Joseph Mavericks asked Chat GPT to devise a plan for a 28 old to go from making $5K monthly to becoming a millionaire.

It came back to say one option is the stock market; for example, if you'd invested $5K in Tesla in 2011...it would now be worth $579,355.

But that relies on luck and risk, so another option is to create your own business which has no earning limits.

Here are the steps ChatGPT suggested to follow:

(1) Identify what you're good at and enjoy doing. Business requires passion over a long period.

(2) Research the market to see if there is a demand for your product or service

(3) Start small - begin your business as a side hustle while working full-time. That way you can fund any startup costs.

(4) Develop a business plan to outline your target audience, offers and revenue model.

(5) Leverage technology, AI and use online platforms to market your business and engage with potential customers.

(6) Reinvest profits to fuel growth. Don’t be tempted to slow down after you make some money - it’s time to scale!

(7) Create a business with the option and vision of one day selling it. A 100K a year profit business could potentially sell for 15x as much

Copywriting has been in a sense blown out of the water in early 2023, and it seemed like a saturated market, but at this point, it’s not.

Copywriting is something every business and individual needs.

Busy business owners don’t have time to call their loved ones at times, what makes you think they have the time to write long emails or informative sections of their website, or even social media captions?

Exactly our point, being a copywriter doesn’t always mean being the best copywriter to dominate the market and make money, but rather being a reliable writer who can continuously do the work.

Detailing is a great side hustle as it is recession-proof, as people always want their cars washed, and especially wealthy people always want their luxury vehicles detailed no matter the circumstance.

There’s More to Clean Than What Meets the Eye

Sure many people might like a clean driveway or a clean house that is rid of all the organic growth that can accumulate on them, but that’s not what you should go for when pressure washing.

See having all that organic growth gone from a house and its driveway makes it look newer and nicer, making it more desirable.

More desirable homes mean they will sell for more when listed on the market.

Pressure washing a home is shown to bring the appraised price up by nearly $10,000, which is a significant amount of money.

Think about what a seller would tell you when you offer to wash their house and driveway for $2,000, and it could add an extra $10,000 to their house’s worth.

Let’s get into our today’s awesome story!

For many, Donald Trump is the north star.

He just got elected to be the 47 USA President.

It makes sense. The guy is one of the most well-known leader:

• Successful businessman

• Famous personality

• Bold—he's unafraid and goes after big challenges

He's done great... but I'd never want to be him. His personal life is complex, he faces constant controversies, and he lives a high-stress life.

"One man's heaven is another man's hell."—some wise monk, probably.

So it begs the question, who do I actually admire? Whose life and career do I look at and say, "Gimme one of those"?

It's never an exact copy you want, but a useful guide.

For me, I admire creative polymaths. For example, Leonardo da Vinci:

• As an artist, he painted masterpieces like the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.

• As a scientist, he studied anatomy, astronomy, and geology.

• As an inventor, he conceptualized flying machines, armored vehicles, and hydraulic pumps.

• As an engineer, he designed bridges and fortifications.

• As a writer, he kept extensive journals filled with ideas, sketches, and observations.

Art, science, invention, engineering, writing... what a legend.

Another modern example is Maya Angelou:

• She was a poet and author of several autobiographies.

• She was a civil rights activist, working with Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.

• She was a singer and dancer, performing in clubs and on stage.

• She was a journalist in Egypt and Ghana during the decolonization of Africa.

• She was a professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University.

Writing, activism, performance, journalism, education... an extraordinary life.

Why do I love these careers so much? I think it's because a part of me feels like life is short—that the world is vast, and I want to experience as much of it as possible before time runs out.

Scott Adams (creator of Dilbert) once said: "If you want to be successful, find out what the price is and then pay it."

Looking at my examples, here's what I wrote down for the "price I need to pay":

I need to...

• Reinvent myself and not be afraid to start from scratch (beginner's mind)

• Become a very quick learner

• Be unafraid to do things that I'm clueless about

• Be willing to change my career label, friend circle, and habits every few years

These all sound fun. It sounds like me, or at least what I want to be like.

When Fitness Meets Tech

Tom Zaragoza, a passionate coder with a knack for problem-solving, found his next big project inspiration through a simple family chat.

His cousin, a gym owner, struggled to find new members and asked Tom: "Could tech make this easier?"

The vision soon became clear: Gymlisted would be a platform bridging people seeking a gym with private, local options.

And it would be more than a listing site. People could use the portal to manage and purchase memberships online, directly on Gymlisted.

Gymlisted would then take a small cut of each transaction. The perfect passive income business model on paper.

So Tom got to work…

Not Just Another Side Project

With a knack for coding and an entrepreneurial mindset, Gymlisted was Tom's dream side project.

He worked on it during evenings and weekends alongside his full-time developer job.

This was going to change his life and revolutionize the industry 🏋🏽‍♀️

Features were extensive, from user-friendly search functionalities Stripe-integrated payment gateways, to rich gym profiles.

He was making gym memberships as easy as online shopping. After all, people hate all the hoops they have to jump through to cancel. This way, it would be as easy as a click of a button.

However, he has made huge assumptions without validation, a dangerous ploy for any business…

Marketing Strategies

Ambition in Overdrive

Once the site was built, Tom needed to spread the word.

Tom onboarded an old high-school friend to help him do the marketing.

He needed to get the attention of two audiences. People looking for a gym and people who owned/managed a gym.

Tom had three main strategies to attract both.

1) Cold Emailing. They pitched their ideas to gym owners via cold email, probably the most scalable and accessible outreach method. They got a few responses and generated interest.

2) Social Media. They sought out customers on social media i.e. people searching for "where to find a gym?" and "find gyms in..." Then they would respond and re-direct them to Gymlisted

3) Offering a complimentary service for free. In addition to the cold emailing and direct outreach, Tom offered to take premium photos and videos of the gym.

These are all great strategies.

We especially like the third one because once the gym has the images, they need somewhere to post them. That's when Gymlisted offers its fancy profile and lead generation services to solve that nice, new problem 🤝

Once they had gym owners and people looking for gyms onboard, here’s how they planned to make a profit…

Revenue Models and First Hurdles

Gymlisted's revenue model was simple yet effective.

For every successful transaction between the gym and the user for memberships, Gymlisted would take a slice.

It's kind of like how a credit card company does.

His 'bank transaction' model seemed foolproof.

Yet, at this point, with zero revenue and escalating costs from server maintenance to marketing investments, the financial landscape grew rocky.

And Tom soon realized his fatal error…

He suddenly asked himself, “Wait, does anyone actually want this?”

Wrong Turn

Facing the Giants and Why Gymlisted Failed

Gymlisted's biggest problem quickly became clear.

Not enough gyms wanted it 🥶.

Even with the digital age upon us, many private gyms have a certain way of doing things. Especially when it comes to their crucial income stream, memberships. There’s a reason why they don’t make it easy to cancel because it would make their business unsustainable.

And when they peeked at their competitors already doing this, they found giants. Some had been in the game for years, even getting publicly traded. For newbie Gymlisted, fighting for a spot against them was tough.

Tom tried switching gears – making Gymlisted a spot for personal trainers. But by then, his enthusiasm was low, and the passion dimmed.

Tom accepted the harsh truth and ended the venture without wasting any more capital.

Lessons, Reflections, and the Road Ahead

While Gymlisted may not have achieved its intended glory, its journey offered invaluable lessons:

1. Market Research is King: Understanding real market needs trumps assumptions. Every business needs a demand to succeed. If you want to create that demand, you will need a bigger budget.

1. Know Your Competition: Knowing the big players in your sector can shape your strategy. Competition is good, but you should know about it before you implement it so that you can bring something different.

Yet, was Gymlisted truly a misadventure? In its essence, the idea held potential. Perhaps it was before its time, or maybe the market nuances were more intricate than anticipated.

Exploring Lower-Risk Alternatives

Playing devil’s advocate, here's what Tom could have done instead of using his high-value coding skill. These might have been more risk-free alternatives that wouldn’t require a ton of work upfront:

(1) Custom Digital Solutions: Tom could've built bespoke digital tools tailored to individual business needs, offering a more personalized touch.

(2) SaaS for Gyms: Tom could've created software to help gyms operate more efficiently instead of just connecting people to gyms.

(3) Gym-Centric CRM Systems: A dedicated system to help gyms manage client relationships, keeping members engaged and loyal.

(4) Online Modules: Tom could've crafted digital courses teaching gyms about online marketing and customer service, sharing his expertise.

(5) Digital Consultancy: As a digital guide, Tom could've assisted gyms in enhancing their online presence and customer engagement.

In summary,

Even though Gymlisted faced its fair share of hurdles, there's a lot we can learn from Tom's journey.

This week we’ll be diving into the way to start a business online in just a weekend. This includes how to learn a skill, build a following, and monetize your skill all on your own with as little as a phone and a Wi-Fi connection.

How it Pick a Skill

What Skills are Monetizable?

Funny you ask, this one isn’t a hard pick.

In reality, everything is monetizable, it just depends on what market you put it in, how long you stick with it, and if you can position it right.

BUT some things are better than others.

For example, copywriting, digital marketing, and short-form content editing are all skills that nearly every online and physical business needs.

Some examples of skills you should stay away from are things like hobbies you have that you excel in, or things people don’t take seriously.

Say you’re really good at pitching in baseball.

That’s a good skill, but to monetize it would be coaching by the hour, or selling a coaching program, or charging per physical appointment, and that’s not what you want.

Another point is that once you reach a certain point, you can’t scale something like that, to an extent.

We aren’t saying you can’t, it’s just not as easy and doable with coaching baseball as it is with other skills.

The best way to find a monetizable skill is to look at three things:

1. Need: Do people need what you excel in? If your skill is something people need, then there is a market for it. It’s hard to sell something in a store without customers.

2. Profit: The best way, by far, to make money yourself is to make others more money in the process. Take digital marketing for example. If you can step into a company with digital marketing knowledge and sell more of their products with that skill, you’re making them more money, and yourself money as well

3. Fit: You’ll never succeed with something you can’t stand. If you’re working for clients or trying to learn a skill you don’t care for and don’t enjoy, you’ll quit. If you don’t remember our last newsletter, quitting is the #1 reason why businesses don’t succeed.

How do I Learn That Skill Quickly?

With the amount of information on the internet today learning a skill isn’t the problem, it’s the least of your worries.

Find videos on YouTube and creators on social media who own and run businesses that use the skill you want to learn and learn from them, plain and simple.

An easy example is this YouTube video:

It’s a breakdown of how someone scaled a store on Shopify to do over half a million in sales in 4 months.

In that video, you’ll find different strategies and tactics to use to grow and scale an eCommerce brand, if that’s the route you decide.

Take notes on videos like these and highlight key techniques that’ll help you learn this skill.

With this strategy, you can learn a skill in a weekend easily. We aren’t saying you’ll be a master, but you’ll be proficient enough to offer these services to small brands and creators that might need your service if it fits.

Apply the Skill

How do I Actually Make the Money?

Don’t think about the money.

Plain and simple as that.

If you’ve ever heard the saying: “The person who loves the journey will go farther than the person who only wants the result”

That’s exactly the case here. Make a social media account on one platform, post about your journey learning your skill, reach out to brands and creators who could use your skill, and stick with it.

If you fall in love with progressing and learning your skill and learning to sign clients you’ll have no problem making money and monetizing your skill.

On the flip side, if you worry about the money and a month later haven’t made any, it’s going to be too easy for you to quit and move on back to your previous life or previous route.

Now before we finish off, there’s a reason we don’t give you an exact blueprint for everything.

You have to find what works for you, as everyone is different, and if we give you an exact blueprint for digital marketing, it won’t work for everyone.
