Welcome to This Week in Sussex Tech.

This week, we gave the SussexDigital homepage a refresh, adding more images and adding greater detail to the highlighted events. The homepage also highlights communities that have a number of upcoming events.

Behind the scenes we made a significant change to the way we find and list events. This has resulted in a big increase in the number of events we’re listing. We now have over 100 upcoming events, including recurring dates from The Farm Digital Freelancers Meetup, Work From Here Wednesday in Crawley, Brighton CTO, Brighton Blockchain and Brighton Data Intelligence Network.

Notable individual additions include EARL 2026, Vibe Coding Workshop for Non-Developers, Invitation to Meet STEM Talent 2026, AI: What It Means for Your Work, Your Business, and What Comes Next, and UXup spring: the curse of "MVP".

We’ve also added a couple of new communities.

  A practical evening for anyone working with AWS or trying to understand how AI is being applied in real projects.

  A simple lunchtime option for making local business and startup connections in the heart of Chichester.

• Brighton CTO April Meetup
  29 April, The Walrus Pub, Brighton & Hove.
  A good fit for engineering leaders who want interesting peer conversations.

• Fragile by Default: Thinking About Digital Preservation in Research
  29 April, Sussex Humanities Lab, Falmer.
  Worth a look if you care about digital work lasting beyond the platform, tool or project cycle it was created in.

• Work From Here Wednesday
  29 April, Crawley Innovation Centre, Crawley.
  A low-pressure way to try a different work setting and meet people around Crawley Innovation Centre.

• UXup spring: the curse of "MVP"
  30 April, The Pump House, Brighton & Hove.
  A timely UX conversation for anyone who has watched a minimum viable product become a maximum source of confusion.

• WorthingDigital Social: April 30th
  30 April, The Old Bike Store, Worthing.
  A relaxed local social for people in and around Worthing who work in, around or near digital.

👀 Community spotlight

This week we’re having a look at UXup

UXup is one of the newest additions to SussexDigital. The group describes itself as a friendly, supportive community for UX folk of all levels, meeting monthly over a beer to share knowledge, learn new skills, network and build careers. Their next event is UXup spring: the curse of "MVP" on 30 April at The Pump House in Brighton.

It’s a nice addition to the directory, especially if you’re interested in the games side of the Sussex scene.

• Breaking Breadboards, 22 April, Freedom Works Brighton, Barts House, Brighton & Hove. A regular local hardware and maker meetup with a more hands-on feel than the usual software-heavy diary.

👀 Community spotlight

This week we’re highlighting another newly added community…

Added to our directory this week, Sussex Games is focused on supporting and showcasing the video games ecosystem across the wider Sussex region, from local developers and studios to the organisations around them.

Alongside promoting local games work, it is also bringing people together through partnerships, education and employability work via SEEN in Video Games. Its first official event, Feast Of The Devs during Develop:Brighton, is a good example of that approach: creating a genuinely welcoming space for the industry to connect in person.

It’s a nice addition to the directory, especially if you’re interested in the games side of the Sussex scene.

🌱 Community spotlight: Green Software Brighton

Interested in building tech that’s better for the planet? Green Software Brighton is a growing community bringing together developers, designers and digital folk who care about the environmental impact of what they build.

They run regular talks, workshops and roundtables on topics like web sustainability, green hosting, cloud infrastructure and the carbon footprint of AI. It’s practical, down-to-earth stuff you can actually apply.

The vibe is classic Brighton tech: friendly, informal, and welcoming. Expect pizza and drinks, useful talks, and usually a pub trip afterwards.

Backed by the Green Software Foundation and supported by Silicon Brighton, they’re part of a wider movement to make sustainability a core part of software development.

Added to our directory this week, Learning Futures Brighton is a friendly, welcoming, and collaborative community designed to connect like-minded professionals, share insights, and explore the future of digital learning together. We provide a space for the region’s learning, tech, and design communities to engage with peers and discuss industry challenges.

Meetups feature expert speakers presenting emerging trends to provide a comprehensive barometer of our ever-changing culture. Join them for lightning talks, networking, and deep dives into the latest in edtech and digital learning.

Learning Futures are planning a number of events over the coming month, they have published “save the dates” and more details will be added soon.
