Mental Health Awareness Week 13th - 19th May

Mental Health Awareness Week is run by the Mental Health Foundation; this year it takes place from the 13 May - 19 May. The theme is Movement: Moving more for our mental health.

At Teach in Time we understand the importance of the connection between physical and mental health for all ages! just 30 minutes of movement a day is a great way to enhance our wellbeing.

When we set up Teach in Time, we made a decision to train for an purchase the NUCO Mini-Medics Mental Health Course. So we can deliver this into schools, youth groups, clubs and organisations. This course is designed for children, however there is alot of information in there for adult too. This course can be delivered online to classes.

Mini-Medics Mental Health Student Course

Teach In Time can deliver the Mini-Medic Mental Health Course. We run two courses, a 1 hour course, and a 3 hour course. This course can be delivered conveniently online to a class of students, through the Classin platform.

These mental health course are designed for children between the ages of 9 and 13, but can be adapted to suit children of any age.

The course includes the following modules:

• Understanding mental health

• Emotions and feelings

• Mental health problems

• Talking about mental health

• Looking after our mental health

This course will provide the children with a basic understanding of mental health, including what mental health means, how it is linked to physical health, what to do if they have a worry and the various ways in which they can look after their mental health. 

Discussing mental health with children can be challenging - so challenging, in fact, that many of us delay it indefinitely, fearing to introduce concepts like anxiety or depression at such a young age. However, instead of shielding children from these topics, it's important to develop their ability to discuss mental health.

At Teach In Time we teach. We have purpose-built resources and courses that are bench marked to the National Curriculum objectives for each key stage. All of our resources have been written and created by teachers. We have a huge variety of courses for each subject and for different key stages.

We can teach students individually, but also in small groups. As the group number increases, the cost decreases per student, per hour. We are passionate about making online learning accessible and affordable to all.

Students at Teach In Time will mainly follow a course of study. Our courses range from 10 lesson short courses, for example, Key Stage 2 Reading Skills to a 2 term, 32 lesson course, such as, Year 10 Science. Students can choose how many lessons they take each week.

Our vast library of courses make Teach In Time an excellent provider in situations where a student is no longer able to attend school for whatever reason.

Our Learning Environment

Teach In Time uses an online learning platform called Classin. This platform is designed specifically for online teaching and learning. Every class is recorded so students can review lessons for revision or to catch up in case of absence. Classes are timetabled and feedback is sent by the teacher after every class.

Homework is set and marked through the platform, by the teacher, at the start and end of every class. Students will always receive written feedback on every piece of homework they submit.

Linking With Schools

We believe that by providing this Alternative Provision, schools will benefit massively as they can still be informed of the students’ learning outside of the classroom through the Classin feedback, homework and we can even add a member of the school staff to the lessons, so they can remotely watch classes to have evidence of learning.

School Absence Is A Growing Problem

Government statistics from March 2024 show the overall absence rate at 7%, up from 4-5% pre-pandemic. Before the pandemic less than 1% of pupils were listed as severely absent (missing 50% of lessons or more), but sadly that rate now stands at 2.2%. To put that into perspective, that is over 157,000 pupils that were absent from school, more than they were present.

These absences will obviously have a drastic impact on attainment, the DfE have found that, ‘Generally, the higher the percentage of sessions missed across the key stage at KS2 and KS4, the lower the level of attainment at the end of the key stage.’ - source here.

School-Refusers

It is vital that we recognise this country-wide problem and have solutions in place to support children who are consistently absent from school. There are several reasons as to why a child may be refusing to go to school such as: anxiety and other mental health issues, behavioural or learning difficulties and bullying.

Students who are missing school regularly due to the above reasons may be labelled as school-refusers, also known as Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA), or anxiety-related absence.

It is unfair to expect children who are struggling with these issues to be forced into a school environment full time – this is why we are offering Hybrid Learning as a vital support system, so that school-refusers can stay registered at school, but access education online part-time, within the comfort of their home.

Hybrid Learning

Hybrid Learning is a combination of the conventional face-to-face learning that happens in the classroom, with online learning using a virtual classroom platform.

At Teach In Time, we have the knowledge and understanding to know that online learning can be an extremely positive experience for children and would work well for those students identified as a ‘school-refuser’. We can provide online lessons in English, Maths and Science from KS2 - KS4, taught by qualified teachers, to ensure the student is receiving the education they need to keep their attainment level up.

We understand that school-refusers taking part in Hybrid Learning would need to be monitored, and the ClassIn platform we use allows for just that. All lessons are recorded, school support teachers can sit in on lessons incognito, homework tasks are submitted/reviewed within the platform and each student receives personal feedback after every class.

The Benefits of Online Learning with Teach In Time

•  Students don’t need to travel (in some cases very long) distances to and from school.

• Learning platforms (we use ClassIn) enable students to still engage with interactive lessons 1:1 or in small group settings with peers.

• The schools recruitment crisis has led to a shortage of specialist teachers (see here), but we have specialist teachers in Chemistry, English, Biology, Physics and Maths who have excellent experience of on-line teaching and knowledge of the National Curriculum!

Mini-Medics Mental Health Course

We are aware that school-refusal is often rooted in anxiety and other mental health issues. As well as offering online lessons, we can also deliver a Mini-Medics Mental Health course online, so students can be in the comfort of their own home. This course helps them to understand their feelings, learn how to open up about their emotions and know what to do if they have a worry.

The Cost

One of the Directors of Teach in Time, Rebecca, was a School Business Manager in Staffordshire, so we are acutely aware of the constraints of the school budget. At Teach in Time, we are passionate about making on-line learning affordable. We want to partner with schools and Local Authorities.

To enable on-line learning to be affordable by teaching in small groups, by partnering with schools, students can come together to learn online.
