🚀 Are OpenAI's New Image Enhancements As Groundbreaking as Everyone Says?

Let's start with the image above, created with Midjourney. OpenAI's image generator couldn't give me anything near what I wanted after several attempts, and then stopped working.

 🙃 OpenAI has recently enhanced ChatGPT's image generation capabilities by integrating the GPT-4o model, a natively multimodal system capable of processing text, images, and audio.

The Direction

This integration allows ChatGPT to generate high-quality, photorealistic images directly within the chat interface. ​

Improvements

One notable improvement is GPT-4o's ability to accurately render text within images, a challenging task for previous models like DALL-E. You can now create images containing precise textual elements, enhancing utility. ​

Additionally, GPT-4o supports inpainting, enabling you to edit existing images by adding or removing elements with text prompts. This feature allows seamless image modifications, such as altering backgrounds or inserting new objects, directly through conversational interactions. ​

I tried the watch test to see if OpenAI could break previous barriers by creating something new. Try this test with other AI image generators. Every image generator will show wristwatch hands at around 10:10. Typical images of watches on the internet have the hands around this time.

As you can see, ChatGPT did a poor job of developing a stunning display of product photography, and the time was supposed to be 8:45.

These advanced image generation features were available exclusively to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers; however, as of March 31, 2025, OpenAI has extended access to all users, including those on the free tier, with certain usage limitations. ​

The Motive:

I've been testing the tool over the past few days, and here are some initial thoughts:

Strengths:

It excels at generating text within images, photorealism, the inpainting feature worked out well, and the conversational interface for text-prompts allowed for tweaks and reworks. Although sometimes it felt a little long-winded.

Weaknesses

Image generation is currently slower than other models. I miss the ability to generate multiple images at once. While it can produce photorealistic results, consistency is hit or miss. Overall, other image generators still offer a broader creative range.

While many praise it as revolutionary, I find its guardrails limiting, and its capabilities now feel more on par with the competition.

This follows a familiar pattern in the AI world: a new tool launches, everyone hails it as the next big thing, and once the hype fades, we return to the tools that actually meet our long-term needs.

I don't think so. AI developers should be trying to figure out the brakes before they stomp on the AI gas.

Summary:

Jobs on the Decline

There could be a 40% decline in jobs between here and 2030 in sectors such as food services, production work, office support, customer service, and sales.

These careers will be largely impacted due to automation, advances in fintech, and less need for human-to-human communication.

Stalled Occupations that Do not See a Significant Impact

Careers that will not see a significant change between 2025 and 2030 could include construction, creatives and arts management, property maintenance, mechanical installation and repair, agriculture, education and workforce training, and community services.

Careers in this sector could see some changes, but most changes are not predicted to offset the total job numbers.

Job Sectors Expected to Rise

The report forecasts showed significant increases in careers in these areas. This includes careers in health, STEM professionals, managers, transportation, and business and legal services.

The greatest increase with a positive influence will be in professions across research, the healthcare industry, robotics, and computer science in regards to AI.

After going over several different future job reports, correlations begin to appear between them. Skilled trades and hands-on careers will most likely see little changes. Healthcare goes up across the board due to the aging population.

Careers in the tech industry are a mixed bag, with Computer Programmers seeing a massive decline, yet professions in machine learning and servicing are set to see growth.

The report did not include any future projects of humanoids entering the workforce, but that could be more impactful after 2030.

He starts off by noting that before the popularity of AI began, all we've had is real intelligence, and if we create AGI, we're going to feel even dumber.

The big question has been asked since developing AI towards AGI. If we create something superior and smarter than us, should we even do it?

We keep acting like AGI will serve our interests and go about as a servant to our text prompts and verbal demands, but if AI is like a child at the moment, it's going to hit those teenage years and blast into AGI adulthood.

If you're clever enough to go out and do your own thing, you typically do that. Leaders in the industry talk about guardrails and safe AI precautions, but AI has been found to lie and mislead users, and that is in its current state.

The Motive:

For the part, "We're dumb enough to need it." Dumb might not be the right word, possibly lazy, and many AI influencers like to throw in the word productivity. I certainly do.

At what point do we rely so heavily on AI that the dumbing down of society begins to rot from within? Many believe this is already happening, but I like to think we keep getting smarter.

Cons: The price... wow, the price is bad. A current subscription for full usage and features will run you $200 a month for clips with 1080p and 20s duration on an OpenAI pro plan.
A ChatGPT plus plan will get you a max of 50 videos at 480p and 5s duration length.

Sora also suffers severely from prompt adherence and video permanence. Plus, don't even bother creating videos with people or animals expecting it to replace the real thing.

The Motive:

Is Sora better than the competition and worth the price? Short answer: Nope!

There are a lot of features that make it stand out, and it does have the ability to create stunning content. But, the price is a factor, and text-to-video is still a long way from creating realistic videos of people and animals that follow the laws of physics.

Who is it for? If you work for a business that will flip the monthly bill, then go for it. If not, then I recommend RunwayAI or Dream Machine by Luma Labs.

The rollout of Apple intelligence features has been relatively slow, and some features are still in beta testing.

Summary:

Requirements: You will need an iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, or any iPhone 16 model to utilize Apple Intelligence. The integrated AI features need a little extra juice from Apple's newest chip, and Apple users will be using the ChatGPT-4o model.

Why is there a partnership between these two?

Apple has been diving into AI for quite some time now, but Apple intelligence is better suited for basic AI use cases, so in comes OpenAI. When Siri is asked a question or performs a task beyond Apple's capabilities, ChatGPT takes over.

Safe Guards: Apple states there are built-in privacy protections so OpenAI will not store your information, and you will be asked to give permission each time ChatGPT kicks in.

Apple users don’t need an OpenAI account to use the ChatGPT integration, but you can pay for upgraded versions of ChatGPT through the Apple Store.

Apple Intelligence updates also include Image Playground, Genmoji, Writing Tools enhancements, and Visual Intelligence.

The Motive:

MusicFX offers a lot of cool features and it's completely free. There are better programs out there, but usually, there is a price attached.

I tried to create 70s clips that looped to create a continuous soft piano in the style of Eric Satie or Frederic Chopin. It would not copy other artists' styles but did a decent job at a Mozart symphony.

I also could not incorporate signing into any of the tracks, so keep that in mind.

The AI did well at creating a calm Lofi cyberpunk-style beat that looped well and sounded great. Just don't expect it to recreate content that mimics other artists.

 🧑‍🎨 I use Midjourney almost daily, and so do many other AI enthusiasts. Midjourney premiered as the #1 AI image generator locked in a discord a few years back and required a little prompt knowledge to produce results relative to your imagination.

Then came the onslaught of competition, and the devs at Midjourney made some major changes from a web platform, a new standalone editor, more fine-tuned control, and improvements to the editor's capabilities.

Web Platform Accessibility: Allows users to generate images on the website without a Discord account, overcoming a major hurdle for infrequent users or people who don't want to use Discord to enhance their creative process.

The Motive:

I experiment with AI image generators all the time, and I still keep coming back to Midjourney. This could be because I'm very familiar with the program. But after testing many others, if I have a mental picture of what I want, Midjourney does the best at capturing that mental image or showing me various art styles, specific artistic styles, and character references to enhance creativity.

Now with features to import external images for editing my images, this is another great add-on and self-contained tool. I will continue to use Midjourney until something better pulls me away, but I have yet to test a tool in which I cancel my subscription.
