Southeast Asia seems to be taking a cue from Europe's travel playbook with talks of a Schengen-style visa system. Thailand, the mastermind behind the plan, is rallying its neighboring countries like Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Laos for a smoother entry experience.

Word on the street is that Thailand's Prime Minister is pushing this plan harder than a street food vendor hustling Pad Thai.
Apparently, they've got their sights set on hitting the tourism jackpot—80 million visitors a year by 2027.

Thailand is navigating significant economic challenges marked by a sluggish manufacturing sector and declining exports.

• Its reliance on tourism has become vital, constituting approximately 12% of the economy and supporting around 20% of the country's workforce.

The proposed Schengen-style visa scheme isn't just a casual idea—it's a strategic move to turbocharge the region's economies. Imagine it as a visa-driven revival, where everyone gets a taste of the tourism action, boosting growth and opportunities across the board.

What other changes has Thailand made to international visa agreements?

1. This week, Thailand dropped a visa bombshell: they're plotting to ditch visa hassles with Australia. No set date yet, but it's like they're swiping right on easier entry for Aussies, aiming to spice up trade and turn up the tourism heat.

2. In March, China and Thailand got cozy with a visa-free fling—30 days of no strings attached. Travel bookings soared like fireworks!

3. And remember last November? India got the VIP treatment too, skipping the visa line straight to Thailand's tropical paradise.

Most Importantly - It's all paying off big time for Thailand—first quarter of 2024 and they've rolled out the welcome mat for over nine million jet-setters. Who needs visas when you've got sun, sea, and smiles?

😎 Solar Eclipse | April 8, 2024 (Texas, Arkansas, New York etc.)

In 2017, 88 % of American adults watched the event either in person or online. If you miss this total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, the next one will be on Aug. 23, 2044. Make sure you’re alive.
This year, it will be visible in such places as Austin, Texas; Little Rock, Arkansas; Buffalo, New York; & Cleveland.
From Mexico, the eclipse's path will enter the United States in Texas and go as far north as Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine before exiting the continent in Canada.
Almost 500 U.S. cities will be in the path of the eclipse's full totality, and many Americans have planned trips to places where they can experience it.
Americans are eager to fly to see the solar eclipse, bookings for car rentals, hotels & flights rose by 212%, 315%, 110% as per Navan.

These Countries Offer The Best Passports For Digital Nomads

So what’s special - Unlike the Henley Passport Index which ranks the world’s most powerful passports & uses International Air Transport Association data, the Nomad Passport Index (NPI) takes a different approach.

They look at 199 global passports and how they fare in terms of visa-free travel, global perception and taxation of citizens. The ranking also focuses on dual citizenship and personal freedom.

Top 10

It’s good news for much of Europe, with 8 of the continent’s nations claiming spots in the top 10.

1. Switzerland came in first, with Ireland & Portugal following close behind in second and third places respectively.

2. Luxembourg & Finland came next, followed by the United Arab Emirates.

3. Then the Netherlands, Norway and Germany with New Zealand rounding out the list.

Outside of the top 10, the NPI says Bulgaria is one to watch for future rankings.

European countries, starting with Iceland, Italy & Greece, also make up numbers 11 to 26 on the list, with only Singapore pipping others to the 27th position.

Bottom Up

At the other end of the spectrum, the bottom-ranking nations out of the 199 citizenships were much the same as those on Henley’s passport index.

Afghanistan came in last, followed by nearby Iraq, Yemen & Eritrea.

Travel Strikes For Jan-Feb, Across 5 European Countries

All travellers going to UK, Italy, Germany, Finland during Jan & Feb. The countries are throwing a strike party for trains, airports, & other public transport. Pack Your Patience & Check below for exact dates & timings, to avoid the hassel.

UK: Train drivers call rolling strike

• Members of the Aslef union have called a rolling schedule of one-day strikes and an overtime ban between 30 January and 5 February.

Italy: Nationwide public transport strike in Italy

• A 24-hour public transport strike will hit Italy nationwide on 24 January. It could cause significant disruption for commuters using buses, trams and subways but is not expected to impact regional and long distance trains.

On the same day, air traffic controllers are set to walk out from 1-5pm, potentially causing delays and cancellations for travellers flying to and from Italy.

Meanwhile, on 23 January, taxi drivers in Rome will stage a 24-hour strike over increased licence fees.

Germany: Train drivers announce week-long strike

• Train drivers in Germany will go on strike from 24 January-29 January.

The walkout will begin at 2am on Wednesday and continue until 6pm on Monday. It is the latest in a series of strikes in a long running dispute with train operator Deutsche Bahn over hours, pay and working conditions.

'Open-ended strikes' could hit Germany's rail network in the coming months if an agreement is not reached in the next collective bargaining negotiations.

Finland: Airports to be hit by strikes

• Members of Finland's JHL union, which represents around 12,000 airport workers, have announced a 48-hour strike on 1-2 February.

National carrier Finnair says it expects the walkout to have a significant impact on flights. If you have a flight booked between 31 January and 3 February, the airline will allow you to travel earlier or postpone your trip up until 15 March

Plane Catches Fire At Tokyo International Airport..

Japan had a rough start for 2024.

1. On Monday, powerful earthquakes rocked Japan, leaving a devastating toll with at least 48 people dead. Fires and landslides damaged thousands of buildings across the affected areas.

2. Then, on Tuesday around 6pm local time, a Japan Airlines flight collided with a Japanese coastguard plane heading to Niigata Airport for aid delivery.

The passenger plane landed in flames at Tokyo's Haneda Airport. The situation is critical, with rescue efforts underway amidst this unfortunate series of events. In a tragic turn, 5 out of 6 personnel on the coastguard plane lost their lives during the collision.

The Good Part - However, was that 379 people aboard the Japan Airlines jet managed to evacuate safely, a testament to the skill and professionalism of the airline staff.

This heartbreaking incident underscores the critical importance of aviation safety and serves as a poignant reminder to appreciate the dedication of those ensuring our protection in the skies.

Is it safe traveling to Japan ?

• The UK Foreign Office is giving a heads up about possible aftershocks following recent earthquakes. Right now, transport links are a bit haywire.

• If you find yourself in the affected zones, the smart move is to stick to local authorities' instructions. Keep tabs on NHK World news, the Japan Meteorological Agency, and the Japan National Tourism Agency for the freshest updates.

✦ Now what should you do if an earthquake hits?

• Shield your head with a bag or any available hard object, that’s what the National Tourism Agency recommends you.

• If within a hotel or accommodation, seek refuge under a durable table.

• Alternatively, opt for an open space or position yourself near a sturdy pillar to minimize exposure to falling objects.

Once the tremor subsides, identify the nearest exit and adhere to instructions provided by staff members.

Refrain from utilizing elevators and, if inside one during the earthquake, press all floor buttons and exit when it is deemed safe to do so. Prioritize caution and follow safety protocols diligently.

✦ And if a tsunami warning is issued..

Don't take it lightly. If it's just an advisory, waves up to a meter are possible. Stay clear of the ocean, rivers, and waterfronts. Head back to your pad and keep an eye out for updates.

Now, when it's a full-blown tsunami warning, we're talking waves up to 3 meters high. A major warning? 5-10-meter waves, hitting repeatedly. Iceland’s Volcano Erupts After Weeks Of Evacuation.

The volcano finally erupted in Iceland, after weeks of warnings of increased seismic activity in the area & evacuating 4,000 people were from the area. The eruption fissure measured about 4 kilometers (about 2.5 miles) long. The Blue Lagoon geothermal spa - one of Iceland’s biggest tourist attractions - will remain closed through at least Dec. 27.

Is It Safe To Travel To Iceland ?

The Foreign Office hasn't given Iceland a travel makeover yet, but they've pointed people to the Icelandic Met Office and Safe Travel Iceland for the latest advice.

Eruption zone is a no-go for now – respect the closure vibes. But overall, no red flags for traveling to Iceland, just steer clear of Grindavík and nearby spots. Listen to the locals, folks!

No 'no-go' warnings mean it's business as usual for airlines and holiday plans. No automatic refund magic for canceling.

Big deal: Blue Lagoon spa took a hit, closed on Nov 9 after earthquakes. Opened up for a bit on Dec 16, but guess what? Closed again after the eruption party. Other chill spots around also taking a break. Stay tuned for updates!

Have flights to Iceland been cancelled?  

Keflavik Airport is still up and running despite a volcano doing its thing nearby. No need to panic about travel plans just yet.

The Icelandic airport folks (ISAVIA) suggest keeping an eye on flight info, but for now, everything seems cool. No major ash drama in the air, just a little orange aviation alert.

Planes are taking off as planned – no cancellations or big delays at Keflavik. Icelandair and Play airlines are like, "No worries, folks. Schedules are on point."

Heads up: Roads to Grindavik and the Blue Lagoon are closed for now.

Of Riding The Harry Potter’s Train Could Soon Shut Down

Hold onto your wizard hats! The future of steam journeys on the enchanting Harry Potter railway line is at stake as West Coast Railways (WCR), the operator of the heritage route, contests safety rules demanding central locking systems on carriage doors. The Jacobite, famously featured as the Hogwarts Express, could face a hefty £7 million expense to comply with the new measures. The challenge by WCR injects suspense into the magical train ride, leaving fans on the edge of their seats about the fate of this beloved heritage route.

Issues With The Hogwarts Express

• The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) granted two 10-year exemptions for the Jacobite on carriage door locking rules, expiring in March 2023.

• Following a July inspection revealing safety concerns, the ORR issued a temporary exemption in August, which expired on November 30.

• The Jacobite operator, West Coast Railways (WCR), received another extension until early next year pending a judicial review, expected in January.

WCR's commercial manager, James Shuttleworth, expressed cautious optimism, highlighting the precarious situation and the ongoing push for the preservation of UK's railway heritage.
❝ It's our intention that we keep running it but if we have to fit door locking, it's going to be an expensive business. ❞ said commercial manager James Shuttleworth.

Most Importantly - A hefty warning came through, stating that incorporating locking systems into the classic 1950s slam-door carriages could ring up a bill of £7 million, threatening to erase a 10 years worth of profits.

Riding The Hogwarts Express

In peak season, about 750 people daily embark on the Jacobite's end-of-the-line journey, while others opt for trainspotting, enjoying the spectacle as it steams past.

Where Young Americans Want To Move From USA. - New Study Report

A recent survey conducted by Preply has revealed that an increasing number of young Americans aged 18 to 26 envision their future beyond the borders of the United States, more specifically in one of the European Union countries.

The study lists the top 20 countries that young Americans are considering for emigration, with nine EU countries securing a spot in the list.

The 9 EU countries part of the top 20 list that young Americans want to emigrate to are as follows:

1. Netherlands

2. Switzerland

3. Italy

4. Germany

5. Ireland

6. Sweden

7. Spain

8. France

9. Finland

2 Things were revealed in the survey,

• cost of living & the political climate were the primary drivers for young Americans aspiring to move to the nine EU countries.

• Additionally, the allure of universal healthcare & a desire for fresh cultural experiences emerged as significant factors motivating their consideration of emigration to these European destinations.

What was Surprising to note was that..

Influencers / digital nomads who work remotely and promote travel had little influence on young Americans wanting to relocate.

Additionally, despite the existence of online communities for people living abroad, only around 28 % of respondents believed these platforms could contribute to their decision to move to another country.

✦ The Future..

1. Furthermore, the survey uncovered that over a third of young Americans surveyed want to live in another country forever. Two-thirds of them plan to start a family in their chosen foreign spots, and a whopping 87% expressed that their eagerness to live abroad is either staying the same or growing.

2. Not just young Americans, but people of various ages are increasingly choosing Europe for a better quality of life and job opportunities. Beyond work-life balance, one big reason more Americans are moving to Europe is the widespread use of English in European institutions, making it easier to adapt without a major language barrier.
