Fellowships:

Amplifier Fellowship

The Amplifier Fellowship, supported by founding sponsor Netflix, provides a $30,000 unrestricted grant to six Black artists, plus additional year-round support. Applicants must identify as Black or African American; be an alum of Film Independent’s Project Involve or Artist Development program(s), or a past Spirit Awards nominee, or be nominated by a colleague arts organization; be a writer, director or producer; and apply with a current project in development (feature or episodic, fiction or nonfiction).

Cayton-Goldrich Family Foundation Fellowship

The Cayton-Goldrich Family Foundation Fellowships provide $10,000 grants to two (2) Jewish filmmakers who are accepted into Film Independent’s Artist Development programs.

The Climate Entertainment Development Grant

The Climate Entertainment Initiative will award a $25,000 development grant to a filmmaker who is accepted into Film Independent’s Screenwriting Lab or Fast Track with a climate-focused fiction feature.

Dolby Institute Fellowship

The Dolby Institute Fellowship will award an internationally-based Film Independent Fellow a direct post-production grant valued at $50,000, enabling the film to utilize the ultra-vivid color of Dolby Vision and the immersive sound of Dolby Atmos.

Imaginar Producers Residency

The inaugural Imaginar Producers Residency, made possible by The Walt Disney Company and Searchlight Pictures, and in collaboration with NALIP, supports three Latinx producers over a nine-month period, with each Fellow receiving a $50,000 grant and professional mentorship to further their projects and careers.

Imaginar TV Incubator for Fearless Latinx Creators

The inaugural Imaginar TV Incubator for Fearless Latinx Creators, made possible by FX Networks, in collaboration with NALIP, will sponsor six Latinx Creators, with each Fellow receiving a $3,000 grant and valuable support, insight on the FX Networks drama programming brand and direct access to industry leaders.

Fellowships:

Tulsa Artist Fellowship
Tulsa Artist Fellowship is a place-based, durational award that aims to support visionary arts practitioners. Realizing George Kaiser Family Foundation’s vision grounded in social change, Tulsa Artist Fellowship is committed to fostering an environment where a visionary community of artists and arts workers have the opportunity to thrive.

For the 2026-2028 term, awardees will each receive a total stipend of $150,000 paid over three-years for awarded project deliverables and general artistic practice costs, along with a $12,000 yearly housing stipend, $1,200 yearly health and wellness stipend, $1,200 yearly studio assistant stipend, $1,500 one-time studio move-in stipend, fully-subsidized studio spaces, and access to shared art-making facilities, and more.

2026 Creative Promise Prize in Fashion
The Vilcek Foundation will award six $50,000 prizes to young immigrants working in fashion curation, material innovation, makeup, hair, writing, curation, styling, design, and photography.

Arts Southeast's ON::View Artist Residency ProgramFeatured
Applications are now open for the On::View Artist Residency Program in Savannah, Georgia. The residency supports artists working in all media. Selected artists gain access to a high-visibility studio space to complete a new project, continue an in-progress endeavor, or conduct research exploring conceptual, material, performative, and social practices.

The Other Art Fair BrooklynFeatured
Applications are open for the 2025 season of The Other Art Fair Brooklyn, which returns to ZeroSpace this May. Submit your work to show at one of the fairs, expand your collector base, and join a global network.

Modern Renaissance is open to submissions from artists interested in being featured in the magazine. There is a $7 submission fee.

at Louis Place Artist Publishing Cohort (International)
The Artist Publishing Cohort is a new online initiative supporting eight artists working on a publishing project. Artists receive a $1,000 stipend, coaching, weekly workshops, and access to aLP resources.

Bosch Parade 2026 (International)
Nothing and nobody is perfect, and defects are everywhere. The Bosch Parade 2026 pays tribute to all these imperfections, sailing under the title Powered by defectfrom June 18 to 21, 2026. Artists and collectives of all disciplines are eligible to submit their proposals for the bi-annual floating parade.

World of Wearable Art Competition (International)
WOW is a world-renowned wearable art experience, where an annual design competition culminates in a spectacular show combining theatre, art, fashion, music, and performance. The event offers 25 winners $200,000 in total prizes.

Art 64 Live Painting Competition (International)
For the last three years, ART 64 has taken over the village of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. In a head-to-head, bracket-style painting tournament, 64 artists paint live for two days, while spectators vote for their favorites. Artists are incentivized throughout the competition, with a grand prize of $20,000.

SMACH Public Art Biennial Open Call (International)
Creatives from all fields are invited to submit proposals for the outdoor SMACH Dolomites Biennial 2025. The 10 winning projects will be showcased at various Alpine locations in Val Badia from July to September. Artists are awarded €2,000 and a five-day residency.

This innovative and timely initiative provides large-scale experiences with topics addressing humans’ connection to nature, beauty in the landscape, biodiversity, conservation, sustainability, and climate change, along with a stipend and a construction budget for fabrication and installation expenses.

Watershed 2025 Summer Ceramic Arts Residency (International)
These summer residencies offer artists uninterrupted time in a state-of-the-art ceramics studio. During a session, up to eighteen artists form a creative community while living and working on campus. Participants enjoy 24-hour studio access, accommodations, and meals. Seven themed sessions are offered. Full and partial scholarships are available.
Deadline: February 1, 2025.

Kala Institute Artist-in-Residence Program (International)
Artists working in various printmaking techniques, photo processes, book arts, and digital media can apply for this program. The fellowship includes a $3,000 stipend, 24/7 access to Kala’s facilities for one to nine months, one month of free housing, a free Kala class or workshop, and participation in a group exhibition at Kala Gallery. There is a $25 fee to apply.
Deadline: 9:00 p.m. PST on February 2, 2025.

Artists in Residence in Everglades (AIRIE) Residencies (International)
The AIRIE Residency program is a fully immersive experience that revolves around the core principles of process, experimentation, and expanding one’s artistic practice. The residency offers a $4,000 research grant, institutional support from AIRIE’s network and partners, and a month-long residency in Everglades National Park (with an additional $1,500 financial support for travel and food). There is a $20 application fee.
Deadline: February 3, 2025, or when 500 applications have been received.

MacDowell Fellowship (International)
Artists of all backgrounds working in architecture, film/video arts, interdisciplinary arts, literature, music composition, theater, and visual arts are eligible. About 300 artists are selected each year and provided exclusive use of a studio, accommodations, and three prepared meals a day for two to six weeks. There is a $30 application fee.
Deadline: February 10, 2025.

Long Meadow Residency (U.S.)
Long Meadow Art Residency is a six-week to three-month solo residency in the Berkshire Mountains. LMAR offers studio space, housing, a $3,000 monthly living stipend, a $2,500 supply budget, and access to a vehicle for transportation.
Deadline: 11:59 p.m. EST on February 15, 2025.

The Watermill Center Summer Program (International)
This residency brings 20 artists together for four weeks at The Watermill Center. Participants are invited to develop new works alongside emerging artists and established creative professionals from various countries and disciplines. There is a $12 application fee.

Self as Universe: Mending Our Collective Ecosystem (International)
Open to artists of all disciplines working with environmental and cultural issues, this residency offers a $3,000 stipend, $2,000 material budget, accommodations, meals, and studio space.

Arts/Industry Residency at John Michael Kohler Arts Center (International)
Focus on creating work using industrial materials and processes in studios at Kohler Co.’s factory in Wisconsin. Experience in clay and metal is not required. Twelve three-month residencies are open for 2026.

The Seattle Prize Masters Fellowship (International)
Early-career representational painters with a commitment to the classical tradition are encouraged to apply for this new fellowship. Between five and ten artists will be chosen for the program, which awards a $50,000 annual stipend, free studio space in Seattle, mentorship, and support.

💖 Spring 2025 QEST Grants (U.K.)
QEST offers three grants to support makers and conservators at various career stages, supporting contemporary and traditional craft, as well as the exploration of innovative techniques. Three scholarships and grants range from £3k to £18k.

💖LA Arts Community Fire Relief Fund (Los Angeles)
Led by the J. Paul Getty Trust with support from a coalition of major arts organizations and philanthropists, this fund is available to artists and arts workers in all disciplines impacted by the unprecedented wildfire crisis. Individuals may apply only once for up to $10K. Funds are unrestricted, do not count as taxable income, and can be used in any way that alleviates financial hardship.
📅 Deadline: 5:00 p.m. PST on February 18, 2025.

💖 Asian Women Giving Circle Grants (New York City)
The AWGC's request for proposals is open to both 501(c)(3) organizations and individual artists. Projects must highlight women and gender-expansive people’s leadership and/or central role and demonstrate a commitment to NYC-based communities. Six to eight project grants will be awarded, contingent on available funding. The maximum grant amount is $8K

💖 The Adolf and Esther Gottlieb Emergency Grant (International)
This program provides one-time financial assistance to qualified painters, printmakers, and sculptors whose needs resulted from an unforeseen catastrophic incident and who lack the resources to meet that situation. Awardees typically receive $5K, up to $15K

💖Adobe Creative Residency Community Fund (Ukraine)
This fund commissions visual artists to create company projects on a rolling basis. Awardees will receive between $500 and $5K.

As we continue working on our documentary, which focuses on the urgent need for veteran suicide prevention, we are exploring different healing modalities that could potentially make a huge difference in the lives of those who have served our country. We believe that one of the most powerful ways to heal trauma and stress is through alternative therapies—things like music therapy, art therapy, yoga, sports activities, and even outdoor adventures.

Now, we need your help!

We’re conducting research and gathering insights to better understand which of these alternative healing methods can truly help veterans in their journey toward healing and hope. We would love for you to take a moment to reflect on the following questions:

1️⃣ What alternative healing modalities do you think could help support veteran suicide prevention, and why?
There are a range of therapies to consider: music therapy, art therapy, filmmaking, acting, songwriting, yoga, tai chi, hiking, cycling, traveling, and many more. What do you believe holds the most promise for healing veterans from the stress and trauma they face?

2️⃣ Have you or someone you know benefited from alternative therapies like songwriting, filmmaking, hiking, sports, or animal therapy? What impact did it have?
If you or someone close to you has found healing through unconventional therapies, we’d love to hear your story! Your personal experience is invaluable in understanding how these practices can positively impact mental health.

3️⃣ What barriers do you think veterans face in accessing alternative healing practices, such as sports, traveling, ikebana, or filmmaking? How can we make these resources more accessible?

I am redirecting the final touches on this newsletter column after what should have been an uneventful flight from Vancouver, BC, to Irvine, California. I am not a big fan of early morning flights, and today reminded me why. We woke up at 5 am to find that our flight was postponed by almost an hour. It did not really matter because our prearranged Uber could not be changed. Knowing that wheelchair waits could be long, we were pleased to see a special needs and family check-in.

The number of wheelchairs needed was not too long, but we found out that priority was solely based on flight time, and we needed to go to the lounge for my husband to take his medication with food. Our ultimate solution was that my husband offered to push someone else in a wheelchair, which helped him walk. It was interesting that the new titanium hardware in his back did not set off the metal detector, but my hip set off mine. Preboarding was smooth, only to wait another 1.5 hours on the tarmac. After an uneventful flight, we ended with an 8-plane backup for gates, with our gate occupied by a plane with mechanical issues that could not move. One hour later, and we were finally picking up our luggage. Our 3-hour flight doubled its time to 6. Yet, we are, no worse for the wear. 

So, while traveling can present unique challenges for veterans and anyone with disabilities, recent updates to the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) and resources available from certified advocates are making significant strides in improving the travel experience. This article highlights the key improvements in air travel regulations, the role of Special Needs Ambassadors, and special deals for veterans. 

Key Improvements in Air Travel 

Enhanced Dignity in Travel 

The ACAA has been updated to emphasize the importance of treating all passengers with dignity. Airlines are now required to provide better training for staff to ensure they understand and respect the needs of travelers with disabilities. This commitment to dignity is crucial, particularly for veterans who may have experienced challenges in the past, as well as children and adults on the spectrum, and mental health issues. 

Clear Communication During Delays 

One of the most notable changes is the requirement for airlines to improve communication regarding delays. For flights delayed by more than two hours, airlines must offer compensation options, including meal vouchers and accommodation. This change recognizes the additional stress that delays can cause, especially for those with disabilities. Our experience fell just short of those triggers.  

Financial Compensation for Significant Delays 

If a flight is delayed for three hours or more, passengers may be entitled to financial compensation, often provided as travel credits or refunds. This policy aims to alleviate the financial burden that can accompany travel disruptions, making it easier for veterans to manage unexpected changes in their travel plans. 2025 is about to change the requirements for airlines to provide immediate cash or credit card refunds. We will be keeping you up with the real-time implications. 

 DPNA Code for Special Assistance 

The Disabled Person Needing Assistance (DPNA) code is a crucial tool for ensuring that travelers needing special assistance are recognized throughout their journey. Be sure to inform airlines of specific needs when booking flights, pre, in-flight, and upon arrival. Always reconfirm your special status at each step of the journey.  

 Family Seating Rights 

Under the updated ACAA regulations, airlines are now mandated to ensure that families traveling together can sit in proximity without incurring extra fees. This is particularly beneficial for veterans traveling with dependents or caregivers, as it helps maintain family unity during travel. 

Arranging Special Equipment 

Cruising can be an excellent option for veterans seeking a solo getaway or multigeneration celebration, but it often requires specific accommodations for those with disabilities. I have helped many clients evaluate their special needs against the generalized mobility-unique special needs across all types of cruises, river boats, barges and yachts to ensure that everyone has access to the necessary equipment, such as mobility aids, accessible cabins, and specialized services provided by the vessel or specialized equipment services offering seamless service. My ability to navigate the complexities of travel ensures a seamless experience, allowing more people to even consider travel and raise their overall enjoyment. 

Special Deals for Veterans 

In addition to the legislative improvements and the support of advocates like The P2P Life, many travel companies are now offering special deals specifically for veterans. These deals can include discounts on airfare, cruises, and accommodations on land, sea, and air, making travel more affordable and accessible. 

The latest deal we saw was the cruise line Margaritaville, offering FREE inside cabins for 2 on selected sailings; just pay taxes, tips and items not normally covered by a cruise fare. 3^rd and 4^th in cabin pay standard cruise fare and taxes. 

Don’t Leave Home Without It: Benefits of Travel Insurance 

With the enhancements to the ACAA and the availability of veteran-specific deals, travel insurance-only supplements become increasingly important. 

Policies often cover: 

Trip Cancellation and Delay: Travelers can claim compensation if a flight is delayed or canceled, providing peace of mind. 

Medical Assistance: Many travel insurance plans offer provisions for medical emergencies that may arise during travel, ensuring veterans receive prompt care. 

Lost or Damaged Assistive Devices: Insurance can cover the repair or replacement of essential equipment, such as wheelchairs or mobility aids. 

Important legislated changes and AI use are making travel more accessible and dignified for veterans and anyone with disabilities. By understanding these changes and utilizing available resources, veterans can navigate air travel and cruise experiences with greater confidence. With exclusive special deals for veterans and the assurance of appropriate accommodations, the journeys ahead are brighter than ever. 

Look next week for some of the best uses of AI in travel. In the US, you can now use ChatGPT and your WhatsApp for 15 minutes per day to have a chat or teach yourself languages, decide on best restaurants catering to your favorite food or special dietary needs,

The Journey of Justin Roy, An Indigenous WWII Veteran

In the vast repository of World War II history, many stories stand out as powerful testaments to individual soldier’s resilience and patriotism against the complex nature of identity, service, and citizenship. For Remembrance Day, it is fitting to share the story of Justin Roy, an Indigenous Canadian veteran whose life journey spans the reserve of M’Chigeeng to the shores of Juno Beach on D-Day, and whose bravery was not respected at home, causing him to leave Canada for Mesa, Arizona.

Justin Roy was born and raised on the M'Chigeeng reserve in Canada. His father died at 13 and he left home to work in lumber camps, eventually finding his way to a steel mill in Sault Ste. Marie.

A CALL TO SERVE

In 1943, at 19, Roy enlisted to serve what he believed was his country-Canada. For Roy and others, joining was no simple feat. They faced additional scrutiny, fighting against a system rife with systemic bias. Unlike non-Indigenous counterparts, they had to prove their worth repeatedly, challenging prejudices that underestimated their capabilities, starting in World War 1 when they were not permitted to enlist, but they did.

The biggest test came on June 6, 1944—D-Day. As part of the second wave storming Normandy's Juno Beach, Roy found himself thrust into one of history's most pivotal battles. The cost was staggering; only 45 of the 200 men in his unit survived. Roy's own survival was a testament to his resourcefulness and will to live. "On about the second day, I crawled under a tank that had been blown up and played dead for two days," he recounted, "and that was only the beginning."

For Roy and his fellow Indigenous soldiers, the fight at Juno Beach symbolized more than just the struggle against Nazi tyranny. They literally fought for their lives, as they demonstrated their stamina, capability, and an unwavering dedication to a cause and a country that failed to recognize them as equals.

AN UNFULFILLED PROMISE

The bitter irony emerged upon his return to Canada. Like many minority veterans, he encountered a cold reality that starkly contrasted with the brotherhood of the battlefield. Denied re-employment and faced with blatant discrimination, Roy's disillusionment reached its peak when he was refused service at a local bar for being an "Indian." "I just broke down," he recalled.

The final blows came when applying for veteran benefits. The Canadian government informed Roy that he was not entitled to keep the farm machinery he bought with his veteran’s grant and worse, he was not recognized as a Canadian! A cruel twist for a man who had risked his life for the country. This legal quagmire, which affected many Indigenous people born under unique circumstances or on reserve lands, felt like a betrayal of the highest order. "They may not want me," Roy told the Manitoulin Expositor, "but that doesn't erase who I am or where I come from."

His words encapsulate the resilience of a man facing systemic injustice, clinging to his identity in the face of governmental denial. This post-war treatment reveals a dark chapter in Canadian history that took decades to end. Despite their sacrifices, they were often excluded from veteran pensions, land grants, and other reintegration programs. The federal policy, classified Indigenous individuals as "wards of the state," deeming them ineligible for the same compensations as other veterans. “It felt like a door was slammed shut in my face. I’d given years of my life to serve this country, thinking I belonged, only to be told I was not one of them.”

Heartbroken and disillusioned, Roy and his wife made the decision to relocate to Mesa, Arizona. They sought a new beginning, hoping to find a sense of belonging that Canada had denied them. Yet even in this new land, challenges persisted. Despite excellent credit, they struggled to secure a bank loan, forcing them to live in their car for a while.

ADVOCACY AND LEGACY-LOST CANADIANS

In Arizona, Roy found an ally in Don Chapman, an advocate for "Lost Canadians"—individuals denied citizenship due to complicated or unjust laws. Chapman, who had faced his own citizenship struggles, reached out to support those like Roy who had been unjustly excluded from their rightful status. Bill C-37 in Canada rectified some of those issues. 

Roy built a life of community and purpose. He ran his own business until the age of 97, a testament to his indomitable spirit and he adds, his PTSD. In August, he celebrated his 100th birthday as West Bay Band-Manitoulin Island's last known living First Nations World War II veteran.

The story of Justin Roy serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by Indigenous soldiers and the systemic failures that denied them proper recognition. As Canada (and the United States) continues to grapple with its’ history, Roy's story emphasizes the importance of honoring all soldiers equally and upholding the rights of all veterans,

As we remember the sacrifices of veterans like Justin Roy, we must also confront the uncomfortable truths of our past. Their stories compel us to ensure that all veterans, regardless of background, receive the respect, support, and recognition they deserve. In doing so, we honor not just their service, but their enduring fight for justice and equality.

Lest we forget the complex, inspiring, and sometimes painful journeys of heroes like Justin Roy—their stories continue to educate, inspire, and drive us towards a more inclusive and equitable future. I was proud to share this story in a meeting held this weekend at an unrelated event for Changemakers at a ANAVET (ANAF)  Veteran’s Hall, which accept all returning veterans, (unlike Legions).  November 8^th has officially become Indigenous Veteran’s Day in Canada.  

Lest we ignore. More than ever, in North America, we must ensure that our veterans get the respect and help that they need, which is why Niurka Castaneda’s documentary produced by Amor Umbrella Film Company, Keep on Living about the PTSD crisis amongst veterans needs to get the funding and attention that it deserves.

Alright, folks, buckle up because I’ve had the most bizarre Facebook experience. After years of using Facebook to build community, share memories, and inspire others, my account was suspended without warning. Facebook claimed I’d violated their rules, yet each appeal comes back with, “Oops, no violation here!”—only for the cycle to repeat days later, suspending every connected account I have. 🤦🏽‍♀️

It wasn’t until I dug deeper that I found out Facebook is rolling out a pay-to-get-verified program for creators and businesses, which makes me wonder: are they cracking down on small businesses and creators to “encourage” us to pay for that little blue check? Anyone else suspecting this? 💸

Customer service has been… nonexistent. It’s been me vs. a glitchy AI bot, with no way to reach a real human for support. And here’s the kicker: after years of sharing personal and business memories, Facebook’s feature to recover my content also doesn’t work. All those precious photos, connections, and years of shared moments? Vanished into the void.

Heads up! Even if this hasn’t happened to you yet, you may want to take steps to secure your data, photos, and memories before Facebook decides to come for you, too. It’s no joke!
