Kay Yow Cancer Fund’s 10th Annual Celebration Run Walk!

If you were out at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary on Sunday, you probably noticed the sea of pink and a whole lot of energy. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund marked its 10th Annual Celebration Run Walk, and the milestone event brought together families, survivors, and supporters from all over the Triangle.

The day was about more than just logging miles. It was a celebration of the legacy of Kay Yow, the longtime leader of the NC State Wolfpack women's basketball. Over her career she earned more than 700 wins and a spot in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Even after a breast cancer diagnosis in 1987, she went on to coach the U.S. women’s basketball team to Olympic gold in 1988. Her determination continues to fuel the mission of the fund that carries her name.

Ten years in, the Celebration Run Walk has clearly become a local tradition. From serious runners to parents with strollers, the crowd reflected a community that shows up for one another. And if Sunday was any indication, this event will keep growing right along with the impact it is making in the fight against cancer.

Your Voice, Your Budget Open House!

The Town of Cary will host a Budget Open House on Tuesday, April 7 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Cary Senior Center ballroom, inviting residents to play a direct role in shaping the community’s future. Designed as a drop in event, the open house will give attendees an inside look at how the Town’s budget is built and provide opportunities to share the priorities that matter most for the year ahead. An educational budget presentation will repeat throughout the evening, and departments will host interactive booths where guests can connect with staff, ask questions, and learn more about the services and programs supported by local tax dollars and fees.

Input gathered during the event will help inform the Fiscal Year 2027 budget, which is currently under development and will be recommended to Council this spring by Interim Town Manager Russ Overton. Overton said the annual budget funds essential services such as Police and Fire, parks and greenways, road maintenance, and long term planning efforts, and emphasized that resident feedback helps strengthen both the spending plan and the community. Those unable to attend can watch live coverage on Cary TV, and the Town’s social media channels, and additional opportunities for input will be available through Cary 311, the Public Speaks Out portion of Council meetings, and upcoming budget public hearings.

Restaurant Spotlight: The H-Mart Food Court!

Inside H Mart, the food court is one of the most rewarding casual dining stops in the area. It is bright, bustling, and refreshingly straightforward. You order at the counter, find a table, and within minutes you are digging into Korean fried chicken, bubbling soft tofu stew, hand pulled noodles, or a properly done bowl of jajangmyeon. It is an easy place to visit with friends or family since everyone can choose something different and still sit together.

What sets this food court apart is consistency and depth of flavor. The soups arrive steaming, the portions are generous, and the dishes taste like they are meant to, not watered down for a crowd. A stone bowl bibimbap comes out sizzling, kimbap is neatly rolled and fresh, and the ramen has real body. It is not polished or trendy. It is simply good food served quickly, at a fair price, in a space that feels lively and welcoming.

Compost Workshop Registrations Open!

Registration is now open for Cary’s compost workshops, giving residents the chance to pick up free bagged compost and learn how to successfully manage a backyard bin. Held at Cary’s historic Good Hope Farm from March 6 to 9, these hands on classes provide participants with guidebooks and expert instruction on turning kitchen scraps into a valuable environmental resource. The workshops are a great way to prepare for spring planting while reducing household waste and supporting sustainability efforts in the community.

Cary Town Council Concludes Annual Staff Meeting

The Cary Town Council and town leadership wrapped up their two day Annual Meeting on February 20 and 21 at the Courtyard Marriott Raleigh Cary, spending time aligning on priorities for the year ahead. 2026 State of Cary Address

Harold Weinbrecht delivered Cary’s annual “State of Cary” address Wednesday morning at the Prestonwood Country Club to members of the Cary Chamber and other local officials. He addressed financial challenges facing the town following the resignation of former Town Manager Sean Stegall at the end of 2025 after an audit identified financial issues. Weinbrecht outlined steps taken to increase transparency, provided an update on the ongoing investigation, and discussed measures aimed at preventing similar problems in the future. Russ Overton is serving as interim town manager.

Weinbrecht compared the town’s response to the financial issues to cleaning up an oil spill, saying the process could take weeks or months as officials work to identify and address remaining concerns. He also highlighted progress made in 2025, noting the town received about 40 awards and recognitions. Updates included developments in sports and entertainment venues, efforts to expand mixed-income housing options, initiatives to attract more businesses to downtown Cary, and continued planning despite minimal population growth.

Restaurant Spotlight: Mezcalito!

Mezcalito is a Mexican restaurant on Walnut Street offering a menu that blends traditional Mexican dishes with Tex Mex favorites. The menu includes tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, burritos, ceviche and molcajete, along with house-made dips and appetizers. A full bar features tequila and mezcal selections, margaritas, cocktails, beer and wine.

New Citizen-Science Project in Downtown Cary

Downtown Cary Park has launched Cary’s first Chronolog, a citizen-science photo station that invites visitors to help document seasonal changes in the park’s landscape. Installed along the walkway between the lower pond and The Walker building, the four-by-four post includes a small platform where guests can place their phones, follow posted instructions, and upload a photo. Each image is automatically added to a continuously updated, crowd-sourced time-lapse that captures how the park’s plants, wildlife, and scenery evolve through different seasons and weather conditions. Since its installation, the project has collected 85 photos from 73 contributors, with no planned end date.

The Chronolog focuses on the ecosystem of the park’s lower pond, particularly the growth of native American lotus, or Nelumbo lutea. The fast-growing aquatic plant plays an important role in water quality by absorbing excess nutrients from stormwater before it reaches the Walnut Creek drainage system, helping reduce algae growth and improve clarity. The lotus also shades the water to keep it cooler and provides habitat for invertebrates that help control mosquito populations. Because the plant spreads quickly through runners and tubers, Cary’s horticulture team manages the colony each year, and tracking its growth over time is a key goal of the new installation.

Diavolo Disc Golf Course Named Most Popular in NC!

Cary, NC. Diavolo at New Hope, a 22-hole disc golf course in Cary, has been named the most popular disc golf course in North Carolina for 2025 by UDisc! Opened in October 2020, the course spans 48 acres and has quickly earned national and international recognition, ranking as high as No. 7 on UDisc’s World’s Best Disc Golf Courses list and currently sitting at No. 17 worldwide. The course has also hosted major tournaments, including the 2024 Tim Selinske United States Masters and the BODYARMOR State Games Disc Golf Championship.

The recognition reflects a long-standing partnership between the Town of Cary and the Capital Area Disc League, with the project originally approved through the Town’s 2012 Community Investment Bond. Designed by Capital Area Disc League President Jay Pontier and Cary Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources staff member Mike Sink, the course features multiple tee options across 22 holes to accommodate players of all skill levels. Its design incorporates a mix of open and wooded terrain, water features, and sections along the American Tobacco Trail greenway, helping establish Diavolo at New Hope as a premier disc golf destination for both residents and visitors.

GLOW Returns to Cary for 5th Consecutive Year

GLOW has returned to downtown Cary for its fifth year, bringing a series of light-based pop-up art installations to Academy Street through mid- to late March. The exhibition features seven illuminated works designed to surprise and delight, ranging from a multi-story floral sculpture made of glowing tubes to projected spring flowers on the historic Ivey-Ellington House. Six installations are currently on display, with a seventh scheduled to debut in mid-February as a replacement at the Ivey-Ellington site.

Presented by Academy Street Artwork Projects, GLOW was conceived during the COVID lockdown as a way to encourage residents to get outdoors and connect through art. This year’s exhibition launched with the Under the Silver Moon community lantern parade in Downtown Cary Park, where nearly 1,200 participants marched with handmade lanterns. Town of Cary Public Art Program Supervisor Denise Dickens said the project aims to brighten the darkest days of winter and create lasting memories for the community.

Town Updates

New Annual Prescribed Burn

Cary will conduct its annual prescribed burn at Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve sometime between now and April 2026, weather permitting, as part of the Town’s long-term fire management plan. The burn will be carried out and supervised by North Carolina State Parks, with logistical support from Cary staff and a Cary fire truck on site throughout the operation. While short sections of select trails may be temporarily closed during the burn, the preserve will remain open, and closures will be clearly signed and monitored by staff to ensure public safety.

Prescribed burns are a proven wildfire prevention tool that reduce excess vegetation, support fire-adapted ecosystems, and improve wildlife habitat. Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve is a registered State Natural Area, and Cary continues to invest in professional fire management practices to protect both natural resources and nearby structures. Previous prescribed burns at the preserve have been completed safely and without incident, reinforcing the Town’s ongoing commitment to responsible environmental stewardship.

Town Operations Return to Normal Today

Cary is moving back toward normal operations following Winter Storm Gianna, with most town services resuming Tuesday, February 3. Cary Town Hall and all staffed facilities will reopen, and the Citizen’s Convenience Center will open at 8 a.m. Curbside collection will run one day late this week, and residents are asked to keep carts off the street when possible to allow crews to finish clearing remaining icy areas.

Transit services will also begin scaling back in. GoCary service ended at 5 p.m. Monday, February 2, and will resume at 10 a.m. Tuesday for fixed routes and Tier 1 Door to Door service. Tier 2 and Tier 3 Door to Door service will remain suspended. While conditions have improved, drivers should still watch for slick spots, especially on shaded roads, bridges, and neighborhood streets. Town crews will continue monitoring problem areas as Cary wraps up its storm response.

Wake County Returns to School Virtually on Wednesday Amid Black Ice Concerns

Wake and Durham county schools will shift to remote learning Wednesday due to concerns about black ice on area roads. District leaders say the decision is aimed at keeping students, staff, and bus drivers safe as temperatures remain below freezing.

Parents acknowledged the move can be inconvenient but largely supported the call. School officials noted that even delays would still put buses on potentially icy roads across large, complex transportation networks. A Second Winter Storm is Coming

Cary is preparing for another round of winter weather, with snow and bitter cold expected to begin late Friday and continue through the weekend. Town crews are already brining roads, and Cary will move to full Snow Command at 6 p.m. Friday, operating around the clock. Once snow reaches 1 inch, plowing will begin, starting with major roads, then neighborhood streets, and finally cul-de-sacs. Private parking lots, including apartments, condos, and shopping centers, will not be treated.

Some town services will be impacted. The Citizen’s Convenience Center will be closed Saturday and Sunday. Residents are urged to prepare now, limit travel during the storm, and avoid parking on streets so plows can work safely. Power outages are possible, and officials recommend charging devices and staying informed through town updates and ReadyWake alerts.

What Cary residents should know

Roads are plowed in this order: main roads, neighborhood streets, through-streets, then cul-de-sacs
Do not park on streets during the storm since it slows plowing
Stay home if possible and never pass active plow trucks
Prepare for up to five days of cold weather, including food, medicine, and pet supplies
Protect pipes by dripping faucets, opening sink cabinets, and knowing your water shutoff valve
Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia, especially among vulnerable neighbors
Power outages are possible, so charge devices and report outages to your utility provider
Use 911 for emergencies and report slick roads or downed trees to Cary 311

Loose Leaf Collection Ending & Highlights

The Town of Cary has completed its annual loose leaf collection season, collecting and composting approximately 9,500 tons of leaves between November and January as part of its ongoing sustainability efforts. In 2025, Cary diverted a total of 23,609 tons of organic material through composting programs, representing 33 percent of all waste collected townwide and including yard waste, loose leaves, and food waste from drop off sites. Leaf collection by request will continue at no charge through March 31, 2026, and residents can also take part in newly opened compost giveaway workshops that provide locally made compost along with practical guidance for composting at home.

Chinese Lantern Festival Wraps Up Record Year

Clean-up is getting underway at Koka Booth Amphitheater in Cary after the North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival wrapped up its 10th season, and organizers say it was another record-breaking year. More than 249,000 people attended the festival, which featured hundreds of handcrafted lanterns lighting up the venue over the course of the season.

Visitors came from all 50 states and eight different countries, with 22 nights completely sold out. Organizers say the festival will return to Koka Booth Amphitheatre in November, bringing an entirely new collection of lanterns for guests to enjoy once again.

The Soccer Tournament (TST) 2026 Dates Set!

The Soccer Tournament will return to WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary earlier than usual in 2026 because of the World Cup. The 7v7 event runs from May 27 through June 1 and features $1 million winner-take-all prizes for both the men’s and women’s divisions. Pre-sale tickets go on sale Feb. 24 at 9 a.m. The state has awarded a $6.8 million grant to keep the tournament in Cary through 2029. Last year, Bumpy Pitch FC and the U.S. Women won their divisions, each taking home $1 million.

Cary Preps for Winter Weather

Cary is preparing for a possible winter storm this weekend as a winter storm watch remains in effect for the area. Town crews have already begun brining main and secondary roads and will continue pretreating streets through Friday. Cary has more than 3,000 tons of salt on hand and hundreds of staff ready to respond if snow or ice develops. If at least one inch of snow falls, crews will clear roads in priority order, starting with major roads and moving into neighborhoods. Private parking lots, including those at apartments and businesses, will not be treated.

Residents are encouraged to prepare now for potential power outages, slick roads, and downed tree limbs. Officials recommend stocking food, medications, and pet supplies for three to five days, charging phones and backup power banks, and knowing how to shut off water in case of frozen or broken pipes. Cars should not be parked on streets so plows can pass. Downed trees or limbs should be reported to Cary 311, not handled by residents, especially if power lines may be involved. Power outages should be reported directly to utility providers. Residents are also urged to check on neighbors, stay off roads during severe weather, and follow Town of Cary updates on social media or at carync.gov for the latest information.

Restaurant Spotlight: Brecotea!

If you live in Cary and have spent any time around Kildaire Farm Road, you have probably seen Brecotea buzzing with people coming and going. It is one of those spots that works for just about any time of day. You can stop in for a quick breakfast pastry, meet a friend for tea in the afternoon, or grab something sweet on the way home. The display cases are always full of fresh breads, cakes, and pastries, and the drink menu covers everything from classic coffee to bubble tea and fruit teas.

What really makes Brecotea feel like a neighborhood favorite is how easy it is to settle in. Potential Winter Storm This Weekend

Cary could see a major winter storm this weekend, according to the latest National Weather Service forecasts. Snow is expected to begin late Friday night, with steadier snowfall developing Saturday and continuing into Sunday. Temperatures are forecast to stay at or below freezing through the entire period, creating conditions favorable for accumulating snow and icy roads.

Forecasters say travel could become hazardous as snowfall increases Saturday and persists into Sunday night. There is also a chance of a wintry mix late Sunday, which could worsen road conditions. Residents are encouraged to prepare for possible disruptions and to monitor official weather updates as the storm approaches.

I highly recommend checking out North Carolina’s Weather Authority. This is run by another NC State grad and he is the only person I’d trust with forecasts in NC!

Biennial Citizen Satisfaction Survey

The Town of Cary is launching its 2026 Biennial Citizen Satisfaction Survey, with researchers calling about 400 randomly selected households beginning January 12. The 20-minute telephone survey will ask residents about topics such as taxes, customer service, and town programs and initiatives. Conducted every two years since 1998, the survey helps Town Council and staff understand community priorities and measure how well Cary is meeting residents’ needs. Residents who receive a call are encouraged to participate.

Cary will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during Dreamfest 2026, taking place January 16–19, with a weekend of events centered on this year’s theme, “The Beloved Community: Honoring Dignity and Uplifting Humanity.” The annual celebration brings the community together through a variety of meaningful and engaging activities designed to reflect Dr. King’s vision of unity, service, and justice.

Dreamfest events include an art exhibition, an Interfaith Service, the 5K Walk for Hope, and the Village Dining and Discussion community dinner featuring an interactive learning experience. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Closures

Town Hall and most staffed facilities in Cary will be closed Monday, January 19, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with curbside collection delayed by one day and the Citizen’s Convenience Center closed. GoCary will run fixed routes on a Sunday schedule, Cary 311 will be closed for calls (online requests remain available), and while most parks stay open, community centers, The Cary Theater, and Stevens Nature Center will be closed. Cary’s annual Dreamfest, celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., runs January 16–19, with most events free and open to the public.

2026 Lunar New Year Spectacular

Cary Art Daze Grant Recipients!

Cary just announced the 2026 Cary Art Daze Grant recipients, and it’s a big year for local creativity. Twenty-two nonprofit organizations will receive funding to bring arts-focused programs and events to the community, from music and dance to storytelling and visual arts. The grants are powered by the success of Cary’s beloved Lazy Daze and Spring Daze Arts & Crafts Festivals and are designed to help programs that inspire, connect, and enrich residents of all ages.

Final Loose Leaf Collection Starts NOW!

Cary kicked off its final town-wide loose-leaf collection sweep yesterday, marking the last pass of the season. As crews move through neighborhoods, residents are encouraged to prepare leaf piles carefully by keeping them clear of sidewalks, storm drains, fire hydrants, mailboxes, and parked cars. Making sure piles are free of trash, rocks, and other debris helps crews work safely and keeps collections running smoothly.

It may not be too late: Check out this interactive map to see when your collection will start.

Once the final sweep is complete, residents can still request leaf pickup at no charge by contacting Cary 311 between February 9 and March 31, 2026. After that date, additional requests will require a fee. Leaves placed in reusable containers or brown paper bags can also be set out with weekly yard waste, and yard waste is accepted year-round at the Citizen’s Convenience Center on North Dixon Avenue. Collected leaves are composted, helping support Cary’s sustainability efforts.

Community Garden Applications Now Open!

The Community Garden lottery is now open, giving residents the opportunity to grow their own food while learning more about gardening at the Carpenter and McCrimmon Community Gardens. Garden plots are available for an eleven-month term at a cost of $50 for either a standard or ADA-accessible plot, while McCrimmon Community Garden also offers smaller perimeter beds for $25 for the same term.

All garden beds include convenient access to watering hoses, shared tools stocked in an on-site garden shed, and educational materials to help gardeners succeed throughout the season. Interested participants can sign up through the Community Garden lottery application.

V Pizza in Cary, NC is one of those places you end up recommending to everyone without even thinking about it. Cary Snow Globes Available!

Cary Snow Globes are now available, and they are pretty great. This limited-edition snow globe captures the charm of downtown Cary with the iconic Cary cardinals and the Downtown Cary Park landscape. It is a brand-new keepsake this year and a Cary-branded collectible that brings a little local pride and seasonal nostalgia into your home. You can order one now at shop.carync.gov or pick one up in person at Downtown Cary Park, Koka Booth Amphitheatre, Herb Young Community Center, or the Cary Arts Center.

Davis Drive Park Renovations

Davis Drive Park is a popular West Cary spot with playgrounds, soccer fields, a shaded picnic area, a basketball court, and access to the White Oak Creek Greenway via a paved half-mile trail. Upcoming renovations beginning December 1 will affect several amenities:

Playground and picnic shelter will close December 1 and reopen in spring 2026
Restrooms will close starting December 1 and again January 19–24
Basketball court will remain open on a first come, first served basis

Photos with Santa

Step into a winter wonderland and make the season merry and bright with Photos with Santa. The park will be transformed into a festive setting filled with twinkling lights and holiday decorations, creating the perfect backdrop for family photos with Santa Claus. Bring the whole family, strike a pose with the jolliest man in red, and enjoy a magical holiday experience that captures the joy of the season.

Please note that Santa is very popular, and wait times may occur. To ensure everyone has an opportunity to participate, the line to meet Santa may close approximately 30 minutes before 9 p.m., depending on crowd size. Cary Tennis Park has been named Municipal Facility of the Year by Racquet Sports Industry magazine, earning the national recognition for the second time. The 24-acre complex draws more than 300,000 visitors each year and hosts over 20 sanctioned tournaments annually, making it a major destination for tennis and pickleball players across the region. The park has previously received several national honors, including the U.S. Tennis Association’s Featured Facility Award in 2019 and both the USTA Outstanding Facility Award and RSI’s Municipal Facility of the Year in 2006.

Town Council Appoints Russ Overton as Interim Cary Town Manager

Following the resignation of Sean Stegall, Cary Town Council has appointed Deputy Town Manager Russ Overton to serve as interim town manager, effective immediately. Overton joined the Town of Cary in 1998 as an engineer and moved into town administration in 2013, later being named assistant town manager and then deputy town manager in 2017.

Upcoming WCPSS Budget Cut

Wake County school leaders are getting an early look at what the 2026–27 budget might bring, and the preview isn’t exactly encouraging. During a board retreat on Wednesday, members walked through a new financial outlook that suggests the district may have to prepare for significant cuts next year.

Town Updates

Street Closure on Saturday

Downtown Cary will see several streets shut down this Saturday as the Cary Jaycees Christmas Parade makes its return. The event begins at 2 p.m. on December 13, but road closures will start an hour earlier and last until 5 p.m.

Drivers can expect portions of Academy Street, E. Chatham Street, and Dry Avenue to be blocked off, along with a few nearby sections. Detours will be in place throughout the afternoon.

Free Light Ride!

GoCary is offering a festive, fare-free way to enjoy downtown Cary this season with a special holiday version of its Downtown Loop. The route will feature “light-seeing” rides on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning December 2 and running through December 23, with no reservations required. Riders can board at any of the 13 stops to experience decorated buses, holiday music, and views of the Heart of the Holidays displays and activities. Free parking is available at Town Hall near a convenient stop, and the Downtown Loop will also continue operating on its regular Thursday through Sunday schedule during this period.

Downtown Cary was filled with holiday cheer this past weekend as hundreds of residents gathered for the town’s annual tree lighting celebration at Downtown Cary Park. The event featured festive music, colorful light displays, and a special appearance from Santa Claus, who delighted children and families alike. Attendees explored vendor booths offering hot cocoa, seasonal crafts, and local gifts, creating a cheerful holiday market atmosphere. The Great Lawn served as the heart of the celebration, with food trucks parked nearby and families spreading out on blankets to enjoy the sights.

The highlight of the evening came just after sunset when Mayor Harold Weinbrecht led a countdown to illuminate the towering holiday tree. A Stars Hollow Christmas Market is bringing some small town holiday magic to downtown Apex on Saturday, December 13, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Hosted at 106 W Chatham Street, the event is a love letter to Gilmore Girls, inviting fans and holiday shoppers alike to sip Luke’s coffee, browse Rory’s Bookshelf for mystery finds, and shop from more than 25 local handmade artists and vintage vendors. The market also features coffee infused baked goods, hand illustrated Stars Hollow maps, themed gifts including apparel and glassware, and a pop up Luke’s coffee shop for anyone ready to try a Sookie inspired treat.

The day includes custom hand drawn portraits of attendees in Stars Hollow style by Leanne Renée and Gilmore Girls trivia kicking off at 2 p.m., giving fans a chance to test their knowledge.
