And if you’re looking for a reason to get buzzed on campus in broad daylight, consider trying the club’s 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. happy hour.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Contrary to what you might infer from its name, the club does not require a membership to dine. Walk in past the grand double doors and ask for a seat at the bar. The only brews subject to happy hour prices are Samuel Adams, Coors Light, and Guinness. You’ll have to shell out $17.50 for a so-so cheese board, but you’ll get free potato chips to munch on between your $19 cocktails.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Unless your drinking buddies of choice are emeritus faculty, it isn’t exactly the place to get shithoused. But that’s half the fun of it: You’re not <i>really </i>supposed to be there.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The Trojan Sangria — $12.50 at happy hour — is quite yummy and reasonably priced, and will appeal to drinkers who don’t love beer and don’t care for whiskey- and gin-based cocktails (i.e. most students).</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It’s hard to recommend the University Club as a spot in your regular rotation. But if you’re a graduating senior looking for a novel addition to your USC bar crawls, you’ll be well-served by an early sangria at the club before wandering to Rock’s and the Nine O for an end-of-year celebration.</p><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/af42dc84-e6e3-4b03-87f7-671ef2999fc0/IMG_5248.jpeg?t=1775829212"/></div><div class="image"><img alt="" class="image__image" style="" src="https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/555762de-2868-4cb0-940a-8cdc4b17b4ec/F56447E4-B78B-4A5F-BF87-328F052AC8B5_1_201_a.jpeg?t=1775762105"/><div class="image__source"><span class="image__source_text"><p>There’s no beer on tap, but the glasses, at least, were chilled.</p></span></div></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">On a recent Wednesday visit with friends, we downed three drinks each in the span of an hour while several older couples politely dined nearby. (The Come Up Show via Flickr)</p></span></div></div><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">USC’s student-run Concerts Committee identified the Chainsmokers and Wallows, among others, as potential headliners for this year’s Springfest concert before eventually landing on Ty Dolla $ign, according to two sources with knowledge of the matter.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The committee was close to closing a deal with the Chainsmokers, but the EDM duo had a scheduling conflict, one source said. Wallows, on the other hand, was vetoed by the school’s Department of Public Safety because the indie band apparently has a history of distributing alcohol at concerts.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">“Springfest is a dry event,” DPS Chief Lauretta Hill wrote in a statement. “Wallows was not considered based on this.”</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The Concerts Committee never reached final negotiations with Wallows, one source said, so there’s no guarantee that the group would’ve performed at USC if not for the DPS veto.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Springfest, which is free for students, is generally one of the most-anticipated events of the school year. This year’s show is <a class="link" href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DVzHJ5fkrQq/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">set for Saturday</a> in McCarthy Quad and will feature the hyperpop group Frost Children and singer-songwriter Lana Lubany alongside Ty Dolla $ign. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">It’s unclear how much the Concerts Committee is paying the artists, but its total budget this year is $548,000, according to Undergraduate Student Government <a class="link" href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HKu5eevO0e4nageTbwdMx5ff_j3rdzSW/edit?gid=1661484269&utm_source=morningtrojan.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=chainsmokers-wallows-were-on-usc-springfest-shortlist#gid=1661484269" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">documents</a>. The committee is also responsible for the Welcome Back and Conquest concerts.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Past Springfest headliners have included Denzel Curry, Portugal. The Man, Dominic Fike, 2 Chainz, Migos, and Glass Animals. Last year, the rapper Don Toliver headlined the concert, which <a class="link" href="https://www.uscannenbergmedia.com/2025/04/09/springfest-2025-don-toliver-tore-up-the-coliseum/?utm_source=morningtrojan.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=chainsmokers-wallows-were-on-usc-springfest-shortlist" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">was held inside</a> the Coliseum for the first time ever.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Springfest is a massive undertaking. The events typically host several thousand students in the center of USC’s campus and can quickly go awry without proper planning. In 2017, the Los Angeles Fire Department <a class="link" href="https://www.uscannenbergmedia.com/2017/04/01/usc-springfest-cancelled-due-to-overcrowding/?utm_source=morningtrojan.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=chainsmokers-wallows-were-on-usc-springfest-shortlist" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">shut down the event</a> due to “overcrowding” and transported one person to the hospital.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Then there’s the matter of wrangling artists.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">“Coachella is a big issue for us, just because everybody who’s on the Coachella lineup can’t perform here because of radius clauses,” a Concerts Committee organizer said, referring to non-compete clauses that bar artists from performing nearby for a certain amount of time.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">The committee has in the past sought Charli XCX and Katseye, said the organizer, who asked to remain anonymous to discuss internal conversations.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">“It’s super back and forth,” the organizer said. “Sometimes things don’t work for no good reason and you’re back to the drawing board, so props to our executive team for the perseverance.”</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><i>Tomo Chien can be reached at </i><a class="link" href="mailto:tomo@morningtrojan.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"><i>tomo@morningtrojan.com</i></a><i>.</i></p></div><div class='beehiiv__footer'><br class='beehiiv__footer__break'><hr class='beehiiv__footer__line'><a target="_blank" class="beehiiv__footer_link" style="text-align: center;" href="https://www.beehiiv.com/?utm_campaign=49882a4f-8b6c-4e9b-9431-a7a0f843a69e&utm_medium=post_rss&utm_source=morning_trojan">Powered by beehiiv</a></div></div>

I wanted to tell you now so it doesn’t come as a surprise.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Since starting the newsletter four years ago, it has grown from a little-known email list to a must-read news source that delivers a steady stream of scoops about the university.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I’m proud that nearly 12,000 subscribers, from USC’s top executives to incoming freshmen, read our daily aggregation and reporting. I’m also proud that this is a profitable business — and in fact the only USC student news outlet that doesn’t receive funding from the school.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">At its core, Morning, Trojan is a one-man reporting operation, driven by my news judgment and the sources I’ve developed. I ultimately decided to shut it down because I can’t feasibly continue it after graduation.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">I owe many thanks to a number of people, most notably my long-time proofreader, Anna Hsu, whose behind-the-scenes work has kept this newsletter running.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If it’s any consolation, after graduation, I’ll continue covering USC for <a class="link" href="https://lamaterial.com?utm_source=morningtrojan.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=we-re-shutting-down-the-newsletter-in-may" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">L.A. You can expect more explosive scoops about USC, albeit with less granular coverage of day-to-day university life.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">After our last newsletter runs on May 1, we’ll publish an archive website so all our links remain on the internet. For posterity, the site will include a page of reader testimonials. </p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">If Morning, Trojan has made you laugh — or broke news that you thought was essential — it would mean a lot to me if you submitted a comment at <a class="link" href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScY0kyGXMQ1rtPwE3JJBZ_US8wPRu-IOPXsxI8zFzQep49GUQ/viewform?usp=publish-editor&utm_source=morningtrojan.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=we-re-shutting-down-the-newsletter-in-may" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">this link</a>. Others will, clearly, be absolutely stoked.</p><p class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">To the former: Thank you, that’s very kind.
