Step 2: How to Enter a Raffle

Sellers announce raffles on their feed/stories. Each raffle typically has 15 numbered spots. Comment or DM to claim your number. You then pay immediately (usually $8-$15) via Venmo/Cashapp/etc. Oh, and include your preferred hat in the payment note.

Step 3: Build Credibility

• Pay fast. Waiting to pay = unserious person. You’re not an unserious person, are you?

• Engage authentically with sellers. Let them know your preferred teams or styles.

Q&A: BIG HEADS, BIGGER ENERGY

There was a stretch—from about 1986 to 1999—when basketball wasn’t just a sport. It was a cartoon. In the best way possible.

Winning a title didn’t just mean rings and champagne. It meant your team got immortalized. Not with a banner. Not with a glossy Wheaties box. But on a caricature T-shirt. A very specific, very chaotic, very perfect T-shirt.

Oversized heads. Funky fonts. Bench players with names. Coaches in looking like evil professors. If your squad went all the way, they got the treatment. The tee dropped before the champagne dried.

No brand did it better than Salem Sportswear. Based out of New Hampshire but beloved in barbershops across America, they turned NBA rosters into cartoon murals you could wear. Artists like Bruce Starkhad a gift for exaggeration—turning Horace Grant’s goggles or Dennis Rodman’s hair into character design.

As a kid growing up in Chicago during the Bulls dynasty, those tees were currency. I had the ‘92-’93 and the BEST TEAM EVER ‘96-’97 one. You wore one that first week of school in September, and it said everything you needed to say: My team won. I was there. I remember. What’s up.

Detroit had their own heat. The ’89 and ’90 “Bad Boys” shirts? Iconic. Mahorn, Laimbeer, Zeke, and Salley all crammed into a cartoon brick wall. Mean mugs on ten. They didn’t need to smile—the shirts did the talking. The Showtime Lakers got one, as did the back-to- back Rockets title teams.

The last official championship cariacature was done in 1999 for the Spurs by Pro Player, the Fruit of the Loom subsidiary that Salem Sportswear ended up under.

These tees weren’t just commemorative. They were alive. You could feel the vibe of the team in the ink. They looked like someone who actually watched the games had a hand in making them. Because they did.

The future of college recruiting isn't in flashy uniforms or state-of-the-art facilities. It's in a room full of vintage jerseys and historical artifacts. And we're calling it now: throwback rooms will revolutionize how programs connect with recruits.

By fall 2027, every major college program will have one. The only question is whether they'll be leaders or followers.

What exactly is a throwback room? 

It's a carefully curated space where vintage meets victory – a physical environment where recruits can literally touch their potential program's history.

A proper throwback room combines three essential elements:

• Authentic Artifacts: Game-worn jerseys from championship seasons, original letterman jackets from the '70s, helmet designs through the decades, and program-defining artifacts like championship rings and bowl game credentials.

• Cultural Touchstones: Yearbook photos, historic playbooks, handwritten game plans, and other items that carry genuine program DNA. These pieces should form the cornerstone of any Throwback Room.

• Immersive Design: Think museum-quality curation meets modern locker room aesthetics. The space should be designed for both historical reverence and social media engagement, with thoughtful attention to lighting, layout, and presentation.

This isn't just another facility arms race. It's something deeper: what we at Gameday Grails call "heritage marketing." While other programs are still focused on LED lighting and chrome helmets, the innovators are creating spaces that let recruits feel the weight of tradition in their hands.

We're not just observing this trend – we're connected to the very people making it happen. The vintage consultants these programs are hiring? They're part of our daily ecosystem. By December 2027, throwback rooms will be as standard as indoor practice facilities. The programs that master Heritage Marketing™ in 2025 will have a full recruiting cycle advantage over the competition.

I almost went to the University of Oregon. Seriously. Applied and got in and everything.

The idea was, since about 85% of my graduating class was going to U of I(llinois) and the rest were going to various Big Ten schools, I would go somewhere different.. Per my dad’s advice that schools with good football teams had a better experience, I applied to schools like UCLA, Oregon, Arizona State, Texas, LSU, and my alma mater, Florida State.

I told my mom I got into Oregon and was thinking about going and she laughed at me for about 20 minutes straight. The idea that her only child would be thousands of miles away was truly laughable to her. Basically, that was it for my dreams of being a Duck.

Anyway, this jacket is so good that it’s truly the first time I’ve ever had a regret about not going to Eugene.

Q&A: FATHER FIGURE

If you’ve been on any part of sports x fashion IG over the past 6 months, you’ve likely seen this vest:

The hybrid Irish fisherman’s sweater/Knicks jersey is a vintage-inspired streetwear piece…but as you’ll learn from our Q&A with label honcho Duncan McCausland, it’s also a commentary on the current case of sportswear.

(Interview has been lightly edited)

What inspired you to start Father Figure?

I started by making memes and, similarly, modifying things I could access to make them more "me". Anyone who knows me knows how strange it is that I ended up in fashion (laughs).

The cable knit jerseys have been going crazy on TikTok and IG — especially the Dodgers and Knicks joints. What sparked that idea, and did you expect them to resonate the way they have?

Firstly, I love Irish fisherman sweaters and I love New York sports. Regular licensed jerseys have skyrocketed in price while seeing an insane drop in quality and I wanted to comment on that. Also wanted to make a jersey that was purely antithetical to what a jersey should be - traditionally utilitarian and basic, I wanted to make a couture, stylish and plush version.

How do you balance honoring the past with creating something new? I am now Unc and everything I liked as a kid is nostalgic. I just have the ability to make things now.

What are you currently obsessed with — in design, sports, or beyond?

Design: Fire department gear, And1, 08-recession era rave pieces "Party With Sluts etc"

Sports: Mets, Knicks and Jets always.

Beyond: Bodycam footage on YouTube. Battle rap as always (Rum Nitty GOAT). Getting over travel anxiety. I'd like to explore beyond New York.

You’ve built a brand that feels incredibly intentional. How do you approach community-building around your pieces?

It wasn't intentional and I think that is to my benefit. If people like the stuff, they probably have a sense of humor or share my weird taste, and that is the best community to be in. Don't fall for engagement farming parading as "community-building" on Instagram!!

What’s your take on the rise of athlete tunnel fits and sports style becoming a storytelling platform? How does Father Figure fit into that conversation? Any current athletes you want wearing your gear?

It's an authentic result of athletes well-dressed and the natural framing that a dark tunnel provides - makes sense!

The first athlete to cop anything I made was Jordan Clarkson, who grabbed the I Don't Fish hat, so I sent a lil pack including my New York oxford - about a week later he wore it in the tunnel pregame. He brought his daughter, which I'd like to think was a conscious decision after seeing the Father Figure tag haha.

A lot of creatives struggle with being consistent. How do you stay locked in creatively — especially when things get busy or overwhelming?

It is impossible and unending, so it needs to become unconscious and routine. That being said, it is more about being able to shake off inconsistency than it is being consistent. No one is on 100% of the time. You cannot just create when deeply inspired - the details and tedium after an idea's big conception is where most of the magic happens.

What’s one vintage piece (from any era or sport) that’s inspired your work or stuck with you?

I went to the Baseball Hall of Fame earlier this year and there was a Casey Stengel hat from an Old-Timers Game that had all of his teams embroidered around it like a crown.

What role does storytelling play in how you design collections?

To be honest, very little beyond telling my own story and allowing folks to make their own judgments. I think people are beginning to see right through fashion buzzwords, especially if they are being used to distract from mediocrity. It feels pretentious no matter what. Don't be so caught up in the medium that the product and process get lost.

What advice would you give someone trying to start a brand with strong cultural roots but limited resources?

If it resonates, it will grow roots. Almost every brand owner I know started off by reworking or modifying thrifted or found goods. I see too many brands jump out the gate with like Fear of God-style basics collections that say nothing and are a waste of resources on every level. It may seem safest - it's not. Make what you want to make, within your means.

100 VIDEOS LATER 

In the last year, I’ve made 100 videos about vintage sportswear.

That number is making me feel some type of way.

Especially because for years, I was that writer who rolled his eyes at the "pivot to video" conversation.

I built my whole career on words. Had my byline in Pitchfork, Complex, Gawker, columns for the Chicago Tribune, built newsletters that worked, won awards and made $.

Naively, I felt like videos were for “pictures” people. I was a “words” person.

But here's the secret I will now share: I was letting my ego get in the way of evolution.

Adding video to my toolkit didn't replace my writing - it amplified everything I was already doing while opening doors I didn't even know existed.

I turned my cool off and joined Cut30, a program where world-class marketing minds like Oren John demystify the process of making short-form social content and teach you how to make stuff people want to watch on the internet. If you’re looking to get started with video, I cannot recommend it enough, it's worth it.

When I finally decided to press record, my hands were literally shaking. Here I was, a professional writer for over a decade, standing in my laundry room while my family slept upstairs, terrified of looking stupid on camera.

That first shaky video, filmed in my laundry room at 11pm, got 8K views and 11 shares. For context: Grails had about 3500 followers at the time, no paid promotion, and it was a 60-second ramble about how to spot fake vintage. The engagement wasn't from my existing writing audience - it came from vintage collectors and sports fans who'd never read a word I'd written. A year later, we’ve gained over 4,500 followers and a few of our videos have 200k - 500k views and thousands of shares.

Here's what actually worked for me:

• Finding images first before writing. What you show > what you say.

• Scripting my first 5-10 videos word-for-word to build confidence. I did this old copywriting practice called copy work where I downloaded tiktoks and IGs that went viral and literally rewrote out the scripts from each video so I could get a feel for what goes into a winning clip.

• Following female creators. Full stop: Women are better at the internet than men are. Don’t just follow people in your niche, either.

• Edit ruthlessly - my 1-minute videos start as 5 minutes of footage.

Look, I wasn't trying to build a media empire. I just knew there were stories in vintage sportswear that needed to be told. Stories about culture, history, design - the kind of stories that get overlooked because they don't fit into neat mainstream boxes. Turns out, some stories hit differently when you can show the pieces, demonstrate the details, share the excitement in real time. Weird, right?

So yeah, 100 videos later, I'm still learning. Still growing. Still occasionally cringing at my on-camera presence. But I'm showing up, telling these stories, and building something that feels true. That writer who was afraid of video? He's still here - just with more tools in his belt.

Because here's what I know after years in media: The world doesn't need more polished content. It needs more storytellers willing to push past their fears and share what they genuinely care about, in whatever medium serves the story best. The world is getting dumber because the people who can teach and share the why behind culture aren’t pivoting to video. We need all of you to make stuff suck less in the future.

In a very simplistic way, that's what we're doing here with Gameday Grails. Making stuff suck less. One story, one video, one newsletter at a time.

Milwaukee Brewers: Breaking the Format

This spring, the Milwaukee Brewers became the first team in Major League Baseball since 2016 to host a vintage sportswear popup during a live game.

Their partner? Milwaukee vintage institution All Goods.

The activation featured over 700+ vintage Brewers pieces over the two day run, and access was exclusive to fans who had purchased a ticket. That’s key. Vintage wasn’t the giveaway—it was the draw.

Nostalgia turned into a seat-filling strategy.

So, this is how I fell in love with the WNBA.

Twelve years ago, I was grinding it out as a culture columnist at the Chicago Tribune, covering everything from music to sports. That summer, I started watching Sky games and got super into them. So much, in fact, that I wrote a passionate piece about why the WNBA and its players deserve way more respect than they get.

To put my money where my mouth was (and to prove that your average dude wouldn't last 10 seconds against these athletes), I volunteered to get absolutely cooked on camera by legends Elena Delle Donne and Epiphanny Prince.

That day got me thinking about something most modern fans don't know: when the WNBA launched in '97, they didn't just create teams - they created an entire visual identity. Those first eight jerseys were carefully designed to tell a story, build legitimacy, and give these pioneering athletes uniforms actually made for their bodies. Today's issue breaks down how those original jerseys helped establish the W's DNA, and why they're still some of the most sought-after grails in vintage sportswear.

UConn Women's Basketball 2002 Vintage Jersey

Before they were WNBA icons, Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi were part of what might be the most stacked college roster ever. Bird, Swin Cash, Asjha Jones, Taurasi, and Tamika Williams didn't just win - they went 39-0 with a national championship on top.

The good folks at Homefield absolutely nailed this tribute to basketball royalty. The fabric feels like those coveted old-school Champion jerseys, but with modern comfort that makes it wearable anywhere. Fair warning: you might find yourself explaining UConn's perfect season to random people at the grocery store.

VINTAGE WNBA JERSEYS = WORKS OF ART

Before the WNBA had broadcast deals, signature sneakers, or record-breaking playoff ratings... it had jerseys.

But first, it didn't even have those.

In those early promo shoots in 1997, the league's stars were wearing basic mesh reversibles with just "WNBA" printed on them.

Launched in 1997, the WNBA wasn't trying to mimic the NBA - it was building something new. From the logos to the uniforms, every piece of the league's visual identity had to speak louder than the budget behind it. Because the league knew it was fighting for attention in a crowded sports landscape—and doing it as the underdog.

What happened next is a fascinating piece of sports design history (captured perfectly in ESPN's mini-documentary on the league's visual evolution). The WNBA brought in then-NBA creative director Tom O'Grady and did something unprecedented: they invited the players themselves to be design consultants.

In an era when women athletes were usually handed men's gear in smaller sizes, founding stars like Lisa Leslie, Rebecca Lobo, and Sheryl Swoopes demanded better. They tested fits, suggested edits, and helped create uniforms that actually worked for women's bodies.

Then there was the shine. That distinctive shimmer in the fabric wasn't just fashion - it was cultural timing. The same dazzle knit that would later define Iverson's Sixers and Melo's Nuggets and a not-small amount of Y2K fashion made these jerseys pop under arena lights.

By the early 2000s, the WNBA had cycled through uniform providers—from Champion and eventually to Adidas and Nike. But none hit quite like the OGs. Those first jerseys were loud, a little baggy, and perfectly of their time. That's exactly why they've aged into grails.

Today, those 90s and early 2000s jerseys sit in a rare space—between vintage sportswear, cultural artifact, and fashion flex. They're worn courtside, pop up on your timeline, and command serious prices on resale sites. Mitchell & Ness and Nike have dropped official throwbacks because the demand won't quit.

So why does a nearly 30-year-old jersey still feel this fresh?

Because it came from a league that had to make a statement with every stitch. Because it was designed with the players, not just for them. Because it reflected a generation of athletes who weren't just playing basketball - they were changing what was possible.

Back then, most sellers didn't recognize what they had, and the serious collectors were either hoarding or not paying attention.

That world is gone.

Post-Caitlin Clark’s ascendance into the league and the explosive growth of women's basketball overall this decade, those same jerseys are now commanding $200+ without breaking a sweat. Game-worn pieces from the Comets dynasty that used to surface for $100? Don't even ask.

Your best shot at finding one without breaking the bank:

• Set eBay/Depop alerts and be ready to move fast. Also: MERCARI. IYKYK.

• Follow vintage dealers in cities with current/former WNBA teams. You might come across one or two who might not know what they're sitting on

• Seek out vintage sportswear sickos who will curate links for you (ahem!)

Trust us: That price tag that seems crazy today? Might look like a bargain very soon.

THE RAREST SALEM EVER CREATED

There are grails, there are holy grails, and then there's this—a piece so exclusive it essentially erased itself from history.

Last week, we got a DM that left us genuinely speechless. The homie @salemsportsarchive uncovered the vintage sportswear equivalent of finding Atlantis: a Jeff Hamilton-designed leather jacket created exclusively for Salem Sportswear's inner circle.

Let's be clear: This jacket was NEVER intended for your eyes. It wasn't available at retail. It wasn't gifted to athletes. It wasn't even a sample. It was a reward created for the handful of Salem employees who had dedicated years to building what would become sportswear's most influential brand of the '80s and early '90s.

With all that context? This jacket is the ultimate "if you know, you know" piece, before that phrase became a marketing cliché.

What makes this discovery borderline spiritual is the detective work that went into it. After months of research, he managed to track down actual photographs from an ex-employee of Salem. He agreed to share exclusive pics of employees wearing these jackets at company events with Gameday Grails—tangible proof of a garment that elite vintage dealers have whispered about for years but never confirmed.

Think about it: While Jordan was getting his custom JH jacket after the '98 Finals, the people who printed his championship tees were quietly rocking their own Hamilton masterpieces—designed by the same hands but never meant for the spotlight.

"We Got It Out the Mud": How Carlos Foster Turned Teal Nostalgia Into Jacksonville's Most Authentic Collab

Picture this: The Jacksonville Jaguars—a team whose recent uniforms have been blah, to put it kindly—finally embraces their cultural roots by tapping hometown hero Carlos Foster of 89 Los Originals. For the last 8 months, theyve been dropping a teal-tinted series of individual capsule collections harkening back to the early days of the franchise and the culture it built along the way.

Be clear: This isn't just another cynical cash grab collab. This is what happens when a franchise actually listens to the streets that supported them since '95. We caught up with Carlos to talk about growing up in Brunell's shadow, why southern short sets deserve more respect, and how Duval's swagger was always there—it just needed someone to stitch it into reality.

For people who don't know — who is Carlos Foster?

I'm Carlos Foster, designer and founder of 89 Los Originals. I grew up on the East Side of Jacksonville, Duval County. Literally walking distance from the Jaguars stadium — we always say the stadium is in our backyard. I grew up with a passion for sneakers and clothing, looking up to the styles of Martin, Will Smith, Dwayne and Ron from A Different World, Kriss Kross...and of course, Michael Jordan. That early influence shaped how I saw fashion — as a way to express who you are.

You're basically creating from the shadow of the stadium. Was collaborating with the Jags always the dream?

The Jags have been part of our DNA since day one. Before them, we had the Gator Bowl for big football games, but when the Jags came — the city turned up. From the team colors to the players like Fred Taylor, Keenan McCardell, Jimmy Smith, and Mark Brunell...it felt different. We even came this close to the Super Bowl one year. I wanted to bring that feeling back — that energy, that pride. With my vintage urban style, the timing was perfect. 89 Los Originals did that.

The Jags have had some, let's say, interesting uniform choices over the years. Talk to us about Duval's relationship with the team's aesthetic.

(laughs) Man, it's hype. It's passion. The Jags gave the city something of our own to rally behind. It wasn't just football — it was style, it was swagger. We stood out from the jump, from the colors to the players' personalities. That energy is still here — it just needed a fresh spark.

The corduroy short set is absolutely insane. Break down the references for the true collectors out there.

And for the pullover, the shoot was inspired by Love Jones — Nia Long and Larenz Tate.

I wanted the visuals to feel nostalgic but real — like something you'd actually have seen growing up here.

The Jags just drafted dual-threat Heisman winner Travis Hunter after trading up for him. Are you gonna send him some gear?

It’s funny you should ask that! His people were just here picking some stuff up. Man, the whole city excited. We’re gonna make sure he feels right at home.

The 1994 World Cup

When the USA was chosen as the host country for the 1994 World Cup, it launched a plethora of firsts.

It was the first time the World Cup was held in the United States, and broke tournament records with an overall attendance of 3,587,538. It was also the first time the World Cup was hosted in multiple cities.

One of those cities was my hometown, Chicago. I grew up on the South Side and…let’s just say that soccer hadn’t hit our area just yet.

Luckily for me, my dad worked for the City. As such, he had a lot of diverse coworkers, who introduced him to all kinds of cultural exchanges: the band Rush, fun phrases like schvartze and na zdrowie, and soccer.

Always trying to expand my worldview, Dad took me downtown in the thick of it for the kickoff parade.

Like many others, the 1994 World Cup was the dawn of my love for soccer and the culture that surrounds it. I distinctly remember random flashes: guys wearing yellow, red, and black yelling and hugging in the street, flags I only ever saw when we were up thrifting on the north side, my dad chanting U-S-A! U-S-A! with random red-faced white guys decked in the American flag, seeing a guy throw up in the street someplace other than a White Sox game.

Gameday Grails hasn’t really covered vintage or vintage-inspired soccer gear to this point. Mostly, I feel like the space was oversaturated by people who, frankly, have more range than I do when it comes to history and culture in that space.

That changed when I listened to The Athletic’s Full Time with Meg Linehan. I give the show my highest possible recommendation, if you like women’s soccer or quality sports commentary that doesn’t yell at you.

The more I learned about the depth and complexity of American soccer on the women’s side, the more I feel like we could, as a sports-obsessed culture, do better about accentuating the positive history of our national soccer clubs overall, from the USWNT/MNT down to USL/NWSL/MLS teams, and everything in-between.

So, as the weather heats up, we’ll dip a toe into the wild and wonderful world of vintage soccer wear. Want us to cover anything around the world of vintage soccer gear or vintage-inspired soccer brands? Reply to this email.

U.S. Soccer just dropped a retro collection that's a solid start to what appears to be a concerted effort to bring our national teams into the 21st century.

That's not intended as a slight — we genuinely like this stuff! Especially since this is, to my knowledge, the first time we've seen a dedicated heritage campaign celebrating both the men's and women's national teams from the organization itself, not from a sponsor/partner brand like Nike.

The 1950 England upset getting its moment? The ode to 1994? The debut of the USWNT in ‘85? Love to see it. This is exactly the kind of history that deserves to be celebrated and shared with new generations of fans.

Here's the thing, though: For this to be the first round of an ongoing heritage brand, it is missing one of the biggest moments in US Soccer history: The 1998 U.S. Women’s National Team.

They say themselves, “Reflecting on milestones and moments that impacted the sport and culture as we know it.”

Look, any conversation about US Soccer history that doesn't include the ‘99ers feels incomplete. We're talking about a team that didn't just win a World Cup - they changed the entire landscape of American sports. That penalty kick celebration? It's not just a soccer moment - it's an AMERICAN moment, period.

THE CULT OF AUREUS

Augusta National, 1987.

Larry Mize is about to hit the most impossible chip shot in Masters history. But before that ball drops and the crowd erupts, take a closer look at what he's wearing. That crisp collar. Those perfectly-cut shoulders? My boy was DRIPPED in a slept-on golf brand called Aureus.

The Aureus story is fascinating. A brand that went from dressing Masters champions and dominating pro shops across America to vanishing faster than a Tiger Woods comeback rumor. We're talking $43 million in sales at their peak, the official outfitter of Team USA at the '89 Ryder Cup, and a roster of pros that read like a Hall of Fame ballot.

And then? Just poof - gone by '94, leaving behind some of the most sought-after vintage golf pieces this side of the St. Andrews Clubhouse.

A TEAM EFFORT

Picture it: 1978. Golf fashion is trapped in plaid hell, and a man named Edward Manley says "enough."

Launches Aureus (named after Roman gold coins because why wouldn’t you do that?), and proceeds to completely flip the golf world on its head.

At their peak, their roster was STUPID:

• Scott Simpson? Aureus.

• Pre-knickers Payne Stewart? Aureus.

• Chi Chi's sword dance? Aureus all day.

• Mark O'Meara and Ray Floyd looking like money? You already know.

SPEED RUN TO THE TOP

By 1990, Aureus wasn't just winning—they were dominating. Named the top golf apparel maker in the United States with sales exceeding $43 MILLION. This wasn't some niche player; this was the king of the clubhouse.

And then... poof. Gone. By 1994, just four years after reaching the summit, Aureus filed for bankruptcy, blaming "tough economic conditions."

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE

Here's the beautiful part of this story: while Aureus the company died, Aureus has a cult following of vintage heads keeps the flame alive, hunting pieces like they're rare Pokémon cards.

Why? Because until 2020, we could argue that golf didn’t have any “hype” brands. Aureus stands out because you can't replicate that perfect storm of '80s excess, pre-Tiger golf culture, and designs that somehow managed to be both classic and boundary-pushing. Gameday Grails is not some venture-backed operation pretending we have it all figured out. We're the obsessives staying up late researching 1980s production tags because we care about this stuff. WHEN GOOD NOSTALGIA GOES BAD

That's the freshly rebranded Ebbets Field Flannels'—sorry, Ebbets Field's—new mission statement.

Let that sink in for a minute.

Ebbets - the brand that built its entire existence serving die-hard fans who care about authenticity - is chopping off the “flannels” and adjusting their sights on chasing the mainstream menswear customer. In 2025? When brands like Aime Leon Dore, Kith, and countless others already doing modern sportswear-inspired menswear brilliantly in their own way?

It's not that there's anything wrong with fashion-forward sportswear.

What made the brand special was that they filled a gap that nobody else could (or would) fill.

Ebbets wasn't trying to be cool. They were obsessed with celebrating the history of baseball (and eventually, other sports).

The wool was wool because that's what they used in 1943. They served a community that nobody else would touch. They made gear for people who cared about the Kansas City Monarchs' exact 1938 road jersey specifications. That obsession with accuracy made them special. Not Instagram-algorithm special. Special. In a world drowning in fake "heritage," Ebbets was the real deal. The brand understood that authenticity isn't just marketing - it's about getting the details right because the details matter. Sometimes, the coolest thing you can do is just care about getting the little things right.

A Complicated Pivot 

The brand claims they're launching their rebrand with a focus on the Homestead Grays and Josh Gibson, whose stats, along with the rest of the Negro Leaguers were recently integrated into MLB records. On paper, this sounds promising - exactly the kind of story Ebbets has always told well. But there's something different now. Instead of their traditional obsession with historical accuracy, we're getting what feels like heritage-as-marketing-hook. The timing and subject matter are perfect - which makes the shift in approach even more frustrating. Right when MLB finally integrates Negro League statistics and you've spent decades getting these stories exactly right, why pivot to "baseball-inspired sportswear" right when the actual history is getting its long-overdue mainstream recognition?

Let's call this what it is: Private equity doing what private equity does. They saw authentic heritage and read it as "untapped market potential." Never mind that "bigger" and "better" aren't the same thing. They found a brand that perfectly served its niche and somehow read that as a problem to solve.

The Bigger Picture:

Look, we're not naive. Historically authentic sportswear seekers are not a huge market. And let's be real - I get it. When private equity comes knocking with the promise of keeping the lights on (and then some), it's hard to say no. This isn't about the talented designers and creatives at Ebbets today - they're professionals doing their best with a new directive. But that's exactly what makes this situation so frustrating. Trust me, if someone offered to buy Gameday Grails tomorrow, I'd probably be writing this from a jet ski while eating shrimp cocktail.

But it's one thing to take investment to grow - it's another to completely abandon what made you special in the first place. These die-hard customers are getting traded for some hypothetical "fashion customer" who has a thousand other options for overpriced varsity jackets. And they’re not happy.

Also, this isn't just about one brand. It's about the slow death of authentic enthusiasm in favor of algorithm-friendly "lifestyle" marketing. It's about treating real history and culture like just another aesthetic to mine for content.

The irony? If you want to see what real heritage looks like, go check out original Ebbets pieces while you still can. That's what happens when you build something authentic instead of chasing trends.

Huge thanks to @sideline.archive for dropping knowledge about one of the rarest Seahawks Starter white tag jackets we've seen surface in years. Their deep dive into NFL Pro Line history (and why some team colorways are unicorns) is exactly why they're one of our favorite follows.

While teams that were dominant in the 80s and 90s drove the majority of Starter jacket production (aka why it’s not hard to find a Bears or Cowboys white tag online) the real collecting gold often lies in unexpected places. Case in point: The Bucs only got one colorway (creamsicle) while the Bills somehow landed four different versions due to making all those Super Bowls (and yet!).

For the unaware, in 2000, the NFL on-field license was split between multiple apparel companies. Coaches for Nike teams like the Giants, Packers and Ravens had access to some absolutely GORGEOUS vintage-inspired varsity jackets.

RIP Jim Fassell!

They also made a run for Nike NCAA football schools.

So three things:

1. I love these, and they’re slept-on because they are 25-year-old jackets. The Dolphins and Falcons versions are personal favorites.

2. I lowkey feel like these were the forefathers to the Nike Destroyer jacket?

🔥 Hot Take: The G-League is doing what the NBA's "City Edition" program should've been doing all along.

Look, we love a good throwback as much as anyone (maybe more), but there's a fine line between honoring history and simply cashing in on nostalgia. Right now, the G-League is giving us a masterclass in doing it right, while making some of the big leagues' efforts look a little lazy in comparison

The G-League has quietly become the laboratory for some of the most thoughtful basketball nostalgia we've seen in years. While NBA teams continue churning out zzz-worthy "city edition" jerseys that often miss the mark, their developmental counterparts are delivering masterclasses in how to honor basketball heritage.

So what makes good nostalgia? Let's break it down:

When Nostalgia Gets It Right: The Valley Suns' WNBA Tribute

The Valley Suns just dropped a tribute to the original Phoenix Mercury WNBA jerseys. This, and last year’s Salt Lake City Stars homage to the defunct Utah Starzz is one of the only times a men's NBA-affiliated team has honored WNBA heritage, and they absolutely nailed it.

Why it works:

• Authentic respect for the source material

• Bridges different basketball communities

More G-League Greatness Worth Celebrating:

• Motor City Cruise's Grant Hill-Era Pistons Revival: Those iconic 90s teal horse head jerseys? The Cruise didn't just copy-paste—they studied. These are so good, it really bothers me that the Pistons aren’t wearing these at all times.

• San Diego Clippers' Walton-Era Throwback: These uniforms beautifully honor the original San Diego Clippers era and pay tribute to the late, great Bill Walton. It's a thoughtful homage to a significant chapter in basketball history, showing how throwbacks can be done with authenticity and respect.

The G-League's success comes down to one thing: authenticity. This is the basketball purists say they want, served up multiple times a week.

Vintage sportswear has evolved from subculture to cornerstone, becoming a pillar of fashion, sports fandom, and sustainability.

No longer a niche obsession for collectors; this thing of ours is a full-fledged industry with dedicated marketplaces, resellers turned entrepreneurs, and brand collaborations that bridge past and present. What started as a collector's market is now a full-scale economy. From IG Live hat raffles to Whatnot auctions, the game has changed.

We're way past the "what's old is new again" cycle. Here's what we're seeing and why it matters:

Where Events & Retail Are Headed

While mass vintage events proved the model, the real opportunity lies in specialized programming. Brands and teams are moving vintage from the fringes to the forefront, making it core to their event strategy and retail experiences.

• Paris’ "Fashion & Sports" Exhibition spotlights the intersection of sportswear and fashion history, legitimizing vintage pieces as cultural artifacts.

• Tampa Bay's Creamsicle Night showed what happens when teams embrace monetizing their heritage in a non-cringe way. They worked with culturally relevant vintage sellers like JPaulVintage to put together a vintage pop-up, proving teams see the value in aligning their brands with authentic vintage sellers vs seeing them as competition.

• Playa Society hasn't missed a major women's basketball event in years - that's not coincidence, it's strategy. Their much-deserved success showcases how independent brands rooted in sports nostalgia are essential to the culture. Now, they’re partnering with Mitchell & Ness.

With vintage sportswear’s credibility at an all-time high, don’t be surprised if you start seeing more team-sponsored vintage markets at stadiums and more brands collaborating with resellers for exclusive drops.

The Market Forces

While vintage sportswear was already on an upward trajectory, global trade shifts might make it even bigger here in the US. President Trump’s tariffs on imported goods—specifically apparel—have put pressure on retailers to raise prices or find alternative manufacturing options. For those in the vintage world? It’s an opportunity.

• Made-in-America brands gaining traction means that domestic vintage sourcing (think old-school Champion, Russell Athletic, and Starter) is becoming even more valuable.

• Higher new apparel costs = more consumers turning to secondhand markets.

• Sustainability concerns are driving interest, and vintage is at the forefront.

• Local sellers win big, as shoppers opt for independent resellers over mass-produced fast fashion that’s subject to price hikes and poor quality.

As pop-up season begins across the country, we’re hearing anecdotally that some regional vintage fairs are already seeing increased attendance. As tariffs make it more expensive to buy new, the resale economy—especially for curated vintage sportswear—is positioned for a major boost.

The Big Idea™️: What if we used third kits to tell the story of the pioneers who built women's soccer in America?

Angel City FC

Current Kit (2025): "Los Angeles" kit featuring a toile pattern of LA landmarks and symbols reflecting a "diverse, vibrant, ever-changing and resilient city."

Heritage Edition Kit: The return of the Los Angeles Sol (WPS, 2009) jerseys in their yellow and blue colors

Narrative Connection: Look, Angel City celebrates modern LA with artistic depictions of landmarks, but imagine if they could honor the Los Angeles Sol—a team that folded after just one season despite winning the regular season championship with Brazilian superstar Marta. Wild to think that even having the world's best player couldn't sustain women's soccer in LA without the infrastructure and fan support Angel City now enjoys. Talk about a full-circle moment.

Narrative Connection: Here's the thing about Bay FC: While their modern design emphasizes regional unity across nine counties, imagine bringing back the San Jose CyberRays—aka the Bay Area's first women's professional champions who won the inaugural Founders Cup in 2001. Fun fact: The CyberRays represented Silicon Valley's tech-forward ethos (they were literally living in 3023) but disappeared when the WUSA folded, leaving the Bay Area without professional women's soccer for 20 years. Let that sink in. Two. Decades. Now that's what we call a comeback story.

Current Kit (2025): Designed to represent "a menacing alter ego to impose on Chicago's opponents anywhere the team goes."

Narrative Connection: Talk about character development: The evolution from the Red Stars' original hopeful, idealistic kit with the city's iconic stars to today's Stars' "menacing alter ego" design is literally the glow-up of the century. Here's the wildest part: As one of the few clubs to survive from WPS through to today's NWSL (and through a whole rebrand), Chicago's got that dawg in them. Remember when Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd wore those original jerseys before they became household names? Yeah, that's the level of history we're talking about here.

Current Kit (2025): "Cosmic Storm" in purple, representing "organizing the chaotic energy to create a cosmic storm and a new beacon of hope for the club."

Heritage Night Kit: Plot twist: A tribute jersey to the Mexican-American soccer culture of Texas

Narrative Connection: Okay, this one's got layers. While Houston embraces cosmic imagery and purple to signal a fresh chapter, their heritage jersey would honor Texas' strong Mexican-American soccer influence, connecting Houston to the international women's game. Give us a match against a Liga MX Feminil club and we’ll be in business.

Kansas City Current

Current Kit (2025): "Teal Town" secondary featuring a map of KC and the river, with the crest placed over the site of CPKC stadium.
