In January, we wrote a total of 38 news pieces and four articles.

Welcome to the latest edition of the Threshold Monthly Newsletter, covering the activities of January 2026. While this month hasn't been the busiest, there has still been significant activity within the flight simulator community.

MK Studios released Rome Fiumicino V2 for MSFS 2020/2024, and TFDI launched a major update for its MD-11 for MSFS 2020/2024. Additionally, iniBuilds updated its A340 Airliner for MSFS 2024 to include a VIP variant. FlyTampa also released Las Vegas V3 for MSFS 2024, and iniBuilds debuted Dallas Fort Worth International Airport for MSFS 2024, among other updates.

We hope February brings just as much, if not more, activity. As always, we will keep you updated.

In the final episode of No Money Mondays for January, Anders decided to visit China to explore Kui’s rendition of Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (ZGDY) for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. Message from the Editorial Team

Welcome to the twenty-second newsletter from Threshold!
In December, we wrote a total of 59 news pieces and six articles.

As we enter the early days of 2026, it's time to take a step back and reflect on the events of 2025.

2025 marked a significant step forward in flight simulation, with several big third-party releases and substantial updates to both X-Plane 12 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.

The year was defined by several landmark aircraft releases. iniBuilds’ long-awaited A350 arrived in February to a mixed reception, but consistent post-launch development turned it into one of 2025’s best. That momentum continued with the release of the A340 in October. Fenix also made waves with its “Big Fenix Update” in July, setting a new benchmark for Airbus simulation in MSFS. On the Boeing side, PMDG brought both the 777 and 737-800 into MSFS 2024, with the 737 receiving a deeper, though controversially priced, overhaul.

X-Plane enjoyed a strong year as well. The release of X-Plane 12.2 delivered huge graphical improvements, particularly to clouds, while finally addressing the long-standing dark cockpit issue. Third-party developers kept the momentum going, with FlightFactor pushing the 777 out of beta and releasing new engine and freighter expansions. X-Crafts launched the E-Jets Family v2.0 in March, while ToLiss expanded its A320 family with the release of the CEO addon for their outstanding A320NEO. It was no doubt an eventful year for both X-Plane and MSFS users.

2025 was also an exciting year for Threshold. We published over 600 news stories, 32 instalments of "No Money Mondays," and 30 longer articles and reviews. Additionally, we welcomed some fantastic new team members: Olai, Nicnac, and Roger. Threshold also attended FSWeekend in March and FSExpo in June; both of which we will be returning to in 2026.

Threshold is operated by volunteers in their spare time, and it would not be possible without your support, as well as those who contribute through our Patreon, which we launched this year. On behalf of the entire team, thank you. We look forward to seeing you in 2026!

Top Freeware Of The Month

At the beginning of December, Petar explored JetSet Designs' freeware rendition of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (KCLE) for X-Plane. Located in Cleveland, Ohio, the airport serves over 10 million passengers each year. The scenery package is packed with features such as custom 3D buildings, a modelled terminal interior, custom ground textures, and much more. All of these features provide a great reason to fly to the airport and experience it for yourself. READ MORE

Top Freeware Of The Month

Last month, Anders travelled to the Middle East, specifically to the west coast of Saudi Arabia, to explore the newly released freeware rendition of Red Sea International Airport for X-Plane 12. The airport began operations just two years ago, in 2023. The scenery was created by the new developer, Skydom, which is also currently working on Al Maktoum International Airport and Mykonos Airport. With a variety of features, this scenery is perfect for those looking for new destinations to fly to in the virtual skies. READ MORE

UPDATE - F28 Professional by JustFlight

We are thrilled to announce that the JustFlight F28 Professional has been updated to version V2.2. This latest update includes a range of new features and bug fixes, along with a native model for MSFS 2024. The update is now available and is free for all current owners of the F28.

The new update introduces distinctive cabin branding for all included liveries of the aircraft, as well as pre-flight walk-around support in MSFS 2024. In September, we wrote an incredible total of 79 news pieces and five articles.

October is here, and that means a new instalment of the Threshold Monthly Newsletter! September saw several headline developments, including two significant betas, MSFS 2024’s Sim Update 4, and X-Plane 12.3.0. Perhaps the biggest of all was the official announcement that MSFS 2024 will arrive on PlayStation 5 in December. Additionally, iniBuilds released Cape Town and Leeds Bradford for MSFS 2024, and further previewed its A340-300, with release now “imminent”. Furthermore, FlightFactor’s 777V2 reached public release, ToLiss launched its A320ceo for XP11 and XP12, and Thranda released their F33A Bonanza. VATSIM also announced a pause of Cross the Pond until spring 2026, and Atelic delivered a new Luxembourg scenery for MSFS.

With a month this busy, we look forward to seeing what October brings next, and, as always, we will keep you updated!

A Message from Magnus

This message was first posted on our Patreon, and I thought it would make sense to mention parts of it here in the Newsletter. I will try to get the time to inform a bit about the behind-the-scenes on Patreon for those who are interested.

Hey everyone, I wanted to take a moment to share a bit of what goes on behind the scenes at Threshold, especially for those of you who’ve joined our free tier on Patreon. First off, thank you for being here. Whether you support financially or follow along and read our editorial, it genuinely means a lot.

Here’s the thing. Threshold isn’t a company with offices, investors, or departments. It’s a passion project with big ideas — run by people who care deeply about the flight sim community. Nobody here is doing this to make money. In fact, the only ones who get paid are our writers, and that’s only fair - albeit not enough..

That said, Threshold does need more of my time, and we’re slowly working toward a point where I can dedicate myself fully to it. Every bit of support brings us closer to that goal.

I've also joined these guys this year: Niels and Jannes from FSWeekend. I am also helping to organise the next editions of the best expo in our niche. You should really check that out if you haven't yet! Flightsim Weekend is another thing that doesn't pay but is incredibly fun.

Some of what We’re Working On at Threshold

We’ve got some exciting things in motion, and even more on the horizon:

• Our site migration is well underway and’ll unlock a new world of projects we’ve been planning for years. We’ve got five additions to our editorial space alone — more soon.

• We’d love to return Aerodrome, our open development hub for freeware developers. It started strong, but it needs a proper reboot. If you’re curious, join the Discord.

• Our FlightSim Developer Academy had a soft launch, but it deserves the attention and structure to become something much bigger.

• We want to send our staff to more expos to cover the events and meet you all — the community — in person.

• The forum is due for a revamp, and we have many fixes and ideas for revitalising it.

Some people still think Threshold is a large corporation. The reality is — we’re not struggling, but we’re also not sitting on margins that allow us to grow at the pace we want (or need to). We want to stay competitive, fresh, and ahead — but it takes more than passion to make that sustainable.

So if you’re on the free tier and have been considering supporting us — any paid tier, even $1/month, makes a real difference. It’s not about buying influence, perks, or exclusive content. It’s about helping us build the platform this community deserves.

I’ll keep writing here about our journey. I'd love to hear from you if you have ideas, questions, or want to talk. This isn’t a one-way street.

Welcome to the fifteenth newsletter from Threshold!

A Sort of Travel Log from The FSExpo 2025 by Magnus

This year's FlightSimExpo was a bit different for me. Just four days before departure, I had surgery after breaking my leg. The timing wasn’t ideal, and the journey from Oslo to Boston via Copenhagen was, let’s say, not my most comfortable travel experience. Still, I knew I had to make it.

Thanks to the generous support of Flightpanels, Honeycomb, and MOZA, the trip was possible. Their contributions helped Threshold attend the event and continue doing what we believe: connecting directly with the community and the developers, shaping our space.

I arrived in Boston a couple of days before the Expo kicked off and spent the night there before being picked up by Drew and heading down to Providence. It gave me some time to adjust. Crutches and all, and reflect on why we attend these events in the first place.

For us at Threshold, these gatherings are more than product launches and booths. They’re about people. They’re about conversations that don’t fit in a press release and building relationships that last longer than any one headline. Among all the exhibitors, attendees and others, I could mention many, but I want to highlight Calum from FSElite. I’ve come to respect him sincerely for his work in this community. We’ve developed a very open and friendly relationship over time, where we can talk honestly about our successes and challenges. The image below captures a quick moment from one of my “floor rolls”, where Calum stopped me and asked, “Can we talk about us? And the fact that we’re not enemies?” I found that both sweet and genuinely heartwarming.

Most people don’t see friendships built off the expo floor, over dinners, car rides, and quiet hallway chats. This community is small, but it's built on passion, and that makes it personal.

That sense of connection has taken another unexpected turn this year. I’ve joined Jannes and Niels as part of the FSWeekend organiser team, a development I didn’t see coming, but one that feels like a natural step forward. After years of attending, covering, and supporting the community, being invited into the core team is humbling and exciting.

Representing both Threshold and FSWeekend

Like the relationship between Calum and me, the friendship between the FSExpo team, Evan, the FSWeekend team, and the others, has grown stronger with each event. There’s mutual respect and support between the teams, and it’s a reminder of what this community can be at its best.

We are excited to announce that the newly released BAe 146 Professional for X-Plane 12 is now available. Developed by JustFlight in partnership with Thranda Design, this add-on aims to accurately replicate the four-engine, short-haul regional airliner.

We are super excited to announce the launch of a brand new video series that we are calling: Cold & Dark Startup! Cold and Dark Startup is a tutorial series dedicated to guiding you through aircraft startup procedures across multiple flight simulators. Captain’s Dinner and Flight Sim Awards 2025

Threshold, cruiselevel.de, and FSElite are proud to announce the Flight Sim Awards 2025. Taking place at the Captain’s Dinner the night before FlightSimWeekend 2025, the event is all about honoring the best add-ons for a variety of categories within the flight simulation community.

Although voting for the awards has ended, the winners are based on both votes from the community and the Flight Sim Awards jury, on a 50/50 split.

Dear Threshold Community,

As 2024 draws to a close, we want to take a moment to reflect on an incredible year and share our excitement for what lies ahead in 2025.

This year, our editorial team has been stronger and more dedicated than ever. We’ve published nearly 600 news articles, 34 No Money Mondays, and 25 Reviews, Opinions, and other in-depth articles —a testament to the hard work and passion of our contributors. With steady growth in readership, engagement, and reach, 2024 has solidified Threshold’s position as a cornerstone of the flight simulation community.

Highlights from Flightsim Events

We attended three major events this year. If you ever get the chance to visit one, don’t hesitate to go!

In March, we attended FSWeekend in Lelystad, an event that impressed us with its scale and unique location. June brought FSExpo to Las Vegas—always a highlight of the year. The event was packed with exciting reveals, including Moza’s debut into flight simulation hardware. In 2025, FSExpo heads to Providence, and we’ll be there too! Rounding out the year, FSConference in November surprised us with its intimate atmosphere and focus on networking—a real gem of an event for those involved in the industry.

A Message from the Team

I (Magnus Lorvik, CEO) want to put a huge spotlight on the team this year! 2024 turned out to be the year when Threshold finally got "back on track" after the challenges brought by the pandemic, which forced us to say goodbye to many talented writers as they returned to their daily lives.

We’ve kept the editorial alive through the efforts of several individuals, but to be sustainable, we needed a solid team—and this year, we built one!

I’ve even started writing more myself, which has been a fun and rewarding experience. I plan to stay closely involved with the Editorial team and our team leaders moving forward. This is fun!

In December, Petar visited the freeware rendition of Hiroshima Airport created by KAZE. The airport opened in 1993 and has undergone various expansions and upgrades since then. Today, it serves over 2.6 million passengers annually, accommodating approximately 23,000 aircraft operations. NEW - RJ Professional by JustFlight

We are proud to present the latest addition to our store, the RJ Professional by JustFlight!

The RJ was developed in the 1980s and 1990s and first took to the air in 1992. The main goal of the RJ was to succeed the BAe 146 regional jets, many of which were still flying in their original analogue cockpit configurations and without sophisticated autopilot or navigation systems. This, along with newer and more modern regional jets from other manufacturers, meant that it was beginning to prove difficult for airlines to operate the 146 in the modern-day aviation environment and a new aircraft was required. The results of those efforts was the RJ, a glass cockpit airliner equipped with an EFIS (Electronic Flight Instrument System), PED (Primary Engine Display), FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) and FMS (Flight Management System) - a generational leap in capability from the BAe 146.

Amongst all of these more advanced features, the RJ and the 146 both share the same type rating; there are, therefore, a lot of similarities in the operating philosophies between the two aircraft. A true mix of retro and modern and a really quirky aircraft to study and to fly! The RJ Professional brings you all three variants of the RJ family: the RJ70, RJ85 and RJ100. Each variant is fully custom-coded and created using comprehensive, hands-on research with a real world aircraft, RJ-100 SE-RJI. Over 25 high quality liveries represent the vast number of RJ operators from all around the world.
