The Call That Started This

Hey Remote Rebels and Digital Daydreamers,

It was Thursday morning.

I was on a Google Meet with three people I've never physically been in the same room with. I'd rolled out of bed, thrown on whatever was closest, and was blasting CAKE through my speakers to convince my brain it was awake.

One of the folx on the call described herself as a raccoon.

I'm a wombat. We've established this. Armored butt, crushes predators with its hindquarters, poops in cubes. Totally me.

Nobody performed. Nobody pretended. Nobody showed up as the polished version of themselves they reserve for people they're trying to impress.

And somewhere in the middle of a conversation about AI and community and whether you can build something real with people you've only ever seen in a little rectangle on a screen - I heard myself say something I've never really said aloud before:

"For the first time in my life, I feel like I was born at the right time."

I'm Gen X. I spent nearly 30 years in corporate rooms where I was too much of something and not enough of something else. Too fast. Too many ideas arriving sideways at inconvenient moments.

Somewhere around year eight I stopped saying the thing I actually thought. It felt like professionalism. It was an iron straitjacket.

And now there's this moment - weird, unfinished, nobody-knows-the-rules-yet.

I fit.

Not because I changed.

Because I stopped pretending I wasn't feral.

What "Born at the Right Time" Means When You're Gen X

We were the generation nobody was waiting for.

Boomers had the boom. Millennials had the internet handed to them in college with a how-to guide and a sense of destiny. Gen Z never knew anything different.

We got the fax machine on its way out and the internet on its way in and approximately zero instruction for either.

We learned to adapt because we had no choice. We got good at figuring things out alone, in the middle, without a manual. We built workarounds for systems that weren't built for us and called it competence because nobody was offering another option.

Corporate loved us for it. Wrung us out like a dish rag and called it resilience.

And then - somewhere around the time we were supposed to be hitting our stride - the whole thing started breaking apart. Layoffs. Restructures. Return-to-office mandates from people who'd spent two years telling us location didn't matter.

So when I say I feel born at the right time, I don't mean things are easy.

I mean: the specific combination of skills I built surviving all of that - the adaptability, the self-sufficiency, the allergy to performative professionalism, the ability to build connection without a script - those are exactly what this moment needs.

We were trained for this without knowing it.

Feral, it turns out, was preparation.

Gen X is always forgotten.

Maybe that's why this feels so good.

How Each Generation Is Finding Their Feral

Gen Z (ages 12-27) They never had to be tamed in the first place.

Born into the internet, raised on authenticity culture, told their whole lives to "just be themselves." And yet they're entering a workforce that keeps pulling the rug out. Layoffs before they hit 25. AI eating entry-level jobs whole. The career ladder they were promised is missing several rungs.

Their feral is already there. The challenge is protecting it from the machine that wants to monetize it.

What they're figuring out: how to stay real when everything is also content.

Millennials (ages 28-43) They got tamed the hardest.

Came of age during the era of hustle culture, personal branding, and LinkedIn as a personality. Performed their way through 2008, student debt, housing markets that laughed at them, and a pandemic. Got very good at looking okay when they weren't.

Their feral got buried under a decade of survival mode.

What they're figuring out: that the version of themselves they shelved in 2012 is still in there. And it's annoyed.

Gen X (ages 44-59) Already covered. 😏

Boomers (ages 60-78) They built the rooms we all eventually stopped fitting into.

That's not an insult. It's just true. The systems, the structures, the professional norms - they built them because those things worked, for a while, for the world they inherited.

Showing up feral now means something different for them. It means admitting the blueprint has expired. That the rules they followed don't protect anyone anymore.

What they're figuring out: which parts of themselves they traded away for stability - and whether it's too late to get them back.

Different flavors. Same homecoming.

The Shadow Side

The people in charge don't actually care if you're okay.

I know we're not supposed to say that in a newsletter. But it's March 2026 and pretending otherwise feels like its own kind of iron straightjacket.

The fear is real. The instability is real. And the pressure to keep performing through it - to stay professional, stay palatable, stay small enough not to cause problems - that's real too.

When the institutions stop holding, when the people at the top make it clear the game was never really yours to win - the only thing left that's actually yours is you. Not your job title. Not your salary band. Not your performance review.

You.

The ideas you stopped saying out loud. The instincts you learned to second-guess. The version of yourself that existed before you figured out what it cost to be too much in the wrong room.

That's what going feral reclaims.

Which is exactly when showing up feral stops being a personality quirk and becomes something closer to resistance.

Not everyone gets to do it. The remote worker alone in a studio apartment for the fourth day straight. The 58-year-old six months into a job search with no callbacks. The person being dragged back into an office by someone who controls their rent and calls it culture.

For them, feral isn't a vibe. It's a risk they can't afford yet.

Feral is a privilege when you have a safe place to be wild.

Which is why the burrow matters. Not just as a place to decompress - but as a place where people who've never been allowed to show up as themselves can try it for the first time.

The raccoons and the wombats don't just enjoy the burrow.

They keep the door open.

The Call

Someone said: "I don't feel like we have our soul yet."

Someone else pushed back immediately.

Someone said the value is already there - just hidden. Like seeds that haven't broken the surface.

Someone said you can't force engagement. That people come when the thing is real, not when you optimize the onboarding sequence.

And then someone said something I haven't stopped thinking about.

That the reason people love showing up here is because there's no perfect layout to perform for. No polished agenda to follow. No approval required before you bring your weird idea to the table.

Just folx, in rectangles, being exactly who they are.

Four people. Four countries. No makeup. No script. One hour that ran long because nobody wanted to stop - straight into Hangout & Tinker, which, honestly, felt about right.

And I walked away feeling something I don't feel after most meetings.

Like I'd actually been in a room with people.

AI Prompt: Your Feral Inventory

We all have a list. The qualities we learned to hide. The instincts we stopped trusting. The ideas we swallowed because the room wasn't safe enough for them.

This prompt finds yours.

Role: You are a sharp, no-nonsense thinking partner who helps people identify what they've been suppressing professionally and personally - and what those qualities are actually worth now.

Objective: Help me build my Feral Inventory.

Context: I work as [insert your role/situation]. I've spent [insert timeframe] in professional environments.

Output: Start by asking me exactly three questions to uncover what I've been managing down, hiding, or apologizing for. Based on my answers, give me a plain-language Feral Inventory with three columns: what I suppressed, what it cost me, what it could be worth if I stopped. Make the third column specific and practical - not motivational. End with one question I haven't thought to ask myself yet.

The AI does the digging. You just show up.

Go Be Feral

You don't need a plan.

You don't need the right moment or the right room or the right version of yourself.

You just need the next opportunity and enough nerve to take it.

The wombat doesn't ask permission before crushing the predator with its armored butt.

Neither should you.

It's 1AM Tuesday morning.

I've spent tonight working on a proposal that might actually bring some money into our household so my husband doesn't have to carry the whole load. Then a webcast I'm presenting in a few hours that currently has 535 people registered. Then a podcast. Then prep for three discovery calls with potential clients. Somewhere in there I ate dinner and rewatched Reacher for the sixth time because when life gets wild, you need Alan Ritchson to handle things.

I had the best intentions for this newsletter. Started brainstorming Sunday afternoon. Revisited it Sunday night. Wavered between profound and silly. Nothing felt right for what we're living in right now, seven weeks into 2026.

My rule for anything I write: it has to be at least partially fun (I'm addicted to whimsy, what can I say), hopefully thoughtful, and always—ALWAYS—useful. I type the word "useful" so many times I should probably make it a keyboard shortcut.

But here we are. 1AM Tuesday morning. Newsletter needs to go out.

Now honestly, Boris would be totally cool if I missed a week. He's pretty awesome that way. But we're at 79 weeks straight and I'm not about to let that streak die. It reminds me of 6th grade when I set an intention to have perfect attendance all year. Kept it too. Except for one day. Maybe half a day. I supposedly had it worked out with the administration that it wasn't my fault. Never got the credit anyway.

So this is the Good Enough newsletter. The one that keeps the streak alive. The one that gives you permission to do the same thing in your own work.

Because sometimes showing up tired is the most useful thing you can do.

What Showing Up Actually Looks Like

You know what showing up looked like for me this week?

Sending an email without rewriting it five times. Posting a two-sentence update instead of three paragraphs. Saying "I'm running slow today" on a call instead of pretending I was at 100%.

Frozen pizza and refrigerator pudding. Not the thing I planned. The thing that was easy.

Writing this newsletter at 1AM because it's my week and I said I would.

That's it. That's what showing up looks like when you're running on fumes.

Not perfect. Not brilliant. Just here.

Here's what showing up can look like for you this week:

Send version three. The email is clear enough. Stop rewriting. Hit send.

Do the smaller version. Three slides instead of the full deck. One page instead of the proposal. Bullet points instead of the report.

Say it out loud. "I'm at 60% today." "This is what I've got." Being honest doesn't make you less professional. It makes you human.

Keep your streak. Whatever your version of 79 weeks is. The thing you said you'd do. Do it. Even if it's the bare minimum. Especially if it's the bare minimum.

Good enough keeps you moving. Perfect keeps you stuck.

Why This Matters Right Now

It's seven weeks into 2026.

The ground keeps shifting. The rules keep changing. And you're supposed to show up to work on Tuesday morning like none of it is touching you.

But it is. And you're tired. And the performance of being unaffected is costing you more than just showing up tired ever would.

This isn't about lowering standards. It's about refusing to let perfect be the reason you don't move.

You don't owe anyone your capacity to absorb infinite chaos while looking calm. You just have to keep going.

And going doesn't mean sprinting. Sometimes it means showing up at 1AM and writing the newsletter anyway because you said you would.

That's enough. It's always been enough.

The Streak Keeper's Toolkit

Weird small things that keep you showing up when you have nothing left:

The Spite Calendar. Mark an X every time you show up. Watch the chain grow. Now try breaking it. You can't. The X's won't let you. They're judging you. Keep the X's happy.

The Fictional Hype Person. Pick a character who would be proud of you for showing up tired. Alan Ritchson. Ted Lasso. Your favorite deranged muppet. Channel them. They're rooting for you from inside your brain.

The Ridiculous Reward. Finished the thing? You get pudding. That's it. That's the whole reward system. Pudding for showing up. It works.

The 2AM Pact. Tell yourself you only have to do it until 2AM. Then you can quit. You never quit at 2AM. You're already this far. Might as well finish.

The Streak Announcement Voice. Narrate your own streak like a nature documentary. "Here we see the newsletter writer in her natural habitat. Week 79. She's tired. But she persists. Remarkable."

The Victory Snack. Frozen pizza counts as cooking. Stale Girl Scout cookies (the whole dang sleeve) counts as dessert. You showed up. You win.

None of this makes sense. All of it works.

AI Prompt: The 2AM Negotiator

When you're too tired to do everything and you need to make deals with yourself about what actually matters.

This prompt uses the ROCO framework: Role, Objective, Context, Output.

Role:
You are a ruthlessly practical negotiator who helps people figure out what they can skip, what they can half-ass, and what actually has to get done today.
Objective:
Help me triage my to-do list when I'm running on fumes and can't do it all.
Context:
I'm exhausted. I have too many things on my list. I need to make smart decisions about what gets the full effort, what gets the bare minimum, and what can wait without everything exploding.

Ask me:

- What's on my list today?
- What's the actual consequence if each thing doesn't get done?
- Who's waiting on what?
- What am I avoiding because it feels hard vs what's actually urgent?

Output:
Give me three categories:
1. Do It (But Make It Small)
The things that have to happen today, but here's the bare minimum version that still counts.
2. Phone It In
The things you can half-ass without anyone noticing or caring. Permission granted.
3. Let It Wait
The things that feel urgent but aren't. Put them off guilt-free. Include why it's actually fine to wait.
Then end with one sentence: "If you only do the 'Do It' list, you win today."

Not the one you're working in. The other one. The one that's been sitting there since Thursday because you opened it, read half a sentence, and then went back to doing the invisible work of keeping everything running.

That tab is you.

Open. Present. Doing real work. Completely off everyone's radar because you're not narrating your output in Slack for an audience.

Nobody gave you a reaction emoji. Nobody said "great point." You didn't post about it. So as far as the algorithm of modern work is concerned, it didn't happen.

This week, we're not talking about how to be more visible.

We're asking who built the system that charges you for being quiet.

Welcome to the Visibility Olympics

The Milan-Cortina Winter Games are happening now. Athletes from 90+ countries. Years of training. The best in the world, competing on the world's biggest stage.

And somewhere in a Slack channel near you, Derek is doing the same thing.

Derek posts his updates before the standup starts. Derek replies to things in under four minutes. Derek reacts to every announcement with 🙌 and follows it up with "Love this direction." Derek has never once mentioned what he actually did last week, but his name is everywhere, and somehow he got a shoutout in the all-hands.

Derek is not the problem. Derek learned the rules.

The problem is that we're all in a competition nobody agreed to enter.

Remote work sold us freedom from the performative theater of the open office. No more hovering near the boss's desk. No more "face time." And then we rebuilt the entire thing in Slack and LinkedIn and camera-on Zoom calls, and called it culture.

The events have changed. The scoring system hasn't.

In the Visibility Olympics, the medals go to:

• 🥇 First to post the update

• 🥈 Most reactions on the team channel

• 🥉 Loudest presence in a meeting nobody needed

Quiet, focused, excellent work? That's not even a sport.

Who Built This System and Who Pays

Let's be honest about where this came from.

The visibility-as-value myth wasn't invented by remote work. It was imported from offices where managers measured presence because they didn't know how to measure output. If they could see you, you were working. If they couldn't, you weren't. It was lazy. It was also everywhere.

Remote work didn't fix that. It just moved the surveillance to a smaller screen.

Now presence looks like response time. Status indicators. Camera policies. Posting in the channel. Being "on" in ways that are visible, trackable, and easy to mistake for contribution.

This system works great if you're the person it was built for.

It disadvantages people who are caregiving between meetings. People whose communication style is considered, not instant. People with anxiety who rehearse before they speak. People who are newer to a language or a culture and need a beat before they respond. Neurodivergent people whose brains do extraordinary work that doesn't always announce itself.

It rewards people who are comfortable performing. It taxes everyone else.

The visibility tax is real. It shows up as the exhaustion of code-switching into "present enough." The mental overhead of deciding whether to post something or stay quiet. The slow erosion of confidence that happens when excellent work goes unwitnessed.

You're not bad at your job. You're paying a toll that was never yours to owe.

The Lurker's Bingo Card

You know who you are.

You read everything. You track the conversation. You form a considered opinion and then decide the thread has moved on and your point would be redundant now anyway. You have drafted and deleted more Slack messages than you've sent. You attended the meeting, absorbed everything, contributed once, and left feeling like you'd somehow failed a test you didn't know you were taking.

Welcome to the Lurker's Bingo Card. Dab accordingly.

• ⬜ Typed a response, reread it three times, deleted it

• ⬜ Knew the answer but someone else said it first

• ⬜ Got credited for work in a meeting you weren't in

• ⬜ Described yourself as "more of a listener" to avoid explaining the rest

• ⬜ Felt guilty for not posting in a channel you check daily

• ⬜ Had a brilliant idea at 11pm and decided it could wait

• ⬜ "Liked" something instead of replying because a reply felt like too much

• ⬜ Prepared a comment for a meeting and the agenda moved before you could use it

• ⬜ Done your best work completely alone, with zero witnesses

If you got five or more: you're not disengaged. You're not checked out. You're not "hard to read."

You're just not performing. And someone built a system that confused those two things.

The Uncomfortable Counter-Truth: Deb's Story

I got my ADHD diagnosis on Christmas Eve 2024.

I remember sitting in the psychologist's office nodding along. I remember her explaining the results. Scrawled numbers and lines. She told me my processing speed was off the charts. Ferrari brain, she said. And then she pointed to the other numbers.

Executive Function Deficits.

Those three words started echoing somewhere in the middle of that appointment and I honestly can't tell you what she said after that. I nodded. I probably said thank you. I drove home and I have no memory of the ride.

The first thing I did when I got through the door was ask an AI to explain what those three words meant in language I could actually hold. To give me analogies. To help me understand what this meant for my actual life.

And then my brain started paging through memories.

Taking notes in a meeting. Trying to participate in the conversation at the same time. Remembering halfway through that I was supposed to be taking notes. Trying to figure out what was most important to write down versus what the people reading it would consider most important. What nuances was I missing. All of that, simultaneously, every single meeting, for years.

Meetings where I fumbled. Conversations I derailed. Deadlines I missed.

The shame was bone-deep.

I had been through a leave of absence the year before. Depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation. I had spent that year building the muscle of feeling things instead of outrunning them. So I knew what to do. I let the shame in. All of it. I told myself I could share the diagnosis but not the deficits part. Too much. Too raw.

Then I rewatched Twilight.

All of it.

Then I told myself to sleep on it.

Christmas morning I posted the whole thing. The diagnosis. The deficits. The embarrassment. The loop of memories. The part about not feeling like enough.

The people who reached out weren't the loud ones. They were the ones who recognized the shame. Who had their own version of those three words echoing on a drive home. Who had been editing themselves down for years, deciding what was safe to share and what needed to stay hidden.

Visibility isn't just about being seen for your work. Sometimes it's about being seen at all.

That's what the tax actually costs.

The Minimum Viable Visibility Menu

Nobody is asking you to become Derek.

But complete invisibility has a cost too, and you already know what it is. You've felt it. The slow erosion of being overlooked for things you were qualified for. The exhaustion of doing excellent work that nobody can point to.

So this isn't about performing more. It's about spending less energy on hiding.

Pick one. Try it for a week.

The Receipt: After you finish something, post one sentence about it. Not a celebration. Not a thread. One sentence. "Finished the audit. Took longer than expected but the numbers are clean." That's it. You did the work. Leave a trace.

The Quiet Co-sign: Find someone else's good work and name it specifically. "This is exactly the kind of thinking we need more of." Not a reaction emoji. An actual sentence. Visibility is sometimes about making other people visible. It builds the muscle without the spotlight.

The Process Drop: Share something you're figuring out, not something you've already solved. "Still working through how to structure this. Anyone dealt with something similar?" It's not vulnerability theater. It's an invitation. And it signals presence without requiring a finished product.

The Occasional Unmute: Pick one meeting a week where you say the thing you would normally edit out. Not every meeting. One. The considered opinion you usually keep to yourself because someone else might say it first. Say it anyway.

The Async Footprint: Leave a comment in a document. Respond to a thread two days late with something worth reading. Visibility doesn't require real time. It just requires showing up somewhere people can find you.

Small. Doable. None of them require you to become someone you're not.

AI Prompt: Your Visibility Audit

Before you can figure out where you want to show up, it helps to understand where you already are and what it's actually costing you.

This prompt uses the ROCO framework: Role, Objective, Context, Output.

The Prompt:

Act as a workplace culture coach who specializes in remote work and helping people find sustainable ways to show up professionally without burning out on performance.

I want to audit my current visibility at work and figure out what's draining me versus what might actually feel sustainable.

Here's my context: I am a [remote worker / freelancer / team lead / etc.] who tends to [describe your style: lurk, observe, contribute quietly, avoid self-promotion, etc.]. I work in [describe your environment: async, always-on, meeting-heavy, Slack-first, etc.]. The part that costs me the most energy is [name it: performing presence, responding quickly, being on camera, posting updates, etc.].

Based on this, give me:
1. A honest assessment of what the visibility tax is actually costing me specifically
2. Three minimum viable visibility moves that fit my style and don't require me to perform
3. One strategy that feels unconventional or slightly weird but is still completely doable
4. One thing I can stop doing immediately because it's performance with no real return

Why this works:

Most visibility advice assumes you want more of it. This prompt starts from where you actually are. The last two outputs are the ones worth paying attention to. The weird strategy is usually the one that fits you best. And the thing to stop doing? That's the tax refund.

The Room Needs You In It

Not the performed version of you. Not the version that responds in under four minutes and reacts to everything with 🙌 and has figured out how to make silence look like engagement.

The actual you.

The one with the tab open since Thursday. The one who typed and deleted. The one who knew the answer and waited too long to say it. The one who did extraordinary work this week that nobody saw.

That person is not failing at visibility. That person is refusing to pay a tax they never agreed to.

The room is not better when you disappear into it. It's better when you're actually in it, on your own terms, in the smallest sustainable way you can manage right now.

That's enough. It has always been enough.

You know that thing you've been tweaking for three months?

The meeting format. The project template. The way you organize your day.

You keep making it better. Small improvements. Incremental gains.

And somehow it still feels... off.

That's optimization. You're assuming you're close to right and just need better execution.

Here's the truth: optimization drains you because the bar keeps moving. Every improvement reveals another problem. Every fix creates new friction.

Experimentation works differently.

It assumes you might be completely wrong about how this should work. And instead of trying to perfect the current approach, you just... try something else and see what happens.

The bar isn't "did I make it better?" It's "did I learn anything?"

One makes you cautious. The other makes you curious.

Why Optimization Is Exhausting (And Experimentation Isn't)

Optimization starts with: "How do I make this 10% better?"

Experimentation starts with: "What if I tried something completely different?"

When you optimize:

• You're carrying the weight of getting it right

• Success means measurable improvement

• Failure means you wasted time and lost credibility

• The bar keeps rising (today's improvement becomes tomorrow's baseline)

When you experiment:

• You're trying to see what happens

• Success means you learned something

• Failure means you got data

• The bar is "did I notice what changed?"

Here's the energy difference:

You spend three weeks redesigning your team's standup format. You research best practices. You pilot it. You gather feedback. You refine it.

It's 15% better. Maybe. Hard to tell. And now you're responsible for maintaining it.

That's optimization. The return barely covers the investment.

You spend 15 minutes trying standups in a different tool just to see if the format was the problem or the medium was. Turns out the tool wasn't the issue - but you noticed people engaged more when you started with a question instead of updates.

That's experimentation. Low investment. Clear signal. You use what you learned and move on.

One assumes you're close to the answer and need better execution. The other assumes you might be asking the wrong question.

And right now - February, six weeks in, patterns visible - you don't need better execution. You need better questions.

The February Permission Slip

You've had six weeks.

Six weeks to see what's actually working. What you said you'd do versus what you're actually doing. Which systems held up and which ones collapsed by week two.

January is promises. February is data.

And here's what the data probably shows: some things are working fine. Some things need minor adjustments. And some things - the ones you keep trying to fix - might just need to be completely different.

This is the moment to pivot.

Not because everything's broken. Not because you failed. Because you have actual information now about what needs to change.

The thing you've been optimizing since November? The meeting cadence that still feels off? The project management system that nobody actually uses the way you designed it?

February is when you get to stop perfecting it and try something else.

Here's your permission slip: You're allowed to abandon the thing you've been trying to make work.

Not forever. Not dramatically. Just for one week. Just to see what happens when you stop trying to fix it and start from scratch.

The optimization mindset says: "I'm so close. One more tweak and it'll click."

The experimentation mindset says: "I've been tweaking this for months. What if I just tried something completely different?"

February gives you cover. You're not giving up. You're using the data you collected in January to make a smarter bet.

So pick one thing you've been trying to perfect. And this week, try doing it wrong on purpose. See what breaks. See what doesn't.

That's not failure. That's learning.

What Experimentation Actually Looks Like

Not a framework. Not a process. Just: here are things you could try this week that might teach you something.

Flip your meeting order. You always start with updates and end with discussion? Reverse it. Start with the hardest question first. See if people show up differently when they know they can't just recite status.

Kill one recurring meeting for a week. Not the important one. The one you keep having because it's on the calendar. Cancel it. See if anyone notices. See what happens to the work that meeting was supposed to protect.

Use a completely different tool. You've been optimizing your Notion setup for months? Try doing the same work in a Google Doc for three days. Not because Docs is better - because the constraints might show you what actually matters.

Change your working hours by two hours. Start at 6am instead of 8am. Or 10am instead of 8am. Just for this week. See which meetings you actually miss and which ones were filling time.

Ask the question you're not supposed to ask. In your next team meeting: "What are we doing that we could just stop?" See what people say when you give them permission to name it.

Do the thing badly on purpose. That report you polish for three hours? Send the rough draft. That presentation you rehearse five times? Wing it. See if anyone cares as much as you think they will.

Run a workshop with zero slides. You always build a deck? Try facilitating with just a Miro board and voice. See if the lack of polish changes how people engage.

Facilitate a session in someone else's timezone. If you always run workshops at your convenient time, try 6am or 10pm for you. See how your energy shifts. See who shows up differently.

Design something in 15 minutes that you'd normally spend 3 hours on. Not to ship it. To see what you prioritize when you can't polish.

Share work-in-progress instead of finished work. Post the messy wireframe. The half-baked concept. The thinking-out-loud sketch. See what feedback you get when people can actually influence the direction.

Use voice notes instead of Slack messages for a day. Record your updates instead of typing them. See if the medium changes what you say and how people respond.

Invite someone random to your team meeting. Not a stakeholder. Just someone from the community who's curious. See what you explain differently when a stranger is watching.

Prototype in the opposite direction. If you usually start high-fidelity, start with paper. If you usually start lo-fi, jump straight to polished. See what you skip and what you notice.

Join Hangout & Tinker. Show up unprepared. Try something you've been curious about but had no "work reason" to learn. February 11, bi-weekly from there. Low stakes. No agenda. Just: what happens when you give yourself permission to mess around?

These aren't improvements. They're experiments. The goal isn't to make things better. The goal is to see what you learn.

I'm starting something. Bi-weekly coworking sessions where you can try tools, ideas, and things you've been curious about but had no "work reason" to learn.

No agenda. No deliverables. No pressure to show up with a plan. No pressure to stay the whole time.

Drop in for 20 minutes. Stay for two hours. Leave when you're done.

Just: what happens when you give yourself permission to mess around with something that might teach you nothing?

Maybe you want to try building an AI prompt you've been thinking about. Maybe you're curious about a Miro template. Maybe you just want to be in a room with other people who are figuring things out in real time without pretending they have it together.

This isn't a workshop. It's not a masterclass. It's the remote work version of staying after class to mess around in the art room.

Why I'm doing this: Because waiting for the "right" training or the "perfect" moment to learn something means you never actually learn it. You just collect bookmarks.

Most experiments don't get documented.

You try something. You notice what happens. You quietly adjust based on what you learned.

No formal writeup. No retrospective. No presentation to leadership about your findings.

You use the information and move on.

Learning works this way outside of school.

The meeting you flipped? If it worked better, you keep doing it that way. If it didn't, you try something else next week. Either way, you know more than you did on Monday.

The tool you switched to? If it revealed something about your workflow, great. If it confirmed the original tool was fine, also great. You're not writing a migration plan - you're less confused about what matters.

The question you weren't supposed to ask? If it opened something up, you ask it again. If it landed flat, you learned where the boundary actually is.

Optimization demands proof. Experimentation demands noticing.

So this week: try one thing wrong. See what it teaches you. Don't write it down unless you want to.

The data lives in what you do next.

Boris is out. I'm covering the January roundup.

Full transparency: I have no idea what I'm doing.

What's supposed to go in a roundup? Month highlights? Event recaps? Inspirational leadership thoughts about crushing Q1?

I'm a Gen Xer. I don't crush quarters. I show up, wing it, and hope nobody notices I'm making this up as I go.

So here's what I saw happen in January in the R Generation community - the messy, unpolished version from someone who definitely wasn't supposed to be writing this.

The truth? Nobody's coming to tell you it's your turn. Sometimes you just... take it.

I grew up learning to respect authority - but only when it earned respect. When the person in charge is busy, somebody's gotta step in. Today, that's me. The clueless intern with newsletter access.

Welcome to the unauthorized January edition. We're all figuring this out together.

What Actually Happened in January (The Messy Real Version)

Okay, so Boris usually does this with polish and structure. I'm doing it with screenshots from Circle and a prayer.

January kicked off with a retrospective. Marion, Clotilde, Silvia, Tobias, Steve, Rodrigo, Quinn, Maeva (our AI crew), and a bunch of us gathered to look back at 2025 and forward to 2026. Boris said it best: "We're not predicting 2026, we're surfing it." That retrospective was emotional, energizing, and the reminder we all needed that community isn't about rigid goals - it's about riding the waves together.

We launched Premium Membership. Not with fanfare - just with "hey, some of you asked for more structure, here it is." Founding pricing locked in. People showed up. The ones who were ready to go from consuming to creating together.

The Miro Engage launch happened. Jakob Knutzen and Christopher Holm-Hansen walked through the real thing - V1 limitations and all. The kind of transparency that builds trust instead of hype. Because remote workshops still suck in 2026, and they're done with it.

Boris had a birthday. Jakob Knutzen showed up on his teleprompter to record an entrepreneurial journey conversation. Boris's caption: "The real value of life: sharing time and experience with the people you like." That's (R) Generation in one sentence.

Shruti Agarwal dropped an episode on soft skills. Turns out they're not optional - they're transformational. "Even reaching out to someone senior can open doors you didn't know existed."

Adrien Heury launched Suitable Timezone. Because managing multiple time zones is a constant source of friction, and he just... built the solution. No permission. Just did it.

Remote job opportunities got shared by community members. Two AI/ML engineering positions. Open to all followers. Because that's what we do here - we share the opportunities.

Three Expressos dropped. Curiosity recession. Performing fine. Play beats productivity. The metrics were mixed. Some landed. Some didn't. We're learning what resonates when the world won't stop breaking.

And somewhere in there, people just kept showing up. In Circle. On calls. In DMs. Asking questions. Offering help. Starting things without permission. Being human in a space that protects that.

January wasn't perfect. It was real. And honestly? That feels more valuable.

What I've Learned This Week

I'm covering for Boris. And honestly, I'm winging it.

Here's what became visible when I stepped into a role I wasn't trained for:

Most of us are waiting for someone to tell us it's okay. To start the thing. To try the experiment. To admit we don't know. To just... do it.

I grew up Gen X - which meant a lot of "figure it out yourself" parenting. I learned to respect authority when it showed up real. But when it didn't? You just handled it.

Remote work stripped away the visible hierarchy. There's no boss watching. No one standing over your shoulder saying "good job, carry on."

Which means: If you're waiting for permission, you might be waiting forever.

This week, I didn't ask if I could write the roundup. I just wrote it. And nothing broke. Nobody fired me. The world kept spinning.

That's not about being Gen X. That's about what happens when you realize the person who's supposed to authorize you... might just be you.

What Happens When You Stop Waiting

Last year, I was working on a global program building a taxonomy for HR capabilities and skills. We were tracking everything in Google Sheets. It was a mess. Hard to follow. Definitely not working.

I thought: a Miro board would fix this.

So I built it. Nobody asked me to. I just did it because the problem was there and I had an idea.

Nine months later - this week, actually - the organization sent me a leadership certification.

Not because I lobbied for recognition. Not because I pitched my value. Because I built something that solved a problem, and eventually someone noticed.

Here's the thing about unauthorized action: the payoff isn't immediate.

You build the thing. You solve the problem. You move on. And maybe - months later, or never - someone says "oh hey, that mattered."

But the taxonomy got built either way. The work moved forward. That was the point.

Remote work trains us to wait for approval before we start. Business owners just start. They see what's missing and they build it. The recognition - if it comes - shows up later. Sometimes way later.

This is February. Q1 plans are probably sideways. Your team is still figuring it out.

You can wait for someone to fix it. Or you can just build the thing and see what happens nine months from now.

(I just realized that 9 months can be a very loaded timeframe for some… I could rewrite it but nah - Boris won’t read this. 🤞🏻)

The Permission Problem: By Generation

Gen Z: You launched careers on Zoom into a world that kept changing the rules. Every move feels documented. Every mistake feels permanent. So you ask first - for feedback, for approval, for confirmation you're doing it right. Not because you're incapable. Because the cost of getting it wrong feels too high.

Millennials: You were told to follow your passion, disrupt industries, be authentic. Then you got into the workforce and learned that actually meant "ask permission politely and have a deck ready." Now you're managing teams and stuck between wanting to empower people and needing to cover your own ass. So you create processes. Safe spaces. Clear guidelines. All the structure you wish someone had given you.

Gen X: You figured it out alone because nobody was watching. That made you resourceful. It also made you suspicious of anyone who claims they have all the answers. You don't wait for permission because you learned early: nobody's coming. But you also don't always tell others it's okay to just try things - because you assume they already know.

Boomers: You built careers in systems with clear hierarchies. Permission wasn't a question - it was the structure. Now everything's flat, distributed, and nobody's asking anymore - they're just doing. It feels like the guardrails disappeared. Some of you adapted. Some of you are still waiting for someone to draw the org chart that makes sense.

Different generations. Same trap: We're all waiting for something - clarity, approval, proof we won't fail. Meanwhile, the work that matters is happening when someone just decides to start.

Speaking of not waiting for permission...

I'm starting something new. Nobody asked me to. Nobody approved it. I just decided it needed to exist.

Hangout & Tinker with Deb - a bi-weekly, low-pressure coworking hang for curious remote humans who want to experiment with tools, ideas, and things you haven't tried yet because there's no "official" reason to learn them.

No agenda. No deliverables. No performance required.

Just: show up, try the thing, see what happens.

Fixes: Stop Waiting

You don't need permission. You just need to start.

Identify one thing you've been waiting to try. Not the big thing. The small thing. The 15-minute experiment. The tool you bookmarked six months ago. The question you've been afraid to ask. Write it down.

Do it this week. Without asking. Don't announce it. Don't create a plan. Don't wait for the perfect time. Just try it. Messy counts. Half-done counts. "I have no idea what I'm doing" absolutely counts.

Tell one person you're trying it. Not for permission. For accountability. "I'm experimenting with X this week" is enough. You're not asking if you should. You're saying you are.

When someone asks "who approved this?" - own it. "Nobody. I'm just trying it." That's the whole answer. You don't owe justification for learning.

Start something nobody asked for. A Slack channel. A weekly experiment. A 15-minute coffee chat. If it doesn't work, you'll know. If it does, you just solved a problem without waiting for someone else to notice it existed.

Stop saying "I'll look into that." Either do it now (5 minutes) or admit you're not going to. There's no shame in "not interested." There's waste in pretending you'll get to it "later."

Model unauthorized action for your team. "I tried this thing. It didn't work. Here's what I learned." Permission to fail is permission to try. Show them what that looks like.

I have a confession: Last Monday, I was on a call with community leads and we spent 15 minutes discussing which Muppet each of us would be.

Zero deliverables. No action items. Completely useless.

And it was the most productive thing we did all week.

Not because it generated output. Because it generated something we'd been running on fumes without: actual connection.

Here's the reality about remote work: The meetings that produce nothing often produce everything.

The play isn't a break from the work. It's the structure that makes the work possible.

So this week, we're making the case for the most radical act in remote work culture: protecting time that looks completely pointless.

What We Lost When Productivity Became the Point

Remote work promised flexibility. Instead, we turned every interaction into a transaction.

Every meeting needs an agenda. Every conversation needs a purpose. Every five minutes needs a deliverable.

We optimized connection right out of existence.

Here's what actually disappeared:

The wandering conversation. The kind that starts with "how was your weekend" and ends up solving the problem you've been stuck on for three weeks. You can't schedule serendipity.

How Each Generation Plays (Or Forgot How To)

Gen Z: You were told to "bring your whole self to work" and then got written up for being too casual in Slack. Play feels risky because the rules keep changing. You learned early: professionalism means performing serious. So you edit every message three times and wonder why work feels exhausting when you're just... existing.

Millennials: You remember when work had ping pong tables and "culture" as a selling point. But play was always branded, always sanctioned, always with a purpose. Now you're managing teams and you want to create space for fun - but you're not sure if it counts unless there's an icebreaker agenda and a Miro template.

Gen X: You grew up when work and life were separate. Play happened after 5pm. Now remote work blurred everything and you're not sure where play fits anymore. The idea of "wasting time" on a call feels indulgent when you've got three hours of email to catch up on. But you miss the days when people just... hung out.

Fixes: Reclaim the Pointless Meeting

You can't wait for permission. Start small. Start weird. Start this week.

Block "Pointless Meeting" time on your calendar. 15 minutes. Once a week. No agenda. No deliverables. Just show up and see what happens. Call it "Creative Caffeine" or "Chaos Hour" if "pointless" feels too rebellious for your company culture.

Start meetings with 2 minutes of completely unrelated conversation. Ask: What's the weirdest thing you've seen this week? What fictional character would solve this project better than us? If this meeting was a snack, what snack would it be? Sounds stupid. That's the point.

Institute "No Business Fridays" for 15 minutes. Last 15 minutes of the last meeting every Friday - no work talk allowed. Memes only. Pet appearances mandatory. Complaints about the week encouraged.

Create a "Weird Wins" channel. Celebrate the moments that didn't produce output but created connection. Someone's kid crashed a client call and made it better? Document it. Team went off on a tangent about cheese? Screenshot it.

Use AI to generate play prompts. When your team is stuck or exhausted, ask AI: "Give me 5 completely ridiculous icebreaker questions that would make a burned-out remote team laugh." Then actually use them.

Rotate "Chief Fun Officer" weekly. One person each week is responsible for starting one meeting with something completely pointless. No pressure to be clever. Low effort is encouraged. The weirder, the better.

Protect the wandering conversation. If someone goes off-topic in a meeting and it's actually interesting - let it wander. Not every deviation is a distraction. Some are the whole point.

Schedule "Creative Collisions." Random 15-minute 1:1s between people who don't normally work together. No agenda. No purpose. Just "hey, we're humans who work in the same place - let's talk."

How Each Generation Feels It

Gen Z: You learned to perform "professional" before you learned what actually works for you. Every Slack message gets edited three times. Every camera-on moment feels like a test. You were told remote work means flexibility, but it feels like constant surveillance. The performance is exhausting, but you're not sure what happens if you stop. What if admitting you're struggling means you're not cut out for this?

Millennials: You were raised on "fake it til you make it." Now you're trapped between wanting to model vulnerability for younger teammates and feeling like you need to prove you've got it together. You're juggling work, maybe kids, maybe aging parents, definitely burnout. But saying "I can't" feels like failure. So you keep saying "no problem" while your capacity quietly implodes.

Gen X: You were taught that competence means never admitting you're overwhelmed. So you spent years performing fine before you even realized that's what you were doing. Fixes: Stop Performing, Start Functioning

You can't wait for your company to fix this. Start small. Start weird. Start now.

The Interpersonal Stuff

Name your actual capacity. "I'm at about 60% today - here's what I can handle." Most people respect honesty more than they'd respect you burning out quietly.

When someone admits they're struggling, don't fix it. Just say "thanks for telling me" or "what would actually help?" Resist the urge to perform solutions.

If your manager is performing fine, name what you need anyway. "I need to work async today" or "I'm protecting focus time this week" - you don't need their permission to function differently.

Find one person who's real. You don't need your whole team to drop the performance. You just need one person who will say "yeah, me too."

The Boundary Stuff

Block 'reset hours' with zero explanation required. Put it on your calendar. Don't justify it.

Practice saying "I don't have capacity for that" without the follow-up justification. Period. Full stop. Done.

Stop responding immediately to everything. Urgency is contagious but usually fake. Wait 20 minutes. See if the world actually burns.

The Team/Culture Stuff

Make "not okay" visible. Slack status: "Low bandwidth mode" or "Slow responses today." Give people data instead of making them guess.

Put "mental health day" on your actual calendar using real words. Not "appointment." Model it.

Institute "No Stupid Questions" time blocks. Literally put it on the calendar. 15 minutes. Once a week. Anyone can ask anything. No performance required.

The Practical Stuff

Use AI to hold the performance load. "Help me write a kind message that says I can't take this on." Let AI handle the polish.

When you can't show up fully for a meeting, say so at the start. "I'm here but not at 100% today." Then participate at the level you actually have.

Stop editing Slack messages to death. Three drafts is a performance. Send it human. Typos included.

How Each Generation Feels It

You can't wait for your company to fix this. Start small. Start weird. Start now.

Make confusion visible.
Create a dedicated space where not-knowing is the point. A Slack channel called #dumb-questions. A weekly "What Confused Me This Week" thread. A rotating "Ask Me Anything I Probably Don't Know" office hours. The goal isn't answers - it's modeling that confusion is normal, shareable, and not a career risk.

Reward the ask, not just the answer.
When someone asks a question in a meeting, say "Great question" and mean it. When someone admits they're lost, thank them for naming it. Most people are thinking the same thing - they're just not saying it. The person who speaks up isn't slow. They're brave. Treat it that way.

Bring back the 2-minute check-in.
Before diving into agenda items, ask: "What's one thing you're confused about this week?" Not as a gotcha. As an entry point. Sometimes the best collaboration starts with "Wait, I thought we were doing it the other way?"

Use AI to lower the stakes of not-knowing.
Here's the thing: AI doesn't judge you for asking basic questions. Use it as a safe first stop - not to replace human conversation, but to figure out what you actually need to ask a human. "Explain this like I'm new" is a perfectly reasonable prompt. Then take what you learn and ask a human the better question.

Normalize the do-over.
"Can you explain that again?" should not require courage. If someone asks for clarification, don't make them feel like they weren't paying attention. They were - they just didn't get it the first time. That's not failure. That's how learning works.

Institute "No Stupid Questions" time blocks.
Literally put it on the calendar. 15 minutes. Once a week. Anyone can ask anything. No prep required. No judgment allowed. You'd be shocked how much gets unstuck when people have explicit permission to sound stupid.

That liminal space between December 29th and January 2nd where time stops meaning anything. Where "what day is it?" becomes a legitimate existential question. Where your calendar says Tuesday but your brain says "¯_(ツ)_/¯".

The year is over. Except it's not.
The new year has started. Except it hasn't.
You should be working. Except nobody is.
You should be resting. Except you're too wired.

Welcome to the glitch.

This is the week where all the rules break down. Office hours? Fake. Productivity metrics? Irrelevant. The concept of "Monday"? A social construct we've all agreed to ignore.

And honestly? It's kind of perfect.

Last week I gave you permission to have fun. This week I'm giving you permission to just... exist. Sideways. Without purpose. Without a plan for 2026.

This is your survival guide for the void.

Not because you need saving. Because you might as well enjoy the weirdness while it lasts.

The Glitch Explained

Why Dec 29-Jan 2 Exists Outside Reality

Let's name what's actually happening:

Nobody's working. Everybody's pretending. Half your Slack channels are silent. The other half? People asking "is anyone actually here?" followed by cricket emojis. One person posts a meme. Everyone love-reacts it but nobody replies.

Time has no meaning. Is it Tuesday? Maybe. Does it matter when there are no meetings, no deadlines, no consequences? Your phone says December 30th but your brain says "sometime between Christmas and New Year's, I think?"

You're between identities. You're not "2025 you" anymore - that person is done, filed away, archived. But you're not "2026 you" yet either. You're in the liminal space. The glitch. The void. You're whoever you want to be for five days.

The rules don't apply here. Productivity culture takes a nap. Hustle culture shuts up. "Optimize your morning routine" can wait until next week. Or never. Who's checking?

It's too late to matter and too early to start. Any work you do now won't count toward 2025. Any planning you do for 2026 will probably change by January 6th anyway.

And fighting it? Pointless.

You can try to be productive. Force yourself to "make the most of it." Pretend this week is normal and you're a person who does things.

Or you can accept that the void is a feature, not a bug.

This is the one week where you're allowed to exist without justification. Where doing nothing is the correct response. Where time being fake is just accepted by everyone.

Survival Tactics

How to Exist in the Void Without Breaking

Here's how to navigate Dec 29-Jan 2:

Stop pretending to work. If you're online, you're not fooling anyone. Close the laptop. The emails can wait. Nobody's checking anyway.

But also stop pretending to rest. Your nervous system doesn't have an off switch just because the calendar flipped. If you're wired, you're wired. If you're tired but can't sleep, join the club. The void doesn't care.

Embrace the in-between. Watch half a movie. Start three books and finish none. Scroll aimlessly. Make a sandwich at 3pm and call it lunch. You don't have to be productive OR restful - you can just exist.

Let decisions be stupidly easy. What to eat? Whatever's closest. What to do? First thing that sounds less boring than staring at the wall.

Ignore all 2026 content. Every productivity guru is screaming about goal-setting and fresh starts. They can wait. Unless you're one of those people whose brain won't shut up even in the void - then fine, think about it. But do it without the self-improvement industrial complex yelling at you.

Accept that time is a suggestion. Breakfast at 2pm? Sure. Asleep at 9pm? Why not. Awake at 3am wondering what day it is? That's just void life.

Lower every expectation.

This week won't be meaningful. It won't be restful. It won't set you up for anything.

It'll be weird, slightly uncomfortable, and mostly forgettable.

That's the point.

Why December 23rd Doesn't Deserve Your Effort

Let's be honest about what this week actually is:

Nobody's working. Half your team is out. The other half is pretending to work while refreshing the same three websites and wondering if anyone would notice if they just... stopped.

Nothing matters. Any email you send will get buried. Any decision you make will get revisited in January. Any project you push forward will sit untouched until 2026.

Time is fake. Is it Tuesday? Thursday? Does it matter? The days between December 23rd and January 1st exist in a glitch where calendars lie and nobody can be held accountable for losing track.

So why are we pretending?

The narrative says you should "finish strong" - close out the year with momentum, reflect meaningfully, set yourself up for success.

Punk says: or you could just... have fun.

Not productive fun. Not "self-care" that's really just more optimization. Not fun with a purpose.

Useless, delightful, zero-ROI fun.

Watch something weird. Make something nobody asked for. Send a random message to someone just because. Exist sideways for a week. Refuse to take December 23rd seriously.

This is your permission slip.

The year wouldn't let me leave. You're probably stuck here too. We might as well enjoy it.

Not because you need another productivity tool. Because sometimes you just need someone (or something) to make one tiny decision for you when your brain has fully checked out.

Here's what it does:

You tell it your mood, your tolerance for chaos, how much brain power you have left (spoilsport scale: 1-10), and whether you want something cozy, weird, thought-provoking, or completely mindless.

It gives you actual recommendations - movies, shows, documentaries - tailored to where you actually are right now.

No doomscrolling through Netflix for 45 minutes.

Your Challenge: One Useless Joy Thing

Here's what I want from you this week:

Do one thing that brings you joy and serves absolutely no purpose.

Not "self-care that makes you more productive later."
Not "fun that's really networking in disguise."
Not "rest so you can come back stronger."

Just useless, delightful, zero-ROI joy.

Examples:

• Watch three episodes of something you'd be embarrassed to admit you love

• Make a playlist for a mood that doesn't exist yet

• Send that random message to someone just because

• Rearrange your bookshelf by color (or size)

• Learn one verse of a song in a language you don't speak

• Bake something you've never tried before and don't care if it fails

• Create the most specific Spotify playlist title possible

• Text someone a meme with zero context

The only rule: it cannot be productive.

If you catch yourself thinking "this will help me in 2026" - you've failed. Try again.

This week doesn't count. So make it not count on purpose.

Last week, we talked about protecting your humanity from December's productivity demands. This week? We're celebrating how humanity shows up differently everywhere.

Because remote work gave us something most people never get: the ability to witness 50+ ways of being human, all at once, all equally valid.

Your December doesn't have to look like mine. Your traditions don't have to match the person three time zones over. Your way of marking the year's end doesn't need to be anyone else's way.

Different isn't divisive. It's beautiful.

This week, we're not trying to find common ground. We're celebrating that there isn't one.

The Holiday Slack Paradox: When Nobody Knows What to Celebrate

Let's be honest about what December looks like in a global remote team:

Awkward Slack messages. Someone posts "Happy Holidays!" and three people love-react it while five others ignore it because they're not celebrating anything. Someone else posts a Christmas tree emoji and immediately wonders if they should've been more inclusive. Another person stays completely silent because they don't want to explain (again) that they don't do December holidays at all.

The performance of cheer. Half the team is genuinely excited about time off. The other half is working straight through because their country doesn't recognize these holidays. Everyone's pretending the disconnect doesn't feel weird.

The guilt spiral. You're either guilty for celebrating when others aren't, guilty for working when others are resting, or guilty for not feeling festive when the channel is full of holiday GIFs.

The invisible default. Most companies try to be inclusive by saying "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" - but the whole framework still centers Western Christian traditions. The days off. The year-end timing. The expectation that December is somehow special.

And remote workers feel it most - because you can see it all happening at once. The Pakistani teammate working through Christmas. The American teammate off for two weeks. The Brazilian teammate celebrating something entirely different. The Japanese teammate wondering why everyone's acting like the calendar is ending when their New Year happens later.

How do you honor December without centering one story? How do you acknowledge rest without religious framing? How do you celebrate people without assuming everyone's celebrating the same things?

You start by admitting: there is no one "right" December.

There's just 50+ versions of it, happening simultaneously, all equally valid.

Here's what makes R Generation different from every other remote work community:

We don't pretend there's a template.

We're not selling you "the remote work playbook" or "the one true way to build culture." We're 50+ countries figuring it out together - messily, beautifully, with all our differences on full display.

And December proves why that matters.

When you work in an office, everyone defaults to the dominant culture. The holidays on the calendar. The traditions in the break room. The way "everyone" does year-end celebrations. You assimilate or you opt out quietly.

But remote work broke that default.

Now you're on a Zoom with someone in Mumbai, someone in São Paulo, someone in Lagos, someone in Melbourne. And December looks completely different to all of them. There's no dominant culture to default to. There's just... all of us, showing up human in different ways.

That's not a bug. That's the feature.

Remote work - especially global remote work - means you get to witness humanity in all its forms. Not the sanitized, corporate-approved version. The real version. The messy, contradictory, infinitely varied version.

You learn that "presence" doesn't always mean showing up on camera. That "connection" happens in a thousand different ways. That "hope" takes different shapes depending on where you're standing.

This is what we're building: a community where different doesn't need to be reconciled. Where your way of being human and my way of being human can coexist without one being "right" and the other being "other."

December is our annual reminder that we're doing something most workplaces can't: celebrating difference instead of erasing it.

Your December Looks Different Than Mine (And That's Perfect)

Let me show you what 50+ countries of humanity actually looks like:

In the Philippines, December starts in September. Simbang Gabi masses begin before dawn. Christmas isn't one day - it's a season, loud and joyful and impossibly long by anyone else's standards.

In Japan, December 25th means KFC and Christmas cake, but it's not a holiday. New Year's is what matters - visiting shrines, sending cards, eating toshikoshi soba for longevity. The year turns over quietly, deliberately.

In Sweden, December 13th is St. Lucia Day - children wear candles in their hair (somehow safely), singing in the dark. It's about light returning, not about any particular religion anymore.

In India, December might mean nothing special, or it might overlap with Diwali's afterglow, or it might just be wedding season. The Western calendar's ending doesn't dictate the year's rhythm.

In Mexico, Las Posadas reenact Mary and Joseph's journey for nine nights. Piñatas. Tamales. Community showing up for each other in ways that have nothing to do with gifts under trees.

In South Africa, December is summer. Braais on the beach. Swimming on Christmas Day. The whole "winter holiday" framing makes zero sense when you're sweating through it.

And for some people? December is just... December. Another month. Another set of deadlines. Another rotation of the earth that doesn't require special meaning or celebration or acknowledgment at all.

All of these are correct.

Not "all of these are valid despite their differences." Not "we should respect each other's traditions even though they're not ours."

All of these are just... how humans do December. Period.

This is what you get when you work remotely with people from everywhere: proof that there's no default human experience. There's just your experience and mine and theirs, all happening at once, all mattering equally.

How to Honor December Without Centering One Story

Okay, so how do you actually DO this? How do you acknowledge that December exists without making it weird for half your team?

Here's what NOT to do:

❌ "Happy Holidays to those who celebrate!" (Translation: Christmas is the default, but we're being polite about it)
❌ Decorating the virtual background with Christmas trees and calling it "festive" (Whose festive?)
❌ Scheduling the "holiday party" on December 20th (Whose holiday?)
❌ Giving everyone December 25th off and calling it "inclusive time off" (Still centering one tradition)

Here's what actually works:

✅ Acknowledge rest without religious framing. "We're slowing down in late December" beats "Happy Holidays." It's honest. It's neutral. It doesn't pretend everyone's celebrating the same thing.

✅ Let people name their own. "What does December look like for you?" Instead of assuming, ask. Let people share if they want. Don't make it mandatory cultural show-and-tell.

✅ Distribute the visibility. If you're posting about Christmas, also post about Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, Omisoka, Pancha Ganapati, HumanLight - or better yet, create space for people to share what matters to them without you curating it.

✅ Separate "year-end" from "holidays." Reflecting on the year doesn't require a religious framework. Resting doesn't require a holiday. Planning for 2026 doesn't need to be tied to any particular tradition.

✅ Make time off actually flexible. If your company shuts down for Christmas week, you've just told everyone which holiday matters most. Give people choice about when they take December time off - or don't take it at all.

✅ Stop performing cheer. Not everyone feels festive. Not everyone wants to. A simple "December vibes to all who need them, and regular Tuesday vibes to everyone else" goes further than forced jolliness.

The goal isn't to celebrate everything equally. That's exhausting and performative.

The goal is to stop defaulting to one thing and calling it universal.

Here's what I want from you:

Share one way December shows up for you that's uniquely yours.

Not to educate the rest of us. Not to justify your tradition or explain its history. Just to be witnessed by this community.

Maybe it's:

• A food your family makes that nobody else has heard of

• A way you mark the year's end that has nothing to do with holidays

• A ritual you've invented that's just yours

• A belief you hold about this time of year that doesn't fit anyone else's framework

• The fact that December is just another month and that's perfectly fine

This isn't cultural exchange. This is human witnessing.

We're not trying to learn about each other's traditions so we can be "good global citizens." We're just... seeing each other. Acknowledging that your way of being human exists. That it matters. That it doesn't need to be translated or explained or made palatable.

You exist. Your December exists. That's enough.

This is my last newsletter of 2025, and I’m saying: thank you for letting me be weird here.

When I started writing ☕️ (R)emote Expresso in March, I had no idea what I was doing. I'd never written a newsletter that wasn't corporate communications. I didn't know if anyone would read it. I definitely didn't know if my voice - the sass, the rebellion, the questionable metaphors - would land.

But you showed up. You read. You replied. You told me when something resonated and when I missed the mark. You made weird feel like home.

This year, I learned that my strength isn't in having all the answers - it's in asking better questions and creating space for all of us to figure it out together. That's what this community does. That's what you do.

So as we close out 2025: You don't owe anyone a strong finish. You don't need a perfect plan for 2026. You don't have to optimize your way into the new year.

You just have to stay human. And from what I've seen in this community - across 50+ countries, infinite time zones, and more Slack channels than any of us can keep up with - you're already doing that beautifully.

Finish strong. Plan for 2026. Be grateful. Celebrate the holidays. Close out Q4. Reflect on your wins. Set intentions. Show up for your team. Show up for your family. Don't burn out. But also don't slow down.

What if you just... refused?

Not all of it. Just the parts that ask you to be a machine instead of a human.

Because here's what nobody's saying: The best thing about you isn't how productive you are. It's that you're human. And December - chaotic, messy, contradictory December - is the perfect time to remember that.

This week, we're not optimizing. We're not finishing strong. We're protecting what makes us irreplaceable: our humanity.

And MIT Sloan has the research to prove it matters.

The Productivity Trap: When December Asks for Everything

Let's be honest about what December actually is:

A month-long performance review of your entire year - except you're supposed to smile through it while wearing a festive sweater.

You're expected to:

• Close out projects that were never going to close

• Attend year-end celebrations you're too tired to enjoy

• Reflect meaningfully on 12 months you can barely remember

• Plan strategically for a future that feels impossible to imagine

• Be present for loved ones while your brain is still at work

• Feel grateful (but not too burned out to show it)

And if you're remote? Add "prove you were productive all year despite working in pajamas" to the list.

The world wants you to be a gratitude-generating, goal-setting, party-attending, insight-having productivity machine.

You are not a machine.

You're a human. And humans - especially remote workers navigating global time zones, blurred boundaries, and the constant hum of notifications - need permission to just... be.

Not optimized. Not efficient. Just human.

That's what this issue is about. That's what December should protect.

Why It Matters (R Generation Context)

Humanity > Machinery: The EPOCH Framework

Here's something you need to know: MIT Sloan just proved your humanity is your superpower.

In 2024, researchers Isabella Loaiza and Roberto Rigobon published "The EPOCH of AI: Human-Machine Complementarities at Work." They asked a different question than everyone else: Not "what will AI replace?" but "what human capabilities does AI suck at?"

Their answer? Five categories of uniquely human skills that machines can't replicate - organized into the acronym EPOCH:

E - Empathy and Emotional Intelligence
P - Presence
O - Opinion (subjective beliefs, ethical judgment)
C - Creativity
H - Hope, Vision, and Leadership

These aren't "soft skills." They're hard-to-teach, impossible-to-automate, absolutely critical human capabilities.

And here's the truth: Between 2016 and 2024, jobs requiring high EPOCH capabilities grew. Tasks requiring these skills became more frequent. The future of work isn't about being more machine-like - it's about being more human.

Why this matters for R Generation:

We're a global community of remote workers who already know that connection beats optimization. That psychological safety matters more than productivity metrics. That your weird is your strength.

EPOCH is proof we've been right all along.

Your empathy, your creativity, your ability to show up fully present, your deeply held beliefs, your hope for what's possible - these are what make you irreplaceable.

Not your two-minute Slack response time, your color-coded calendar, or your "always on" green dot.

Your humanity.

What Makes You Human (That AI Can't Touch)

Let's get specific about what you're protecting this December:

E - Empathy and Emotional Intelligence

AI can detect emotions. You can share them. You can sit with someone's pain, celebrate their weird win, or read between the lines of a Slack message that says "I'm fine" when they're not.

When did you last: Connect with someone just because - not for networking, not for a project, just because they matter?

P - Presence

AI is always available. You can be fully there. Not multitasking through a meeting. Not half-listening while writing an email. Just... present. All in. Witnessing another human.

When did you last: Show up somewhere (virtually or physically) and give someone your complete, undivided attention?

O - Opinion (Subjective Beliefs & Ethical Judgment)

AI follows data. You follow conviction. You can believe something should happen even when the metrics don't support it. You can make decisions based on principle, not just probability.

When did you last: Stand for something that couldn't be justified by a spreadsheet?

C - Creativity

AI remixes existing patterns. You imagine what doesn't exist yet. You create for the joy of it. You make things nobody asked for that turn out to matter anyway.

When did you last: Make something with zero ROI - just because you wanted to see if you could?

H - Hope, Vision, and Leadership

AI can't inspire. You can imagine a better future and bring others along. You can hold hope when data says it's impossible. You can lead with vision that transcends metrics.

When did you last: inspire someone else to believe in a future they couldn't yet see?

These five capabilities? They're what separate you from a very sophisticated algorithm.

And December is trying to steal them from you - one "urgent" request at a time.

How Each Generation Loses Their EPOCH

Gen Z: You're told to "bring your whole self to work" - but only the parts that are productive, optimistic, and constantly creating content. Your creativity gets weaponized into "personal brand." Your presence becomes "always-on availability." You're performing humanity instead of living it.

Millennials: You're juggling caregiving, side hustles, and full-time jobs while pretending you have infinite capacity. Your empathy gets exploited ("you're so good with people - can you handle this too?"). Your hope turned into cynicism somewhere between 2008 and the pandemic. You're running on fumes but still showing up.

Gen X: You fought for autonomy and finally got it - and now it feels like isolation. Your presence is questioned because you're not "visible enough." Your opinion (the one you spent decades forming) gets dismissed as "not data-driven." You're tired of proving you're working when you're clearly working.

Boomers: You built your career on leadership and vision, and now remote work makes you feel like you're shouting into the void. Your hope for meaningful work is clashing with tools that feel designed to replace you. You're wondering if your hard-won wisdom even matters anymore.

Different struggles. Same pressure to be less human.

December doesn't care which generation you are. It still asks you to trade your EPOCH - the parts of you that make you human, irreplaceable, essential - for productivity metrics that don't actually measure what matters.

Your Useless Human Experiment

Here's your December challenge: Do one thing that exercises your EPOCH capabilities and has absolutely zero productivity value.

Not "networking." Not "skill-building." Not "personal development."

Just... human stuff. For no reason except that you're human and you can.

Pick ONE EPOCH capability and try one of these experiments:

Empathy: Send a message to someone just to say "I see you." No ask. No agenda. Just witnessing.

Presence: Declare one hour this week where you're fully present - no phone, no multitasking, just being with one person or one activity.

Opinion: Take a stand on something at work that matters to you, even if you can't justify it with data. "I believe this is right" is enough.

Creativity: Make something nobody asked for. A playlist. A doodle. A weird Slack emoji. Anything that serves no purpose but joy.

Hope: Share one thing you hope for in 2026 that sounds impossible. Say it out loud. Mean it.

The rules:

• It must be useless (from a productivity standpoint)

• It must be human (something AI couldn't fake)

• It must bring you back to yourself

This isn't self-care. This is self-preservation.

When you protect your EPOCH, you protect what makes you irreplaceable.

Find What You Let Go Of (Before You Got "Practical")

You know that part of you that went quiet when adulthood got loud? The one who had interests, hobbies, ways of being that didn't "make sense" to keep doing?

This prompt helps you remember her.

Not so you can turn it into a business. Not so you can monetize your hobby. Just so you can see what you misplaced when you decided to be sensible.

Role 

You are a thoughtful guide who helps people reconnect with parts of themselves they've set aside.

Objective 

Help me remember activities, interests, or ways of being that I used to love but stopped doing when life got busy or I decided to be "practical."

Context 

I'm in midlife/midcareer and I've spent years being responsible, sensible, doing what I "should" do. But there's a part of me that feels lost or dimmed. I want to remember what I used to do or love before I convinced myself it didn't matter or wasn't productive enough.

Ask me these questions ONE AT A TIME (wait for my answer before asking the next):

What did you used to do in your free time that you don't do anymore?

What activity made you lose track of time before you had to be "on" all the time?

What did people compliment you on or ask you about that you brushed off as "just a hobby"?

What did you stop doing because someone said it was impractical, silly, or wouldn't lead anywhere?

If you had a completely free Saturday with no obligations and no one watching - what would younger-you have done?

Output 

After I answer all 5 questions, show me:

In November, Ricardo Luiz demonstrated how AI can accelerate product design— without sacrificing user empathy. Here’s what happened when 75+ professionals prototyped an app in 60 minutes using Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Lovable.

Ricardo started by debunking a myth: "AI won’t replace designers—it’ll make them faster." The session kicked off with a live demo of how to use AI for user research, generating insights from raw data in minutes. Participants then split into breakout rooms to prototype solutions for real-world challenges (like onboarding flows for remote teams). The energy was palpable as teams iterated on wireframes, debated trade-offs, and refined their prototypes with Ricardo’s guidance.

🎭 How Each Generation Hoards (Without Meaning To)

Gen Z: You share everything online - except the work stuff that actually matters. You'll post your morning routine but not the boundary script that got your manager to stop Slacking you at 10pm. Why? You're still not sure you deserve to have boundaries in the first place.

Millennials: You hoard because you fought so hard for what you have. Why would you give away the competitive advantage you earned? But here's the thing: your "advantage" only exists because everyone else is still stuck. Share it, and you change the game for everyone.

Gen X: You learned to keep your head down and your secrets close. Survival meant not making waves. Why would you teach others the shortcuts you figured out alone? Because you're tired of watching people suffer through what you already solved.

Boomers: You built expertise over decades - why give it away for free? But here's what you know that others don't: Knowledge shared doesn't diminish. It compounds. And legacy isn't what you keep - it's what you pass on.

Different reasons. Same result: The rebellion stays small.

🎁 What's Worth Sharing (Your Stolen Goods Inventory)

Here's what needs to escape your hard drive and get into someone else's hands:

Your boundary scripts.
The exact words you use to decline meetings, protect focus time, or push back on "quick syncs." Don't make everyone reinvent the wheel.

Your Slack statuses that actually work.
"🎧 Deep work until 2pm - will check messages after" beats "busy" every time. Share the ones that hold.

Your meeting templates.
The async check-in format. The agenda that keeps things under 30 minutes. The retrospective that doesn't waste time.

Your work rhythms.
When you do your best thinking. How you structure deep work. What your "ideal week" actually looks like - not the aspirational version, the real one.

Your permission slips.
The mental frameworks that let you say no without guilt. The reminders you keep on your wall. The mantras that work.

Your async workflows.
How you run projects without meetings. How you make decisions in threads. How you keep momentum without constant check-ins.

Your "this could've been an email" filter.
The checklist you use before scheduling anything. Share it. Please.

These aren't secrets. They're survival tools.
And someone else is drowning without them.

🌊 Why Sharing Makes You Safer (Not Weaker)

Here's the part that feels backwards: Giving away your boundaries actually protects them.

When you're the only one with strong boundaries, you're the outlier. The difficult one. The person who "doesn't get how things work here."

But when everyone has your boundary script? When half the team is using your Slack status? When your meeting template becomes the default?

Your boundaries become culture.

And culture is a hell of a lot harder to push back against than one person's "preferences."

Collective defense beats solo resistance every time.

When five people decline the 8pm meeting, it's not rebellion - it's a pattern. When three people ask "can this be async?" in every standup, it stops being a question and starts being policy.

Your stolen goods aren't your competitive advantage. They're your backup.

The more people who have them, the safer you are. The harder it becomes for corporate culture to claw anything back from anyone.

Share your templates. Normalize your boundaries. Make your rebellion contagious.

🛠️ How to Actually Share It (The Practical Part)

Don't overthink this. You don't need a course or a brand. Just share the thing.

In your team Slack:
"Here's the meeting decline template I use. Feel free to steal it."
Drop it in a thread. Pin it to the channel. Make it easy to copy.

In a Notion doc:
Create a "Stolen Goods" page. Boundary scripts, async workflows, meeting templates - whatever worked for you. Make it public. Let people remix it.

On LinkedIn:
"Here's the exact Slack status that bought me 3 hours of focus time every day." Post it. Tag it. Let it spread.

In your next 1:1:
"Want to see how I structure my week?" Share your calendar. Show the blocks. Explain the system. Give permission to copy it.

In community spaces:
Drop your templates in Circle, Discord, or wherever your people gather. Don't ask if anyone wants it - just leave it there like a breadcrumb trail.

Make it remix-able:
Don't say "this is how you should do it." Say "this is what worked for me - take what's useful, leave the rest."

The goal isn't perfection. It's proliferation.

Put it where people can find it. Let them steal it. Watch what happens when your rebellion becomes their blueprint.

"Recommended" anything.
Core hours. Office days. Meeting attendance. When "recommended" shows up, mandatory is 6 weeks behind it.

Gentle check-ins that aren't gentle.
"Just wanted to see how you're doing!" that's really "Why weren't you on Slack at 4pm yesterday?"

The slow meeting creep.

Document your boundaries - in writing.

Anchor it: Update your Slack status. Block your calendar. Make it official before anyone can claim they "didn't know."

Practice the non-negotiable "no."
Not "I can't, I have a conflict." Just "That doesn't work for me."
Not "Sorry, but..." Just "I'm not available then."
The more you explain, the more they negotiate.

Anchor it: Script it once. Use it everywhere. Let it feel weird the first five times.

When they push: "Can you join this 8pm call?"
