Setup: A child was placed in a room with a marshmallow and given a choice:

Eat one marshmallow now
Wait 15 minutes and get two marshmallows

Outcome: Some children ate the marshmallow immediately, while others waited for the reward.

Key outcomes among children who delayed gratification and waited for the second marshmallow:

Had higher SAT scores
Lower levels of substance abuse
Lower likelihood of obesity
Better responses to stress
Better social skills
Overall better life outcomes
