Ensure all your income and expense records are up-to-date, and start gathering any documents you’ll need for your tax return. All ABN, ACN and TFN holders should have their eyes on the June window for ATO’s urgent deadlines, available here.

🗓 1st July:
For self-employed contractors, the new financial year begins today, meaning you can now lodge your individual tax return. While you have until 31st October to complete this, early submission can help avoid last-minute stress and ensure all your savings are promptly shown. New tax cuts are subjected to change from July onward, you can find the changed rates here.

🗓 14th July:
Mark this date for the due date of Pay As You Go (PAYG) withholding payments. Timely payments are essential to avoid any penalties or interest charges. If you have withheld installments please check this important column.

🗓 28th August:
If your business makes payments to other contractors or subcontractors, you are required to lodge a taxable payments annual report by 28th August. This report details the payments you have made to contractors and is essential for ensuring compliance with tax regulations.

🗓 31st October:
This is the final day to lodge your tax return for the previous financial year. Ensure you have all your documents in order well before this deadline to avoid any last-minute rush. Just like any other solo-preneur, Taylor had to strategise every step of the way to make her gigs absolute money-bagging successes. Good news is, you can too!

1. 🎸 Influencer marketing - Getting influencers to use your products or talk about your services has never been more popular. Taylor can easily afford cross-platform influencer marketing. But it can be hard for emerging business owners, side hustlers and sole traders. You can opt for more ‘passive marketing’, for example communicate through your brand voice with other people on influencer’s comments, tag them in your own content to grab attention and engage with positive trends set by influencers on social media!

2. 🎸 AI bots - Bots like Chat GPT make it super easy and conversational to source data on pop-culture and trends. All you have to do is ask the right questions. For example, Taylor could ask a bot ‘what’s my most played song?’ and the bot would queue chart-toppers. She would then use the data to schedule songs in her concert to build hype and attract as much crowd for future concerts. Of course she will not play all her songs in a random order. If you want to save time yet bag more money using your gig, it’s essential to not play all your good cards at once.

3. 🎸Personalised marketing - Let’s be honest, not everyone’s a fan. But they would still look her up from time to time just in case. Similarly, you will not always have the best reviews on gig platforms. The key is to put the reviews to use, talk about them among your customers, express your awareness and do better! You can’t build a fan base in one day, but you can sure make a difference in your business presence. If you are a rideshare partner, it is essential to communicate any possible inconvenience in the beginning and thank your customer for anticipated co-operation.

4. 🎸Competitor analysis - For every pop-star who makes $5 mil a day, there’s another one who makes $7 mil. They have separate fan bases and they don’t compete for each other’s fans. That doesn’t mean they don’t keep tabs on each other’s industries. Similarly any solo-preneur or sole trader should focus on marketing their business to a versatile crowd. You cannot be the Jack of all trades, but keeping tabs on brands or other sole traders who earn more will sooner or later give you good returns!

5. 🎸 Value connections - No man is an island and no industry works without a network of successful people. For example, if you are a freelancer you might want to re-think the prices you offer. If you are a ride-share or food delivery partner, try to manage timing and bag more gigs on specific days!

2. 😲 A massive job shake-out - Directors of leading companies are predicting a big shake-out in the job market this year! This not only means that you should focus more on your side hustle for financial safety in case you have a full-time job but also to invest into up-skilling. A shake-out means employers would not go for traditional hiring practice, but the jobs still need to get done, therefore more scope for independent contractors!

3. 😲 RBA’s first board meeting discussed the possible fall of current inflation - the interest market right now is driven by a high risk- high gain phenomenon. However, after RBA’s first board meeting, Central bank has been given a new target of tipping the inflation by 2-3% by October this year! Investments and premiums are also active expenses, directly or indirectly, they impact each one of us. Keep an eye out!

4. 😲 Average pay tops $100K - This is a decade high wage hike! Consumer price inflation is off the charts and market is filled with exciting yet risky opportunities. Be mindful of your savings and try to opt for a tight budget if you haven’t already.

Uber has partnered with electric carmaker BYD to deploy over 10K electric cars (BYD Atto 3) in Australia. As part of Uber’s green ride-share plans, these cars will be available to drivers on a lend-to-own scheme.

The good news is this will reduce emissions footprint, and for drivers, this means an opportunity to maximise earnings.

73% of gig workers struggle with cash flow 

Data analytics on the expenses of 5000+ gig workers by MyGigsters showed that over 73% of gig workers struggle with cash flow and constantly need access to credit. Unfortunately, gig workers, only have limited access to fit-for-purpose credit products. This impacts financial stability and safety during gig work.

Are algorithmically controlled gig workers deeply burned out?

In the gig economy, where people take on flexible work, this study looked at how workers feel about algorithms controlling their jobs and how it affects their motivation. The research found that gig workers who think algorithms are in control tend to be more engaged in their work. However, this feeling of being controlled by algorithms can also lead to burnout, which affects work engagement.

Interestingly, having a good experience with the technology moderates the impact of burnout, meaning gig workers can still stay motivated despite feeling burnt out due to algorithmic control.

Uber has warned that if Australia's parliament passes new gig economy laws establishing minimum pay rates for workers, it may need to increase its rideshare and food delivery prices by up to 85%. '

This could result in a significant decrease in the number of trips for drivers, with potential consequences for regional areas. The company argues that the proposed penalty rates are outdated and unsuitable for platform work.

Great news for gig economy workers in Australia, including those cool ride-share drivers and awesome food delivery riders we all depend on! 🎉

From July 1, 2024, a new rule will ensure they receive a minimum amount of money for their work and protect them from being unfairly removed from their job. This is all thanks to a bill (a type of proposal for a new rule) that the Albanese government plans to introduce next week.

This move is part of the government's promise in 2022 to make the gig economy safer and better for everyone. They want to end unsafe working conditions that sadly have led to accidents and even deaths of food delivery riders.

But that’s not all! The government is working on more things to improve the job scene for casual workers, too, like ensuring they get equal pay and better rights and protecting them from wage theft (when people aren’t paid fairly for their work).
