USA Hockey Brings Home Gold + Eagles Win the Tush Push War

The Chase continues. For the first time since 1980, Team USA is back on top of the hockey world after taking down Canada in a 2-1 overtime thriller to capture Olympic gold in Milano Cortina. Jack Hughes delivered the golden goal less than two minutes into 3-on-3 OT to cap off a tournament that the Americans entered with a true “gold or bust” mentality, while Connor Hellebuyck turned in a legacy-defining performance with 41 saves, including a massive 93-second 5-on-3 penalty kill that may have ultimately decided the entire tournament. Canada rolled out a super line featuring Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, and Macklin Celebrini, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a U.S. squad that hadn’t beaten them in a best-on-best competition since the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.

And if the on-ice result wasn’t enough, the celebration that followed made it all feel even bigger. The USA Hockey locker room was chaos in the best way possible with Toby Keith’s “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue” blasting as the team screamed every word together after ending a 46-year gold medal drought. President Donald Trump even called into the locker room to congratulate the team and invite the entire roster to Tuesday night’s State of the Union, putting a pretty fitting bow on a historic day as Team USA officially gets the full American hero treatment after pulling off one of the biggest wins the program has seen in decades.

The Super Bowl is here, folks, and I'll be honest, I don't care in the slightest. Maybe it's because I'm still bitter about the way things ended with the Eagles and the Sixers at the deadline, but I just don't have any juice in the tank for it.

Weekend Rips is your one-stop shop for all things Philly sports heading into the weekend. I’ll catch you up on what happened this week and set the stage for every matchup Friday through Sunday. Toss in top trending stories from the website and what’s happening at TLL HQ, and Philadelphia’s favorite weekly column is quite literally the only thing you need to read today. Other than the draft list at your local watering hole, of course.

Am I still going to have some guys over to eat wings and slam beers? Of course. I'm not an animal. But I'll be doing it with far less gusto than if the Birds were in the mix.

Philly sports are filled with a general malaise at this moment. The Sixers ducked the tax instead of making a big move at the deadline, the Flyers' only bright spot is a cannoli-sending vigilante named Tony Escargot, and the Eagles are quite literally falling apart at the seams. All that's left for us is to sit back and watch those more fortunate than us compete for a championship.

Find the joy in the pain, my friends. It's going to be absolutely frigid this weekend. So you might as well lock yourself in your dwelling, have a few too many beverages, and wait for the world to thaw. Let this newsletter be the kick-off to your weekend. It's time to let it rip.

Super Bowl LX - Seahawks vs. Patriots - Sunday @ 6:30

This championship bout features two teams that I don't really find to be all that compelling. Yes, Drake "Drake Maye" Maye is a dog, and my sweet Milton Williams is kicking ass in New England. Plus, the Sam Darnold storyline is truly one of the best in sports. But both these teams have me feeling "meh."

The Pats had a cake walk to the bowl, facing Jarrett Stidham in the AFC Championship alone was a blessing. The Seahawks had to beat both of their division rivals to get here, and have earned the -4.5 line bestowed upon them.

Will it be a good game? Probably. Do I care who wins? Not at all. All I care about is having enough food to feed a Roman legion and enough Miller Lites to sedate a stable of horses. The rest is in the hands of the Football Gods.

Sixers take on the Suns on the road - Saturday @ 9 pm

Joel Embiid begged the Sixers to go into the luxury tax and be competitive after winning five straight games. Instead, Jeffrey Epstein associate Josh Harris had his team trade Jared McCain to dodge the tax in a disappointing deadline move. The team responded in kind, blowing a huge lead to the Lakers.

Needless to say, this is a gut punch for Sixers fans. Joel Embiid is playing unbelievably well, Tyrese Maxey is an All-NBA guy, and VJ Edgecombe is an immediate difference-maker as a rookie. Throw in Dominick Barlow making an outsized impact for a two-way guy, and you've got an intriguing squad.

This roster may not be good enough to win the East in most seasons, but in an extremely depleted conference, this could have been their chance. Instead, Josh Harris continued to treat the Sixers like an asset in his portfolio. Fuck this guy.

Even still, he's sending Flyers media cannoli despite being made a martyr. Even our own Chris Stumpo and Derek Dunn got the care package. How he got their address is up for debate. I just know he got them because he's Tony Escargot.

The Chase continues. It’s been a tale of two very different kinds of incompetence this week. On the national stage, Fanatics managed to embarrass itself yet again by rolling out Super Bowl jerseys so bad that fans instantly clocked them as knockoffs. Wrong colors, cheap materials, and a hollow apology from Michael Rubin that completely missed the point only poured gas on the fire. It wasn’t a supply issue. It was a quality issue, and it’s another reminder of what happens when one company controls an entire industry and no longer fears the consumer.

Back in Philly, the Eagles avoided their own potential disaster. After real concern that Vic Fangio might walk away this offseason, the team is now confident their defensive coordinator will return for 2026. With the offensive coordinator search already dragging and key staffers leaving the building, losing Fangio would have been catastrophic for a Super Bowl contender. Instead, the Birds get continuity, stability, and one more run with the man who held the defense together. One story shows what happens when accountability disappears. The weekend is upon us, folks, and, quite frankly, it couldn't come soon enough. Despite the Sixers' win last night, Philadelphia is still a complete mess in the snow, which I assume is because Cherelle Parker weathered the storm in her office with a shitload of airplane liquor bottles, playing RollerCoaster Tycoon, and is still unaware that the blizzard ended days ago. That's just a working theory, but it feels right.

While there is still a ton of snow on the ground, the days are a bit sunnier in the world of Philadelphia sports. The Sixers keep winning, and Joel Embiid is back to his old self. Plus, the Eagles finally hired their offensive coordinator, who appears to be a sneaky-good hire. Sadly, the Phillies have told us to shove it, and the Flyers are so hapless it's legitimately frightening, but in times like these, you have to focus on the positives.

So, who cares if your car is still snowed in? This is the perfect opportunity to mimic our great mayor and get hammered by yourself in a dark room all weekend. Or, you can ride the beautifully maintained rails of SEPTA and see everything winter in this city has to offer. No matter what you do, get it done. It's time to let it rip.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES???? You'd better, because they're happening before our very eyes. Joel Embiid dropped 37 points on the Kings Thursday night, and looked damn good while doing it. You know the league is fucked when Embiid starts openly mocking his opponents on the court while getting any shot he wants.

Pair him with surefire All-NBA selection Tyrese Maxey, and the Sixers are cooking with grease. This team is finally fun to watch again, and it'll be a blast watching them demolish the Pelicans on Saturday night. They are a truly horrific team - albeit fun to watch on occasion - but the 76ers are just too damn hot right now.

Our long national nightmare is over. The Eagles have finally hired their OC. Sean Mannion has been a fast riser in the coaching world after his playing career as a backup QB. He's been a coach for two years and has never called plays - not exactly the pedigree most Birds fans hoped for - but considering how upset Packers fans are by his departure, I'm inclined to find this a good hire.

The biggest concern I have is his hairline. I don't mind a balding king, I'm just looking for consistency in messaging. Just look at these two pictures and tell me I'm not crazy.

The Chase continues. Snowmageddon hit Philly the same way it always does. Some streets cleared, others untouched, and a whole lot of people watching snow plows blast through neighborhoods like it was a prank video, burying parked cars and daring residents to laugh about it. After a recent city worker strike and ongoing service issues, the benefit of the doubt is gone. Narrow streets aren’t new. The infrastructure problems aren’t new. The frustration isn’t either. When basic services feel optional depending on your block, people are allowed to be annoyed.

While the city spun its wheels, Joel Embiid did the opposite. As the streets froze over, Embiid returned to dominance and reminded everyone what actually works around here. Which made Doc Rivers popping up to praise Embiid while simultaneously explaining away his own failures feel almost poetic. Same excuses, different city. Embiid is still here doing the heavy lifting, cutting through the noise, and carrying a city that could really use something functioning the way it’s supposed to.
