The US kicks off tomorrow against Paraguay, as does Canada against Bosnia.

Below, we’ll give you a brief overview of the competition, along with who the professionals (sharps) are betting and who the liabilities are for the sportsbooks. Earlier today, we gave a general overview of how to approach betting soccer.

Content-wise, we’ll be posting static game updates across social media (X, Instagram, Threads, YouTube, etc.). However, all the latest and greatest info will be in our AI Tool, which is continously scanning the market. We’ll have some more apps coming out over the summer in time for football season, including a live betting app. Stay tuned!

⚽️ Competition Overview

There are 48 nations from across the globe competing in the tournament, the most in history. They are divided into six groups of four. Each teams plays three games in this stage, one against each other team. You get three points for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss. 32 teams then advance to the knockout stage, which has a traditional Round of 32, Round of 16, Quarterfinals, etc.

The groups are below.

If you’re unfamiliar with this tournament style, you might ask how can you go from 48 teams to 32? The top two teams in each group go through regardless. After that, the eight best third place teams go through ranked by their points (and then other tiebreakers, such as goal differential and goals scored).

The knockout bracket would be the above. With all the combinations, you might get overloaded brackets. Something to watch for!

The Favorites

The favorites are: defending Euro 2024 champs Spain +475, defending World Cup runner-up France +480, runner-ups of the last two Euros England +775, Portugal +775, powerhouse Brazil +875, defending champs Argentina +1000, Germany +1591, and Netherlands +1800.

The World Cup tends to not have surprises. No teams with worse odds than the above have won the World Cup in recent times. And, the only teams to win the World Cup are the above (except Netherlands/Portugal), Uruguay (+8000 this year), and Italy (didn’t qualify).

FYI: The US is +7500.

🔪 The Professional Bettors

The professional bettors (sharps) are betting on:
🇧🇷 Brazil +875
🇫🇷 France +480
🇳🇱 Netherlands +1800

🎰 The Sportsbook Liabilities

The main liability for the sportsbooks are:
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿England +395
🇫🇷 France +480
🇵🇹 Portugal +775
🇺🇸 United States +7500

Brazil is borderline. These might change throughout the tournament. But remember, with liabilities, it just means they don’t want them to win the title. So, if they lose in the Final that’s fine. In fact, a deep run by England without them winning the Final might be preferable to keep that huge market engaged.

Other Markets

Just real quick on some of the other markets. The sharps are on Mbappe (France) and Haaland (Norway) to win the Golden Boot (top scorer). They’re on Simon (Spain), Neuer (Germany) and Becker (Brazil) to win the Golden Glove (best goalkeeper). They’re on Pedri (Spain), Yamal (Spain), and Fernandez (Portugal) to win the Golden Ball (best player). The books are pretty good in all of those markets. No big liabilities.

For Group winners, they sharps are on New Zealand to win Group G and Colombia to win Group K.

The books are rooting against Mexico to win Group A. Anyone else would be best. In Group B, they’re fine all around. In Group C, they’re rooting against Morocco. Brazil would be best. In Group D, they’re rooting against the USA. Paraguay or Turkey would be best. In Group E, they’re rooting against Ecuador. Germany would be best. In Group F, they’re rooting against Japan. The Netherlands or Sweden would be best. In Group G-J, the they’re fine all around. In Group K, they’re rooting against Colombia. Portugal would be best. Finally, in Group L, they’re rooting against Croatia. England would be best.

Other Factors

This World Cup is unique in terms of other factors to consider, like weather, altitude, and distance. The European teams rarely win outside of Europe, and in the Americas (only Spain 2010 in South Africa and Germany in 2014 in Brazil). They’re not used to these factors. The Europeans are already having trouble with the heat. They’re not used to traveling long distances, teams will have to do here. For example, Portugal will have to travel three hours from their base in South Florida to Houston for their match against Congo. They don’t travel that far unless they’re playing Champions League. I honestly expect them to struggle a bit.

Keep in mind that some teams have been here for a few weeks to acclimate. France and Portugal are not in that group. They were playing matches in Europe and just came over yesterday. Also, England might play a Round of 16 match against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca. Teams struggle with the heat and altitude there. European teams haven’t won a match against Mexico there in some fifty years or so.

Wrap Up

Personally, I’m high on the non-European teams (especially the South American teams). The only European team I’m very high on is Spain. I also like Brazil too. But, this should be a fun tournament. I hope you find this report helpful along with the betting strategies. If the public is on a side, the opposite will be a global Need. But, without looking at any specific games, here’s what the books usually root for.

DRAW. Soccer betting is typically three-way. You have Team A, Team B, and the Draw. Bettors typically pick either Team A or Team B, and never the Draw. Oftentimes, you might have 90-95% of the handle on either team. Therefore, a Draw cleans everything up.

UNDER. Like most sports, casual public bettors want high scoring games. 3-2 is more fun than 1-0. Therefore, they’ll typically bet the Over. And, therefore the books would be rooting for the Under. The usual exception is if there’s a highly defensive team playing.

UNDERDOG (with exception). If they can’t get the Draw, the books would usually be rooting for the Underdog. However, if the favorites are long (like -500 or more), they’ll be rooting for the Favorite if they can’t get the Draw.

Those are the main markets. However, most betting in soccer is actually done as part of an accumulator or acca. It’s the equivalent of a parlay. In addition to the above, there’s a few more that the books are rooting for to kill those.

No BTTS (Both Teams To Score). Typically, bettors put in a BTTS (both teams to score) bet as part of their accumulator. So, if it’s 3-1, that means both teams scored and it cashes. So, if there’s a shutout like in the UEFA Champions League Final, that’s very beneficial.

(Popular player) to Not Score. Bettors usually add in a leg for the popular player on the team (like Messi, Ronaldo, Vinicius, etc.) to score. So, if they don’t score, that’s beneficial to the books.

So, if the books get one of those five, they’ll be in good shape. Don’t just blindly pick those in each match, but, have your betting portfolio trend in that direction.

🚨REMINDER: Most bets are graded after the regulation 90 minutes (plus injury time), even in the knockouts. Therefore, anything that happens in extra time isn’t counted. For example, if it ends 0-0 in regulation and 2-1 with Ronaldo scoring after extra time, it’s graded as the Draw, No BTTS, Ronaldo not scoring, and the Under 2.5.

The Asian Impact. Asia is the largest betting market in the world, estimated at $1 Trillion (with a T!) annually. It’s the most influential. In soccer betting, you’ll see something called an Asian handicap. That’s just the equivalent to our spread. The Asian markets typically bet that instead of the moneyline. Therefore, in matches during the Asian daytime (8 PM ET to 12 PM ET), which would typically be the first or last match of the day, the Asian public is usually all over the favorite on the Asian handicap. The books would typically be rooting for the underdog there. The sharps are typically on the underdog as well.

NOTE on Asian Handicaps: You might see an Asian handicap listed as “-0.5, -1”, or even “-0.75.” They both mean the same thing. Your first impression might be “what the heck? If my team wins 1-0, they cover. It’s no different from -0.5!” In Asian handicaps, they actually split your bet. If you bet $100, then $50 is on -0.5, and $50 is on -1. If a team wins 1-0, you push on $50, and win $50. If they draw or lose then you lose. If they win by 2 goals or more then you win your full bet. Keep that in mind.

Exact Scores. After all of the above, and limited scoring options in soccer, we can derive some Exact Score possibilities. The most optimal score is always 0-0. They get the Draw, Under, No BTTS, and no player scoring. After that, its 1-1. Sure BTTS cashes, but they get the Draw and Under. After that, it’s typically 1-0 or 2-0 on either side. So, you might consider placing those bets. For example, in the Euro 2020 Final, we played exact score 0-0 +1700 and 1-1 +500 bets. The 1-1 cashed.

Betting Market Wrap Up

Remember to keep your bets trending more towards what the books are looking for. Of course, if there are exceptions, we’ll post on social media. The professional bettors are usually on the Underdog, Draw, and/or Under. Also, remember to incorporate exact score bets into your betting.

Now that we covered the betting markets to help with your pregame betting, let’s dive into live betting.

🕛️ Live Betting

There’s two main approaches to live betting that we follow. One is the target approach, and the other one is the xG(oT) approach.

Live Targets. This is quite simple. If the live line hits a target, then we take it. The target tables are below.

Moneyline

Sharp Side

No Sharp/Sharp Fade

Aggressive

+200

+1000

Passive

+400

+1000

Asian Handicap

Sharp Side

No Sharp/Sharp Fade

Aggressive

+1.5

+3.5

Passive

+3

+3.5

Total

Sharp Side

No Sharp/Sharp Fade

Aggressive

+1

+2.5

Passive

+2

+2.5

You’d want to add those numbers above to the pregame lines. For example, let’s say you’re looking to bet an Under 2.5 that the sharps were on. If you’re aggressive, your target would be 2.5+1 or 3.5. If you were passive you’d bet 2.5+2 or 4.5. So, just wait until the live line hits the target (if it does) and take it. However, don’t bet after the 75th minute. It gets volatile after that, or they lock markets.

xG(oT) Approach. xG is expected goals, and xGoT is expected goals on target. Expected goals are the number of goals a team/player is expected to score based on a shot. It’s based on a bunch of variables, such as the location of the shooter, type of pass, attack, etc. So, if you have an xG of 0.1. It means 1 out of 10 shots from that spot would result in a goal. It is a preshot model, whereas xGoT is a post-shot model. That only looks at shots on target, and is based on a combination of shot and execution quality. So, for example, in that shot with an xG of 0.1, if he puts it in the corner it might have an XGoT of 0.7. The best website/app to track both real-time is FotMob.

I like to use both in combination. Sometimes xG is flawed. If you have 20 half chances at 0.1, your xG might be 2, but your xGoT might be 0.5 while you scored 0 goals. One strategy I like to use is if a team has +1 or more xGoT than their actual goals, and the xGoT is higher than the xG, then I’d place a bet. Most likely on them to score the next goal, but, you could use it for the Asian handicap, or even a result. For example, lets say Team A is tied 0-0 but they’re getting a bunch of quality chances and their xGoT is 1.5, and their xG is 1.3, but Team B’s is around 0.2 or 0.3 respectively, then I might place a bet on Team A to win.

Wrap Up

Soccer is the global game and will be getting a lot of attention world-wide over the next few months. Be sure to join in! But, keep it to what is managable for you. Start off with beer money, and then progress from there.

If you have any questions, be sure to reply to this email! In 2019, I went 4-for-4 on Final Four teams (a 1-in-5,000 shot). Last year, I would've taken the whole thing if Houston had won the title — but a timely hedge on Florida still made it what my wife calls our "March bonus." 🤣

These aren't guesses. They're strategies built on sharp betting data, historical seed performance, and pool-specific psychology. Here are the eight that matter most.

Why Getting the Champion Right Is Everything

Before the strategies: understand the math. In a standard scoring system, the champion alone is worth 63 points — roughly half of the average winning score of 120–150 points. In most large pools, you simply cannot win without nailing the champion.

The one exception? My 2019 pool rewarded upsets so heavily that I had clinched first place before the Final Four even tipped off.

Pick your champion first. Everything else flows from there.

Strategy #1: Work Backwards From the Champion

Most people fill out their bracket round by round, starting with the First Round. That's backwards.

The right order: Champion → Runner-up → Final Four losers → Elite Eight → and so on.

Since the champion accounts for the largest single point value in nearly every scoring system, your entire bracket should be built to support that pick — not assembled on the fly. Commit to your champion, then construct a realistic path for them to get there.

Strategy #2: Use Sharp Betting Odds and Free Models

You don't need to build your own model. You need to use the right inputs.

Sharp odds first. I lean on no-vig lines from the sharpest books as a true probability guide for regional winners and the champion. These are the most efficient signals available.

Free models as a complement. ESPN BPI, KenPom, and Torvik are all solid for filling in gaps.

This year, we've done the legwork for you. Our Odds Analysis page is live and updated — including true win probabilities for every team.

One standout this year: the four #1 seeds (Duke, Arizona, Michigan, and Florida) account for roughly 60% of the title probability combined. If you're filling out multiple brackets, putting a different #1 seed as champion in each is a strong baseline.

Strategy #3: Fade the Public

The same principle that drives sports betting applies directly to bracket pools: fade the public.

When a team is being selected by a disproportionate share of the pool, their elimination knocks out a huge chunk of your competition simultaneously. That's a massive edge.

Tools to use:

ESPN's "Who Picked Whom"

Yahoo's Pick Distribution

These aggregate millions of brackets and are your best proxy for what the field in your pool is likely doing.

We've also built this directly into our Odds Analysis page — look for the % Picked column to see where the public is over-indexed.

Strategy #4: Know Your Pool's Biases

Public data tells you what millions of people are picking. But your pool has its own biases.

Playing against mostly Michigan alumni? They'll over-index on Michigan and Michigan State.

Pool full of Duke grads? Same dynamic.

Seattle-based group? Gonzaga and Pac-12 schools will be over-represented.

The edge: avoid using those teams as your champion specifically in those pools. You won't get separation if you win with them — and you hand everyone else in the pool a free piece of your equity.

I run multiple pools with very different audiences, and I adjust my champion pick in each one accordingly.

Strategy #5: Follow the Money

Sportsbooks carry liability on futures markets — and those liabilities reveal something important.

When a book has significant liability on a team, it means they're comfortable with the risk of that team not winning. Last year, Vegas had meaningful liability on Connecticut, Duke, Michigan State, and St. John's. None of them won the title. None of the regional liability teams reached the Final Four.

Conversely: track where the sharps are betting. In 2022, sharp money was on Kansas. In 2023, it was on UConn. Both won.

We're releasing our Futures Report tomorrow — it covers this in depth with this year's data.

Strategy #6: Build a Historically Realistic Bracket

Bracket chaos has limits. History is a useful anchor.

A few hard truths:

All four #1 seeds reaching the Final Four has happened twice in history. Don't bank on it.

No #5 seed has ever won the national championship.

The champion is almost always a #1, #2, or #3 seed.

If you're filling out five brackets, here's how to allocate seeds historically:

The historical allocation of each seed by round (assuming 5 brackets).

Do plan for some #1 and #2 seeds to lose in the Second Round. Don't pick a 1 vs. 16 upset. Consider one 2 vs. 15 upset if you have five or more brackets — especially if your scoring system rewards upsets (see Strategy #7).

Strategy #7: Optimize for Your Pool's Scoring System

A 1-2-4-8-16-32 scoring system and a 1-2-4-8-12-20 system require completely different bracket strategies.

Standard system: The championship game alone is worth as much as the entire First Round. Max value lives in the late rounds — get your champion and Final Four right.

Upset multiplier system: Lean into 5/12 and 6/11 upsets. Early-round correct picks can accumulate significant value.

My 2019 pool used an upset multiplier — which is why a Virginia / Michigan State / Auburn / Texas Tech Final Four was optimal. That same combination would've been dead money in a standard scoring system.

Know your scoring system before you pick a single game.

Strategy #8: Pick a Realistic Tiebreaker Score

Most bracket pools use the championship game score or total points as a tiebreaker. Don't ignore it — this has decided pools.

A Duke vs. Michigan final will play out very differently than a Florida vs. Arizona one. Pace, style, and team defense all affect the expected total.

The betting spread and total are the sharpest guides, but those won't be set until the matchup is determined. In the meantime, we've built a Score Predictor that models any potential title matchup — typically landing within a point or two of the opening line once it's posted.

Bonus: Think of Your Bracket as Part of Your Betting Portfolio

If you're also betting March Madness futures, your bracket and your futures book should work together.

Example: I'm in a pool with a $100 buy-in where the winner takes ~$2,000 and top 5–6 finishes pay $500+. If Arizona is +500 on the futures market, a $100 futures bet gets me $500 — the same as a top-5 finish. In the past, the losers of those games would be basically be out. Essentially, they’d need to run the table in order to make the four-team playoff.

However, now with the 12-team playoff, teams can afford to lose a game or two (or even three!), and so the losers aren’t out of it. In fact, there might even be value on them that the sharps could extract. They’re taking a wait and see in regards to what teams lose and if there’s value there. So, I’ll be looking for sharp action on the three losing teams.

So, watch the action next week on the three losing teams.

ACTION PLAN

If you’ve followed BETTR for a bit, you know that I’ve really not been into Futures personally. There were a few reasons for that.

1. Hard to manage. Let’s say Alabama appreciated a bit. With the lack of two-way markets in the traditional sportsbooks, it was hard to capture that equity. You’re at the mercy of whether they win or not.

2. Opportunity cost. Personally, I don’t like tying up my $$ for months at a time without a clean exit. I like my $$ working for me, and, Futures don’t really do that.

However, a few things have changed now that prediction markets have gone mainstream. First, you can exit whenever. You can sell off positions (as I’m typing this, I had sold off my Baylor position in the Baylor-Auburn game at a profit. It’s down to 13% and if I want, I can reenter. And, if I was really paying attention, I could’ve taken something on Auburn simultaneously). So, if I take Alabama, and it appreciates in October, I can sell it off if I want. I don’t need them to win.

Second, some of these prediction markets are having promotions just for depositing $$. For example, Kalshi is offering 4% APY on any $$ deposited with them, even if its in a position. So, let’s say I take a $1K position on Alabama. That $1K would be earning interest.

So, here’s what I’m doing. I’m taking Alabama on the prediction markets. It’s trading at 10 cents per share. If it appreciates, then cool, I’m in the money. I’ll figure out an exit plan. Maybe I’ll let it ride all the way through, Maybe I’ll partially sell it off. Similar to what I did to Baylor earlier. But, I’ll take profit. Think of it like a stock. Alabama is a financial asset that I’m investing in.

Let’s say it depreciates. I might set my “stop loss” at 7 cents a share. So, if it goes down, I’ll get out. This means that if I really want, I can up my unit size. So, let’s say it’s normally $1K. I can put $5K into Alabama, and get out if it goes down to $4K. Let’s say it doubles to 20 cents (aka, to $10K), I can exit there at a 5X my unit size profit. So, I’d be changing the risk-reward ratio.

Ongoing, I mentioned I’ll be figuring out an exit on Bama. But, I’d also be figuring out entrances on other teams. If their “stock” is going up, we can figure out buying opportunities, even if the sharps aren’t on them. Take the Mariners in baseball. On July 31st, they were trading at 3 cents per share. On August 22nd, I got out at 6 cents. As we speak, we’re putting together a bunch of analytics on the website to support this. As we go on, we hope to provide more real-time analytics.

There’s a lot here. Some of it builds on previous newsletter entries. But, we’ll have a deeper dive on this in a separate newsletter. Since it’s from a sharp book, they don’t adjust for money, and incorporate all of the models/information out there, so, it is the best representation of that team’s chance of winning. So, Duke has a 19% chance of winning the title.

% Picked: This is how often the team is picked to win the title (or the region) on the major pool websites. So, Duke has been picked to win in about 27.9% of brackets.

OP/UP: Aka, Overpicked/Underpicked. This is the difference between the two previous categories. If it’s a positive # or green, then it is underpicked in relation to their true odds, and vice-versa for overpicked. So, taking our Duke example, they’re overpicked by 9%.

How-to-use: I’d use this for two main purposes. First, to find the teams that are most probable to win that you might not consider. For example, Gonzaga has a 10% chance to win the Midwest. Higher than all but two teams, so, you might consider pushing them forward even if you hadn’t already. Second, to stay away from overpicked teams. For example, 66% of people are picking Duke to make the Final Four, even though they only have a 49% chance of making it, so, you’re not going to gain much by picking them. On the flip side, I’d look for underpicked teams, like, Texas Tech. They aren’t being picked much, but have a relatively high chance to win the West.

Note: I haven’t included anyone beyond the 10 seeds for the title, but, the only two teams of note beyond that are North Carolina (0.7% chance to win and 0.3% picked), and Colorado State (0.5% chance to win and 0.1% picked).

NATIONAL TITLE

EAST REGION

MIDWEST REGION

SOUTH REGION

WEST REGION

Powered by beehiiv

So, the sharps see value there.

In terms of liabilities, I’d say the only four true liabilities are the four highest ones. I’d expect the borderline teams to end up being good results unless one of the longshots (Gonzaga, Kansas, or Kentucky) go on a run. I utilized these strategies in winning pools since the late-90's, including the past few years since I’ve started putting together this article. Many readers have won pools as well. In 2019, I even went 4/4 in Final Four teams (a 1-in-5,000 shot!!) in one of my pools. Even if I don't win, I'm always in the mix when it gets to the Final Four, and have almost always won $$ in the secondary positions. So much so, that my wife calls it our March bonus. 🤣

In most large pools, you're going to have to get the champion right to even have a shot at winning the pool. The average winning score in a standard scoring system is between 120-150 points. A champion is worth 63 points. That means half of your points will come from the champion! Therefore, I like to pick my champion first. The only time I've ever won a pool (or even money) without getting the champion right was the perfect Final Four one because I was so far ahead that I won before the Final Four even started.

Strategy #1: Work Backwards

Yes, that’s right? Do you pick the first round winners first, then the second round, etc? Basically, play out the tournament on paper? Or, when you fill it out on ESPN. I always did that too.

But, it’s better to do it the other way around. Pick your champion first, then your runner-up on the other side of the bracket, then the two losing Final Four teams, etc. As mentioned above, getting the champion right matters the most (under most scoring systems). In my 25 years of doing pools, I’ve rarely seen the winner not get the champion right in any decent sized pool. Pick the most probable champions, runner-ups, etc. to give you the best chance to win. How do you do that? On to #2…

Strategy #2: Utilize Models and Betting Numbers

They don’t Need to be ones you create either! You can use free ones. Recently, I’ve put more of an emphasis on the sharp odds rather than the models, but, if I need to fill in the gaps, I’ll use the models.

In terms of the sharpest odds, I’ll use the non-vig odds from Pinnacle for the regional winners and the champions as a guide. That will give you a true proportion as well.

If I need to fill in the gap with the free models, I’ll use ESPN’s BPI, KenPom, Torvik, etc.

But, especially this year, it’s top heavy. The four #1 seeds (Auburn, Duke, Florida, and Houston) have about a 60-65% chance of winning the title. So, if you have four brackets and choose each one as a champ, you’re going to be in the mix for some $$.

Strategy #3: See who the Public will select and fade them.

Yes, your old betting adage of fading the public applies here too. If a team is getting selected at a disproportionate rate, their loss will kill off most of those brackets.

I love to use ESPN’s Who Picked Whom list along with Yahoo’s Pick Distribution, which shows the most common selections of millions of brackets in their pools. To me, this is the best indicator of who a large amount of people in your pool will select.

In 2019, Duke (led by Zion) was disproportionally selected as champions in 27% of brackets, even though the models and odds only showed with a 15% chance of winning, less than Virginia (25%) and Gonzaga (20%). From this, I knew that most people in my pool would pick Duke to reach the Final Four and to win the title (it ended up being around 50% across my pools), so instead of getting caught up in the Duke rat race, I decided to not choose them as champions in any of my brackets, meaning their loss would basically eliminate the majority of my competition. Speaking them…

Strategy #4: Understand who your competition will pick based on the makeup of your pool.

Are you in a pool where most people are in Texas or Houston? They’ll mostly pick Houston to win. Don’t pick Houston in that pool. Are you in a pool where most of the majority are Auburn alumni? Don’t pick Auburn in that pool. There will be a disproportionate number of people picking those teams. For example, one pool I’m in is mostly college buddies and their friends in Michigan. They’ll pick Michigan and Michigan State to go far, along with the other Midwest schools. In another pool, with mostly high school buddies from Seattle, they’ll pick Gonzaga and other west coast schools to go far. So, if I was to pick Michigan State for example, I’d avoid using them in the Michigan pool.

Strategy #5: Take into account who Vegas does not want (or wants) to win!

When the sportsbooks have liabilities in the futures markets, it means that they’re okay taking a chance on that team (meaning, they don’t expect that team to win, and they’re okay with taking a risk in losing all that cash). In 2022, Vegas had liabilities on Gonzaga, Houston, UCLA, and a few others. None reached the Final Four, nor won the title. It’s best not to have these teams as your champion. This year, one liability is Duke. Also, I’d look to who the professionals are betting on. In 2022, they were on Kansas. In 2023, they were on UConn. This year, one team they’re on is Auburn.

Later today, we’ll be releasing the Futures Report that covers this more in-depth!

Strategy #6: Create a realistic bracket using history as a guide!

There will not be all #1 seeds in the Final Four. That’s only happened once in history. There most likely won’t be a #5 seed to win the title. If you had 5 brackets, here’s how you should break down your selections based on historical results.

The historical allocation of each seed by round (assuming 5 brackets).

What does that mean? It means you should only have #1-#3 seeds in your championship game and as your champion. Your Final Four itself will mostly be #1 and #2 seeds and occasionally #3-#5 seeds. Pick some #1 seeds to lose in the Second Round and some #2 seeds as well. Don’t pick the 1/16 upset, but do pick a 2/15 upset, only if you had 5+ brackets, and maybe if your scoring system rewarded upsets. Speaking of which…

Strategy #7: Optimize your bracket for the pool’s scoring system!

Putting together a bracket in a pool using a standard 1-2-4-8-16-32 system is much different than a pool using a 1-2-4-8-12-20 system, or one that has an upset multiplier, etc.

In a standard system, getting the championship game right is worth as much as the entire first round! In one where upsets matter, you're going to want to lean to your 5-12, 6-11 upsets, etc.

The pool in which I went 4/4 in Final Four teams rewarded upsets in all rounds. Therefore, the optimal bracket did turn out to be a Virginia, Michigan State, Auburn, Texas Tech Final Four. I wouldn't have gone with that Final Four combination in any other scoring system. That's why my other one turned out to be Virginia, Kentucky, Duke, and Michigan.

BONUS TIP

I view bracket pools as part of my overall portfolio for March Madness, including betting. So, be sure to optimize that based on the return. For example, one pool I’m in has a $100 buy-in. IIRC, the winner usually gets $2K and the top 5 or 6 get paid at least $500+. Auburn is only about +500. Therefore, if I bet Futures, a $100 bet on Auburn will get me $500. However, I know I’d place top 5 in my pool if Auburn wins, and so I’d rather just bet Auburn there where I will win at least $500 anyways.

But, for a longshot like Tennessee, at +2000, I’d rather just use them on the Futures market. So, also something to consider as you’re formulating your pools.

Wrap Up

Always work backwards and pick your champion first. Utilize models in doing so. See who the public is picking and fade them. In doing that, understand who your competition will pick based on their biases. Take what Vegas wants to happen into account. Ensure your bracket is realistic and optimized for your pool’s scoring system.

Later on today, we’ll be releasing the Futures Report as mentioned, followed by an Odds Analysis that compares the true odds of each team winning with their Pick Proportion on ESPN/Yahoo. Tomorrow morning, on social media (@BETTREdge), I’ll be releasing my Final Fours based on all of these tips/information.

Best of luck!

-Anish

Powered by beehiiv

Introducing Betting Strategy Sessions.

Starting in a few weeks, I’ll be streaming Betting Strategy Sessions. This WON’T just be giving out picks and parlays, but, I’ll walk you through my process on setting my strategy for the day. Why am I parlaying these two? Why did I set up the parlay in this way? How am I determining what to live bet? How did I determine how much to risk?

That’s all personal to me though. Maybe I have something going on that day, or access to certain books, and so it isn’t standard across the board (hence, why it’s not really picks). More importantly, I want to take that time to help YOU set your strategy for the day, based on your leans/edges, books, parameters, etc. It will be a more real life application of everything we’ve covered in these newsletters (control, risk, parlays, etc.)

It will be streamed on multiple platforms. Still figuring out which ones, but, definitely YouTube, and most likely X.

Stay tuned for more on that in the coming weeks!

THE STRAIGHT BET
How to deal with the winter wasteland of sports betting…

The Super Bowl was last Sunday, concluding the most active betting period of the American calendar, with a surprising Eagles rout of the Chiefs 40-22. Now, we’re in the barren winter wasteland between the Super Bowl and March Madness, which starts with the First Four in a little over a month from now.

So, what are we supposed to do? Below, I’ll give you an overview of what’s going on in the sports betting world, and how we can navigate/profit from it.

Sports Take a Break

Literally. There’s no NHL games until next Saturday. The NBA All-Star Break starts today and then there’s no games until next Wednesday. So, two major sports are taking extended breaks. However, instead of an All-Star Break, the NHL has a 4-Nations tournament that started on Wednesday. Of course, college basketball is continuing in full swing.

Betting Markets Take a Break

Over the next month, you’ll see many people within the industry, whether that’s bookmakers, sharps, journalists, and others, go on vacation. They’ve pulled long hours and grinded since August, and it’s a good time to just go to the beach and recharge before March Madness. Schools have mid-winter or spring breaks as well, so, it’s a good time to get out with the families.

Meaning, you’ll see a lot less sharp volume over the next few weeks. But, on the other hand, because bookmakers, traders, etc. are taking at points and there’s potentially less skilled replacements, you might see softer lines at points. So, there’s a give and take.

So, now, that we know what the betting markets are doing, how can we take advantage of that?

Option #1: Take a Break

You can take a break right alongside them! Get a mental recharge. Update your models. Do a post-mortem on the past football season. Learn more.

Remember, betting is long-term, and, from time-to-time, everyone needs a break, so its a good time to take one.

Option #2: Gameplan for March Madness

If your attention has mostly been on football over the past few months, now is a good time to shift into March Madness prep mode, especially with the NHL and NBA taking breaks. College hoops is in full swing and in the heart of their conference schedules, and now is a good time to have some games in the background and do some research to help prepare you for March Madness (not just betting, but your pools as well).

You don’t have to bet per say, but, start studying up!

Option #3: Bet!

This is what you probably want to do 🤣 , so let’s go through this.

As I mentioned above, sharp action should be relatively light, and the public as well, so, in general, the markets will be light. So, it’s not like we can just tail or fade the sharps or use them in any way to set our strategy. But, we can find value.

So, how do we do this?

#1: Arb Betting. Softer lines means that there might be some discrepeancies. So, look across different books for arb opportunities. Will have deeper newsletters on this, but, arbing is finding discrepancies between books (say, a favorite is -120 and one book, and an underdog is +125 at another book) to find risk-free returns. Personally, I keep this pretty small because the returns are pretty small. Good for a guaranteed $15, $20, etc. And, if you do it a bunch during the day, then you’re good. However, it is a good way to get limited at books. My

#2: Getting ahead of line movements. With the softer lines, they’re pretty volatile, so I like to get ahead of them. So, beforehand, make a decision, and then, see if the market agrees with you. So, let’s say you’re looking to bet the Under 159 on a game. And then it shifts to 158.5, I’d jump on it there. It will probably get down to 155 or so before gametime.

#3. Live Betting. I’d also look for opportunities in-game. Those lines tend to be softer. Pick a few games, and watch/track them.

#4. Bet on Cricket. It just so happens that there’s a major cricket tournament from February 19th to March 9th, the ICC Champions Trophy. It’s the 8-hour version, with matches starting at 4 AM ET, and ending at 12 PM ET, so, with #3, there will be some good live opportunities. We put together a cricket betting primer last year.

Remember, money isn’t any greener depending on the sport. And so, even though it could be a MAAC basketball game and not the Super Bowl, there’s still opportunity.

Wrap Up

Even though it’s the winter wasteland of sports for the next month, there’s a lot of opportunity if you choose to bet. If not, then, make sure to get a mental recharge, or at least study up for March Madness.

Personally, I’m going to do a combination of all the above. I usually take my vacations after March Madness, and use this time to enhance the business offerings. So, of course I announced the Strategy Sessions, but, there will be more changes (and new stuff) to everything else. Those will be announced in due time.

If you have any questions, be sure to reply to this email! Best of luck!

ON THE BOARD
This Week in Sports Betting

🏀 All weekend: College hoops regular season is in full swing. The college hoops regular season continues. There’s a few weeks before Conference Tournaments start, followed by March Madness.
🏒 All week: 4-Nations Tournament. The NHL is replacing the All-Star Game with a two-week tournament between Canada, USA, Sweden, and Finland. It’s a round robin followed by a Final between the top two teams. Canada was the pre-tournament favorite (at +145) followed by the USA (at +150). As of now, the books are rooting for one of the other two teams (Sweden at +430 or Finland at +950) to win.
🏀 Sunday: NBA All-Star Game. The NBA ASG has a different format this year. It will actually be a tournament consisting of four teams, similar to the recent NHL ASG’s. Four teams (Team Charles, Team Shaq, Team Kenny, and Team Candace) will play two semifinals with the winners advancing to a championship game. It won’t be timed, but, there will be games to 40. As of now, Team Shaq (headlined by Steph, AD, Tatum, and Durant) are the favorites at +165, followed by Chuck at +175, Kenny at +375, and Candace at +650. One of the best times of the year. Billions of dollars will be wagered on the game tomorrow. Over 70-80% will be on the vast array of props. I’ll go through seven tips to help you navigate these markets.

I hope you find it useful in your wagering, and best of luck!

Tip #1: Shop Around

This goes for most every bet, but, especially props. On an over/under for rushing yards, that might be different by a few yards across different books. As I write this, the Saquon Barkley O/U is 113.5 at Caesars but 109.5 at FanDuel. That matters!! Also, some books might be priced at -120/-120 and others at -110/-110. Even on YES/NO bets, the juice/odds are very different at different books, so make sure to look at different books to get the best line for your side. For example, if betting the Under on Saquon rushing yards, I’d bet at Caesars. If on the Over, I’d bet on FanDuel. Those few yards are the difference between a win, loss, or push and that juice (either + or -) is a real dollar impact and it adds up!

Tip #2: Create a narrative

Create a story on how you think the game will go. If you’re into models/simulations, run those. That way, your entire profile of props make sense. For example, it probably won’t make sense to bet the Chiefs team total Under and then Kelce to score multiple touchdowns. You want to make sure they are somewhat correlated.

Tip #3: No and Under

In the Super Bowl, if you’re on the fence, then always lean No and Under. The public will mostly be on YES. YES to OT, YES to a safety, YES to a kick hitting the Upright, YES to anytime TD’s, etc. Why? They want excitement. And, excitement comes with YES’s, and so the books and sharps always want NO. Fun fact: You know what the worst prop betting play has been in Super Bowl history? When the Seahawks scored on a safety on the first play from scrimmage in Super Bowl XLVIII. That was a 7-figure loss for the books on the single play! The public hit the YES to safety and the first score safety prop and a whole host of other things. Many of the bookmakers hadn’t even turned on the game yet! They did end up ahead on that game because the public was on the Broncos and all of their offensive props (they lost 43-8).

In regards to excitement, the public will bet the Overs as well. Overs on TDs, yards, etc. Again, because of excitement. Did the public enjoy the Rams-Patriots Super Bowl a few years ago that ended 13-3? Hell no! The books and sharps sure did though.

Tip #4: Look for correlated props

If you're all in on the Eagles winning the Super Bowl, then look for props that will most likely happen in that scenario. For example, Jalen Hurts should have to have a decent game, so you might bet the Overs on his stats. Or, 60% of all MVPs have been quarterbacks (including many recently), so if you think the Eagles would win, then bet Jalen Hurts to be MVP. If you think the Chiefs will, then bet on Mahomes.

Also, look for correlated statistical props. If you think the game will go over the point total, then, pick the Overs on QB yards, TDs, etc. Or, vice-versa. If you think the Eagles will win, then you might pick Eagles Overs and Chiefs Unders.

On the flip side, don't bet too many props that would contradict eachother. I.E, If you bet the Over on the game and a lot of Unders on the props.

Tip #5: Don’t bet too many props (or, if you do, practice bankroll management!)

Don't go out betting 20-30 props. You won't have an edge on most of them, and, the ones that you actually do have an edge on, might be negated by those many props you don't have an edge on. But, if you do, practice bankroll management. You'll not have an edge on the Gatorade color, but you might bet it for fun. Just take a portion of your bankroll (maybe 1-2 units), and split it up. It might just be a few dollars here and there, but you're just playing for fun and to make it interesting!

However, spreads and totals might not give you as much control. If I take Chiefs -3 at -110, typically the books don’t offer Chiefs -3 at -230, or +150 if the odds of them covering change. They offer a new live line at whatever is 50/50. Therefore, I can’t exit that position as easily. My control is less.

Tip #6: Watch line movement

With hundreds and hundreds of props out there, a lot of times, the books just put out a number and let the sharps beat it into place. The lines are relatively soft. Watching that line movement can help you distinguish where the sharps are, and, then you can try to find books that are late to adjust (see Tip #1!). This line movement can present middling opportunities as well.

Know that the very public props (QB passing yards, receiving yards), etc. will be pushed up by the public, so, if you're looking to bet the Under, wait until gametime. The sharps are doing that as well.

Tip #7: Don’t Same-Game Parlay

This is a whole other newsletter topic, but don’t bet SGP’s. Books have around a 40% edge on them. In comparison, they have about a 2-3% edge on straight bets. No one will ever win long-term on SGPs, unless they’re horribly mispriced (which they won’t be in the Super Bowl.) Just do straight bets.

Wrap Up

Personally, I don’t stake too much on Super Bowl props and look at them as a fun thing. However, I do mostly play a bunch of straight bet NO’s/Unders. Just some fade the public plays or following the sharps.

If you have any questions, be sure to reply to this email!
