What You Do When You Can't See

Near the summit of Everest, I lost my vision. Completely.

I still had to get down.

No pause button. No waiting for conditions to improve. The mountain doesn't care about your circumstances. So I moved—blind, one step at a time—down one of the most dangerous descents on earth.

That experience taught me something I use every day:

Clarity is not a prerequisite for action.

When you can't see the path, you fall back on what you built before things got hard. Your training. Your instincts. Your fundamentals. Vision loss doesn't end movement—it changes it.

Leadership works the same way. At some point, the ground shifts. The market, the team, the plan—something stops making sense and no one has a clear line of sight forward. Most people freeze. They wait for certainty before they commit.

But certainty rarely arrives on schedule.

I didn't need to see base camp to survive. I needed to find the next foothold. Then the next. The descent happened one small commitment at a time, without guarantees, in conditions I couldn't control.

That's not recklessness. That's how you lead when clarity is unavailable—which, if you're doing anything that matters, is most of the time.

The Long Way Is the Way

Most people don’t quit because the goal is impossible. They quit because progress feels slow.

In the mountains, the hardest days aren’t always the summit days. They’re the long, repetitive ones in between, where you gain altitude one miserable step at a time. Real progress can even feel like you’re moving backward. You climb high, then descend to sleep lower so your body can recover and acclimate. You move loads in stages. You camp in harsh conditions. It feels inefficient. It feels slow, but it’s the only way that works.

Rushing altitude can be lethal. You don’t negotiate with physics. You respect the process.

The same pattern shows up in leadership and life. People want transformation without the unglamorous middle. They want strength without putting in the work, they demand trust without earning it consistently, and they expect calm without conditioning.

Endurance is built quietly, reputation compounds slowly, and resilience is layered through repetition.

You rarely see dramatic change day to day. What you see are small deposits: one disciplined workout, one hard conversation handled well, one decision aligned with values instead of mood. Over time, those deposits raise your ceiling.

In mountaineering, you earn the right to go higher by proving you can handle where you are. In life, it’s no different. Handle today well before demanding tomorrow’s altitude.

Where are you trying to rush a process that requires stages? And where might steady progress actually be progress?

The long path may not look impressive in the moment, but it compounds. Stay disciplined long enough, and the results speak for themselves.

Trust the System You Built

When pressure hits, thinking narrows.

People imagine high-stress moments as clarity arriving on cue. A switch flips. The right answer appears. That’s not how it works.

In rescue swimmer training, the system mattered more than confidence. When chaos stacked with multiple panicked victims, bad information, and physical exhaustion, decision-making gave way to execution. You did what had already been built.

Observe. Orient. Decide. Act.

When the water turned violent and the noise took over, the system carried the load. Muscle memory stepped in when thinking shut down. That wasn’t luck. It was repetition, done long before the moment arrived.

I saw the same thing years later in the mountains.

High altitude strips margin fast. Vision and coordination fade. Decision-making costs margin. In those conditions, untrained improvisation is a liability. You don’t experiment randomly or invent from scratch. You adapt within what you already know works.

Step. Breathe. Check. Repeat.

The system doesn’t make the situation easier. It makes you reliable inside it.

Most breakdowns I see in leadership, relationships, and work don’t come from a lack of effort. They come from reactive improvisation when conditions degrade. People try to overthink their way through moments that require execution.

They haven’t built the system yet.

A system doesn’t have to be complicated. It just must be practiced. How you start hard conversations. How you respond when plans change. How you recover after a mistake instead of compounding it. Those patterns decide outcomes long before pressure shows up.

Under stress, you won’t access what you intend to do.
You’ll default to what you’ve rehearsed.

So ask yourself this:

Where in your life are you still depending on improvisation when the cost of failure says you should be relying on a system?

Build it now.
Trust it later.

Calm is a Skill

People like to say someone is “just calm under pressure.”
As if it’s temperament. Wiring. Luck.

It isn’t.

I learned that early in rescue swimmer training. The first time things went sideways, there was no heroic clarity—just noise, movement, and a body trying to react faster than it could think. A student survivor attacked, and we went under. The moment compressed. Instinct said rush.

Training said slow down.

Not emotionally—physically. Control the breath. Set the hands. Make the approach clean. Do the next right thing and nothing more. Calm wasn’t something I felt in that moment. It was something I executed.

That lesson followed me long after the water.

Years later, high on Everest, when my vision failed and the mountain stayed indifferent, calm showed up the same way. Not as confidence. Not as the absence of fear. Fear was there—loud. It just wasn’t in charge.

Calm is not personality.
It’s rehearsal.

Under real pressure, you don’t rise to the occasion. You fall back on what you’ve practiced. Breathing before reacting. Narrowing your focus. Choosing accuracy over speed. Breaking the moment down until it’s small enough to manage.

That’s what calm looks like when it counts.
And it’s trainable.

You don’t need a crisis to work on it. You start in the quiet moments. You slow your breath before you speak. You resist the urge to fix everything at once. You take the next step cleanly and let the rest wait.

Do that enough times and calm becomes familiar. Automatic. Muscle memory. Available when you need it.
Not because life gets easier—but because you get steadier.

As you step into a new year, ask yourself this:
Where in your life are you relying on instinct, when what you really need is training?

VETERAN’S DAY

Every year, Veterans Day gives us a moment to pause — to remember the men and women who stepped forward, knowing full well what that commitment might cost.

The Fall

The fall season seemed to arrive overnight. I’ve been on the move—dropping my son, Jordan, off at GCU, with a little diversion through Bryce Canyon, the Grand Tetons, and Yellowstone. From there it was off to Nashville for the American Association of Christian Counselors conference, podcast recordings, movie discussions, and all the usual book launch chaos.

All good things, but I’ve realized my favorite season isn’t any one in particular—it’s the beginning of each one. Those transitions in the PNW are always incredible, and I hate to miss them. But such is life on the road.

Happy 4th of July!

June flew by in a blur—but it was packed with purpose.
