My Go-To Royalty-Free Drum Plugin (As A Guitarist That Hates Programming Drums)

I’ll be honest: I’m a guitarist first, a songwriter second, and a drum programmer... somewhere around eighth on the list.

For years, I used EZdrummer because it was the path of least resistance. It looked slick, had lots of presets, and worked okay once I figured out how to jam parts together.

But over time, I found myself spending more time dragging and chopping MIDI files than actually writing songs. That’s not ideal when you're just trying to write music, not become a full-time beat detective.

So I ditched EZdrummer.

Now I use Yurt Rock. And if you’re like me, a guitarist with home studio ambitions but limited patience for MIDI gymnastics, this might be the drum solution you didn’t know you needed.

What Is Yurt Rock? And Why Should You Care?

You Don’t Need Friends or Even Human Contact To Get Real-Sounding Drums

I can track at 2am with headphones, reamp later, or tweak tones after the fact without re‑recording. That flexibility alone makes it a studio weapon.

Spotify is about as popular as genital herpes right now.

No one has anything nice to say about the company. Whether its hawking AI slop or making the lives of bands and artists miserable, Spotify has now completed its transition from plucky start-up to greedy, corporate Big Tech arsehole.

Haggis on Toast has a cool video about the many, many benefits of ditching Spotify and going back to actually owning physical music – you know, CDs and vinyl.

I love Russian Circles. I listen to them constantly. I think it’s far to say they’re one of the best metal bands on the planet right now. Premier Guitar has another one of its excellent rig rundowns with the band, so if you’re interested in how they sound so freakin’ good make sure you watch it.

What We’ve Been Listening To This Week

I’ve been extremely ill. There’s some new virus in the UK and it sucks; I’ve had what feels like a mega cold for 2+ weeks now and my head kind of feels like it is constantly on the verge of exploding from pressure.

I have been getting reacquainted with Radiohead, however; the band is on tour at the moment for the first time in ages, so I’ve been working my way through its back catalogue.

OK Computer used to be my go-to, but now I’m more an In Rainbows man. Weird how time changes your tastes.

I also found a whole new level of appreciation for the band’s guitar work, the albums Hail To The Thief and Amnesiac too.

Beyond this, I’ve been loving Blood Incantation’s Everything Everywhere; it’s a heady mix of death metal and Pink Floyd that kind of has to be experienced to be believed.

Get This Album on Vinyl – It Sounds Better.

I think this may well be my favorite metal album of the year (even though it came out in 2024).

I also managed to get my kids into Primus, so that’s been on A LOT during our daily commute to school. Stand out tracks, according to my six year old son, are as follows:

• Jerry Was A Race Car Driver

I haven’t listened to Primus in years but every time I do I always find myself marvelling at Larry "Ler" LaLonde’s guitar work because in a band that is so heavily focussed on bass and drums, a lesser guitarist would wither on the vine.

But Ler always manages to add something so quintessential to each song that without him it most likely just wouldn’t work at all.

Guy’s a genius, so if you haven’t listened to Primus, I’d seriously advise that you remedy that today and this is probably the best place to start.

🎛️ The Great, Big Neural DSP Nano Cortex Fiasco… ⏬

The drama has been HOT with this one.

Neural DSP has a host of amazing plugins for your computer, ranging from guitar to bass.

These Plugins are used by artists all over the world for recording and practice, and Neural DSP has sold millions Im sure.

The new Nano Cortex looks a lot like the Quad Cortex.

We finally saw the release of the Quad Cortex a couple of years ago at NAMM after a lot of hype.

Not only was this to be a modeler/capturer like HeadRush or Line 6, it was going to also seamlessly work with the company’s famous Plugin Suite.

For example, let’s say you own the Polyphia Plugin, the Gojira Plugin, and the Nolly Plugin from Neural DSP.

🚂 The Neural DSP Hype Train Came To Town, Broke Down, Dumped Its Toilets’ Contents All Over The Place, And Then Left…

Well, these would no longer be locked to your computer, they would be usable on the Quad Cortex.

However, this is a promise that has yet to be delivered.

Neural DSP has always been about hype as a company.

Their Instagram campaigns of “SOON/SOONER/TOMORROW” with the blacked-out product has always garnered attention.

But this time, Neural DSP decided to make… mini movies?

These short films have been the “hype” for the new Nano Cortex, and they were not received well by fans.

Guitarists want to see the product and hear what it can do, not watch internet-famous guitar players trying to be actors.

Unfortunately, this is not where the criticism ends.

In the swath of Youtube reviews on the nano Cortex, everyone says that this thing is a “gamechanger” of “the future of guitar”.

The Nano Cortex will work for a certain group of people, but it is by no means the second coming.

Our always critical friend, KDH, did a deep dive into the marketing in a humorous fashion.

Although the video is meant to be entertaining, he really nails the vibe of this strange marketing.

This is a simple product that is not really doing anything “New”.

We’re currently working on a review for the Nano Cortex, and we actually find the product to be quite limiting compared to the competition.

Something like Line 6 (ANY OF THEM; there’s loads of models) has hundreds of effects and options.

The nano Cortex has just a few blocks:

• Noise Gate

• Pitch Modulation

• Amp/Capture

• IR/Cabinet

• Chorus

• Delay

• Reverb (based on a famous pedal)

That’s it.

There are no libraries of effects to scroll through or parameters to mess around with endlessly.

The Nano Cortex is going to be a huge disappointment for people who like to tweak presets and dial in crazy tones.

The flip side to this, however, is that the Nano Cortex is not meant for those people.

If you want a modeler, then go out and buy one. ..

I have always viewed those endless options on products like the Helix as more of a “Toy” than a tool.

You can download amp captures from the cloud for free, uploaded by other Cortex users.

But the Nano Cortex is absolutely not a modeler, and only has 3 total effects. If you want more effects, you need to add pedals to the Nano Cortex

The Nano Cortex is perfect for someone like me, who does not have time to tweak settings in the studio.

I like having a few amp choices, and just a couple of effects in most situations.

So the Nano Cortex is perfect for someone like me, only needing a few guitar tones.

The Nano Cortex is meant to fit on your pedalboard and offer a few tonal options, with your pedalboard doing the real work.

Neural DSP has still yet to deliver on the Quad Cortex promises from years ago, and the recent marketing has become a meme.

I am not sure what the company is trying to do, but if you look at the marketing comment section, even hardcore fans are put off.

So if you think the Nano Cortex is going to replace the Quad, or offer even a percentage of what the Quad has under the hood… you are going to be very disappointed.

If you appreciate simplicity, then this might be the product for you. Unfortunately, the marketing does not make that kind of distinction.

ALBUMS YOU (PROBABLY) SLEPT ON 🤣

There are heavy albums, and then there are heavy and weird albums. Melvins are great at weird and heavy, but Iceland’s Minus really bottled crazy/heavy like no other with their debut album, Jesus Christ Bobby.

This is an oldie, but it’s well worth a listen. Initially released way back in October 2000, the album was recorded when the band was barely out of school, combining elements of metal, thrash, experimental noise-core, and electronica.

LISTEN TO THIS MONSTER

The album itself is totally original. After this record, the band did a complete 180 on their sound, shifting from experimental noise-metal to what can only be described as dad rock.

It was a weird switch, but I guess they figured that if they wanted longevity, they’d need to go the radio-friendly route. A shame, really, because these guys were on the same level as Dillinger.

And look how successful Dillinger ended up!

I saw Minus play in my hometown on their first-ever tour in the UK. There were about 15 people there. I watched them load their gear into the venue, set it up, and then proceed to literally blow the roof off the place.

People were standing around with their jaws on the floor—no one in my small town was ready for what Minus was doing. But I loved it and immediately picked up the album.

Twenty-five long years later, I still listen to it regularly. It’s one of those albums that lives rent-free in your mind. You don’t listen to it all the time or even talk about it much with friends. But every now and then, you get the itch…

And only Jesus Christ Bobby can scratch it.

Harley Benton DC FAT Guitars Review

If you’re eyeing the Harley Benton DC FAT models and thinking there’s not much to them, think again.

These guitars aren’t about overwhelming you with options—they’re all about that raw, stripped-down simplicity that some players crave.

But don’t be fooled by the minimalist approach; Harley Benton has packed a few surprises into these beauties.

First off, let’s talk pickups. The DC FAT models come equipped with Roswell “stacked” P90 pickups. These aren’t your average P90s—these are dual-function pickups.

That means you get the classic, thick single-coil tones you expect from a P90, but with the push-pull knob, you can switch to a humbucker configuration. So, if that 60-cycle hum starts bugging you when you’re cranking the gain, you can dial it out without losing that P90 vibe.

Now, let’s talk about the neck. True to its name, the DC FAT features a FAT ’59 neck profile. This gives you that “modern meets vintage” feel—thick and substantial, but not quite the baseball bat you might imagine.

It’s more of a chunky, comfortable “C” shape that sits perfectly in the hand, making it a great choice for players who love a neck they can really hold onto.

When we got our hands on the Faded Cherry model, it was clear that this guitar is built to impress.

The finish is a rich, transparent red that looks even better in person, and the satin finish on the neck makes for smooth, effortless playability.

Out of the box, the setup was nearly spot-on, with just a minor truss rod adjustment needed to get everything dialed in.

In terms of playability, the DC FAT doesn’t disappoint. The medium jumbo frets are a welcome feature, offering more comfort and ease of use, especially when it comes to slides and bends.

And while the bridge might feel a bit sharp if you’re heavy on palm muting, the trade-off is worth it for the precise intonation adjustments you can make.

Overall, the Harley Benton DC FAT Series is a lot of guitar for the money. Whether you’re in the studio or on stage, these guitars deliver that classic P90 sound with modern reliability.

And it costs just a smidge over $200 / £200 (which, having played one, is utterly bonkers).

They might be simple, but they’re far from basic—and they’re definitely worth a look if you’re after something that combines vintage vibe with modern playability.

Well, this is who the FANTOMAS are. They’re a super-group. But unlike 99.9% of supergroups, they’re actually very, very good. 

And their finest moment was The Director’s Cut, a reimagining of classic horror and other cult movie soundtracks, ranging from Rosemary’s Baby to The Godfather. 

Merging elements of doom metal, sludge, grindcore, and a mountain of special effects and soundscapes created by Mike Pattern, The Director’s Cut is a tour de force of weirdness – but it is weirdness, bottled and distilled and cooked to perfection. 

It came out in 2002, I think. And it still gets played at least one a month in my house, usually when I have the in-laws round and it’s time to leave.

🫣 What’s Going On With Deftones!? WHERE IS STEF…

If you've caught Deftones live lately (outside the USA), you might've noticed something missing.

No, not Chino's belly – we're talking about Stephen Carpenter, the riff-master himself!

Turns out, Stef's decided to be a "strictly domestic guitar player." Translation? He's ghosting all gigs not on US soil since 2022.

But the ‘Tones just did a few shows IN THE US and guess what? Stef wasn’t there either…

Questions, speculation, and rumors, of course, are now afoot.

Let’s do some back story first, in case you missed the whole saga unfold (which started during The Dark Times of 2020)

🌎 Flat Earth, Flat Tours

Stef's always been... let's say, "unique" in his worldview. Flat Earth? Check. Vaccines are poison? Double-check.

I respect other people's opinions and beliefs, but I would feel cheated if I did not get to see the band I paid for because of the place I live. Beyond fan backlash, this is a terrible financial move for Stef Carpenter.

💸 Money, Money, Money (Left on the Table)

Festivals are the most important part of the Summer touring season. These are shows that can bring in 50,000 people for the main stage. While the USA has great festivals, there are few on the total circuit.

Bands make their biggest money from festivals, usually starting in March and ending in the Fall.

You often hear of bands recording in the Winter because the money maker is touring season.

A band like Deftones makes around $200,000 to $300,000 for a headlining spot at a festival like Lollapalooza.

Depending on the venue size and maximum capacity, this figure could be larger or smaller.

That means Stef Carpenter is missing out on twenty to forty thousand dollars per show. 

But this is only the festival money we are talking about.

Regular tour dates overseas can bring thousands of dollars a night as well!

Here's where it gets wild:

• Festival headlining gig = $200k-$300k per show

• Stef's cut = $20k-$40k per show (POOF! Gone!)

• Overseas tours = $$$ left behind

Chino's net worth? $15-20 million. Stef's? It’s likely takin’ a pounding right now; streaming royalties do not pay the bills – even when you’re the Deftones.

Perhaps he’s cut a deal, gone halvsies with Lance for the overseas gigs: Stef gets 50%, Lance gets 50%. It’s Deftones. I’d take that deal. Hell, I’d do it for 10%.

No has any idea what’s going on right now and fans of the band are – rightly – concerned.

🏄‍♂️ Riding the Legal Waves

• Stef still gets album royalties (cha-ching!)

• Live show pay? Probably not (womp womp)

• Endorsements? ESP might be scratching their heads

🍑 The Bottom Line

I can understand the pressures and anxiety of travel. I cannot understand the anxiety coming from a possible lockdown or a "sudden jab". Hopefully we see Stef next year during the Summer Festival Season.

The new album is out soon too, so that’ll need to be toured. Finger’s crossed we Stef back in action soon.

🎸 Yungblud’s SG Junior: Punk Rock, Meet Iconic Design

JACK WHITE IS BACK AND HE’S NOT FUC*ING ABOUT 🔥 

What a huge surprise from a legendary guitarist and songwriter. Jack has not promoted this album in any way, and it was originally only available at his Third Man Vinyl shop initially. The record itself was plain white, with a plain white sleeve that says “ No Name” in Jack’s signature blue azure color.

These were slipped into the bags of unsuspecting customers. No credits on the album sleeve, and most people didn’t even realize they had the record until they got home!

Third Man Records were just giving away this seemingly blank disc. Remember when Jack hid his albums in furniture that he repaired? This stunt was a lot like that.

After people figured out that this was the new Jack White album, he told fans to rip it and upload it to the internet. Give it away to friends, and share it across the world. This all happened before the record appeared on streaming services.

The record was recorded in Jack’s Third Man studio over about a year, between 2023 & 2024. The album definitely features Jack reaching back into the past, proving that his hit records with The White Stripes were no fluke, and while he may have evolved over the years…Jack can still tear down the house with minimalistic rock.

The catchy hooks and roaring guitar riffs that put Jack on the map 22 years ago are here in a very raw production style. It sounds like he just picked up where the White Stripes left off in 2011.

I appreciate the musical experiments that Jack has performed over the last few years, as well as his various bands. But something was not quite right with his recent output.

The reason that The White Stripes worked so well was because of the self-imposed restrictions and rules that Jack and Meg set for themselves. Without that restraint, Jack has strayed a bit from his simple, catchy Rock N Roll roots.

Although it is still undeniable that Jack White has done more in 20 years than artists who have a legacy and ten times the album sales, he hasn't done anything really groundbreaking lately. I think White realized this and decided to remind us that he is, in fact, still the king of blending blues and rock in a raucous way.

“No Name” starts bombastically with riffs and sounds right out of a classic Led Zepplin or AC/DC album. This is a serious return to form, something we have often opined during our podcasts.

Richard and I often said that Jack White should go back to his stripped-down Rock approach. At almost 50 years old, Jack has delivered that in spades. Anthony Fantano said that Jack is like the Willy Wonka of music at this point, doing whatever he wants, always to great success. We agree!

GUITAR RECOMMENDATION OF THE WEEK ✅ 

Fender Player II Series: The Best Bet For an Entry-Level Fender?

We finally got our hands on a few of the new Player II models, and these are priced so competitively that it might be the best pro-level guitar you can buy right now.

Despite the price sitting well under $1000, these models have specs and features that are ready for the stage and studio.

From the redesigned pickups to the specially treated necks; The Player II Series punches way above its price point. Fender has even started using Rosewood again for the fretboards, a feature that has been missing for several years.

We got to play the Telecaster model, and it feels AMAZING. The two models that I got to play felt like a used guitar. It felt like it was already worn in by another player for the last few years.

This is due to the rolled fretboard edges, a premium treatment usually only seen on more premium instruments. It feels like a well-loved, yet brand-new guitar.

Pro Fender Specs For $799

This is a direct response to companies like Schecter and Ibanez that have been making “Strats” and “Tele” models that outperform Fender.

Schecter especially has been sneaky with the Nick Johnston models, offering more for $800 than Fender could at the time.

Unlike Gibson, Fender is keeping up with the demand. Fender has never been a company that relies on a legacy to sell guitars.

It seems that Fender has tapped into the psyche of the younger generations, and now offers a pro-level solution for guitarists just getting started on their journey.

Fender isn't stupid, and I see young people playing Stratocasters on stage all the time. These new indie bands may be a dime-a-dozen when you see such an exhaustive list of band upstarts with silly names.

But those kids are playing Fender.

Take note Gibson, we have told you how you can turn your sinking ship around, but will you heed our warning?

ALBUMS YOU (PROBABLY) SLEPT ON 🤣

Metal is great. But far too many bands ever make it outta the club circuit. This means LOADS of outstanding albums do not get the attention or praise they deserve. 

Each week we’ll be shining a light on a forgotten classic, a record we love dearly that we think you guys will too.

Today’s deep-cut is one of the heaviest albums I have in my record collection. The Lament Configuration by December. The beast of an album was produced by Devin Townsend and was released on Earache Records in 2002. 

The production is insane. I love how this record sounds. From the crushing opener to the closing track, it literally does not let up for a minute – it just kicks you in the face and then proceeds to stamp on you. 

From a production vantage point, it is one of my favorite-sounding records. Everything is so precise but there’s space in the mix, you can hear the room, and like classic metal albums from decades ago, this gives it an earthy, organic quality that just isn’t present on most new records these days.

Either way, The Lament Configuration will forever live rent free on my shelf and get regular spins when I want to melt some faces.
