There were a bunch, but my personal favorite was sex hotline that talks dirty to you and sends you memes (1-800-MEMES).

It’s genius, really. In the same way a sex hotline edges you to make you pay for more minutes, the AI voice talks dirty while the AI is loading the memes. The same mechanic. Brilliant. I’m hiring this guy no lie.

Overall huge success. If you are a startup with a) an API, b) are hiring engineers, and c) are very content-heavy, then I would do 12/10 recommend sponsoring a hackathon. We got tons of new users and demos PLUS 3 very good engineering candidates PLUS a lot of content for a new video. All for $4k.

I have no recollection of this day. I think I blacked out from the silliness. No lie. I slept all day and drank tea.

Monday 3/30

3 meetings with investors I’d been wanting to meet for a minute.

Hung out in the park with one of our early angels for an hour and yapped. Got omakase with another that night. Nothing better than aligned incentives and sushi.

Tuesday 3/31

Our lead investor Slow Ventures hosted an Etiquette event - basically a how to have manners for founders event featuring a grooming expert, a caviar expert, and more.

I ate caviar. I yapped with my investors on a couch. I met some new customers.

Did I learn manners? Probably not.

You can’t see it but my hankerchief says “Fuck Off” in cursive.

While I was sitting there, I also got a text saying I was featured in Lenny’s Newsletter, the #1 product newsletter in the world.

Ok now the real reason I flew up to NYC.

I rented out a movie theater to play IG Reels.

Today is the day.

We ride the Uber down filming. I show the book that started it all. It’s crazy man, I wrote the book 4 years ago everyone thought I was nuts then I went and made the millis. At this point I’m just reading pages out of my own book to find out what happens next.

MEMES MAKE MILLIONS (IT HAPPENED)

We get to the theater.

I start interviewing people about why they came to a movie theater to watch IG Reels.

At 6:30 we start playing Reels.

It’s hard to even describe how weird it is.

We all passed around a phone scrolling IG reels, people DMed the reels to the main phone, and we liked and commented largely depending on people’s laughing and booing.

It was absolutely unhinged.

A true social experiment.

I was in talks for a TV show earlier this year with major networks about memes.

I had an academy award winning producer signed on. Budget and season planned. Locations and timing selected. It was finally happening.

And then the question came:

“Have you tweeted anything potentially offensive?”

I laughed. Bro.

This was finally the tipping point, my joker moment, you could say.

You won’t let me in Hollywood, I’ll rent your fucking theaters to play Instagram Reels.

I grew up dreaming of working in Hollywood. All good. I’m gonna be filming the show this summer for the new Hollywood (the internet) anyways.

I’m writing this post from my view overlooking the blue pacific ocean on the 30th floor of a 3-bedroom 3-bath apartment in Miami.

I don’t need to be on a set slaving away 12 hours/day or sucking a director’s dick (metaphorically or literally because hey it’s Hollywood, right).

I just need some wifi.

We’ve got millions of followers across our pages. I’ve got 7 employees on 4 different continents. We get more views than half the TV shows out today on our memes.

Meanwhile, traditional Hollywood is crumbling.

“There’s not enough work,” writes The Hollywood Reporter. “Hollywood has yet to recover the jobs in film and television production that were lost when strikes by writers and actors brought production to a halt in 2023,” writes the NYT.

Meanwhile the creator economy is fucking booming everyday.

Why do you think every actor and comedian has a podcast from Conan O’Brian to Jason Bateman?? Because the internet is the new hollywood.

As a movie nut and Hollwood wanna be, this is all a complex feeling I’m still trying to understand. I think in memes and metaphors, so a few comparisons below.

• When I was 15, I wrote in my notes app that I wanted to be on Forbes 30 Under 30. I could easily get on it now. But the best thing Forbes 30 Under 30 is known for is crime nowadays. The institution has fallen.

• When I was 17, I went to University of Michigan Ross School of Business, the best undergrad biz schools in the country. Now I’m 28 and my wife and I both agree when we have kids, we’re not sending them to college.

• When I was 18 at University of Michigan, I worked for the New York Times as a campus representative selling subscriptions to the paper on-campus and on the internet. I was the #1 campus rep in the country. Nowadays, you couldn’t pay me enough to even subscribe to The New York Times, the most corrupt paper on earth.

• When I was 25, I wrote the book “Memes Make Millions” and couldn’t get a single published to pick it up. Meanwhile I raised $3M to make memes.

• Last year alone, I was in Rolling Stone, The New York Post, Politico, Forbes, and on the front page of Inc labeled “The Gen Z Building The Canva for Memes.” After all of it, I wrote a piece called “Front Page, Who Cares?”.

What all of this has in common: The efficiency of the internet has shown the inefficiencies in all our major institutions.

From legacy media to universities to cities to Hollywood itself, the internet showed us how inefficient and rotted the organizations themselves were.

The internet is the new Hollywood (there’s not enough jobs in LA). The internet is also the new New York (you can do finance anywhere). And it’s also the new Silicon Valley (why you don’t need to move to SF anymore).

None of the old shit fucking matters.

All that matters is the internet.

So that is why I have this scar.

Like a scar, the internet will survive forever.

I’ll be filming the first episode myself this summer in France to post on the new Hollywood (the internet).

And who knows what’ll happen?

Maybe like falling in love with a toxic ex, I’ll end up in Hollywood anyways.

Last week, I was invited to meet the goat Gary Vee and got to elevator pitch him Memelord in a literal elevator.

I raised $3M and I gotta be honest I low-key thought elevator pitches were just a myth from business textbooks and they’re called elevator pitches because it’s the time of an elevator ride. Well turns out it’s called an elevator pitch for a VERY GOOD reason!!!

The most successful social media entrepreneur and investor of all time might just say “hey come ride down and pitch me in the elevator” and you better be ready.

His team invited me to go to this influencer summit down in Miami, but… what they didn’t tell me was it was an influencer summit for beauty influencers. I thought it was for tech nerds and I ended up being around hot Miami influencers all day (my wife was not happy, personally I plead the 5th! Thank you Constitutional Rights!).

And even though I’m not a hot blonde miami botoxed up boob job beauty influencer (yet), I still learned a lot about social strategy, AI x influencers, and community in 2026:

Every day I try to make content for a younger version of me out there, the 15-year-old kid who had no idea what he was doing on the internet.

It's a simple strategy, but that's what I've been trying to do for the last four years across this blog, Twitter, and Memelord, and what I try to do every single day.

If my marketing hacks help one kid out there like me, I'm happy. The same thing with memes and comedy. If it makes one person laugh, I'm happy. This is why rage-baiting or lying to your audience is stupid. It’s selfishness at its core.

There's always a younger version of you out there somewhere in the wide world of the internet. Even if only a few hundred people see your content, it might be able to help somebody. Just keep going, give it all you got.

This is 1000% accurate and great advice for all memelords and marketers.

Memes slap harder the more niche they are.

I wrote in my book "Memes Make Millions." I couldn't make a hockey meme if you paid me $10k (Idk anything about hocker), but me and my team cook up marketing memes like crazy because that's the niche we get.

Right now me and my team are currently challenging Zuck to set up a pixel live on Meta Business Center. Only marketers get the pain of this which is why it’s only funny to us. It's better to be famous in your niche than just viral.

You’d think of me as the meme marketing guy I'm always trying to get everything to go viral, but I'm actually not.

I just try to post bangers for me and my friends on the internet, and sometimes they go viral and sometimes they don't.

If you see somebody who promises that they know how to go viral every single time, it's because they're botting it or paying people.

Nobody has the magic formula to virality, not even Gary Vee.

Gary Vee on AI x Influencers in 2026:

This is now becoming undeniable.

I remember like 5 years ago when that first AI influencer went famous and got brand deals from Pac-Sun and it felt like magic or something only a 7-figure marketing agency could cook up, but now anyone can do it.

You can even cook up 10 AI videos on my dumb software Memelord.com for $20/mo. I don’t even say this to promote us, it’s more the fact that it’s so goddamn cheap to do now. If you want to stand out against AI influencers, you need to be authentic and unhinged and weird AI can’t do it (that’s been my entire thesis building Memelord).

A room full of 200 beauty influencers who yap for a living went silent.

Shit was hilarious. I don’t got much else to say except it’s true af lol.

Gary is extremely bullish on AI influencers for live shopping. “They’re prettier than you and they’ll work 24/7 shifts.”

How do you stand out? You be so unhinged and authentic AI can never replace you (cough cough the memelord.com thesis)

My thesis for Memelord has always been: be so unhinged and authentic that AI can never replace you. This has remained true and will always remain true.

3 years ago, when ChatGPT came out, I doubled down on only writing about my adventures. I don't write case studies. I just write about my unhinged, real-life adventures that nobody else can take away from me.

I wrote about partying with Peter Thiel and billionaires in Miami, launching a fake viral boycott of Celsius, quitting my job and going founder mode, and much more.

My thesis is absolutely correct and becoming more correct every day.

Be authentically you. Be unhinged. Be real and people will love you for that (or hate you). All good either way. At least you’re not AI. Tell me, can AI get 24M views reading a book like this on the subway????

1. Solve your own problems first

This has been my entire philosophy building Memelord from day 1 to our $3M raise.

Built something that solves your own problems first.

Then use the magic of the internet to find people like you.

I wanted to get alerts of the newest trending memes so I wouldn’t have to doomscroll for new memes all the time. And I wanted them to show up on my canvas and have unlimited AI weird tools. Kinda like a mix of Google Alerts for memes and Adobe.

So that’s what I built.

The plan was always to build an iOS app but I didn’t know how and I didn’t have the money, so I started Memelord with a daily newsletter for hot memes for $6.90/month. Then I watched some youtube and drank some red bull and built a no-code meme editor to $100K ARR. Then I raised the $3M and boom now we have the iOS app.

I built exactly what I wanted BY ANY MEMES NECESSARY.

People told me I was crazy, but it turns out I’m not alone. The world is full of crazy memelords who want to make millions being funny on the internet too.

I get meme alerts anywhere I go now

I wake up everyday grateful as fuck I get to build something I love because I didn’t sell out and copy someone else’s vision for a quick buck. In today’s AI age, anyone can build apps now, but can you build ones you love using?????? Can you wake up everyday grateful to work 14 hour days? Are you proud of what you built??? It’s much harder.

I see a lot of people just building lame slop apps or copying other people’s apps that they don’t even want to use just because they can now. It’s lame and lazy. It solves no one’s problems including the creators of the app. Build something you love that solves your problems.. It’s much harder, but you’ll feel much better about yourself.

Now I can get notifications for new hot memes and drop bangers from a boat!

NEW MEME ALERT JUST HIT!

2. Obsess with the craft.

In the age of AI slop, be a software craftsmen.

Sure, AI can vibe code some slop app nowadays in minutes, but real craftsmen don’t want slop. We want art.

My grandpa always told me “measure twice, cut once.” I feel like a lot of people these days ain’t even taking the time to measure bro.

Make art, not slop.

Some specifics of what I mean here:

Good UX design is hard, embrace the pain

Good design is clear thinking.

Clear thinking is hard alone. Clearly thinking about how your app will be used by millions of people of all ages and languages is very hard.

The amount of thought and arguments that goes into where to put a button is like 72 different decisions. If I put this here, is there room for this? Will it be clear for our customers? What is prioritized? What makes us the most money?

UX design is so hard, but the thought exercise of it has been the most fun part of building Memelord so far. It feels like new levels of my brain unlocked. Just a year or two ago, I was writing full-time and now building apps it feels like a brain blast!

Haptics matter way more than you think.

I didn’t even know the word “haptics” until we started building this.

It’s those little vibrations you get when you press buttons.

It’s just a straight hit of dopamine. We filled our onboarding with cool haptics and animations as our icons float around and people love it (too much maybe???)

One of our angel investors loves to say “making money is downstream of storytelling”.

While he’s usually referring to fundraising, an iOS app onboarding is one the most condensed version of this.

Can you tell a story about your app’s features and their outcomes in such a way that people want to sign the fuck up?

The amount of times we designed and redesigned this onboarding is disgusting, but it paid off. I’m proud af.

It's like comedians workshopping a joke for years or a good storyteller who actually cares about what their audience hears and not somebody who just yaps for the sake of yapping at a party.

Put some thought in to tell a good story and people will appreciate it and pay you.

3. Every app you’ve used is made by people no smarter than you (often dumber).

This was something I had to keep saying again and again to my team.

If some dumb 17-year-old kids can launch apps, so can we.

I don’t know how to code. None of my engineers had ever built an iOS app before. My CTO worked in the government this time last year.

But you can just learn things and figure them out.

yeah, there were a lot of challenges, both on the code side and dealing with the annoying app store approval process, but all I kept saying to my team was, "If other people figured it out, so can we? Everything is figure-out-able."

All because we just kept going.

It’s just the beginning.

With AI and vibe coding tools getting better every day, marketers are able to ship their ideas they usually would’ve needed engineers for.

Every marketer on my team is vibe coding tools and prototypes. At this point, it's a requirement for being on my marketing team. Marketers ship. No excuses. If my dumb ass can do it, so can you. Teams will get smaller as expectations rise of each individual employee.

#2: Resurgence of Movie Marketing

Everybody knows that movie theaters have been falling due to streaming.

But this year, I think we'll see a resurgence in movie marketing in 2 big ways:

Timotheé Chalamet is going 10,000% hard

Between his "I want to be one of the greats" speech and his legendary Marty Supreme marketing run, actors are feeling inspired and envious of Chalamet.

This is good for movie lovers.

I expect actors to start trying harder in their movies and marketing like madmen just to keep up with Chalamet. It's like Roger Bannister breaking the 4-minute mile barrier. Nobody knew an actor could market and perform like this. Now that we know it, it sets the pace for everybody else. Competition is good for movies just like it is for business

And before you go saying, "Oh, Timothee Chalamet can't save Hollywood," let me remind you, he is Lisan al-Gaib….

Before TikTok, sitting around and watching movies was lazy for stoners. Now it's a form of deep work and practiced focus. Letterboxed is a hedge against brainrot and degeneracy.

Have we fallen off as a society? Absolutely man. But hopefully we get some good movies from this.

For every problem degeneracy creates, there is a solution to be made.

I expect a lot of funding in these categories this year and apps by solo hackers who are fucking around solving their own problems.

#4: Pro-Americana Branding is in

I think we're going to see a lot more Pro-Americana branding like this this year. Being a patriot is officially cool again (it always was). But now it's safe.

Brands are already leaning more into Americana.

With the 2026 Olympics coming up, Ralph Lauren already dropped their collection. I'm seeing it around New York, people wearing Ralph Lauren Americana proudly that they wouldn't a decade ago.

I’m gonna break down how Slow Ventures is out-marketing any other VC firm and how anyone can do the same even without millions. In fact, I’m gonna give you 3 actionable marketing ideas anyone can use even if you’ve only got $100 to your name.

And last month, he and the Slow team hosted an event teaching tech founders how to party and eat caviar. Why???

Because the average SF tech nerd can’t make eye contact and despite the internet, yes, it’s still important in business. Because in the age of everyone using AI chatbots, the real arbitrage is personal relationships and IRL events. Because if you’re going to be a billionaire, you better know how to fucking party.

And oh yeah, because it’s great marketing for Slow Ventures.

Yes, VC firms do need to market too.

I know this is shocking. This came as a huge surprise to me early in my startup career too, but VC firms need to get dealflow (why every VC and their brother has a podcast). And just like any marketing, it’s good to offend some people in order to find the right people. If you’re a VC firm for everyone, you’re a VC firm for no one.

This etiquette class perfectly nailed the strategy.

• The people who get it loved it. It went viral. Got a lot of press. And me and my team thought it was the coolest thing ever.

• The people who didn’t get it hated it. The class got a lot of flack especially from the stuck-up pretentious Y Combinator crowd who thought it was too unhinged. Uh, well most of them haven’t felt the touch of a woman since their mother.

I texted Jack Raines at Slow who helped orchestrate the class, and here’s what he said:

So what did Slow do when the class went viral?

They doubled the fuck down.

Writing a book about etiquette

In my 2023 book Memes Make Millions, I wrote about capitalizing on “The Current Thing”

When a topic is “The Current Thing” on the internet, you need to capitalize on it ASAP. Make content, yap, do whatever you gotta do. Because when it’s gone, it’s gone.

Ever notice how there’s more new memes per day than the early 2010s? The Current Thing is switching faster than ever and if you don’t capitalize on it fast, you’re fucked. (This is what led me to build the Google Trends for memes memelord.com).

This is crucial for any marketer to understand.

And it’s doubly crucial when you yourself are the current thing.

When you become “The Current Thing” you need to capitalize on it HARD because it’ll be gone fast. Sacrifice sleep. Drink coffee. Do whatever you need to. I did this during my raise and all the hit pieces. I tweeted about it non-stop, I didn’t sleep, I met the mayor, and I brought in a couple milli in a week for the business.

When you are “The Current Thing” you need to capitalize on it fast. Because it’ll be gone by next week. Sam and Slow nailed this perfectly.

It’s a quick fun 1-hour read about why tech nerds should get their shit together and learn how to act at parties. The rumors are true.

I’ve been personally cooking up some memes for Slow’s newsletter Snail Mail 1x/mo.

So why is a serious VC fund posting memes in their newsletter????

Besides the fact they invested in memelord.com and it looks pretty good to have our logo in there, there’s 3 big reasons:

1. Memes drive up open rates and click-through rates for newsletters. Slow's marketing team saw that including memes drove up their click-through rate and open rate. It's the same reason why I include a "Memes of the Week" section at the end of this newsletter for 3 years straight. And why the newspapers always have a funny section!! 3. Their reader-base (VCs, investors, and billionaires) like memes too. It's not just 14-year-olds. Often, the smarter you are, the more unhinged your humor. Laughter is just part of human nature. If you think you're too smart for memes, I'm afraid it's probably the opposite.

They literally rented out a movie theater just to show a dope finance movie because they think it’s a good movie about decision-making.

How do you attract like-minded founders you might want to invest in?

Show a movie that you think encapsulates your belief system. Boom. Again, the goal here is to find the people like you and purposely isolate those who aren’t (I know that sounds harsh but that’s the reality of marketing).

Anyone can do this (even without renting out a movie theater).

3 ways anyone can market like Slow:

1. Throw events. Look not everyone can rent out a place to eat caviar and watch high finance movies. But anyone can throw an event. Hell, I hosted a fundraiser at Chipotle for free when I was 15 in high school and had 50 people show up! Anyone can do this. Start small. 10 people at your place or a coffee shop. Small is better than nothing. Have 5 friends over to talk investing. Be the connector and host. I wrote a piece about this 3 years ago in a piece called Party Marketing for Startups and I think given AI, it’s even more important. Expect more events from Memelord in 2026 (I already rented out spot for first one).

2. Post memes in your newsletter. Start a newsletter on a platform like beehiiv. Post memes around your niche at the end of the newsletter so people read all the way. If you can’t think of memes, use our magic AI meme generator and it’ll cook you up dank memes. Anyone can do this. How do you get readers in the first place? Uh obviously post memes. I did a whole seminar on this for beehiiv too.

3. Be more controversial. Post your hot takes and beliefs even when they piss people off. If you think that tech nerds need to get laid, then say it. You’ll find the right people who agree with you. This is completely free. Just write bangers. Yap bitches yap!! It may change your life (it did for me) The world is a big place. Some people might hate you, but who cares. I mean look at memelord.com. Yes we have a lot of enemies, but a TikTok just went viral about us with 100k+ bookmarks alone. The internet is a big place. When you’re genuinely yourself online, you find your people. Fuck everyone else.

Okay so what did I do in London actually? Let’s dive into it mate

Day 1

Arrived mid-day in London. The skies are gray because of course it is. It’s raining too.

Checked in at hotel, found a coffee shop near the Paddington station. Yes it’s the place where the bear live.

Ordered an Earl Grey Tea just like what Brits do. Sip a cup of tea. Reflecting the fact that I’m sipping a tea in London.

I couldn’t believe I am here. I was a poor kid growing up in Jakarta, Indonesia, and somehow making memes and being funny on the internet brought me here.

Lots of things to build, lots of memes to make, but I’m grateful.

Had dinner with a friend from college in Taiwan. Reminiscing how fucking crazy it is how we made it this far.

Had a hearty conversation, I explained to him what my job is and what memelord.com does.

Then he told me he almost joined the Lily Phillips 100 men line and how he regretted not doing that. His strategy would be to line up early and bring coffee to Lily. Funniest shit I’ve ever heard.

Walked back to the hotel. It’s still fucking raining. Made memes on the hotel bed.

Someone pinged me on Slack. It’s the X #1 Memelord, my co-worker and friend @nocontextmemes. 

I’m meeting him tomorrow and he came up with a dank idea.

I love my teammates.

I’ll bet my life savings that we are genuinely the funniest tech startup team on Earth right now.

London I am arriving.

Day 2

Met the legend @nocontextmemes. Censored his face because none of you can take it. It’s like seeing the face of a biblically accurate angel.

Yes we walk around in London like this.

We headed down to our first destination: the Church of Scientology. Made a skit that I’m here to visit our biggest client.

If you’ve been following Memelord for a while, you probably know make fun of the UK and British people a lot.

Not only because of the accent, but also because of the government ridiculous stance against memes and free speech

I’ve been living in the UK for 3 months now, and here’s what I found.

British people are funny as fuck.

I’ve connected with other memelords on X and LinkedIn, and these are the funniest people on earth.

Last week I talked to a Memelord.com power user and CEO of CompAI Lewis Carhart. He’s British in the USA, and he grew his startup via parody accounts and unhinged marketing stunt.

Satire and humor is rooted deeply in this country’s culture.

The Office was originally from the UK. South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have said over and over that Monty Python was a huge influence. Same with American comedians like Jim Carrey, Conan O’Brien, Judd Apatow. The list goes on.

This is a country full of Memelords and comedians.

But the government is making it suck for them.

The UK memelords I talk to actually love their country. So when I joke about “UK is arresting memelords,” I can see some of them get visibly annoyed.

Which makes sense. When someone talks shit about your country, of course you get annoyed.

But you also can’t deny that the UK government has made shitty decisions that make people think twice before posting.

In the UK, not all memes get you arrested.

Only what the government deemed as “offensive”

Freedom of speech created insane amounts of positive social change, gave minorities a voice, and helped topple oppressive governments.

13 years ago, the globally beloved Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) made this point perfectly ago in his speech. At one point he said:

I didn't plan it. I didn’t pay anyone. No AI slop or BS influencers needed. In fact, I didn't even know it was happening until my friend texted me:

Not gonna lie, getting a text like that is pretty scary. At first, I was like, "What did I do?" “Who did I insult?” But it turned out to be fantastic for business.

The signups are coming in faster than we can keep up (our announcement bot is literally glitching from multiple at the same time).

You have no idea how much hard work and love we put into this product.

And it’s a beautiful feeling people are recognizing it.

Considering that 18 months ago, memelord.com didn't even exist, it's surreal to be featured on a list of website that social media managers can't live without.

I literally started Memelord in September 2024!

Now, social media managers can't live without us.

WTFFFFFF.

But this wouldn't have ever happened if I didn't build a product for myself that I wanted as a social media manager.

Build a product for you first and then find people like you.

From 2021 to 2024, I was a social media manager for startups, so I built the exact tool that I wanted:

Uh, well, I did.

I built what I wanted to exist in the world, and then used the power of the internet to find people like me. If you're building a product out there, build something for yourself as customer #1. I am and will always be power user #1 of memelord.com.

Because I was building it for myself, I did it my way.

And because I'm a weirdo, that means I did it weird.

Just 18 months ago, I had never built a product, and I was working at a company where they wouldn't let me touch the product at all.

I said "fuck it" and tried to do it myself.

I launched Memelord Technologies version 1 with some Red Bull and no-code (I literally don’t know how to code).

There’s no shortcuts to building a product people love

There's a lot of shortcuts to viral marketing.

There's a lot of shortcuts to a sexy-looking product.

But there's no shortcuts to building a product that people actually love and are obsessed with and use everyday.

Our retention numbers and DAU are off the charts, our churn is lower than any startup I've ever seen, and our trial conversion rates are higher than any startup I've ever seen.

This always surprises people, but even me, the viral meme marketing guy, I believe that product must come first. If you don't have a good product, memes aren't going to save you. No marketing will save you. Marketing a bad product is like slapping lipstick on a pig. Take the time to build a good product, then go market it. That’s what we did.

There are no shortcuts for building a product people love except putting your heart and soul into it. In a world where AI can build anything, craft and love of the game are what will make you stand out as a product builder. So put your fucking heart in it.

Lewis: How are you enjoying Northern England?

Jovian: It’s so fucking cold man. I'm from South East Asia, I cannot handle this cold. It’s pitch black by 3:30pm, like, what? Jesus Christ. Anyways let’s get to it. Have you ever done meme marketing stuff before you started Comp AI?

I actually started following Jason a while ago. It was definitely before Comp AI and that opened my eyes a bit to meme marketing.

I've always been someone who likes shit posting. I enjoy memes. I think it's a good way of getting to know or building an audience. 

And then the space we’re working in right now, the compliance space is like, super fucking boring.

Everyone else in the space is very conservative and not interesting. So I felt like, if we did something that is completely different to everyone else, like memes or trying to make a cool story around the industry and product, it would make us stand out more. 

And I think that's, yeah, it's been like that so far.

Yeah, it’s literally the least interesting thing in the world for some people: compliance. Did you already have this realization from day one? That this is a boring ass space and you guys have to be funny?

I think it was more along the way. It became more obvious to me that we need to be funny, and it was just my kind of style of marketing anyway. I enjoy that side of it. 

My co founders, not so much. They're much more serious.

Sometimes we argue on some of the brand and social stuff. I'm often just go like “Guys, just trust me on this one”

I've always tried to push for more memes and funny marketing stuff, and just be like, let's just see what happens.

There's got to be a good balance because obviously, we work in a high trust environment, right? People have to trust us to deliver things so they can show that they are trusted. So we can't take it too extreme. 

But I think there really is a good balance to be found somewhere along athere.

When you have a silly marketing idea, how do you pitch your co-founders? I feel like a lot of marketers or startup founders have this problem: They have an unhinged creative marketing idea, but they don’t know how to sell it to the team.

You just have to try it and see if it works or not.

When we were first starting the company, I ended up buying the moon in Pieter Levels vibe-coded game, you remember that?

Oh yeah I remember that!

That was one of the earliest things that I spent some of our VC money on. So we raised a 400k angel check from OSS Capital, and I remember spending 5k on getting the Comp AI moon.

People were like, it's unhinged, it's stupid. It's not gonna work. You can't attribute sales to it. But deadass. We had our first ever customers mention it. They actually mentioned the moon.

The moon itself in the game wasn't going to bring anyone, but tweeting about it, making a meme around and keep telling people about “Hey I bought the moon in Pieter levels game for five grand.”

That's kind of like a meme in itself. You’re turning a situation into a bit of a meme.

That got us a lot of traction. I had like 250K views in total on X in one from buying that, right? It also got me like another 2000 followers in like a week. 

It worked, and we built up this waitlist for Comp AI., and that's eventually how we got to success with everything.

Let’s talk about the viral NASCAR-style wedding suit by your employee Dagobert. It was insanely viral. How did it happen?

It actually started as kind of a meme also.

Everyone on X knew Dagobert. He was an indie hacker and had built an audience over the years. Everyone was meme-ing on him because he wasn't shipping. He was never launching the thing he made.

And when he finally launched the product, I knew it was going viral because there was already attention around it.

So the first idea was to sponsor LaunchDay. I think I paid him like 500 bucks to be the first official sponsor.

Because we were a sponsor, Dagobert did a one-hour interview with us for the website to talk about Comp AI.

A week or two passed and he messaged me saying, “Hey, I’ve been thinking about what we talked about. I think I could sell what you’re selling.” 

I didn’t think much of it. I was a bit dubious.

At the same time, he started selling logo spots on his wedding suit. Ironically, I didn’t buy a spot. I thought it was a dumb idea. I remember him asking if I wanted a spot and I was like, “Yeah, maybe not.”

He eventually reached out again saying, “Look, I sold all the spots. I really think I could sell SOC2 compliance if you give me a chance.”

I said, “You know what, fuck it. Let’s just try it.”  - 

I had zero expectations. He becomes our first sales hire and closes over 100k in sales. I was like, “Shit. He can actually sell.” That’s when I gave him a job. 

He eventually added Comp AI to the back of his suit for free because he was excited to promote us. He’s doing huge numbers now. He’s actually in New York with me right now.

The suit went insanely viral. CNN covered it, People Magazine covered it. Did it actually bring in sales?

Yeah. We use an AI note-taker that joins every sales call. If someone mentions something like our X parody account (which we’ll talk later) or Dago’s suit, it gets attributed.

If they mention one of our billboards, it picks that up too. After the call it creates a deal in HubSpot and adds notes and attribution points based on the conversation.

The media attention pays off. I can’t give a specific number, but it definitely got deals over the line.

That's smart automation right there.

Yeah. In sales calls we can run reports against all the “hard to track” stuff like the suit.

Some people might forget they saw it, but the brand visibility is there. Even though our initial thought these campaigns are more about branding than direct sales, people have mentioned it on calls.

Any numbers you can share?

I can’t share a specific number, but let’s just say this: if I knew the result would be this good, I would’ve bought every spot on the suit. I would’ve covered it entirely in Comp AI.

I love unhinged ideas. This is the one I passed on. I didn’t think it would work. My expectations were like, “Maybe we’ll get a video out of it.” And that was it.

But the aftermath was crazy. He was literally in the office speaking to the biggest morning TV show in Australia. We had to connect to an Australian VPN just to watch it live.

We got backlinks from Business Insider, which I’m excited about. Helps SEO and brand awareness. It exceeded my expectations. I've told others I feel like an idiot for not buying a spot. It was a cool idea.

Let’s talk about the parody account Henrick Johansson, the European VC who keeps blabbering about compliance. It’s so funny. How did this idea come about?

There’s this guy called Charlie. If you’ve ever seen the Chase Passive Income account…

Yes, I know Charlie. We’re actually homies and I interviewed him for Memelord Magazine.

Oh brilliant. So Charlie made a post on X saying, “Hey, I will make an account for a brand.” I saw it. I didn’t even tell my co-founders. I DM’d him like, “Let’s try it.”

He sent a Stripe link. I paid. I invited him to our Slack. We chatted about ideas for a couple of days. Everyone hates Europe, and I’m from Europe, so I find it funny. I agree with a lot of the jokes.

So the idea is unhinged but on-brand. A VC who is super slow and obsessed with compliance. It grew from there.

Charlie told me he’s done accounts for different brands but has never seen one blow up this fast. It’s now followed by Marc Andreessen, Vitalik Buterin, Palmer Luckey. The biggest accounts in tech now follow Henrick Johansson.

It got about 25 million impressions in the first month. Now it’s at 25k followers.

How did you decide the angle? It fits the product perfectly.

Charlie did most of it. We talked a bit. I said it needs to be somewhat related to compliance, and he ran with it.

A week later he said, “Here’s the account. Can you give him a Comp AI badge?” And that was it. Henrick Johansson was born.

He already had the profile picture and everything. He knows exactly how to hit the tone to get reactions. People love it. It went from zero to 4k followers in a week.

The funny thing is he didn’t even know I was European because we only chatted on Slack.

When the account blew up, I said, “You know I'm from the UK, right?” He laughed and said, “No way. You’re doing first-hand research into Henrick himself.”

It worked so well that we just doubled down on it.

A week ago, a new coworking space opened in New York. They invited founders to check out the space. We heard about it, so we sponsored the bar and we made everything Henrick Johansson-themed.

Me and my co-founders love Old Fashioneds, so instead of calling it an Old Fashioned, we called it a “Henrick Johansson” because he’s old-fashioned.

We want people to literally say, “Should we go for a Henrick Johansson after work?” and everyone knows what it means.

I couldn’t go because I was in SF, but the team did. They set up a banner with Henrick’s face. There were QR code menus themed around him.

Surprisingly, so many people recognized him from X. People we’ve never met. Folks from big tech companies. Everyone was asking about Henrick.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this happened in SF, but in New York? I didn’t expect anyone to know this random parody account. So cool.

It seems like there’s a theme here. You do one or two unhinged meme things, like the wedding suit or the Henrick Johansson account, then expand them into posts, memes, videos, offline events.

Yes. We see what works and capitalize on it.

If the Henrick account didn’t take off, we’d have left it. But once we saw it blowing up, we said, “Okay, we have to double down.”

Another idea I’m thinking about is to get billboards in SF with Henrick’s face in Comp AI green saying something like, “I Only Trust SOC2 reports from Comp AI.” Every bus, every billboard.

Like when you drive into the city, everyone will know Henrick Johansson because they saw him on X.

Many startups and marketers, especially those in boring or safe industries, maybe even SMBs, are scared of doing out-of-the-box meme stuff. What advice would you give them?

I would say it’s not that deep.

You're probably going to offend some people by making memes or funny stuff. Some people won’t buy your product because of your marketing style.

But you can’t please everyone.

A lot of people will love it. Most people won’t be offended. They’ll find it hilarious. People like to buy from brands they connect with.

If a sales prospect said, “I didn’t buy because of Henrick Johansson,” they probably wouldn’t have become a customer anyway.

We have tons of European customers. Not a single one has said, “Henrick Johansson is offensive to Europeans.” They love it.

I've had so many messages from people saying they love Henrick Johansson — and they’re customers.

We’re in a compliance space where trust is everything, and this proves our approach actually builds trust.

It works. People understand it. Tech founders get it. That’s our ICP.

So my advice is: go for it. Don’t be scared of shitposting or meme marketing. People will enjoy it.

People like brands that make them laugh, that interest them, and that connect with them.

I dream of memes

Sup memelords,

I just raised $3M and I don't sleep much these days.

But I never really did.

Even as a kid, I was up late nights grinding not being able to sleep.

In middle school, I’d stay up late learning graphic design. In high school, I turned those late nights into $50,000 selling stickers on the internet. In college, I’d stay up late nights working on my music blog and building shopify stores. Then I built Memelord with nothing but Red Bull and a dream so big I couldn’t fall asleep.

Insomnia is my competitive advantage.

Insomnia is the moat.

Insomnia makes billions.

I say this as a former Oura-ring-wearing sleep-nerd who literally wrote a weekly blog about wellness-tech. Some things are indeed worth losing sleep over. If you want to live your dreams during the day, you need to sacrifice them at night.

This post is not health advice. It’s probably closer to financial advice tbh, but it’s definitely not that either (talk to my lawyers). This post will go against everything that the sleep-obsessed Silicon Valley internet is telling you to do right now.

My beliefs are unusual and scientifically unhealthy, but I’m 28 and just raised $3M for a meme editor and live in a 2-floor penthouse in New York, so maybe there’s a method to my madness (key word: maybe). Or maybe I’m just a madman? Who knows?

The memelord’s 12 beliefs on sleep:

1. Do I feel better when I sleep 8+ hours? Yes, but the goal of my life is not to feel good all the time. Let’s get this out of the way. Obviously I feel better when I sleep 8+ hours, I have bigger ambitions than feeling good all the time. If I wanted to feel good all the time, I’d teach yoga (Fun fact: I literally have my yoga teaching license from my hippie college days when I was trying to feel good all the time). After trying to be happy all the time, I realized I’m much more fulfilled working on something important even through the pain rather than trying to feel good all the time. Suffering is the moat.

2. Sleep is like money to be spent. Scared money don’t make no money. Scared of a bad sleep score don’t make no money either. If you want unusually high returns, you need to take high risks and “spend more sleep” on the work leading to those returns. I raised $3M for memelord.com this summer. During week of meetings when $2M got signed and wired, I slept 3 hours/night. Do you think I gave a fuck about my sleep score? I just walked away with $3M in the bank for my business. Who the fuck cares about a sleep score???

   

3. I would never invest in a startup founder with a good sleep score. You want me as an investor and your employees to lose sleep over your company when you’re not losing sleep over your company????? A founder’s lack of sleep is the moat. Every founder I know with a solid sleep score is failing at growing their company because they value growing their sleep score more.

4. Building a startup is more often a byproduct of insomnia that insomnia a byproduct of building a startup. When you’re a naturally anxious, hardworking, curious, ambitious person, you sleep less than the average person, which leads you down internet rabbitholes, learning new skills, and building cool shit. You need to get to the next page. Your curiosity outweighs your desire to sleep. Then often unintentionally, those rabbitholes and late nights and reading weird shit and learning new skills lead you to build a business. Since building a business is stressful and you already don’t sleep much, you naturally stay up late grinding. I believe the people telling you to get a full night sleep usually don’t understand this obsessive curiosity and drive.

5. AI will make us sleep less, not more. People think you can just let AI do all your work and go to bed. But now the opportunity cost of sleep is higher than ever because you can do so much cooler stuff!

6. If you want to get rich, sell sleep products to tech nerds. Who are the most under=slept people on the planet? Tech nerds. Who are early adopters for new technology? Tech nerds. Who has disposable income? Tech nerds. The formula is simple. Wanna get rich? Sell sleep.

7. Oura Rings are helpful for 1 month max. Find out what you’re doing wrong then fix it. Or don’t. But either way shut up and stop complaining.

8. Phone doesn’t enter bedroom. I keep my phone in the other room on airplane mode. Nothing is that urgent. Maybe that will change when I have kids who are older and are out late nights, but right now, there is nothing that urgent. I go on airplane mode every night, journal, and read before bed.

9. If you can’t sleep because you’re so stressed out about work, you should just get back to work. No use lying in bed tossing and turning. Just grind and get to bed when you can. There's probably a reason you can't sleep, and it's because you know there's work to be done.

10. If you can’t sleep but you’re also too tired to work, then do something offline with your hands. Reading. Writing. Make art. I make collages when I can’t sleep. It’s fun and mindless. Sometimes I’ll flip a movie on. But no work. The keyboard class yearns for handywork.

11. “Sleep is a symptom of caffeine deprivation” - Palantir CTO Shyam Sankar. The hardest working people I know are hyper-caffeinated monkeys. 

12. Some things are indeed worth losing sleep over. “Don’t lose sleep over this” is a great expression because most things aren’t worth losing sleep over. But your business? Feeding your family? Protecting the country? Making great art? Making sure your employees get paychecks? Uh yeah that’s worth losing sleep over. And if that’s not worth it to you, then I don’t want to be anywhere near you. You just don’t care enough. I prefer to be around people who sacrifice their nighttime dreams to live them during the day.

Jovian: How did you start with No Context Memes?

Matt: I had another meme account called Weird Spotify Playlist (@SpotifyWeird) for about six months.

That one was growing pretty well, and then I saw someone post an AI-generated image—I can’t even remember what it was. This was back when you could barely make out what the picture or prompt was, which made it so much funnier. I saw it and thought, “I’ll try this out myself.”

So I made a few, posted them on this brand new account called @weirddalle, left them overnight, and woke up to 12,000 followers. From there, I just scrambled to make as many as I could. I got loads of submissions, and it grew to about 900,000 followers in two and a half weeks.

At that time, it was all weird DALL·E images—no general memes like it is now.

Did you have a goal for how many posts to make per day back then?

Not really. I was still working my old job, so it depended on what I was doing in the evenings. I’d say maybe 5 to 10 posts a day early on, and if I got a lot of submissions, sometimes up to 20.

Did you ever think about what time zone you should post in?

Not at first. I just posted whenever. But in the short term, it probably helps to optimize for time zones.

For example, if I posted at midnight US time, it might take 10 minutes to hit 100 likes. If I posted in the afternoon US time, it might take two minutes. So yeah, short term it matters, but long term I don’t think posting time makes that much difference.

When did @weirddalle start becoming more of a general meme page like it is now, the “No Context Memes”?

It happened when image generators got too good. It kind of took the fun out of it.

The whole point of the account was that the images looked like nothing they were supposed to be. I was always making memes anyway, so I thought, why not just turn it into a more general meme account?

Back in 2021 or 2022, growing meme accounts used to be so easy. It’s much harder now because there’s money in it, the algorithm changed, and everyone’s competing.

When you started posting more general memes, did your strategy change?

There were definitely a lot more posts per day just because there was more content available. I usually make 40–50 memes a day. I try to post every hour and schedule overnight posts too, so it’s pretty much around the clock.

What’s your curation process like? Where do you look for memes besides Memelord?

Anywhere, really. Instagram probably has the best content, though it’s hit or miss—you search for a while and sometimes find nothing.

Reddit’s easier because of the upvote system. You can just go to a subreddit and see what’s trending that day. Then there’s Pinterest, Telegram, Discord servers, random places like that.

How do you find these memes on Telegram and Discord?

I just searched for “memes,” found one server, and then found others cross-posting into each other’s servers. I kind of hop around and try to avoid the scary white supremacy or Nazi meme groups.

Do you make a lot of your own original memes?

Yeah, especially since I started working at Memelord. I’ve been making a lot more of my own stuff because it’s just easier now. I usually use whatever new templates were added recently.

So Weird Spotify Playlist and No Context Memes weren’t your first meme accounts, right? Tell me about the others.

The first one I ever made was when I was fourteen. It was a football meme page, those terrible “Troll Football or “Top 10 Respect Moments” kinds of memes. I ran that for a while.

It was all on Instagram. I stayed mostly on Instagram until 2021. I made another meme account that hit about 150,000 followers before it got banned in 2020. They gave it back for a day, then banned me again. It is what it is.

Then I started Weird Spotify Playlist in 2021, around when I got my first full-time job. That one grew to 600,000 followers, then got banned too. The account that’s on X now is the second one, and it’s back up to 600,000 followers again.

What’s the biggest difference between growing on X versus Instagram?

When I started No Context Memes, Twitter’s algorithm was heavily based on retweets. All you had to do was ask for retweets from bigger accounts to go viral. If someone with 100,000 followers retweeted you, 100,000 people saw the post.

Instagram was different. You had to rank on hashtags, hit the Explore page, and get good watch time. There were so many little factors, like YouTube or TikTok. Instagram kind of started that whole game.

Twitter back then was simpler. Now it’s harder because they made it more like Instagram.

Have brands ever reached out for sponsored posts?

Yeah, way too often. Unfortunately, most are crypto or OnlyFans deals, which I refuse. I don’t want people losing money on shitcoins.

It’s similar to what we see on Memelord. Crypto people even made a coin using our logo.

How much were they offering?

Around ten to fifteen thousand dollars for five to ten posts. I’ve done a few sponsored posts before, non-crypto ones of course. I’ve worked with some apps, but the number of legit, non-scammy ones is very few.

Jesus that’s a lot of money you turned down. What was the first legitimate company that reached out?

The first one I took was a movie promotion. They wanted me to put DALL·E prompts related to the film and link “Coming out in theaters next week.”

They never paid me though. I followed up for three years, even contacted business regulators, but nothing.

It was only a couple hundred bucks, but that was a lot for me then. Eventually I just gave up.

Oh, that really sucks.

How do you set your prices for sponsored posts?

I try to get as much information as possible before quoting. I’ll ask what product they want to promote, what the post would look like, if there’s an external link, or if it’s just tagging them on X. Then I decide if it’s something I agree with.

There’s a lot of shady stuff out there. I get asked some weird things.

What’s the shadiest request you’ve ever received?

It’s for a fetish website. It’s a website where you can sell pictures for a specific fetish, but in reality no one would actually buy them.

The platform made money by getting people to sell photos to no one. The “customers” were actually the sellers. That was the weirdest request.

Are you running any other meme pages now?

Yeah, I run one with a friend. He has an idea page, and we’re both into country folk music. We post memes and edits around that. It’s called Country Music Goes Hard. It’s doing pretty well, around 85,000 followers since March.

It’s mostly meme videos here. Do you find video memes harder to make?

It was before, but it’s easier now with Memelord.

I actually think video memes are funnier than static ones. I don’t know if that’s new or if it’s always been like that. There’s a new movie every week that people clip front to back and turn into memes. It’s hilarious. Maybe it started with Breaking Bad or American Psycho.

Before we have Memelord video library, where did you find meme videos?

Usually TikTok or Instagram. I’d see a meme using a template, then scour the internet trying to find a clean version to crop. It usually took me a long time. Sometimes I just gave up.

With Memelord, if a video goes viral, it’s there instantly. Makes my life easier.

That must have been super time consuming before.

Yeah, especially on TikTok where quality is often low and you can never find the original that looked great.

Are you currently running other personal meme accounts on X?

Yeah, you know me, I’m always creating new ones. I’m still running Weird Spotify Playlist. Strange Duolingo Sentences was big for a while, but content was limited, only whenever Duolingo added something stupid.

I used to run Technically the Truth, which was memes that were kind of dumb but technically true. One of our biggest posts got two million likes. It was someone asking for help identifying a bird, and someone replied, “That’s a bird.”

Right now my favorite is @kitchencels, based on the r/kitchencels subreddit. I’ve been running it for about a month. It’s hilarious.

How do you come up with all these ideas for new accounts?

Whenever I see something interesting, I think, “Can I turn this into a meme account?” That’s pretty much it. I also love analytics.

Watching the numbers go up is weirdly fun for me. Because I’m a mad.

Okay that’s interesting. How do you think about analytics beyond follower count?

I look at all the stats. People on Twitter now obsess over engagement because that’s what gets you paid. But I think the more interesting metric is bookmarks.

Bookmarks are huge. If a post gets lots of bookmarks, it gets shown to more people. It means people want to come back to it. That’s when I know I should post more of that kind of content.

Recently, Fortnite memes have been blowing up. Every post about the new season gets thousands of bookmarks.

Can you give an example of how you use that data?

On X, if something gets a lot of replies, I’ll post more of that, but replies are often negative. That’s why rage bait works so well. More outrage means more money.

But I’d rather post things people enjoy. If you keep posting what people like, you get followers and kind messages, not angry ones.

What kind of memes that don’t get massive engagement but get tons of bookmarks?

Yeah, usually niche ones. I like posting about wrestling or games like Madden and Fortnite. Those always get bookmarked. When you connect with a niche audience, you get real support. You get bookmarks, followers, and nice DMs.

My favorite was last year, a WWE meme about Cody Rhodes. It kicked off the whole #WeWantCody movement. I posted so many Cody memes and made a bunch of friends in the wrestling space through that.

That’s what most big pages miss. They post rage bait or fake stuff, but niche memes build real communities. You might get fewer likes, but you gain higher-quality followers.

If someone wanted to start a meme account from scratch, what advice would you give?

I would say pick a niche to begin with. I only got millions of followers for No Context Memes because I already had followers from the weird DALL-E niche.

All my other pages, like @spotifyweird, @kitchencels, and @countrymusicgoes hard, are all niche.

Find something you love, see what others in that space are doing, and figure out how you can do it better.

If someone is posting Simpsons Funny Moments, don’t post the same twenty clips everyone else does. Find moments people have forgotten about.

Find your niche, study it, and figure out how to stand out.

I remembered the first time I learned what “memes” are.

I was a college freshman just arriving in Taiwan, and I found this website called 9GAG.

You older memelords are probably familiar with it (true story, I asked Jason and he was only remotely familiar with 9GAG).

That’s where I learned what memes and meme templates actually are. The classic memes like “Overly Attached Girlfriend”, “Good Guy Greg”, or “Philosoraptor.”

I never thought that memes would be the cultural driving force like it is now.

I still sing the “Bed Intruder” song every now and then

The ability to make memes are now 100x more valuable than in 2010.

We at memelord.com talk about meme marketing. All the time. Because we believe in making funny stuff and entertaining marketing.

But I noticed it seems like we rarely talk about how to start meme-ing.

The short version is honestly just start posting, but I want to break it down a little more for those who are are still not sure about memes.

First things first: if your major concern is you’re afraid of “not being funny”, you don’t have to worry.

The meme templates already tell you to be funny. Think about it like a joke format that you can use at any time, but it’s more flexible and it’s visual.

Now let’s get deeper into the meme mines.

It’s all about the inside jokes

The business principle of “know your customers” also apply to making memes.

If you don’t know how users perceive your product, you won’t be able to make memes that resonate.

Think about memes as the inside jokes between you and your potential customers. You can only make them laugh if both of you are in the joke.

This is how companies like Supabase got popular with memes: they dropped meme templates paired with things that non-developers wouldn’t necessarily understand.

I call it the Meme Angles.

To get your Meme Angles, you have to:

• Know your audience

• Know their pain points

• Articulate the pain points and problems they complain about

Our friend and power user 1Up is another company who’s doing this really well. They have a meme library just them working on different Meme Angles and pain of working in sales.

Making memes is also a test for yourself.

How well do you actually understand your customers? How good is your current product positioning and messaging? Are we even marketing to the right audience?

If your memes don’t hit, then it’s possible it doesn’t resonate well because they can’t relate to it. That’s when you need to get back to the drawing board.

Solidify your Meme Angles, you can insert your product into it.

If you’re worried about your caption or copy is not funny, understanding your target audience will solve this worry. Because when you know their problems, you can basically speak in their voice.

But don’t be too sales-y all the time. The idea of memes are to make people laugh, then sell them.

Think like an entertainer first, sales second.

Make them laugh, and make them pay.

Timing is everything

Just like comedy. Timing is everything in memes.

It applies to every facet of meme-ing.ou have to be aware of your customers’s current pain points. You have to know what’s the latest meme templates and format. You have to get int the conversation at the right time.

You have to know what The Current Thing is, and strike the iron when it’s hot.

Let me give you an example. Let’s say you’re making a meme about the marketing team getting viral with memes.

It’s the same joke, but if you post the first one, you’ll be seen as a boomer (apologies in advance to our boomer subscribers). Or as the kids say, you have “negative aura”

On his book Memes Make Millions, Jason wrote about why you should be on top of The Current Thing:

The problem is, staying on the current thing is HARD.

MORE COWBELL MEMES

HEY I’M WALKEN HERE

Saturday Night Live is 50 years old. It’s one of the most impactful comedy show in America. Most Americans reading this never knew a life without SNL.

Yet, their hit rate is actually not that high.

Since 1975, SNL put out, on average, 170-200 new sketches per year, not including recurring characters. That’s close to 10,000 sketches in total.

How many of them do you remember?

If they can get to 20-30 memorable sketches per year, that’s a good percentage for SNL.

Every once in a while, some of them will become part of a pop culture vernaculars, such as More Cowbell, Dick In a Box, or even break through the barrier to become Wayne’s World or Blues Brothers.

If we’re looking purely at hit rate, it’s really low.

But it doesn’t mean they suck. They’ve been around for 50 years.

All of the less impressive sketches they churn out are part of building and compounding their legacy as the comedy sketch show in America.

Conan O’Brien always says “I work in a volume business” — the more body of work you ship, the more shots on goal you have.

It’s the same with memes. It’s a volume business.

The more memes you posted, the more chance you’ll have to make your target audience laugh.

The more shitposts you published, the faster you can figure out what works and double down on it.

You might post some duds here and there, but who hasn’t?

Even the great Al Pacino has his rock bottom moments. Remember the movie Jack and Jill?

Every memes and entertainment you ship to your audience will compound, and you’ll keep getting better at it. It’s just how it is. You can just do things.

Being funny and entertaining works

Quiz time: what do these brands have in common?

• Wendy’s (fast food)

• Juventus FC (Italian soccer/fútbol club)

• SparkNotes (study guide for lazy-ass students)

• Domino’s Pizza (fast food but worse)

Yeah yeah, you probably already guessed it: “they all use memes and humor for marketing!”

You’re not wrong. These are brands that actively use memes and humor to promote their products.

I interviewed the memelord behind Morning Brew’s social Liam Fennessy, and he was fascinated by how Juventus — a billion-dollar sports brand — is “putting brainrot on the timeline.”

But here’s another thing they have in common:

They’re old as fuck.

If you’re thinking “1999 ain’t old” remember that kids born in 1999 are probably a parent of 3 kids right now.

Darwin said, “It’s not the strongest species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the most responsive to change.”

I think this also applies to brand marketing.

The brands I mentioned above have survived until the year of our Lord 2025 because they keep adapting their marketing strategies to the modern era. That’s how they maintain their status in the market.
