Well we all know the results of the local elections now, and perhaps some peoples worst fears were not realised. Congratulations to Mark, Mike & Alison from Chislehurst Matters though, who grabbed 61% of the vote.

Whilst the traditional parties squabble amongst themselves, it’s great that we have a local party that firmly puts the needs of Chislehurst residence first.

For those that work in the City, there’s a good chance you’re familiar with the ‘Jampot’ as it’s informally known. For those of you that don’t, then the Jamaica Wine House can be quite hard to find as it’s located down one of the many narrow alley ways in the City; you basically have to know it’s there.

The building dates back to 1869 and is Grade II listed, and started out as a coffee house. It’s quite an impressive building from the outside, and inside it’s made up of smaller partitioned areas, which gives it character, if not difficult to find people!

The Bickley Arms are taking bookings for tables to watch the World Cup. If you’ve decided not to take out a small mortgage to watch games in the US, this could be your next best option. No doubt the team will have the big screen set up in the rear garden so that you can watch the game in the sun.

On Saturday, the Chislehurst Commons are putting on an exhibition to highlight the 180 acres of greenspace that we have in Chislehurst. The event is taking place at St Nicholas Church Village Hall, on Church Lane from 2:30.

Chislehurst Glebe FC are looking for new players, particularly at the U16, U13 levels. They are also hosting a talent ID day on May-30 for U11 and U12 at Foxbury Avenue. They are also looking for ladies for the 26/27 season.

🚂 The Commute 🚂

The Unions are planning yet more tube strikes. Starting on May 19 and continuing on May 21. This all relates to ongoing conversations (disputes) about moving to a 4 day week. Definitely worth thinking about working from home if you can on those days.

Bought lunch at another new spot for me this week in Spitalfields Market at Kushi. This place offers a short menu of Japanese delights such as chicken katsu or beef meatballs.

(Did you know: Katsu (カツ) is a shortened form of katsuretsu (カツレツ), the Japanese translation of the English word “cutlet”)

The netball club are looking for new players. Playing in the Kent North West Divisions 2, 5, 7 and 9, the club are holding a couple of trial sessions for those who’d like to get involved on May-30 and Jun-27, both 10am - 12 pm at Coopers School.

Talking of Coopers School, if you attended between 2001 and 2006, you might be interested in the reunion that’s taking place on Saturday at The Oaks Eltham from 7:00 pm.

Pencil in the 13th: Chislehurst Rotary Club's Summer Fair is back on the Common (near Prickend Pond) for what is, for many, the unofficial start of proper summer. Expect stalls of every variety, a funfair, food outlets, and crucially, a Beer & Pimm's tent.

A little while a way yet, but it’s worth noting that Charing Cross and Waterloo East stations will be closed for a 22-day period over the summer. Starting on Jul-26 until Aug-16, there will be significant engineering works taking place. Trains will either be diverted to Victoria, Cannon Street and Blackfriars, or simply terminate at London Bridge.

You might be more familiar with this famous restaurants location in Soho, but the “Press for Champagne” button can also be found right in the heart of the City. Located in the “Cheese Grater” on Leadenhall Street, right opposite the Lloyds building, Bob Bob Ricard is a serious restaurant. The interior is quite something to witness and apparently is inspired by the Royal Yacht Britannia, but it also reminded me of the Orient Express.

Definitely a venue to go if you’re trying to impress your guests and your wallet is full.

The latest edition of this tradition even takes place this Saturday on Chislehurst High Street. Going back over 200 years, the Crowning of the May Queen will take place around 15:00.

The Elmstead Woods Station Gardening Club are holding a plant, book and cake sale on May 17th at the station and will include a guided walk and even a visit from the Bromley Mayor. This will be a good chance to see the station gardens.

This Saturday, there will be a charity event at the Bickley Arms for Dogs for Good. With a photo both, paw prints and a raffle there should be lots of fun for you and your pooch.

It’s been fun commuting to work this week what with tube strikes and engineering issues on the trains, but we all survived. Luckily in Chislehurst we’re not as reliant on the underground as other areas, but you still might need to get across the city to your final destinations. The only upside was that we’ve had some really good weather this week so walking around the city has not been too arduous.

When a colleague suggested we get “a world class” sandwich for lunch this week, I raised an eyebrow, but tagged along expecting something decent, and I can say that Crunch in Spitalfields market did not disappoint. Serving just a couple of different options, Crunch serves up toasted sandwiches with a crips bite, hence the name. I went for a Korean chicken style option which was very nice, and a decent price, but, it was a bit small. My colleague had two!

The Maypole Project's annual half marathon returns on Sunday 17 May, starting from Glebe FC Clubhouse. The route will have a good mix of urban sections and some countryside as it winds through Scadbury Nature Reserve. Whether you know anyone competing or not, it could be a good even to support. Sana are hosting a half-day wellness retreat inside Chislehurst Caves on Sunday 17 May. The session includes a sound bath and breathwork. By the looks of it, the event might be sold out, but worth keeping an eye out for any subsequent events.

It’s certainly been a fun week trying to get to work. Our friends at the RMT decided to pull a couple of 24hr tube strikes that severely impacted people’s ability to get to work or go about their day in the city.

It's mid-April and the commute has been doing its best impression of a creative writing exercise this week with engineering works on the Southeastern main line meant Sunday's Cannon Street services vanished entirely, and the weekday services from Monday through Friday were running on amended timetables. The Visit Chislehurst Motor Show is back on Sunday 7 June 2026, on High Street and Chislehurst Commons. Registration is now open for classic cars, supercars and bikes (£14 per vehicle). The day features a funfair, local stalls, fire brigade displays and a steam engine — the biggest motor show in the South East.

We’re in the midst of some engineering works on the trains at the moment. Engineering works on the Southeastern network ran from Monday 13 through to Friday 20 April, with amended services across the board — and Sunday 19 April sees no Southeastern service at London Cannon Street at all (amended services run via Greenwich and Bexleyheath instead).

We had a brief taste of summer in the week, with temperatures hitting 23℃ on Wednesday with plenty of sun. This amazed my new colleague from San Francisco who wasn’t prepared for such warm climes in April, but what shocked him more is how the weather returned immediately back to grey skies and 10 degrees cooler the very next day.

Starting on Sunday 12th April, The National Trust are kicking off a series of walks and talks around Petts Wood & Hawkwood Estate. Beginning at 2:00 pm, the first walk will discuss how the woods were saved.

Whilst a lot of attention will be on whether Bromley can win Division 2 of the Football League, we should not forget that Chislehurst have their own football team on the form of Chislehurst Glebe FC. The season is soon coming to a close, so you only have a few more games to watch them, including this Saturday at 3:00 pm at Foxbury Avenue.

April. The time of year when we have no idea what to wear on the journey to work. Is it too early to leave the coat behind? Do you layer up? Have you dug out the lighter summer coat? Given Chislehurst is in Zone 5 of Greater London, its locations like this down by the stream, that could make you think we’re way out in the countryside. This is one of the best weekends of the year, the long Easter Weekend with four days off! When I was younger this was a great chance to go out to all hours with the knowledge that work was a distant commitment on Tuesday. These days, the long weekend is more a chance to relax, spend time with family and maybe do some travelling.

What’s also great about the long weekend is that we now have lighter lights since the clocks went forward, and with the gardens coming alive it really does feel like a positive and wholesome time of year.

I’m back to the coffee theme this week, but someone suggested Zero to One to me and I went and checked it out one lunchtime. Whilst there are many, many coffee shops in the city, Zero to One is probably the only Vietnamese venue that I know of. They roast their own coffee and their Natural Catimor was excellent as an Americano.

p.s. if you’re looking for good coffee in london, you should check out Gourmet Coffee London.

This weekend a new bakery is opening up on Bellmont Parade. Taking a slightly different approach, the “Cake Shed” will operate on an honesty policy. So make sure you only take what you pay for! You’ll be able to pay with cash, or bank transfer.

If you’re looking to eat something other than chocolate or roast lamb, then you might want to consider Giggling Squid on the High Street for a family dinner where kids will eat free (two courses) over easter.

Hopefully many of you will be travelling less into the city over the Easter holidays, but it is worth noting that it looks like there won’t be any engineering work and the trains will be running normally.

This will be one of the better parts of the year. On Sunday the clocks will go forward which does mean we lose an hour, but the nights will be noticeable lighter. There’s a great Korean right opposite my new office and it’s quickly becoming my go-to place when I need something quick, but still tasty. Bento Bap opened in December 2024, but appears to be well established now with a steady trade each lunch time. Art on Parade are running a number of arts days over Easter at the Ripley Arts Centre. Events include hot cross bun decoration, easter egg painting and easter pop-up cards. The days are on Mar-30, Apr-01 and Apr-3, from 10:00 to 15:00.

Chislehurst and West Kent CC are running a couple of cricket camps over the holidays which will be a great way to keep your kids entertained. Suitable for boys and girls aged 5-15. The events in the middle east have resulted in a huge rise in the price of oil, which has been quickly reflected at the petrol station. For those of using the car to commute, this increased cost will becoming very obvious on your bank account. If you’re taking the train however, the decision to freeze prices recently is actually a good piece of fortune, and we can’t often say that about our country’s trains.

I’ve been getting an earlier train all of this week, and have seen an entirely new set of faces on the morning commute. It always interests to me to see if there’s theme of people that get earlier versus later trains. Are these just early birds that like to be at work before everyone else? Or does their job require they start early? We’ll probably never know. Maybe one day we can survey the whole carriage 🤣

I’ve known of this vendor in Spitalfields for many years, but I’ve never bought anything from here, having always preferred Fen Noodles opposite, however, that changed last week when a colleague said they’d like to try it. And what a great choice! We both took the special which was barbecued pulled pork in focaccia, and it was absolutely delicious.

The Roost Cafe in Chislehurst Rec is under financial pressure as Bromley Borough Council will require 15% of their turnover, once revenue goes over £10,000. Considering the pavilion was built almost entirely from community funds, this seems pretty steep. There are still plenty of other costs that need to be paid, and the venue is an important community asset used by many different local groups.

From next month, they may only open at the weekend for football.

It was announced in the news this week pub chain Green King are to make some cost cutting changes with a number of pub closures which could impact around 150 jobs. We have two Green King pubs in the area, The Tiger’s Head on the common, and The Chequers on Southborough Lane. Pubs have always been a part of our community and it’s a shame to see how many of them are closing these days. This is a friendly reminder to use them or lose them.

The planned tube strikes have been called off, so no excuse to work from home next week, whilst both sides negotiate.

As a reminder, the trade union wants a 32-hour week over four days, meaning drivers would work a total of three hours less each week for the same salary.

There’s a “Yellow Brick Road” through the commons, which has been bought back to it’s former glory. Originally laid in 2004, the path from Royal Parade to the High Street had become pretty overgrown, but thanks to a number of volunteers, it has been restored.

The weather has regressed this week and we’ve gone back to grey skies and cold temperatures, so if you’re looking to espace our current climes without leaving London, a few hours spent in Los Moches will do the trick. Despite offering much needed care to cancer patients in the region, there are still plans to close the inpatient care at Chartwell Cancer Unit at the PRUH. There are now over 30,000 signatures on the petition at Change.org and if you’ve not offered your support, you still can here.

St Nicholas church as put on bit of an Easter Trail. There are 10 animals waiting to be found hidden around the High Street and St Nicks church. We understand that you’ll need to look both high and low for the elusive animals. To help you on the quest, booklets are available from Monday from the Village Hall 9am-1pm priced at £5.

Tube Strikes are coming. Unfortunately, the RMT Union have decided to call a number of strikes over the next couple of weeks. Starting from March 24th there will be 6 separate, 24hr strikes, ending May-22.

After 6 years, popular coffee shop Joëlls is shutting it’s doors. The last coffee’s will be served on March-22, so if you want to pop in one last time, you only have a few days to do it. Joells was a venue that opened up during Covid and has been a focal part of the community on the High Street ever since. We’re sure that many people will miss it.

What a joy the last couple of days have been, particularly yesterday. Spring is firmly here in Chislehurst with some much needed sun for everyone. Whilst a cold fog lingered about on Wednesday, yesterday was glorious, so good in fact that the Friends of Chislehurst Recreation Ground ventured back out to the Rec yesterday to carry on with some bits of work.

I’m conscious it’s another coffee shop recommendation this week but I’ve moved office and am exploring all the new local options. This week I managed to get to Nagare on Brushfield Street next to Spitalfields Market. This coffee shop comes well recommended by those in the know, and indeed, the coffee did not disappoint. But whilst the building looks amazing and evokes a past era of Dickensian East London, its pretty small inside, so dont come expecting to sit down.

The Chislehurst Events Calendar for 2026 recently came out and it’s great to see so many wonderful events planned. First up, is the Easter Trail from the Chislehurst Society at St Nicks Church.

Now that we have entered the dizzy heights of spring, Board & Barrel on the High Street have announced that they are opening their roof top patio. As the nights get longer and the temperature warmer, it’s a great spot to take a drink and look over the hub-bub of the High Street and the ponds beyond. I’ll have a French 75 if you’re buying.

🚂 The Commute 🚂

Many of us commute from Chislehurst up to the City or perhaps did so once upon a time, and I think we can all recognise that at times it gets buys. Based on the last couple of Thursday’s it’s far to say the City has been packed. I think a combination of many firms asking staff to be back in the office 4 days a week, if not 5, and the improving weather appears to have bought everyone back into the City. That said, we are pretty lucky we don’t need to catch the train from the country’s busiest train station, Liverpool St. The scene I happily walked past on my way from the office tonight was carnage.

Fair to say Liverpool Street station was a tad busy last night.

I don’t know about you, but I’m one of those people that like to get a decent coffee before I get to the office, and with a new office I take a slightly different route and have noticed a branch of Kiss the Hippo on Cannon Street. It’s a fairly small venue, but does have some seating at the back, but for me, I’m in and out once I’ve got my coffee. They serve their own coffee, and the George Street Blend is a lovely cup first thing in the morning.

Our company does allow this, and my colleague is tempted, but has said, that the stress of taking his dog on the train and also the tube at rush hour is just not worth it. There’s been some excitement, and also sadness about geese up at Rush Pond on Ashfield Lane. It’s wonderful to see nature right on our doorstep and and it certainly makes living in Chislehurst the wonderful place it is. But sadly, it seems not all of the geese and ducks are being spotted by drivers and some are coming to an untimely end. If you work, or find yourself, in the northern part of the City, then you’ll know all about Spitalfields Market which these days, has a vast number of food and drink outlets. One of the best I’ve been going to for 6+ years is Fen Noodles. Their signature item, is the hand-pulled noodles which you can see being made right in front of you. These noodles are fat, long and delicious. The menu is pleasingly short meaning everything on it has to be excellent, and for me, the pick of the lot is the Cumin Noodles.

The award winning Cockpit does some simple things very well, and this is no exception. Being a venue that leads with it’s drink offering, food has always been firmly at the snack end of the spectrum. Pork scratchings are one of the best known accompaniments to a beer, so why not head down on Thursday 26th to snuffle some crispy treats.

When I first started working in London, grabbing a copy of The Metro was second nature as I ventured down into the tube. Even if there were no fresh copies you would always find one discarded on the seats. It was a great resource for catching up on gossip, news and to read the amusing “Love Struck” feature from someone who spotted the love of their life across the carriage. With the launch of social media and greater wifi access, The Metro quickly became a relic and these days, you barely see it. Not sure if that’s good or bad?

Chinese New Year is coming up on Feb 17th, and will usher in the year of the horse. If you want to get in the spirit, having dinner in Chinatown could be a great way to celebrate. There are of course many locations to choose from, (there’s an estimated 600+ business in the area) but one of my go-to spots has always been Leongs Legend. Located right in the heart of Chinatown on Gerrard Street, you couldn’t pick a better spot. The food has always been excellent and the restaurant has a couple of different dining rooms spread over a couple of floors. The crispy fried duck is also excellent.

After a long period of renovations, it’s great to see the Royal Bell in Bromley has been given a new lease of life as a boutique hotel and members club. It opened it’s doors last weekend offering a high-end experience for it’s visitors. Originally built in 1898, the venue has a Bar & Grill and also a performance venue inside too. We’ve not had a chance to get down and visit, but if you have, let us know what your thought.

The Chislehurst Society posted on their Facebook account in the week asking for opinions on whether they should improve various ‘welcome’ signage on pedestrian underpasses. Is this a good idea, especially as these efforts can be prone to vandalism?

Not an entirely direct station for the commuters amongst our readers, but did you see the controversial Liverpool Street station upgrade plans have been approved. A key driver of the controversy is the fact that the station is a Grade II-listed site. The design features building on top of the station and like recent upgrades to Kings Cross and Euston stations, shops and retail appear to be a major part of the build, which doesn’t particularly add any benefit to commuters.

When you think of London theatres, you would be forgiven for immediately think of the famous west end. However, London is a city with world class culture that can be found in many different areas, including the more corporate parts of the City. Bridewell Theatre is a 200 person venue, that I was interested to read was built on top of London’s first ever swimming pool! It could well be worth seeing what’s on if you want something different.

Over the last few years, it’s been well document that many men struggle with mental health. Thankfully, society is slowly changing it’s attitude to how we view men and their emotions. As a consequence, there are now many more resources to support them. One such group is the Nuthatch Retreat, who run a monthly “Men’s Campfire”. The next session is on Thursday 12th Feb, and you can book here.

In a rare move, the Six Nations 2026 already started last night with France hosting Ireland in Paris. However, there are still two other games to go this weekend and what better way to watch than down the pub. The Bickley Arms is often a good place to watch with a couple of TVs in side and a larger screen out in the garden. Pints of Guinness are optional, but I strongly recommend one.

According to a recent Southeastern poster, their camera’s have saved over 200 hours of delays and hold ups on the line. Given that trains still rarely run it time, it’s good to see something making a positive impact, but there’s clearly so much more to do.

We’ve nearly done it! We’re in the last few days of January and I think everyone is ready for Feb. For those of you doing Dry January, you’ve only got a couple of days to go, and if you got this far, congrats to you. I’ve personally abstained for the month, but I think a work event tonight will do for me. We’ve started to see snowdrops poke their heads up out of the ground, and we’re also getting a whole additional hour of daylight since the beginning of the month (roughly 9 hours). Sunlight is a different matter.

Working in the City there is no end of choices to get food for lunch all the way from a supermarket meal deal to Michelin start restaurants. There are also a number of street markets you can go to, that feature a wide collection of food stalls. The nearest one to my current office is Whitecross Street Market where you can get everything from Indian curry, to Turkish wraps, and burrito’s. A good favourite of mine is BBQ Salt & Smoke. The brisket is fantastic, and a pretty decent price for whopping portions.

There’s a lot of doom and gloom around the economy and finance at the moment, but one small silver lining might be that house prices for Bromley are bucking a trend. According to recent ONS data, Bromley registered an annual increase of 6%, compared to a 4.6% annual drop in prices across the whole of London. According to Rightmove data, the average price in Bromley is currently £555,802.

It seems there might be strikes on the Overground in the near future. For those of you that make your way towards Canary Wharf from Chislehurst, this is probably bad news. The strikes are planned for three Thursdays across the next three months with the first scheduled for Thursday February 26. That would seem to be a good day to work from home to me.

It’s well known common sense to never leave things to the last minute, and that includes writing The 8:01. This week, I was in danger of not being able write it given that we had a power cut late yesterday afternoon into the evening. Despite taking refuge in the Bickley Arms for a while, I’m writing this later that I would normally plan. A good lesson to keep writing earlier in the week!

For those of you that have given up booze for January, you’re nearly there! This is your last full week of abstinence, and I’m sure there will be a few of us that take a drink to celebrate next weekend, although the true observers will have to wait for Sunday.

There are times when a salad doesn’t cut it for lunch. This week, we had a team lunch and wanted a sit down meal, but not one that would last all afternoon. And so we took advantage of Gaucho’s Set Lunch Menu. Not one to go on about trains too much, but since Southeastern adjust the timetable a little while back, nothing seems to be on time. Despite the train I regularly get moving forwards by one minute, it seems to be constantly two minutes late each day. And this week, I was actually able to catch the proceeding train to mine as it was delayed so much. We just never seem to be able to run trains on time in this country.

We have a good number of Crystal Palace fans in the area who have recently gone through the full spectrum of highs and lows in the FA Cup; from an outstanding victory over Man City at wembley last year to win the cup for the first ever time, to getting dumped out in the 3rd round by Macclesfield last weekend is the full spectrum of supporting your team. Having a salad for lunch is always a healthy choice, however after the excess of Christmas, a bowl of veg is even more sensible. You are not limited for choice for lunch spots in the city, but somewhere I find myself at least 3 times in week is Atis on Moorgate. They are a small chain and offer a modern salad bar. You can either choose a number of items to make your own custom selection, or pick from one of their menu items. (My current go to is the Blackened Chicken Grains). It’s not the cheapest option, and you should expect to pay between £11-£16. Quite a bit for a salad, but honestly, they are delicious. And make sure you get there no later than 12:30 as the queues for this type of place stretch down the pavement.

Atis feels like a healthy lunch choice.

Following their fantastic achievement of being a CAMRA Greater London Pub of the Year runners up, the Cockpit are due to be presented with their prize next Wednesday Jan 21st at 7:00 pm. Why not go along and raise a glass to this wonderful venue on Royal Parade.

Still a few weeks away, but the Caves will be hosting a homeware market on Saturday 31st with a few bargains to be had, apparently. More details to follow.

Hopefully not too last minute, but the Bulls Head have a Game Supper Night later, which is hosted by Gamekeeper Chris in the main restaurant. This isn’t just eating great food, as you’ll also learn about preparing and cooking roe carcass, pheasant, partridge, pigeon, and venison fillet. Perfect for a wintery Friday night.

Given the time of year it’s not surprise to hear that some many people have some sort of cold. It’s interesting though that people are saying they’ve had it for weeks, going back before Christmas. I know the commute to work this week has been full of people coughing and sneezing, and I include myself in that. I should apologise to the gent I sat next to on Tuesday morning who I could feel getting side eyes from as I entered into yet another coughing fit. A year or so back, I would have just stayed at home, but with so many firms requiring more in-office attendance, this isn’t quite the option it was before.

A lot of us have probably already seen this, but it was interesting to see Chislehurst named as one of the top places to live in London. Coming in at sixth place, just behind Dulwich, it’s believed that a combination of green countryside, open spaces historic pubs, local amenities and good transport links makes it a great place to live. Certainly when I moved out from east London, it was the combination of a quick train ride back to the city, yet being on the edge of some fantastic nature, was a big appeal. It was also good to see one of The 8:01’s favourite spots, The Imperial Arms mentioned in the article.

We also saw a very cold start to the week in the area, with a flurry of snow which seemed to take an age to melt away as it essentially became ice.

Black Sheep Coffee are a national chain, but they have a good number of locations in London and the City. I’ve always liked the fact they remain a little under the radar for most people. They’re not as big as the mega chains like Starbucks, Cost or Nero, but they are also more straightforward than some of the small independents who can be a bit trendy. Prices are on point, and I always find them to be that bit quieter so you can actually take a moment to pause, and enjoy your drink. As an example, the photo below was taken at 8:45 am on Tuesday morning, very close to Moorgate tube. There was also no one behind me. So nice and quiet if that’s more your thing.

Catherine Southon will be hosting a valuation day at Polhill Garden Centre on Sunday 11th. So get up in the attic and dig our any old items that could be worth a few quid.

Chislehurst Invicta scout group are making an appeal for volunteers to help run the group. Without some new assistance, especially for the Cubs section, there is a real danger the group might fold. So if you are interested, and can spare the time, please do get in touch with them.

Once again I overhead a conversation on the train with people discussing how frequently they now have to go into the office. One person in the conversation mentioned they were now required in 5 days a week, which for many office workers seems extreme these days. The only upside to this, is our relatively quick journey time into the city, but still, I’m sure most of us would be happier with just a couple of days. In makes you wonder how this impacts some of our local businesses who know doubt have benefited from more of working from home. Our coffee shops, pubs and other amenities must benefit from having more people stay in the area on workdays.

Firstly, Happy New Year!

It’s another brief edition this week as we’re still taking time to enjoy the seasonal festivities. However, we thought it would be interesting to reflect on how far we’ve come with The 8:01.

We started writing The 8:01 at the end of November 2024, so it's now been going for just over a year. Whilst it started out slowly, we were genuinely pleased to reach over 100 subscribers last week and we hope that we continue to attract new readers.

At its launch, the idea was to provide an upbeat newsletter for those who lived in Chislehurst and commuted into the city for work. Sent out early on Friday morning, it allowed us to focus on what was happening locally over the weekend, but also with a nod to items and venues in the city.
