For me, it’s cherry blossoms in bloom and the towering Taipei 101.

Haha can’t get this out of your head now, can you?

Ever since I watched my friend Emily explore Taiwan during cherry blossom season I have always wanted to go to Taipei.

That dream is finally becoming a reality next month. Yey! And of course that’s thanks to the AWW Travel Conference happening in Taipei.

What do you need to know about Taiwan visa before entering the country?

10 must-visit places in Taipei

According to the recommendations from our speaker Darice Chang at our virtual tour, I have compiled a list of places to visit in Taipei.

1. Taipei 101: This was once the world's tallest building. It is an architectural marvel and a symbol of the city. You can visit the observation deck for panoramic views of Taipei. If you are planning to visit, check the ticket prices and deals on Klook.

2. National Palace Museum: Home to one of the largest collections of Chinese imperial artifacts and artworks in the world, this museum offers a deep dive into Chinese history and culture.

   According to Darice, the branch in Tainan (Southern Taiwan) holds exhibition of artifacts like the iconic jade cabbage and braised meat jade through spring of this year. This might be your opportunity to get out of Taipei, and if you are looking for a specific piece from the permanent collection of artifacts it may be down south.

3. Jingmei Human Rights Museum: is known for its role in preserving and educating the public about Taiwan's period of martial law, known as the White Terror era. This era, which lasted from 1949 to 1987, was a time of political suppression, during which the government carried out a campaign against perceived communists and political dissidents. It’s a must-visit place to learn about an important part of the political history of Taiwan.

4. Bangka Lungshan Temple: One of Taipei's oldest and most important temples, Bangka Lungshan Temple is a beautiful example of Taiwanese religious architecture and a center for Buddhist and Taoist religious practices. Just looking at the picture itself can make you feel at peace.

5. Ximending Walking District: Often compared to Tokyo's Shibuya, Ximending is a bustling shopping district known for its youthful vibe, street performances, fashion stores, and a wide array of dining options. A photo worthy spot to explore!

6. Shilin Night Market: No visit to Taipei is complete without experiencing its night markets. Shilin is the largest and most famous, offering endless food options, entertainment, and shopping. Darice recommended Ningxia night market which has the most number of Michelin star restaurants.

7. Elephant Mountain (Xiangshan): For the best view of Taipei's skyline, hike up Elephant Mountain. It's a relatively easy trail that rewards you with stunning views of the City, especially at sunset. The trail is marked with direction boards, making it easy to follow!

8. Beitou Hot Springs: Located in the northern part of Taipei, Beitou is famous for its hot springs. You can enjoy a relaxing soak in public baths or private resorts, surrounded by lush greenery. Make a trip out of exploring Beitou and visit Beitou Night Market as well!

9. Taipei Confucius Temple and Baoan Temple: These neighboring temples offer insight into Taiwan's religious practices and architectural beauty. The Confucius Temple is known for its serene and scholarly atmosphere, while Baoan Temple is vibrant and richly decorated.

10. Huashan 1914 Creative Park: Once a wine factory, this complex has been transformed into a dynamic arts and culture space, hosting exhibitions, markets, theaters, and cafes. It's a great place to see the creative side of Taipei.

Explore food culture in Taiwan

The best way to get to know people is over a drink or food. That’s the same when you want to learn about a culture. Try these 12 different types of food from Taiwan in your trip!

Check out the pictures of the dishes below for a better reading experience 😅

1. Bubble Tea (珍珠奶茶) is not technically a food. But I can’t start this list without the honorary mention of one of the most sought after drinks in the world! This is originally from Taiwan! So try it out at its homebase. For those who haven’t given a try, it’s a popular beverage made with milk, tea and tapioca bubbles. If you are not up for milk or tea, there are different varieties of bubble tea that you can try with fruit flavours.

2. Pineapple Cake (鳳梨酥) is a popular Taiwanese pastry with a buttery crust and a sweet, tangy pineapple filling.

3. Mango Shaved Ice (芒果冰) is polular during summer. It’s made with shaved ice, fresh mango chunks, and sometimes condensed milk or ice cream.

4. Stinky Tofu (臭豆腐) is a fermented tofu dish. It is a must-try street food when you are in Taiwan. Deep-fried and served with pickled cabbage and a spicy sauce. Staying true its name, it might smell a little.

5. Oyster Omelette (蚵仔煎) is a savory omelette made with eggs, small oysters, and a starch mixture, topped with a sweet and slightly spicy sauce.

6. Beef Noodle Soup (牛肉麵) is considered a national dish. It comes with tender braised beef, chewy noodles, and a rich, flavorful broth.

7. Lu Rou Fan (滷肉飯) is a simple dish of braised pork over rice accompanied by pickled vegetables.

8. Gua Bao (割包) is also known as Taiwanese hamburger. It is a steamed bun filled with braised pork belly, pickled mustard greens, coriander, and ground peanuts.

9. Dumplings (餃子) steamed, boiled, or pan-fried, dumplings filled with various ingredients such as pork, shrimp, or vegetables are a must try staple food in Taiwanese cuisine.

10. Dan Bing (蛋餅) is a thin, crepe-like pancake with an egg layer. You can customize it with additions like cheese, ham, or basil. It is a popular breakfast item.

    
    Next two items are must-try food from the 7-11 stores in Taiwan. Just like Thailand, food in 7-11 are known to be super good!
    

11. Onigiri (Rice Balls): These are not your average rice balls. You can find them with different types of fillings like tuna mayo, salmon, and even local flavors like braised pork. They're a perfect snack or light meal.

12. Tea Eggs (茶葉蛋) are eggs slow-cooked in a mixture of tea, soy sauce, and spices. They are known to be a flavorful and healthy snack.

While you enjoy places and food in Taiwan, don’t forget to be respectable of Taiwanese cultural and social norms. Knowing them can only enhance your experience in Taipei. I have covered all of that on a separate article here.

There are three main ways for foreigners to enter Taiwan, depending on your citizenship and intended time of stay. 

Your options are:

1. Travel Authorization Certificate (TAC)
   
   This document can be applied for by nationals of certain Asian countries, such as Cambodia, India, Indonesia and Laos among others. 
   It allows you to stay in Taiwan for up to 14 consecutive days, with multiple entries within its validity.
   
   Its main benefit is the application process: it is quick, it can be carried out online and is free of charge. However, it comes with several additional eligibility requirements that you need to research.
   
   

2. eVisa
   
   An eVisa can be applied for by nationals of certain countries, such as Bahrain, Colombia, Ecuador, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia among others.
   
   It allows you to stay in Taiwan for up to 30 days and it is not extendable. Its main benefit is the quick online application process, which usually takes less than a working week. It costs around 50 USD. 
   
   

3. Visitor Visa
   
   Finally, we have the standard visitor visa, which can be applied for by all other citizens. This application requires an in-person visit to a Taiwanese overseas mission.

   
   The processing time is around 2 weeks. It allows you to stay in Taiwan for up to 90 days and can, in certain cases, be extended further. The fee ranges between 50-100 USD.

Taiwan also offers other visa options for long-term stays, but they have longer application times and many more requirements!

A quick mention of honor to the Taiwanese Arrival Card, which is mandatory for all travellers and must be applied for every time you enter Taiwan!

Other than the visa requirements, here are few more details to help you plan your trip to Tawian successfully. Please keep in mind that specific details can vary depending on your country of origin and purpose of travel.

1. Visa Application Process: Visa applications typically require submitting a completed application form, passport-sized photos, a valid passport, and other documents relevant to your visit's purpose (e.g., invitation letters for business visits or enrollment evidence for students).
   
   Some applications can be completed online, while others may require a visit to a Taiwanese diplomatic mission. Visit wandra.io to get support in the application process.
   
   

2. Health and Safety Regulations: Stay updated on health and safety regulations, especially those related to COVID-19, as they can affect entry requirements, such as proof of vaccination, negative test results, or quarantine upon arrival.

3. Duration of Stay: Be clear about the duration of stay allowed under your visa or visa-exempt entry to avoid overstaying, which can lead to fines or other penalties.
   
   

4. Gold Card Visa: For professionals interested in longer-term opportunities in Taiwan, the Gold Card Visa offers an appealing option with its flexibility and benefits. 5. Local Laws and Customs: Familiarize yourself with local laws and customs, including any restrictions or cultural practices that could affect your stay.
   
   

6. Proof of Onward Travel: Depending on your entry category, you may be required to show proof of onward or return travel upon arrival. It’s always good to have your return ticket booked as a show of proof at the airport.
   
   

7. Insurance: Ensure you have adequate travel and health insurance for your visit. Taiwan has excellent healthcare, but having insurance is crucial, especially in light of potential health emergencies. You can consider SafetyWing Nomad Insurance if you are looking for a flexible and safer option.

I did a bit of research about payment options in Taiwan. And here’s summary of what I found.

New Taiwan dollar (NT) is the currency of Taiwan

1. Credit and Debit Cards: Major international credit and debit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, and American Express, are widely accepted in department stores, hotels, upscale restaurants, and many shops. However, smaller establishments, traditional markets, and street vendors may still prefer cash.
   
   

2. Contactless Payments: Tap-to-pay services, such as those offered by credit cards with NFC technology or mobile payment systems like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay, are increasingly accepted in convenience stores, supermarkets, chain stores, and public transportation systems.
   
   

3. Mobile Payments: Mobile payment platforms like LINE Pay, JKOPAY, and PayTaiwan are popular among locals and can be used in various stores and even for some services like taxis. However, setting up some of these services might require a local bank account or phone number.
   
   

4. Cash: Despite the prevalence of electronic payment methods, cash is still widely used, especially in smaller cities, rural areas, traditional markets, and by some taxis. It's advisable to keep some cash on hand for small purchases, local eateries, and places where digital payments are not accepted.
   
   

5. EasyCard and iPASS: For public transportation and small purchases, prepaid cards like the EasyCard and iPASS are incredibly convenient. These cards can be topped up and used to tap and pay on public transit (buses, metro, some trains), convenience stores, and even some vending machines or other participating retailers.
   
   

6. ATMs: ATMs are readily available throughout Taiwan, including at convenience stores, making it easy to withdraw cash if needed. International cards are generally accepted at ATMs with a PLUS or Cirrus logo.

While you enjoy places and food in Taiwan, don’t forget to be respectable of Taiwanes cultural and social norms. Knowing them can only enhance your experience in Taipei. So here are few things you need to know:

1. Politeness and Respect: Taiwanese culture values politeness and respect highly. Use polite language when addressing others, and be respectful in your interactions. A simple nod or a smile can go a long way.
   

2. Shoes Indoors: In many homes, temples, and even some traditional businesses, you'll be expected to remove your shoes before entering. Pay attention to signs or what others are doing, and follow suit.
   

3. Gift Giving: If you're visiting someone's home, it's customary to bring a small gift, such as fruit, sweets, or tea. Gifts are usually received with both hands as a sign of respect.
   

4. Eating Etiquette: When eating with others, wait for the host to invite you to start. It's polite to try a bit of everything if you're sharing dishes. Remember to place chopsticks on the chopstick rest or across your bowl when not in use, never sticking upright in the bowl, as this resembles incense sticks for the dead.
   

5. Tipping: Tipping is not a common practice in Taiwan. Service charges are often included in bills at restaurants, and tipping is not expected elsewhere. However, leaving small change or rounding up the taxi fare is appreciated but not mandatory.
   

6. Personal Space: While Taipei can be crowded, maintaining personal space and avoiding unnecessary physical contact is appreciated. Handshakes are common in formal settings, but otherwise, a nod or a slight bow is a respectful greeting.
   

7. Consent for Photos: When visiting temples or cultural sites, or when you want to take photos with locals, it's polite to ask for permission first. This shows respect for their privacy and culture.
   

8. Environmental Awareness: Taipei residents are environmentally conscious, with a strong culture of using reusable bags, bottles, and utensils. Embrace these practices to show respect for their efforts toward sustainability.

Hi there!

It’s been a while. Last time I wrote to you I was in Mexico City. After that, we lived in New York for a month enjoying Christmas, NYC food and winter chills. Then did a big time zone jump to Malaysia and right now I’m in Sri Lanka visiting family and friends as we speak!

Yes. I’m exhausted.

All the travels and time zone changes can take a toll on you.

But I have adopted this new principle in life.

We tend to look forward to the weekend, 2 days of the week that we can finally rest. I changed my mindset around that. Now I try to do at least one happy thing everyday. Even if it’s a small one, it helps me to feel accomplished. I feel like I get better everyday by 0.1%. And that’s enough for me to be present during travels and just through simply living life. I’m proud of that.

Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon, Teotihuacán (state of México)

Teotihuacan, located near Mexico City, is an ancient Mesoamerican city known for its vast and majestic pyramids, including the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon.

These pyramids are testimonies to complex urban planning and architectural skills of the Teotihuacan civilization.

When you walk around you’ll be able to witness the beautiful frescos on the walls of the apartment complexes and temples. Many frescoes depict deities, mythological creatures, and religious rituals, providing a glimpse into the spiritual beliefs and practices of the Teotihuacan people. I felt like I time travelled while walking around.

The journey from Mexico City to the pyramids is approximately 50 kilometers and offers a scenic view of the surrounding landscape.

The best way to enjoy the Pyramids is to go on an AirBnb experience hosted by a local. They’ll take you through the city while explaining the historical significance and folklore. (Check out all the Mexico travel stories on my Instagram profile)

Visiting Teotihuacan during an equinox offers a unique experience.

The phenomenon when the sun aligns with the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan is a significant event, particularly noted during the equinoxes, which occur twice a year, around March 21st and September 21st. On these dates, the sun appears to be perfectly aligned with the Pyramid of the Sun at certain times of the day. This alignment highlights the impressive astronomical knowledge and architectural precision of the ancient Teotihuacan civilization.

«Personal Productivity Tip»

Couple of years ago, Dulitha and I did a personal productivity workshop together. One thing we figured out during the prep was that Productivity is Subjective. We tested the theory with a room full of nomads in Ahangama, and we still carry the learnings from that session.

On a personal level, productivity means how efficiently and effectively an individual can complete their tasks and goals. This definition is the same for all of us.

But we all have different individual goals, values, habits, and perceptions. So productivity can vary from person to person. There is no right or wrong answer in what productivity is in that sense.

Tip of the week is an oldie but a goldie.

It’s an understatement that this technique has been overstated in the history of productivity. But if you are starting off, this is a good place to start!

The Pomodoro Technique

It is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. The technique uses a timer to break down work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. Read from here and learn about how to use it to boost your productivity.

I started timing myself while working and it’s amazing how much work I get done within 25 minutes!!

«Remote Work Skill»

Instead of sharing where you can find remote work, I want to help you to improve your skills as a remote worker. I have worked over 4 years as a remote worker (2 years before pandemic and 2 years after). I did one 9 to 5 job during the pandemic 😄 where I worked remotely for 3 months before starting in-person.

So I have plenty of tips on what skills can help you in the long-run!

Time Management

This is a skill that is still in progress for me. I followed different types of techniques to improve my time management skills. Some of them are;

1. Learning how to set goals and priorities. I am still learning this myself. The goal is to identify SMART goals and prioritise my efforts on tasks that truly matters.

2. Using a planner or a digital tool to trac. I have used a wide range of tools like Evernote, Todoist, Akiflow, Notion, Google Sheets and Google Tasks. Based on the project I work on, tools I use are different. These days I am using the basic of all - Apple Notes and my Typo Notebook.

3. Scheduling breaks. I make sure to take breaks in between work I do. I sometimes do yoga, go for lunch, watch an episode of a TV show or practice Spanish on DuoLingo when I want to take a break. Incorporating that mindfully has helped me to stop procrastinating.

I am in a different place in my time management journey now and these are few techniques I have incorporated into my life to manage my time when I work on projects. Read more ways of managing your time here.

You can eat things like Jaffna curry, which is really tasty, and dosa, a kind of pancake. Walk around the busy markets to see all the different foods and things to buy. Also, go see the Jaffna Public Library, a place with many books and a lot of history. There are also islands nearby like Delft, where you can relax on quiet beaches. Sri Lanka has a well-developed transportation network, making it relatively easy to get around. From tuk-tuks to taxis, there are various options available. If you're planning to explore multiple surf spots, consider renting a car or scooter to have the freedom to move at your own pace.

It’s a new week, full of possibilities! Who would have thought I'd be in Mexico City, learning Spanish on DuoLingo, and petting cute little pugs on walks? Certainly not me.

And that's how life works.

You've got to take chances without overthinking. Sure, do some thinking and talk it out. Chat with a few friends who've been in similar situations. But my advice? Go ahead with what you're pondering, even if it's out of character for you.

I just love how my hair looks here. Nothing special 😁 

I want to talk about a basic topic today: how to prepare for your first digital nomad travel adventure.

This is assuming that you have chosen a destination according to the tips I gave in my previous dose on How to Pick Your Digital Nomad Travel Destination.

This essentially covers all the details I delve into while preparing for a trip. To simplify the process, I've crafted a Notion template that allows you to easily gather and organize this information for any destination you're planning to visit.

Here are the 8 essentials to prepare with when travelling as a digital nomad or a beginner traveller

Since I am in Mexico, I’ll share my research on this location as an example.

1. Legal and Documentation: Information on visas, work permits, and any other legal requirements.

This was a pleasant surprise for me. Usually Sri Lankans need visa to enter Mexico, but if you have US visitor visa, it’s visa on arrival up to 90 days. You can check the requirements for Visa for your passport here. However, it's always important to check the most current visa requirements before traveling, as immigration policies can change.

2. Basic Info such as Weather, Best time to travel, Language, Currency, Common phrases in use, Cultural festivals, Experiences and Places to explore: Understanding the locality is key to enjoying your trip.

Put down this information so you have a good idea about what you are walking into. Find a few communities of fellow digital nomads and local professionals if possible and connect with them before you reach your destination.

On our first day in Mexico, we met our friend Vi, who gave us plenty of suggestions on places to visit and things to do. We built our travel itinerary just like that.

3. Budgeting/Cost of Living: Our typical budget includes allocations for food, accommodation, flights, coffee, coworking spaces, and data. Your budget will vary depending on factors such as your dietary preferences, whether you prefer hostels, hotels, or apartments, your daily coffee consumption, and your typical data usage, among other considerations. It's important to think this through and estimate your expenses.You have to think through this and put down rough amounts. I have put down a list on the Notion template.

Accommodation takes away a major chunk of the budget. Choosing this depends on the best Neighbourhoods to live.

When selecting a neighbourhood, consider staying near areas where expats and nomads reside. This usually means better access to restaurants, a feeling of greater safety, and the likelihood of locals being more accustomed to interacting with foreigners.

Set aside a dessert budget to indulge in all the churros you crave 😂 

4. Connectivity: Ensuring reliable internet access, using VPNs, and purchasing SIM/e-SIMs cards is crucial.

I had a hard time finding an e-sim since most of the telecommunication providers don’t have the e-sim option for foreigners without long-term visa. There are few apps that you can buy sims from but they are very expensive. So far the best offer I could find was 8 GB for 500 Pesos from AT&T. There is a local provider called TelCel where you can get a physical sim for the same price if you are looking for a physical sim. You can purchase TelCel sims from the OXXO convenience store at the airport or anywhere outside.

5. Selecting the Right Gear: Verify whether you need special travel adapters or converters for your destination. You can find out what's required here.

In Mexico, as well as in the U.S., the electrical outlets are different from many countries in Asia. Devices like hair dryers may not function without a suitable converter, so it's wise to be prepared.

6. Health Precautions: It's important to research health insurance options, available medications, hospitals with English-speaking doctors, and safe water practices. Being prepared for emergencies, including knowing local emergency contacts and services, is crucial.

A well-known precaution in Mexico is to avoid tap water; we always opt for bottled water. For our insurance needs, we rely on Safety Wing.

7. Pre-Departure Checklist: This checklist covers all the essentials needed before setting off, including travel documents, finances, and packing lists. You can find it at the bottom of the Notion.

We always pack for a range of temperatures. The weather here can shift from crisp to hot or cold without warning, so we're always prepared. We have all kinds of medicine everything from allergy relief to wound healing creams. This is to avoid any late night mishaps in an unfamiliar city. We fit all of these belongings to 4 suitcases.

8. Mental Health: You need to do a bit of thinking about coping with loneliness and maintaining a healthy mental state while traveling solo or even as a couple.

If you are traveling solo, find ways to meet new friends in your destination, join communities for solo travellers.

If you are traveling as a couple, it's wise to establish ground rules for your relationship. We've adopted a daily ritual of taking a walk together to discuss our day and any issues we're encountering. This has been particularly beneficial in creating space for us to open up about any individual anxieties. I plan to explore this topic more thoroughly in a future piece.

In truth, no amount of preparation can fully anticipate the incredible adventures awaiting you. Nonetheless, being as prepared as possible can help mitigate the stress and anxiety that unfamiliar environments may bring. Let’s go into how you can pick a destination that not only meets your wanderlust cravings but also fits well with your lifestyle.

Self-Reflection

Before diving into the endless pool of possible destinations, take a moment to reflect. What fuels your spirit—mountains, beaches, bustling cities, or quiet towns? What kind of cultures intrigue you?

Jot down your preferences; it’s the first step in aligning your travel goals with your heart’s desires.

I love bustling cities but cities like Chiang Mai (Thailand) and Pokhara (Nepal) were more memorable. So it’s safe to say that I prefer nature.

Research

Now, let’s do some digging. Explore various destinations online, read blogs, and engage in travel communities. Note down your preferences for the shortlisted spots under each of the following topic when you are researching;

Best Time to Travel & Climate

Timing is everything, isn’t it? The climate and the season can be game-changers. Here’s a little rundown on how to factor in the skies and the calendars:

1. Seasons: Each place has its rhythm with the seasons. Some destinations are magical in winter, while others bloom in spring. Research the best seasons to visit your shortlisted spots.
   

2. Festivals and Events: Local festivities can be a treasure trove of cultural and community experiences. Check the local calendars for events or festivals that pique your interest. It could add a whole new dimension to your stay!
   From my experience, both Malaysia and Singapore are excellent destinations to witness Chinese New Year (CNY) celebrations, and Kathmandu, Nepal to witness Deepavali (Diwali)! Since I work with startups, I do my research around tech and community conferences as well.
   

3. Weather Patterns: If you're someone who thrives in the sunshine, a place with a mild, sunny climate might be up your alley. Look into the typical weather patterns to ensure you pack right and set up shop comfortably.
   I try to avoid Monsoon seasons in Thailand and Sri Lanka at all costs. The weather in San Francisco is nice from September - November it seems. I can tell you for sure that it’s at its best in October. With Climate Change weather patterns have changed a bit, so better to cross-check with locals to confirm the weather in a city.
   

4. Off-Peak Travel: Travelling during the off-peak season could be a smart move. It often means fewer tourists, lower prices, and a more relaxed pace. Plus, it's easier to find a quiet corner in a cafe to work on your laptop.
   I travelled to the Southern part of Sri Lanka (Hiriketiya and Ahangama) during off-peak and had the best time exploring beaches and nature quietly.
   

5. Climate-Driven Activities: Are you a surf enthusiast or a snow sports lover? Your hobbies could very well dictate your next stop. Pick a place where the climate aligns with your outdoor interests.
   Sri Lanka is a great surf spot with two surf seasons and plenty of yoga retreats and tropical fun-time activities!

Did you spot the cute dog with a marigold garland? This is a Deepavali (Diwali) festival tradition I witnessed while I was in Nepal.

Budget Considerations

Find out the cost of living of the city you want to travel to. You can do a simple Google search and find that out using multiple blogs and websites that do such calculations. When reading up, make a note of these costs - accommodation, flights and other transportation costs, telecommunication expenses (purchasing a SIM and Wi-Fi), food, coffee, and recreation costs.

It would be overwhelming at first but don’t forget that there are amazing budget-friendly destinations that don’t skimp on the adventure! This is an extensive topic that we can dig deep into later.

Health and Safety

Your health and safety should never take a backseat. Look into travel advisories, local health precautions, and necessary vaccinations. It’s better to purchase travel insurance when entering some countries, so make a point to research if such requirements exist and what other travellers/digital nomads do.

Visa and Entry Requirements

Don’t let visa woes clip your wings. Check the visa requirements and other entry protocols of your chosen destinations. Some places offer digital nomad visas, which could be your golden ticket.

As a Sri Lankan Passport holder, I have had my fair share of visa-processing drama 😄 

So here are 2 tips for those who travel with a relatively weak passport:

1. If you are a first-time traveller or if you have travelled only to a very few destinations, don’t choose countries like the UK, Schengen, and US on the get-go. They are said to have strict visa entry requirements. Choose tourist-friendly countries as your first few stops. For example, Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia are great destinations!*

2. Choose countries with visa-on arrival: Every passport is qualified for a set of countries for visa-on arrival. Find which countries your passport qualifies for a visa-on arrival and add 1 or 2 of them to your list. Please note that the visa-on arrival is valid for a certain period and it differs from country to country. So check all the applicable conditions before making a decision.*

Digital Nomad-Friendly Amenities

A reliable internet connection is your lifeline, and a cosy co-working space is a must. Ensure your chosen locale caters to your digital needs. It’s all about blending work with your explorations seamlessly.

I still remember having a hard time with connectivity while exploring certain parts of Penang in Malaysia! It was entirely my fault since I didn’t plan the exploring and working properly on that day, but you’ll face frustrating moments like this, now and then.

Community

Being around like-minded can be the cherry on top of your nomadic adventures. Look for places with thriving digital nomad communities. It’s not only about the shared Wi-Fi but the shared experiences and inspirations.

I am connected to a vibrant community called Asian Wonder Women, and I get in touch with fellow community members before travelling to a country, so that we can meet up!

Always get to explore different sides to the cities I visit with the friends I have made on this journey!

Your perfect destination is not just a point on the map, but a match to the lifestyle you want. So use the above guidance and find what works best for you!

Hello from Sunny ☀️ San Francisco!

You know, creativity often comes when you're doing everyday things, like walking your dog, waiting for your food at a cafe, or simply sitting in the park with a book. For me, it happened when I was sitting in a pizzeria eagerly awaiting my Chicago-style deep-dish pizza 🍕, and that's when I started writing this.

This is my first attempt at writing after a long hiatus. So I’ll introduce myself first.

Hi again, I’m Sasmini! You can call me Sas.

I am from Sri Lanka. A beautiful tropical island in the Indian Ocean. I am a Digital Nomad. Two years ago Dulitha (my husband/best friend) and I moved from Colombo to a beautiful beach city called ‘Hiriketiya’ in Sri Lanka. We lived there for a few months before deciding to start living as Digital Nomads.

I studied law but I am a self-taught startup program manager. My expertise is building community relationships through startup programs and partner collaborations. In simple terms, I love working with people (especially founders) with diverse backgrounds.

When I moved to Hiri I didn’t have plans. After 3 months of break, I wanted to start working again. But I was not ready to go back to 9-to-5 or in-person work. Remote work was a non-negotiable for me for a couple of reasons but the most prominent one was that I wanted to live a slow life.

So it’s been 2 years since I started working remotely while travelling. I have worked remotely on 3 Startup programs (Accelerators and Incubators) with 3 different program teams while nomading through 10 different cities.

I write this Newsletter to share lessons I learned on this journey as a professional and who knows maybe an entrepreneur one day.

Who is a Digital Nomad?

This is a frequent question I get.

Well, It depends on who you ask.

For me and Dulitha, it’s a lifestyle. Working while taking trips to different cities in the world. Our home base is Sri Lanka and we travel to different cities in the world to explore while working remotely. Since both of us have our own companies and projects, you can call us Nomadic Entrepreneurs.

We choose to live in a city between 1 to 3 months. Duration mostly depends on the type of visa we get but there are other reasons we factor in when we decide on a location. (this is a topic for a different day)

Being a Digital Nomad is a Lifestyle

Travelling and Working at the same time: Isn’t it fascinating?

It definitely is a fascinating thing to do. I always loved watching others taking trips abroad and living vicariously through them. Starting off as a digital nomad was not an easy task; financially or emotionally. But it’s something anyone and everyone can do with proper planning.

There are pros and cons to being a digital nomad. I would call them Motivations and Challenges.

Motivations for me are;

• Freedom: The desire for autonomy over my work schedule and environment. I work from our Airbnb apartment, coffee shop or a coworking space depending on the type of work I do or the weather of the day.

• Exploration: A passion for exploring new destinations, cultures, and experiences. Getting to make beautiful memories with nature and people. Watching Sunrise from the Annapoorna mountain range in Nepal to Sunset Scooter rides in Phuket are beautiful core memories I made as a result of exploring.

• Work-Life Balance: Aiming for a holistic work-life balance that encompasses travel and personal development. I learnt many things about myself that I would not have realised if it wasn’t for the constant travel and planning. When I was working I never took breaks during weekdays. I learnt how to take breaks and not feel guilty for taking them. The trick is to acknowledge the break as a break.

These motivations were good enough reasons for me to start a digital nomad life.

As with everything else in life, there are challenges I face;

• Connectivity Issues: Ensuring stable and reliable internet connectivity can sometimes be a challenge. Especially if you don’t choose the right phone carrier to get a SIM. It is important to be aware of how connectivity works in different parts of the cities you travel to. Do your research first and ask the community.

• Time Management: Balancing work, travel, and leisure requires adept time management and self-discipline. I use Akiflow and Google Calendar to make sure that I don’t miss meetings or deadlines I have committed myself to. It’s a work in progress.

• Legalities: Navigating through various countries’ visa regulations and taxation laws necessitates careful planning and compliance. I use Notion to create a comprehensive plan for each country we visit to and use Google Drive to upload all the necessary travel documents. Since I have a Sri Lankan passport, it’s one of the most challenging things to do, but what comes after is worth the effort.

Thinking about being a Digital Nomad: Where to start?

When we started nomading, we were unsure of whether to continue doing it or not. We had a permanent lease for an apartment in the city, I was in a decent place in my career, and we had made friends and lifestyle choices that needed our constant attention.

When I think about how we did what we did, there is only one explanation for it.

We took a calculated risk.

Instead of starting big, we started small.

Instead of moving to a different country, we moved to a city that we are familiar with.

We did our research about the lifestyle using community forums, blogs, articles and real-life experiences.

Some of the questions we found answers to are;

1. What kinds of places do we prefer to live in? Like shared living spaces, hotels, living in a van, or having our own apartments?

2. What are the essential things we want in a place when we decide to live there?

3. What daily schedule do we feel good with?

4. How do we like to relax or take short breaks?

5. How much money do we need each month to feel comfortable?

You’ll have your own set of questions depending on your priorities in life.

Well, easier said than done of course.

But that’s where you can start.

Start small and figure out the nitty gritty of the Digital Nomad lifestyle for yourself.

• Take a relaxing bath

• Practice some gentle yoga stretches.

• Keeping your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet can also promote better sleep.

By following these simple steps, you'll be well on your way to a peaceful slumber and a refreshed start to your morning! 😴🌙
