Say Goodbye to Topping the Golf Ball

Ever find yourself topping the ball? You’re not alone. This pesky problem is usually because your left arm breaks down through impact. You might think you need to help the ball into the air by swinging hard with your arms. Wrong move! That’s how you end up with that frustrating top shot.

And let's be honest, we've all heard it a million times from the peanut gallery: "Keep your head down!"

Forget that. Here’s a better tip: keep your eye on the golf ball.

Here’s a quick drill from our coach Bryan Schippel:

1. Tee It Up

Put the ball on a tee. This helps stop the urge to scoop the ball into the air. Trust me, it makes a difference.

2. Focus on Your Finish

Finish with your arms extended in an "L" position.

Generate power from the ground up.

Keep your left side strong so it doesn’t break down.

3. Weight Transfer

As you finish your swing, get on top of your front foot.

Your belt buckle should be facing the target.

All your weight should be off your back foot.

4. Practice Consistently

By practicing with the ball on a tee, you can focus more on your swing mechanics. Don’t worry about making perfect contact just yet.

Get consistent with this drill to build new muscle memory. Once you’re comfortable, move back to hitting off the grass.

This simple adjustment can make a world of difference in your game.

Simple TIP to IMPROVE Balance and Stability

We have been talking a lot lately about your distance and how to improve your drive. Today's tip adds to that, aiming for a smooth swing with a balanced finish on your tippy toe.

As you know, arm power alone won't improve your distance. Instead, balance, stability, and flexibility are key.

Coach Jentry Schippel introduces the Balance Compass drill to help you achieve these qualities.

The Balance Compass Drill

Set Up: Place a circle of cones around you.
Starting Position: Stand on one foot at the center of the circle.
Movements: Jump out towards each direction—north, south, east, and west—then return to the center each time.
Complete the Circle: Once you've jumped in all directions, you've completed one circle.

Completing these movements forms one circle. Switch legs and repeat to work all the balance muscles in your body.

This drill not only improves balance and stability but also enhances your overall swing performance. Incorporate it into your routine for noticeable improvements in your golf game.

3 Exercises to Up Your Golf Game This Weekend

It's that time of year again. The sun's out, the grass is green, and your favorite courses are calling your name. But before you hit the links, let's get you primed with the three most effective exercises to boost your distance, avoid injuries, and improve stability.

The Lunge Complex

First up is from one of our amazing Coaches here Jentry Schippel explaining the Lunge Complex. So grab your club and let's get started.

Step 1: Forward Lunge with Twist

Hold your club horizontally in front of you.
Step forward into a lunge, and twist your torso towards the leg that is forward.
Return to the starting position and repeat with the other leg.

Step 2: Side Lunge with Twist

Step to the side into a lunge, keeping your other leg straight.
Twist your torso towards the leg that is lunging.

These lunges help enhance flexibility and strength in your legs and core, crucial for a powerful and stable golf swing.

Golf Swing Stretch (5 minutes)

No club needed for this one.

Slow Swings:

Mimic your golf swing slowly, extending your range of motion.
Hold the top and bottom positions of your swing for 2-3 seconds.
Perform 10 slow, controlled swings to engage your core, hips, and back.

This stretch is a game-changer. Perfect your form, feel the burn, and swing like a pro.

Hamstring and Lower Back Stretch (30 seconds)

Now for a little TLC for your lower back and hamstrings.

Bend and Stretch:

Hold your club in front of you.
Bend forward at the hips, letting the club support you.
Hold this position for 30 seconds.
Repeat three times.

Wrap-Up

More Exercises to Look Good On and Off the Greens

This last week we gave you all a few exercises to try to get ready for this next weekend.

And in case you don’t already know…

This next weekend is going to be a BUSY WEEKEND on the greens.

The reason??

It’s because everyone is going to be trying to recover from losing their bets during March Madness by betting on the golf course.

And in case you didn’t already know that…

I’m totally making that up 😂

HOWEVER, with the consistent warm weather coming in we are definitely going to need to get those muscles back into shape!!

#1 Train For Strength NOT for Looks. When you go to the gym for whatever reason, to golf better or just be better, it’s essential you never forget why you’re there. If you’re training to golf better you can still have a killer workout. It doesn’t mean you’re taking a day off. Working the full body and not just for big biceps and chest will help you get a great workout AND a great game.

#2 Go to the gym with a gameplan. When you go to the gym having an exact plan for what exercises you’re hitting and keeping track of week-to-week progress not only increases your results but also the likelihood of you going to the gym. There’s nothing worse than going to the gym and realizing you have no idea what you’re doing. Gabe Caldwell also has great workout plans for this.

#3 Not all “Workouts” Involve Weights. Sometimes the best way you can improve your game and body is by doing exercises to increase mobility and flexibility. Doing free weight exercises helps to increase explosiveness and reduces the load on joints. Not to mention, they’re a killer workout.

UPDATE: Tiger Woods’ NEW Golf League Delayed Another Year

This isn’t the first time we’re writing about Tiger Woods’ NEW Indoor Golf Facility and League he’s created.

And, this isn’t the first time he’s had to push back the opening to his league either.

But this latest push might be worse than simple minor construction scheduling.

You see, most buildings have those things called “roofs”….

Tiger Woods’ facility no longer has a “roof”.

Best exercises to prepare you for this weekend’s golf trip

Hit the gym to CRUSH the greens this week

If you’re wanting to work on your golf swing off the course a great thing to do is strengthening the parts of your body that help you to deliver that killer drive you’ve been working on.

BUT ALSO…

The right exercises also help you to maintain your strength through those longer rounds of golf.

In an interview with Dicks Sporting Goods Rory McIlroy said the following about the importance of doing those exercises before you even pick up a club 👇

And while any workouts you do that focus on Shoulder Strength, Back Flexibility, Quads, etc. are helpful…

Here’s a simple routine you can do just a couple days this week to get in (or even maintain) peak golf performance.

It should only take you about 20 minutes and while it isn’t going to make you walk away dripping in sweat…

(Though if it does that might be a sign of other things than your golf swing to work on)

But it will focus on developing the explosiveness you need to increase your ball swing speed AND help to maintain your endurance.

1️⃣ Vertical Jumps

👉 10 reps for max height

👉 Focus on going down to about 90 degree squat before jumping

👉 IMPORTANT: Your goal is to not to finish this as fast as possible but instead to jump as high as possible on each rep, you’ll be surprised how sore just 10 of these will make you

2️⃣ Two-Hand Medicine Ball Throws

👉 10 reps throwing max distance with back straight

👉 For weight, try to go 20-35lbs. We’re training muscles here, NOT trying to become Mr. Olympia. Work on pushing the weight as far as possible

👉 Best to do in a chair if you can and have your partner retrieve it or if that’s not possible just stand 8-10 feet back from a fortified wall

👉 IMPORTANT: You’re not going for a world record with these but instead trying to keep your back straight to force the rest of your body (especially your chest and triceps) to help you push the ball forward

3️⃣ Dumbbell lunges

👉 2 sets of 8 each leg

👉 “If you can’t do above 50% of your bodyweight for 8 reps then it’s actually a tell-tale sign that improving your strength is the main thing holding you back” - Jon Tattersall, Top 100 Coach at Titleist Performance Institute

4️⃣ One Arm Cable Chess Press

👉 2 sets of 8 each arm

👉 For these you want about 30% of your body weight.

5️⃣ Weighted Russian Twists

👉 3 sets of 10 each side with kettle bell (weight is entirely up to you)

The Secrets to “Rickie Fowler-Like” Backspins

Not all shots are created equal. Even Rickie says that all the training and experience in the world can’t prevent bad grass, slope, or weather from ruining your shot.

Strike a pose. Hold your shot afterwards so there’s nothing bringing your shot off line. This is also great for having others check your shot or for filming so you can see where you’re ending up.

Keep ball forward in your stance. The more forward it is (too an extent obviously), the steeper the ball comes down and the more your backspin kicks in. Peter Finch Golf has a 4-minute video that briefly goes over this.

Get under the ball, NOT the grass. When you create a divot with your wedge…you’ve messed up. The hole club face needs to hit your ball if you want maximum backspin. Any grass between your ball and the grooves of your club (don’t forget to keep those filed by the way) reduces grip and your spin to.

Keep weight on leading foot. Rickie recommended to try and keep 60-70% of your weight on your lead foot. This allows you to reduce the power and distance your shot has while allowing your club and form to do all the work.

Just watch how Scottie Scheffler played this weekend.

He made EVERY putt within 15 feet.

And that’s not an exaggeration.

There wasn’t a single bogie on his score card.

In fact, he even set a record for the best score of the final round by 2 shots.

I couldn’t recommend watching his 15-minute highlight video from this weekend enough.

I’m talking about the people with amazing 150+ yard shots with a 7-iron that lands just outside of the green and score a 4 on a par 5.

But then they somehow 3-putt.

Somehow this week though, he took that putting game from the past and left it in his hotel room on the way to the course.

Wyndam Clark said, in regards to Scheffler’s putting game, "I never want to wish ill on anybody, but if he starts putting positive each week, it's going to be really hard to beat."

The Dawn of the Dads Has Arrived…

In case you missed it, earlier this month the boys,

(or at least the drunk boys 😂)

Took over the golf course at the Waste Management Open.

Well next month it looks like the Dads are likely to arise from the ashes and descend upon the greens.

And guess what?

Can’t.

Wait.

Shoutout as always to ChatGPT for making up for my lack of graphic design skills 😂

But for real, dads are big for golf.

In case you didn’t know, a lot of people who golf have kids and even grandkids.

(Shocking, I know)

This weekend though my social media timeline was blowing up with dads taking their kids on the course and I was loving it.

I even saw a new golf stroller that I might be sending over to my brother so we can play with my nieces and nephews this season!

And that’s not an ad for that company by the way, we’ll always let you know when we’re affiliated with companies and when we can get you all the good deals 😉

PGA Tour even says BECOMING a dad can improve your golf game 👀

So feel free to send that to your buddies who are holding out on giving your kids best friends.

But a lot of pros use their kids to help them train for golf…

With all of this said, another reason I love seeing golfers out with their kids is, according to ResearchGate, 68.5% of Junior Golfers had their first experience golfing with a parent.

So get those kids out on the golf course and give me some good future golfers to watch on the PGA Tour in the future 😂.

7 Tips PGA Players and Coaches Recommend to Get Below 90

Breaking the “90 Barrier” is one of the biggest benchmarks for golfers.

For people like you and me it’s the telltale sign that we are better than average.

And as well let’s us know the time and money we’ve spent is more than worth it.

But let’s also break down the science of what it takes to get below 90 on our score cards.

In case you hadn’t thought it through before, to get at most an 89…

You can only go above par 17 times throughout the entire 18 holes

OR have a cumulative score of no more than +17.

If you already knew that, then sorry for wasting your time 😬

With that being said though it also leads me right into the first tip:

1️⃣ Spend time on your weaknesses. Taking a look at your last couple of scorecards will easily let you know where you gain the most strokes. Maybe you struggle on par 5 holes or simply ones with water hazards. Regardless of where you struggle the most, try to carve out time just practicing on those.

2️⃣ Hit Your Wedges. Your wedge is one of the most important clubs in your bag, so if these are your weakness then I HIGHLY recommend you focus on them. But ensure every time you get to the driving range you’re practicing laying these up as close to the pin as you can.

3️⃣ One Course at A Time. You won’t be able to break 90 at every course at the beginning. So try and find one course you and your group can play at more frequently so you can focus on getting the best score possible there. This will help break any negative thinking of “it can’t be done”.

4️⃣ Practice in the Rain. Going along with working on your weaknesses, you don’t always have the shot you want. Practice hard shots intentionally when you can or even take a mulligan and redo hard shots during your round of 18.

5️⃣ Master Your Par 3’s. Like I said before, breaking 90 is just ensuring every hole is a bogie at most. If you can ensure your par 3’s are sunk at 3 or even 2 then you’ve boughten yourself some grace on the harder par 4’s and 5’s.

6️⃣ Nail Your First Tee. You never want to start out the day with a rough start. So try and be as calm and focused as possible from the get go with breathing exercises or practice shots at the range and you’ll set yourself up for success.

7️⃣ Don’t Follow Bad Shots With Bad Decisions. You’re undoubtedly going to have bad shots when you play. Even with only 89 shots taken throughout the day, you’ll have a couple accidental hooks or chipping the top of the ball. This is why staying calm and aiming for the safe fairway shot as opposed to the impossible “play the slice” to land next to the hole shot is always recommended by scratch golfers. (No matter what that miniature Tiger Woods voice is saying on your shoulder)

I’m not sure if you’ve heard this name yet or not…

Martin Borgmeier, the current world record holder of the longest drive.

Which a confirmed 520 yards in case you didn’t know.

And today he’s going to be your coach to hit your driver further.

He’ll be giving us what he calls the, “3 Athlete Buttons”

🔵 Button #1 - The Takeaway. Your takeaway is your preparation before you swing. Martin’s unique style is that every golfer needs to have more movement in their swing. He’s a firm believer that “static golf is not made for distance.” What he recommends is that people create “triggers” in their takeaway. Something that preps your body to get into the unique form you only really use with a driver. His is he slightly moves back and shifts between his left and right foot before lifting his club back. You can watch his approach to this HERE.

🔵 Button #2 - The Backswing. Going along with the previous tip on emphasizing movement, Martin Borgmeier has probably one of the fastest backswings around. When asked why he did this he related it to loading a spring. After all, it can sometimes be easier to pull a spring back faster than moving it slowly. Increasing that speed on your backswing and then slamming it down at the same speed allows you to increase the length of your “hand path” and allow your swing to have more time and space to build up speed. It’s speed first, then distance. So if you can focus on increasing your speed you can increase how far your ball ends up going

To ensure you don’t pull something in your back trying this, I’d recommend watching some of 18Strong’s videos to stay limber

🔵 Button #3 - The downswing. Now that you’re moving and grooving you’re ready to unleash that swing on the ball. See, amateurs make the mistake of moving the shoulder and pelvis at the same time. This makes it so you come down hard on the ball and shank it in the bushes. Instead, move your foot, then your pelvis, then your shoulders. Having this sequence down is key so make sure your left heel is off the ground at the beginning of your swing so you can slam it down and rip through your swing. This exact sequence is also one of the triggers he uses to get ready for those big swings you need to catch up after you 3-putt one too many times.

Now, this isn’t too say you should throw accuracy out the window but instead to try to unleash your speed and then work on making that more accurate afterwards.

BIG Things Happened at PGA Tour’s Genesis Event

In just a few lines to sum up this last weekend’s PGA Tournament:

✅ Hideki Matsuyama clenched his 7th PGA Masters

✅ Tiger had a brush with Influenza but had a clean bill of health the following day

Oh and…

✅ Jordan Spieth was almost disqualified for going to be the bathroom.

But…

You know how much I love the rest of these types of stories.

Now I personally don’t care for the story about Jordan Spieth.

It’s a funny title (one of the main reasons I included it) but other than that it’s basically a self-reporting error he made on his scorecard.

Tiger and Hideki on the other hand.

THAT was a crazy way to end this weekend.

Hideki had a wicked impressive close to the tour and he pulled an all-time low record of a 62 at the Genesis Open.

Strangely enough, the entire time I was watching it I was more and more excited to watch the Netflix series that’d recap the weekend lol.

But even Tiger Woods made a comment on how historic his playing was!

Sadly though, Tiger wasn’t there to congratulate the 7-time champ because of his sickness.

Hearing Hideki even say he was sad he couldn’t shake his idols hand was all the more heartbreaking.

Luckily we’ll see these two athletes back on the course in the next little bit!

Who knows what is in store for us at the next Golf Tournament!!

3 Steps to Straighter, Further Driver Shots

Speaking from first hand experience…

I haven’t played a full 18 holes in a minute.

I live in the great state of Idaho currently and while we have plenty of beautiful of golf courses here, we also have plenty of beautiful snow.

So it’s been a while since I’ve heard that beautiful sound of a pure driver shot slamming the ball off the tees.

In honor of me missing out on that sound then I thought we’d get into some tips on hitting drivers both straighter and further.

Just in case it’s been a while since you’ve heard that sound from your own driver…

It’s literally titled Golf ASMR…

Sad to say it was on my “recommends” and that even YouTube’s algorithm knows I’m addicted to this game 😂

So if you want to hear that sound more often, here’s three steps for just that.

Step #1: Check Your Grip. When you grab your club you should be able to see at least two, optimally three, of your lead hands knuckles. A lot of golf coaches I’ve been listening to and reading talk about this point a lot. If you can ensure your club is less on your inner palm and closer to where your fingers connect to your palm you’ll over rotate your wrists less. You’ll know your club is too far in the center of your palm if your forearms are pointed to the sky or you lead with your shaft when coming down from your backswing.

Step #2: Swing straight back. This one might just be the most difficult step to follow because it sounds so simple yet is so difficult to master. Everyone of us thinks we look like Tiger lining up for a straight bomb down the middle when in reality we look like this 👇.

Luckily, we have years of people studying the swings of pros and newbies alike to help us know exactly what makes people do this and how to fix it. If you find yourself struggling with swinging straight back then you’re likely too stiff in your feet. Early last year Paul Wilson Golf made a great video on this if you want to check it out. What Paul recommends is spending time slowly practicing swinging at 50-70% of your normal speed and try to emphasize transferring weight from your front foot to your back foot on the downswing. If you can consistently hit 100+ yards straight with this technique then increasing speed to normal will help engrain that muscle memory.

Step #3: Swing straight forward. Most people over emphasize their hips and don’t focus enough on their core when they swing. They try to rip it like McllRoy but end up shanking it like you’re trying to do a trick shot into the neighbor’s cat. This intense body movement sacrifices speed for accuracy. Be sure you are engaging your core in your swing as opposed to just using your hips. The next time you have time at the gym then, I recommend checking out this video to make sure your “Dad Gut” isn’t the kryptonite to your driver swing.

Tiger Woods on LIV Golf PLUS New clothing line

I feel I need to begin this one with an apology.

I truly try not to always be talking about Tiger Woods.

He is definitely a huge part of the game we love and his impact on the sport can not be understated.

But I also want to be sure I’m not letting what he accomplished overshadow what other players in the sport have done and are doing today.

Case and point, Dustin Johnson literally gave his $400 wedge to a kid in the parking lot after the tournament this last weekend.

I mean that’s just some cool stuff.

So with that off my conscience I can now get into Tiger Woods’ big weekend.

He initially made a big SPLASH with his announcement of his new clothing line Sunday Red.

Something you undoubtedly have been hearing about already.

Though you also heard it from us here at Just The Tips where we made that prediction last year.

Yup.

We’re big time Golf Journalists here.

Basically best buds with Tiger and got invited to design Scottie Scheffler’s new home golf course 💁‍♀️😂

But this is great news for the golf game as it helps players see the opportunities they have themselves.

Hopefully this also helps even advance the gear people like you and me get when it’s designed by golfers for golfers.

On top of Tiger breaking new ground with this announcement he also made another comment about the whole LIV and PGA situation going on.

You see, LIV golf didn’t have as good of a week as the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Of course some are saying the event was more frat party than golf tourney, but for those who replied to Tuesday’s poll you all seemed to enjoy it!

But LIV Golf had a tournament this weekend just a few hundred miles away from Phoenix where "it drew roughly 20,000 fewer viewers than the Kansas State-BYU basketball game”

Now I graduated from BYU and I didn’t even know they were playing this weekend 😂

So this might just be a problem for LIV Golf.

And while they have all the money in the world, Tiger says money isn’t what the PGA needs from them anymore after SSG’s 3 billion dollar investment earlier this year.

What matters most now is that LIV Golf has numerous BIG names that I would love to see go head to head with the rest of the PGA players.

For me, this is all it comes down to.

I want to be able to see whatever matchups would be most interesting as soon as we can.

It’s becoming similar to the world of boxing.

There are too many owners who won’t let the greats compete because they’re not getting a big enough slice of the pie.

5 Steps to Better Short Game Practices

Before we begin this is a really important question,

Do you PRACTICE golf or PLAY golf?

Now I don’t say that to be offensive, honestly.

Some people love just playing a fun 18-holes and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Every golf group needs someone to be in charge of the vibes.

On the other hand, if you really are sick and tired of messing up your shots from the edge of the green then these 5 steps are great to try out the next time you’re practicing your golf swing.

Step #1: Learn to Read Your Divots. If you can lay out 5 balls about 1-2 feet from one another, this’ll really help you to see the effect different strokes have. The first time you do this I recommend you try to really over exaggerate leaning the club forward vs leaning backwards on the first two and then finding the happy medium between them. Allow yourself to see how every thing you’ve learned ACTUALLY affects how much you get underneath the ball. Practicing this will drastically reduce how consistent you can get with each tip you’re focusing on.

Step #2: Don’t Just Loft, Roll. Definitely know I’m speaking to myself just as much as anyone else here on this one, but great short game doesn’t just mean you can get your ball to skyrocket up and stop on a dime. Getting the ball to stop where you want it is just as important. When you’re on the edge of the green this is all the more true. Get comfortable knowing how much your wedges roll and your hybrid chipper if you have one. I even golfed with a guy who would practically sink 20-foot puts with a 3-wood. When you learn how to roll the ball on the greens your putting game rarely becomes an issue.

Step #3: Check Your Clubs. This may seem similar to the last one but it’s not. After all, there’s a BIG difference between hitting a 20-foot shot with a wedge as opposed to trying to hit a 30 or even 40-foot shot. Trying each of those distances with different clubs helps you see just how different each club feels and which one works best for you. You have more than 3-clubs in your bag after all, use them

Step #4: The Lift is in the Hands. Notice I didn’t say “loft”. You can practice the impressive flop shot on your own time, but if you’re trying to find the balance between having lift to your chip shot and not smacking it all the way to the next tee box then it’s likely due to your hands. Having a lighter grip on your hands allows the club face to do more of the work and your swing to have less distance on the ball.

Step #5: Practice Under Pressure. Now, this might just be the most important one. We all know how easy it is to hit in practice. Hitting when you’re on hole 16, and on track to break 90 for the first time, is a whole other thing. So be sure to practice under pressure to. Do this by either making it fun and adding bets with friends on the practice holes or working out before you hit the practice shots so you’re mentally and physically more strained.

You’ve heard it here first.

The game of golf has gone from being the “Game of Kings” to the Game of the Working Class.

Now get ready for the proof.

This last weekend was the Waste Management Phoenix Open and it was a sight to be hold, there even was a guy who streaked across the 16th hole 😂

While this was definitely a disturbance to the game with even some golfers like Zach Johnson claiming he likely wouldn’t be returning next year,

It was still amazing to see the influx of the “working class” in golf showing up to the tournament.

This giant increase in golfers has been amazing for the sport in my opinion.

I seriously love it when new people find this sport and join in our ranks of golf addicts.

(Just as long as they don’t take too long ahead of me and let us play through if they are)

Speaking of giant increases though…

The amount of spectators drinking at this event was like walking around a college during rush week.

Highly recommend checking out some of the videos Barstool Sports took if you like drunk people doing drunk people things 😂

The insane amount of alcohol also showed what a lot of people mainly go to the golf course for which I found funny also.

But, going back to what we were originally talking about, this weekend really showed just how much people love golf even though they’re not the typical “Bougie” clientele the sport is used to.

(Although there is an “Alcohol Secret Origin” to Golf 👀)

Increasing Club Swing in 15 Minutes

Most of today’s tip comes from Long Drive Competitor Seb Twaddell and Rypstick founder Dr. Luke Benoit’s session with Golf Science Lab.

(Out of all the posts I read and videos I watched on the topic they seriously knocked it out of the park)

Work on Hip Flexibility.The least flexible part of most adults is their hips. Which is tragic because that’s one of the most important part of a PGA level golf swing. Before you step up to the greens then be sure to work on them either in the gym or at least while stretching

Go for a fuller swing. When you’re working on your form, you obviously reduce the size of your swing but to increase your actual speed and nail your driver an extra 20-50 yards you’ll need as much momentum behind that ball as possible.

Increase the speed of your backswing. If you’re actually flexible, this is where your advantage really comes in. Going faster on your backswing in a controlled way allows you to treat your hips and back muscles like an elastic band as your wind them back and get ready to rip. (Warning: Doing this will IMMEDIATELY let you know just how inflexible you are 😂)

Keep your wrists relaxed. One of the biggest things people forget when they’re swinging their clubs is that your forearms are a very useful tool. If you really want to stay at the 100 mph+ club head speed, utilizing that extra muscle is one of the only ways to do it.

Try 5 rapid breaths and hold the last one out.This will definitely be the most awkward one to try out and get used to but it’s a well known fact that breathwork drastically improves focus. So the next time you step up to the driving range for practice, see how changing up breathing on your approach helps to prime your body.

Longer and more flexible shafts for your driver. Now I’m not going to say that the “only thing keeping you from being better is a new club”…HOWEVER, the data does show that just increasing your club length 2-3 inches can equate up to an 8 mph increase in club swing.

Callaway’s Stock Drop is TopGolf’s Fault?

Before we get into this I think it’s important I write out a carefully written disclaimer on how this newsletter is not to be taken as financial advice.

So here it is…

Alright with that out of the way,

I’m not sure how much you’ve been following the Callaway stock price this last week…

But in just a few days it has dropped over 20%!

Credit to Google Finance

Now everyone is talking about that 20% drop in the last few days but that can potentially be just fear and day traders fluctuating the price.

You see, on November 8th the Callaway Earnings Call Report reported a net income drop of 23% to $29.7 million for this quarter.

It’s not uncommon for people to read that number alone and jump ship out of fear they’ll lose the money the put in.

(Which drops the stock price even more and causes even more people to pull out)

To put this story in 60 second Synopsis or less though…

TopGolf is responsible for 43.02% of Callaway’s total revenue and is racing to become the “Amazon” of new age golf ranges.

Since 2021, they’ve built or are currently building 33 of the 88 total TopGolf venues.

It remains to be seen if this will be the winning strategy for this form of “golf simulators” as we’ve also talked a ton about the entirely VR golf simulators that have equally been rising in popularity.

3 Steps to Improve Your Irons (For Beginners and Experts)

For all those who are getting ready to jump on some Black Friday Deals coming up at golf courses, the last thing you want to happen is shanking your irons.

This is especially true when you finally splurge on those $300 greens fee courses and you’re surrounded by people both way richer and way better at golf than you…

Not to mention when those shank shots are flying through the air a little too close to those course-side MULTI-Million Dollar Houses.

After reading this though, both those fears are going to be in the past.

Today’s tip comes from PGA Coaches Piers Ward and Andy Proudman which you can watch in full below or keep reading to break down the 3 Steps

Step #1: Keep Your Feet in The Game. One of the biggest mistakes people make is that they lose track of where their feet are pointing. And don’t read this and think I’m giving you the “most obvious tip ever”. Because, while it is the most obvious tip, it is also one of the only things that better swinging and grip can never change.

So before you drop another $100 into lessons or gear, just have someone in your group drop a club at your feet and on your swing path to ensure you’re not making any simple mistakes.

Step #2: Don’t Lose the Thumb War. When a lot of people grab their irons they’re going to have the tendency to grip it like a baseball bat. That tendency is very difficult to break unless you consciously choose to.

The next time you grab your irons then ensure that your:

✅ Lead hand is slightly opened up so you’re showing the center of your glove forward

✅ Keep your thumb just slightly over the center line

AND

❌ Do NOT shift the club in your hands mid swing. If you can’t hold the club the same through your swing then you aren’t gripping it right

Step #3: Flick the Mud Drill. This is one of the greatest drills I think I’ve ever seen to help not only the pacing of a swing but also the grip and swing path to. You can watch the 6 ½ Minute Drill Here but it basically involves flipping the golf club around so you don’t have the counterweight of the head and simply practice the movement of swinging it right to the perfect point in your backswing.

I’m not sure about you, but my instagram is well aware that I love seeing golf content.

I know people always complain about the “algorithms” brainwashing people.

But…

From my point of view I love it when the ambivalent Zuckerberg blesses me with videos like this when I didn’t know it was something I wanted to see 👇

Meanwhile, Zuck is looking at the Senate Building if you are keeping up on his court case 😂.

But hey, we’re here for golf so let’s stay with it.

Now, while this is not an advertisement for the Golf VX company I do highly recommend showing them some love on Instagram.

We all love it when people within the golf community are taking the world of golf to a whole new level.

Best Stretches Before Playing Golf

The reason I wanted to talk about stretching today is actually quite personal…

You see I was at TopGolf with my brothers this week and one of them was as close to throwing out his back while swinging while still being funny as you could be

😂😂😂

It was both incredibly funny and incredibly eye opening for me at the same time.

So I’m going to share my favorite tips for stretches I’ve come across in the hopes you don’t become “that guy” who has to stop playing mid-game because they threw out their back.

Sound good?

Let’s get into it

#1 It’s all in the hips. Taking time to make sure your hips are strong is the key to not making the same mistake my brother made. You see, we get injured often because we overcompensate with “less strong” parts of our bodies. For your hips then I recommend working both on exercises that strengthen your hips or making sure you’re activating your hips mid swing.

#2 Get a Warm-Up Routine. While you might feel like a “try-hard” or “scrub” for warming up before playing a round of 18, PGA players swear by their warm-up routines. Warming up not only works for your body though but your mind to. Just in case you needed any further motivation for not walking out from the parking lot straight to the tee-box.

#3 We are rewarded in public for what we do in private. Taking time to take care of your body off the course is one of the best ways we can make sure it works its best on the course. Trying out different exercises and routines not only before our game but after our game can really help maximize those public rewards.

#4 Keep track of results. In all likelihood, this isn’t the first time you’ve been told about warming up and stretching for golf. If you’re wanting to guarantee this is the final time you promise you take action then be sure to write down your routine and the results it has on your game. I recommend a designated golf journal for this. Keep track of what you can add or remove from your game here.

It turns out Billionaires don’t just buying golf memberships but they also like buying GOLF ORGANIZATIONS

The billionaires over at Strategic Sports Group (SSG) have made a large “investment” in the PGA of…

3 Billion Dollars!!

Personally, I’m not sure where the line between investment and purchase begin.

But, that’s what the story is reported as by Golf.com in their new story on the SSG & PGA Merger.

Attached below is a totally real picture of SSG and PGA after the deal was successful.

If you’re like me and don’t know who the SSG are, then let’s run through a quick list of who is in this Billion Dollar Boys Club:

💰Arthur Blank (billionaire founder of Home Depot and owner of the Atlanta Falcons),

💰Steve Cohen (hedge fund billionaire and owner of the New York Mets),

💰Mark Attanasio (private equity billionaire and owner of the Milwaukee Brewers),

2️⃣ An estimated 200 golfers will become “equity partners” and others will even receive a “five-year player compensation guarantee”

3️⃣ PGA will now be able to pursue further potential discussions with LIV

That last one is probably going to surprise people the most as the merger with LIV (at least so the rumors go) is due to “anti-trust issues”

Maybe that might be an over exaggeration.

Look, obviously you would neverrrr 3-putt.

I mean with how much money you spent last year on that new putter…

You’re putt game is always locking in 2-putts max.

But we all have that “one friend” who occasionally hits a 3-putt or possibly even a 5-putt…

Why Most Fixes Don't Stick

Now, every Tom, Dick, and Harry has a tip for a straighter drive. But they're like Band-Aids on a broken leg. Put It All Together - Now take a full swing. You'll be amazed how much closer that ball lands to your target.

3 Steps Danny Maude Recommends for “Short Hitters”

On this Newsletter we are, almost by accident…

Big fans of Danny Maude.

Now if you don’t know who he is then you obviously don’t search up as many golf tips on YouTube in your free time as I do.

Danny Maude has one of the most popular YouTube channels.

And, it’s been one of my favorite sources of tips to reduce my stroke count with consistency.

His newest one has helped me a lot 👇

Here’s the THREE STEPS in case you don’t watch the video:

#1 Keep Your Shoulders NOT Straight. Now, while this might sound counterproductive it’s not. If you slightly dip your trails shoulder, the one away from the hole, on your your downswing then you’ll do two important things. One, you’ll prevent your swing from coming down on top of the ball. Two, you’ll get more power out of your swing.

#2 Turn INTO Your Trail Leg. What a lot of people mess up on their back swing is they simply lift the club backwards. Instead, you want to ensure your arms aren’t just going back but you’re creating that opening in your legs and hips. Taking time to get in the motion of lifting up your front heel and digging into your back heel is a great way of adding 10 PLUS yards to your driver.

#3 Whip the Towel. This one might not make a whole lot of sense but it’s one of the best techniques you could practice to ensure you’re engaging all parts of your swing. You can click here to watch him explain it but what you’re really trying to do is ensure you’re not just simply rotating through the ball with your hips but using your arms to. If you had a towel in your hands and tried swinging, for example, you want that towel to hit the place your ball would be. This only happens if you’re swinging with your hips AND using your arms as well.

The 20-year old Sophomore at University of Alabama, Nick Dunlap took home not only the gold but played absolutely out of his mind with a 29-under par victory.

He was the first amateur player since Phil Mickelson in 1991 to win a PGA Event.

But…

Since he was an amateur player he is bound by the PGA rules that deny him from taking that $1.5 Million Prize.

Avoid these Mistakes When Chipping on the Green

Don’t hit your wedges like your irons. Now if I were to have you mimic a golf swing with an 8-iron vs a 56-wedge, how different would those two swings be? Hitting with wedges needs to be radically different than your other clubs because you need a radically different result. So be sure you keep that “handle forward and ball back” as Tod Kolb, PGA Player Coach, says.
Don’t fear the roll. A big problem with your ball landing 25 yards from the pin is people freeze up and ruin their shot by trying to land a perfect lob shot next to the hole only to slam the ball even further than their opening drive. Sadly, I am speaking from experience on that one. The next time you find yourself that close to the pin, don’t be afraid to grab that 8-iron and tap the ball 10 yards with enough top spin to roll on home. Though this is something I’d highly recommend practicing BEFORE any big holes.
STOP the “halfswing”. This is something a lot of amateur golfers do. While it does make sense with less distance requiring less swing. It doesn’t let you use the whole club and makes it so you don’t get as much backspin. If you are going for a miraculous, stop-on-a-dime shot then you need to get underneath that ball with the whole club for more lift so it goes just as high, or higher, than it goes far.
Practice getting under the ball, NOT under the grass. Our good friend Rory Maude has a great 10-minute video on this. See, the problem people have with swinging a golf club is they either swing with their arms or with their body more than the other. To counteract this problem, or see if you’re doing this yourself, try swinging with your hands separated on the golf club and watch if you drift forward with one over the other. You’ll get more under the ball than the grass when there’s a balance.

But here’s what Rory envisions the PGA Tour at its full-potential could be 👇

Making the Venues and Golf Courses more at the center of the matches
Adding in other countries like Japan and South Africa and other places with reputable courses
Golf teams more like Cricket’s Indian Premier League, as opposed to LIV Golf’s model

I’m going to break these up into the first two and then explain the last one separately as I feel the first two are more about making the PGA more money.

If there aren’t dollar signs anywhere close to changes to the game then they’re likely not going to happen.Cr

Increasing attention to the courses will increase the money the course owners.

BUT…

Not in the way you’d think 👀

If you’ve ever tried to get a tee time for these top-tier, Masters level courses then you know that you often can’t without having an adequate enough Handicap and sometimes literally have to “know somebody”.

The Old Course at St. Andrews, for example, has already filled up with reservations for the WHOLE YEAR.

So here’s how these courses really make their money; members fees.

These courses make millions from the people with money to pay for them and when they get members with serious star power, those members will stay at that course just so they can say they’re members at the same place Brad Pitt or the Elon Musk goes.

(That’s not to mention the events and banquettes that pay prices just as high to say they were at the place Brad Pitt and Elon Musk goes)

Now, if PGA is going to highlight other courses and have a South Africa Open or Japan Open is another story for the same reason.

The high end courses in other countries often have deals with other golf organizations and so the problem of MONEY has entered the chat once again.

This is especially true with LIV Golf throwing endless amounts of money into the ring.

The PGA, while being the dominant name in the world of golf, has long had contentions with other organizations and even battles within itself as “PGA” has numerous off shoots run by different committees that all have to split up both the cost and the revenue of events.

But this is already becoming long enough of an issue without going into that complex bag of worms so we’ll just jump to the last part.

I know, I know you’re probably thinking,

But here’s the team system Rory is recommending…

Making it private.

Think of watching players like Rory, Viktor Hovland, Jordan Spieth, and Scottie Scheffler announce they’ve teamed up for the year under the banner of the “Spellcheck Thinks Our Last Names are Errors”

(For real, every time I write about either of them this always bugs me lol)

They then would be the collective score against other groups of 4 or possibly even 3.

It’s less like how LIV’s current model simply groups up players and more like Soccer teams.

And this way of playing is something I think would definitely work for increasing viewership.

Everyone of us would be a lot more compelled to watch the next match-up when you’re rooting for a team or when one of its golfers gets into a slump or even a minor injury.

As for if any of these changes would happen is anyone’s guess.

The only predictor of any possible change would be how excited the public gets about seeing these new changes in action.
