This week's theme is "Innovative learning techniques." We're diving deep into the various methods that individuals with ADHD can use to thrive in their studies! Of course, these come with a tech twist, differing from what you may be accustomed to.

If you've been following along for the past few weeks, you'll know I strive to bring value to all readers. This week, I've got something special for those interested in AI. A unique weekly prompt that's sure to help level up your knowledge, regardless of your focus!

Here, the educational focus is directed squarely toward people with their own businesses. If you're a solopreneur, freelancer, or running a side hustle (or three), this one's for you. And even if you're not, stick around.

Featured Article

The Feynman Technique: Your Learning, Turbocharged!

Have you ever tried to explain something complex and found yourself tangled up in your own words? This is where the Feynman Technique shines. This four-step method was developed by Richard Feynman, a Nobel laureate known for his ability to simplify and clarify complex principles. This method isn’t just a learning technique—it’s a way to deepen your understanding of the material and ensure that knowledge sticks.

Here’s a breakdown of the four steps:

Select a Concept to Learn: Familiar with cooking terms? Think of this as your mise-en-place (getting all your ingredients prepared before you start to cook). Choose a topic that intrigues you, something you’ve always wanted to master. Maybe it’s a programming language like Python, or perhaps it’s something as mundane as baking the perfect batch of cookies. Start by jotting down everything you know about it, similar to how you might read through the whole recipe before starting to cook.

Teach it to a Child: Now, imagine explaining this concept to a curious seven-year-old. How would you do it? You’d use simple language and analogies they understand, right? This step is about breaking down your sophisticated knowledge into bite-sized, digestible pieces. If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough yet — Feynman’s words, not mine!

Review and Refine Your Understanding: This is where you become both teacher and student. Where did you stumble? What couldn’t you explain clearly? Those are your knowledge gaps. Go back, study these areas, and refine your explanation. It’s an iterative process, like perfecting a recipe through multiple rounds of tasting and tweaking until the balance is just right.

Organize Your Notes and Revisit Them Regularly: Finally, arrange your insights neatly. These notes are your personal cheat sheet. By revisiting them, you reinforce what you’ve learned and keep the details fresh, ready for whenever you need them.

Why It Works

The beauty of the Feynman Technique lies in its simplicity and the powerful principle it leverages: If you want to understand something well, teach it. The act of teaching forces you to structure your knowledge, explain it clearly, and adjust based on feedback, whether from an actual audience or a hypothetical one. This method doesn’t just fill gaps in your knowledge; it also enhances your ability to communicate, to think critically, and to approach problems creatively.

By adopting the Feynman Technique, you’re not just learning—you’re learning how to learn. Whether you’re a student grappling with new concepts, a professional aiming to master a new skill, or just someone curious about the world, this technique offers a roadmap to clearer understanding and better retention.

Embracing Neurodiversity

Spaced Repetition: A Powerful Tool for Enhanced Learning and Memory Retention

Spaced repetition is a learning strategy that optimizes memory performance by scheduling reviews of educational material at systematically increasing intervals. This approach ensures that information is revisited just as the learner is on the verge of forgetting it, reinforcing memory and enabling deeper learning.

Understanding Spaced Repetition

Key Principles

Increasing Intervals: Reviews begin frequently–hours or days apart–and extend to weeks or months as mastery increases, thus optimizing memory retention over time.

Active Recall: This method utilizes active recall, requiring learners to generate answers from memory, which strengthens neural connections more effectively than passive review.

Adaptive Review: Review intervals are dynamically adjusted based on individual performance, ensuring that difficult material receives more attention until it is fully mastered.

Implementation Tools

Digital Flashcards: Platforms like Anki and Memorang automate the review process, adapting intervals based on user performance.

Software Applications: Various tools implement algorithms to customize the spacing of reviews, helping learners remember information more effectively.

Graduated Intervals: The Leitner system uses categorized flashcards that move to longer intervals as they are mastered, providing a structured approach to memory reinforcement.

Benefits for Everyone

Spaced repetition is scientifically validated to move knowledge from short-term to long-term memory, increasing retention and reducing the need for relearning. This makes it an efficient method for students and professionals alike, adaptable across various learning contents and complexity levels.

Special Advantages for ADHD Learners

People with ADHD often face challenges with working memory and attention span. Spaced repetition offers unique benefits for ADHD learners:

Structured Learning: It breaks learning into manageable sessions, preventing information overload and helping maintain focus.

Customizable Intervals: The intervals between reviews can be adjusted to match the learner’s pace, accommodating their unique learning curve.

Accessible Tools: Applications like Anki, Quizlet, and Mochi are frequently recommended for individuals with ADHD, providing practical ways to integrate spaced repetition into daily routines.

Readwise: A Game Changer for Entrepreneurs

How Readwise Masters Spaced Repetition

Readwise offers a user-friendly alternative to complex spaced repetition software through its Mastery algorithm, which uses a decaying recall probability model. Highlights are revisited based on their likelihood of being forgotten, ensuring that information remains fresh:

Initial Recall Half-Lives: Set at different durations (Soon: 7 days, Later: 14 days, Someday: 28 days) based on user interaction.

Dynamic Resurfacing: Highlights with a recall probability below 50% are prioritized in Daily Reviews, helping users focus on weaker areas.

Benefits for Entrepreneurs

For entrepreneurs, constant learning and information retention are crucial. Readwise makes it easier to retain key insights from extensive reading materials:

Efficient Review: Ensures important highlights from books and articles are revisited just before they are likely to be forgotten, maximizing retention without overwhelming the user.

Integration with Daily Routine: Fits seamlessly into daily workflows, making it simple for busy professionals to keep up with their reading and learning objectives.

Another advantage of Readwise is their more recent app, Reader which is included in a Readwise subscription. It has become my favorite read-later app and, in fact, just my favorite reading app, period. I frequently send documents, webpages, and ebooks to it just to use the “read now” feature. Pair that with its built-in highlighting that syncs directly with Readwise so you can benefit from their Mastery feature, and you’ve got a really powerful learning tool that fits in your phone.

In conclusion, spaced repetition, particularly when combined with tools like Readwise and Reader, provides a robust framework for improving memory retention. For individuals with ADHD, it offers a structured approach to managing learning effectively, while entrepreneurs benefit from maintaining a competitive edge through continuous and efficient learning. This strategy empowers all users to not only remember more but to truly master the information they learn.

You can try out Readwise and Reader for an entire month for free, but if you use my link, you’ll get an additional free month! There’s no reason not to try it out for yourself today and boost your information retention in the process.

AI Corner: The Weekly Prompt

A Custom-tailored, Self-guided, Skill-boosting Course

This is a special sneak peek at one of the several large prompt workflows I’ve been refining for my upcoming premium membership tier. I haven’t yet decided if it will be through email or my website, but it’s coming soon, and I’d love your feedback!

Today, I’m bringing you a complete walkthrough of a multi-prompt workflow that guides you in creating a customized learning path that you can follow to increase your high-value skills and gain a powerful competitive advantage on your own terms.

This is a departure from the usual format in that I am including the full transcript from the ChatGPT session so you can see exactly how to use this set of prompts to upskill and start living your best life.

So, without further ado:

User:

<role>

Thanks for joining me for the third Issue of The Newsletter! Can you believe it’s already been 3 weeks since I started this? I certainly can’t. What I can tell you, though, is that it’s become a highlight of my week. Having the chance to gather up some of my favorite insights bridging the worlds of tech and neurodiversity is a great way for me to deepen my own understanding of these topics. After all, I need to make sure I’ve got all my facts straight, so that means research, review, and lots of writing!

I hope you’re finding the newsletter engaging so far. This week, I've made a few small changes as I continue to shape this newsletter. Your feedback and engagement have been invaluable in this process, and I'm starting to see patterns that I enjoy or would rather avoid, thanks to your input.

My intention is to create a newsletter that’s not only enjoyable to read but also a valuable educational resource for you. I have to find this process fulfilling as well, as that's the key to its longevity. Rest assured, I'm dedicated to maintaining the quality and relevance of the content, and continue to look forward to your feedback!

Are you ready to set out on another adventure with me?

Let’s go!

Tech News Updates

Discontinued!

This is only the third week of The Newsletter, and I’ve already made the tough decision to discontinue this segment, at least as a regular weekly recurring staple.

I believe that leaving the news reporting to the experts who specialize in that area will ultimately benefit you more. Therefore, I have chosen to put this segment on hold for the time being, but you may see it again if there’s anything extra special to highlight.

Featured Article

Embracing Neurodiversity

Understanding Decision Fatigue in ADHD

ADHD affects millions worldwide and presents unique challenges, such as decision fatigue. This form of exhaustion stems from the relentless need to make choices and can be particularly overwhelming for individuals with ADHD.

I’ll walk you through some practical strategies to combat decision fatigue, enabling you to make choices with ease and preserve your mental energy for what truly matters.

You with me? Read on!

Simplify Your Choices

Prioritize Your Decisions: Begin each day by identifying the most crucial decisions you need to make. I start my mornings by jotting down the top three decisions for the day in my planner. This approach not only clears my mind but also ensures that I address the most impactful choices first, reducing the clutter of less critical decisions that can wait.

Break It Down: When faced with a complex decision, I mentally break it into smaller, more manageable components. Even more complex? I might spend some time mind-mapping or sketching. I can explore ideas more deeply with visuals present. These methods significantly reduce any overwhelm and help enhance my focus.

Harness Automation

Templates and Checklists: I use templates and checklists extensively to standardize responses and streamline actions. For instance, my email templates save me from reinventing responses to common inquiries.

Automation Tools: I rely on Make Scenarios and Apple Shortcuts to automate routine tasks like scheduling file management tasks and processing data. This saves a tremendous amount of mental energy, which I can then allocate to more significant decisions.

Delegate to Elevate

Empower Others: Delegating decisions can be a game-changer, especially when you don't even have to delegate to a human! I often assign the task of choosing blog post topics to my content management tool, which uses trending data to select topics that effectively engage my audience.

Set Boundaries: It's crucial to define what decisions you're comfortable delegating. I set clear boundaries by only delegating non-critical decisions, like choosing the color scheme for a new banner, which ensures I maintain overall control while reducing stress.

Embrace Breaks

Micro-breaks: I take short, five-minute breaks every half hour to stretch and refocus. These breaks are essential for resetting my decision-making capabilities. It's also a good idea to give your eyes a rest.

Mindful Moments

Daily Practices: Engaging in daily mindfulness practices such as meditation and simple breathing exercises helps me clear my mind. Each morning, I try to spend 10 minutes meditating, which sharpens my focus for the day ahead. It doesn't have to be 10 minutes though. Even two will do if that's all I can get.

Reflection: Regular journaling has been instrumental in helping me understand my decision-making patterns and triggers. This reflection leads to more mindful and effective choices. Stay tuned for an upcoming blog post exploring my journaling practice, and how you can benefit from starting one, no matter what you do!

Strategic Planning

Scheduled Decision Time: I do my best to keep some open time in my calendar for making decisions, usually when I'm most alert and focused, which is typically in the mid-morning.

Advance Preparation: I gather all necessary information in advance to facilitate informed and relaxed decision-making. This preparation might involve compiling data the night before a big meeting or outlining the potential outcomes of a decision.

Prioritize Your Well-Being

Consistent Sleep Patterns: I aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. I know I have more executive function energy when I get more deep sleep. Of course, this is easier said than done. Between running a business as a solopreneur and the unpredictable nature of being a parent, I can't say I have the best track record. Still, I do my best, and I try not to beat myself up if I miss the mark.

Regular Physical Activity: Regular exercise boosts both mood and focus. I incorporate a brisk walk into my morning routine when possible. I find it enhances my decision-making abilities throughout the day.

Overcoming Decision Fatigue with ADHD

While decision fatigue is a common struggle for those of us with ADHD, adopting these strategies can significantly alleviate your cognitive burden. By simplifying tasks, leveraging automation, and caring for your mental and physical health, you can enhance your decision-making skills and lead a more productive and less stressful life.

Remember though, everything I mentioned takes time and discipline. I didn't add all of these things into my routines at once, and I'm not amazing at all of them. I just try my best every day.

My Advice: Start small, and remember to forgive yourself whenever you forget, or really aren't feeling up to it. It's really easy to lose motivation if you're too hard on yourself.

AI Corner: The Weekly Prompt

Time-Blocking

Recap: Macro-Group To-Do Sorting

Last week, I introduced you to a simple yet impactful AI prompt designed to tackle overwhelming to-do lists. Facing a mountain of tasks can be daunting, especially when ADHD paralysis kicks in. But, I showed you a technique that can revolutionize the way you approach your workload.

If you haven’t read that one yet, it’s helpful context to have before today’s prompt, so take a moment to check it out first!

Today, I’m covering a prompt that can help you time-block your day! If time-blocking is a new phrase for you, you may find it interesting to learn that the technique dates back almost as far as calendars themselves, with evidence pointing to use as early as the Bronze Age.

Time blocking is a time management technique that involves dividing your day into specific blocks of time, each dedicated to a particular task or activity. This method helps boost productivity by providing a more deliberate and regimented structure for the workday, allowing individuals to focus on their most important tasks and avoid distractions.

Time blocking can be used in various ways, such as traditional time blocking, the Pomodoro technique, time theming, energy-management time blocking, and batching. Its benefits include improved focus, reduced stress, and increased productivity. This technique can be helpful for anyone requiring more structure and deliberate focus in their workdays.

The prompt this week is structured in such a way that you can simply paste it into your chat once you’re given the aforementioned to-do macro-groups.

Prompt:

As an efficiency planning expert, please help me time block my day with the above macro to-do groups.

I will begin work at {{start_time}} and end at {{end_time}} with a break from {{break_start}} to {{break_end}}.

For additional clarification, my variables were as follows:

start_time = 8am

end_time = 4pm

break_start = 11am

break_end = 1pm

Here's what the output looked like in my case. A couple of technical issues prevented me from delivering the presentation I had planned, but I still got some great feedback, which was really encouraging. I will certainly be planning more events like that moving forward. I think they're beneficial for both myself and my audience.

For me: Hosting free educational events helps get new people in the door. It's also a great way for me to practice my delivery without the stress of feeling like I have to get it perfect because someone has paid for it. Plus, getting to try out new talking points with folks who aren't paying means less stress if the topics don't land or I still need to refine the presentation in other ways.

For attendees: It's a good way for people to test the waters and see if they're even interested in the topics I cover. It also lets people see what classes with me are like without any financial pressure. Plus, they get a ton of useful tips they can apply right away.

A couple of other key points from the past week:

Thanks to @systemsjake, I had a great introduction to Figma. Each issue will focus on an overarching theme to keep content cohesive and diverse. This week's theme is Embracing Neurodiversity in Entrepreneurship.

With the momentum we've picked up over the past week, it's time to dive in!

Featured Article

Hyperfocus: The Entrepreneurial Superpower

Hyperfocus is a term often used in the context of ADHD, but it's a phenomenon that many neurodivergent individuals experience. In the entrepreneurial world, it's like having a secret weapon, one that can propel you to incredible heights of productivity and creativity.

Understanding Hyperfocus

What Is Hyperfocus? Hyperfocus can be described as an intense form of mental concentration or absorption in which one becomes fully engrossed in a task to the point where they may become oblivious to the world around them. This state allows for deep work, where distractions fade away, and productivity soars.

Neurodivergent Minds and Hyperfocus: For those of us with ADHD or other forms of neurodiversity, hyperfocus often occurs spontaneously, triggered by high interest or urgency in a task. It’s a unique cognitive feature where our brains lock onto something with an intensity that can be both astonishing and overwhelming.

The Power of Hyperfocus in Entrepreneurship

Enhanced Productivity: In my own experience, hyperfocus has enabled me to accomplish massive amounts of work in a short period. I recall times when developing new course material or working on a complex project, where hours passed without my notice, resulting in significant progress.

Deep Dives into Innovation: Hyperfocus allows for an unparalleled depth of thought, facilitating innovative solutions and creative ideas. It’s during these times of hyperfocus that some of my best ideas have emerged, ideas that might have remained unexplored under normal concentration levels.

Managing Hyperfocus for Maximum Benefit

Strategic Application: The key to harnessing hyperfocus is directing it towards productive tasks. I’ve learned to recognize the signs of an impending hyperfocus session and to align it with critical tasks or complex problems that require deep thinking. That said, it's difficult for me to control when I might enter that state, and actively trying to achieve it almost always results in the opposite.

Balancing with Breaks: As Eldon Tyrell said in Blade Runner, "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long..." Of course, he was talking about the lifespan of an android, but, I digress. It’s crucial to manage hyperfocus so it doesn’t lead to burnout. Integrating structured breaks, using techniques like the Pomodoro method, has been instrumental for me in maintaining balance. I prefer a longer pomo session, typically aiming at a 50-minute session followed by a 10-minute rest period. I find the classic 25-minute sessions never really allow me to get the momentum needed to engage deeply in a task.

Avoiding Hyperfocus Pitfalls: One challenge is becoming so absorbed in a task that other important duties get neglected. To counter this, I use tools like task lists and will set an alarm to act as a "hard stop", just in case I decide to "skip just one more break", one too many times.

Hyperfocus in Collaboration

Communicating with Your Team: It's important to communicate your hyperfocus tendencies in a team setting. I've found it beneficial to explain to my colleagues how I work during these periods and to establish boundaries and expectations.

Leveraging Collective Hyperfocus: Imagine a team where each member understands and respects each other’s hyperfocus abilities. By aligning these periods with collaborative deep work sessions, the productivity and creative output can be remarkable.

Hyperfocus in entrepreneurship can be likened to a laser beam — powerful, precise, and capable of cutting through complexity. By understanding and managing this trait, we can transform our natural cognitive tendencies into a formidable tool for business success. It's about channeling our intense concentration to not only advance our entrepreneurial endeavors, but also innovate and redefine what's possible in the business world.

This Week in Tech

AI and Computing Power: Microsoft and OpenAI's Ambitious 'Stargate' Project

Microsoft and OpenAI Collaborate on 'Stargate'

Microsoft's potential investment of $100 billion in an AI supercomputer for OpenAI's 'Stargate' project marks a significant development in AI technology.

The scale of this project has sparked discussions about the potential for artificial general intelligence (AGI) and its far-reaching implications.

Source

Healthcare Innovation: AI Transforming Drug Development

AI Accelerates Drug Discovery

The use of AI in drug development is growing rapidly, with its potential to halve time and costs, leading to faster introduction of new treatments.

AI's ability to analyze large datasets is crucial for identifying new drugs or applications, revolutionizing the pharmaceutical industry.

Implications for Healthcare

This advancement suggests a significant shift in drug development processes, promising quicker access to new medical treatments.

Source

I found this fascinating article about using machine learning to diagnose ADHD. As many with ADHD can attest, getting started is often monumentally difficult, but once we get moving, that momentum can be a very powerful force. So, once again, thank you for showing up and adding to that momentum.

This inaugural issue marks a significant milestone.

It’s the culmination of over a year’s worth of contemplation, a period characterized by the all-too-familiar dance with procrastination that many of us with ADHD know. This delay, while frustrating, also reflects the internal battles we face—between confidence in our expertise and the shadows of impostor syndrome that loom large.

However, the past couple of months have been transformative. I’ve tapped into newly discovered resilience, pushing past anxiety and self-doubt to bring this newsletter to life.

It’s all the more rewarding knowing you’re reading along now!

Each issue of this newsletter is crafted with intention, aiming to provide you with a mix of content that is both relevant and engaging. In this issue, you’ll find a summary of what I hope to deliver within each section as a precursor to the content in that space. To ensure you can easily navigate to the sections that interest you most, I’m adopting a consistent format.

Think of this as your modern-day newspaper, where you always know exactly where to find your favorite pieces, be it the latest in tech, or insights into neurodiversity. This consistency is one of the measures I intend to adhere to in order to reduce the cognitive load for my fellow *ADHDers.

*Please see this page on inclusive language for my thoughts on the use of particular terms in the realm of ADHD and neurodiversity.

Featured Article

Each week, I’ll share a condensed article on a topic that’s recently piqued my interest. One for handling newsletter creation!

I also signed up to Beehiiv. It’s not my first time setting up something like this, but it is the first time I’ve done it for myself. There are lots of moving parts with any system like this. You need to figure out all your design templates, the technical issues of where your mail is sent from (DNS configuration stuff), and any landing pages you might need to direct people to.

I had the opportunity to speak with a couple of interesting folks in the neurodivergent community about automation and with some folks in automation circles about neurodivergence.
