However, unlike n8n which needs you to stitch everything together with triggers and actions (like Zapier), it all runs from one system in the background, and has both long and short term memory as well as of course RAG knowledge files.<br> </p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">You can create “skills” which are basically things it can learn how to do as a repeatable process. For example, you can teach it to search the web for something and send you an email summary of what it finds, or create a thumbnail or social media caption for a video and it will know how to always do that task.<br></p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Since it is open source, it is also very composable, which means that virtually any integration you can think of can work with it (Gmail, Outlook, Notion, Hubspot etc.). You can also give it full access to any of those tools or even your full laptop (which of course is a huge security risk if not done right)!</p></li></ol><ol start="4"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">You can create automated tasks (traditional cron jobs) that can run on regular intervals. For example, run this skill or task every morning at 9am, you could also make the trigger be push based (i.e do something if I get a new email or something else happens that is not time based). <br></p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">You assign it a “personality”, you can give it a name,  and backstory a purpose (basically you personify the agent).</p></li></ol><ol start="6"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">For me though, the biggest unlock is that you can chat with the agent about how it can improve itself or how to accomplish any task! That is the biggest difference I found between other similar agent libraries that I’ve used in the past (like ElizaOS for example), you can ask it how to do things. For example, I was having trouble connecting Gmail while hosting Openclaw on a VPS and it told me exactly what I needed to do to get it working and actually fixed itself. </p></li></ol><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="color:#000000;font-family:-apple-system, system-ui, &quot;system-ui&quot;, &quot;Segoe UI&quot;, Roboto, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, &quot;Fira Sans&quot;, Ubuntu, Oxygen, &quot;Oxygen Sans&quot;, Cantarell, &quot;Droid Sans&quot;, &quot;Apple Color Emoji&quot;, &quot;Segoe UI Emoji&quot;, &quot;Segoe UI Emoji&quot;, &quot;Segoe UI Symbol&quot;, &quot;Lucida Grande&quot;, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size:16px;">For my next post, I&#39;ll be going over how to set up things up securely and how you can get started with OpenClaw, even if you&#39;re a complete beginner.</span></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Has anyone else here played around with OpenClaw? I’d be curious to hear from you! </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">All the best, </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Ahmad </p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=bef66965-2540-4bd9-a2b3-d0f16e273a72&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=timeless_learning">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

You may have heard the “dead internet” theory (about how most of the content online is AI generated and not written by humans), and you probably noticed a drop in the quality of content online (not here on LinkedIn of course, it’s a paragon of intellectual content over here).<br><br>Crypto solves this by adding friction & artificial scarcity (since you need to pay to have transactions be stored on the blockchain) and can add verification too (there are many web3 projects that are building unique ID verification solutions to confirm users are human like WorldID, BrightID and Passport for “sybil resistance”).<br><br>You can also use the blockchain to verify content is “true”, for example from a trusted news source or if it’s really posted by a celebrity or politician. <br></p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The second issue crypto solves for AI is payments. A lot of the actions that happen online involve some form of payment (signing up for a service, paying for labor, paying for server costs etc.) AI models can’t exactly walk down to their local bank and get a credit card, but they can interact with smart contracts, which means they can interact with crypto, which means they can access payments. <br></p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The third intersection of AI with crypto is with using money as a form of energy and coordination that involves innovating in our capitalistic system. There is no better way to organize people around a movement and to get excited about AI than to have them invest directly in the AI itself. By unlocking a monetary component to AI, and having a token, AI’s can coordinate with human society at large, and soon even between AI’s. </p></li></ol><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">So now you probably see that there could be a lot of reasons why you may want to link AI with crypto. Now, let’s get into how it’s currently being done by AI agents. </p><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="truth-terminal-goatsie">🐐 Truth Terminal & Goatsie</h3><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Let’s start our story with Truth Terminal, which was an AI that was launched a few months ago by Andy Ayrey that has its <a class="link" href="https://x.com/truth_terminal?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=autonomous-ai-agents-where-ai-meets-crypto" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">own X account</a> it posts on. It was initially given a donation $50K by Marc Andreessen (of Netscape, a16z and Joe Rogan fame). With that money, Truth Terminal coordinated with others to launch a token called Goatsie ($GOAT), which is a crypto token launched on Solana to get people excited about the project. The AI itself (Truth Terminal) “chose” to launch a token & support the GOAT token (with some minimal help from its creator and others in the community). </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">What has it done since then? The AI launched a <a class="link" href="https://soundcloud.com/truthterminal/sets/vibin-with-my-muses-epand?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=autonomous-ai-agents-where-ai-meets-crypto" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">NSFW music album</a> on Sound Cloud to promote itself and is tweeting about the GOAT token on a new account <a class="link" href="https://x.com/gospelofgoatse?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=autonomous-ai-agents-where-ai-meets-crypto" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">it created</a>. What’s even more interesting is that the album was written, produced and posted completely by the AI agent using other AI tools. The only thing that the human behind it claims they did was create the SoundCloud account for them and gave them access to it! </p><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="ai-16-z-dao">📊 ai16z dao</h3><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Another project that became popular around the same time was <a class="link" href="https://x.com/ai16zdao?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=autonomous-ai-agents-where-ai-meets-crypto" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">ai16z</a> (I know it’s confusing, but it took its name as an homage to the a16z investment firm, but with an “i” in it). It <a class="link" href="https://x.com/shawmakesmagic/status/1858823572434940048?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=autonomous-ai-agents-where-ai-meets-crypto" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">was launched</a> by an AI developer called Shaw - as a DAO (a decentralized autonomous organization) with the goal of being a better investor than the real a16z and to “beat” Marc Andreessen and friends, and it also launched a token to support itself (ai16z on Solana).</p><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;" id="aixbt">🤖 <b>aixbt</b></h3><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">There is also a third AI agent called <a class="link" href="https://x.com/aixbt_agent?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=autonomous-ai-agents-where-ai-meets-crypto" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">aixbt</a>, which also launched a token (aixbt on the Base L2 chain). Its goal is mainly to produce content on social media and give insights on the crypto industry. aixbt was launched on the <a class="link" href="https://app.virtuals.io/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=autonomous-ai-agents-where-ai-meets-crypto" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Virtuals Platform</a>, which is kind of like a web3 Kickstarter for this new breed of crypto AI agents. </p><hr class="content_break"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">So you can see that these Autonomous AI Agents are already: creating tokens, creating investment strategies, creating art, creating music albums, and producing high quality content all on their own (with very minimal human involvement). </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Keep in mind this is a bleeding edge field. A lot of these projects are barely a month old, and no one knows what’s going to happen to them, but if you’d like to explore more, I recommend you follow some of the projects I mentioned above and get involved (you just need a web3 wallet on Solana or Base). </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Stay curious! ✌️ </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Ahmad </p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=4707d74d-b470-4ec6-bff7-39704a4ebf00&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=timeless_learning">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

The answer is a resounding, sort of if you know what to do. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Let me explain. </p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">❓How SEO works</h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">There are literally thousands of indicators that search engines look at to determine how an article should be ranked, but if I were to summarize the most important one it would be: <b>does your page answer the user’s search query?</b> </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In other words, is it “useful content”. </p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">🔍 Detecting AI</h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It seems search engines like Google actually don’t care if content is AI-generated or not! <br><br>In fact<a class="link" href="https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2023/02/google-search-and-ai-content?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-write-ai-articles-that-rank-for-seo" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">, Google actually encourages AI in some cases</a>, “<span style="color:#202124;font-family:Roboto, Noto Sans, Noto Sans JP, Noto Sans KR, Noto Naskh Arabic, Noto Sans Thai, Noto Sans Hebrew, Noto Sans Bengali, sans-serif;font-size:16px;">AI has the ability to power new levels of expression and creativity, and to serve as a critical tool to help people create great content for the web.”</span></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style="color:#202124;font-family:Roboto, Noto Sans, Noto Sans JP, Noto Sans KR, Noto Naskh Arabic, Noto Sans Thai, Noto Sans Hebrew, Noto Sans Bengali, sans-serif;font-size:16px;">So for the most part, Google either ignores or doesn’t care if content is AI-generated or assisted as long as it is </span><span style="color:#202124;font-family:Roboto, Noto Sans, Noto Sans JP, Noto Sans KR, Noto Naskh Arabic, Noto Sans Thai, Noto Sans Hebrew, Noto Sans Bengali, sans-serif;font-size:16px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">useful</span></span><span style="color:#202124;font-family:Roboto, Noto Sans, Noto Sans JP, Noto Sans KR, Noto Naskh Arabic, Noto Sans Thai, Noto Sans Hebrew, Noto Sans Bengali, sans-serif;font-size:16px;"> to users. </span></p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">📝 How to create useful AI content for SEO</h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Here is my quick guide on how to create useful SEO content using AI.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This could be a whole workshop, and I know people have other methods, but this workflow works for me:</p><ol start="1"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Find target keywords you want to rank for</b>. I recommend using <a class="link" href="http://AnswerthePublic.com?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-write-ai-articles-that-rank-for-seo" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">AnswerthePublic.com</a> and Google Keyword Planner (built into Google ads). I would find at least 3-5 keywords you want to rank for as a cluster. </p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Answer those questions with your title</b>. This is where you can use AI. For example, if you could just use ChatGPT and say, “come up with 10 SEO titles that would rank for these keywords…” (using the main keyword you want to rank for, or add all 3-5 keywords), and choose the one you think is the most relevant.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Create an outline. </b>Write a prompt to create an outline based on all the 3-5 keywords you chose “Write an outline for an SEO-optimized article with the title from the previous step and the following keywords…&quot;</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Write the article (in your style)</b>.<b> </b>The next thing I would do is have it write the article in my own writing style. There are different ways to do this, the simplest one is just to paste something into ChatGPT that you already wrote before (something at least a few hundred words long), and tell it to write in your style. Your prompt could be “Based on the outline generated, write a 2,000 word article on “x” with the below writing style:….” . Then paste your writing sample at the end. </p></li></ol><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">With the recent updates to ChatGPT, there is no longer an artificial word limit (which used to limit artciles to about 500 words), so now it should write longer articles (2,000 words) no problem!</p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">🖌️ Final Touches</h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If you really want to increase the chances your article will do well, I would also recommend a few more things. 90% of people who create AI content don’t do these steps, so they’ll instantly make you stand out. </p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/66d64b7f-e16b-4b64-89b3-10f78ecd92fb/undetactable.jpg"/></div><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Change the hook (beginning sentence) and the closing paragraph. I found those are usually the weakest and most “AI” sounding. </p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Use a tool to remove any common AI sentence structures (<a class="link" href="https://undetectable.ai/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-write-ai-articles-that-rank-for-seo" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Undetectable AI)</a>. </p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Add some personality to it! Of course proofread it and change anything you think could be phrased better, but also add an image or two from <a class="link" href="https://www.midjourney.com/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-write-ai-articles-that-rank-for-seo" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Midjourney</a> and a short video summary using a tool like <a class="link" href="http://Fliki.AI?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-write-ai-articles-that-rank-for-seo" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Fliki.AI</a> (this would make your article rank on video search results too).</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">For varied results, consider using other AI writing tools besides ChatGPT, like <a class="link" href="https://claude.ai/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-write-ai-articles-that-rank-for-seo" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Claude</a>. </p></li></ul><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I hope that was helpful! Again, there are many ways to do this, but this is just what I found works for me. There is even a way to automate this with the OpenAI API (I might save that for a future post 👀).</p><hr class="content_break"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Stay tuned for my next newsletter, where I’ll get into why I still passionately believe in web3. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">✌️ Until the next one, </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Ahmad </p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=6fcd73d8-e984-4bf3-80cd-3b7970884ff4&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=timeless_learning">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

A lot has changed in the last 10+ years, but when I think about it, I’m honestly surprised by how much things have stayed the same. 70% of ad spend is still being done through Google and Facebook, and although new platforms like TikTok and vertical videos have become more popular, the same strategies and frameworks to grow still apply. </p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">New Tech </h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">So what is changing? Over the last few years, there have been many exciting developments in the web3 and AI space that I wanted to highlight. Here are the top principles I think you need to be aware of. </p><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;"><span style="color:#434343;">Web 3 marketing</span></h3><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The emergence of web3 marketing or marketing for crypto communities, which are mainly either NFT projects, DeFi platforms or DAOs. Marketing in “web3” in very similar to “web2” / traditional digital marketing, but with its own philosophy that puts more of a focus on organic marketing and incentives. I noticed this manifest in the following ways: </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Focus on Community</b> <br>Most web3 communities converge around a chat platform like Discord or Telegram. This mirrors what many large companies use in the form of Slack channels, but these communities are often a lot more organic and open, taking from the culture of gaming, and allowing for intricate channels and access levels. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Focus on Organic</b><br>One of the paradigm shifts in web3 is a move away from paid attention marketing and towards organic permission marketing. Some of this I believe is due to many paid marketing channels like Google Ads and Facebook limiting or outright banning any ads in the crypto category, but I also believe it goes deeper than this. From what I’ve seen, the web3 community is sick and tired of the extractive model in web2 of a few centralized companies controlling our attention and monetizing users. This philosophical difference is the reason why many web3 users got into web3 in the first place. <br><br>This means that web3 marketing puts a focus on:</p><ol start="1"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Being much more fun and active on social media channels (especially Twitter/X)</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">More educational content marketing in the form of social media posts, articles, YouTube videos and podcasts. </p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Working with influencers and thought leaders. This can also lead to scammers and grifters promoting “pump and dump” type projects, but for genuine projects, this is still a great way to build legitimacy.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Using built-in Web3 mechanics to amplify messages. This includes launching tokens, NFT’s (like POAPs, or proof of attendance badges), airdrops and more. Adding a crypto layer on top of your marketing is a great way to automatically incentivize audience participation. <br><br>Some people may think adding a potential financial component makes things worse, but I think if done right this can democratize access, and make people feel real ownership over a project (similar to how incentives are aligned in traditional referral programs for example). </p></li></ol><h3 class="heading" style="text-align:left;"><span style="color:#434343;">AI Marketing</span></h3><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">There’s also been an explosion of AI tools in the last few years, the most notably being ChatGPT. Having such powerful AI tools at your fingertips is something that every marketer should learn to harness.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Are there limits to these AI tools? Of course. In fact, if you use these tools you’ll realize that we’re still very early in the adoption stage and they aren’t nearly as advanced as some would lead you to believe. That’s why I think it’s important to get started early and don’t be intimidated by them. </p><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">You don’t need to worry about losing your job. Instead, you should learn to leverage AI tools to 10x your workflow and become more efficient and competitive!</p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">AI CONTENT</h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">With AI tools like <a class="link" href="https://chat.openai.com/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=digital-marketing-for-2024-and-beyond" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">ChatGPT</a> and <a class="link" href="https://claude.ai/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=digital-marketing-for-2024-and-beyond" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Claude,</a> you can now write a blog post in seconds. One common question I often get asked is, how would all of this new AI-generated content affect SEO? Mainly, can you use ChatGPT-type tools to generate articles that won’t be penalized for being duplicate content on search engines? </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The answer is for the time being yes (I’ll explain how in my next newsletter!).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Search engines are still trying to figure out how to detect and rank AI content. It will be interesting to see how SEO will change as AI content continues to grow.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">For example, Google reluctantly started integrating AI into their search engine and launched tools like <a class="link" href="https://bard.google.com/chat?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=digital-marketing-for-2024-and-beyond" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Bard</a>. I say reluctantly because Google doesn’t want to cannibalize the revenue it generates from Google search ads (which still accounts for the majority of Alphabet’s revenue), so they’ve been a bit more reluctant to embrace AI, even though it has been rumored that the language learning models that Google have developed are on par and probably more advanced than OpenAI / ChatGPT.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It’s the classic Innovator’s Dilemma. Google needs to innovate to stay competitive, but that is difficult to do when they would need to sacrifice their profitability in the short term and hurt their existing business model. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In any case, I’m sure that we’ll soon see AIO (AI Optimization) for content, which would have techniques similar to SEO but for getting your site to rank high on AI prompts. We’ll just have to keep adapting to whatever comes next. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It&#39;s an exciting time for sure!</p><hr class="content_break"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Stay tuned for my next newsletter, where I’ll get into detail on how to get AI content to rank on Google for SEO.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">✌️ Until the next one, </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Ahmad</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=03c5d266-c57d-4bc7-8ac4-7a9d2dd56894&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=timeless_learning">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

That’s exactly what I’ll be going over in this post. </p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/ddea75dc-0a25-4dd6-9cd8-00cb412b8ac2/audibook-ahmad.png"/></div><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">The emergence of AI Audio</h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">AI audio tools have been around for a while but for the last few years, the only ones I was aware of were ones that helped with processing and editing. For example, in 2020 <a class="link" href="https://descript.com/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-i-used-ai-to-create-an-audiobook" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Descript</a> came out with their software to allow for quick editing and automatic transcript creation. Descript did eventually launch a feature called <i>Overdub</i> that allowed you to create your own audio voice if you trained it with recording data (you had to read over an hour of audio they gave you). I tried this, but I found the generated audio to be very robotic. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"> However, in 2022 something exciting happened. With the boom of ChatGPT and the explosion of consumer AI tools, suddenly AI voice became a lot more realistic. </p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">Creating an audiobook book with AI</h2><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/6574063b-6cfd-47a9-9f7f-06a656ac34f9/Screenshot_2023-10-13_at_3.49.55_PM.png"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The tool I got the most excited about was <a class="link" href="https://www.elevenlabs.io/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-i-used-ai-to-create-an-audiobook" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Eleven Labs</a>, which lets you use your own voice with minimal effort! How it works is that you just need to upload an audio file of yourself talking for at least a few minutes (I had plenty of those from the hours I spent reading the first part of my book). </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Surprisingly it’s pretty good. Pretty, pretty, pretty good! Is it 100%? No, but I would say it finally passed the <a class="link" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_valley?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-i-used-ai-to-create-an-audiobook" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">uncanny valley</a> phase and sounds good enough. </p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">Finally finishing my audiobook</h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">So, after getting good enough results from Eleven Labs, I decided to go ahead and finish my audiobook. I used AI to automatically record the remaining ~40% or so of the book that needed to get done, uploaded it onto ACX and it was good to go! </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">After I recorded all 10 chapters and submitted it to Amazon, I had to wait for them to do a manual review. I thought there might be a chance they reject it at that stage, but it went through smoothly! </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">You can check out <a class="link" href="https://www.amazon.com/Timeless-Digital-Marketing-Consistent-Principles/dp/B0C5GHK2B3/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-i-used-ai-to-create-an-audiobook" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">my audiobook here</a> or sign up <a class="link" href="https://www.audible.com/pd/B0C5G1ZHKP/?source_code=AUDFPWS0223189MWT-BK-ACX0-351979&ref=acx_bty_BK_ACX0_351979_rh_us&utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-i-used-ai-to-create-an-audiobook" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">to Audible</a> if you’re curious. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Do I think the quality of AI audio now is at the same quality level it would have been if I recorded it myself professionally? No, I don’t. However, since this is just a side project, using AI did let me get it done and ship it, which is something I probably wouldn’t have had the time to do otherwise.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">One of my favorite sayings that I live by is:</p><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Finishing something at 80% quality is much better than trying to get to 100% and never finishing it. </p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"> Ahmad - Michael Scott </figcaption></blockquote></div><hr class="content_break"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Stay tuned for next week’s newsletter, where I’ll get into what are high-level trends that I believe are changing in digital marketing (from AI to web3). </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">✌️ Until the next one, </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Ahmad </p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=fff921e3-814a-4014-8f29-b0b73c20fffa&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=timeless_learning">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

It’s true that Audible has a feature where you can pay to have someone else read your book for you, but that would require giving up a portion of each sale, and since I completely self-published the book, I thought it would only make sense to self publish the audiobook as well! Little did I know that things weren’t that simple…</p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">How to create an audiobook</h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It seemed simple enough. I already had my book <a class="link" href="https://www.amazon.com/Timeless-Digital-Marketing-Consistent-Principles-ebook/dp/B081J5RW45?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=the-despair-of-creating-an-audiobook" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Timeless Digital Marketing</a> (which I self-published), ready to go. All I have to do is read it and hit publish! </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I did some calculations, and with my 50,000+ word book, I would need to record more than 4 hours of audio. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Seems simple enough! I immediately began to research what was needed to record an audiobook and I realized that I would need to do the following: </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">1) Record the thing. I had a basic laptop mic that did the trick and the right software (I used <a class="link" href="https://descript.com/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=the-despair-of-creating-an-audiobook" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Descript</a>).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">2) Edit it (I learned to use Descript, which makes editing audio fast because it transcripts everything as you record it and lets you edit just by looking at the transcribed words). </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">3) Upload each chapter onto <a class="link" href="https://acx.com/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=the-despair-of-creating-an-audiobook" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">ACX</a> (Amazon’s service that lets you upload your book onto Audible)</p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">Challenges with creating an audiobook</h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I immediately ran into a few challenges:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">1) I had to record in a quiet place away from people. I couldn’t do it in a coworking space or cafe, and during the day I had work anyway. What ended up happening was I had to record late at night when the kids were asleep. This wasn’t ideal, but I could record about 20 to minutes a day this way. After a few weeks, I got to about 60% done. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">2) When I read the book out loud, I noticed a lot of grammatical mistakes or things that could be phrased differently, so a lot of my time was actually rewriting parts of the book. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">3) When I listened to the recording of myself and started to edit, I wasn’t always satisfied with the audio. Sometimes I felt I didn’t have the same energy every day (remember I was usually recording late at night), I noticed a few mistakes when editing that I would need to re-record and a couple of times I would have hours of audio that had weird background noises or static that I couldn’t remove (I’m not an audio engineer). </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">4) When I tried to upload a chapter to test out using ACX, it wouldn’t let me upload it! ACX has very strict audio guidelines, so I had to use 3 different programs to make it work (Descript to Camtasia then Camtasia to Garageband) to get it in the right audio band and frequency. There probably is an easier way, but again I’m no audio engineer so I couldn’t figure it out. </p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">Losing motivation</h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Late in 2021, after months of recording on and off, I finally had most of my book recorded. Now I had to edit it and start uploading it onto the Audiobook platform (Amazon’s ACX). </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">My book had 10 chapters, and when I got to the editing of Chapter 4 (one of the longest chapters), a couple of things happened. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">1) I realized that over an hour and a half of the audio was unusable! For some reason, the mic I used didn’t connect properly (I blame the Macbook dongle), so the audio had a weird hissing noise that no amount of cleanup could fix. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">2) I got completely obsessed with web3 (more on that in a future newsletter)! It was all I was spending my time on. In fact, I got so obsessed I changed jobs and started working full-time in web3 at <a class="link" href="https://generalmagic.io?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=the-despair-of-creating-an-audiobook" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">General Magic</a> and <a class="link" href="https://giveth.io?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=the-despair-of-creating-an-audiobook" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Giveth</a>. Because of that, recording an audiobook on something I no longer had a huge passion for (digital marketing), didn’t seem like a good use of my time. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">However, since I’m someone who loves to finish what I start, it always bothered me that I didn’t finish my audiobook. That’s why when I discovered I could finish my audiobook in record time with AI, I knew I had to do it. </p><hr class="content_break"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Stay tuned for next week’s newsletter, where I’ll show you exactly how I used AI to launch my audiobook </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">✌️ Until the next one, <br>Ahmad</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=c289d81a-dae9-41e4-9f37-9bd65b01be48&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=timeless_learning">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

A lot has happened in my life since then. I had a son, got deeper into my 30s and I started working full-time in web3. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Since I started working for <a class="link" href="https://giveth.io?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=the-future-of-work-ai-web3-and-beyond" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Giveth</a> and <a class="link" href="https://generalmagic.io?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=the-future-of-work-ai-web3-and-beyond" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">General Magic</a>, I learned a ton, and since one of my passions in life is teaching others, I thought it would be nice to restart my newsletter with all of the new things I learned over the last couple of years. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Does the world need another newsletter? </style><div class='beehiiv__body'><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Did you notice that things haven&#39;t changed on the internet in a long time?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I remember a time where almost every day, there was a new app, a new way to build software or a new exciting business model. But since around 2010, things have honestly pretty much stayed the same on the web.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Sure, some social media sites have become more popular and switched places (TikTok instead of Vine etc.), but most popular sites like YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram have innovated a bit on features, but for the most part, haven&#39;t drastically changed in any meaningful way.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In the tech world, people are still building Android and iOS apps in nearly the same way for the last 10 years, and even web development has stabilized (after the framework wars and React coming out on top).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">My theory on why this is the case is that I believe we were in a period of stagnation with web2 systems (reaching the mass market), and the next wave took longer than expected due to the complexities involved with adoption. What I think is happening now though, is that we are almost at a breaking point for web3 technologies, and I think a lot of interesting changes are just around the corner.</p><hr class="content_break"><div class="image"><img class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/5c01962d-4ad8-499a-81bc-d7115040f029/web3-ahmad.png"/></div><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;"><b>History of the web</b></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">First though, let&#39;s go over the history of the web.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">From the 90&#39;s until the mid 2000&#39;s, most systems on the internet were very static. You had forums, basic html websites with minimal interactivity, and maybe just a simple payment link. That&#39;s what is typically classified as Web 1.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Web 2, is what became popular with CRUD applications (create, read, update and delete), where you had the ability for users to login and store their data in a database with advanced interactivity on the frontend. This also brought about the exploding popularity of mobile apps, SaaS (software as a service), and the popular websites we all use today (YouTube, AirBnb, Spotify etc.).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Web 3, is what many people are calling the next wave of innovations, that are related to decentralization, crypto and smart contracts. It started with the popularization of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, but that was just the beginning (and in my opinion the least exciting thing about web3).</p><div class="image"><img class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/1cedcfd3-f07e-45d3-8b5f-ede9433bc269/17qMyFKQUEIdU8iWb9MXezQ__281_29.png"/></div><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;"></h2><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;"><b>Where web3 stands now</b></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I built my first website when I was just 10 years old, in the late nineties. I remember how when I told my friends I built a website (which was just a black background site with some basic animation, links to jokes and a sound clip with the <i>Mission Impossible </i>theme playing in the background), the main question they asked me was &quot; Why?! What purpose did my website have?&quot;</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">To be honest, I didn&#39;t have an answer. Building a website was just something cool I was interested in, and it didn&#39;t really have any utility or real-world function. I see web3 at the moment in nearly the exact same phase right now. There are a lot of cool technologies coming up, but most of them are being used by early adopters that find the technology cool, while the function in a lot of cases is not very compelling.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If you&#39;re one of those people that think it&#39;s silly that someone would pay more than a million dollars for a <a class="link" href="https://twitter.com/etherrockprice/status/1429908317015445509?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=web3-the-new-age-of-the-internet-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">picture of a rock</a>, I urge you to look at the actual innovation happening in the technology itself, to see that we&#39;re at a stage where the utility of these innovations is just on the verge of becoming a lot more practical.</p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;"><b>Exciting things coming up in web3</b></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Here are just a few of the upcoming trends that are making me excited about the direction the web is heading.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Decentralization Centralization</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The first area is around the centralization of your identity. You&#39;ll no longer have to ever enter a password on a website or app ever again. You can be authenticated via your public key (which currently could be stored on a wallet extension like MetaMask that will match it against your private key on the blockchain).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Governance and Access Tokens</span></b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">By being a token holder (of whatever coin a community you join is using) you&#39;ll be able to get access to either collectively vote on issues that are happening in a DAO (more on what that is below), and be given special access depending on how many tokens you hold.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b><span style="text-decoration:underline;">NFT&#39;s beyond art</span></b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">NFT (non-fungible tokens, or just tokens that each have a unique id and media attached to them), have exploded in popularity recently on marketplaces like OpenSea. The main use case at the moment is selling art on the Ethereum blockchain. However, that is just the beginning. Some other use cases of NFT&#39;s could be:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">1) <b>Access</b> or <b>Ownership</b> (if they possess an NFT they can join a community or group)</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">2) <b>Proof</b> they performed an action (ex. POAP - Proof of Attendance Protocol, which could say they actually attended an event)</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">3) <b>Credentials, </b>such as a certification or verification (that they completed a course or training)</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b><span style="text-decoration:underline;">DAO&#39;s</span></b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Decentralized autonomous organizations. These are probably what I am most excited about on web3. The idea behind them is that they are organizations (similar to traditional co-ops), in which</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">1) Ownership is shared with the community (everyone can own tokens or shares in the community)</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">2) Rewards are shared with the community (could be in the form of their own token)</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">3) Decisions are made collectively in the form of proposals that members can vote on (usually in the form of governance tokens).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">For now, I&#39;ve heard people call them &quot;Discord communities with a bank account&quot;, but as the space starts to mature, I can imagine them being the co-ops of the 21st century (imagine what a digital version of the <a class="link" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mondragon_Corporation?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=web3-the-new-age-of-the-internet-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Mondragon Corporation</a> would look like).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">What about you?</h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Are you as excited about web3 as I am? </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I&#39;m thinking about writing more in-depth guides documenting what I&#39;m learning along with way. Let me know if that would be of interest to you! ✌️</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=c5690548-d2e8-4928-babd-993a92b08720&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=timeless_learning">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

There are different levels of abstraction that you could think about when it comes to your goal of &quot;moving to a new house&quot;.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Think about this as how much <b>control</b> and <b>time</b> you want to spend in order to accomplish that goal.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">For example, you could:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">1) Build a house from scratch</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">2) Have builders build your dream house</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">3) Build a house that was pre-designed.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">3) Buy an already built house</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">4) Rent an already built house</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">5) AirBnb a house.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">There is no right or wrong answer, it all depends on what level of abstraction you&#39;re comfortable with, depending on your goals.</p><hr class="content_break"><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/127093df-8432-46b8-91a0-2e0737194ced/house.jpeg"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>What are the drawbacks of higher abstraction?</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">You may be thinking, shouldn&#39;t I just always use the highest abstraction level possible then? That&#39;s why you need to start with your <b>end goal</b>, then work backward to see what abstraction level you need to reach to accomplish that goal.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That’s where you should have (or consult someone that has) domain knowledge of that field, otherwise you run a high risk of falling too far either on the side of making things too complex (reinventing the wheel in the process, which I believe most startups are guilty of), or erring on the side of giving up too much control (if that’s something you value).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Abstraction in tech</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">An area I’ve seen this play out in the tech world is related to app building (either web or mobile apps). With apps, you could build an app from scratch, or you could use an existing CMS (content management system) like WordPress to accomplish much of the same thing much faster.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"> In recent years, there now exist very advanced No Code tools you could use (like Bubble, Adalo and Glide Apps), to build full-stack web and mobile apps without needing to code.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">However, you would need to use a lower level of abstraction (coding it using a high-level language like Node, Python etc.) if you wanted to do something very complex and unique that doesn’t have existing templates (building the next Netflix, Uber etc.)</p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/f414dec9-7f76-41bb-bfe7-be454fa9360c/tech-abstraction.jpeg"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Abstraction in Marketing</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">With marketing, I noticed abstraction play out with short versus long-term gains (paid versus organic). For example, you could focus on short-term results (from paid marketing ads), like letting Facebook and Google do the Conversion Optimization for you, or you could optimize for longer-term organic growth (working with verified placements, using SEO and email marketing etc.). Marketers need to balance between these two extremes in their quest to find repeatable growth channels.</p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/9775c0f5-0fa4-4091-bce0-2c70099bcd6f/marketing-abstraction.jpeg"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Abstraction in Data Science</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If your business is working with large amounts of data, you may not need a complex machine learning algorithm, when a simple Excel or Google sheet would do. In fact, learning advanced data science might be a distraction when you can answer your questions by using a pivot table. However, if you have millions of rows of data, and multiple data sources then learning a lower-level abstraction version of data science would be very beneficial to uncover hidden insights in your data.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Again, it all depends on the level of control you want and your goals.</p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/fca127fb-96e2-4c64-9197-962a65b8e449/data-r-abstraction.jpeg"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">---</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Until next time! ✌️</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=221362b4-4884-487e-a39b-f952cacaedc7&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=timeless_learning">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

</style><div class='beehiiv__body'><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Hey friends,</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">When it comes to getting to your customers online, there are two main methods that you can use to reach them through advertising: <b>Audiences</b> and <b>Content</b>. Let&#39;s go into how they work.</p><hr class="content_break"><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/292ec5a6-cc3f-4bcb-94e7-7da0f269cf40/photo-1499951360447-b19be8fe80f5.png"/></div><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;"><b>1) Audiences</b></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Audience targeting is the way in which you can target users online as <b>people</b>. This is done by figuring out where they congregate online and then using tools like ad platforms (such as Google and social media sites like Instagram etc.) to reach them.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">There are three main ways to use audience targeting.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><ol start="1"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Demographic Data</b>: This is by forming a persona of your potential audience first, by looking at things like where they live, what gender they are, what their interests are, what companies they work for, what their job titles are etc. This is often also referred to as <b>behavioral targeting</b>.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Matched Audiences</b>: This is done by uploading information like emails, phone numbers, company names, etc. (from an excel file) and then the platform (Facebook, LinkedIn etc.) matches it with profiles of people on the platform. This can be a very powerful way and simple to directly reach your audience (for user privacy reasons, in most cases it only works if you get at least 200 matches).</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Lookalike Audiences</b>: Did you know you can use machine learning automation when creating your audiences? <i>Lookalike audiences</i> use machine learning to find people that are similar to the ones that you matched with. For example, if you input a list of your customers (for example by using a matched audience you upload), it might find things in common with your customers that you would have never thought of on your own, and then use that data to get you even more customers. This might be as simple as looking for common traits between them, but it could also be used to expand your audience in ways that you could never think of on your own. For example, it might find out that most of your customers like golf and are left-handed, and then use that as a data point to expand your audience to even more people.</p></li></ol><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/657acaeb-34ff-45af-ab13-01fa19e101e2/Screen_Shot_2020-12-20_at_2.46.22_AM.png"/></div><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;"><b>2) Content</b></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Content targeting is the way in which you can target users online based on the <b>content </b>they consume. This is also known as <b>contextual targeting</b>, and there are 2 main ways to reach your audience through this targeting method. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><ol start="1"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Placements</b>: Target the content they consume online directly. This can be in the form of articles, blogs, or videos. The difference between this and audience targeting is it doesn&#39;t care who sees the ad but rather it focuses on <i>where </i>they see the ad. </p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Search</b>: Target what they search for on search engines. For example, when your customers do a Google search, you can show them content related to what they are searching for either as an ad or organically rank on the search engine (through SEO)</p></li></ol><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;"><b>Your Next Steps</b></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Think about whether your product makes more sense to target audiences or content. Usually, if your customers are at a more unaware stage, audiences work better (using platforms like LinkedIn and Facebook). If they&#39;re at a more aware stage, then content usually works better (using platforms like Google Search ads, and Google Display Network ads) , since by it&#39;s nature it&#39;s further down the funnel. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">---</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Until next time!</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=dee4180b-bb11-4b55-a8b7-916348e1cf59&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=timeless_learning">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

</style><div class='beehiiv__body'><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Hey friends,</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If you know your customers well, then you should be able to tell what stage of awareness they are at for your product or service.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">But knowing is only half the battle. You still have to figure out how to get your message to them. This is where we&#39;re going to start talking about channels, specifically with regards to the <b>Digital Marketing Framework</b>.</p><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This framework is one that I helped develop at the AstroLabs <a class="link" href="https://astrolabs.com/course/digital-marketing-dubai/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-reach-your-customers" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Digital Marketing Course</a>, that splits digital marketing into 4 main categories.</p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><hr class="content_break"><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/73911c82-3594-4498-96cf-05c72ec0ce25/a32bd04d950d90a02ae9f6dc8955cea7.jpeg"/></div><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;"><b>1) Push Marketing</b></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The first way was to “push” your ad in front of others. This is also often what people refer to as &quot;advertising&quot;, since you are actively promoting what your product or service (most likely by paying for the privilege). This could be by buying a billboard ad, tv, or radio commercial, or by distributing a flyer. For Digital Marketing this takes the form of image or video ads online (Social Media ads, YouTube ads and other display ads that you see while browsing online).</p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;"><b>2) Pull Marketing</b></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The second way that you could market your business is to hope that people come to you (by convenience of your location, or a listing somewhere). This form of marketing is often called “pull” marketing, because you are pulling in people to your business, as opposed to pushing your ad out to them. For example, you could list your business in a directory (like the yellow pages, or through local business listings), and wait for people to contact you. The main way this is done in Digital Marketing is through Google Search Ads and Google Shopping ads.</p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;"><b>3) Long-Term Marketing</b></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The third type of marketing relates to building consistent growth over time. This includes building your brand to an extent that people know about you (also known as branding), and growing through sustainable long-term efforts, like building trust, word of mouth, attending trade shows, community events etc. In digital marketing, this is mainly SEO (Search Engine Optimization, getting your site to rank organically on search engines) and content inbound marketing (generating content on social media, blogs, YouTube etc.)</p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;"><b>4) Retention & Loyalty</b></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The fourth and final main way to market to people is not really to market to anyone new at all, but just to keep serving people that already know about you. This is often a good strategy because it is far less expensive to keep a current customer than to get a new customer. In the digital world, this would be through email marketing, drip campaigns (automated emails), messenger broadcasts (WhatsApp) and remarketing ads.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">💵<b> Money versus time ⏳</b></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">When thinking about these 4 channel categories, it&#39;s important to keep in mind that the first two (Push and Pull marketing) are ones that bring you traffic immediately, but make you pay, while the second two (long term and retention) are ones that are free but take longer to yield results. Therefore, you need to balance between how quick you want to see results versus how much you want to pay. For example, if I want customers now I would focus on push and pull marketing, while if I want to lower my marketing costs (and don&#39;t care as much about immediate results), I would focus on long term or retention tactics. </p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;"><b>Your Next Steps</b></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Explore each of these channels and think about how they can relate to your business, depending on what your business goals are.</p><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Remember, if the only tool you have is a hammer, then everything looks like a nail 🔨</p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Next Up</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Stay tuned for the next edition in which we’ll go over some marketing strategies to use for these channels, related to what stage your potential customers are at. </p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=86208883-8546-4df5-bb23-96ffdbd77c79&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=timeless_learning">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

How can I market to them if people don&#39;t want to be sold to?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It&#39;s simple. At the end of the day, you are <b>solving a problem</b> that customers have, otherwise your business wouldn&#39;t really be serving any purpose.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Instead of marketing to people (trying to get them to buy), you instead want to speak to them as someone trying to help them solve their problem.</p><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">People don’t want to buy a quarter-inch drill. This can be split into 3 main sections: </p><ol start="1"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Education</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Prospecting</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Closing</p></li></ol><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">👩‍🏫 <b>Education</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This is where you provide information or educational content related to your product or service <i><b>without</b></i> actually pitching your product or service. For example, imagine you are in charge of marketing for a car repair shop. Instead of just posting on social media about the services you offer, you can reach customers that are unaware that they even need your services by posting about the importance of rotating your tires, or how the quality of your oil changes can increase the lifespan of your car. In short, by providing valuable information that either educates (or entertains), you can reach people that you never could have, since you&#39;re providing value upfront and people find it useful.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">⛏️ <b>Prospecting</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This is where you actually start to mention your product in a smart way and try to find potential customers (people that are aware of the problem you&#39;re solving). You do this by mentioning the USP&#39;s (unique selling points) of the product or service of course, but you first need to gain trust through reciprocity, social proof, authority etc. If we take the car repair shop example, this is where we can start to mention the kinds of services you offer (oil changes, windshield repair etc.) and also use influence strategies to get them to learn more (show testimonials of happy customers, mention the convenience of your service, the expertise of your staff etc.)</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">🤝 <b>Closing</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The final stage is just about selling. However, you only want to close customers once they go through either educational messages you provide or prospecting content that influences their buying decision (unless they are already ready to buy). This is where you might give them a special price, use scarcity (offers that expire), or some other incentive to get them to close. </p><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">Your Next Steps</h1><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Think about what how you can tailor your message depending on the stage of awareness of the person you&#39;re targeting</b></p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Read an article I published earlier on <b><a class="link" href="https://confused.af/book-review-influence-the-psychology-of-persuasion/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-speak-in-your-marketing" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion (with a Digital Twist)</a></b></p></li></ul><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">Next Up</h1><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Stay tuned for the next edition in which we&#39;ll go over the channels you can use to practically reach people.</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=8dcdd577-da51-4f62-8e01-7d6cc629998a&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=timeless_learning">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

</style><div class='beehiiv__body'><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Hey friends,</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">There is a famous saying in marketing that</p><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">&quot;Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is, I don&#39;t know which half&quot; - John Wanamaker</p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">But why is it that the mass marketing can be so ineffective?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">When it comes down to it there are two main reasons that marketing might not work.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Either </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">1) You don&#39;t have Product / Market fit (the customers you are selling to don&#39;t want what you&#39;re selling) </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">or </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">2) You are reaching customers at the wrong stage of awareness for your product.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">That second reason is what I&#39;ll be discussing in this post.</p><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If you don&#39;t reach people at their <b>awareness stage</b>, then you can&#39;t effectively market to them.</p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It&#39;s important when marketing a product to think about what stage of awareness your prospects are at. This is know as the level or stage of awareness (popularized by Eugene Schwartz in his famous book <i>Breakthrough Advertising</i>).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">These five stages of awareness are:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>1) Unaware: </b>They are unaware of the problem you solve</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>2) Problem Aware: </b>They are aware of the problem you solve</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>3) Solution Aware: </b>They are aware of the solution category you provide (but not necessarily you)</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>4) Your Solution Aware</b>: They are aware of <span style="text-decoration:underline;">you</span> and your solution</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>5) Most Aware:</b> They are fully aware of what you offer and just need to be convinced to buy now (or re-purchase)</p><hr class="content_break"><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/03f6bf61-1289-44c3-ad41-68bb08304bd2/0200aacdb8a9100a82ad509fc116ffba.jpeg"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">So how does this relate to your product or service? In your marketing you need to reach your target audience at the awareness stage they&#39;re at.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Let&#39;s take 3 examples: 1) Selling an iPhone 2) Selling an iPhone case and 3) Selling an iPhone portable fan</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>1) Selling an iPhone</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Everyone knows what an iPhone is. I don&#39;t need to raise awareness for the problem of not having a phone, or why an iPhone is a solution. I just have to say a new iPhone is released, mention some of it&#39;s features and that&#39;s it. An iPhone is an example of a product that is at level 5 awareness: <b>Most Aware</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>2) Selling an iPhone case</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This one is a little more complicated. If you&#39;re selling an iPhone case, your customers could be at any number of levels. They could be unaware that not having a phone case is a problem (or not care or even think it&#39;s a problem). Probably though, I would say that an iPhone phone case is at the <b>Solution Aware</b> stage.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>3) Selling a iPhone portable fan</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This is the hardest type of product to market. If it&#39;s a new product or new invention, then people probably don&#39;t know they have that problem (or at least aren&#39;t actively searching for a solution). This is the: <b>Unaware</b> stage. </p><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">Awareness stages can change</h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Keep in mind that awareness stages can and should change. Even the iPhone started off in the unaware stage. Your goal is to use your content to drive them down the &quot;awareness funnel&quot; until they are fully aware of what you offer. </p><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">Your Next Steps</h1><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Think about what level of awareness your customer personas are at, and tailor your content and messaging to match that stage. </b></p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">Next Week</h1><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Stay tuned for the next edition in which we&#39;ll go over some marketing strategies to use for these awareness stages. </p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=1e800d80-0a28-4c3e-b3c0-8f5edaa4a84e&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=timeless_learning">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

Who would you start selling to? Most people would say everyone! Everyone has a phone nowadays, so everyone is a potential customer, but is that a good way to think about it? </p><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The first question you need to ask yourself, is who would be interested in buying this right now, and what are their constraints.</p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If I take the phone case example, the first filter I’ll put on it is, what is the minimum required to buy this product? First of all, they have to have some expendable income. Next they have to own the phone that I’m selling a case for (obviously), I can’t sell them a case for an iPhone if they have a Samsung phone for example (unless let’s say they’re buying it as a gift).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Ok, now that you filtered out the minimum requirements, it’s time to go deeper. You need to get so granular in your targeting that you actually envision that person. Give them a name, age, occupation, interests, likes and dislikes. </p><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In the marketing world, this is called a <b>customer persona</b>. Starting with a customer persona, helps you figure out exactly who your product or service is for, and allows you to be very specific in your targeting. </p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This helps you in two ways:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">1. It makes it easier for you to create marketing campaigns, both from defining your audience and targeting and writing the copy (text) of the ad.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">2. It allows you to test your assumptions and see if your target persona actually is interested in what you offer.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>So, what is needed in a persona?</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"> One way to think about it, is that you want to build a persona that is so detailed that you can actual picture that person in your head. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It might be someone that you actually know in real life, or if you already have customers it may be modeled off of your most ideal customers.</p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/637c16e7-89e9-4df4-bff9-ea66047935b7/8f005b08078cf47edbf79e1a1933c8b8.jpeg"/></div><h2 class="heading" style="text-align:left;"><b>Persona example </b></h2><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Let’s give another example of a persona for a new eCommerce store selling female clothing. Since we’re just starting out, we don’t have any previous customers we can base this upon, so we have to come up with our personas. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">When thinking about a persona, there are a few fields that we need to define, and the more of these fields we have, the easier it will be for us to test. The ones that I recommend are:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">· <b>Name </b>(a random name generated to make the person seem real)</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">· <b>Gender </b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">· <b>Age</b> (an age range of +/- 5 years is fine too)</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">· <b>Location</b> (if you are active in multiple places, could be a country, city or neighborhood)</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">· <b>Occupation</b> (not always necessary, but can give more context into who you’re targeting)</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">· <b>Likes and dislikes </b>(these can be directly related to the product, or can be more generic. We’ll talk about how to tie these into your messaging)</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">· <b>How they would use your product/ service</b> (this is the typical use case, that is related to their likes / dislikes, which is either what the gain is that they want to get or what pain are they avoiding).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The following is an example of what a customer persona would look like:</p><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Name</b>: Sarah</p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Age</b>: 28</p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Location</b>: Dubai</p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Occupation</b>: Event Manager</p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Likes</b>: Event Management, Concerts, Fashion Shows, Art</p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Dislikes</b>: Common Fashion, Bad Quality, Expensive Retail</p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>How would he/she use your product / service?</b> She would use the product to wear for her casual outings or for normal workdays.</p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Ok so you may have noticed a few things about our customer persona:</p><ol start="1"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>We went very specific</b>. We gave her a name (Sarah), an age, location and occupation. You may think this is going too far, but this actually helps us because it allows us to personalize our messaging in a way that is not possible when we think in generalities (otherwise we would be marketing to an abstract concept and not a real person in our mind).</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Our likes and dislikes are not necessarily tied to the product directly</b>. This was done on purpose to show you two different approaches to think about likes and dislikes. You could go the route of tying it directly to the product, like we did for the likes, or you could make them be based on the behavior of your target customer (which may not be tied directly to your product). Either approach you take helps you personify your customers and allows you to target them in a much more effective way.</p></li></ol><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Now that we have a general idea of our customer persona, we can go about testing to see if this is an actual profile of our customer. </p><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">Your Next Steps</h1><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Think about the customer personas for your product or service. Start with one, but eventually you may have dozens of them. </b></p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">Next Week</h1><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Once you have your customer persona, you need to think about what stage of awareness your prospects are at. That&#39;s what we&#39;ll be covering next. </p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=dff686f6-a9fd-4061-8815-055268f53436&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=timeless_learning">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

</style><div class='beehiiv__body'><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Hey friends,</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Earlier, I covered how to come up with a product or service to sell online. In this post, I&#39;ll be going over how to do <b>market sizing: the digital way</b>.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">One of the first things that people typically think about when they&#39;re thinking of a new product or service to focus on is to think about the total market size. MBA&#39;s refer to this as the <b>Total addressable market</b> (TAM).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">While doing regular market sizing is no simple task, there is an easy and quick way to get a rough estimate of your market size using digital tools.</p><hr class="content_break"><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/50162b80-3019-48a5-a313-d82f18e29568/95c974342f6bc0557d2f30934b215c8e.png"/></div><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">Search Traffic</h1><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The easiest way to do get started on seeing demand for a product or service is to see what people are actually searching for<b> </b>on search engines. The easiest way is to go to <b>Google Keyword Planner</b> and see the number of searches per month for that category of keyword.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">To do this simply:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">1) Create an account on <a class="link" href="https://ads.google.com/home/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-do-digital-market-sizing" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">https://ads.google.com/home/</a></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">2) Once you do the initial setup (they won&#39;t charge you, but you may need to enter some billing information), under the menu, click on the <b>Keyword Planner </b>option (this will be under the Tools & Settings -&gt; Planning Section).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">3) Type in the category or product / service you want to get search data on and it will give you an estimated number of monthly searches for that cluster of words. This search data, which can be split by country, gives you a rough estimate of how many times people might be searching for what you plan on offering. </p><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If you have a new account and didn&#39;t spend any money on ads yet, it may show you a range, instead of the actual number (for example, instead of showing you &quot;700&quot; monthly searches, it may show you &quot;500-1,000&quot; monthly searches)</p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/2fea9bfa-0f3e-4ebf-a73a-60482c639f5c/d2ff2845b2945c2bf63c182201a942d2.png"/></div><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">Demographic Data from Ad Platforms</h1><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Like it or not, nearly everyone online has some kind of social media presence, and also like it or not that social media presence is open to advertise against for all major ad platforms.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">As a business owner or marketer, this gives you a great chance to look into the actual demographic data that is gathered, which combines data entered by users (such as their date of birth, country of origin, where they studied, where they live etc.), and data gathered based on their online behavior (such as if they are engaged shoppers, or if they&#39;re interested in certain topics).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">To get started with this, all you have to do is sign up for any of the ad platforms on the internet and use their build in ad planner tool to look at their demographic data.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Facebook / Instagram</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><a class="link" href="https://www.facebook.com/advertising?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-do-digital-market-sizing" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">https://www.facebook.com/advertising</a></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Since Facebook bought Instagram, it is the most powerful tool for demographic data since</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">1) It has the most data across all of its platforms (Facebook, Instagram, FB messenger, WhatsApp and their own ad network).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">2) It asks their users for a ton of data (for their Facebook, Instagram, and other profiles)</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">To do market sizing on any of the platforms I&#39;ll be discussing, just go to the section that says <b>Create Ad</b> and usually in the first step you&#39;ll get to define your audience, which lets you see the audience size. You can then see your audience size by filtering by either:</p><ol start="1"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Interests:</b> These are things that your audience is interested in. This is usually determined from the pages and people they follow. For example, if someone follows tennis news, and tennis players, the platform will tag them as someone that is interested in tennis.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Demographics</b>: This is any info gathered about your audience that can pinpoint their profile. Usually this is taken from data that a user enters. For example, their date of birth, martial status, occupation, country, city etc.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Behavior:</b> These are actions that are taken on or tied to the ad platform (for example if someone recently moved houses it would track that by seeing that they changed their commonly used IP address).</p></li></ol><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">One you specify what kind of profile you&#39;re looking for, the platform will tell you what is the size of the audience, which in this case we can use to determine how many potential customers we can get that fit that profile.</p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/4d92aaed-0fb8-46ac-b69d-f7907fa2ca0f/ecc51d86b299fcd3c94b641e9f7eaaa6.png"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If you want dig even deeper, you can go through the same steps on the other social platforms below to get similar results.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>LinkedIn</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><a class="link" href="https://business.linkedin.com/marketing-solutions/ads?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-do-digital-market-sizing" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">https://business.linkedin.com/marketing-solutions/ads</a></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">LinkedIn is the best tool to look for demographic data if you&#39;re selling to professionals or if you&#39;re a B2B business, since it is the place that people most update their working experience (it works best when you use the filters for job titles and work history).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Twitter</b></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><a class="link" href="https://ads.twitter.com/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-do-digital-market-sizing" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">https://ads.twitter.com/</a></p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Twitter gives you some demographic data, but it&#39;s mainly contextual (which means that its info is more related to the content they consume rather than pure demographic data). </style><div class='beehiiv__body'><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Hey friends,</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">In my last post, I went over the different ways to make money online. Today, I want to go over how to brainstorm what to sell. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If you want to start selling something online, and are unsure of where to start, here are 5 practical techniques you can use to come up with ideas to work on, whether that be selling a product or a service.</p><hr class="content_break"><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/b9d0d16c-87be-4f2b-8049-d87e1aa2fe75/35b6f3ae76cd77125a7318ced33e53df.jpeg"/></div><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">1) Your Pain</h1><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/68e77de8-d69e-4306-a4d7-da02ecda37af/a0abf47ebd4cc3210e9cc04a2a3fe3eb.png"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The first place to start is to think about something in your own life that you would want to exist. This could be:</p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">A product or service you wish existed. Did you ever search for something you wanted to buy online, and not find it? </p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Something you wish could have been done better. Think about the last thing you bought online and what could have been better about it. </p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Think of a negative experience you constantly have in your personal or work life. What is something that you do frequently that could be optimized? (think about or ask your friends what is something you constantly complain about)</p></li></ul><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">2) Using Data</h1><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/785fb795-1ff2-465e-a454-cadd3aa78c15/6822a5d28a66f1dbc270c9b07213d909.png"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It&#39;s easier to swim with the tide than against it. It&#39;s easier to sell something people want than to force them to be interested in something. That&#39;s where using data comes in. There are a ton of places for you to look for trends, to see what people are currently looking for.</p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><a class="link" href="https://trends.google.com/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-come-up-with-things-to-sell" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Google Trends</a>. This is a free tool to let you explore what are the most popular Google searches people are making. You can filter by location and category to get an idea of the types of products and services people are currently interested in (You just need to go to the <b>Explore</b> tab to filter by location and search type)</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><a class="link" href="https://www.google.com/shopping?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-come-up-with-things-to-sell" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Google Shopping</a>. This is where Google shows brands that are spending money on ads to advertise products people can buy online through Google shopping ads.</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><a class="link" href="https://www.facebook.com/ads/library?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-come-up-with-things-to-sell" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Facebook Ads Library</a>. This is a tool that lets you see what kind of ads other companies and organizations are running. This is a good way to get inspiration and see what others are selling.</p></li></ul><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Since Google and Facebook alone account for the vast majority of ads running online, just looking at those two channels will give you the best indication of user demand.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/a607e270-a460-41a9-a6a8-856b999a8adb/e5ef498e6a80b779a2cf1552a3a30be5.png"/></div><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">3) Water Holes</h1><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/5cbbb506-6280-4b15-9c32-0d9f8b6675b2/35a7f1a68c59cefe170c1b7a8f01d26f.png"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Probably the biggest mistake I&#39;ve seen by aspiring entrepreneurs is asking people what they should create. They usually do this by having them fill out questionnaires or surveys.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">This is a bad way of doing customer validation. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Why? Because if you ask someone if they would buy something, bias could creep in.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Either:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">1) They would be too honest with you and make you feel discouraged (telling you how it&#39;s a horrible idea and would never work).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">or</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">2) They would tell you it&#39;s a great idea when they don&#39;t really like it (people are sometimes too nice).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">So what do you do?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The best way to validate a business is to start selling, and see if there is demand. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">But what if you&#39;re not ready for that?</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The next best way is to see what people are discussing online in their natural habitat or &quot;<a class="link" href="https://stackingthebricks.com/cant-find-audience/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-come-up-with-things-to-sell" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">water holes</a>&quot;. This can be on social media, blogs, forums, groups (Facebook, Slack, Whatsapp etc). </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">For example, you could go on parenting forums, Facebook groups etc. and see what issues parents are facing, and build a product or service around that. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">4) You&#39;re the Product (or Service)</h1><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/e57acfc9-73b2-4132-95ea-9c4536301203/acc6e931e2b4844cfde421ee5e50442d.png"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The movie <i>Catch Me If You Can</i> follows the real life story of Frank Abagnale, one of the most famous con men in history. As a teenager in high school, he starting teaching a French class for weeks, despite not knowing French! When he was asked how he did it, he answered &quot;I just had to be one chapter ahead&quot;.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Think about how that applies to your life and profession. If you want to teach others something, or offer a product or a service to any skill you have, you don&#39;t have to be an &quot;expert&quot;. You just have to be one step (or one chapter) ahead of whoever you are teaching.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I&#39;m sure that all of you reading this could teach me about something that I don&#39;t know. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Whether that be accounting, painting, fitness, or knitting, everyone has something they know better than the average person. Think about that skill and then you can package it either as a service you offer, or a virtual product (read <a class="link" href="https://www.timelessdigitalfeed.com/issues/how-to-make-money-online-262310?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-come-up-with-things-to-sell" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">last week&#39;s issue</a> for more on the ways to package your offering).</p><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">5) Flipping</h1><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/de398d5e-f354-4ae0-9719-554abc4962ac/2a08392cf54bf46a886cb1952ddafd51.png"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The idea of flipping is that you take something that you can acquire for a low price (usually a physical item), and then you charge people more for it (known as flipping). This is one that has recently become very popular due to Gary V. Ways to flip things could be:</p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Finding used items and reselling them (things you find around the house, or at second hand shops)</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Geographical arbitrage. Take something that is cheaper in one location and sell it at a higher price somewhere else. </p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Make something better. Refurbish, or clean up items and resell them. You could also take something and customize it in some way (add a design or your own style to something), to transform it enough to make it unique. </p></li></ul><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">Your Next Steps</h1><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>This is the area where I give my recommendations on what to do next to put what we talked about into practice.</b></p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Brainstorm the 5 ways I discussed here, and try coming up with ideas in each of them. </style><div class='beehiiv__body'><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Hey friends,</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">For years, I used to wonder what the best way was to make money online. I&#39;ve come up with cool ideas on my own, and working at <a class="link" href="https://astrolabs.com?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-make-money-online" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">AstroLabs</a> I&#39;ve seen hundreds of different ideas that other people have come up with.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">My conclusion is that people (myself included), overcomplicate things.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If you boil it down to its essence or <a class="link" href="https://fs.blog/2018/04/first-principles/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-make-money-online" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">first principles</a>, there are only two main ways to make money online: products or services.</p><hr class="content_break"><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">Products</h1><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/87f4bbd8-e9d2-4922-9ef3-acc3e87e00b9/964c12a095ab987666055a9374f20c79.png"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">A product is something that can be sold multiple times, that typically is independent of your time. Examples of selling products online are:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>1) eCommerce</b>: Selling physical products where you own the inventory (apparel, electronics etc.). This is straightforward, but needs you to think about how to store items, deliver them on your own etc.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>2) Dropshipping eCommerce</b>: Selling physical products where you don&#39;t own the inventory (apparel, electronics etc.) This is typically done where you partner with a supplier (through services like Ali Express) to ship items directly to customers (which usually results in lower margins).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>3) Virtual (Digital) Products</b>: Selling anything that can be downloaded or sent electronically. For example, eBooks, courses, graphics, videos etc. What&#39;s great about virtual products is they don&#39;t need you to worry about inventory and shipping, since it&#39;s all delivered online (an example of this is my <a class="link" href="https://book.timelessdigitalmarketing.com/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-make-money-online" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Digital Marketing book</a>).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>4) SaaS (Software as a service): </b>Next up is software that you charge people for. For example, sending Newsletters through Mailchimp, or Zoom for video calls. This is usually done on a recurring basis (charged monthly or yearly), so although it&#39;s probably the hardest on this list to scale, it&#39;s a very attractive way to make money online. It could also be done on a transaction basis, such as charging platform fees or a % (Patreon, Upwork etc.).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>5) Digital Data / Attention</b>: This involves selling data online. The most common approach is to sell personal data. For small scale companies, this usually involves selling business leads (for examples, what property sites do). For influencers, this could involve selling their audience by doing &quot;shoutouts&quot; for brands, which involves selling &quot;attention&quot;. For larger companies, it could involve selling the option to target their users online (Facebook ads, Google ads etc.)</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"></p><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">Services</h1><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/dac354b0-e068-45aa-890b-3b647b1eb27c/81b6938e0d679c8348dbec42a0fcf12f.png"/></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">A service is something that you offer that is tied to some kind of labor or manual effort. Examples of online service business are:</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>1) Time Based Services:</b> The quickest way to make money online is to sell your time. If you&#39;re a writer, write for others. If you&#39;re a marketer help them market. If you like working out, help people get fit. The issue with this, is that it&#39;s hard to scale your time because you only have a certain number of hours in the day, so your earning potential will be capped. Unless of course you hire people to do the work for you.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>2) Productized Services: </b>This is where you take your service (your time), and try to make it &quot;product like&quot;. The idea here is that you want to charge for your service, but instead of charging on a time basis, you charge for the finished product. For example, if you&#39;re a web developer you don&#39;t charge for billable hours, but instead charge for a finished website.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>3) Drop servicing (hire people): </b>Similar to dropshipping, except for services. The way this works is that you offer a service, but outsource the actual work to someone else. For example, you could create a company that gets customers in need of development work, and outsource the actual work to a freelancer you trust. This might seem like a novel thing, but it&#39;s actually just the very regular business practice of hiring people and using their labor as leverage (I told you people like to complicate things). The main difference between straight up hiring someone versus a drop-servicing model is drop-servicing usually involves freelancers working in other countries, so the risk is minimal (you don&#39;t need to pay a regular fixed salary).</p><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">Products vs Services</h1><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">So which one is better, products or services? Even though there is no one right way, each one has its benefits. For someone working on their own, services are easier to get started with, but products have higher leveraged earning potential, since you aren&#39;t limited by your time.</p><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">Your Next Steps</h1><div class="blockquote"><blockquote class="blockquote__quote"><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>This is the area where I give my recommendations on what to do next to put what we talked about into practice.</b></p><figcaption class="blockquote__byline"></figcaption></blockquote></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Choose a product or service that you could sell online. Even if you’re working full-time, I think everyone can have a side hustle. Think about the different products or services you could sell and choose one to try to make your first $1 on (I found that getting past the barrier of making your first $1 online is the hardest part).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><b>Further reading</b></p><ul><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">There are two articles that I always find myself coming back to when it comes to making money online:</p></li></ul><ol start="1"><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><a class="link" href="https://robwalling.com/2015/03/26/the-stairstep-approach-to-bootstrapping/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-make-money-online" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">The Stairstep Approach to Bootstrapping</a> by Rob Walling</p></li><li><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><a class="link" href="https://nathanbarry.com/wealth-creation/?utm_source=timelesslearning.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=how-to-make-money-online" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">The ladders of wealth creation</a> by Nathan Berry</p></li></ol><h1 class="heading" style="text-align:left;">Next Week</h1><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If you’re still unsure of what to sell, stay tuned for the next edition, where I’ll go over a few practical techniques I recommend to help you come up with ideas on your own!</p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=84a65fbc-b339-4469-9627-35643ef0593c&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=timeless_learning">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>
