning. The results could help determine whether Democrats or Republicans control Congress. And with votes still being counted, there’s still time for surprises.

RADIATE HOPE
Elections can make people fearful, anxious, and angry. Christians have an opportunity to tell others about the hope of Christ the King. Even the biggest world news doesn’t shake him. Shine Christ's light to everyone you meet this week.

“You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”

How can I model putting my hope and trust in Christ when discussing this story?
Because our hope is secure no matter the election results, Christians are free to model a different kind of citizenship: one motivated by love of neighbor and faith in our victorious King. 

We live as exiles—citizens of a different kingdom, devoted to another King. But our King doesn’t want us to just sit around and wait for Him to rescue us; He calls us to seek the good of our communities: "Pursue the well-being of the city I have deported you to. Pray to the LORD on its behalf, for when it thrives, you will thrive" (Jeremiah 29:7 CSB).

How can I explain balancing love and truth?
Faithful political engagement is a bit like walking a tightrope. On one side, there's a danger of holding convictions so firmly it becomes impossible to love those who differ. On the other, there's a danger of avoiding offense so thoroughly that all boldness for the truth evaporates.

We fall off the tightrope when we think faithfulness = only thinking rightly or that love = never offending with our convictions. Fear not: Jesus is our guide (Ephesians 4:15). He didn't die for “the correct,” and His love wasn't primarily about keeping the peace but creating peace. It’s a difficult tightrope, but He walks with us.

• Write a letter to a local elected official: (1) thank them for their public service and tell them you’re praying for them, and (2) tell them what you’d like to see them do for the good of your community.  
   

• Memorize Jeremiah 29:7, “Pursue the well-being of the city I have deported you to. Pray to the LORD on its behalf, for when it thrives, you will thrive” (CSB).
   

• Pray for elected leaders by name with a prayer from the Book of Common Prayer:
  “Almighty God, our heavenly Father, send down on those who hold public office especially [say his/her name] the spirit of wisdom, charity, and justice; that with steadfast purpose they may faithfully serve in their offices to promote the well-being of all people; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” (page 655)

Tower of B-AI-bel

The Pope has (lots) to say about AI.

On Monday, Pope Leo XIV (that’s “14th” for the non-Roman among us) released a 42,300-word encyclical (think: a big essay about the Catholic Church’s views on an important topic). He called it “Magnifica Humanitas,” or “Magnificent Humanity.” It focused on humanity’s unique “capacity for relationship and love” in the AI era. 

Leo compared AI to the Tower of Babel from Genesis 11. Back then, humans tried to prove their power by building a tower to reach heaven and make themselves like God. The Pope asked AI companies to avoid making another Babelly Tower. Instead, they should build up the “common good.”

Monday’s release date was purposeful because 135 years earlier, the previous Pope Leo (Leo XIII) wrote an encyclical on workers’ dignity during the Industrial Revolution. Machines were replacing people in factories, working conditions worsened, and family life changed. The latest Leo thinks history is repeating and sees a need to:  

• Protect human dignity as machines take over jobs;

• Retrain workers displaced by AI;

• Ensure humans—not machines—keep control of weapons systems;

• Protect children from digital addiction, bullying, and harmful AI content.

What do AI companies think? Christopher Olah, co-founder of Anthropic (one of the world’s biggest AI companies), spoke before the pope’s speech at the Vatican (watch it here). He praised the pope’s ideas and said AI companies need “moral voices” to help value people over profits.

CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
As the world debates AI, it’s a good moment for personal reflection on technology’s effect on our lives, relationships, and habits. Whatever tools we use, we should use them wisely and in ways that increase the fruit of the Spirit in us.  

“Walk by the Spirit and you will certainly not carry out the desire of the flesh… The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

Ask your kids what they think about AI and the pope’s papers.
Begin the conversation with some questions.

• Have your kids used AI? What for?

• What do they like about it? What do they dislike?

• What makes them nervous about it? Excited?

• What do they think parents or teachers misunderstand about kids and AI?

What do I want to make sure my kids (and I) know in light of this story?
AI makes (usually) correct, compelling information available in the blink of an eye. Those outputs have great uses… but when we make a habit of going to bots, there are side effects. A big one is that we start to value outcomes more than the often challenging process of getting there. It’s in that process that we grow, learn, and build character (James 1:2–5; Romans 5:3–4).  

AI reduces life to a sum of outputs. Are we guilty of doing the same thing as parents? 

It’s easy to focus on the outcomes of our kids’ lives: quick obedience, good grades, sports successes, etc. But we are called to make disciples of our kids, which means that their character and growth are more important than the outcomes they’re producing.

• Audit your family’s (or classroom’s) use of AI. What are your habits? Is the technology serving you, or are you serving it? Does anything need to change? Sharing your own experience with technology’s pros and cons could open the door for great dialogue.  
   

• Memorize James 1:2–4, “Consider it a great joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you experience various trials, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing” (CSB).
   

• Pray for good AI habits in your home and in our world: God of Wisdom, as our world rumbles with new power and opportunities from artificial intelligence, we ask You for wisdom. Give it to executives and elected officials to discern how technology can advance flourishing. Give it to individuals, families, and churches to use—and not be used by—these new tools. And may we always trust You as our ultimate source of wisdom. Amen.

Ebola Outbreak

A rare type of Ebola virus is spreading quickly across central Africa.

Ebola is a contagious disease that causes flu-like symptoms, internal bleeding, and organ damage. It leads to death in about half of cases. This specific strain is called the Bundibugyo virus. 

The disease started in a region in Congo called Ituri, which is next to Uganda (see the outbreak map here). It spread for several weeks before health workers realized what it was. It has already killed over 130 people in Congo and Uganda, and over 500 people are suspected of having it. There is no approved vaccine or medicine. 

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared this outbreak a global emergency. That’s not the same as a pandemic like COVID-19. It means the disease is spreading across borders, and the WHO needs other countries’ help to stop it, but it’s not everywhere like COVID-19 was.

Authorities expect this outbreak to last months. Meanwhile, Congo is experiencing a civil war, making it hard for health workers to get into certain places, and rebel groups have also destroyed a lot of clinics. The WHO sent resources like medical equipment, cleaning supplies, and masks, but doctors say that isn’t enough. They are asking other countries for more help.

CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
As Ebola spreads, it can be easy to feel anxious. Remember the LORD’s promise to be with His people through troubling and uncertain times all the way into eternity. Nothing is out of His reach or surprises Him.  

“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand.”

What gospel habit can be seen in this story?
One of the people who has Ebola is an American missionary doctor who caught the disease while working at a hospital in Ituri. He stands within a long tradition of believers who have moved toward the sick at great personal cost. 

Just a couple generations after Jesus’s resurrection, Bishop Dionysius of Alexandria wrote this during a massive plague: “Most of our brother Christians showed unbounded love and loyalty, never sparing themselves and thinking only of one another. Heedless of danger, they took charge of the sick, attending to their every need and ministering to them in Christ, and with them departed this life supremely happy…”

We may never find ourselves in the middle of an outbreak, but these brave believers can spur us on to make small (and big) choices that serve others instead of ourselves.

What response to this story do I want to model for my children?
Sometimes prayer can feel like trying to topple a stone wall by lobbing a cotton ball at it.

But God says His people’s prayers are more like an excavator with a hydraulic breaker—“powerful and effective” (James 5:16). God has chosen to tie His action in the world to the prayers of His people… So come boldly before God in prayer, knowing that He hears you (Hebrews 4:16).

• Discuss: In what areas of life are you tempted to act for your own interest? What’s a small choice you can make to serve someone else?  
   

• Memorize Hebrews 4:16: “Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need” (CSB).
   

• Pray with us for central Africa: God Our Refuge, bring under the shadow of Your wings those who have lost loved ones to this disease. Give them the enduring comfort of Jesus’s good news in the face of terribly bad news of corruption and death. Be a refuge, a fortress, a friend for the sick who have been quarantined and separated from their support systems. Heal their bodies, including the missionary doctor. Give doctors and public health officials skills for healing, communication, and containment. Bring peace where chaos and destruction are keeping resources from the needy. Bless the work of scientists and biomedical engineers racing to find new methods of protection and healing. And shower the public with steadying grace—healing, protecting, and renewing the world through Your Word, by the power of Your Spirit. Amen.
