Once you’ve seen one AI flyer, you’ve kind of seen them all.

A recent Gartner study found that 50% of consumers would prefer to buy from brands that don’t use generative AI in their content.

Another found that 49% of U.S. consumers think AI has made content quality worse. Among Gen Z and millennials, that number jumps to 57%.

Because of this, many small businesses are rejecting AI and deliberately making their marketing look more handmade, more imperfect, and more human.

The way to stand out as a small business in the age of AI is to look less like AI. Use real photos, real people, and handmade visuals.

And whenever you can, support real designers, photographers, and creators.

1. Citations are back, thanks to AI

Citations were on the decline for many years as a local search tactic, but AI search has shot them back into the spotlight.

Here’s your citation playbook for better AI search visibility:

Google your brand and keywords and take note of the business directories that show up.
Do the same on AI chats and take note of the business directories cited.
Use a citation tool to find your existing citations and see your competitors’ citations. I use the Whitespark Local Citation Finder for that.
Get your businesses listed on all those sites (or update if your business is already listed).
Don’t set and forget them! Make sure you update them from time to time to reflect your accurate business information.

2. Google just gave you an incredible keyword research tool

Google Trends has added a new way to explore searches by category, without entering a keyword first. Here’s how it works:

Go to Google Trends
Click Explore
Choose a category from the “All Categories” dropdown
KNOWLEDGE (iykyk)

If you are a plastic surgeon, you might typically start your research with a keyword like “lip filler” and then look for related searches.

Now, you can start with the broader industry category and see what people are already searching for. That means you can uncover keywords and topics you might never have thought to research in the first place.

You can also see how interest in different topics has changed over time and check rising queries to find topics that are taking off right now.

And here’s a tip: Turn those trends directly into ideas for videos, blog posts, social content, FAQs, and service pages.

This is an excellent free source of keyword ideas and timely content opportunities.

This new research on AI search completely changed my perspective.

Bill Widmer tracked more than 13,000 citations across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, and got two very surprising results:

The AI models almost NEVER cite the same sources.
Ranking on page one of Google doesn't seem to correlate with getting cited by AI.

This is in contrast to other studies that concluded that being on page 1 of Google was the key to getting into AI responses.

So, maybe John Mueller’s “Good SEO is good GEO” quote doesn’t hold up?

E47: 13K AI Citations, E-E-A-T Tips & 2026 Local Discovery Index

This new research on AI search completely changed my perspective.

Bill Widmer tracked more than 13,000 citations across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, and got two very surprising results:

1. The AI models almost NEVER cite the same sources.

Being visible in ChatGPT doesn't necessarily mean you're visible in Gemini, Claude, or Perplexity.

This means you can’t just optimize for one AI, you have to adapt your strategy for each.

2. Ranking on page one of Google doesn't seem to correlate with getting cited by AI.

They found that most of the citations were NOT ranking on Google.

This is in contrast to other studies that concluded that being on page 1 of Google was the key to getting into AI responses.

New Research: How Keywords in Business Names Impact Rankings & AI

I think we just discovered something new in local SEO.

We know that keywords in the business name impact rankings on Google Maps, but did you know that where those keywords are placed also has an impact?

We studied 1.4 million businesses and found that business titles that start with keywords correlate with more top-3 rankings across all the industries we looked at.

Basically, if you’re a plumber, it’s better to name your business “Plumbing by Andy” than “Andy’s Plumbing”. GBP names work like your webpage’s title tags.

We also found that businesses tend to pick the second format (it feels more natural, so it makes sense). But if you can find a way to add those valuable keywords at the beginning of your business name, while not making it sound too awkward, you really should!

E46: NEW Google Maps Feature, 1.8M GBP Study & Marketing Personas Guide

You know about Ask Maps. Now say hello to Google’s brand new Tell Maps 👋

Tell Maps is Google’s newest AI feature that allows users to tell Google about a local business (e.g. “this bakery is known for its canelés” or “there is parking in the back”).

If enough people use this feature to tell Google something about your business, Google may pick up on it and use it as a relevance signal in search and AI results.

If you want to be bad, you can also use this feature to tell Google that your competitor is rude and that their services suck. So, we’ll have to see how Google handles sabotage.

1. Google Images is getting a major redesign

When JLo wore that iconic green Versace dress to the Grammys in 2000, so many people searched for photos of it that Google decided to build Google Images.

2. Google’s Local Services Ads will now charge you for leads even if you don’t answer your phone

Last week I got an email saying that starting October 1st, MISSED CALLS from Local Services Ads during business hours can be charged as valid leads if the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds:

And Local Services Ads are not cheap. In personal injury law, you can be paying up to $500 for a single lead.

Not answering your phone was always a bad idea, but now it can cost you thousands of dollars per month.

This update is rolling out soon, so if you’re running LSAs and don’t like donating money to Google, make sure someone is actually picking up those calls.

Connor Corkin on LinkedIn suggested setting incoming call timeouts to <20s before pushing to voicemail as one possible solution to this. See others’ thoughts in the comments.

3. Use this incredible custom AI webpage grader

Google gave us a checklist for what good website content should look like, and Steve Toth turned it into a custom AI webpage grader.

Google’s “Helpful, Reliable, People-First Content Guide” includes 32 questions covering content quality, expertise, people-first content, and warning signs that you’re writing for search engines instead of humans.

Steve took those questions and built a Custom GPT and a Claude Project that will grade any page against them.

When you paste in your page, it gives you:

PASS, FAIL, PARTIAL, or N/A for all 32 questions.
An overall letter grade.
The biggest problems you should fix.
A prioritized roadmap for improving the page.
The option to rewrite the sections that failed.

He compares AI writing to rolling weighted dice:

Every time AI chooses the next word, there are a bunch of words that would all make sense. The watermark uses a secret key to slightly tilt those odds toward certain words.

You won’t notice anything strange when you read it. But across enough text, those word choices create a statistical pattern that is easy to decode.

If you have the key, you can analyze the text later and see whether those preferred words show up more often than they should.

And changing a few words is not enough to remove that signal. You basically have to do a complete rewrite to remove the key.

Google is testing Local Services Ads inside AI Mode

Here’s my local SEO update for the week 👇️

1. ChatGPT fell below 50% market share for the first time since 2022

ChatGPT’s market share just dropped below 50% for the first time since 2022. According to Sensor Tower, ChatGPT crossed that line in March 2026.

ChatGPT’s competitors are stealing market share FAST:

Gemini usage has grown to 27.7%, with more than 1 in 4 people now using it.
And Claude’s US share jumped from 4.4% to nearly 14%.

ChatGPT was basically synonymous with generative AI for the last few years.

But now we’re seeing people spread their searches, questions, and recommendations across multiple AI platforms.

For SEOs and marketers, that means optimizing for “ChatGPT visibility” alone isn’t enough.

You need to be thinking about how your business shows up across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and whatever comes next.

AI search is fragmenting, just like traditional search did, and we’re only at the beginning.

2. Google is testing Local Services Ads directly inside AI Mode answers

Anthony Higman First Shared This News, And He Absolutely Hates It (typed in Higman-case just for him)

Obviously, this kind of sucks. More ads means less space for organic results, and potentially fewer organic leads for businesses that are already fighting for visibility inside AI Mode.

But on the other hand, if your business has no AI visibility, at least you could buy your way in now.

This looks like a limited test at the moment.

But if it rolls out, then the ads will likely start taking away from organic leads in AI Mode results, just like they have in the standard Google results.

Local SEO hack: Use your competitors’ review questions to find out what services Google has suggested for their business (and steal them).

For context, review questions are the additional questions Google asks when you’re leaving a review on a Google Business Profile (what services did you get, was there parking there, etc).

Here’s a cool thing you can do with your competitor’s review questions:

Go to leave a review on your competitor’s GBP and scroll down to the “What services did you get?” question.
Google will give you a list of services to check off.

I have a new local SEO hack for you:

Use your competitors’ review questions to find out what services Google has suggested for their business (and steal them).

Review questions are the additional questions Google asks when you’re leaving a review on a Google Business Profile (what services did you get, was there parking there, etc).

Here’s a cool thing you can do with your competitor’s review questions:

I just got a notification from LinkedIn that I’ve been employed by Whitespark for 21 years now 🤯 Hope they don’t replace me with AI soon.

Here’s my local SEO update for the week 👇️

1. Google removed a dangerous AI feature less than 24 hours after launch

The feature used Nano Banana 2 to let users edit real satellite and 3D imagery in Google Earth with a simple text prompt, which Google originally showed off for things like recreating ancient cities or visualizing new developments.

But users started generating fake floods, bomb craters, refugee camps, and military sites on top of real locations.

Google says the images were watermarked and never appeared publicly in the main Google Earth experience, but screenshots could still be shared online and mistaken for real satellite imagery.

Google has now removed the feature and is working on stronger safeguards. I doubt this will be the last time we see this problem as AI gets built into more products people already trust.

Was Google naive to think people wouldn’t abuse this feature, or did they know, but proceeded to provide it anyway? See the discussion in the LinkedIn comments.

2. Google is turning Maps into an AI agent that can do things for you

With the new Ask Maps experience, you’ll be able to say something like, “Order spicy seafood noodles for me to pick up on my way home.”

Ask Maps can then find restaurants along your route, check what’s open, factor in your preferences, and even add the order to your cart. All you have to do is review the order and pay.

There are two BIG takeaways for local businesses:

1. Saved places on Google Maps matter more:
Ask Maps will prioritize businesses you’ve already saved, which gives you another reason to encourage customers to save your business in Maps.

2. Users can give Google “insider tips”:
You could tell the agent, “This restaurant specializes in lobster rolls”, and then AskMaps would be more likely to recommend that business when people are looking for “lobster rolls”. New local search hack, anyone?

Local search is moving from “show me businesses” to “do this for me”. And that’s going to change how businesses get discovered.

2. New research on Google reviews

We analyzed 765 Google Business Profiles to study the extra questions Google asks when you leave a review, like:

How much did it cost?
Did they have vegetarian options?
How is the parking here?

Those questions reflect exactly what customers want to know before they convert, and Google asks them to get as much first-hand information about your business as possible, so that their AI knows when to recommend you.

3. ChatGPT just got access to Yelp’s 330 million reviews

Yelp is licensing its reviews, ratings, photos, and business information to OpenAI, giving ChatGPT real-time data for local recommendations.

Yelp branding and links will appear directly in the answers when its content is used. And soon, users may even be able to request a quote from a local service provider without leaving ChatGPT.

Someone could ask ChatGPT for a plumber, lawyer, dentist, or restaurant, see recommendations based on Yelp data, read reviews, view photos, and potentially contact the business, all without opening Google or Yelp.

For local businesses, the takeaway is pretty simple:

Your Yelp profile and reviews just became much more important for showing up in AI search.

4. Catch up on the pod

Joy Hawkins recently discovered the new AI-driven local results (which I’m calling the “AI Local 6 Pack”).

Here’s how to optimize your business for the AI Local 6 Pack:

Continue doing SEO as usual. It is still the foundation of AI-driven results.
Ensure your content answers the questions people are asking in the AI chats.
Describe your business in semantic triples (subject-predicate-object).
Most importantly, build your brand outside of your website and GBP:
1. engage on Reddit and other communities in your industry
2. post regularly on social media
3. publish videos on YouTube (both long and short-form)
4. repurpose those videos on Instagram, TikTok, your GBP, and anywhere else you can distribute them

Start doing these things now, and you’ll be ready when the AI Local 6 Pack becomes the default form of search.

GBP Review Questions Research: Analysis of 765 Businesses

We analyzed 765 Google Business Profiles to study the extra questions Google asks when you leave a review, like:

How much did it cost?
Did they have vegetarian options?
How is the parking here?

We found that Google may ask your reviewers up to 14 different questions about your business. So, you should either:

Ask your customers to fill out those extra questions when they leave you a review, or
Ask them to mention one or two details about your business inspired by the questions for your category, and change your review requests from time to time to cover all the details you want mentioned.

For example:

review request 1 asks about the atmosphere and service
review request 2 asks about the vegetarian dishes and the parking
etc.

This way, when someone asks Google’s AI for the 'best quiet restaurant with vegetarian options near me,' your business will show up because your reviews mention these details.

1. Your GBP categories are helping Google’s AI understand your business

As AI queries become more specific, your categories matter more than ever.

Here’s what to do:

1. Choose the right Primary Category:
Pick the category that best describes your main service.

Your Primary Category is still one of the most important fields on your Google Business Profile, so don’t just choose something that is vaguely related.

2. Add every relevant Additional Category:
You can add up to 9 additional categories.

Use them to cover the other legitimate services your business offers, but don’t add categories for services you don’t actually provide.

The more accurately you categorize your business, the easier it is for Google and AI to understand what you do and recommend you to the right people.

2. ChatGPT’s hidden field that tells you where it searches for data

Mark Williams-Cook dug into what happens behind the scenes when ChatGPT searches the web, and he found this hidden label called "result_source."

It can be one of three things:

"serp" which is normal web search results.
"labrador" which is trusted or licensed sources such as Reuters, Wikipedia, product review sites.
and "bright" which might be structured data from a company called Bright Data.

A massive study of LLM visibility factors by Ben Wills analyzed 403,000 prompts across 10 different AI models to identify what correlates with being recommended by AI.

He looked at prompts across 100 different industries, including many local search industries.

The strongest signals for the “legal services for businesses” included:

Appearing in Google’s search results
Having a homepage that is highly relevant to what you offer
Building strong backlinks and domain authority
Having a presence on Wikidata
Being mentioned in relevant Reddit discussions

Appearing in search results (anywhere on page 1 is good enough) had the strongest correlation with AI visibility, so I guess SEO is far from dead.

How to improve AI visibility, according to this data:

Show up in Google’s search results
Clearly explain your services and location on your homepage
Earn links from trusted, relevant websites
Build a consistent and recognizable business entity
Get listed on Wikidata if you can (easier than Wikipedia)
Participate in the Reddit communities your customers use

Hello friends,

Here’s what’s up with local SEO this week 👇️

1. Google just told us how AI agents see your website

It’s not just what humans see on the screen.

AI agents are accessing a hidden version of your page called the Accessibility Tree.

It’s basically a stripped-down version of your page that shows the structure, roles, headings, labels, and text that machines can understand.

Your page can look perfect to humans, but be a total mess for AI agents.

Here’s how to check yours in Chrome:

Right-click any page and hit "Inspect."
In Elements, click the double-arrow icon
Select "Accessibility"
Toggle "Show Accessibility Tree" on.

A GOOD accessibility tree clearly shows your headings, text, buttons, links, and page structure. A BAD one can make your content almost impossible to understand:

So, make sure you are using proper HTML headings, labels, descriptive link text, and alt text. The easier you make your website for AI agents to understand, the better chance you have of showing up in AI results.

2. The role of reviews in AI search

Your reviews are doing a lot more than helping your customers make a decision. They’re teaching Google and AI about your business:

What the business actually does
Which services they are known for
What problems they solve
Why customers recommend them

Look at this example from Gemini below:

Many of the specific details it highlights are summarized directly from customer reviews on Google Maps.

So when you ask for a review, encourage customers to naturally mention:

The service they received
The problem you solved
What made the experience great

The more specific and detailed your reviews are, the easier it is for Google and AI to understand your business and confidently recommend it.

3. This new Google Maps loophole could tank (or fix) your SAB’s rankings

Mika Lepisto discovered that even though Google hides the address and map-pin editing options for Service Area Businesses, users can still access them by modifying the Google Maps URL.

Google’s bug bounty team told Mika that this is “intended functionality”.

On the plus side, though, maybe this loophole might finally be a way to fix a service area business that is ranking in the wrong location.

But until Google adds proper controls for business owners, this is far too easy for bad actors to abuse.

4. How to get “Immersive View” on your GBP without Google’s permission

You can’t have Immersive View unless Google invites you to the program, but here’s a brilliant trick to create a similar effect on your Google Business Profile:

Get a simple drone video of your business, upload it to your Google Business Profile, and you can create a very similar visual effect.

It won’t be the official Google Immersive View, but it can still make your Profile look way more engaging than the average Business Profile.

5. Catch up on the pod

The lack of pricing on your website can destroy your AI visibility.

It turns out that pricing is a huge category in AI search.

It makes sense why some businesses wouldn’t want to list their pricing (maybe you don’t want to scare people away, maybe you want to filter out low-budget leads).

But in his article “Where AI agents get stuck on your site”, Kevin Indig explains that when AI bots do searches on behalf of the users, they always try to figure out pricing. Even if the user is not directly asking about the price, the AI will look into it.

So, not listing your pricing on your website, listings, etc. leaves you with 2 outcomes:

- the AI completely excludes you from its answer
- the AI finds your pricing on 3rd party websites, affiliates, or aggregators and gives possibly inaccurate or incomplete pricing information to the user
