Q: Welcome to Signal21, James! Can you tell us about your background, what you’ve been up to at McKayResearch, and your journey into Bitcoin?

James: Thanks, Jonathan! My background is in multi-market intelligence and I previously worked with the largest privately held intel firms delivering research solutions and trend analyses across different markets. For the past eight years, I’ve been focusing exclusively on macro and digital assets through my own consulting practice, McKayResearch, producing enterprise-grade research products for asset managers, crypto firms, and legal consultancies. Through this work, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for Bitcoin’s potential as a transformative asset class, particularly as someone who understands the strengths and weaknesses of gold. My focus on Bitcoin stems from its unique role as both a financial tool and a foundational layer for emerging technologies.

Q: How do you see the future of Bitcoin Layer 2s and the potential for projects like Signal21?

James: There are a few key perspectives that jump out to me when looking at L2s. First, why is it happening? Well, the scalability and usability of Bitcoins’ base layer are limited, and L2s like Stacks, Lightning, and Rootstock are paving the way for the development of innovative economic activity on the network. But ultimately, it is the unrivaled security and trust of the network that makes Bitcoin finality so coveted–even while there are so many other blockchains that on the surface appear to be better-suited for the development of smart contracts and other applications. As Bitcoin’s economic activity expands, Signal21 will play an increasingly pivotal role in telling this story to the world through the data it provides.

Q: What excites you most about joining Signal21 as Institutional Research Lead?

James: Timing is everything, and I believe Signal21’s focus on providing actionable insights to institutions and builders is exactly what the market needs. I’m also excited about coming on board at such a bullish phase of the current cycle, one in which we’re witnessing the real-time acceptance of Bitcoin as a key asset class of the present and future among individuals, companies, and countries. Last but not least, the conviction and technical expertise of those driving this project forward is a big one for me, and I’ve already built a strong rapport with members of the team through discussions around Bitcoin and collaborations on other projects.

Q: How do you plan to contribute to Signal21’s mission?

James: My top priority in working with Signal21 is to develop their research products and align them with the needs of financial institutions to expand sales into that segment. This means not just producing high-quality research and helping Signal21 position itself as the go-to source for Bitcoin data and insights, it also means enhancing institutional investors' understanding of the significance of Bitcoin L2s by looking beyond ‘digital gold’ narratives. Together, we’ll build solutions that not only serve the current market but also anticipate its future needs.

Q: Finally, can you share anything in particular that you will be working on with Signal21?

Actually yes, I’m particularly excited about an upcoming research report we’ll be launching in 2025 that will provide an innovative approach to charting the complete 360° of economic activity on the Bitcoin network. It will also cover trends in Bitcoin L1s, the growth of L2 solutions, and the increasing productivity of the Bitcoin network as an economic platform as it stakes its claim to become the multi-dimensional asset of the future. This Bitcoin Economy research series will be an important part of Signal21’s efforts to inform strategic decisions for institutions, enterprises, hedge funds, VCs, and other financial players.

We caught up with Domo to discuss his journey in the Bitcoin space, his thoughts on the BRC20 token standard, and why he’s excited to join the Signal21 team.

Q: Welcome to Signal21, Domo! Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to create the BRC20 token standard?

Domo: My background is in onchain analytics, primarily in the EVM/SOL ecosystem, where I led the onchain analytics team at a top payments company. I was mainly an NFT trader during the last cycle, and ordinals immediately caught my attention as a strong narrative that brought me back to Bitcoin. At the time, no one was creating dashboards for this emerging space, so I took the opportunity to teach myself UTXO data and grow my brand on Twitter. BRC-20 was intended as just another dashboard, illustrating how to emulate fungibility on Bitcoin. But it quickly turned into much more, leading to the craziest 18 months of my life!

Q: How do you see the future of Bitcoin Layer 2s and the potential for projects like Signal21?

Domo: I think the potential for Bitcoin Layers is massive. Metaprotocols have clearly shown huge demand for asset issuance on Layer 1, but the user experience isn't yet on par with ecosystems like Ethereum and Solana. Layer 2s can add functionality and improve user experience for these assets, while also unlocking Bitcoin’s dormant liquidity. Currently, these are all 'sidechains,' but as we reduce trust assumptions, I believe these layers will become increasingly important to the Bitcoin ecosystem. With that, the need for better tools to analyze them will grow, and that’s where Signal21 stands out—by offering detailed, multi-layered Bitcoin data to help users stay ahead.

Q: You also run the Layer 1 Foundation. Can you tell us more about its mission and how it aligns with your role at Signal21?

Domo: The Layer 1 Foundation was born out of the need for better discourse and development tooling for the metaprotocol community on Bitcoin, similar to what Ethereum Magicians offers. We felt it was essential to create a hub where people could access the latest documentation and resources for standards like BRC-20, democratizing access to tooling. This aligns closely with Signal21's mission of facilitating access to Bitcoin-adjacent data, which is why I was excited to join. In the future, I hope we can explore extending the relationship by hosting Signal21 data on L1F.

Q: What excites you most about joining Signal21 as a data advisor?

Domo: What excites me most is that Signal21 provides exactly the kind of solution I was looking for to continue my onchain analysis in the space. As someone who led an onchain analytics team and built dashboards for emerging spaces like BRC-20, joining Signal21 and shaping its direction was an awesome opportunity. I believe there are a lot of interesting developments on Bitcoin's L1 and L2 that aren't getting the visibility they would on other ecosystems, largely due to a lack of accessible data. I hope Signal21, along with my analysis, can help change that. Bitcoin is becoming more than just a financial tool, and Signal21 is at the forefront of that transformation, offering the critical data insights that will drive the next wave of innovation.

Q: How do you plan to contribute to Signal21’s mission?

Domo: My goal is to provide a clear understanding of how Bitcoin’s evolving layers can be leveraged by developers and investors. I’ll be advising on structuring the data to enhance accessibility and usability, ensuring that Signal21 becomes the go-to source for actionable insights across Bitcoin’s Layer 1 and Layer 2 ecosystems. With my background in building analytics tools and supporting the metaprotocol community, I hope that I can bring a unique perspective on the types of data that builders need to innovate and move faster

Q: Finally, what message do you have for the Signal21 community?

Domo: I’m excited to join Signal21 and contribute to the work already underway. Big ideas often come from exploring onchain data—BRC-20, for example, emerged from me learning UTXO data and experimenting with Ordinals and Sats Names protocols. The next major innovation in the Bitcoin ecosystem could come from what you uncover using Signal21.

Synthetic BTC supply on Stacks reached an all-time-high this week with xBTC reaching 169.8 and aBTC growing to 149.9, respectively.

It’s been an exciting week in the Bitcoin Economy!

On Monday, the price of Bitcoin hit an all-time high of $69,210 before quickly dropping 8% later that day to $61,973 — then Friday touched another all-time high of $69,255 before closing out the week at $68,751 at the time of writing. At the same time, Bitcoin ETF inflows showed no sign of slowing down, as the ten Bitcoin ETFs collectively crossed $10 billion in volume on March 5th alone.

The Stacks ecosystem reached a number of milestones, including crossing 1M unique wallets. While core Stacks projects StackingDAO crossed 25M in stSTX extant supply, and Arkadiko’s USDA crossed an extant supply of 5M.

The Bitcoin scaling narrative is in full swing as we watch Stacks hit a huge milestone, surpassing 1,000,000 Unique Wallets (visit the Stacks dashboard).

StackingDAO

Newly minted stSTX tokens were relatively flat (0.07%) week-over-week. StackingDAO extant supply of stSTX reached 25,000,000, worth approximately $72.6 million at time of writing (visit the StackingDAO dashboard).

Arkadiko

The circulating supply of USDA grew nearly 4% week-over-week, reaching new two-year highs of 5,054,041 and breaking the 5M milestone (visit the Arkadiko dashboard).

Welsh

WELSH had a massive week, reaching an all-time high of $0.01459 before softening to end the week at $.01142. Welsh also surpassed 8,000 token holders by adding 1,054 holders over the last week alone — a week-over-week growth of 15%, which also accounts for 13% of all Welsh token holders (visit the Welsh dashboard).
