Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day!

It’s always good to remind ourselves about where we’re at in the accessibility space, and it’s good to remain aware of what’s happening in the wider accessibility space. According to the website accessibility.day, 98.1% of website homepages have at least one WCAG 2.0 failure. That’s so wild to me! I always assumed that web developers would have an easier time hitting accessibility measures than email developers, but I guess not!

So, how did email marketers do this year? Any better than the web devs? Worse?

Sad to say…we’re still a little worse.

My friends over at Email Markup Consortium tested over 400,000 emails and still found we’re severely lacking in the accessibility realm.

<span style="color:rgb(88, 100, 116);font-family:"Work Sans", system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, "Segoe UI", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif, "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji";font-size:16px;">99.89% of HTML emails tested contain accessibility issues categorized as “Serious” or “Critical”.

Email Markup Consortium

Want more information? Email Markup Consortium released its 2025 Accessibility Report today.

What’s causing this disconnect?

I think it’s a combination of education, job duties, and technology.

I feel like I’m always in a bubble when I talk about email accessibility, and I think there are always more people to bring into the space! So if you’re someone who cares deeply about email accessibility, please keep talking about it! The more people we can bring to the table, the better.

One of the biggest hurdles I see to accessible emails is throwing email design onto the shoulder of designers. In my perfect world, we’d have a nice collaboration between designers crafting lovely design systems and email marketers and/or email developers creating emails with well thought-out fonts, colors, and imagery. What we often find instead is email duties thrown onto the shoulders of overburdened designers or exploitative agencies who want pretty Figma designs, completely leaving out those who may have trouble reading the emails in the name of “brand”. There’s a middle ground here that I think is possible to find, we just need the will to find it.

The last piece of the puzzle, in my opinion, are ESPs complete lack of knowledge around best accessibility practices. Since we know a lot of email marketers are using visual editors, it’s up to the ESPs to craft accessible code, which on a whole is sorely lacking. I wish I had an answer to solving this problem. I feel like it would take a pretty big lawsuit against a major ESP to get anyone to make a move, and yet I can see a lot of obstacles to something like that happening since the emails themselves are created and sent by businesses.

If you work at an ESP, please start talking to whoever you can in your business about helping customers make accessible emails. You and your customers will win in the end!

If you would like more resources about accessibility, I’ve compiled a list of talks I’ve done, and some other industry resources.

Times I’ve talked about accessibility

Email’s Not Dead: Prepping for EAA

Email Camp: Fostering diversity and inclusion in the email development universe

Email Einstein: Email Accessibility

UNSPAM: Accessibility in Practice

Other Email Accessibility Resources

Email Markup Consortium

a11y.email by Sarah Gallardo

A Complete Guide for More Inclusive and Effective Campaigns by Email on Acid

Hope this is helpful. .bh__table_header p { color: #2A2A2A; font-family:'Trebuchet MS','Lucida Grande',Tahoma,sans-serif !important; overflow-wrap: break-word; }

Y’all. Oy vey. What news we got over the last week.

First off, sorry I went radio silent…again. (or if you’re new, hello!) My personal life keeps getting busier and busier. I love emailing you all and talking email. I’m gonna try to keep doing this, it might be less often, though. There have been a lot of shifts at my day job and I’m thinking through how I can keep bringing you all valuable content.

Would you subscribe to a YouTube channel if I started one? I found I enjoyed recording and editing the talk I gave at this year’s Parcel Unpacked. I love talking through code. I hate doing slides. So video seems like a good place for me to go. I could do some free mini-courses? Let me know what you think.

Anyway, let’s get to the point of today’s email. Are companies abandoning email marketers? It sure feels that way to me. With the recent acquisition of Litmus by Validity, and the laying off of many talented folks on day 1, I’m feeling a shift in the industry. I won’t be surprised if there are fewer conferences dedicated to our craft as companies try to reach out to more generalists/higher level employees/move into enterprise spaces.

It just feels like they care less and less about us. I wish I had answers of what to do about this, but I don’t. The world is uncertain, money reigns.

But I do think these companies ignore us at their peril. Because we are a scrappy, stubborn bunch. We are the ones who shift course on a dime whenever the ISPs throw something new at us (Yahoogle and Microsoft, anyone?). We are the ones who take our customer journeys seriously to keep the capitalistic wheels turning. I see you and the work you’re doing. Don’t give up.

Where the big players ignore us, opportunity will arise for new people and companies to move in and change things up. (I mean, look at BeeHiiv, the platform I use to send newsletter and their astronomical growth. They’ve taken on giants and are succeeding.)

So hang in there, we know a few things are true in life: death, taxes, and a changing email landscape.

We’re in this together. And if you’re job hunting and I can make any connections, please reach out.

Talk Soon,
Megan

P.S. for the love of god, someone hire Carin as your lifecycle marketing manager.

Powered by beehiiv

OH HI THERE!

After the last email, glad you chose to stick around! This fall/winter, I’m trying a new series that I’m calling (without much thought) Email Code Prompts! This idea came about after chatting with Dan Oshinsky last month about my newsletter, and I’m so excited to have some fun with y’all!

Here’s how it works. Each month until the end of the year, I will send out an email coding prompt. We’ll code and share our results. You can reply to this email and send me an HTML file (or Parcel link, whatever floats your boat). THe project can either be one you’ve worked on at your job or something completely new, doesn’t matter to me! Towards the end of the month, I’ll send out another email showcasing what you all came up with.

This is a work in progress. As we do this, any feedback or advice you have will be much appreciated! I’ve designed this to start with somewhat easy prompts. It’ll get more challenging as we head to the end of the year. Gonna walk before we run and all that, ya know?

ANYWAY! Ya ready? Here’s your first prompt:

Code an email with a cool hover effect

Send me the results within the next two weeks, and before the end of September, I’ll share with everyone!

I originally had planned to send out a newsletter about how my email design system is evolving, but in EmailGeeks I’ve been sucked into whether email development is still a viable career path. There’s been a lot of chatter about this lately, with articles by industry vets citing that email development as we know it is on the decline, and that we’re all going to have to go back to being generalists. This is especially timely as I hit my 3 year mark working at Sinch as their Senior Email Developer.

Anyway, I gave my answer about email development in the form of a voice note, so this is edited and condensed to make sense. Note these are strictly my opinions:

I think it's a very interesting time for email development because drag and drop editors are becoming more advanced. I think we'll do fewer basic emails, one-off templates, all that jazz.

And I think we're gonna move towards building out more comprehensive templates and email design systems and working on higher level tasks to make the code work in things like WYSIWYGs, visual editors, and different email builders.

My new perspective is that we can enable people build good email and I don't think email developers are going to go anywhere.

The doom and gloom perspective recently is that email developers are gonna have to stop niching and become generalists again.

I think enterprise companies will still need us. I think we will be needed for intense personalization and other more advanced coding, like interactive email or amp for email.

I think there's good work being done out there to bring email code up to standards. It’s going to be on email developers to keep talking about accessibility and how to build good emails, so we don’t need to give up quite yet. In my opinion, the future of email development is still bright.

Or at least I won’t go down without fighting!

I’m going to try to get back to writing consistently. See you in a few weeks, yeah?

— Megan

P.S. She wrote about how most best practices don’t work for her because of the industry she’s working in. Because of course, when you’re dealing with children and families, everything is highly regulated to make sure no one gets hurt.

That means there are things you can and can’t say, a lot of review from legal, and strategies that you are unable to employ. What does this mean for best practices? Well, they don’t work.

And honestly? No matter your industry, you shouldn’t necessarily tie yourself to best practices, either.

Now, here me out. I’m not saying to never follow best practices, they exist for a reason! I just think we need to question things sometimes. It’s why answers almost always begins with “it depends…” instead of something definitive, and why we always say “run the test and found out”.

Your audience is different from my audience’s, which is different from the next email list’s audience, which is why we need to do the work to figure out how subscribers engage. Don’t forget — best practices are simply the average of everyone else.

Think about your email program. What can you do to break outside the box? Is there an experiment you can run? Have you ever done something outside of best practices and have it work? I’d love to hear about it.

An email dev tip!

Did you know interactive email works on outlook dot com!? I got on a call recently with Jay Oram of ActionRocket and he walked me through some code. It’s super easy! Usually we’re used to using radio inputs for our interactive emails, but outlook dot com instead uses a checkbox input and makes your entire label clickable. Switch to that and target your adjacent div that you want to show, and voila! interactive email in outlook dot com. Can’t be as fancy as Apple or Amp for Email, but it’s something!

Random recommendation

Anime fans! You have to watch A Sign of Affection. Every week is a ball of cute romance as you watch these two college students fall in love. It’s incredibly sweet and a good escape from the world.

I’m BEGGING someone to watch it and talk to me about it. So, please watch and email me back so we can gush together. I think my husband is tired of me recapping every episode!

Alright email fam, that’s all for this month.

Catch ya on the flipside,
Meg

P.S.

At the time of sending this, I will have hit my two year anniversary at Email on Acid/Mailgun/Mailjet/Sinch Email/whatever we call ourselves now (it’s Sinch Email, though I often just say Email on Acid in most situations).

I feel like I’ve had more growth in my career in terms of maturity and industry in the last 24 months than I have in the last 13 years. Thought I’d share some things I’ve learned across the way if that’s okay?

Let’s do this.

1) Find your community.

Finding the emailgeeks community completely transformed my career. It allowed me to rapidly learn about email marketing/design/development in a way that I never would have on my own. I fully believe that I got to the next step of my career because of this place. Much love to the admins, y’all are the best.

Like all communities, you get what you give, so find your people, contribute, become friends with folks, and that will lead to opportunities. This is not an automatic/overnight ticket to an amazing job. You can’t be in it for yourself, but for others, too.

Be nice, build friendships, the rest will come.

2) Do it scared

Big job opportunity is presented to you and you know you can probably do the job but you’re scared? That’s the time to leap. I’ve always been skeptical about this piece of advice since it’s very typical, but it’s true. See point 1? This is where your community comes in. Talk to the few trusted people you’ve built up rapport with and ask their opinions. I can guarantee they’ll give it to you straight, and they’re more likely to tell you that you’re ready than not.

My interviewing process at EoA was wild (different story for a different time), and I would have probably lost my mind if it wasn’t for my friends Carin and Catherine, who both told me to keep going when what I really wanted to do was remove myself from the running. I’m so glad I listened to them, we are our own worst critic.

3) High performing teams are the key to putting out amazing work

Words like “high performing” and “innovative” used to scare me. I’m a simple person with a weird brain and these words felt too big for me to ever live up to. I always strived to be “the best”, but always felt like I’d fall a little short, and I could never figure out what was missing.

What I’ve learned is that innovation can’t happen in a bubble, and for most people, can’t happen on your own. Throughout my career I was an only. The only graphic designer. The only email marketer. There was no one else to bounce a lot of ideas off of or to help with execution.

Now I work with an incredible team that includes an amazing email marketing manager, graphic designers, multimedia specialist, and other content folks who help with brainstorming ideas and how to best execute.

It helps when we’re all having fun, too. Shout out to the core group I work with day in and day out — Julia (email ride or die!), Thomas, Kasey, Kim, and Francois.

(This is where I brag, sorrynotsorry)

Without the team surrounding me, we would have never put out an award-winning email campaign, a legendary April Fool’s email, or create an entire show dedicated to email development.

I know the job market is bad and scary right now in tech, and I hope this is helpful. If you have any questions, you can always reply and ask. I can’t promise to have all the answers, but I can try.

See you next time?
- Meg

P.S. if you’ve been on the list for a while, sorry it’s been two months since my last send.

Fun fact: I don’t have images turned on in my gmail account. I did this as a grand experiment to see what my experience would be like as a receive dozens (I keep my inbox pretty lean) of marketing emails.

Let’s just say, it’s dismal out there. Most retail emails I get either use alt text poorly or don’t use it at all.

So, in the spirit of sharing, I’m going to begin doing email critiques. I don’t do teardowns and I won’t be sharing these emails publicly. This is exclusive to newsletter readers. I dislike when people publicly tear down emails, because as outsiders we don’t know scope and timing and resources.

I hope to lead with kindness and empathy and give helpful tips on how we can bring our emails to the next level.

Alright, that said! Recently I bought myself a pretty new barbell, the Texas Power Bar. It’s the OG powerlifting barbell out there, lasts, and isn’t insanely expensive, so it was a done deal for me.

After I received the barbell, I started getting marketing emails. I don’t even remember if I signed up for them.

Anywho, this is the email with images turned off.

email with images turned off.

As you can see here, I don’t know what this email is about! It’s clearly an all images email. I could just bounce, which is what someone who does not have the gift of sight would probably do, or I can turn on images.

scrolling gif of the Texas Power Bar email

I really like how this email looks. I’m going to break it down into smaller chunks and go over each section.

Hero Section

There are a few things I’d do with the first part of the email, below:

Turn the background area into a background-image that goes across the entire body of the email, which would allow us to place the rest of the text and images above it.

Make the headline live text

Hero Section: The Gif

I love this gif. It 100% caught my eye when I turned images on. I love how it shows the different cerakote options that are available (don’t ask me what cerakote is I have no idea, I got black [like my soul] brushed steel.).

My only gripe? The bar shaft moves a little when the color changes and that’s messy Photoshop to me. It’s one of those tiny things that bothers me a lot! When I make gifs I spend a lot of time fixing shifts between frames. But honestly, at first look I didn’t notice. So it’s not awful. But I would definitely tighten that up.

Still, A+ gif. This is a prime example of how you do it in email.

gif of barbell shaft changing colors between black, purple, blue, green, and red

Hero Section: Bottom

Not a lot of critique here. The text could be live, otherwise everything from above still applies.

One critical issue is that the CTA needs to be separated and created as live text for easy conversions and for the sake of screen readers. I’d also not use ghost buttons, and instead use a full background on the image so it stands out.

2023 in large white numbers outlined in red. Photo of a man holding a barbell in the front rack position. The barbell cap is in focus showing the Texas Power Bar Logo, which is the shape of Texas. Ghost button CTA says get your bar.

Body

This whole section should be live text. The larger chunks of text need to be aligned to the left. The text is very bold.

Visually, this isn’t a bad piece of graphic design. But is it helpful to people trying to make a purchase in email? I find the background a little distracting, and we have another CTA in an image, which isn’t ideal.

This email could easily achieve the same result with using live text.

Text on a crinkly paper background. A gray CTA with the words order now is at the bottom.

The Good

For those gifted with sight, it is a nice looking email. The GIF is great, they should keep using it.

Needs Improvement

The text and CTAs need to be moved to live text instead of being placed in the image. When images are used, there needs to be meaningful alt text added.

Companies lose a lot of money by not facilitating accessibility best practices! Start from easy wins like live and alt text, and keep iterating from there.

Did you like this? Reply back and let me know (I love replies more than open and click-through rates and it’s how I judge the success of my emails).

Do you want me to critique your email? You can give me context and what you’d like me to focus on, and I’m more than happy to take a look and share here. I promise I’m nothing but nice and constructive and we all need another set of eyes sometimes.

This was fun!

I’ve always called myself a minimalist when it comes to design. In my branding days, I was known for one and two color logos, and not going much beyond that. I think too much color, and by extension, too much design, clutters things.

Design should never hinder your message. Good design augments and complements your message. Like a nice one-column newsletter layout, or a simple hero image/headline/body text/CTA combo.

The same can be said for code. Efficient code often means less code. It’s easy to over-engineer things. I run into this a lot when working on my email design system. I’m not afraid to admit I have a lot of code bloat in some parts of it — I need to go back and clean some stuff up, since I’ve learned so much since starting this journey.

I want to make my designs and code awesomely simple. Awesomely simple means design and code come together in a way that’s accessible, maintainable, beautiful. I absolutely believe there’s a way to achieve all three without compromising anything. It might mean doing things differently (yes designers I know you love centered text), and different isn’t bad. It’s just different.

I’d love to see us all get rid of image-only emails (but the brand! creative directors everywhere cry. get over it I say back the brand will be fine. include email in your brand guidelines.) in favor of nicely designed images (with alt text!) and left-aligned text.

Below is an email example I like to use in general email marketing talks that I sometimes give to small groups. I adore this branding — the green on the darker blue speaks to me — but that text is a bit hard to read. So step by step I go through what I would do. The improvements are easy and immediate.

From left to right, we have the original, original + left-aligned text, then the text broken up into smaller paragraphs. I know which one I prefer. (You can view the original on RGE.)

Interested in knowing what kind of email newsletters I like? I’m so honored to speak alongside Guilda Hilaire, Carin Slater, and Aysha Marie Zouain about our experiences and what we as an industry can do to encourage women to work in tech.

I love the quote above by RBG (may her memory be a revolution). For so long we haven’t thought twice about an organization being comprised of only men. The conversation has changed and it’s on all of us (yes, men, you too!) to make our industry more equal AND equitable.

Twenty minutes for a four person panel is not enough time to talk about this. We ended up cutting the final, and in my opinion, most important question:

During the panel I talked about organizational change and how culture is set from the top down. If you want more diverse teams, then you have to go to the hiring managers and make the argument. But what can we do besides that? How can we speak up? What do we even do?

We all have a voice in the room we stand in. Whether it’s an industry group, our home, a local community, or board we sit on, we have our voices and our influence. It’s up to us to decide how we use it.

I’ll use myself as an example. When I started planning Notes from the Dev at work, I was clear from the start that I intended to use the show as a way to highlight email developers we may not hear from often. It only took one person to give me a chance (April Mullen, thank you!), and in turn I wanted to be that person for others. I’m proud to say NFTD features one of the most diverse lineups in the email space. We launched the first three episodes by featuring amazing female email developers - two are women of color.

If you’re a known industry voice, a great way to prop people up is to defer opportunities. “Here’s a list of other people to bring on before me!” is an easy win for you and the organizer. You’re not cutting yourself off from the opportunity but you’re giving others a chance to share their knowledge. A known industry email developer actually did this with me for NFTD, and I’m forever grateful (and they’ll be on the show soon!).

It’s also paramount to take a look around the room. Are industry awards and “top email marketers” features going to the same in-group each year? Is everyone from the same demographic? If the answer to either of these is yes, ask yourself who’s missing. How can you bring others along with you? A rising tide raises all ships, after all.

Don’t forget, allyship is a practice, not a destination. You might consider yourself “one of the good ones”, and sometimes that can cause you to lose sight of what’s happening around the industry. Just because you don’t see something happening, doesn’t mean it’s not there. We all live in bubbles.

So I challenge you to look around and identify ways to help. Is there an intro you can make or a speaker slot you can give? How can you affect change at the organizational level? These are questions only you can answer.

Oh, and tell HR to post the salary band on that job listing, it’s the single most effective way to help increase the salary of underrepresented groups, because the pay gap is VERY real (and another rant for another time).

Talk soon,
Meg

P.S. If you’re tired of “the fight”, I see you. Please rest. Sometimes just showing up is okay. Here to chat if you need to, all you have to do is reply.

Powered by beehiiv

Come have a cuppa and let’s rant about email marketing and stuff. I gave a high level talk at Email Camp back in the fall, and just this month I did a deep dive into my email design system at Parcel Unpacked. (If you haven't watched either yet, I recommend watching the Email Camp talk before the Parcel Unpacked one, the second talk is a natural progression from the first.)

Anytime I show people my email design system - completely powered by Parcel - I get asked a few questions:

What framework are you using/Do you use MJML?

My email design system is completely custom and homegrown. My components were not pre-coded in any way. I'm the only email developer at my job, so it was on me to get this right and code up the entire thing.

I think using MJML would work for most people, but we had so much to take into consideration (multiple brands and languages), that it didn't make sense to me to use it. While some people don't want to deal with Outlook, I crave total control of my code and can't stand it when I run into issues editing things. Our needs were too robust to potentially be hindered by an existing framework.

How long did this take you?

From version 1 to version 3, coding took me six months. I'm already making plans for version 4, as I've learned a ton and there are modules I'd like to combine and other things I'd like to change.

Before coding began though, we looked at our emails to identify components. From there, we requested mockups from our Senior Graphic Designer, who's the keeper of the visual brand, to make sure our emails always look good.

What's your biggest piece of advice?

There are a few things I've learned from this whole experience:

Don't attempt to do this as a side project, it needs proper resources. If you try to fit this in between regular emails, you won't make progress. Believe me, I've been there, it's not pretty. Before getting started, this article by Ted Goas is essential reading.

Don't get bogged down in the details. If you code a few components and dive right into detailed problem-solving, I can almost guarantee you'll have to start over, which is what happened to me.

Design the interface. This goes hand in hand with don't get bogged down in the details. Outline what you want the modules to look like, then put it into your code editor. See how it fits at a high-level before going behind the scenes. Do this with your global styles, too.

Coding an email design system is an amazing challenge. It forces you to do high-level problem-solving, and gets you out of the mundane day-to-day code. Here you need to think about how all your pieces fit together and build upon another. Like, how do you handle multiple columns that need to be flexible enough to change width? Or reverse stacking? Where/how do we store global styles for multiple brands, ESPs, and languages? What about dark mode and adding images that change based on the color scheme? These are all things you need to think about when designing and coding these systems.

As email developers we're often asked to create high quality emails in less time with fewer errors. We're often the last stop in a project's long journey, and we get to deal with the consequences of other teams' debates and delays. Generally, emails are expected to go out on time and without error, regardless of what has happened before the content hits your inbox (or PM tool).

But guess what? With an email design system, this is no sweat. Seriously. It'll free you up to work on higher level email development. It's much easier to add an interactive component when the rest of the email is already taken care of. You'll be shocked at how quickly you can code an email.

So whatcha waiting for? Get the team together - it's time to code!

See ya next time, Meg

P.S. content creation is hard and I always convince myself that every issue is going to fail, so pls gimme ideas on what you'd like for me to tackle! appreciate you, seriously. thanks for reading.

Powered by beehiiv

Come have a cuppa and let’s rant about email marketing and stuff. If you feel moved, I’d be grateful if you shared this issue with people you know!

I switched to BeeHiiv, so do let me know f you see any issues. Hopefully deliverability will be a bit better! The design is a work in progress as I learn more about the platform.

When did December arrive? WHEN!? whew. What a year.

Anyway, I dislike those prediction blog posts that a lot of email companies put out. What are our predictions for 2023!? Will we personalize emails even more? What about dynamic content? Will amp for email finally take off? Who the eff knows for sure, not me! I can't even predict what my next week will look like (unless I look at my calendar. Which is hopefully up to date. and hopefully I don't forget an appointment multiple times even if I do look at my calendar. this is too specific. moving on.)

So, since we can only control what we can control, let's talk about what we need to do in the new year.

Change the copyright!

This is so easy to forget. I've forgotten! You've probably forgotten! We've all forgotten. An easy way to get around this is to use dynamic scripting, if your ESP supports it. That way, your automated campaigns update as soon as that clock hits midnight on December 31 (Jan 1? I'm always confused about how to refer to midnight) and you don't have to worry about a thing.

No scripting language available and you need to update a ton of emails? If you use components in your email design system (you have one, right?), you can just change that date, re-export the code, and load it up into your ESP. Or you could go straight to the ESP and change each campaign. Personally, I have a tendency to mess something like that up, so I like to just load all the code back in again. You do you.

Audit your email designs

Are your designs still working? Here are some things to check:

Are your colors accessible to people who are colorblind?

Are your paragraphs left-aligned?

Is your font-size at least 16px?

Is your unsubscribe link easy to find and click?

Do your emails heavily rely on images? Can any of the content be moved to live text?

Practicing good design principles can help any email design shine - make sure you're following them!

Check your KPIs

How did your emails perform this year? Did engagement drop off anywhere? This is a great time to craft and plan some good A/B tests. Can you test some copy? Or maybe see how different layouts perform. What if you sent a long email vs a short email, or a more designed one vs. less designed? Every audience is different and can change on a whim - never make assumptions.

End of Year Rec's

What's an end of year email without giving some recommendations!? Here are some things I've enjoyed over the last year:

Spy x Family is this year's best anime. Come have a cuppa and let's rant about email marketing and stuff. If you feel moved, I’d be grateful if you shared this issue with people you know!

You can go with this, or you can go with that.

Like anything in life, you can generally choose to code things up in different ways. Everyone has their own techniques that they've honed through practice, each with their pros, cons, and differences. While many times the visual output is the same, under the hood tells a very different story.

You could go with <strong> or you could go with <b>

Both will make your text bold. So what's the difference? Is it worth using <b> to save on characters? In my opinion, if your concern is file size, this isn't the place to make cuts. Screen readers treat <strong> and <b> in very different ways.

Use <strong> when something is important and need to be called out.

Use <b> when you're bolding for decorative purposes.

More here from geeks for geeks.

You could go with <em> or you could go with <i>

Similar to <strong> vs <b>, <em> and <i> look the same, but serve different purposes with screen readers.

Use <em> when emphasizing a word.

Use <i> for styling. Examples include foreign words and character thoughts.

Bonus! Need to style a book title? Use <cite> instead!

Mozilla has a great breakdown between the three use cases.

You could go with <div> or you could go with <table>

Oh, this is a fun debate. Should you use <div> or should you use <table>? Or why not...both!? I could probably dedicate an entire newsletter just to this debate.

I say, you do you! Whatever you like. I started with only tables, but in the last year switched to divs. I can say that when you're used to only using tables, switching to divs can be head-spinning!

Technically, <div>s are more semantic than just using <table>, so it's good for accessibility purposes. You can also create layouts that rely less on media queries.

BUT! (this is email development, there's always a "but")

Outlook doesn't like to read styling on <div>s, so you need ghost tables for layouts to work there, anyway.

Here's a tutorial by Paul Airy that goes into more detail!

You could go with spacers, or you could go with padding

Again, this is preference, but padding is basically supported everywhere, so I vote using padding to control your spacing rather than separate spacers.

Spacers use additional code like <td>s to control your spacing. I've used them for horizontal lines to separate content, but pretty much stay away from them to control my whitespace. Today, I think it adds additional bloat and can make code harder to read while developing or debugging.

Use spacers when you want to separate content in a more decorative way (like a solid line with your brand color!)

Use padding when controlling your white space.

Mark Robbins has some pretty rad code snippets on goodemailcode to achieve horizontal and vertical spacing.

Some other fun things!

The second episode of Notes from the Dev dropped. This month, I chat with MJML expert Nicole Hickman as she runs us through framework basics.
