Trump Accounts: Can They Help Close America’s Wealth Gap?

Trump Accounts, launching July 4, aim to boost long-term wealth building for U.S. children by providing tax-deferred investment accounts seeded with government and private funds.

Eligible children born between 2025 and 2028 will receive a one-time $1,000 Treasury deposit. The funds will be invested in U.S. stock funds, primarily tracking the top 500 companies. Additional contributions may come from employers, philanthropists, and a $6.25 billion pledge from Michael Dell and his wife targeting lower-income families.

Limited Reach So Far
Nearly 6 million children — about 40% of eligible kids — have been signed up as of late May. However, experts worry participation among low-income families remains low due to the opt-in process tied to tax filing.

“Low-income households that owe no federal income tax often don’t file, leaving out the children who need it most,” according to an Urban Institute report.

Challenges to Closing the Wealth Gap
Even with seed money, disparities are expected to persist. Wealthy families are more likely to add regular contributions, potentially growing accounts to hundreds of thousands by age 30. Low-income children may end up with far less — around $2,500 without extra deposits.

Critics argue automatic enrollment would be more effective at ensuring broad participation. Without it, higher-income families are likely to benefit disproportionately.

While Trump Accounts represent a step toward broader access to stock market investing, experts say they may not significantly narrow the wealth gap unless enrollment barriers are reduced and sustained contributions are encouraged.

The program highlights ongoing challenges in U.S. wealth inequality, where the top 10% hold over 87% of equities and mutual funds.

President Donald Trump announced Thursday that the U.S. has reached a "great settlement" to end the war with Iran, subject to final document formalization, with a signing expected in the "next few days."

He canceled planned U.S. military strikes against Iran, stating that talks had been approved at the highest levels. Trump also said the Strait of Hormuz would reopen once the deal is signed, while maintaining the naval blockade until finalization.

Iranian Response: Iranian state media (Fars) reported that the U.S. had accepted Iran's proposed text but that Tehran had not yet given final approval, describing Trump's announcement as a tactical retreat.

Oracle Falls Despite a Beat

Oracle shares dropped 8% after the company announced plans to raise an additional $20 billion in capital and reported negative free cash flow of $23.7 billion for the fiscal year.

Although Oracle beat earnings expectations, reporting revenue of $19.18 billion and adjusted earnings per share of $2.03, investors remain concerned about the company's heavy spending on AI infrastructure.

Capital expenditures surged 162% to $55.7 billion, and Oracle expects net capital spending to reach about $70 billion in fiscal 2027. The company plans to raise a total of $40 billion through debt and equity financing.

Despite the concerns, Oracle maintained its fiscal 2027 revenue target of $90 billion and raised its earnings forecast to $8.05 per share. Cloud infrastructure revenue grew 93% to $5.8 billion, while remaining performance obligations increased 363% to $638 billion.

Analysts remain divided, with some viewing Oracle’s AI investments as a long-term growth opportunity despite short-term pressure on cash flow and profitability.

Adobe beats: Adobe, the company behind Photoshop, Acrobat, and Creative Cloud, beat expectations and raised its full-year outlook after the close. yet, it had a horrible day.

The stock fell 5.8% after hours, adding to a 6.2% decline during the regular session. The numbers themselves were solid: adjusted EPS came in at $5.96 versus $5.82 expected, revenue reached $6.62 billion versus $6.45 billion expected, and full-year guidance was lifted to $26.5–$26.6 billion.

The issue wasn’t performance. It was perception.

Adobe remains highly profitable, continues to grow, and is actively returning capital through buybacks. But investors are increasingly focused on a bigger question: does AI strengthen Adobe’s dominance, or does it gradually erode the value of its bundled software model?

The recent CFO departure has only amplified concerns around leadership and long-term positioning, turning what should have been a strong quarter into a story about uncertainty.

SpaceX IPO Explained: Fixed $135 Price Set, Retail Gets Big Slice

SpaceX is set to launch its highly anticipated IPO on Thursday with a fixed share price of $135, skipping the traditional price range and book-building process. The move gives investors a “take it or leave it” offer at a massive $1.77 trillion valuation.

The rocket company plans to stop accepting orders on Wednesday to allow more time for share allocation on Thursday. Trump Announces Iran Deal "Largely Negotiated," Strait of Hormuz to Reopen

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that a major agreement with Iran has been “largely negotiated,” following talks with Middle East leaders. However, he also asked negotiators not to rush' into deal with Iran.

The deal, which is still being finalized, includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, ending current hostilities, and establishing a framework for further negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.

Trump emphasized that the agreement aims to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons and will include sanctions relief and asset unfreezing.

On Sunday, Trump added that negotiations are proceeding in an “orderly and constructive manner”, stating “time is on our side.”

Date-flation Surge: Millennials Now Spend $252 on Average Date

The cost of dating in America is climbing fast, a phenomenon being called “date-flation.”

According to BMO Financial Group’s 2026 Real Financial Progress Index, the average “all-in” cost of a date — including grooming, transportation, food, drinks, and activities — now stands at $189, up 12.5% from last year. This far exceeds the general inflation rate.

Millennials face the highest tab at $252 per date, up sharply from $191 the previous year. Gen Z follows at $205, while Gen X averages $173 and Baby Boomers $126.

Rising prices are changing behavior. Half of Americans who date say they are going on fewer dates or choosing cheaper options due to the higher cost of living. The average number of dates per year has also dropped from 14 to 12.

The trend is sparking debate over who should pay. 71% of men say they expect to cover the full cost early in a relationship, while 52% of women prefer splitting the bill evenly.

Experts note that economic uncertainty is pushing people toward traditional gender roles.

Mortgage Rates Climb to Highest Level Since July

The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate rose 7 basis points to 6.75% on Tuesday — the highest level since July 31.

Rates have surged 33 basis points in the past 10 days and are now 46 basis points above the April low of 6.29%. The increase follows an earlier spike at the start of the Iran war, when rates jumped from 5.99% in early March to 6.64% by month-end.

Analysts note that bond markets are pressuring politicians to end the conflict, as higher rates threaten housing affordability. For a median $420,000 home with 20% down, monthly principal and interest payments have increased by $167 (from $2,012 to $2,179).

Google revealed its first audio smart glasses, set for release later this year. The glasses, developed in partnership with Samsung, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster, will feature Gemini AI built-in. 529 Plans Remain a Powerful, Underused Alternative to Trump Accounts

Starting July, Trump Accounts (530A accounts) will offer parents a new tax-deferred way to save and invest for their children, with $1,000 “free money” seed deposits from the Treasury for babies born 2025–2028.

However, Certified Financial Planners point out that 529 plans are significantly underutilized — only 23% of parents currently use them — despite major advantages.

Why 529 Plans Are Powerful

• Savings grow tax-free and qualified withdrawals are tax-free.

• Many states offer tax deductions or credits on contributions.

• Expanded uses now include: college, graduate school, vocational programs, apprenticeships, K-12 tuition (up to $20,000/year), tutoring, student loan repayment, and up to $35,000 rollover to a Roth IRA.

US inflation jumps to 3.8% in April, driven by energy and food

U.S. consumer prices rose sharply in April, pushing annual inflation to 3.8%—the largest year-on-year increase in three years.

Energy costs (up 3.8% for the month) accounted for over 40% of the monthly CPI rise after oil and fuel prices surged amid the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran, and gasoline alone jumped 5.4%.

Food costs accelerated too, with grocery prices rising 0.7% and notable jumps in beef, dairy and coffee.

Core inflation (excluding food and energy) also climbed, reflecting higher rents and services: owners’ equivalent rent and hotel rates both increased, and airfare rose on strong jet-fuel demand.

Wages increased 3.6% year-on-year, but pay gains have been outpaced by rising prices for the first time in three years, squeezing household budgets.

The hotter inflation data strengthened expectations that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates elevated into 2027.

Interestingly, traders on Kalshi think inflation will likely rise above 4.5% in 2026. A smaller number believe price increases will breach 5%.

Hims & Hers Falls After a Disappointing Report

Digital health firm Hims & Hers’ stock fell over 14% on weak first-quarter earnings.

The company reported a net loss of $92 million in the first quarter, up from $50 million last year. Its adjusted Ebitda was $44 million, down from $91 million last year. Meanwhile, revenue was up 4% to $608 million. Average monthly revenue per subscriber was $80, down from $85 last year.

Hims is expecting revenue in a range between $680 million and $700 million for the second quarter, and is forecasting up to $3 billion in revenue for the full year.

It forecast adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization up to $55 million for the second quarter, and up to $350 million for the full year.

The company recently reached an agreement with Novo Nordisk to sell its branded weight loss drugs.

The United States and Iran exchanged fire in the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides accusing the other of initiating the confrontation.

U.S. Central Command stated that its forces “intercepted unprovoked Iranian attacks and responded with self-defense strikes” as three Navy destroyers passed through the strategic waterway late Thursday. However, the ceasefire is still in place.

Iran, however, had earlier claimed that the United States violated a fragile ceasefire by carrying out strikes on multiple targets in and around the strait, a critical chokepoint in the ongoing conflict. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump said a U.S. proposal to end the war was more substantial than a “one-page offer,” as Tehran continues to review messages from Washington delivered through Pakistani mediators.

Iranian media report that the government has not yet finalized its response.

How Often Does an Entire Petroleum Basin Open to Public Investors?

Big Names Report

Some major names announced earnings yesterday:

• Cloudflare reported first-quarter earnings that beat analysts’ expectations, but shares fell 18% in extended trading as the company announced a 20% reduction in its workforce. The company highlighted that its use of AI has increased over 600% in the last three months as it embraces “an agentic AI-first operating model.” The company’s Q2 guidance of 27 cents in earnings per share was in line with Wall Street’s expectations. Cloudflare posted a net loss of $22.93 million, a loss of 7 cents per share in Q1 2026. A year ago, the company had a net loss of $38.45 million, a loss of 11 cents per share.

• CoreWeave exceeded analysts’ estimates for revenue in the first quarter, but the forecast for the second quarter came in light. Revenue more than doubled in the quarter, from $981.8 million a year earlier, according to a statement. Net loss widened to $740 million from $315 million, or $1.49 per share, in the same quarter a year ago. CoreWeave is targeting $2.45 billion to $2.6 billion in second-quarter revenue. The middle of the range, $2.53 billion, was trailed the $2.69 billion LSEG consensus. For 2026, CoreWeave maintained its revenue guidance. calling for $12 billion to $13 billion in sales. The company has been raising billions of dollars in debt to finance its data center buildout as it serves the leading AI model developers.

• Coinbase reported a surprise first-quarter loss of $1.49 per share. Analysts had estimated a profit of 27 cents per share, according to LSEG. Revenue also missed expectations. The company, which operates the largest cryptocurrency marketplace in the U.S., posted transaction revenue of $755.8 million versus $805.2 million expected by analysts. Subscription revenue came in at $583.5 million versus $619.3 million estimated. Declines in cryptocurrency prices weighed on Coinbase’s major revenue driver: spot trading in digital assets. While top and bottom line results missed expectations, Coinbase saw promising growth in its diversified offerings, including event contracts and support for trading of crypto derivatives and tokenized real-world assets.

• Airbnb topped Wall Street’s first-quarter revenue estimates but fell short of earnings expectations. The travel company said it experienced “slightly elevated” cancellations across the EMEA and Asia Pacific regions due to the Iran war. Airbnb lifted its full-year revenue growth guidance and said it plans to host its most guests on record for an event during this summer’s FIFA World Cup.

• McDonald’s topped first-quarter earnings and revenue estimates. While McDonald’s has leaned into value to win over diners, same-store sales rose on the strength of customers spending more. CEO Chris Kempczinski said in a statement that McDonald’s delivered a strong quarter, despite “a challenging environment”, warning consumer spending could be ‘getting a little bit worse’.

AMD and Super Micro Report

Some major names announced earnings yesterday:

• Advanced Micro Devices reported first-quarter results that topped analysts’ estimates. For the second quarter, the chipmaker said it expects about $11.2 billion in revenue, beating expectations. In addition to CPUs and GPUs, AMD is also expected to ship its first full rack-scale system for AI data centers, Helios, later this year. It’s meant to rival Nvidia’s Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin systems that sell for upwards of $3 million. Both OpenAI and Meta have already signed up for shipments of Helios, marking AMD’s system as a viable second option for AI giants and hyperscalers scrambling to secure enough compute. The report helped the stock jump 15%.

• Super Micro reported better-than-expected quarterly guidance, despite a revenue miss. The server maker said in March it severed ties with a co-founder who was named in a federal indictment in March. For the fiscal fourth quarter, management called for 65 cents to 79 cents in adjusted earnings per share on $11 billion to $12.5 billion in revenue. The LSEG consensus was for earnings of 55 cents per share and $11.07 billion in revenue. The stock jumped 18% in extended trading.

Surprising EV sale figures: BYD's passenger EV sales fell for an eighth straight month in April, delivering 314,100 new energy vehicles—a 15.7% year-over-year drop but up 6.2% from March—amid intensifying domestic competition. Exports hit a record 135,098 units, up over 70% year-on-year, highlighting growing overseas reliance as Q1 profits plunged 55.4%.

Rivals shone: Leapmotor reached 71,387 deliveries (+73.9%), Zeekr 31,787 (+131.6%), Xiaomi over 30,000 (+7.1%), Nio 29,356 (+22.8%), while Xpeng dipped 11.5% to 31,011.

Spirit Airlines Shuts Down: What Travelers Need to Know

Spirit Airlines has ceased all operations. The ultra-low-cost carrier, known for its bright yellow planes, rock-bottom fares, and à la carte fees, shut down overnight after failing to secure a $500 million government bailout. The collapse ends the airline’s turbulent run and eliminates thousands of cheap flights across the U.S., Latin America, and the Caribbean, while costing roughly 17,000 jobs.

Spirit’s website now displays a message that the airline is “winding down all operations,” replacing its booking platform. The carrier had filed for bankruptcy twice in less than a year and struggled with rising costs, grounded aircraft due to engine issues, a blocked merger with JetBlue, and intensifying competition from legacy carriers offering basic economy fares.

• Direct bookings (credit/debit card): Spirit says it will automatically issue refunds.

• Bookings through travel agencies: Contact the agency for refunds.

• Loyalty points, vouchers, or credits: Reimbursement will be handled later through the bankruptcy process, though experts say recovery odds are very low.

Travelers are advised not to go to the airport, as Spirit’s staff have been laid off and no customer service will be available on-site.

Help from Other Airlines

Several carriers have stepped in to assist displaced passengers, similar to their response during natural disasters:

• JetBlue is capping one-way fares at $99 for affected travelers (proof of Spirit itinerary required; call 1-800-JETBLUE) through May 6. It also capped fares on the Fort Lauderdale–San Juan route.

• Southwest Airlines is capping domestic one-way fares at $200 (up to 500 miles), $300 (up to 1,000 miles), and $400 (longer trips). It is honoring Spirit frequent-flyer status and benefits like early boarding at ticket counters.

Some major names announced earnings yesterday:

• Apple issued a better-than-expected revenue forecast for the current period after beating on sales and earnings in the fiscal second quarter. The stock rose about 5% in extended trading. Sales for iPhones missed estimates for the second time in three quarters, the only significant number that came up short of expectations.

  Here are important figures:

  • iPhone revenue: $56.99 billion vs $57.21 billion expected

  • Mac revenue: $8.4 billion vs. $8.02 billion expected

  • iPad revenue: $6.91 billion vs. $6.66 billion expected

  • Wearables, Home and Accessories revenue: $7.9 billion vs. $7.7 billion expected

  • Services revenue: $30.98 billion vs. $30.39 billion expected

The company said on the earnings call that revenue in the June quarter will increase between 14% and 17% from a year earlier. Analysts were expecting growth of 9.5% to $103 billion.

Also, Apple said its board authorized an additional $100 billion in stock repurchases and declared a cash dividend of 27 cents per share, up 4%.

Sales of iPhones rose 22% in the quarter from a year earlier. Like other consumer electronics companies and device makers, Apple faces supply chain constraints, largely due to the global memory shortage that’s being driven by soaring artificial intelligence demand.

Cook said on the earnings call that the iPhone 17 is now the “most popular lineup in our history” and noted that overall revenue beat guidance “despite supply constraints.”

• Reddit reported first-quarter earnings and revenue that beat analyst estimates. The company said second-quarter sales should come in the range of $715 million to $725 million, while analysts were looking for $712 million. eddit’s daily active unique users, or DAUq, rose 17% year-over-year to 126.8 million for the quarter, ahead of analyst estimates of 125.9 million. Average revenue per user, or ARPU, was $5.23, topping analyst estimates of $4.81. The company’s U.S.-specific ARPU came in at $9.63, ahead of the $8.53 that Wall Street was projecting. Total revenue jumped 69% from a year earlier, continuing a strong trend for online advertising companies after Meta and Alphabet reported their fastest growth in years. The stock went up 8% after the smashing report.

• Eli Lilly reported first-quarter earnings and revenue that blew past estimates, as demand for its blockbuster weight loss drug Zepbound and diabetes treatment Mounjaro spikes. Lilly hiked its full-year sales outlook by $2 billion, and also raised its adjusted profit guidance. The company’s newly approved GLP-1 pill for obesity, Foundayo, launched in the second quarter, so its sales weren’t included in Thursday’s report. A

Trump Administration Finalizes New Federal Student Loan Caps Starting July 2026

The Trump administration has finalized new borrowing limits on federal student loans as part of the Working Families Tax Cuts Act. Starting with loans taken out on or after July 1, 2026, graduate students will be capped at $20,500 per year and $100,000 total for graduate degrees. Students in professional programs (such as medicine, law, dentistry, and others) will face higher limits of $50,000 annually and $200,000 lifetime.

The Graduate PLUS loan program, which previously allowed unlimited borrowing, is being eliminated. Current students are exempt from the new limits for up to three years.

The changes aim to curb excessive student debt and encourage colleges to lower costs, though some programs like nursing and physical therapy are excluded from the professional degree category.
