Just enough art for a delicious Friday evening

Clare Woods

Clare’s paintings are creepy and lux. I imagine Clare finger-painting with harsh pigments and getting so loopy she transcends this dimension and voilà!- she gives us a scene from another realm. Flowers like we have, eh? I thought they might look different… - but no, she paints on aluminum for this effect and as a former printmaker, she's a very process-oriented artist - careful, organized, and deliberate in her methods. Catherine Murphy

“The voices in your head say: You’re painting a crucifix, you’re painting your husband’s nipple. What are you thinking? What will people think about that? You have to throw it all out. I am an instinctual painter in many ways. It has a logic, but it’s the logic of instinct more than anything else. I feel drawn to certain things that I can’t be talked out of. I had to go back and paint my parents’ backyard. I had to paint my husband’s nipple. I don’t know why. I spotted my first Paola-bear in Vegas last weekend, made of wispy pink feathers like a boa. In Paola’s words, “I am in love, obsessed with, and totally overwhelmed by bears, and I live and breathe next to mountains. Adee is a painter, screen printer, filmmaker and musician (listen to their music here.) but above all Adee is a devoted spirit worker. In their words, “…our parents birthed us and take care of us and raise us, but in an ideal world, we would all be connected in this kind of larger thing…Growing up felt like there was that boundlessness, and I know there is this longing with me and my work to come back to that place, because I don’t want to forget that, even though many of those people are gone, that they’re still surrounding me … it’s spirit.” Learn more about Adee here.

I can’t stop thinking about these beautiful trees. Sue takes a walk, takes a picture, then projects that image onto a panel and paints it. Her work is about mark-making- her personal signature as a cathedral of branches. Stroke by stroke, she reveals her herself. Learn more about Sue here.

Kayla Mahaffey, born on the South Side of Chicago in 1994, contrasts a harsh wild world with the imagination and innocence of a child. In Kayla’s words, “My work reflects how the city directly affects our youth and how they in return react when they are cared for and also when they are not.” Learn more about Kayla Mahaffey here.

Merrick Adams

Merrick Adams is inspired by Alfred Korzybski’s idea that "a map is not the territory it represents...” meaning our perceptions, thoughts and language about reality are not reality itself. Merrick uses net to remove paint from the canvas, revealing layers of paint underneath to create a vision of the sea. Learn more about Merrick here. 

Hallie Packard

Hallie is a master rainbow painter, reminding us of the magic all around us, fleeting as it may be, when we’re still enough to notice. Learn more about Hallie here.

Kerry’s monumental paintings assert the presence of Black figures in museum spaces, challenging historical exclusions. By intentionally rendering his subjects’ skin in the deepest black—rather than shades of brown or mahogany—Marshall makes a bold statement about visibility and representation in Western art. In her own words, “… I was thinking of the biases regarding traditional associations of nature with the feminine. The linguistic heritage of the expression Mother Nature feminizes the environment, and gives our patriarchal system permission to extend its logic of subjugation and exploitation to nature, with the disastrous results that are pushing us to the brink of climate catastrophe… I work with iconic female figures of the Western canon by painters such as Matisse and Ingres, from a period in their careers in which they explored a fascination with the exotic Middle East through paintings of odalisques, who were quasi-slave women kept in seclusion. In my paintings I substitute trees, plants and flowers for drapery and furniture, forcing a visual relocation of the female form from the realm of the intimate to that of the universal.” Learn more about Dinora here.

I never really learned how to swim but my 6-year-old daughter takes lessons and she’s getting really good at it. When I see these paintings by Elizabeth, I think of the freedom and independence swimming offers my daughter, how being a confident swimmer opens up a whole new world of possibilities and I’m grateful. Justyna Kisielewicz

Justyna grew up in then-Communist Poland and her recent mixed-media paintings explore colonialism. They’re rich with symbolism down to the color— when she speaks of pink: pink like death by cyanide and pink like toys flooding in from the West after the Iron Curtain fell in 1991. The monochromatic tapestries falling like curtains over candy-colored action represent an ever-present history, a door that opens and closes like history repeating itself. Ayako Rokkaku

I saw Ayako in Miami in 2016. It was my first Miami Art Week and I saw her inside one of the pristine bright-white fair tents, fingerpainting a wall. She said hi and went back to work, messy, and I sort of wondered if anyone realized she was back here doing this with Warhols and Picassos on the wall just behind her. Little did I know she was internationally famous for such brazen work, beloved for her freedom and exuberance. Recently she’s taken on a new artform with her latest showing, Mountains of Nameless Emotions, delightful fabric confection-like towers. Learn more about Ayako here.

Lakwena is known for her larger-than-life, bold statement pieces. Her work is Afro-futuristic, utopian, energizing and about the things that connect us. “My work is rooted in the messianic ideology, which is this idea that there is a savior. It’s a lot deeper than just saying, things are good or are going to get better.” Her name, Lakwena, literally means Messenger of God. Yu Jin Goo

Yu Jin Goo relies on oysters and abalone (who’ve been making mother-of-pearl to line the inside of their shells for hundreds of millions of years) to tell a story about nature and his Korean heritage. With a practice rooted in the traditional Korean technique of Najeon, he fixes thin slices of mother-of-pearl into lacquered surfaces. Notice the fish in the first painting?
