Strait Talk

Air strikes have quieted in Iran, but tensions between the U.S. and the Islamic Republic are still high.

Last week, the U.S., Israel, and Iran agreed to a two-week pause on the fighting that began 47 days ago. Pakistan helped negotiate a 10-point framework for the ceasefire (read all 10 points here).

Peace talks began over the weekend but didn’t go anywhere. Vice President JD Vance said Iran refused to give up its plans to develop nuclear weapons. (The U.S and other countries have tried to stop Iran from having nuclear weapons for a long time.) 

Now, conflict has focused on the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway through which ~20% of the world’s oil travels. On Monday, the U.S. Navy began blocking ships from entering or leaving Iranian ports in and around the strait (see map). Iran wasn’t happy about it, claiming Uncle Sam was acting like a pirate. The oil-rich country threatened the safety of other ports in the Persian Gulf. 

The uncertainty of the war, ceasefire, and blockade has sent oil prices yo-yoing. Prices jumped (again) Monday, which could mean higher gas prices around the world.

Pakistan is encouraging both sides to come back to the negotiating table before the ceasefire expires next week.

Join us in prayer for the Middle East, confident that God hears and grants our prayers when we pray “according to his will” (1 John 5:14–15).

Wonderful Counselor, You are the One who winds down wars and teaches peace (Isaiah 54:13). May Your peace rule in the hearts of Iranians, Israelis, and their Middle Eastern neighbors; in diplomats and U.S. officials; and in all members of Christ’s body (Colossians 3:15-17). Bring evil plans to nothing and promote the good of the vulnerable, so that people from all nations would see Your goodness and submit to the Prince of Peace.

How can I model putting my hope and trust in Christ when discussing this story?
Economic uncertainty is an opportunity for believers to show how faith in Christ changes us. 

Because of Iran’s oil resources, headlines are emphasizing the very real, often scary economic upheaval caused by the conflict. But believers can respond to rising prices and uncertainty differently than those who don’t share in the hope of Christ.

Our hope is built on God’s promises, not our financial futures (Habakkuk 3:17-19; 1 Timothy 6:17). That means we can be content (and even joyful) in times of lack, giving to others sacrificially and trusting the Lord to meet our needs (2 Corinthians 8:1-5; Philippians 4:10-14). Our peace is a fruit of the Spirit that shows Christ in us to an anxious world.

What response to this story do I want to model for my children?
Prayerfulness and peacemaking.

War brings destruction to everything it touches—lands, people, governments, and economies—but our God is the Great Restorer. As we wait for Him to make everything new, there are (at least) two things we can do:

1. Pray that the Middle East would experience a taste of His restoration today and glorify the Messiah Jesus. This week especially, pray for leaders involved in peace talks (1 Timothy 2:1-2; James 5:16).  

2. Make peace in your little corner of the world. When we choose to de-escalate, refuse to claim the final word, extend mercy… we show the world what our God is like and push forward His kingdom (Exodus 34:6-7; Matthew 5:9).

• Make a list of three ways God has provided for you and your family in past seasons of financial turbulence, and keep the list somewhere visible this week to remind you of God’s faithfulness.
   

• Memorize 1 Timothy 6:17-19: “Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be arrogant or to set their hope on the uncertainty of wealth, but on God, who richly provides us with all things to enjoy. Instruct them to do what is good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and willing to share, storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the coming age” (CSB).
   

• Pray for the Middle East to experience Christ’s peace: Mighty God, You are never caught by surprise or overpowered. By Your overwhelming strength, work peace across the Middle East. Overcome evildoers; comfort those who are mourning; protect the vulnerable; strengthen those who will rebuild; and bring order from chaos so that Iran and its neighbors will taste and see the goodness of the One True King.

March April Madness

Michigan and UCLA are the new kings and queens of college basketball.

The Wolverines beat UConn 69-63 in the men's championship game on Monday. The win caps a remarkable turnaround under second-year head coach Dusty May. The boys from Ann Arbor stood (very) tall all year. Their “shortest” player, Elliot Cadeau (6'1"), was named Most Outstanding Player. He dropped 19 points to give Michigan their confetti shower. On the women's side, the UCLA Bruins put a bruisin' on South Carolina 79-51 Sunday, with five players scoring double figures. It's the school's first-ever women's trophy and coach Cori Close's first time cutting the net (see why they do that here). She's led the Lady Bruins for her entire fifteen-season head coaching career. 

Off the court, President Trump signed an executive order on Friday that whistles for new college sports rules. The order limits how many times athletes can transfer schools (one) and how long they're eligible (five years). It also limits outside groups from paying athletes to play at a particular school. The move aims to protect women’s and smaller sports from losing funding to big-money programs like football and basketball.

What gospel lesson can be taught through this story?
Believers measure winning differently than the rest of the world.

Most college athletes experience disappointment and failure more often than victory. For every player who makes the Final Four, there are thousands who don’t even make the tournament. But that doesn’t mean their work was worthless, because (hopefully) their discipline and friendships have shaped them for the better. 

In the same way, Christians can expect to face failure and hardship on this side of eternity. But what will matter when Jesus returns is not how many wins and losses you rack up on your score sheet, but who you seek—and who you become—in the process (John 17:3; James 1:2-4).

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
Give all kinds of work your best effort, for God’s glory.

March Madness is an opportunity for college athletes to showcase a lifetime of hard work and talent. And it’s easy to marvel at a 6’10” superstar… but God has made you for beautiful, hard things too. You are his workmanship, created to bring Him glory whether you’re doing schoolwork, cleaning your room, practicing piano, changing diapers, or plugging data into a spreadsheet: “We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10 CSB).

• Discuss: What’s something you’re working on that feels hard or discouraging right now? How have you seen Christlike character growing in you through the process?

Moonbound

Last night, four astronauts lifted off for a journey around the moon (see their flight path).

NASA’s Artemis II mission launched last night at 6:24 p.m. ET from Kennedy Space Center in Florida (watch them blast off). The ascent marks the first crew headed for the moon since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972.

The mission aims to put the never-before-launched crew ship, named Integrity, through its paces. The far-side four hope to make it 252,000 total miles in about 10 days, rocketing about 4,700 miles past the far side of the moon. Crew members could see parts of the lunar surface that no human has ever laid eyes on. 

The flight is a major milestone in NASA’s space race with China. Artemis II is one small step for Uncle Sam putting boots on the Big Cheese by 2028 (outpacing China’s 2030 goal).

Commander Reid Wiseman is leading the crew alongside pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian mission specialist Jeremy Hansen (meet the explorers). Riding along is a mascot named Rise, a stuffie designed by a California second-grader and chosen from 2,600 entries across 50 countries (see its out-of-this-world hat here). Rise is the mission’s official “zero-gravity indicator.”

CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
Even our most ingenious exploratory missions will never carry us beyond God’s boundless creativity. Our most daring leaps into the unknown are just a peek into places God has always been, since the day He spoke them into being.

What gospel lesson can be taught through this story?
Journeys around the moon and images like these from powerful telescopes highlight that the universe is unfathomably big and beautiful… and yet God is still bigger than it all. 

The vastness of the universe can’t compare with the megavastness of our God, who spoke the stars and moon into existence and knows all the details we have yet to discover. 

But despite our Creator’s overwhelming transcendence, He still cares about the details of your life. He cares about your dreams and fears, He knows your favorite cereal, and He sees when you open the pickle jar for grandma. The God who is far beyond the far side of the moon is also the God who emptied Himself and took on the form of a weak, fragile human and died for you.

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
The awe and even fear with which we approach things like space can teach us about “the fear of the LORD.”

The Bible says that the glimpses of God’s raw power we see in creation are meant to teach us to fear Him: “The heavens were made by the word of the Lord, and all the stars, by the breath of his mouth… Let the whole earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him” (Psalm 33:6-8 CSB). 

This isn’t the kind of fear that drives us away from God (one of Scripture’s most frequent commands is “do not be afraid”), it’s the kind of awe that draws us near and drives out every other fear.

• Explore somewhere you’ve never been—a new trail, rooftop view, or a field at night—and share something it shows you about the God who spoke everything into existence.
   

• Memorize Nehemiah 9:6, “You, LORD, are the only God. You created the heavens, the highest heavens with all their stars, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to all of them, and all the stars of heaven worship you” (CSB). 

• Pray that the astronauts would have a safe trip and that their discoveries would draw people to the Lord in worship.

Runway Crash

Two pilots were killed and 41 people injured late Sunday in a crash on LaGuardia Airport’s runway.

Just before midnight, an Air Canada Express jet was landing from Montreal, carrying 72 passengers and four crew. The plane crashed into a fire truck crossing the runway. Air traffic control had cleared the truck to cross the plane’s path in order to respond to a report of an odor on a nearby plane. Recordings reveal the air traffic controller realizing the mistake and shouting for the truck to stop seconds before the crash.

A flight attendant was ejected over 300 feet from the plane. She was still strapped to her jump seat (which is specifically designed to withstand crashes) and suffered only a fractured leg. Everyone on the truck survived.

After the crash, LaGuardia closed for 14 hours, cancelling over 600 flights. Officials recovered both black boxes—the devices that record flight data and cockpit audio—and launched a full investigation.

What gospel lesson can be taught through this story?
Tragic accidents are proof that the world is broken.

Ever since sin entered the world, all of creation has been put under a curse (Romans 8:20-22). Things that should not happen—like disease, decay, and deadly airline accidents—are now part of everyday life. This is the result of our sin.

The great news is that God came down to fix what we broke. He overcame our sin, and He has prepared a place for us where things like this accident never happen (John 14:2-3; 16:33).

How can I model putting my hope and trust in Christ when discussing this story?
Riding on an airplane puts us in a position of complete dependence. 

Our schedule is set for us, and our journey could be delayed or canceled suddenly; we’re confined to a seat we probably didn’t choose, sitting next to strangers; we can’t maintain the plane’s engine, set its course, or fly it. 

And helplessness is scary, especially when accidents happen. But the weird, upside-down thing about being a Christian is that God says a place of complete dependence on Him (aka trust) is exactly the right place to be. Like little children who implicitly trust good parents, faith ushers us into big peace and overflowing joy (Psalm 131; Matthew 18:1-4).

• Discuss: What areas of your life are you white-knuckling right now? In other words, where does dependence feel most threatening? What would it look like to loosen your grip?
   

• Memorize 2 Corinthians 5:7: “We walk by faith, not by sight” (CSB).
   

• Pray for those affected by the LaGuardia crash: 

  Lord of Highest Heaven, today we are brought down low and shaken. Hold us fast, Searching, Knowing, Present One. Hold fast the families mourning those suddenly lost. Hold fast the injured, brought low and broken, who face an enduring trial. Hold fast the anxious who fear the journey over the jet bridge and into a cloudy expanse of helpless dependence.

  We are finite and frail and vulnerable, reliant on Your understanding for our very life and breath. Teach us the wholehearted trust of a little child with a good parent, so that we walk by faith, overflowing with the peace of one who is fully known, seen, and cared for by the Lord of Highest Heaven. In Like a Lion

March’s weather understood the assignment (see what we mean), with roughly half of the U.S. under extreme conditions this week.

On the East Coast, thunderstorms struck from Florida to New Jersey. More than 94M people were under severe weather alerts, and around 34M were under tornado watches. Washington, D.C. was in the heart of the storm’s red zone, so federal workers got an early dismissal on Monday.

In the Midwest, a clipper (a fast-moving winter storm system that starts east of the Canadian Rocky Mountains) blew in on Friday. More than 70M people faced blustery winds, and hundreds of thousands were without power in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan. After the wind came the snow, making St. Paddy’s day parades more white than green. Over 11M Upper Midwesterners were buried in up to 3 feet of snow (see pics of the drifts). 

Meanwhile, a heatwave is blasting through the West. Western Nebraska is currently fighting the largest fire in the state’s history. Four wildfires have burned nearly 800,000 acres of land and killed one person. In Arizona and Nevada, Southwesterners are expecting record-breaking triple-digit temps into the weekend.

CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
When the weather seems like it’s glitching, that doesn’t mean God has lost control or isn’t good. Instead, it reminds us that all the world has been broken by sin. The wrongness is in us and our world, not in God. But when Jesus returns, He will make all things right. 

“For the creation was subjected to futility—​not willingly, but because of him who subjected it​—in the hope that the creation itself will also be set free from the bondage to decay into the glorious freedom of God’s children.”

What good news do my kids need to hear in light of today’s news?
Extreme, unpredictable weather highlights that we are rather small and finite. 

We could respond to that realization with fear and pride, striving to manipulate our circumstances for maximum security and control… but that frantic self-preservation will only leave us exhausted and disappointed. 

Instead, we can accept Jesus’s invitation to come to Him for rest: “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30 CSB).

Circumstances like weather, health, or employment can take a turn in an instant. But the one who is yoked to Jesus will have peace, come what may. 

What response to this story do I want to model for my children?
Lending a hand. 

With half the country disrupted by harsh conditions, chances are you have neighbors in need. Look for opportunities to serve, whether it’s clearing a fallen branch, sharing groceries or a meal with someone who lost power, or offering a cold drink to those working out in the heat. 

Acts of kindness (especially this close to Easter!) often open doors for inviting our neighbors into Christian community, where they can encounter Jesus. That’s the whole point of good works, after all—that others would see believers’ kindness and be awed by God’s goodness (Matthew 5:16; Titus 2:11-14; 1 Peter 2:12).

• Design (or review) your family’s emergency plan. Talk through details like how to use a fire extinguisher, where emergency supplies are kept, and where the family can meet if separated. As you discuss the plan, remember to share your faith that God will take care of your family even when hard things happen.
   

• Memorize Matthew 11:28-29, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (CSB)
   

• Pray with us: Father, King of Creation, call your rebellious elements back to order. Provide for those who are disrupted and endangered. Jesus, Stiller of Raging Storms, bring peace and freedom from fear. Grant the rest of faith to those who are exhausted by grasping for control. Spirit, Giver of Life, embolden Your people for courageous kindness among our needy neighbors. Shine Your light and make new again, Lord of Resurrection and Life. Amen.

War in the Middle East

The United States and Israel are almost two weeks into a war with the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the impact is spreading across the Middle East. 

Here’s what’s happening on the ground:

• Washington says its military objectives are “ahead of schedule” and that Iran’s Navy and Air Force are wiped out. President Trump said America hasn’t “won enough” yet.

• On Sunday, the Islamic Republic named a new Supreme Leader. Mojtaba Khamenei will take his father’s place leading the country. President Trump said he was “not happy” with the choice.

• Iran isn’t backing down. Yesterday, at least three commercial ships were struck in and around the Strait of Hormuz—the narrow sea route through which 20% of the world’s oil supply passes (see map). Iran claimed responsibility for one of the strikes.

The war’s death toll is climbing. A seventh American service member has died in the conflict, and the United Nations says nearly 1,300 people have been killed in Iran. Lebanon said at least 570 people have been killed there and nearly 700,000 people have been forced to flee from their homes. (Israel has been striking its northern neighbor to try to eliminate Hezbollah, a Lebanon-based terror group that Iran funds.)

Around the world, oil prices have been on a roller coaster. 

The price of crude oil (the raw, unrefined state oil is in when it comes out of the ground) spiked to almost $120/barrel Monday. That’s the most expensive it’s been since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Oil got so spendy because of Iran threatening traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. But prices went back down after Trump said the conflict could be over “very soon.”

CHRISTIAN RESPONSE
War brings destruction to everything it touches—lands, people, governments, and economies—but our God is the Great Restorer. As we look forward to God making everything new one day, pray that the Middle East would experience a taste of that restoration today and glorify the Messiah Jesus. 

“On this mountain… [the LORD of Armies will swallow] up death once and for all. The LORD GOD will wipe away the tears... On that day it will be said, ‘Look, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he has saved us. This is the LORD; we have waited for him. Let’s rejoice and be glad in his salvation.’”

Ask your kids how they feel about this story.
Does it make them sad? Afraid? Angry? 

Talk about what emotions the war stirs up, then probe what’s behind that feeling. Knowing where our kids are coming from will help us empathize and share the good news of Jesus. 

Fear of death? Jesus beat it. Anxiety about money? God promises to provide. Sadness about displacement? God will make everything new and provide an eternal home. The goal is not to give trite answers to life’s biggest problems, but to learn where our kids are, sit with them there, and then speak specific encouragement from Scripture.

What good news do my kids need to hear in light of this bad news?
War means many unbelievers are suffering and dying without the hope of Jesus (John 17:3). What can we do with this sadness?

Remember God’s character:

1. It’s OK to be sad. The things that sadden God should sadden us. Jesus Himself mourned the suffering and death that gripped the world because of the pain it caused (John 11:32-35).

2. God will always do right. We don’t have to worry about Him overlooking someone or missing the facts when He judges (Genesis 18:16-33, esp. v. 25).

3. The Lord is generous with mercy. He loves to offer forgiveness, and He eagerly extends His steadfast love (Exodus 34:5-8; Ezekiel 18:21-23; 1 Timothy 2:3-5).

God is completely in control—even in times of chaos—and we can trust His goodness.

• Learn something about Iran. This Middle Eastern country is so much more than a stage for conflict in the news. Check out this FAQ and share something lovely that you discover: a tasty food, a stunning vista, an intriguing cultural custom, a surprising historical fact…
   

• Memorize John 17:3, “This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent—Jesus Christ” (CSB).
   

• Pray for those who are lost and suffering without hope in the Middle East. Pray that the Lord would pierce the darkness—whether through supernatural, direct appearances to those who are His, or by the courageous witness of His people in the region.

Conflict in Iran and Beyond

The U.S. and Israel attacked Iran last weekend.

What happened?
The U.S. and Israel teamed up to launch a surprise attack on Iran just after 9:00 am local time Saturday. Missiles hit political and military sites across the country, including the palace of Iran’s Supreme Leader. Ayatollah Khamenei, the 86-year-old who ruled Iran for 35 years, was killed. The strikes also took out at least 49 other top leaders of Iran’s government and military.

Iran struck back, hitting targets all over the Middle East (see a strike map). 

The U.S. said six servicemembers have been killed in the conflict so far. Iran says it’s lost nearly 1,000 people.

Why did the attacks start?
Tensions with Iran have been high over Iran building nuclear weapons and violently crushing protests last month. 

The White House says the joint strikes have a few goals:

1. Majorly weaken Iran’s military

2. Prevent the country from developing nuclear weapons

3. Keep Iran from giving money to terror groups in the region

Critics are saying the Trump administration’s military goals are not crystal clear. The big question mark is whether “regime change” (overturning the government) is on Uncle Sam’s agenda.

What’s next?
President Trump said the fighting could last “four to five weeks” or longer. 

Meanwhile, Americans in 14 Middle Eastern countries have been urged to evacuate because of “serious safety risks.” Oil and natural gas prices are going up, and overall inflation is expected to rise, too.

When our news feed fills with violence and chaos, we’re often swept into a spiral of anxiety. But believers have an anchor in Jesus, whose peace pierces the darkness now and will one day shatter it completely.

What good news do my kids need to hear in light of this bad news?
It seems like just as one conflict in the Middle East reaches a tentative conclusion, another bursts violently onto the scene. 

When the prophet Isaiah was caught up in a similar cycle of Middle East violence nearly 3,000 years ago, God pulled back the curtain on a very good, verrrry long future: “He will settle disputes among the nations and provide arbitration for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plows and their spears into pruning knives. Nation will not take up the sword against nation, and they will never again train for war” (Isaiah 2:4 CSB).

War is not forever. A peaceful King is coming, and the seat of His kingdom will be smack dab in the middle of the Middle East. He’ll interrupt the raging of the world’s most turbulent region, commanding stillness with the same ease that quieted storms and undid sicknesses and death.

Why is God’s peace taking so long?
This conflict has been raging for thousands of years, and it may continue to drag on. That doesn’t mean God has forgotten His promise or doesn’t care about the region's people. 

The Bible says God’s timing for Jesus’s return is set by His mercy: “With the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord does not delay his promise, as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:8-9 CSB).

His “delay” furthers His mission of inviting others to come to Him for life. While you wait for His plan to unfold, trust His character and align your mission with His.

• Choose a country, learn the basic facts about its population (this site can help), then pray for that country specifically (try this prayer guide).
   

• Memorize John 1:5, “That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.” (CSB).
   

• Pray for the Middle East: Mighty God, You are never caught by surprise or overpowered. By Your overwhelming strength, work peace across the Middle East. Overcome evildoers; comfort those who are mourning; protect the vulnerable; strengthen those who will rebuild; and bring order from chaos so that Iran and its neighbors will taste and see the goodness of the One True King.

Cartel Chaos

Mexico is recovering from a wave of violence. It all started on Sunday when Mexican security forces killed one of the country’s most-wanted cartel bosses, “El Mencho.”

A drug cartel is a group of people who sell drugs illegally to make big money, often using violence to protect their business. Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes (“El Mencho”) headed up the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The CJNG is one of America’s biggest suppliers of the drugs fentanyl, meth, and cocaine, and the U.S. has labeled it a terror organization.

The U.S. and Mexico shared information for months to track down the drug lord, before there was a breakthrough this weekend. Mexican authorities followed one of El Mencho’s romantic partners to his hideout. Oseguera Cervantes was shot in a gunfight with security forces and died in custody on the way to the hospital.

The cartel struck back violently. CJNG blocked 250+ roads and burned cars across 20+ states in Mexico. Over 70 people were killed in the operation and the violence that followed. That number includes 25 Mexican National Guard members, the alleged mastermind of CJNG’s response, and more than 30 additional suspected cartel members. 

Thousands of security forces were deployed to quiet the unrest. Monday, authorities said all roadblocks had been cleared. Tuesday, normal flight schedules resumed across tourist destinations like Puerto Vallarta, Cancún, and Cozumel (see map).

ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE
Christians live as strangers and exiles in our home countries, whether that temporary home is peaceful, disorderly, or somewhere in between. Seek the good of the land you’re passing through while eagerly anticipating the coming of your permanent home. 

“This is what the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says to all the exiles I deported from Jerusalem to Babylon: ‘Build houses and live in them. Plant gardens and eat their produce… Pursue the well-being of the city I have deported you to. Pray to the LORD on its behalf, for when it thrives, you will thrive.’”

How can I model putting my hope and trust in Christ when discussing this story?
Do not fear! The news is notorious for amplifying scary and tragic stories because they’re what keep audiences coming back. But for believers in Jesus, fear is never the appropriate response.

Why not? First, there’s God’s explicit command/encouragement all over the Bible: “Fear not!” In all kinds of intimidating, intense, tragic situations, God’s presence strengthens believers to face hard things with faith (Deuteronomy 31:6; Isaiah 41:10; Revelation 1:17). 

Plus, there’s His promise of a good, reallllly long future in His presence. If I believe that my soul is safe with Jesus, no matter what happens to my body on earth (Matthew 10:28), why should anything in the news make me anxious? From the perspective of eternity, suffering is short and just a preparation for future joy.

What response to this story do I want to model for my children?
You were not made to bear the emotional weight of every hard headline that reaches you from across the world. You’re finite… and that’s not a design flaw.

In Matthew 25, Jesus calls His followers to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, care for the sick, and visit the imprisoned. But He isn’t assigning each individual Christian an impossible checklist. He’s describing the kind of love His people will be known for—a collective identity, not a solo mission.

So when you hear about hard things in distant lands, thank God for His body, the Church, and pray that He would equip local believers to serve boldly in their homelands for His glory.

• In moments of anxiety, choose a habit that speaks hope into fear. Suggestion: sing a song that’s chock full of Scripture, like this one.
   

• Memorize Isaiah 41:10, “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand” (CSB).
   

• Pray for deliverance from fear in your own life, and pray that believers in Mexico would be strengthened for the hard work of peacemaking in their communities.

Ash Wednesday

Lent—not to be confused with lint, the fuzz in your belly button—began yesterday on Ash Wednesday.

It’s a major season on the Christian calendar. Christmas gets a lot of hype these days (for a good reason). But throughout the history of the Christian church, Easter has been the most important celebration of the year. And just like Advent is a season of preparation for Christmas, Lent is a season of preparation for Easter.

“Lent” comes from the Old English word for spring, the season when days lengthen, and everything becomes new. It’s a 40-day period of repentance (turning away from sin) and remembering and practicing Jesus’s humility to get ready for Easter’s renewal. Christians have been practicing Lent since the early church.

Why 40 days? The number 40 reflects biblical moments of preparation and testing. Jesus fasted 40 days in the wilderness (Matthew 4), Israel wandered 40 years in the desert (Joshua 5:6), Moses spent 40 days on Mount Sinai (Exodus 34), and the flood’s rain lasted 40 days and nights (Genesis 7:12). 

But if you count the days from February 18th to April 5th (Easter this year), it’ll add up to 46… That’s because Sundays don’t count. Sunday is always a celebration of the resurrection, so God’s people take a break from repentance to remember Jesus’s victory.

Lent typically involves fasting from a food or habit (like TV or social media) to limit distractions or highlight idols. But it’s not just about giving things up. Lent also invites believers into practices like prayer, worship, generosity, and Scripture reading. 

Ash Wednesday (aka The “Day of Ashes”) kicks the season off. Historically, believers receive ashes on their foreheads as a symbol of grief and death. The ash is spread in the shape of a cross as a reminder that Jesus has ultimately defeated death.

CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
Whether Lent has a place on your calendar or not, practices of humility are nonnegotiables in the life of believers. How are you humbly drawing near?

“God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be miserable and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.”

What gospel lesson can be taught through this story?
Observing Lent is not commanded in the Bible, but repentance is. 

Colossians 2:16 warns against passing judgment on people based on what religious traditions they engage in. But practices like repentance, confession, prayer, and fasting—the cornerstones of Lent—are commanded in Scripture (James 4:7-10; 5:16; Romans 12:11-12; Matthew 6:16-18). Just like the New Year might give a person renewed focus on a goal like improving fitness, a special season of focus on spiritual disciplines can help us recalibrate for healthy rhythms of engaging in them all year long.

If you have been neglecting habits of prayer and humility or find yourself too distracted to enter God’s presence, Lent could be an opportunity to re-engage alongside other believers and seek the Lord.

What might my kids misunderstand about this story?
Lent is not just a Catholic tradition. 

While the majority of Lent observers in America today are Catholic, the season of humble heart preparation for Easter dates back to the early church. Believers from many different traditions throughout history and around the world have used Lent to draw near to the Lord.

It’s biblical to be wary of religious traditions that don’t engage the heart. When we’re just going through the motions in spiritual practices, Jesus’s solution isn’t to ditch the discipline. His call is to focus on our Father, aligning our hearts with what our bodies are doing (Matthew 6:1-18; 23:1-28). 

Lent becomes twisted when it’s a performance for others or an attempt to earn salvation. But when spiritual discipline helps us quiet distractions and humble ourselves before God, it’s valuable training in holiness.

• If you plan to engage in Lent, discuss your plan and how you hope it will help you focus your attention on Jesus. If you don’t engage in Lent, discuss a practical step you can take to grow in confession, repentance, or prayer.
   

• Memorize James 4:6, “God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble” (CSB).
   

• Pray for eyes to see places of sin in your life and the courage and strength to cut sin out (Matthew 5:29-30).

Fans around the world have been cheering on athletes from the grass to the ice this week.

Stateside on Sunday, the Seattle Seahawks swooped to victory in Super Bowl LX (60). The game started as a bit of a yawn, with no touchdowns in the first three quarters. Ultimately, Seattle’s defense stood out, forcing eight punts and six sacks and even scoring a touchdown. The game ended 29-13, and Kenneth Walker III became the first running back to win MVP in 28 years.

Celebrities were all over the commercials (watch some of the best and worst ads here) and the halftime stage. Puerto Rican pop star Bad Bunny sang (almost) completely in Spanish and transformed the field into Little San Juan (see photos here). Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin joined in, and a couple got married during the show! Meanwhile, TPUSA’s alternative “All-American Halftime Show” featuring Kid Rock drew 6.1M live viewers on YouTube. 

But the weekend wasn’t all about football. The opening ceremonies of the 2026 Winter Olympics began Friday in Northern Italy. Team USA is sitting in third place in the overall medal count after 5 days of sport on all kinds of frozen water.

On the snow, Alpine skiing veteran Lindsey Vonn crashed just 13 seconds into the women’s downhill final. Medics airlifted her off the mountain with a broken leg, and her fellow American, Breezy Johnson, took home gold. Americans also medaled in men’s cross-country skiing, men’s and women’s freestyle skiing, and women’s team skiing.

On the ice, “Quad God” Ilia Malinin landed the first legal Olympics backflip in 50 years (watch here). Team USA won figure skating team gold, plus medals in doubles curling and women’s luge.

Today at 12:30 p.m., snowboarders will carve toward the podium in women’s halfpipe finals. And Friday at noon, Ilia Malinin will spin for gold in the men’s figure skating finals. Watch here.

Whether you feel like you can’t get past life’s defense or you’re topping the podium, Jesus gives believers reason to be content—and even rejoice! There may be bad days ahead, but there are even more good ones coming in the kingdom of Jesus. Meanwhile, He offers us his presence, power, and peace.

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
With sports streaming 24/7, it’s easy to get hooked and lose sight of what’s right in front of us. 

Sports are fun, but an overdose will lead to tough withdrawal. Parents have an opportunity to set healthy boundaries around streaming to set our kids up for success, keeping the big things big and the small things small.

But the goal is not just less sports viewing. It’s more Jesus. Replacing lesser things with weightier things will help train our kids (and us!!) to keep our affections on Jesus, allow hobbies to be hobbies, and focus on our mission of loving God and our neighbors (Matthew 22:34-40; Hebrews 12:2).

What response to this story do I want to model for my children?
Gratefulness for everyday gifts.

Major cultural events like the Super Bowl and the Olympics have a way of bringing loved ones—and even entire countries—together. Whether you’re enjoying sports with friends and family, turning off the coverage for moments of rest, or unplugged from sports altogether, it’s worth pausing to thank God for the ordinary gifts of friendship and food and fun that we easily overlook:

“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his faithful love endures forever. Let the redeemed of the LORD proclaim that he has redeemed them from the power of the foe… Let them give thanks to the LORD for his faithful love and his wondrous works for all humanity. Let them offer thanksgiving sacrifices and announce his works with shouts of joy” (Psalm 107:1-2, 21-22 CSB).

• Add gratitude to your family conversation habits. Around the dinner table or on the way home from school, share a part of your day that was challenging and something you’re grateful for.
   

• Memorize Psalm 107:1-2 “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his faithful love endures forever. Let the redeemed of the LORD proclaim that he has redeemed them” (CSB).
   

• Pray for wisdom to set healthy boundaries around sports (and other) streaming in your home, and pray that the Lord would grow your love for Him so that it eclipses lesser things.

The Big Game(s)

Grab your flags and your foam fingers—it’s a big weekend for sports fans. 

Tomorrow, the 2026 Winter Olympics begin in Italy. Hundreds of athletes will compete for more than 110 gold medals across 16 sports, including fan favorites like figure skating, alpine skiing, ice hockey, and snowboarding. The Milan Cortina Games will take place across northern Italy over two and a half weeks.

The Stars and Stripes are hoping for more medals after finishing fifth in Beijing’s overall medal count in 2022. A strong women’s figure-skating trio and the return of NHL hockey players may give Team USA the boost it needs. See more storylines to watch here.

Stateside on Sunday, nearly 100 million Americans are expected to tune into Super Bowl LX (that’s 60). The Seattle Seahawks will take on the New England Patriots at 6:30 ET in Santa Clara, CA. The big game is expected to be tight—both teams rank near the top of the NFL in scoring on offense and defense.

Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny will take the field at halftime, but he’ll have competition. Turning Point USA, the organization founded by late conservative activist Charlie Kirk, is hosting an “All-American Halftime Show.” Kid Rock is headlining, promising “great songs for folks who love America.”

ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE
Sports are a beautiful picture of the Christian life. Elite athletes practice with focus and discipline, orienting their entire lives around their sport. For Christians who run with endurance on Jesus’s narrow way, there’s a golden prize on the other side of the long, grueling, sometimes mundane discipline. 

“Don’t you know that the runners in a stadium all race, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way to win the prize. Now everyone who competes exercises self-control in everything. They do it to receive a perishable crown, but we an imperishable crown.”

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
Our kids will see and hear things at the Olympics and the Super Bowl that don’t line up with godly values… and it shouldn’t surprise us that the world is worldly (1 Corinthians 5:9-10). Values like modesty, humility, and self-control are distinctly countercultural. 

Instead of becoming frustrated when your kids are confronted with the ways of the world, use these moments as opportunities to disciple them. Share how a life with Jesus is different and why it’s so much better. 

Contrasting life in the Spirit with life in the flesh not only teaches our kids how to relate with God; it teaches them how to relate with people who don’t know Him. When we look behind the worldliness and see broken, hurting people rather than enemies to confront, we’re positioned to love our neighbors.

What gospel lesson can be taught through this story?
Athletes experience disappointment and failure more often than victory.

For every Olympian who gets the gold, there are dozens who trained their hardest and didn’t make the podium. For every football player who gets a Super Bowl ring, there is another who came this close and missed it (plus thousands more who couldn’t make the big game).

Believers in Jesus find purpose and meaning beyond what we’re able to achieve. Our identity is not wrapped up in what we do; it’s found in seeking and knowing Jesus: “If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more… But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:4-8, ESV).

• Read this story about the end of a Christian athlete’s Olympic dreams to your kids, then discuss: What did you think of her story? Is there anything you’re disappointed about? What could you learn from Vera about responding to disappointment?

• Pray that God would help you share the gospel with your kids when you’re confronted with worldliness, that He would grow your love for hurting nonbelievers, and that He would give you endurance and faith to respond to failure.

Second Fatal Minneapolis Shooting

Federal officers fatally shot a man during an immigration operation in Minneapolis on Saturday. 

His name was Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen and ICU nurse. 

What happened? 
Videos show Pretti filming ICE agents with his phone. Pretti appears to try to help a woman who was pushed to the ground by an ICE agent. An officer appears to pepper-spray Pretti in the face and pull him to the ground. Several agents surround Pretti, then multiple gunshots are fired.

The videos have fueled different accounts of whether the officer’s actions were justified.

What are the dueling accounts?
On Saturday, DHS Secretary Noem said Pretti’s actions were “domestic terrorism.” She said Pretti had a “semi-automatic handgun” and suggested he intended to “kill law enforcement.” Noem said the officer “fired defensive shots” after Pretti “violently resisted” being disarmed.

Minnesota Governor Walz (D) called the DHS’s account “nonsense.” He demanded President Trump remove the “3,000 untrained agents” from Minnesota so they don’t “kill another American.” Pretti’s parents say that their son was “clearly not holding a gun when attacked.” 

This week, the White House has softened its defense of the Border Patrol agents, and the two who fired their guns have been placed on administrative leave. Officials say they want to “let the facts and the investigation lead.” 

What now?
President Trump is replacing the controversial head of Minneapolis ICE ops with a more moderate leader. Trump and Democratic leaders in Minneapolis are now talking and cooperating. 

Federal officials are investigating the shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Governor Walz says Minnesota will also “conduct independent investigations.”

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
One reason the unrest, violence, and fear in Minneapolis is upsetting is because it's a jarring departure from our typical experience.

While we mourn it and seek to calm the tension in our communities, allow the unrest to remind you of all the brothers and sisters in Christ around the world for whom violence and fear are a daily experience. Their homelands are chaotic; they fear for their lives when they gather for worship; their families are not safe.

Hebrews tells us to “Remember… the mistreated, as though you yourselves were suffering bodily” (13:3 CSB). Pray for them and give thanks for the good news of Jesus, which promises a good ending and comfort while we wait.

What might my kids misunderstand about this story?
We can’t do much about most of what is in the news. And that’s okay.

When my only options to get involved in an issue are to contact my representative or pray, then it’s time to accept that I can’t impact the situation directly. A Senator could do something, and God could do something… but we alone can’t. 

God has placed you and me in positions to make a real impact in many lives and situations… they’re just rarely in the news. To make a meaningful difference in our own spheres of influence—even if that sphere is just within our own families—sometimes we have to do nothing about the news.

• Make a list of the people and situations you do have influence over: family, friends, teammates, coworkers, neighbors… Consider the impact you are having currently and decide on one step you can take to show Jesus to them.
   

• Memorize 1 John 2:8-10 “The darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. The one who says he is in the light but hates his brother or sister is in the darkness until now. The one who loves his brother or sister remains in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him” (CSB).
   

• Pray with us: Good Shepherd, we come to You in a dark valley; lead us beside quiet waters and still our burdened souls. With Your goodness and mercy, relentlessly pursue those who are mourning. Lead law enforcement in paths of righteousness, that they will be fearless when confronting wolves but discerning and gentle when they meet lambs. Still the anxiety, anger, and fear in Minneapolis and across the country. Give investigators insight and give courts discernment, and grow Your people’s faith that You will soon right every wrong. May we be beacons of light and hope while we wait on You. Amen.

Greenland

President Trump has been talking about turning Greenland into Red-White-and-Blue-land.

The massive island sits in the Arctic Circle between North America, Russia, and Europe (see map here). Greenland is a territory of Denmark, and it’s home to ~57,000 people (roughly the population of Key West, FL). The population mostly governs itself, but it relies on Denmark for defense, funding, and relations with other countries.

Why does President Trump want this not-so-green hunk of ice? Two main reasons:

1. It sits between Russia and the States… who are not besties. Trump says Greenland’s strategic location will help the U.S. defend itself. 

2. Greenland is flush with rare-earth minerals, which are key for all kinds of tech production.

Things got real on Saturday. President Trump announced the U.S. is going to tax eight European nations 10% until they make a deal for America to purchase Greenland. He said, “world peace is at stake.” In response, Greenlanders said their land is “not for sale,” and the U.S.’s European allies stood behind the islanders. 

The disagreement was the iceberg in the room as President Trump headed to Switzerland to meet with world leaders this week. Yesterday, his tariff threats thawed after meeting with a leader of NATO (an alliance that includes the States and many European nations). Mr. Trump said the leaders “formed the framework of a future deal” that includes defense and mineral rights. He said tariffs are off the table.

The stock market warmed at the news, with tech companies like Nvidia leading the comeback.

ABOVE ALL, LOVE
Most of us have very little control over geopolitics.  But all of us have control over how we show up for our loved ones, those we’ve recently met, those we pass by, and even those we’d rather avoid. Invest in what you can control—and do so with love.

“Love one another deeply as brothers and sisters. Take the lead in honoring one another. Share with the saints in their needs; pursue hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.”

What gospel lesson can be taught through this story?
World leaders’ fight over Greenland is fundamentally a fight for control of resources and security. We (probably) can’t relate to managing complicated matters of state, but we all wrestle with the impulse to fight for control.

God's design is not for us to be the master controllers of our lives, but to be people of faith (Proverbs 3:5-6; Mark 10:13-16). That means trusting in His will, even when it's uncomfy, not as glamorous, or leads straight to suffering. Walking in faith requires us to give up our control, trust God, and be willing to say, “not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42, NIV).

When you’re overcome by the desire to take the reins, pray for faith (Luke 11:9-13).

How can I model loving an enemy when discussing this story?
By trying to understand them so you can grow empathy and compassion.

President Trump says his priority is safety and security. That’s not a bad thing to want—it's the government's job to create a safe environment in which its people can flourish.  World leaders want to maintain peaceful international relationships. Greenlanders want to preserve their sense of home; their identity, history, and culture are all wrapped up in this Arctic package.

Which priorities have the most weight in any given scenario is where believers need wisdom. But as we exercise that wisdom, curiosity about others will make us better decision-makers and grow our love.

• Look up Greenland on Google Earth or in an encyclopedia. Pick one thing about the land or culture that surprises you, and share it with each other.
   

• Memorize Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways know him, and he will make your paths straight” (CSB). Need some help? Use this song!
   

• Pray for President Trump and other world leaders to have wisdom and empathy in their discussions about Greenland this week: “Lord and Master, you have given these rulers the power of sovereignty through your own mighty power… Grant unto these leaders health, peace, unity, and stability, so they can administer without failure the government you have given them. For you—Heavenly Master and King of the Ages—you give ordinary people glory, honor, and power over all things in this world. ICE Shooting

A federal immigration agent shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis last Wednesday, and protests erupted across America. 

The ICE agent shot 37-year-old Renee Good, a U.S. citizen. Good's car was partially blocking a neighborhood street as she protested a raid by ICE agents. Footage shows agents approaching her car, ordering her to get out, and trying to open the car door. Good accelerated, running into an agent who was in front of her car. That agent shot through the windshield, killing Good.

DHS says the agent later went to the hospital to be treated for “internal bleeding.” Whether his life was in danger has been passionately debated. 

The White House is standing behind the agent. They say he’s an experienced agent who had recently been injured by a car. They say Good used her car as a weapon after “stalking” agents all day. Others say the agent was not in real danger. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D) said ICE was bringing “the opposite” of “safety.” He colorfully demanded that agents leave the city.

Over a thousand “ICE Out for Good” protests were held across the nation over the weekend. They were showing support for Good and protesting ICE raids like the one in Minneapolis. About 1,000 more immigration agents joined the ~2,000 already deployed to the area. Monday, the state of Minnesota and the Twin Cities announced they’re taking the Trump administration to court over the White House’s “federal invasion.”

ABOVE ALL, LOVE
Believers have an opportunity to be anchors of love and peace during days of division and contention. Approach sensitive conversations with humility, curiosity, and grace, pursuing justice in a way that shows God’s Spirit at work in you. 

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.”

Ask your kids what they have already heard about this story.
Chances are, they’ll surprise you. 

Ask questions to gauge understanding: “What have your friends been saying about this?” or “What have you seen online?” Ask questions to cultivate curiosity and compassion: “What do you think motivates the people supporting Renee, and what motivates the people supporting the agent(s)?” Ask questions about what’s next: “What does this story make you want to do?”

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
When something divisive happens, taking a side is less important than having empathy and compassion for both sides.

It’s OK to have a stance on contentious issues… but more opinions in a noisy, tragic moment is not what the world needs from believers. The world needs comfort, humility, compassion, and hope (Colossians 3:12-17). 

The courts will sort out justice, and we can hold them accountable to do so. But setting ourselves against some of our neighbors on a divisive issue makes it harder to love and draw near to them (Luke 10:25-37). We’re on the side of the kingdom of heaven, where love trumps knowledge (1 Corinthians 8:1; 13:1-13; 2 Corinthians 5:20).

• Learn together. What gaps in your knowledge did you notice as you discussed this story? Do a little digging, then share what you learned with each other. Did your findings change how you see this story?
   

• Memorize Colossians 3:12-14, “Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a grievance against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you are also to forgive. Above all, put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity” (CSB).
   

• Pray with us for everyone affected by this tragedy: Good Shepherd, we come to You to still our burdened souls. Minister to Renee’s family as their world rips apart. Give ICE agents and local law enforcement peace to carry out their duties with faithfulness and integrity. Quiet anxiety, anger, and fear across the country. And protect believers from our enemy, whose seeds of hatred grow into weeds of discord that choke out our fruitfulness for Your kingdom.

Captured in Caracas

The U.S. captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in a surprise raid on Saturday.

President Trump said the dictator and his wife, Cilia Flores, were seized during a “large-scale strike” in the capital of Caracas. Special forces breached the steel doors of their H home to catch them off guard. The couple was choppered to a U.S. Navy vessel, then flown to New York (see their journey). 

The U.S. estimates that 75 Venezuelan and Cuban security forces and some civilians were killed in the confrontation at Maduro’s home. No Americans died, but seven were injured. 

Why did the U.S. want Maduro?
The U.S. is accusing him of helping drug traffickers, planning illegal drug sales, and breaking weapons laws.

In 2020, the U.S. said Maduro helped run the Cartel de los Soles, a drug-trafficking network that allegedly moved massive amounts of cocaine into the States. Then, Maduro remained in power after Venezuela’s 2024 election, even though most people agree he actually lost by a lot. In August, the Trump admin said it would pay $50 million for info leading to Maduro’s arrest.

How are people responding to the capture?
Videos showed Venezuelans taking to the streets to celebrate Maduro’s capture (watch here). 

Democrats in Congress call Trump’s Venezuela plan “vague,” illegal, and a distraction from issues on the home front. Republicans are defending Trump’s “decisive and justified” operation. 

What’s next?
President Trump said the U.S. will take control of Venezuela’s oil (they have a lot) and “run the country” until an election. Venezuela’s Vice President, Delcy Rodríguez, was sworn in as acting president. She didn’t like Maduro’s “kidnapping” but promised to cooperate with Trump.

Maduro and his wife appeared in court in New York on Monday. They pleaded “not guilty,” and Maduro said he’s “still president.” The couple will remain in custody in Brooklyn, with another hearing scheduled for March and a full trial expected in 2027.

Political chaos doesn’t intimidate the King of kings. Uncertain times are an opportunity for believers to demonstrate our faith in His good leadership.

How can I model putting my hope and trust in Christ when discussing this story?
Regime change stirs up fear, anxiety, and anger. 

Believers have an opportunity to radiate hope in Christ our King, who can’t be toppled in an overnight raid. His rule is steady, and His plan is not shaken by even the biggest world news. His unchallenged power means that ultimately, all will be well with us and our world.

Shine Christ's light into the tense corners of your community this week: “You are the light of the world... No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house... Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father” (Matthew 5:14-16 CSB).

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
Venezuelans are facing uncertainty, and Americans’ confidence in government is trending down. How can we respond when life takes an uncontrollable turn?

God’s will for you is not that you accomplish certain things: the best college, dream job, picture-perfect family. For those goals, a good government is pretty important. God’s will for your life is that you become more like Jesus (1 Thessalonians 4:3). You don’t need a stable government for that. What you need is the presence of the God who uses hard times to shape you into someone marked by endurance, character, and hope (Romans 5:3-4).

• Discuss: Has your life taken any uncontrollable turns? What is your next small step for becoming more like Jesus in that circumstance?
   

• Memorize 1 Thessalonians 4:3, “For this is God’s will, your sanctification” (CSB).
   

• Pray for Venezuela and for your own heart: King of kings, You sit enthroned over all creation, and nothing in this world happens apart from Your hand. When world events shock us, settle us with reminders of Your sovereignty. King of glory, give Venezuelan and American leaders the wisdom to make decisions that bring glory to You and good to Your people. King of peace, help American and Venezuelan leaders seek peaceful resolutions. And when those around us are overwhelmed by today’s events, help us to lovingly share the peace that comes from knowing You as our good, almighty, eternal Lord and Savior. Amen.

Have you ever wondered why we start the year on January 1?

These days, our calendar is based on Earth’s orbit around the sun. But early calendars often followed the moon’s phases. Without careful adjustments, lunar months could drift through the seasons. July would end up with winter weather, and January would bring summer’s heat.

So, in 46 B.C., Emperor Julius Caesar took the whole Roman Empire solar. His Julian calendar had 365 days and a leap year every four years (so, 365.25 days per year). January 1st was set as the calendar’s beginning to honor Janus, the Roman god of beginnings.

The Julian calendar was a big improvement, but it wasn’t perfect. It actually takes 365.242199 days for the Earth to orbit the sun, meaning Julius’s calendar would be off by 1 day every 128 years. This time, the Catholic Church stepped in to set the dates straight. 

In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII and some mathematicians created the Gregorian calendar. They subtracted some dates and made new rules for leap years. Catholic countries adopted their leader’s calendar quickly, while others took hundreds of years. Great Britain and its colonies didn’t hop on board until 1752! (See who adopted the calendar when.) Frankly, it was a mess.

While many cultures celebrate the new year on different dates (like Lunar New Year in East Asia or Rosh Hashanah in Judaism), the Gregorian calendar is now the international standard for governments.

CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
A new year often makes us look ahead with resolutions, goals, and the pursuit of new habits. But Scripture reminds us of something even better: new beginnings don’t depend on a calendar date, but on the God who makes everything new. 

“Because of the LORD’s faithful love we do not perish, for his mercies never end. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness!”

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
A new year isn’t meaningful just because the calendar changes. 

It’s meaningful because it’s an opportunity to celebrate God’s faithfulness, maintaining order in His creation and sustaining us through all of life’s seasons. The Lord has carried the earth on its path around the sun yet again; He’s seen us through spring, summer, fall, and winter; He’s guided us in the big and in the ordinary parts of our lives.

No matter what this year brings, God walks with us, guides us, and gives us new mercies every single morning. Give thanks for His faithfulness.

What gospel lesson can be taught through this story?
We love dreaming about the “new me” that comes when we change the calendars, make resolutions, and get our fresh dose of willpower at the start of each year. But our willpower can’t quite make us who we want to become. Only the Holy Spirit can truly make us new.

Because of Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection, we become new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17). The Spirit gives us power for a life of love, joy, and peace (Galatians 5:22-23). A new year helps us remember the bigger truth of the gospel: God is making all things new—including us!

• Sing “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” together, celebrating God’s goodness. Then, as you make your resolutions, consider how the “new year, new you” can align with the new heart God has given you.
   

• Memorize Lamentations 3:22-23, “Because of the LORD’s faithful love we do not perish, for his mercies never end. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness!” (CSB).
   

• Offer a prayer like this one: “Open our eyes and our hearts, O Lord, to your words and truth… Prepare our bodies for the labors of this year. Give us strength and health to complete them. Prepare our minds for the demands of this year. Grant us clarity, creativity, and discernment. Prepare our souls for those sorrows and joys and celebrations and disappointments we will encounter, that every circumstance would serve only to draw us nearer to You. The First Christmas

It’s one of the most famous stories ever told… and the best, because it really happened. 

Over 2,000 years ago, Caesar Augustus ordered a census of the entire Roman Empire, requiring everyone to return to their family’s hometown to be counted (Luke 2:1-5). That’s why Joseph and Mary traveled about 90 miles from Nazareth to Bethlehem (the city of Joseph’s ancestor, King David).

With no guest rooms available, they found shelter in the place where animals were kept, and that’s where Jesus was born. Shepherds nearby saw angels announcing, “Today in the city of David a Savior was born for you.” They hurried to see the baby and spread the news.

Months, or even years later, wise men (or magi) from the East followed a star to find the child. They brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and worshipped Him.

Historians believe Jesus was born between 6 and 4 B.C. And probably not in December. Early Christians later chose that date to celebrate the Light of the World coming during the darkest time of year. 

Christmas is the good news—the best news—that Immanuel, God Himself, came to earth to be with us.

CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
At Christmas, we celebrate far more than a birthday. We celebrate God keeping His promise… something He always does. Jesus is proof that God doesn’t stay distant. He entered our broken world to bring light, peace, and salvation.

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
That Christmas is about receiving the greatest gift: Jesus Himself.

Every other gift, no matter how exciting, points back to Him. Because Jesus came, lived the perfect life, died the death we deserve, conquered death, and remains at the right hand of His Father, we can know God personally. The same God who spoke the stars into being chose to dwell among us… and now, through His spirit, He dwells within us (1 Corinthians 3:16).

Remind your kids that God’s love isn’t something they have to earn. It’s freely given through Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9).

What response do I want to model for my children?
Worship, gratitude, and joy. 

Let your family see you pause and reflect on what God has done. Before presents or family gatherings, take time to pray together and thank God for His presence in your life. 

When you give gifts, talk about how giving mirrors the heart of the Giver, who gave His Son for us (John 3:16). Remind your kids that every good gift, including the best gift of Jesus, is a reason to rejoice.

• Take time to reflect on all the ways the gift of “God with us” changes our lives, now and forever.
   

• Memorize John 1:14, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (CSB).

Persons of Interest

Authorities are investigating mass shootings in Rhode Island and Australia.

On Saturday afternoon, a gunman opened fire at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He killed two students and injured at least nine others inside an engineering building. Police took a suspect into custody Sunday morning but later released him. The FBI is offering a reward for information about a person of interest (see the wanted poster).

The next morning in Sydney, Australia, there was a terrorist attack at Bondi Beach. At least 16 people were killed, and more than 40 were injured. Father and son shooters targeted more than 1,000 Jewish people gathered for a Hanukkah celebration. Police shot both gunmen at the scene, killing one. Police also found and removed bombs from a nearby vehicle.

A 43-year-old shop owner is being praised for his bravery. Video shows Ahmed al Ahmed tackling one of the shooters and taking his weapon (watch the heroic but frightening moment here). Ahmed is recovering from gunshot wounds.

Australia’s prime minister says the attackers were motivated by ideas from the Islamic State, an extremist group. This was the country’s largest mass shooting in nearly 30 years.

Eternal Father, draw near to Australia and Rhode Island with comfort for those who are mourning. Mighty God, heal the critically wounded and traumatized. What gospel lesson can be taught through this story?
Stories like these interrupt Christmas cheer with the inescapable darkness of this world.

But darkness and violence aren’t incompatible with Christmas—they’re the reason for it. Jesus was born during the rule of a violent king and forced into exile in Egypt, only to suffer violence at the hands of His own people (and their oppressors) at the cross.  

Emmanuel enters into our darkness to overcome it (John 1:5). His mission is to “disperse the gloomy clouds of night and death’s dark shadows put to flight.” When He died and rose again, evil lost its power (Colossians 2:15). And soon, He’ll banish its presence forever.

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
Your kids can be part of pushing back darkness.

Ahmed’s bravery is a spot of brightness in a tragic situation. Although most of us will never be confronted with a shooter to tackle, we have small opportunities every day to shine light in bleak places—a kind word for a friend being bullied; an expression of gratitude to interrupt a cycle of complaining; a gentle response to a harshly spoken word; a compassionate prayer for those who are mourning this season.

Pushing back darkness takes courage. Pray that the Spirit would empower us for His work.

• Sing “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” together.
   

• Memorize John 1:4-5, “In him was life, and that life was the light of men. That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it” (CSB).
   

• Pray for the communities affected by these tragedies to know the comfort of Emmanuel and pray for courage to push back darkness in your own community.

Social Disservices?

Minnesota’s been caught in a blizzard of scandal.

It all centers around the northern state’s social services—government programs that help meet struggling people’s basic needs for things like food, housing, and work. Reports say that a scam within social services stole hundreds of millions of dollars that taxpayers had paid the government. A children’s food distribution organization, a program for seniors with disabilities, and services for children with autism were reportedly caught up in the corruption scheme.

Dozens of people have been charged with fraud (lying to get money). Some have been accused of giving stolen money to an Islamic terrorist organization in Somalia, a majority Muslim country in East Africa. They deny it.

President Trump blamed “Somali gangs” for “terrorizing” Minnesota (most of the fraud defendants are of Somali descent). And he blamed the state’s Democratic governor, Tim Walz, for not addressing the scandal.  

Republicans in the House of Representatives are investigating the Governor. The U.S. Treasury is looking into whether money went to terrorists. Walz says he “welcomes” the investigations.

CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
Unless you live in Minnesota, there’s probably not much you can do about these allegations and investigations. What you can do is audit your own integrity with the resources God has entrusted to you. Are you using your time and money in a way that pleases Him, or are you using it for your own comfort?

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
Minnesota was responsible for protecting taxpayer money, and its apparent failure stings even more because funds were intended to help those in need. 

Human oversight seems to have failed here, but God’s oversight won’t. Nothing escapes His notice—even secret schemes: “God will bring every act to judgment, including every hidden thing, whether good or evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:14 CSB).

Judgment can feel like a scary word, but it’s actually very good news. God’s judgment is His promise to set everything right. And God’s people have no need to fear—not because we’re good enough on our own, but because Jesus “rescues us from the coming wrath” (1 Thessalonians 1:10 CSB).

How can I model loving an enemy when discussing this story?
Showing compassion to strangers.

When we bear the name “Christian,” how we speak about and behave toward immigrants—criminal or not—reflects on Christ. Don’t make assumptions about strangers’ stories; show curiosity and compassion (Leviticus 19:33-34); and speak about foreigners, fellow image-bearers of God, with dignity and respect.

Believers in Jesus know what it’s like to live in a land that’s not our own: “Dear friends, I urge you as strangers and exiles to abstain from sinful desires that wage war against the soul. Conduct yourselves honorably among the Gentiles, so that when they slander you as evildoers, they will observe your good works and will glorify God on the day he visits” (1 Peter 2:11-12 CSB).

• Share Christmas joy with a near-stranger in your life. New kid in class? New coworker? Neighbor who just moved in? Show compassion and hospitality by sharing your Christmas cookies, making them a card (ideas below), or inviting them to church or dinner.  
   

• Memorize Hebrews 13:16, “Don’t neglect to do what is good and to share, for God is pleased with such sacrifices” (CSB).
   

• Pray for justice and peace in Minnesota, and that God’s people would lead the way in showing compassion and hospitality to strangers.

National Guard Shooting

Two members of the West Virginia National Guard were shot in Washington, D.C. last Wednesday. Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, died on Thanksgiving, and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains in “serious condition.”

The service members were patrolling near the White House as part of President Trump’s plan to control crime. A man reportedly “came around the corner” and “immediately started firing.” Other Guard members exchanged fire with the shooter and caught him. 

The suspect is a 29-year-old Afghan national with no criminal history. When American troops withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021, he came to the U.S. under a special program for Afghans who helped U.S. forces. He was part of a CIA-led group fighting terrorism. His motive for targeting the National Guard is unknown.

After the attack, President Trump promised to "permanently pause migration from all third-world countries.” The U.S. also stopped all decisions about asylum (a process that lets people from other countries stay in America for safety). Then, Defense Secretary Hegseth said 500 more National Guard members will be sent to the capital.

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
If this story makes you sad or angry… that’s okay. Aching over what’s wrong in the world isn’t a sign of weak faith; it’s often the sign of a soft, alive heart that longs for God’s promises to come true.

The Bible is full of God’s people pointing to those promises and asking, “When?”. Scripture says we’re allowed encouraged to bring our sadness and questions straight to God and say, “You promised peace and justice… but I’m not seeing it yet! Do something!” (see: Psalm 10, 13, 79).

So if you feel heavy after stories like this, pay attention… and bring it to the God who promises a good future.

What response to this story do I want to model for my children?
Seeing people as God sees them is a habit—a discipline of love.

Model for your kids a way of engaging hard stories that refuses to dehumanize. Instead of sorting names in the news into “good” and “bad,” teach your kids that God created every person, sees their pain, and stays with them long after headlines fade.

Loving people as God loves them trains our hearts in compassion, which comes from our compassionate God: “The LORD ​— ​the LORD is a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love and truth, maintaining faithful love to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But he will not leave the guilty unpunished” (Exodus 34:6-7 CSB).

• Discuss: What hard thing is making you sad or angry? Which promise from God gives you hope?
   

• Memorize Exodus 34:6-7, “The LORD ​— ​the LORD is a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love and truth, maintaining faithful love to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But he will not leave the guilty unpunished” (CSB).
   

• Pray as an instinctive family response to hard news. Pray for those grieving, harmed, causing harm, shaken families, and leaders making hard decisions. Ask God for comfort, repentance, protection, peace, and wisdom.
