⛳ This Guy Builds Any Course for Your Sim

Ever dreamed of playing your hometown course—or the one where you nailed your first hole-in-one—on your sim? Meet Kent, better known as the Lidar King. He’s turned that dream into reality for hundreds of golfers, designing over 600 ultra-accurate virtual courses for TGC and GSPro using high-resolution Lidar data (think laser-mapped replicas of the Earth’s surface). We caught up with Kent to dig into how he brings these digital fairways to life—and how you can request your own.

How did you get into designing courses for TGC? Was there a particular moment or project that kicked things off?

March 2020. I designed courses for the community for free for years.  Someone approached me that they wanted to have their course built. I told them my queue is too big at the moment to build his.  He then I mentioned that he would be willing to pay for the course.

The rest is history.  600 Courses and counting as of today.

Do you remember the first course you ever built? What was it like looking back on it now?

I built the course I play all the time and was blown away by the accuracy of the lidar.   Sim play was exactly what the course plays like in real life.

You create custom courses—how does that process usually start?

Customer will pick out a piece of land.  I downloaded the lidar data for that area.  I then check to see where we can build holes on that piece of land.  If the customer already has it laid out, I will clean up the lidar to ensure that holes are playable.   We will edit the course together to ensure that course is how the customer  expects it to play.

What are the biggest challenges when trying to accurately replicate a real-world course in TGC?

The biggest issue is when the lidar is old and the customer is looking for new golf features that have been changed since the year of the lidar.  This requires me to manually dig and alter the lidar to put those new bunkers in or whatever has changed.  This of course will cost more to get the new features in the course.

Out of all your custom builds, is there one that stands out as your favorite or most rewarding?

Wilshire Country Club in Los Angeles.  The customer requested stuff that was not on the actual course, like special tee boxes. The number of hours spent on that course was incredible, but the customer and I were ecstatic. 

What’s your dream course to recreate?

I am currently working on a complex of courses—Saucon Valley Country Club in Pennsylvania.  The complex is three 18-hole courses.  All three courses are gorgeous in real life and I am in the process of completing these. The Women’s Open was hosted there several years ago! 

Where can people follow your work?

GSPro will be advertised on my site soon.  I need to publish five customer courses to the main GSPro servers to become "Certified". I have three up there now! 🙂

What inspired you to install a golf simulator?

I’ve always wanted a golf simulator, and having a young son without much outside help watching him (other than my wife) makes long 4-6 hour rounds hard on us. I can set it up and get a round in during nap time.

Why did you choose your specific location? 

I picked my garage for my setup, because it was the only space with tall enough ceilings and wanted a retractable setup so we can still park our cars. 

For those on a tight budget, where do you think it's most important to invest in a golf sim setup?

In terms of where to invest, I’d say don’t cheap out on the mat, you body and joints will thank you. I actually use synthetic turf I made into inserts for shots out of the rough.

If money was limitless, what’s the first thing you’d upgrade?

If I had endless amounts of money to invest…Everyone wants a permanent room with a bar and seating. Hell, I’d add one of those moving floors too—why not?

⚠️ What to Watch For 

Oakmont doesn’t play nice—even in pixel form. Here’s what to keep in mind:

• Lightning-fast greens: Oakmont’s greens are infamous. On a sim, they’re usually set to “tour” or “championship” speed by default. That means uphill putts still roll out, and lag putting is key. 

• Church pew bunkers: Those iconic, deep, narrow bunkers on holes like 3 and 4 are no joke.

• Tight Fairways & Penal Rough: Oakmont’s fairways are narrow and often sloped. Miss them, and you're in thick stuff. Use a 3W or hybrid if your driver dispersion is wide.

Want a golf simulator but short on space?

That’s the challenge u/PastAd1087 faced when they moved into a new home. Instead of ditching their dreams, they turned to their backyard—and built a setup that’s more of a par-tee than a pure practice sesh. We chatted with them about their DIY backyard golf sim and how it’s become the go-to hangout for everything from sim sessions with buddies to movie nights with the family. They’ve created the ultimate golf hangout—and they’re walking you through how to build your own backyard setup.

1. What inspired you to install a golf simulator, and why did you choose your specific location (garage, basement, spare room, etc.)?

I had a golf simulator at my old house and knew I wanted one when we moved. We planned on getting a house with space for a golf simulator, but it was during COVID, and just winning a bid was hard enough. We found the perfect house—minus the space for a golf sim—so we decided we’d make space for one in the backyard!

2. Walk us through your decision-making process—what factors influenced your choices for the enclosure, launch monitor, software, and other components?

The enclosure is temporary. I plan on going with a screen and a 4K laser projector since it's sealed to prevent dust and humidity, making it better for outdoor use. I used to have a Mevo+, and it was awful for putting and short chips—that’s the main reason I went with the Uneekor Eye Mini.

3. What was the most difficult part of setting up your sim, and how did you solve it?

The most difficult part was learning how to build the structure. I spent around 60 hours just watching construction videos, figuring out the best way to make a structure that would hold up to derechos as well as the weight of winter snow.

4. Where did you spend the most money in your setup, and do you think it was worth it?

The structure and patio were around $5K, the Uneekor Eye Mini was $3,500, and the PC was $3,200. I spent a lot of time researching each item to make sure it was right for me, so it was all worth it in the end.

5. For those on a tight budget, where do you think it's most important to invest in a golf sim setup?

The most important investment is the launch monitor. If it doesn’t work as you expect, it makes for a bad experience and defeats the point of golf at home.

6. If money was limitless, what’s the first thing you’d upgrade?

If money was limitless, I’d add a building with AC and heat. Then, I’d get an overhead launch monitor with an adjustable platform that lifts to match the terrain.

7. If you could go back and do it again, what would you do differently?

If I could go back, I’d probably get a projector and screen from the start, but money was a factor, and starting sooner made more sense at the time.

8. What’s your favorite part of your setup, and why?

I love my setup because I built the structure! It’s also a great multipurpose space—we can watch golf while we play, watch movies by the fire, and friends can hang out and play on the porch. It’s the best of both worlds: it’s not claustrophobic, since it’s outdoors, but it’s still protected from the rain and sun.

After reading this week’s sim setup feature, you’re probably itching to pull the trigger on an enclosure and start playing in the backyard. Not so fast—let’s make sure you’re ready to play rain or shine. Here are our top tips for weather-proofing your sim so you can actually golf all year round:

1. Location, Location, Location 

If you have a garage, shed, or covered patio that can accommodate a sim, you’ll have a lot less to manage when it comes to the elements. Make sure your setup is covered to protect against rain, and consider space heaters or fans so you can swing without shivering or sweating.

2. Keep it Covered

If a garage or shed setup isn’t in the cards, make sure you don’t leave your hitting mat, enclosure, or screen exposed to the elements. A tarp works in a pinch, but this Redditor went the extra mile by securing theirs with nails and adding a sloped wooden frame to prevent water from pooling. Thanks u/baicc for this pro tip! 

3. Know Your Tech Limits

🏌️‍♂️Data Talks on the Tee: Launch Monitor Practice

The weather’s heating up, and chances are, you’re swapping the sim for the driving range. But just because you’re outside doesn’t mean you should ditch the data. Bring your launch monitor along—and let the numbers do the coaching.

Here are two driving range drills designed to help you turn swing thoughts into measurable progress.

Drill #1: Shirt Buttons & Belt Buckle — Add Driver Distance

Club: Driver
Setting: Driving Range + Launch Monitor
Frequency: 25–50 balls weekly

The Goal: Learn to generate effortless power by syncing your body rotation—then use your launch monitor to track if it’s actually working.

The Drill:

• Take practice swings focused only on rotating your shirt buttons and belt buckle together. Keep your backswing short, feet flat, and head steady.

• Hit 25–50 balls with that same controlled, connected swing.

Use Your Launch Monitor To:

• Track carry distance vs. swing effort. If your carry is within 5–10 yards of your full swing average, you’re creating power efficiently.

• Watch clubhead speed and smash factor. Look for increases in smash factor (1.48+ is a great goal), even if your swing speed doesn’t spike.

• Monitor side spin. Slices = shirt buttons outracing your hips. Hooks = hips rotating faster than upper body. Use spin numbers to spot these imbalances.

Over time, layer in a slightly fuller backswing—but only if your efficiency metrics (smash factor, ball speed, side spin) stay tight.

Drill #2: Ball Position & Setup — Optimize Your Hybrids

Clubs: 2–5 Hybrids
Setting: Driving Range + Launch Monitor
Frequency: 15 balls per club weekly

The Goal: Find your ideal ball position for each hybrid and use your launch monitor to confirm better contact and consistency.

The Drill:

• Use alignment sticks or markers to test a few ball positions—from center stance to just inside your front foot.

• Hit 15 shots per hybrid, keeping everything else consistent.

Use Your Launch Monitor To:

• Monitor launch angle. You’re aiming for ~12–18°—too low = ball back; too high = ball too far forward.

• Check spin rate. Around 4,000–5,500 RPM is ideal for most hybrids. Low spin = topped shots; high spin = weak flight.

• Compare carry distance. Your best ball position should give you high launch and consistent carry without sacrificing accuracy.

Once you find that sweet spot, take a photo for future sessions.

⛳ Sim Spotlight: The Sim “Par”-gola

This week, we’re featuring a creative golfer who turned a Black Friday deal and some DIY ingenuity into a full-fledged golf simulator—on a budget. From hand-pressed grommets to pergola hacks, here’s how they pulled it off.

What inspired you to install a golf simulator, and why did you choose your specific location?
I wanted to improve my golf swing, so I started with a golf cage net, a hitting mat, and foam practice balls while watching a lot of golf tip videos. After seeing some impressive budget sim builds on YouTube—especially from the Build by Maz channel—I decided to build one myself.

Walk us through your decision-making process. What influenced your choices for the enclosure, launch monitor, software, and other components?
I was looking for launch monitors under $1,000, like the Rapsodo MLM/MLM2Pro and Garmin R10. I ended up buying the Garmin during a Black Friday sale and saved $100. It also has more affordable subscription options. I’m still deciding between the Garmin Golf app and Awesome Golf for software.

What was the most difficult part of setting up your sim, and how did you solve it?
I used waterproof marine awning fabric to cover the enclosure frame and foam paddings. Pressing the grommets into the thick material was tough—I often had to go back and press the same hole twice to get it just right.

Where did you spend the most money in your setup, and was it worth it?
The biggest expense was building the pergola. I already had a projector, so I spent $581 on the Toja Grid 4x4 pergola kit. It was worth every penny—it saved me a lot of time on the build.

If you could go back and do it again, what would you do differently?
I’d make the enclosure and impact screen wider.

What’s your favorite part of your setup, and why?
I’ve got a decent-looking, fully functional golf simulator for just $2,500.

A look back at the drivers that defined Rory’s career—from his first pro swings to his biggest wins.

Titleist 907D2 (2007–2008)

Rory’s professional journey began with the Titleist 907D2 driver, a 460cc club known for its high launch and low spin. Its unique triangular shape stood out, and it helped Rory showcase his explosive distance early in his European Tour career—even before he became a household name.

⛳ Can ChatGPT design your sim room?

Finding all the right components for your sim is one thing. But visualizing how your dream setup will all come together? Now that’s rough. So, we tried our hand at using ChatGPT’s new image generation capabilities to see how well it could turn a simple shed into a golf haven. The results? Not bad.

Step 1: Make a Moodboard

• Pick the products you want to try out for size in your sim space. 

• Organize those products into a rough set up in Canva. Place items in proximity to each other and give a sense of general scale. This will better inform ChatGPT on how to construct the overall image. It will also help avoid any crazy scale issues, like having an impact screen-sized launch monitor.

Step 2: Use Our Prompt

Upload an image of your space and your moodboard. Then, customize the prompt below to speak to your space and setup choices.

“Create a photorealistic golf simulator room based on the moodboard provided. Use the additional reference image to match the layout, proportions, and structure of the room where the simulator should be built. The setup should be realistically scaled and include the following products:

Golf Mat:

Enclosure/Screen:

Projector:

Launch Monitor:

The results? Not too bad! Sure the projector faces the wrong way, and I’m not quite sure what that launch monitor is, but hey, not a bad way to spend 30 minutes.

⛳ Can you put a golf sim in an apartment?

While you might’ve said a resounding “no,” we caught up with Dan, a sim golfer living in a 2 bedroom apartment in Dubai, who made it happen. If you’re willing to sacrifice some space (and don’t have a golf-hating partner or roommate), you might just be able to turn your home golf dreams into reality. With a little creativity, elbow grease, and total devotion to the game, Dan built a golf sim in his apartment. We chatted with him to learn how he pulled it off.

Walk us through your decision-making process—what factors influenced your choices for the enclosure, launch monitor, software, and other components?

I measured the available space, and discovered I could have a 7ft x 7ft x 7ft enclosure in my living room. After much hunting, I found a sim enclosure on Amazon that fit the space perfectly.I bought the projector screen and tarpaulin separately, then had a curtain maker sew them to the right size. I also picked up eyelets and a punch to finish off the top, back, and side panels myself.

For the floor, I used interlocking gym mats and added fake grass—both to give the sim a green look and to keep things quiet for the neighbors below. After researching a few launch monitors, I found I had enough space to use a FlightScope Mevo+.

What was the most difficult part of setting up your sim, and how did you solve it?

Storing the sim when it’s disassembled was a bit of a challenge. But the poles slide neatly under the couch, and I added a new cupboard tucked around the corner to store the panels, grass, and mats—all hidden away when not in use.

Where did you spend the most money in your setup, and do you think it was worth it?

The FlightScope Mevo+ was the most costly part at around $3,400. Was it worth it? Yes, but I guess it depends on the individual’s financial circumstances.

For those on a tight budget, where do you think it’s most important to invest in a golf sim setup?

Projector and Launch monitor. Without the two there is no sim. 

What’s your favorite part of your setup, and why?

The software and projector. Just seeing the graphics and the ball flight is wonderful!.

⛳ The Ultimate Golf Man Cave on a Budget

Thinking about building a sim man cave but not sure where to start? Lukas from Toronto makes a strong case that it’s so worth it. From avoiding the brutal winter to getting in quality family time (and improving his swing along the way), he’s turned his space into a year-round golf haven. His strategy? Invest in a solid launch monitor and let everything else fall into place. Check out how he made it happen—without breaking the bank.

What inspired you to install a golf simulator, and why did you choose your specific location?

Like many others I really caught the golf bug over the Covid-19 lockdowns. Living in Toronto your golf season is only ~6 months and the long winters with no golf were tortuous. My main motivation to install a golf simulator was to be able to stay golfing year-round. I chose to build my simulator in the garage because it was the only suitable space I had access to, and the space was already sort of a ‘man-cave’ so it made sense to add it there.

Walk us through your decision-making process—what factors influenced your choices for the enclosure, launch monitor, software, and other components?

My decision making was very much governed by costs and the available space. I initially was looking for a budget friendly simulator that was functional in a relatively tight garage space. I did research online and watched YouTube videos and eventually decided to purchase a SkyTrak unit. I decided on the TGC 2019 software given the 100k+ courses. I saw local courses I play, as well as world renowned courses on there and thought it would provide never ending variety, which it has. 

The rest of the build has come together piece by piece over time. I got some turf and a hitting mat for free, purchased the projector, enclosure, and impact screen a few years later after originally just hitting into a net and using the TV for visuals.

What was the most difficult part of setting up your sim, and how did you solve it?

The most difficult part was the space constraints. The garage originally had only 8ft ceilings and then space above for storage. This would not allow you to swing anything comfortably. Luckily, the ceiling joists were not load-bearing so were able to remove a section and vault the ceiling up to ~12ft. This allowed us the necessary space to swing comfortably have a simulator.

Where did you spend the most money in your setup, and do you think it was worth it?

The most money was expectedly spent on the simulator itself and the software. I was able to save costs on the other aspects by acquiring them cheaply over time. But the upfront cost of the simulator and software was significant. Despite the price, it was 100% worth it. The amount of time and enjoyment the space has given people has made it worth every penny.

For those on a tight budget, where do you think it’s most important to invest in a golf sim setup?

I would say you should make sure the simulator and software are what you want, and what you will enjoy. It will likely be the biggest expense in the build, but it will also determine how much enjoyment you get out of it. If you buy a simulator that is inaccurate and has many bugs, or software that only has minimal functionality, you will eventually get bored. If you spend a bit more initially and can get years of enjoyment out of the simulator, it’s worth the money. The rest of the build you can do yourself, shop around, cut costs, etc. I would also recommend if you have the money on hand, buying everything at once as a package from an indoor golf company. It can be a great way to save, especially with sales like Black Friday.

If money was limitless, what’s the first thing you’d upgrade?

If money was limitless, I would look to upgrade the simulator itself to a professional quality unit like Trackman or GC Quad. It would be nice to have no second thoughts about whether my yardages and stats are accurate. In addition, if I could add additional space to my area I would—some of my taller friends are still uncomfortable swinging drivers in a small-ish space.

What’s your favorite part of your setup, and why?

The overall enjoyment that I and numerous other family/friends get out of the simulator and the garage more broadly are the best part. There is rarely a day in the winter that someone is not in the garage working on their game, playing a round with friends, watching a sports event, or just hanging out. The total hours of enjoyment that can be attributed to that space is immeasurable and makes the price of the build truly worth every penny.

Ah yes, April Fools’—the one day a year brands unleash their inner class clown. Golf companies (and even some pros) got in on the mischief, delivering a few scroll-stoppers and double-takes across our feeds. Here are our favorite swings at humor from the day:

Carl’s Place

Carl’s Place dropped a “new product” launch: a touchscreen impact screen. Yes, a golf sim that doubles as a massive iPad. Is it a prank... or a prototype we’d actually buy? Honestly, not the worst idea we’ve ever heard.

Full Swing

Full Swing turned the tables and pranked their own engineers. While filming content, every single tee shot registered as a “hole-in-one.” Engineers were stressed, recalibrating, troubleshooting, probably questioning everything.

My Golf Spy

MyGolfSpy dropped a bombshell: LAB Golf is tossing putters aside to enter the driver game. Bold move for the kings of the flatstick. Is it fake? Definitely. Would we still line up to test it? Also yes.

What inspired you to install a golf simulator, and why did you choose your specific location (garage, basement, spare room, etc.)?

I have a habit of going full bore whenever I get into a new hobby—it tends to engross my life for a bit before it levels out. I picked up golf again last summer after a 12-year hiatus and couldn’t get enough of it. If it were up to me, I’d be on the course daily, but that’s not always practical. That’s how my wife and I ended up building a simulator. I now get to play 36 holes daily. We chose the only place in the house that met the space requirements: our enclosed patio/sunroom.

Walk us through your decision-making process—what factors influenced your choices for the enclosure, launch monitor, software, and other components?

The most important aspect to me was functionality, followed closely by cost. When I build something, I like to make sure I’m not sacrificing too many features just to save a few bucks. The SIG8 enclosure, for example, was—at least in my view—the most complete kit for its budget class. For the launch monitor, you can’t beat the Eye Mini Lite when it comes to features like club data and an impact camera, and I got a great deal during their Black Friday sale. All of the other components were chosen with aesthetics in mind.

What was the most difficult part of setting up your sim, and how did you solve it?

The hardest part was figuring out the deck layout. I knew I wanted a fully “turfed” look to make the hitting and landing area seamless and level, but I didn’t want to pay a premium to have the entire deck made of high-quality hitting material since most of it wouldn’t be used for strikes. My solution: build half the deck out of 4x8 plywood and 2x2 joists, then cover it in putting turf to match the height of the Country Club Elite 5x8 mat. I also added a Fiberbuilt Hitting Insert for durability. To finish it off, I raised the SIG8 enclosure to match the deck height by designing and 3D printing custom risers.

Where did you spend the most money in your setup, and do you think it was worth it?

The launch monitor and projector are tied as the most expensive components, which makes sense. I recently upgraded to the BenQ AK700ST—an insanely good projector—but honestly, my free projector worked fine too (just at a lower resolution). If I had to choose, I’d gladly sacrifice projector quality for a better launch monitor.

For those on a tight budget, where do you think it’s most important to invest in a golf sim setup?

Even on a tighter budget, I would’ve still bought the same launch monitor and enclosure. In my opinion, those two elements have the biggest impact on the overall simulator experience and shouldn’t be overlooked.

Bonus tip: hang a couple of cheap black blankets behind your impact screen. They block backlighting, make the image appear brighter, and help mute impact noise.

If money was limitless, what’s the first thing you’d upgrade?

If I had endless cash, I’d go all-in on a complete Golfzon setup just for the dynamic lie deck. You can’t get much closer to real golf indoors than that.

If you could go back and do it again, what would you do differently?

My biggest oversight was spending so much on the Country Club Elite mat. I could’ve built a wooden deck and stuck with just the Fiberbuilt hitting surface for way less money. Plus, I don’t even like hitting off the CCE mat—so that one was kind of a waste.

What’s your favorite part of your setup, and why?

The clean look of the entire setup. It made my wife happy and turned the space into a standout feature in our Fun Room, which now includes a fireplace, custom bar, TV, and workout equipment. Big shoutout to Shop Indoor Golf for making such a great quality enclosure at a solid price.

The confetti’s still settling at SoFi Center, but one thing’s clear: Atlanta Drive GC just etched its name in TGL history—and they did it in the most dramatic way possible.

After Atlanta secured a win in Match 1 on Monday, the second match of the Finals was anyone’s game early on. Neither team scored until Hole 7, where New York took the lead—and by the 11th hole, Atlanta found itself trailing 3-0. But with all three Hammers still in hand, they had plenty of firepower left—and they used it brilliantly.

The comeback began on Hole 12, when Patrick Cantlay stuck his tee shot to 4 feet. Atlanta threw the Hammer, and New York declined. On the 13th, they threw it again after Xander Schauffele landed in the bunker. New York declined again.

Then came the dagger.

Atlanta threw their final Hammer on Hole 14. Billy Horschel stepped up and drained a 17-foot birdie to take the lead—and the first ever SoFi Cup.

And just like that, the first season of TGL is in the books. Here are some memorable moments from Tuesday: 

Best Hot Mic: “This is my f—ing house!” - Billy Horschel after hitting his 17 foot putt and winning the SoFi cup. His recap of what happened after may be even better tho. 

Most Tense Moment: Things nearly boiled over on Hole 8 when Schauffele threw the Hammer just as Justin Thomas was about to putt—prompting a quick rules check. Officials ruled the Hammer was valid, but not before a little chirping and a whole lot of tension.

Best Shot: Other than the obvious 17-foot putt, we will give it to Patrick Cantlay on the 15th—his chip shot from behind the bunker on the 15th to make sure Atlanta kept their lead was stunning.

⛳ Hey, Google, it’s golf time: Breaking Down an Epic Garage Sim Setup

When Matt set out to build his golf simulator, he wasn’t just looking for a place to practice—he wanted a fully integrated, space-saving, and smart home-compatible setup that worked seamlessly in his garage. With a mix of ingenuity, home automation, and DIY problem-solving, he pulled off a build that’s both functional and high-tech.

We sat down with Matt to get the full breakdown—from budget spreadsheets to projection calculators and floor plan tools. This interview is packed with insights and resources, so buckle up!

What inspired you to install a golf simulator, and why did you choose your specific location (garage, basement, spare room, etc.)?

My town doesn’t have any golf courses—both of the ones nearby closed during COVID. I wanted to play more often, but traveling to either of the two remaining courses—one with only a driving range and no putting green, and the other with a putting green but no driving range—wasn’t ideal.

When I heard about the Square launch monitor and its capabilities for the price, I was compelled to try it out. I chose my garage because it was the only space that could fit a golf simulator. We don’t have a spare room in our house, and the Square LM is an indoor-only launch monitor, so the garage was my only option.

Walk us through your decision-making process—what factors influenced your choices for the enclosure, launch monitor, software, and other components?

The build had several moving parts—each decision impacted the others. Since I use my garage for projects, hobbies, and parking, I knew I needed a retractable setup. After testing different layouts, I settled on a back-right placement with the golfer positioned under the garage door motor. To visualize my setup, I used virtual-graph-paper.com (found on r/golfsimulator) to map everything to scale before finalizing placements.

Screen & Enclosure: I combined a hockey screen roller from The SportScreen with a premium impact screen from Spectrum Golf—a DIY solution that saved money while integrating with smart home assistants.

Projector Placement: With 9’2” ceilings and The SportScreen mounted 8” below, I had 8’6” of vertical space. Using ProjectorCentral’s calculator, I determined the projector needed to be 15–18 feet away. Since the garage door blocked a centered mount, I tested placement with a king-sized bedsheet (approved by my wife, of course) and ultimately mounted the projector as close to the back wall and garage tracks as possible.

Retractable Side Enclosures: Traditional roller screens were too pricey, so I repurposed a bendable curtain I-rail from a previous home office setup. It tucks away when not in use.

Ceiling Protection: My garage has fire-code sprinkler heads, meaning I couldn't use thick padding or nets. My fix? Thin OSB + sound-deadening carpet padding (¾” thick) with a sprinkler cage.

Launch Monitor & Software: The Square LM was a no-brainer—feature-packed and budget-friendly. I run GSPro and Awesome Golf, which complement each other and offer different strengths.

What was the most difficult part of setting up your sim, and how did you solve it?

Definitely figuring out how to stream my gaming PC (located in my office) to the garage setup.

A long HDMI cable and USB hub could have worked, but I wanted a more elegant solution. As a software engineer and tinkerer, I had a Raspberry Pi 3B+ lying around and thought, why not use it to handle the streaming?

I used Sunshine (a free streaming host) and Moonlight (a streaming client) to make it happen. However, since my Raspberry Pi was outdated, I had to do a ton of troubleshooting to get it running smoothly. If I were to do it again, I’d just buy a Raspberry Pi 4 or a small desktop PC to save myself hours of frustration.

I also automated the entire startup process using smart plugs, Google Assistant, and a few scripts. Now, when I say “Hey Google, it’s golf time”, everything powers on automatically.

Where did you spend the most money in your setup, and was it worth it?

My launch monitor was the most expensive item, followed closely by the roller bar + impact screen. But the Square LM was absolutely worth it—it’s affordable, highly accurate, and handles chipping and putting better than much pricier options.

For those on a budget, where should you invest the most?

Your hitting surface. Too many people use cheap $50 Amazon mats or thin fake grass carpet, but you can build a great hitting surface for $200.

My DIY hitting mat setup:

• $55 for a 95lb vulcanized rubber 4x6ft mat

• Some caulk + scrap putting turf

• A replaceable hitting strip from Gungho or similar

This approach saves money long-term since you only replace the hitting strip instead of an entire $700+ mat

If money was no object, what’s the first thing you’d upgrade?

I’d upgrade my Raspberry Pi setup to a real gaming PC and get a 4K projector.

What’s your favorite part of your setup?

The automation, hands down. Being able to say “Hey Google, it’s golf time” and watch everything power up, roll down, and sync automatically is just so satisfying. It also maximizes my practice time, making it easy to hop in for quick sessions.

My cousin built the frame for the floor and set up the impact screen, but there were a lot of discussions about height and width concerns. To get a better idea of what I needed, I watched a ton of YouTube videos and joined r/GolfSimulator. That helped me figure out the key factors to consider.

What was the most difficult part of setting up your sim, and how did you solve it?

The projector setup. I didn’t fully understand that I had a short-throw projector, so I spent hours tinkering—mounting, reinforcing, and then tearing it down to reposition it. Eventually, I ended up cutting a hole in the platform on the ground, and now it’s perfect.

Where did you spend the most money in your setup, and do you think it was worth it?

The Bushnell Launch Pro (BLP). Initially, I had a Garmin R10, but the chipping issues made it feel like I was only playing half of a round. The BLP has been fantastic, so I’d say it was absolutely worth it.

For those on a tight budget, where do you think it's most important to invest in a golf sim setup?

The mat! If you’re planning to hit 8,000 balls a month like I do, invest in something with proper shock absorption. I cut a 12x34 strip out of a cheap, sturdy mat and replaced it with a more forgiving surface. Your joints will thank you.

If money was limitless, what’s the first thing you’d upgrade?

I’d love to go with a top-of-the-line launch monitor, but honestly, I’m happy with what I have.

If you could go back and do it again, what would you do differently?

I’d do everything the same—but in way less time.

What’s your favorite part of your setup, and why?

The automation. I have a motion sensor that turns on the computer and projector, then starts up GSPro. I can be hitting balls within 1-2 minutes of walking through the door.

The action kicks off Monday, March 17, with LA taking on NY in one Semifinal, while Atlanta and The Bay battle for a spot in the championship.

Here’s how we got here:

LA vs. The Bay (5-3)

Best Shot: Sahith Theegala’s 20-foot chip-in for birdie at No. 12 was the spark that ignited LA’s comeback. Under pressure, with the No. 1 seed on the line, he delivered—and his dad’s legendary dance in the crowd made it even better. Pure clutch.

Hot Mic Moment: Schauffele doing his best Adam Scott impression was top-tier comedy: "My name’s Adam Scott, and I am extremely good-looking, mate. Everything I do is perfection. Alright, baby, we are dancing now."

Jupiter vs. Atlanta 

Best Shot: Nick Dunlap’s first TGL match, and he made it count. The 2023 U.S. Amateur champ showed up big, but his moment of the night? A pinpoint approach that had Horschel FaceTiming JT to let him know he was 'replaced.' Cold-blooded.

Hot Mic Moment: Billy Horschel and Tiger Woods joking about the crowd booing Atlanta (0:16) was gold. Then again, it IS Tiger’s hometown.

And just Like that…the TGL regular season is over

Where is ParSims currently located? Are there specific regions or cities with growing demand?

We are still in a soft launch mode, but we are seeing demand from many areas of the country. Initially we started in Utah but quickly realized that there is great demand for this concept nationwide. We now have hosts in 18 different States and are allowing anyone across the country to join the fun ahead of our official launch. 

Are there minimum requirements for hosts’ setups, such as specific launch monitors, software, or space dimensions? 

Our requirements are simple. A projector w/screen, and any type of launch monitor. We have had 5-star reviews for both budget and highend setups. A large bucket of balls is anywhere from $10-$15 dollars. If you could use a private setup nearby for the same price, why wouldn’t you? Especially if the weather makes it unplayable outside.

What’s the most impressive or unique simulator setup you’ve seen listed on ParSims? 

I would say Seth’s setup in Solon, IA. Seth has a full building that has a half court basketball court, an upstairs lounge, AND a golf simulator. It also has a projector above the hoop that you can watch things on. Go check out the walkthrough video on our instagram.

Have you noticed any trends in how or where hosts are setting up their simulators? (e.g. popular types of equipment or spaces) 

It seems that a lot of people are piecing together simulators instead of going with sim kits. Not that there is anything wrong with a sim kit, but there is something to be said for picking out exactly what you want for all your components. The technology is interesting as more affordable launch monitors hit the market. After going to the PGA show this year, there are lots of new options that are very competitive. As far as location goes, most of the hosts on ParSims have their simulators in either a garage or a shed. 

Can you share your favorite story about a host finding success through ParSims? 

Our very first host that joined ParSims has had over 60 golfers come to use his setup and he has used his earnings to make his setup even better. Originally it was only for right handers, and he made his shed bigger to accommodate left handers as well. Along with making his shed bigger, he also upgraded his seating, added an outdoor urinal, and purchased swing cameras. He’s got an absolute killer setup and his price is only $25/hr!!

What should potential hosts know or consider before listing their simulator on ParSims? 

Hosting on ParSims is golf’s easiest side hustle. Potential hosts should consider: - “How often do I use my sim?” - “How can I get a return on my investment besides improving my game?” - “Do I enjoy showing off my hard work? - “Does making an extra $1k/month sound appealing to me?” - “Do I have a few minutes a day to respond to golfer requests?” Our platform really does make it simple and straightforward to rent out your simulator. Hosts set the price, make their own rules, and fully control availability. Anytime a golfer wants to use your setup, the host will get to approve or reject the golfers booking request. Hosts/golfers can message directly in our platform and get to review each other after every booking. 

For peace of mind, the platform has terms of service every user agrees to that protects the host. The platform will soon offer a host protection guarantee of up to 50k and if there is any concern about strangers, hosts can leverage our guest verification process for additional peace of mind.

What’s the typical hourly rate for simulator rentals, and how does it vary by region or setup? 

The typical hourly rate is $30 an hour. It varies by setup and the hosts get to choose what their hourly rate is going to be. We always recommend between $20-$30 dollars an hour just because we are starting out and that is a really good price for an hour on a simulator! 

What should players bring or plan for to ensure a great experience? 

Players should read the rules of the simulator first to make sure they can wear golf shoes, bring food/beverage or if they need to bring golf balls. Typically, players just need to bring their clubs. A lot of hosts have buckets and towels to clean clubs and allow normal golf shoes. Hosts typically also provide golf balls and allow food/beverage but we always recommend double checking the rules of each host just to make sure. 

What’s the most common feedback you receive from players using ParSims? 

We have only received glowing remarks from players using ParSims. We are providing a platform that makes simulator golf more accessible and affordable for the everyday golfer. One of our golfers said this “I’ll start by saying this is my dream garage set-up. Coupled with a first-class host, this Simulator experience was God Tier.” Golfers are loving affordable access to indoor golf. 

What are the most common reasons people book simulators—parties, practice, lessons, or something else? 

Most of our customers just want to practice/play a round with some friends or by themselves. Lessons are coming soon and will be a huge add on when we get there. Most of our host setups can accommodate up to 4 people at once. 

What’s the most memorable experience or feedback you’ve heard from someone who rented through ParSims? 

One of our customers found us through our socials and decided to check us out and book a couple of hours on our simulator in West Jordan. They played for a couple of hours and decided they were having so much fun that they didn’t want to leave! They got on our website and booked another two hours. After spending FOUR hours at the simulator the friends decided they still hadn’t had enough and booked ANOTHER hour. That’s right, FIVE hours straight these guys played on Jeremy’s simulator. Here is the review they left “10/10 Man this place was so so sick me and my friends couldn’t stop smiling . You won’t regret playing golf here period !!!”

1. The Tech Needs Major Upgrades

For a league that leans into its high-tech appeal, Redditors are finding that the tech itself is not "up to par." Ball tracking is inconsistent, launch monitor data sometimes seems off, and fans have a hard time following where shots actually land. When you’re promised cutting-edge technology but get wonky visuals, that’s a tough pill to swallow.

TGL has the freedom to create anything, so why does it feel more constrained than real-world layouts?

4. The Broadcast Lacks Key Information

TGL has the potential to be data-rich, but the broadcast doesn’t reflect that. Fans want real-time stats—club selection, shot shape, ball speed, distance, spin. Instead, they’re left squinting at the background scoreboard, missing out on the kind of analytics that make simulator golf fun to follow. The broadcast needs to be as tech-driven as the format itself.

5. LPGA Players Need to Be Included

This is a big one. Fans see a major opportunity for TGL to be more inclusive by integrating LPGA players into the mix. It would diversify the competition, bring in new audiences, and make the league feel more representative of the golf world as a whole. Right now, it feels like a boys' club, and that’s a missed opportunity.

• Dynamic Course Adjustments – Implement Golfzon-style tilting floors to simulate different lie angles. The green also needs variety—right now, it’s just one large plateau with minimal adjustments. – u/simpsator

• Amateur vs. Pro Showdowns – Create a “Joes vs. Schmoes” format where top amateur teams compete in a qualifying round for the chance to face a pro team in the finals. Online sim golf tournaments could be a feeder system. – u/hamburgersink
