Due to unforeseen personal circumstances, I need to step back from my role for the time being. This was not an easy decision, but it’s necessary at this moment. While I hope to return to TLL in the future, I cannot make any guarantees right now.

Hurricane Helene and Milton, record-breaking wildfires, and unprecedented droughts remind us that climate change isn’t a future problem it’s happening now. Are we doing enough to address this existential threat? Who are the ones deciding our collective future? Are they ethical? Are they trustworthy? Are they good ancestors? If not, how can we address this?

🤖 Technology’s Role:
AI and tech have transformed industries and redefined what’s possible in just a few short years. But are we leveraging these tools responsibly, focusing on the right problems, and minimizing harm to our planet and society? Dear TLL Community,

For those paying attention to the shifting power dynamics, the influential players, and the ongoing events shaping our world – it’s clear that we're living through historic times. The news comes fast, and every day brings a new bombshell.

The question is: What do we make of it?

Here’s a look at some of the headlines, contradictions, and powerful forces at play as we navigate this pivotal moment together.

COP29: Moving Forward or Stuck in Contradictions?

We’re in a world with endless “COPs” – now, COP29 in Azerbaijan runs until the 22nd. This event is packed with well-meaning scientists and leaders but tangled in contradictions. It’s hosted by a major oil-exporting state, dripping in fossil-fuel money, with lobbyists pulling the strings.

To top it off, there’s already a scandal with Elnur Soltanov, the CEO of COP29 and Azerbaijan’s deputy energy minister, who’s caught cutting deals with EC Capital – an oil and gas investor hiding behind a shell company. Yes, COP29 sits in the heart of “Black City,” the birthplace of the oil industry. Can we really expect integrity and transformative change here? Read more here.

This makes us pause and question the very nature of these gatherings. But despite it all, good people still come together, some refusing to be part of these tainted spaces. Is it enough? It’s hard to say.

What’s clear is that TLL stands firmly apart – grounded in transparency and unwavering integrity.

In the U.S.: Scandals and Power Shifts

Then we have the US elections and the Diddy scandal that exposes one by one the background of big money. The darker revelations in Hollywood and beyond, recent events reveal how money and fame often come with a very DARK hidden cost.

For TLL, these stories reinforce our mission: integrity and positive influence are non-negotiable. We've even re-evaluated our speaker lineup for our next Summit, some were compromised, as we prioritize clean, values-aligned voices.

AI Is Taking Over, But Who’s Really Ready?

AI is advancing faster than most can keep up with. Silicon Valley sees AI as an inevitable future, where every product, service, and even pitch assumes AI integration. But outside that bubble? New York City investors still need AI explained to them. And for the rest of the world, the gap in understanding is massive. Most people don’t even know the basics, let alone how to harness AI for meaningful progress.

Sam Altman recently suggested that if you’re not building on ChatGPT and other major platforms, you’ll quickly fall behind. That’s true – if you’re in the know. For everyone else, catching up is still a monumental task.

Our community, on the other hand, is informed and ready to lead. As we continue on this journey, let’s remember to stay grounded, check our biases, and ensure our work serves the broader global community.

Let’s always challenge our assumptions. Our mission requires us to assess the whole global landscape, not just the trendy Silicon Valley vision. We’re here to bridge this knowledge gap and push for AI solutions that actually serve humanity.

The world is undergoing changes at a pace we can barely comprehend. From climate crises to technological advancements, we find ourselves at a crossroads—facing unavoidable truths about the fragility of our existence and the urgency of our response.

As I write this, Hurricane Milton barrels toward Florida, just two weeks after Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc on the same region. The story is all too familiar by now: meteorologists breaking the news, people scrambling to prepare, homes destroyed, lives disrupted. The Empathy Gap

What’s happening to the world? And how are we to respond? The constant barrage of disaster leaves us numb, while the sheer scope of the problem can make us feel powerless. We need more than awareness—we need to foster empathy. Empathy isn't just about understanding someone else's pain. It’s about realizing that we are all interconnected, and the choices we make today ripple out into tomorrow’s reality.

Why is this happening? For decades, climate scientists have warned us about the effects of global warming, and their predictions have come true, more often than not. But many of us are still struggling to internalize the urgency. Correcting the Stats: A Matter of Perspective

There’s been a lot of circulating information about biodiversity and the role Indigenous communities play in protecting it. A widely circulated statistic claims that 5% of the world’s population—Indigenous peoples—safeguard 80% of its biodiversity. But this figure has recently come under scrutiny, as seen in this article from Nature. It’s a reminder that while Indigenous communities play an outsized role in conservation, we must be careful with how we present these facts to ensure they’re accurate and fair.

AI News: The Double-Edged Sword

While nature rages, technology continues to evolve at breakneck speed. AI has become a pivotal tool in responding to global issues, from climate modeling to disaster response. Yet, we must also acknowledge the risks of rapid technological advancements, especially when AI is wielded irresponsibly. Technology can lead us into an evolved future, but only if we address the hidden costs of such progress and ensure it’s used ethically and sustainably.

The world is rapidly changing, and we might not even realize it fully. Part of the confusion comes from the sheer volume of noise—propaganda, shifting narratives, and endless hype cycles.

Our brains, biologically unequipped to process these rapid transformations, crave stability. Yet, we leap from one trend to the next, feeling more alienated and overwhelmed with every step.

What we need is not more information but the ability to make sense of it.

Constantly chasing new hypes will only leave us feeling miserable, alienated, and incompetent. The Impostor Syndrome, once brushed aside by some, is now amplified by the flood of new knowledge we’re all trying to keep up with.

At the top of the existential threats we face, climate change stands as the most critical. Hurricane Helene’s aftermath is still unfolding, while other regions of the world grapple with different manifestations of the same threat.

We are all interconnected, and our planet is increasingly unstable. Now is the time to act.

One of the key lessons from neuroscience shows that as we project into the future, our brains detach more and more.

The further out in time, the less we connect emotionally. This is a massive obstacle in addressing the long-term impacts of climate change. AI: The Double-Edged Sword of Innovation

Now, let’s pivot to AI. Recently, Yuval Noah Harari’s new book, Nexus, tackled some bold predictions about our future with AI. At the same time, Sam Altman delivered exciting news at Italian Tech Week 2024, showcasing the positive potential AI holds for humanity.

But don’t forget—this is the same Sam Altman who has urged for AI regulation in front of Congress, acknowledging the dangers that come with this powerful technology.

In the whirlwind of AI products launching every day, many are left wondering how to navigate this flood of new technology.
