Never heard of the C.O.D.E Framework before? Don’t worry—this is not some dry corporate acronym you’ll forget in two seconds. It’s a bold, intentional approach I use with my clients to help them finally get seen, supported, and seriously paid for the value they bring to the table—without selling their soul to hustle culture.

In simple terms, C.O.D.E stands for:

• Clarity – Get crystal clear on your career desires. What do you want next—and why does it matter to you, not just your company?

• Own It – Know the value you bring. This is your moment to confidently say things like, “I’ve successfully managed similar projects and consistently delivered results ahead of schedule.”

• Decide to Be Heard – It’s not just about knowing your worth—it’s about giving yourself permission to take up space. Advocate for yourself, ask for the raise, pitch the promotion. Closed mouths don’t get big checks.

• Elevate My Energy – Show up as the version of you who already has what you want. That next-level role? That salary? Embody it now.

Raises and promotions go to those who lead themselves first—who confidently align, advocate, and act like a damn leader, no matter their current title.

How I Started Using C.O.D.E to Get Big Career Wins

Corporate isn’t for everyone—I won’t sugarcoat that. It’s not for the weak, chile. But here’s the truth: it’s been good to me. It’s given me the experience, skills, network, and money to do what I love today. And that’s why I’m all about helping you make corporate work for you, on your terms.

If you’ve ever doubted whether you’re qualified enough, hesitated to negotiate your salary, or felt like you had to grind yourself into burnout just to get ahead—this one’s for you.

Too many ambitious women hold themselves back because of outdated, toxic myths that keep them stuck, underpaid, and overworked. And trust me—I see this all the time.

But it’s time to break free.

And as the saying goes: “Make that money, don’t let the money make you.” #namethatmovie

And to do that? You need to drop these myths, own your worth, and step into your unapologetic corporate glow-up.

So, let’s talk about these myths.

Corporate Career Myth #1: “I have to accept the first salary offer, or they might rescind the job.”

Ahhh, the fear of negotiating. So many women hesitate to counter a salary offer because they’re afraid they’ll seem greedy or—even worse—lose the job offer altogether.

But let’s set the record straight: Companies expect you to negotiate.

💡 Reality check: Recruiters almost always have more budget than what they initially offer. The first number they give you? It’s rarely the best they can do. And if they’re excited about hiring you, they’re not going to yank the offer just because you asked for more.

And even if you do ask for more than the budget, trust me—there’s always room to negotiate. I once recruited a Clinical Programmer $10K over budget because I proved the demand was high, the supply was low, and the candidate was stellar. Yes, it took some back-and-forth and higher-level approvals, but guess what? We got it done.

So why do so many women still believe this myth? Because we’ve been taught to be grateful for whatever we’re offered instead of confidently advocating for our worth.

🔥 The truth: Negotiating isn’t risky—not negotiating is. Skipping salary negotiations can cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars over your career. So do your research, know your market value, and make the ask.

Corporate Career Myth #2: “The only way to grow in my career is to work longer and harder.”

Let’s be real—overworking has been glorified for way too long.

The hustle culture narrative says that if you’re not working overtime, checking emails at midnight, or sacrificing your personal life, you must not really want success.

But NO.

Hard work is important, but working smarter and intentionally—not longer—is the real key to success.

Why do people still believe this? Because we’ve been conditioned to equate exhaustion with ambition.

And honestly? You can thank generational conditioning for that. As a Latina, my mom called me lazy for taking a nap once—and I never napped again until I had kids. Then I threw all of that out the window.

🔥 The truth: Burnout doesn’t get you ahead—it keeps you stuck. You don’t win by running yourself into the ground. You win by playing the game strategically. The people who rise to leadership aren’t just working hard—they’re working smart, making power moves, and protecting their energy.

Career growth isn’t about grinding yourself into the ground. It’s about building relationships, advocating for yourself, and mastering your time like a leader. Boundaries don’t make you less ambitious. They make you unstoppable.

Corporate Career Myth #3: “I need another degree or certification before I can advance.”

Oof. This one hits hard—because we’ve been taught that more credentials = more success. And truthfully? Some industries, like Clinical Research, are strict about degree requirements.

But here’s the truth: More degrees don’t guarantee more opportunities. More action (and an A1 network) does.

I can’t tell you how many smart, capable women I’ve seen delay applying for promotions or pivoting into new roles because they think they need another degree or certification to be taken seriously.

Meanwhile? Less-qualified (but more confident and connected) candidates are landing those same roles.

And if I look at your resume and I see 4 degrees, 35 certifications, 15 courses, but only 5 years of experience… Ma’am??

I’m going to assume you suffer from severe imposter syndrome.

Don’t let your fear of rejection trick you into overcompensating. You don’t need to prove yourself with a laundry list of credentials—you just need to own your worth.

Why do people still believe this? Because we’ve been conditioned to think credentials = competence. And sure, in some fields (medicine, law, engineering, clinical research), extra education is necessary.

But in most corporate careers? Your experience, skills, and confidence and network will get you further than another piece of paper ever will (and this is coming from an M.S. holder).

🔥 The truth: Instead of spending thousands on another degree, start building the kind of experience and network that actually gets you hired. Step into rooms with decision-makers. Put yourself in conversations where opportunities happen. Confidence and strategy will take you further than another certification ever will.

Why These Myths Are Holding You Back

Believing these myths can keep you stuck in a cycle of overworking, under-earning, and second-guessing yourself.

But here’s what I know for sure: You don’t need more credentials. You don’t need to accept the first offer. And you don’t need to work yourself to the bone.

You need confidence, strategy, and the right support to take bold action. Because if you don’t step up and claim what you deserve? Someone else will.

But, despite all of this, you’re still not getting the job offers you deserve–you’re not even landing interviews. 

How does that make you feel? Frustrated? 

Like you’re stuck in a never-ending cycle of rejection? 

Like you should just settle for any kind of job that can keep you out of foreclosure or eviction and forget about career fulfillment?

Throughout my 13+ years working in HR and recruiting, I’ve seen firsthand why talented women struggle to land high-value jobs, and in this job market the struggles have dramatically increased.  It usually comes down to one (or more) of these five reasons. Understanding what’s holding you back is the first step to making the necessary shifts to get hired.

Reason #1: You’re Applying to Jobs Without a Clear ROI Strategy

You’ve probably heard the saying, "Work smarter, not harder." That applies to job searching too! If you’re sending out hundreds of applications with no real game plan, you’re wasting time and energy.

Right now, women are voicing their frustrations over “ghost jobs”—postings that aren’t actually active—or getting lost in automated applicant tracking systems (ATS).

Do yourself a favor and create a targeted job search strategy with metrics that you will tell you how the strategy is performing.  

The first thing you want to do is create a spreadsheet where you can track all the jobs you apply to. 

Next, you want to set up your metrics.

Focus on roles that align with your skills, experience, and career goals.

Reason #2: You’re Being Too Passive When You Apply

If you’re just submitting applications and waiting for a response, you’re playing defense instead of offense. Women in particular tend to hesitate when it comes to directly reaching out after applying.

The fix? Be proactive. 

• Message the recruiter immediately after submitting your application

• Find the hiring manager on LinkedIn and send a connection request

• Follow up after a week if you haven’t heard back

As a recruiter, I welcomed candidates who took the initiative to reach out—saving me from sifting through hundreds of applications and making my job easier by putting themselves on my radar. This small shift can take you from ignored to noticed in a sea of applicants.

Reason #3: You’re Not Networking Effectively

If you’re relying solely on job applications, you’re missing out on one of the most powerful tools in job searching: networking.

Personally, my last four jobs came through referrals—people in my network advocating for me in rooms I wasn’t even in, but I understand why some don’t care for it. Women, in particular, report feeling uncomfortable “asking for help” or leveraging their networks, which can hold them back from getting warm introductions to hiring managers.

How to fix it:

• Remove the cringe from networking by shifting your mindset—you're not begging for an opportunity, you're creating a mutual exchange. Do your research on the person to determine how you can offer value, or simply ask, 'How can I support you?'

• Join professional groups and attend networking events to expand your connections.

• Use LinkedIn strategically—comment on industry posts, send personalized connection requests, and engage in relevant conversations.

Remember, networking isn’t about asking for favors—it’s about building relationships and positioning yourself for opportunities.

Reason #4: You’re Not Positioning Yourself as THE Solution

Let’s be real—if you’re not confident in communicating your value, how will anyone else be? And if your job search mindset is “I just need a job,” you’re thinking about it the wrong way.

Companies don’t hire people just to fill seats. They hire problem solvers. Right now, many women feel overlooked in favor of male candidates with the same qualifications. The key to standing out? Clearly communicate your value.

Many women feel uncomfortable “bragging” about their achievements, but hiring is competitive. If you’re underselling yourself, you’re making it easy to be overlooked.

Shift your messaging to:

• The problems you solve

• How your skills create measurable impact

• Why YOU are the best investment for their team

How?

• Quantify your achievements—don’t just list responsibilities, show results

• Craft powerful interview stories using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result)

• Own your expertise—confidence isn’t arrogance, it’s positioning yourself as the only choice

Once you frame yourself as the solution to their needs, you’ll notice a shift in how recruiters respond. Show them why they can’t afford NOT to hire you.

Today, a man called me a grifter.

Why?

Because I said I’m a proud capitalist. Because I believe in making money. Because I refuse to apologize for wanting financial freedom, security, and abundance.

Once upon a time, a comment like that would’ve sent me spiraling. I would’ve questioned myself. “Am I being greedy? Should I make myself smaller? Should I just be grateful for what I have?”

Not anymore.

Money Is Not the Enemy—But Your Beliefs Might Be.

Because here’s the truth: Money is not the enemy. Capitalism is not inherently evil.

And asking for your worth? That’s not grifting—it’s self-respect.

But so many people—especially women—have been conditioned to feel ashamed of making money.

We’ve been told that wanting more is selfish, that charging for our expertise is exploitative, and that financial success somehow makes us less spiritual, less ethical, less good.

And I call BS on all of it.

Monopolizing Wealth vs. Building Wealth—Know the Difference.

Let me be clear: I’m not talking about exploitation. I’m talking about receiving in direct proportion to the value you bring.

Monopolizing with the intent to dominate the market? Exploiting workers to squeeze every last drop of profit? Underpaying people while hoarding wealth at the top? 

THAT is evil. That is greed. That is capitalism at its worst.

But that’s not you. That’s not me.

That’s not the vast majority of people who simply want to build wealth, create opportunities, and get paid fairly for the value they bring.

Breaking Free From These Beliefs

If you feel a little uncomfortable reading this, take a second and ask yourself:
✨ What limiting beliefs do I have around money?
✨ Who taught me that earning more is wrong?
✨ How is this belief keeping me stuck?

Now, grab your journal and make two lists:

List #1: Every time you held yourself back financially because you thought asking for more was “wrong” or “greedy.”

List #2: What you will do differently if (when) these situations happen again.

Then? Hold yourself accountable. Stick to what you said you’d do.

Drop the Guilt. Own Your Worth. Get Paid.

Money is a tool. That’s it. It amplifies who you are. If you’re generous, you’ll be generous with money. If you’re kind, you’ll use money to do good.

But if you’re broke, struggling, and resentful? You can’t help anyone—not even yourself.

So, no—I won’t apologize for making money. And neither should you.

Your skills, your expertise, your energy? They are valuable. And anyone who shames you for charging what you’re worth is simply projecting their own scarcity mindset.

So here’s your permission slip:

The people who get it, get it.

And the ones who don’t? LET. THEM. STAY. MAD.

How I Used Job Search Metrics to Increase My Salary by $35K

You might assume that, with my HR and Recruiting background, landing jobs has always been easy for me. Spoiler: It wasn’t.

A few years ago, I was unemployed due to COVID, broke as hell, and had ZERO confidence in my ability to land a new role. I second-guessed myself at every turn. Then, in the summer of 2020, I filed for divorce, and something shifted. It was like a fire got lit under me.

I realized that I had been approaching my job search all wrong, so I started tracking my progress with real data. And let me tell you—it changed EVERYTHING. Here’s what happened:

• I celebrated small wins—whenever I felt down about rejections, I looked at my conversion rates and celebrated when my numbers improved.

• I tweaked my strategy in real time—when my prescreen-to-interview rate dipped, I started asking recruiters better questions at the end of calls to get insight into potential feedback.

• I landed multiple offers at once—which gave me leverage to negotiate my butt off and walk away with a $35K salary increase.

5 Steps to Start Tracking Your Job Search Performance

Here’s how to track and optimize your job search like a pro:

1. Establish Key Job Search Metrics (With Benchmarks!)

Before making changes, establish baseline metrics to understand your starting point. Here are strong conversion rate benchmarks to aim for:

• Applications Sent → Prescreens Received: ~10-20%

• Prescreens → Interviews Scheduled: ~30-50%

• Interviews → Final Round Interviews: ~30-50%

• Final Rounds → Offers Received: ~20-30%

If your numbers are falling below these ranges, that’s your signal to adjust your strategy!

2. Set Up a Simple Job Search Tracker

Use an Excel sheet, Google Sheet, or Notion board. Include columns for:

• Job title

• Company

• Date applied

• Method (LinkedIn, company site, recruiter outreach)

• Prescreen date

• Interview dates

• Final round outcome

3. Identify Your Bottlenecks

After 2-4 weeks, analyze your data:

• Not getting prescreens? Update your resume/LinkedIn and reach out to recruiters directly. Here are some scripts you can use.

• Getting prescreens but no interviews? Refine your elevator pitch & screening answers.

• Interviewing but not getting offers? Work on your STAR-method storytelling.

4. Be Intentional with Applications

Instead of mass-applying, focus on high-quality applications where you tailor your resume. Quality > Quantity. Your emotions might say, “I just need to apply more!” but if you’re applying 100+ times with no interviews, your strategy needs to change - don’t ignore the data!

5. Get Feedback & Adjust

Ask recruiters for feedback when possible. Invest in a LinkedIn/resume audit or mock interviews if needed!

I did everything “right.” I climbed, I hustled, I earned the title… and yet, I still felt empty.

A Title I Thought Would Change Everything

Let me set the scene: It’s a few years ago, and I’ve just landed what I thought was my dream role—a DEI Program Manager at a pharmaceutical manufacturing company—a major step up in title and salary. This was supposed to be it, the moment I had been working toward for years.

I wasn’t ready for the realization that followed: The title didn’t make me feel more fulfilled. It didn’t bring the happiness I thought it would.

Instead, I felt more pressure, more stress, and more disconnected from what actually lit me up inside. I was already looking for the next best thing.

Because this was one of my biggest career milestones at the time, I had a lot to prove. But deep down, I wasn’t proving anything to myself.

Little did I know that I would be getting laid off in March 2024. Then I went from feeling unfulfilled in my “dream” role to feeling like I lost my status in society. 

Spoiler alert: That was the moment I realized climbing the corporate ladder for the sake of climbing wasn’t the answer.

3 Reasons I Failed at Finding Happiness in Corporate Climbing

When you look at my experience, you might think the reason I felt unfulfilled was due to external factors—maybe the company culture, my workload, or my boss. But in reality, there were three key reasons why the corporate treadmill wasn’t serving me.

1. I Was Measuring Success by Someone Else’s Standards

Growing up, I was taught that success meant earning 6 figures and a respectable title. So naturally, I chased that vision. The problem? I realized, after becoming a mother, that it wasn’t my vision.

I never paused to ask: What do I actually want? What are my non-negotiables when it comes to my career? How do I define success in my career right now? What do I want to model for my children in terms of work-life balance?

The Solution: Instead of blindly chasing the next promotion, I started defining success for myself—based on what I valued, not what society expected. That shift changed everything.

Unfortunately (for my company), that meant setting boundaries at work. No more working past 5:00pm. No more looking at work emails on my phone. Communicating my availability transparently—without guilt. 

If you’re feeling stuck on the corporate treadmill, ask yourself: Am I climbing for me, or for someone else’s approval, validation, or love?

2. I Confused Busy-ness with Progress

Corporate culture loves a good hustle story. I used to think that if I just worked harder and longer than everyone else, I’d eventually “make it.” I was the first person in the office and the last one out.

But here’s the truth: Being busy isn’t the same as making progress toward a fulfilling career. Earlier in my career I got passed up on promotions for people that were more connected that I was. They didn't work as much as I did, but they prioritized building relationships with decision-makers.

The Solution: I learned to work smarter, not harder. That meant prioritizing impact over effort, setting boundaries, and focusing on the things that actually moved me forward—personally and professionally. I spend more time building relationships with people nowadays.

If you’re overworking yourself in the hopes of getting ahead, it might be time to rethink your strategy.

3. I Didn’t Heal My Childhood Wounds

For years, I was chasing success to seek love, validation, and approval. Every milestone I hit, I thought, This will finally prove I’m enough. But no title, salary bump, or LinkedIn announcement could fill that void.

Growing up, I only heard from my mother when I was being reprimanded for something I’d done wrong. Praise for doing something right was rare. So, I sought achievement, constantly striving for perfection, thinking that if I could just get it all right, I would finally hear the words, Great job. But that moment never came.

Looking back, my drive wasn’t always rooted in ambition—it was rooted in an unmet need from my past. And until I addressed that, no amount of success could ever feel like enough.

The Solution: Changing my mindset and doing the inner work was the thing that led to true success—one that wasn’t tied to external validation. When I finally stopped letting my past dictate my career decisions, everything shifted. I started choosing roles that aligned with my strengths and values, rather than chasing titles for approval. That’s when my career (and my confidence) took off.

If your career achievements never feel like enough, it might be time to look inward.

Stepping Off the Corporate Ladder With Confidence

I wish I could say that after this realization, I never struggled with recognizing my worth again. But that would be a lie—because breaking free from old conditioning takes time.

However, once I stopped chasing empty milestones and started prioritizing work that aligned with my values, I never felt stuck again.

So you’ve just been laid off… now what?

You’re probably feeling a mix of emotions—shock, sadness, maybe even relief. Layoffs can feel like a monumental setback, but they can also be the perfect reset button. The key is knowing how to navigate the next steps effectively so you come out stronger, more confident, and ready to move forward.

Should you take a day to process and recover? Should you jump into job applications? Or should you map out a game plan first?

In today’s post, I’m going to walk you through the 8 most important steps to take after a layoff to turn what feels like a roadblock into a springboard for your next opportunity. 

Let's get started.

Step #1: Give Yourself Space

First things first: Pause. You just went through something major, and pretending it’s no big deal—or panicking—won’t help.

The best way to do this is:

• Journal about your experience and emotions.

• Talk to someone you trust.

• Ground yourself with activities like yoga, a walk in nature, or even a night of binge-watching your favorite comfort show (hello, Shameless).

Many people dive straight into job searching—but that’s a mistake. 

Why?

Because it often leads to burnout, rushed decisions, and missed opportunities for clarity!

Instead, give yourself the space to grieve, reflect, and regroup. A brief pause—just 3–7 days if you can swing it—can help you regain confidence, refresh your energy, and realign your focus. It’s during this pause that you can reflect on what truly matters in your next role. Is it better work-life balance? Aligning with your passions? Long-term career growth? Taking this time ensures you’re pursuing opportunities that genuinely fit your values, strengths, and goals—rather than defaulting to the first thing that comes your way.

For me, that reflection time was a game-changer. When I was laid off in March 2024, I decided to take the summer off to spend time with my kids. That choice, made with intention, brought alignment and peace in what could have been a chaotic time.

Pause, breathe, and trust that taking a moment to reset is the best first step forward.

Step #2: Carefully Review Your HR Package

Average corporate professionals skim their severance package and don’t follow up with resources that may have been included in the documents. Smart women? They dig into the details, ask the right questions, and use this information to create a financial plan that sets them up for success.

Here’s the thing: understanding your HR package isn’t just paperwork. It’s the foundation for your next steps. When you approach it thoughtfully, you’ll gain clarity, avoid unnecessary stress, and even uncover benefits or opportunities you might have missed.

Here are some ways to approach it:

• Read the fine print of your severance package. Look for details like payout terms (like deadlines to return signed documents), unused vacation pay, and any non-compete clauses. If something seems unclear, don’t hesitate to ask HR for clarification or consult an attorney for peace of mind.

• Understand your COBRA benefits. Review your health insurance options and decide if continuing your current coverage or exploring alternatives (like Healthcare Marketplace plans) is the best fit for your budget and needs.

• Don’t overlook career transition or support resources. Many companies offer outplacement services, which can include resume writing assistance, career coaching, or access to exclusive job boards. Some also provide Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) that offer counseling and emotional support to help you navigate this challenging time.

For example: When I was laid off in March 2024, I realized my severance package included career coaching services as well as EAP support—but only after I read through the details carefully. That perk gave me access to valuable resources I wouldn’t have otherwise considered.

If you feel overwhelmed by all the paperwork or don’t know where to start, break it down into smaller, manageable steps. The key is to tackle one document or section at a time rather than trying to process everything all at once. This way, you’ll feel more in control and confident in your decisions without getting stuck in analysis paralysis.

Step #3: Apply for Unemployment and Plan Your Finances

Getting your finances in order is one of the most crucial steps to take after experiencing a layoff. 

Taking the time to apply for unemployment benefits and organize your financial situation can provide immediate relief and a clearer path forward.  Knowing where you stand financially helps you make informed decisions about your next steps—whether it’s budgeting for essentials, exploring new opportunities, or taking time to upskill. 

So, how do you apply for unemployment and plan your finances?

Here’s a simple roadmap:

• Apply for Unemployment Benefits. Visit your state’s unemployment office website and file your claim as soon as possible. Make sure you have the necessary documents handy, like your previous employer’s details, your last pay stub, and your Social Security number. These benefits can act as a financial safety net while you navigate this transition.

• Audit Your Expenses. Review your current spending habits and identify areas where you can cut back. Prioritize essentials like rent, utilities, and groceries. Pause or cancel non-essential subscriptions for now.

• Explore Your Financial Options. Research short-term health insurance alternatives if COBRA feels too expensive. Check if you’re eligible for any state or local assistance programs to further ease the burden.

For example: When I was laid off, I made a spreadsheet to track my severance, savings, and unemployment benefits. This gave me a clear picture of how long my funds would last and helped me prioritize spending. That clarity was a game-changer in reducing my stress during the transition.

Step #4: Get Clear on Your Career Goals

If you want to land a role that excites and fulfills you, you need to define what you truly want in your next career move. But you also need to be intentional about how you approach this process so you don’t fall into the trap of chasing shiny job titles or settling for the first offer that comes along. Specifically, you’ll want to take the time to reflect on what truly matters to you and create a clear roadmap for the type of role, company, and work-life balance you’re aiming for.

Here’s how to do it the right way:

• Clarify Your Priorities. Ask yourself: What’s non-negotiable for me? Is it remote work, opportunities for growth, better pay, or a healthier work environment? List these out to create a crystal-clear picture of what you’re looking for in your next role.

• Evaluate Your Strengths. What makes you stand out? Reflect on your unique skills, accomplishments, and experiences. Think about how you can leverage these in a way that adds value to your next role while helping you thrive professionally.

• Define Your Ideal Work Environment. Think beyond the job description. Consider company culture, leadership styles, and team dynamics that align with your personal and professional values. Ask yourself what kind of workplace will make you feel energized and supported.

To find examples of great work environments, search for “Best Places to Work for Women or Parents” or “Remote-First Companies with Flexible Work Schedules”, for example.  Focus on organizations that offer work-life balance, professional development opportunities, and inclusive cultures.

So set aside 60 minutes to focus on these updates:

• Tailor Your Resume for Your Ideal Role. Go beyond listing job duties. Instead, highlight your achievements with measurable results. Use bullet points like, “Increased client satisfaction by 25% through improved project management processes.” Targeting a different career path? Then read 5 Simple Steps to Stand Out and Land Your Dream Role Faster When Switching Careers
  

• Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile for Visibility. Update your headline to showcase your expertise and what you’re looking for (e.g., “Experienced Marketing Manager | Specializing in Digital Strategy & Campaign Optimization”). Use the "About" section to tell a compelling story about your career, emphasizing your values and key accomplishments.

• Add Recent Accomplishments. If you’ve completed certifications, led a major project, or developed a key skill, make sure it’s reflected on both platforms. This demonstrates growth and keeps your profile current.

Another great way to land your next role faster is by activating your network. Your connections are a powerful resource for uncovering opportunities that might not even be posted online.

Just start by reaching out to your inner circle—former colleagues, mentors, and even friends who might have insights into your industry. Share what you’re looking for and ask if they can keep an eye out for opportunities or make introductions. Then, expand to your extended network. Join professional groups on LinkedIn or attend industry-specific events (both virtual and in-person). This is a great way to meet new people who might have leads or advice.

Start with your inner circle, then go after your extended circle and finally, focus on making new connections

Pro Tip: The key with this step is to be clear and concise about what you’re looking for. Don’t just send vague messages like, “I’m looking for a job—know anything?” Instead, share specifics:

• Mention the roles or industries you’re targeting.

• Highlight your key skills or accomplishments.

• Keep it professional but warm to strengthen your relationships.

For example:
“Hi [Name], I hope you’re doing well! I wanted to let you know I’m currently exploring opportunities in marketing analytics, specifically in industries like e-commerce or tech. If you know of any openings or could connect me with someone in this space, I’d be so grateful. Thanks so much!”

Don't forget to follow up! Relationships aren’t one-and-done. A quick thank-you message or a note about how their advice helped goes a long way in keeping the connection strong.

Step #7: Create a Job Search Routine

Don’t forget, there’s more than one way to approach your job search effectively. Switching up your routine is a smart (and practical!) way to stay motivated, avoid burnout, and ensure you’re covering all your bases.

For example, you could set aside two hours each morning to research job postings and submit tailored applications. This focused time ensures you’re applying to roles that genuinely align with your career goals.

But that’s just one idea! You can also:

• Network on LinkedIn in the afternoon. Spend 30 minutes sending connection requests, engaging with posts in your field, or reaching out to former colleagues. Networking is one of the most effective ways to uncover hidden opportunities.

• Block time for skill-building. Dedicate an hour a few times a week to enhance your skills through online courses or certifications. This keeps your resume fresh and demonstrates your commitment to growth.

• Set follow-up reminders. Keep track of where you’ve applied and schedule time to follow up on applications or networking conversations. Following up shows initiative and keeps you top of mind for hiring managers.

You have many options, so mix them up to keep your routine both productive and engaging. By diversifying your approach, you’ll avoid the monotony of job searching and ensure you’re giving yourself the best chance to land a role that truly fits.

Step #8: Polish Your Skills

This activity is one of the most overlooked, but also one of the most important (which is why I saved it for last). If you don’t work on strengthening and updating your skills, how will you stay competitive in today’s job market?

If things are feeling shaky in your company, here’s a pro tip: check if your employer has filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice. Under U.S. law, companies with 100+ employees are required to file these notices if they’re planning mass layoffs. These filings are public, which means you can search your state’s Department of Labor website to see if your company is on the list.

Here’s an example: New Jersey’s WARN filings page. Even if your company isn’t listed, don’t wait for external signs—take charge of your future now.

#1. Keep Your Resume Ready to Go

This one seems like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people neglect their resume until they’re already in a tough spot. Don’t wait—start by documenting your most recent wins: big projects, promotions, and those quantifiable results that show your value.

Don’t be caught off guard. A polished resume ensures you can jump on opportunities quickly, without scrambling to remember the details of past projects. And if you’re unsure where to start, consider working with a professional or using online tools to fine-tune your format and content.

Let’s talk about growth. This one might feel a little overwhelming. But trust me, investing in yourself now pays off big time later.  Now’s the time to take stock of your abilities and look for ways to level up. Identify gaps in your skills or areas where you can grow to stay competitive in your field. 

Want to know where your gaps are? Read this and follow the steps to prioritize your efforts based on what employers are looking for.

Ask yourself: What’s one skill that would make me more marketable? Maybe it’s earning a certification in project management or finally tackling that Excel course you’ve been avoiding. Platforms like LinkedIn Learning and Coursera make it easy (and affordable).

Do you know what severance benefits your company offers? What about COBRA or unemployment eligibility? If your answer is “not sure,” it’s time to dig in.

Grab your employee handbook, check your HR portal, or schedule a meeting with your benefits team. Knowing what’s available to you can make a world of difference in a tough moment. For example, some companies offer career transition services as part of their severance package, while others allow you to cash out unused PTO. Start looking into the Health Marketplace to see what’s available to you. COBRA options can be quite costly.

Knowledge is power... and in this case, it’s also money. Don’t leave money or opportunities on the table—do your homework now.

#5. Take Care of You

The toughest part of a layoff? The emotional toll. Uncertainty can mess with your headspace if you’re not careful. That’s why protecting your mental and emotional well-being is just as important as updating your resume.

Here’s how to keep your energy aligned:

• Practice mindfulness or meditation to stay grounded.

• Journal your thoughts—it’s a great way to process and reflect.

• Lean on your support system or connect with a career coach (like me!) who can help you navigate this transition with confidence.

The first thing you need to do is thoroughly research job descriptions to understand what hiring managers in your desired field are looking for. This process gives you the foundation to position yourself as the perfect candidate. Here’s how to do it:

I. Collect 15–20 Job Descriptions

• Search job boards like LinkedIn, Indeed, or Glassdoor for roles that match your desired position.

• Look at a variety of postings from different companies to identify patterns in requirements, skills, and language.

FOR EXAMPLE

If the roles you’re targeting emphasize “data-driven decision-making,” look at your past experiences for moments where you used data to inform choices. For instance:

“Analyzed sales data to identify trends, leading to a 15% increase in revenue through targeted campaigns.”

This connects your skillset to what the employer values while showing measurable results.

This step is crucial because it will help you clarify your unique value proposition and make it easier to tailor your resume, LinkedIn, and interview responses in future steps. • Break It Into Small Chunks: Focus on one skill at a time instead of trying to tackle everything all at once. This will help you stay organized and avoid overwhelm.

• Leverage Feedback: Ask trusted colleagues or mentors to review your skill list and examples. They might highlight strengths you didn’t think of.

• Use Tools to Stay Organized: A simple spreadsheet or tool like Trello can help you categorize skills and examples efficiently.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR

When I first started trying to align skills with job requirements, I made the mistake of overthinking it. I focused too much on what I didn’t have rather than what I already brought to the table.

I’ve also seen others make similar missteps, such as:

• Mistake #1: Trying to list every skill instead of prioritizing the most relevant ones. Instead, focus on 5–7 high-impact skills tailored to your target roles.

• Mistake #2: Copying job descriptions word-for-word without adding personal context. You’ll get better results if you back up skills with specific, measurable examples.

• Mistake #3: Assuming gaps in skills disqualify you. If you’re missing something, show a willingness to learn and note steps you’re taking to close the gap (e.g., enrolling in a course).

Just keep focusing on what you do bring to the table and how it aligns with the roles you’re targeting. This mindset will keep you on track and set you up for success in the next step.

Your task now is to transform your transferable skills into concise, results-driven STAR stories that clearly show your value. These stories will be your secret weapon for resumes, interviews, and networking conversations. Here’s how to do it:

I. Start with the STAR Framework:

• Situation: Think of a specific scenario where you made an impact. Set the stage with just enough detail to provide context.

• Task: What was your responsibility in that situation?

• Action: Describe the steps you took to solve the problem or achieve the goal.

• Result: Highlight the outcome, using measurable results wherever possible.

• At the top of your resume, include a summary that ties your experience to your career goals. For example:

II. Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile for Visibility:

• Use the headline to showcase your target role and key skills. For example:

No matter what you do, don’t rush through this step or leave it half-finished. Neglecting to optimize your LinkedIn or forgetting to tailor your resume will only risk being overlooked by recruiters or hiring managers.

Instead, slow down and focus on the details. As the saying goes, “How you do one thing is how you do everything.” Make sure your resume and LinkedIn reflect the effort and professionalism you bring to your work.

This is it—the final step. You’ve made it this far, so get ready to celebrate! 🎉

Now it’s time to take everything you’ve done and put it into action by connecting with the right people. Networking is not just about landing interviews; it’s about building relationships that can open doors and give you insider insights into your target roles.

HERE'S WHAT TO DO NEXT

I. Leverage LinkedIn:

The first time I started networking to switch careers, I completely overthought everything. I spent hours writing and rewriting connection requests, wondering if I’d sound annoying or out of place. I finally hit send on a message to someone I admired—and guess what? They responded with, “Absolutely, I’d love to chat!”

It turned out to be one of the most valuable conversations I had. They not only gave me great advice but introduced me to another contact who eventually referred me for a role.

The biggest lesson I learned? Just start. Most people are happy to help if you approach them respectfully and authentically. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about putting yourself out there.

It just goes to show there’s more than one way to network successfully. So more than anything, do what works for you. Whether that’s sending connection requests on LinkedIn, attending a meetup, or joining an online community, the goal is to make connections that feel natural and meaningful.

So here are those 3 lessons I learned this year that have really changed my life:

Lesson 1: Alignment Means Letting Go of What No Longer Fits

The “what” in this lesson comes down to three key areas: beliefs, people, and habits.

Beliefs

At the start of 2024, I was holding onto outdated ideas of what success “should” look like. I thought alignment was a destination—something to achieve through constant hustling, long hours, and over-delivering.

I used to think success meant constantly hustling—being the first in the office, the last to leave, and always over-delivering. I believed success was about external validation: matching or surpassing the accomplishments of those around me, achieving the "perfect balance," and tying my worth to titles, income, and professional recognition.

People

I let go of two friendships that no longer aligned with who I’m becoming. These were one-sided relationships where I was constantly fixing their problems but never receiving the same support in return.

It was a hard but necessary realization: some people, no matter how much we care about them, aren’t capable of being the support system we need. And that’s okay. What I’ve come to understand is that the people around you are just as critical as the right job or partner. 

Habits

Letting go wasn’t just about people—it was also about patterns in my own life. I had habits like overcommitting and procrastinating that left me anxious, overwhelmed, and constantly playing catch-up.

This year, I started tracking my habits to create small, intentional changes. This wasn’t about perfection but about creating space for routines that grounded me and supported my growth. Letting go of chaotic habits opened the door to productivity, better mental health, and more alignment in my daily life.

Alignment isn’t about doing it all or being perfect. It’s about letting go of what no longer fits—whether it’s outdated beliefs, draining relationships, or habits that keep you stuck.

Ask yourself:
What are you holding onto that no longer serves you? What would alignment look like if you let it go?

Lesson 2: Resilience Is Built in the In-Between Moments

Resilience isn’t something you’re born with—it’s something you build, moment by moment, especially during times of uncertainty and transition. One of the most defining moments for me was being laid off.

Losing my job felt like the rug was pulled out from under me. It wasn’t just the financial impact; it was the sudden loss of stability and direction that shook me to my core. For weeks, I wrestled with questions like, “What’s next?” and “How do I rebuild?” But what I learned is that resilience doesn’t mean having all the answers right away—it means choosing to keep moving forward, even when you don’t have a clear path.

Lesson 3: Growth Doesn’t Always Look the Way You Expect

2024 wasn’t about big, flashy wins or rapid transformations for me. Instead, it was a year of quiet, subtle shifts—the kind of growth that’s easy to overlook in the moment but transformative when you look back.

One of my biggest wins this year was choosing to prioritize time with my kids.  I made the intentional decision to pause and be present for them after being laid off—something that felt both liberating and unfamiliar. Letting go of the constant hustle and valuing presence over productivity wasn’t an easy shift, but it was one that brought me closer to what truly matters.

Another unexpected win came in the form of seeking support. For years, I prided myself on being the one who “had it all together,” but this year, I realized that leaning on others—whether through therapy, coaching, or simply reaching out to trusted friends—wasn’t a sign of weakness. It was an act of self-care and resilience.

I also gave myself permission to take a break from the noise of social media. Logging off allowed me to reconnect with myself, get clear on my priorities, and focus on intentional growth without comparison or distraction. It wasn’t easy to step away, but it gave me space to reflect and realign.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As I close out this year, I’m stepping into 2025 with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to taking things slow and steady. This year reminded me that I don’t have to do it all, all at once. Instead, I want to focus on alignment, intentional growth, and creating a life that feels as good on the inside as it looks on the outside.

Let me start by saying this: 2024 didn’t go as planned.

If you’ve ever felt like you were juggling too much, trying to be everything to everyone, or pushing yourself to the point of breaking—then you’ll understand exactly where I’m coming from.

Last year, I hit a wall. Hard.

Starting a business, being a full-time mom to my two beautiful kids, and working a demanding job left me burned out in ways I couldn’t ignore anymore. I was spinning my wheels, trying to do everything perfectly, while secretly battling imposter syndrome and the weight of being a Manifesting Generator (hello, constant energy bursts followed by deep crashes).

And just when things couldn't get worse, I was laid off in March. 

Instead of jumping straight into the next thing, I decided to pause. For the first time, I chose to take a step back and be fully present with my kids.

This decision didn’t come out of nowhere—it was the result of some deep soul-searching. 

Before the layoff, I was constantly working, putting in extra hours on weekends, and trying to keep up with everything. But those weekend hours came at a cost. While I worked, my kids would ask me to cuddle and watch movies with them. And every time I said, “Not now,” I felt a pang of guilt that I couldn’t ignore.

I also couldn’t shake the feeling when I dropped them off at after-school care—something I hated as a child myself. I wanted so badly to give them the time and presence I had longed for growing up, but I was stuck in a cycle of trying to do it all.

So when the layoff happened, I realized I had an opportunity to do something I’d never done before: choose alignment over achievement. 

I decided to pause—not because I didn’t love having a career, but because my kids are my ultimate priority. And if I couldn’t find a way to balance both in a way that honored my values, then it was time to reimagine what “success” really meant for me.

What Alignment Looked Like in 2024

That pause gave me space to reflect on what alignment truly means. It showed me something I’d been avoiding for years: many corporate settings simply aren’t set up to allow women to win holistically.

(To be clear, the role I was laid off from was an exception—it offered incredible flexibility and I worked with an amazing manager. My reflections here are shaped by years of experiences in environments that didn’t provide the same level of support.)

While I value my career and the sense of purpose it brings, working in environments that demand constant connectivity from 9-5 without flexibility? That’s just not something I can sign up for anymore.

I realized that alignment isn’t just about achieving goals; it’s about achieving them in a way that honors every part of who you are. For me, that means:

• Prioritizing my kids without guilt.

• Embracing work that allows flexibility and fulfillment.

• Focusing on helping other women navigate these same challenges.

This year wasn’t perfect, but it was transformative. It reminded me that I don’t have to choose between ambition and authenticity—I can have both, and so can you.

2025 isn’t about rushing to the finish line; it’s about creating sustainable momentum. I want this year to feel aligned—not overwhelming. So here’s my promise to you: I’ll focus on delivering value through content that feels meaningful, inspiring, and useful.
