Construction company Icon has successfully completed a project to build 100 3D-printed homes in a Texas neighborhood.The homes were built using the company's Vulcan 3D printer, which extrudes concrete to create walls layer by layer.

UMEI is a company that creates customizable 3D-printed shoes designed for comfort and recovery. Blender Foundation released a major update for Blender LTS, version 4.2 late last week. This update brings major improvements across the board, including a rewritten rendering engine (EEVEE) with new features, enhancements to Cycles (another rendering engine), and a new add-on management system called "Extensions".

EEVEE now supports global illumination, real displacement, better subsurface scattering, and viewport motion blur.Cycles benefits from better reflections, light transport, and other features for faster and higher quality renders.

The update also improves the Compositor (for post-processing effects), Geometry Nodes (for procedural modeling), and the Video Sequencer (for video editing). Finally, Blender 4.2 integrates a new color mapping system for more accurate renders and includes various improvements to other areas of the software.

The Paris 2024 Olympics debuted the world's first 3D printed skatepark this week. This 400-square-meter park is open to all levels and even includes features for wheelchair users. Designed for accessibility and built with sustainability in mind, the park utilizes eight 3D printed concrete modules that were created with input from skateboarders and a non-profit organization. After the Olympics, the park will be moved to a new location within the Paris region.

BambuLab sent out a marketing email this morning outlining their newest addition to their filament line up, PETG HF. For those of you that had been ordering PETG from BambuLab, you’ll know they recently discontinued it and teased they were bringing in something new.

According to their marketing and product page, this PETG was built for high speed printing. Additionally they state that it needs very little tuning to print flawlessly. The one draw back is that it appears to attract moisture a little more than normal but BambuLab suggest you give it a quick dry before printing to mitigate any issues.

3D Ice Printing in Order to Create Micro-Scale Structures (4 minute read) - Link

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University developed a 3D printing technique called 3D-ICE that uses water droplets to create tiny structures with intricate internal channels. This method is beneficial for tissue engineering because it allows for the creation of complex networks of channels that mimic human blood vessels.

Here's how 3D-ICE works: a 3D printer deposits tiny water droplets onto a freezing platform, one at a time. The water droplets freeze quickly and the process can be controlled to create smooth features and branches. By adjusting the water deposition and temperature, scientists can create structures as small as a human hair.

The researchers are now looking to improve the predictability of this process and explore its applications in medicine. For instance, 3D-ICE could be used to create tissues that mimic a patient's specific blood vessel network, potentially leading to advancements in tissue engineering and medical treatments.

US Navy Utilizing 3D Printers in International Naval Drills (4 minute read) - Link

The US Navy is testing 3D printing technology during the RIMPAC naval exercise in Hawaii. They are using both polymer and metal 3D printers to create parts on-demand, reducing reliance on traditional supply chains. The goal is to quickly produce essential parts directly at the point of need.

The Navy is using an XSPEE3D cold spray metal 3D printer, which can produce large metal parts rapidly, and a laser sintering metal 3D printer. OctoPrint Developer Discovers Stat Manipulation from Obico and OctoEverywhere (3 Minute Read) - Link

OctoPrint developer Gina Häußge recently uncovered stat manipulation that resulted in two plugins appearing closer to the top of the OctoPrint everywhere popular plugin list. After discovering the manipulation, Obico developer Kenneth Jiang admitted to a script he had created a while back to pad his plugin’s stats.

OctoEverywhere was discovered to have been manipulating their stats almost a week earlier. OctoEverywhere said in a blog post that they pinpointed the discrepancy to a single community member. They spoke to the member who said they were unsure they were having an impact and immediately ceased the activity.

As a result, Gina is going to be invoicing both plugin makers for the time she spent unraveling the mess and has removed Obico as a sponsor.

Prusa3D Plans to Become Biggest 3D Printer and Filament Manufacturer in the US in a Year (4 Minute Read) - Link

Prusa Research who partnered with Printed Solid last year, plans to become the largest manufacturer of printers and filaments in the United States. Prusa is known for its focus on quality, and this expansion won't compromise that. They'll be using the same methods and tools in the US facilities as they do in the Czech Republic. This includes assembling Original Prusa MK4 printers, producing Prusament filament with the same high standards, and expanding official Prusa repair services to the US.

Overall, this partnership allows Prusa to better serve the US market while maintaining the quality their customers expect.

John Hopkins Creates an Adaptive Nozzle for Fast and Accurate 3D Printing (8 minute read) - Link

Researchers from Johns Hopkins University have developed a new 3D printing nozzle that can change its shape and size during printing. This adaptive nozzle, called AN3DP, can print high-resolution and fast at the same time, something that current nozzles cannot do.

Current nozzles force users to choose between high-resolution, slow printing or fast, low-resolution printing. AN3DP uses tiny pins and an elastic membrane to change its shape, allowing for both high-resolution and fast printing. This eliminates the "stair-stepping" effect seen on curved surfaces with traditional nozzles.

McDonald's partnered with Philips MyCreation to design and 3D print new, custom light fixtures for their restaurants around the world.

These light fixtures are unique and could not be made with traditional methods. They are 3D printed using sustainable materials and designed to shimmer like velvet.

The 3D printing process allowed McDonald's to achieve their design goals quickly and efficiently, while also meeting their sustainability targets. The project was so successful that McDonald's plans to roll out these light fixtures in stores around the world.

If you’re new around here, we looooovvveee space. We also love history. So when we saw this Saturn V Kit Card, we knew this was going on our list to print. The print has two files, a single color file which you can then paint or a multicolor file for those of you with a fancy color changing printer. As you can see from the picture below, this is a beautiful kit and we can wait to give it a go later today!

ELEGOO unveiled their new flagship 3D printer, the Centauri Carbon, at RAPID + TCT. This beginner-friendly machine boasts a metal build and AI camera capabilities. Alongside this, they introduced the Mars 5 and Mars 5 Ultra resin printers, offering increased printing speeds and improved calibration for users of all experience levels.

PrusaSlicer 2.8.0 is here! This final release includes Prusa Connect integration, a new G-code viewer, and various UI improvements. See the linked release notes for a complete list of changes since the previous version.

There's an important note for Linux users: Due to library dependencies, PrusaSlicer now offers two AppImage downloads.Choose the one compatible with your Linux distribution's version of WebKit (browser library). Downloading the wrong version will cause the software to not work.

Prusa Launches HT90 3D Printers Geared Towards Engineers (8 minute read) - Link

Prusa Research launched the Prusa Pro HT90, a new industrial 3D printer designed for a wide range of materials.

Key features of the HT90 include an actively heated chamber (up to 90°C), high-speed printing with Input Shaper technology, and swappable print heads (up to 500°C). This allows the HT90 to print with a wide range of materials, from PLA to PEI (Ultem), an aerospace-grade filament.

The HT90 is particularly suited for advanced materials like ASA, ABS, and PC due to its advanced cooling system. It can also handle high-end filaments like PEEK, PEKK, PPSU, and PES thanks to its 500°C high-temp print head. Prusa claims the HT90 is the most affordable option for printing with these materials.

The printer is designed to be user-friendly and offers automatic calibration. It also boasts a large 7-inch touchscreen for easy control. Prusa also offers optional accessories like an industrial filament dryer to work with these high-performance materials.

Prusa released a new filament, Prusament PEI 1010 (Ultem), alongside the HT90. This filament is well-suited for demanding applications in aerospace, automotive, and other industries.

Overall, Prusa believes the HT90 is a versatile and affordable solution for industrial 3D printing needs.

Fabreeko Launches Updated LDO Voron Kits Dubbed ‘Rev D’ - Link

Fabreeko is offering an upgrade for their LDO Voron 3D printer kits, called "Rev D". This upgrade brings several improvements including a new Leviathan controller board with better drivers and Raspberry Pi compatibility. It also features a new Nitehawk SB toolhead that simplifies wiring and includes an accelerometer. The extruder gear has been upgraded for better print accuracy, and other parts have been improved for performance and durability. Orders are now available and Fabreeko is quoting a 24 hour turn around time.

Helio’s Dragon Software to Improve 3D Printing By Solving Physics Problems - Link

3D printing experts are aiming to improve 3D printing by understanding the physics behind it. David Hartmann and Dr. Xiaofan Luo co-founded Helio Additive to create Dragon, a software that optimizes the process.

Dragon analyzes G-code, a common 3D printing language, to fine-tune settings. This can significantly reduce wasted prints, leading to faster printing (20-30% increase) and better quality. They achieve this by focusing on large format printing for now, but will expand to desktop 3D printers later.

3devo launches filament based on recycled SLS powder - Link

3devo has developed a way to recycle used nylon powder from SLS 3D printing into new filament. This reduces waste, lowers costs (especially for expensive nylon powder), and is overall better for the environment. The recycled filament is high quality and allows for more frequent prototyping and experimentation in industries like aerospace and medicine.

Simplicity wins again with this design. This is just two little arms that you tape to the bottom of your monitor but it really helps to clean up your desk and make the information on your phone more readily available. I am already planning to print this so that I can keep our baby monitor app up at night while playing video games. It’s a quick, cheap print so definitely worth checking out!

We saw multiple slicers updated over the weekend, with updates from PrusaSlicer, BambuStudio, and OrcaSlicer. We’re not going to go over every single feature and bug fix but we’ve grabbed what we thought was the most interesting from each and listed them out below. • PrusaSlicer 2.8.0-beta1:

  • Added support for Prusa Connnect, allowing you to utilize secure cloud printing for your Prusa 3D printers.

• BambuStudio 1.9.3 Official:

  • Improvement of speed algorithm for overhang walls which greatly improves printing of overhangs.

• OrcaSlicer 2.1.0 Official:

  • Improvement of fuzzy skin algorithm to make it more uniform but also random (see picture below)

Researchers 3D Print “Sticker” That Can Determine Diabetes Risk Factor From Sweat - Link

Researchers developed a 3D-printed, sticker-like sweat monitor that can detect diabetes, heart disease, and kidney problems. This non-invasive patch measures glucose, lactate, and uric acid levels in sweat, offering a painless alternative to blood tests. The monitor changes color based on the biomarker levels, providing real-time analysis. Early detection is crucial for effective treatment, and this technology has the potential to revolutionize healthcare. Existing options like EKGs and biopsies are often more invasive. With further testing, this sweat monitor could become a valuable tool for disease management.

Aibuild Updates Their AM Software to 2.0 - Link

Aibuild released version 2.0 of their 3D printing software focused on large-scale applications. This update streamlines the entire printing process with features like one-click toolpath generation and automation. An AI assistant helps users by recommending actions and reducing the need for expert knowledge. Carbon & Fizik Release Custom “One to One” 3D Printed Bike Saddles - Link

3D-printed bike saddles with lattice designs are gaining popularity due to their comfort, weight, and airflow. Fizik and Carbon are taking this a step further with custom-made saddles under the "One-to-One" label.

Riders will use a pressure sensor mat to capture their unique riding style and body movement on their own bike. Additional data is collected from handlebars and a questionnaire. This information is used to design a custom saddle with targeted cushioning and lattice structure. Riders can test the initial design and refine the padding before the final 3D-printed saddle is created.

College Lab Builds 3D Printed Arms to Help 12 Year Old Amputee Play Drums - Link

12-year-old Aubrey Sauvie, a triple congenital amputee, never let her disability hold her back. Despite missing both arms below the elbows, she pursued her passions like martial arts, art, and even drumming. However, drumming with the sticks tucked in her elbows wasn't ideal.

Aubrey's band teacher saw her potential and recommended her to a Tennessee Tech University program. There, a group of engineering students took on the challenge of creating custom prosthetics for Aubrey.

The semester-long project involved taking measurements, testing prototypes, and ultimately creating 3D-printed, durable, and flexible prosthetics with interchangeable grips. This "one in a million shot" allowed Aubrey to finally achieve the proper snare sound she craved, and her drumming dreams are expanding to include a full drum kit.

One Color Custom QR Code for Sharing WiFi, Check-ins, Menu, etc - wyqid on Thingiverse.com - Link

These are great to have at your house to share out your WiFi password, or if you run a restaurant you could easily point these to your menu! Anything you can fit on a QR code, you can use these for. The instructions on page walk you through how you can generate the code and then put it on the model for printing. The great part about these is that they are one color if you’d like. You just need to carefully dab the top layer with a contrasting color to make the QR code pop. Of course, if you have a multi-filament machine you can always switch to a contrasting color for the final few layers and achieve a similar result.

PrusaSlicer V2.8.0-alpha5 Was Released Over the Weekend (6 minute read) - Link

PrusaSlicer V2.8.0-alpha5 was released over the weekend with a ton of new features and bug fixes. One of the largest features was the ability to access Prusa Connect via the slicer itself. Prusa Connect is the web based solution to access your printers and see their status via your web browser, and now you can access all that info straight from the slicer.

Additionally, PrusaSlicer has undergone significant UI updates, G-Code viewer updates, seam improvements and more. Be sure to check out the link to read the release notes and check out all the new features and bug fixes.

PrusaConnect is now available within PrusaSlicer.

Scientist Create Method for 3D Printing Strong but Flexible Aluminum (30 minute read, research paper) - Link

Scientists have developed a new method for 3D printing aluminum alloy that is both very strong and flexible.Traditionally, strong aluminum alloys were difficult to 3D print because they cracked during the process. This new method uses tiny particles within the alloy to prevent cracking and creates an aluminum alloy that is much stronger than previous 3D printed versions, while also being surprisingly bendable.

Azul3D Launches Large Format OCEAN Printer, Based on HARP Tech - Link

Azul 3D launched a new large resin 3D printer, OCEAN. Compared to their previous model, OCEAN boasts a much bigger build area (812 x 812 mm) for larger objects. It also maintains high printing speeds (over 300 mm/hour) and detailed prints (72 microns) thanks to its innovative HARP technology. With a wide range of resins and potential for functional coatings, OCEAN positions Azul 3D for large-scale 3D printing across various industries.

Airless Basketball - PartyLime on MakerWorld.com - Link

If you didn’t get in on the trend a while back, here is your shot. This is PartyLime’s 12th Version of the airless basketball and it seems they’ve nailed it. The comments have people who have printed it in TPC and PEBA and it seems that while expensive, the PEBA can achieve nearly the same bounce as a normal basketball. Now it’s probably not quite as economical (PEBA is around $60-$100 per KG), it is a fun print to try out!
