🧠 Inventor Tip of the Week: Know What the Money Is For

Before you ask anyone for funding, write down the answer to this question:

Not generally.

Specifically.

For example:

• Build a working prototype

• File intellectual property

• Pay for a professional patent search

• Create CAD drawings

• Pay for tooling

• Order first inventory

• Build packaging

• Test ads

• Launch a small production run

• Hire legal or business support

• Prepare for retail, licensing, or manufacturing

If you cannot explain how the money will be used, an investor may not feel confident giving it to you.

And more importantly, you may not be ready to take it.

Investors are not just investing in an idea.

They are looking at the opportunity around the idea.

The market.
The customer.
The numbers.
The protection.
The plan.
The founder.
The path forward.

That does not mean you need to have everything perfect.

But you should know where you stand.

📋 Before You Say Yes: A Simple Inventor Checklist

Use this before any serious investor conversation.

1. What problem does your invention solve?

Keep it simple.

What is annoying, difficult, unsafe, messy, expensive, slow, or inconvenient?

2. Who is the customer?

Do not just say “everyone.”

Is it parents? Golfers? Pet owners? Contractors? Homeowners? Seniors? Travelers? Retail buyers? A niche market?

3. What already exists?

Search online. Search stores. Search Amazon. Search Google Images. Search Google Patents. Look at competing products and related products.

You want to know what is out there before someone else points it out to you.

4. What makes your idea different?

Better design? Better function? Lower cost? Easier use? New market? Better packaging? Stronger brand? New application?

5. What protection do you have?

Do you have a provisional patent application, design patent, utility patent, trademark, NDA strategy, or attorney guidance?

Do not guess here.

Know what you have.

6. What stage are you in?

Idea only? Sketch? Prototype? CAD? Working sample? Finished product? Sales? Retail interest? Licensing conversations?

Different stages need different types of support.

7. What do you need money for?

If the answer is “everything,” get more specific.

Break it down by cost, priority, and timeline.

8. What are you willing to give up?

Equity? Royalties? Control? Decision-making rights? Exclusive rights? A percentage of the company?

This is where inventors need to pay close attention.

9. Who is reviewing the deal?

Before signing anything, bring in the right professional.

A good attorney, advisor, or qualified consultant can help you understand what is actually in the agreement.

10. Is investment the best path?

Maybe.

But maybe your best path is licensing.
Maybe it is a small test run.
Maybe it is crowdfunding.
Maybe it is a strategic partner.
Maybe it is waiting until you have more proof.

The goal is not just to get money.

The goal is to make the right move for your invention.

Licensing Your Invention: A Path to Market Without Manufacturing 

Many inventors dream of seeing their products on store shelves, but not everyone wants to invest in manufacturing, manage inventory, or leave their current job. That's where licensing can become an attractive option.

INVENTION HISTORY: On June 2, James Gibbs, patents single-thread sewing machine

On June 2, 1857, inventor James Edward Allen Gibbs received a patent for what became the first practical single-thread chain-stitch sewing machine, a breakthrough that helped make sewing faster, simpler, and more accessible.

Unlike many early sewing machines that relied on more complex mechanisms, Gibbs' design used a single thread and an innovative rotating hook to create a chain stitch. The machine proved to be efficient, reliable, and easier to operate than many competing designs of the time.

Following the patent, Gibbs partnered with businessman James Willcox to form the Willcox & Gibbs Sewing Machine Company, which became one of the most successful sewing machine manufacturers of the 19th century. 💡 June Inventor Insight: Use the Season Around You

Summer is full of product clues.

Think about it.

People are outside more. Families are traveling. Kids are home from school. Yards, pools, beaches, parks, patios, sports, food, storage, cooling, comfort, safety, and convenience all become part of daily life.

That means new problems show up.

And problems are where inventors begin.

This week, try looking at your idea through a June and summer lens:

Ask yourself:

• Would people use this more during the summer?

• Does it solve a seasonal problem?

• Could it help with travel, outdoor living, family routines, storage, comfort, or safety?

• Is there another use for this idea that I have not thought about yet?

• Could this idea fit into more than one market?

Brian Fried often teaches inventors to think beyond the first use of an idea and look for a bigger “window of opportunity.” In How To Make Money with Your Invention Idea, he uses his Pull Ties example to show how one product idea can grow from a bread-bag solution into something useful for cereal bags, freezer bags, chips, pantry items, wires, cords, and more.

That is a simple but powerful lesson.

🧠 Inventor Tip of the Week: Capture It Before It Disappears

Ideas can show up at inconvenient times.

In the car.
In the shower.
At the store.
While cooking.
While fixing something around the house.
While watching someone struggle with a product that should work better.

When that happens, do not trust your memory.

Write it down. Text it to yourself. Record a voice note. Sketch it quickly.

Bloomberg's Marcus Ashworth wrote plainly recently: "No more reliable safe havens."

The Invention Journey Most People Get Wrong

Many aspiring inventors believe success starts with patents, prototypes, or pouring money into product development. That’s where many people go wrong. The smartest invention journeys begin with validation—not spending.

Before investing time and money, ask the right questions:

• Does this solve a real problem?

• Who would buy it?

• Is there already something similar on the market?

• Can it be produced at a cost people will pay for?

Tips When Disclosing Your Idea to Others

Sharing an invention can be exciting, but before presenting your idea to others, it is wise to secure basic intellectual property protection. Many inventors start by filing a Provisional Patent Application (PPA), which allows them to use the term “patent pending” for up to one year while exploring licensing, manufacturing, or market interest.

A provisional patent application acts as a temporary placeholder. It gives you an early filing date but does not include the full legal claims of a utility patent. During that one-year period, inventors can test prototypes, gather feedback, and improve their design before deciding whether to move forward.

It is also important to know exactly what type of protection you have. Some inventors believe they already “have a patent” when they only have a provisional filing. Others may have filed a non-provisional application or a design patent. Understanding your filing status and deadlines is essential.

Before the one-year provisional term ends, inventors must decide whether to file a Non-Provisional Patent Application, also called a utility patent. This application contains claims that define what is legally protected. Missing the deadline may result in losing important rights.

For inventions focused mainly on appearance, a Design Patent may be the better option. Design patents protect ornamental features, while utility patents protect how an invention works.

Many inventors choose to work with a patent attorney or patent agent. Attorneys can handle legal disputes and court matters, while agents are licensed to prepare and file patent applications. Costs can vary, so comparing quotes and checking experience is a smart business move.

While it is possible to file on your own, professional guidance can help avoid costly mistakes. Since intellectual property is often the key asset in licensing or launching a product, protecting your idea properly is one of the smartest first steps you can take.

Advice from an Inventor

INVENTION HISTORY: On May 1, 1888 - Patent #382,280 was granted to Nikola Tesla for the "electrical transmission of power."

In April 1887, Tesla, along with his investors, Western Union telegraph superintendent Alfred S. Brown and attorney Charles F. Peck, founded the Tesla Electric Company in New York City for the purpose of developing new types of electric motors and generators.

Tesla soon developed a new type of electromagnetic induction motor that ran on alternating current. Patented in May 1888, Tesla’s motor proved to be simple, dependable, and not subject to the constant need for repairs that plagued direct current-driven motors at the time.

In July 1888, Tesla sold his patent for AC-powered motors to Westinghouse Electric Corporation, owned by electrical industry pioneer George Westinghouse. In the deal, which proved financially lucrative for Tesla, Westinghouse Electric got the rights to market Tesla’s AC motor and agreed to hire Tesla as a consultant.

With Westinghouse now backing AC and Edison backing DC, the stage was set for what would become known as “The War of the Currents.”

What is copyright registration?

Copyright registration is the official process of recording your creative work with the U.S. Copyright Office to strengthen and formalize your legal rights as the owner.

While copyright protection exists automatically when an original work is created and fixed in a tangible form, owners can take important steps to enhance those protections. The most important of these is registering the work.

Registration is not mandatory—but for U.S. works, registration (or refusal) is required before you can enforce your exclusive rights in court. In other words, if someone infringes on your work, you generally cannot file a lawsuit until your copyright is registered.

Timely registration also provides significant legal advantages. It allows copyright owners to pursue certain types of monetary damages and attorney’s fees in litigation, and it creates a legal presumption that the information on the registration certificate is accurate.

Beyond individual protection, copyright registration benefits the public as well. It supports the licensing marketplace by making ownership information accessible, provides public notice that a work is protected, and contributes to a formal record of the nation’s creative output.

There is only one place to register claims to copyright in the United States: the Copyright Office.

Advice from an Inventor

INVENTION HISTORY: On April 2, 1889, Charles Martin Hall patented an inexpensive method for the production of aluminum, which brought the metal into wide commercial use.

Before 1886, aluminum was so rare and expensive that it was considered a precious metal — costing more than silver and used only for ornamental pieces. That all changed when Charles Martin Hall, a young chemist who had just graduated from Oberlin College, invented an inexpensive method for producing aluminum using electrolysis. His process made it possible to extract aluminum from its ore affordably and on a large scale, launching the modern aluminum industry.

Hall’s breakthrough laid the foundation for aluminum to become one of the most widely used materials in the world — from aircraft components to beverage cans — due to its light weight, strength, and resistance to corrosion.

The Biggest Knock on Private Credit? Percent Changed That.

The number one knock on private credit has always been the same: you can't get out. Lock in for 12 or 24 months, hope things go as planned, wait. Percent changed that in December 2025 with a secondary marketplace. Browse live bid and ask data on seasoned deals, submit an indication of interest to buy or sell, and Percent coordinates the match. For accredited investors who want private credit yields without locking up capital indefinitely, you can do that now. The numbers as of Q4 2025: · $1.82B funded across 981 deals · 16.72% current weighted average coupon · 0.58% lifetime charge-off rate Very few individual investor platforms offer this.
