Billionaire hedge fund manager David Tepper, founder of Appaloosa Management, is making waves again—this time with a bold bet on Chinese stocks. In a recent interview on CNBC, Tepper made it clear that he’s loading up on Chinese equities, citing the country’s unprecedented fiscal and monetary stimulus.

Tepper, worth some $20 billion thanks in part to his “Buy Everything” call on US stocks in 2010, is a man worth listening to.

While Chinese stocks have been stagnant for years, Tepper’s “buy everything” approach is now focusing on some of China’s biggest tech names.

Here’s why he’s bullish on four major players: Alibaba Group (BABA), Tencent Holdings (TCEHY), JD.com (JD), and Baidu Inc. (BIDU).

David Tepper’s portfolio is heavily weighted towards Alibaba, with a massive increase in holdings during 2024. His reasoning? Alibaba is significantly undervalued, trading at a forward earnings multiple of less than 9.5. This level of value is almost unheard of for a tech stock of Alibaba’s caliber, especially one with double-digit growth prospects.

Tepper also appreciates Alibaba's strong AI positioning, citing its leadership in cloud computing and artificial intelligence. In May, CEO Eddie Wu highlighted that AI will drive the company’s growth, with Alibaba poised to benefit from hosting AI applications on its cloud platform .

In addition, Tepper pointed out that Alibaba's stock, even after recent gains, is still at levels comparable to 2007, making it an excellent buy given China's internal stimulus.

The People's Bank of China's policies—including interest rate cuts, liquidity support, and encouraging stock buybacks—are providing a strong tailwind. With the government supporting corporate buybacks, Alibaba’s large cash reserves and undervalued stock make it an ideal candidate for significant appreciation.

Tencent Holdings is another giant in Tepper's China portfolio, benefiting from the same macroeconomic trends driving Alibaba. Like Alibaba, Tencent is a dominant player in China’s tech ecosystem, with a portfolio spanning gaming, social media, and fintech. Tepper sees Tencent’s diverse revenue streams as a key advantage, especially with the Chinese government rolling out aggressive fiscal stimulus aimed at boosting consumption.

Tepper also noted that Tencent, trading at historically low valuation multiples, offers double-digit growth prospects. As China’s economy begins to rebound from a prolonged slump, companies like Tencent are poised to capitalize on rising consumer spending, particularly in digital entertainment and online services.

Furthermore, Tencent has been encouraged by the Chinese government to conduct stock buybacks, providing a potential catalyst for significant share price growth.

JD.com, China’s second-largest e-commerce company, has also captured Tepper’s attention. JD is known for its robust logistics network and focus on high-quality products, which differentiate it from its competitors. Tepper dramatically increased his stake in JD.com, driven by the company’s strong fundamentals and its ability to benefit from China’s internal consumption-focused stimulus.

JD is trading at a steep discount compared to U.S. tech peers, offering single-digit P/E ratios alongside impressive growth. The government’s liquidity support and promotion of stock buybacks will likely further enhance JD’s ability to compete, making it an appealing long-term play for investors like Tepper who are focused on value.

Bull Case:

Baidu, often referred to as the “Google of China,” has a strong presence in search engine technology and is quickly becoming a leader in artificial intelligence. Tepper has expressed bullish sentiment on Baidu, particularly due to its deep investments in AI. Baidu’s forays into autonomous driving and its AI-powered cloud services position it for growth as China pivots toward more technology-driven industries.

With China’s fiscal stimulus creating a fertile environment for tech expansion, Baidu’s exposure to both consumer and enterprise markets makes it one of Tepper’s top picks. Like Alibaba and Tencent, Baidu is trading at historically low multiples, providing a rare opportunity to buy into a company with solid long-term growth potential at an attractive price.

Tepper’s conviction comes at a time when China’s government is pulling out all the stops to revive its economy. The country's recent stimulus measures include interest-rate cuts, liquidity injections, and, perhaps most notably, encouragement for companies to buy back stock. In Tepper’s eyes, this “internal stimulus” creates a unique environment where undervalued Chinese equities can soar, regardless of external pressures like potential U.S. tariffs .

He’s also clear about the risks. Tepper acknowledges the tense U.S.-China relations but dismisses them as a primary concern. As he explained, these issues are mitigated by China’s internal focus on economic recovery. He believes that China’s commitment to stimulating its economy and promoting stock buybacks presents a significant opportunity for investors willing to look past the political noise.

Today we’re continuing this week’s series on how to profit off the massive disconnect between domestic and foreign natural gas prices.

We’ve already covered why this situation exists and identified our publicly-traded investment options.

Now, we’re going to look at these options from a technical and fundamental perspective.

Let’s do this.

Cheniere Energy recently broke out from what technical traders call a “saucer” formation. This is a very bullish development technically and implies that an acceleration of upside momentum is underway. The pattern is projecting a rally as high as 225.00-230.00.

Taking a look at LNG’s operations, things are expected to remain stable for Cheniere Energy until growth picks up in late 2024. The company will continue supplying natural gas to its existing international customers, but has limited extra supply for the spot market, where prices are usually higher. However, Cheniere could ramp up additional production later this year, including bringing Train 1 of the Sabine Pass mid-size trains online, provided construction stays on track. In the meantime, costs are anticipated to remain consistent, although a focus on debt reduction should boost profitability by lowering interest expenses in the coming quarters. The company also benefited from elevated fuel prices throughout 2023, and earnings are projected to reach $10.00+ per share this year.

Looking towards the end of the decade, Cheniere’s growth will be fueled by its ongoing capital projects. The company aims to complete seven mid-size trains at Sabine Pass by 2026 and has proposed further expansions at other facilities. Reducing debt remains a priority, which should continue to cut interest expenses.

Additionally, a strong share buyback program, including the recent repurchase of 7.5 million shares for approximately $1.2 billion, is expected to drive growth in earnings per share. Forecasts suggest earnings could rise to $13.50 per share in 2025 and reach $17.00 per share between 2027 and 2029.

LNG is a strong contender.

Chevron broke down from an inverted saucer pattern, but satisfied the downside projection in the 140.00-142.00 zone. But now we have a case of bullish divergence in price from the RSI indicator at the August 12 low, signaling that downside momentum has waned. If CVX rises back above 152.00-154.00, it will turn bullish again.

Chevron's merger with Hess has been delayed by approximately six months. The two companies have pushed back their anticipated completion date from April 18th to October 22nd due to additional information requests from the Federal Trade Commission.

Despite these challenges, Chevron remains confident in closing the deal, asserting that Exxon's claims are not relevant in this context. Hess shareholders, as of April 12th, are set to vote on the merger on May 28th. The original $53 billion deal was reached last October. If the transaction is completed, it would strengthen Chevron's asset portfolio and begin contributing to cash flow per share starting in 2025. The combined entity is also expected to ramp up initiatives aimed at enhancing shareholder returns.

In other developments, Chevron reported lower sales and earnings per share in the first quarter. The decline was driven by narrower margins in refined product sales and lower natural gas prices. However, increased upstream sales volumes in the United States and a 12% rise in global production provided some offset. Nonetheless, projections for full-year 2024 have been adjusted downward, with expected sales and earnings per share now forecasted to decline by 3% and 6%, respectively.

Exxon Mobil is postured in a very bullish manner here with prices on the precipice of breaking out from a cup and handle formation. A close above 120.00-121.00 would be very bullish and could lead to another leg higher into the 150.00-155.00.

Exxon Mobil posted stronger-than-expected earnings in the first quarter of 2024, reporting $2.06 per share, surpassing the earlier forecast of $1.80. Despite narrower refining margins due to lower commodity prices, effective cost controls and operational enhancements supported profitability. Additionally, robust upstream production, particularly in Guyana, along with the expansion at the Beaumont refinery, contributed positively. As a result, the full-year earnings estimate has been raised by $0.25, bringing it to $9.50 per share. Exxon Mobil's stock has been trading near record highs, having rebounded over 10% since late February and continuing to fluctuate between $95 and $120.

The company recently completed its acquisition of Pioneer Natural Resources, with Pioneer shareholders receiving 2.3234 shares of Exxon Mobil for each share owned. This acquisition significantly increases Exxon’s footprint in the Permian Basin. It’s interest that, in accordance with FTC conditions, Pioneer’s CEO is barred from joining Exxon’s board due to past allegations of collusion with OPEC officials.

Looking forward, Exxon Mobil remains well-positioned for sustained success. Traditional oil and gas operations are expected to perform well, supported by favorable macroeconomic trends and steady consumer demand, despite the outlook for softer commodity prices.

Moreover, the company’s accelerated focus on alternative energy is set to pay off, with recent investments directed toward lithium battery technologies, carbon capture, and expanding solar and wind projects. Overall, these strategic moves should result in a well-diversified energy portfolio by the late 2020s.

Shell is testing resistance of a broadening wedge formation. These are momentum patterns, and if it can manage a close above 74.00-75.00, then a measured move into the 90.00-92.00 zone should follow at the least.

Shell experienced a strong recovery in its earnings during the first quarter of 2024. After a challenging end to 2023, the energy giant began the year on a positive note, with earnings of $2.28 per ADR, significantly exceeding expectations and showing a substantial improvement from the previous period. Refining margins remained solid despite volatile commodity prices, and a reduction in operating costs further boosted profitability. As a result, the full-year earnings forecast has been revised upward to $7.45 per ADR, compared to the earlier estimate of $6.65.

Investor sentiment towards Shell is increasingly positive. Over the past three months, the ADRs have gained over 15% in value, reaching new 52-week highs and levels not seen since before the pandemic. Additionally, Shell’s shareholder-friendly policies remain intact. The company has been actively reducing its ADR count and is likely to continue its stock buyback program. Moreover, even at its current elevated price, Shell’s dividend yield remains well above average.

In a strategic move, Shell is divesting its refinery and petrochemical assets in Singapore. The sale includes a refinery and an ethylene plant, which will be acquired by an Indonesia-based joint venture and Glencore for an undisclosed sum. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2024.

TotalEnergies has gone through a corrective rally over the past 3 months or so, and in the process, formed a falling wedge formation. If prices break above the upper trendline of the pattern, then a rally up to the 84.00-85.00 area could follow.

TotalEnergies has seen a strong rise in its stock price over the last three months, with its ADRs gaining around 15% as investors have responded positively to the company’s recent financial results. The stock has recently reached new 52-week highs and is trading at levels not seen in nearly a decade.

First-quarter results were solid, particularly considering the challenges of fluctuating commodity prices. TotalEnergies posted sales of $56.3 billion for the quarter, slightly below expectations. However, earnings of $2.40 per ADR represented a 9% year-over-year increase and comfortably exceeded consensus forecasts. This growth was driven by strong refining margins, stable production, and lower inventory costs. Analysts expect EPS to come in between $7-$8 per share this year.

The company plans to continue its stock buybacks, supported by its recent profitability. Management has announced a new buyback authorization and has also committed to annual increases in the quarterly dividend. While investments in alternative energy are expected to rise over the long term, traditional oil and gas operations will remain the primary growth engines.

All in all, TotalEnergies is poised to make further advances in low-carbon technologies, battery storage, and power generation solutions. In the near term, both downstream and upstream operations (including the export of LNG) are likely to accelerate as global energy demand grows under more favorable macroeconomic conditions.

With over $38 billion invested in its infrastructure, Cheniere operates two major LNG facilities along the Gulf Coast—Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi—capable of producing millions of tonnes of LNG annually.

The company’s growth strategy is driven by long-term contracts with foreign buyers, ensuring stable cash flows that are used to expand operations and reward shareholders. Cheniere’s focus on sustainability, including partnerships to deliver carbon-neutral LNG, positions it well in the global energy transition.

By 2030, ExxonMobil aims to double its LNG output, further solidifying its position in the global market.

Shell has long been a dominant force in the LNG market, with projects spanning 10 countries and a robust marketing and distribution network. With new projects in Qatar and Canada, Shell is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for LNG.

Sorry doomsayers, the unwinding of the “carry trade” can’t derail America’s manufacturing renaissance.

Recently, the U.S. stock market experienced a correction. The S&P 500 fell 6.6%, the Dow dropped 5%, and the Nasdaq decreased by 11.3% from their recent highs. The financial media is pointing the finger on a "margin call" triggered by the unwinding of trillions of dollars in "Carry Trade" bets.

The "Carry Trade" is driven by Japan's long-term 0% interest rate policy. 

Traders borrow money in Japanese Yen and reinvest it in higher-yielding currencies. For example, they might borrow Yen at 0%, convert it to dollars, and buy U.S. 1-Year T-Bills yielding 4.5%. It seems like free money.

However, on July 31, 2024, Japan's Central Bank raised interest rates from 0% to 0.25%.

Wait, what? That’s it? My portfolio took a hit because Japan increased interest rates by a lousy quarter point?

Japan’s interest rate increase may not seem like much. But for traders, it means the end of a highly leveraged situation.

After the rate hike, the Yen surged over 5% against the dollar. While this might not sound like a lot, for traders leveraged 10:1, it means a 50% loss on their equity in a short-Yen position.

As usual, this led to a wave of selling as positions were unwound.

Predictably, the media started claiming a recession was imminent.

Nonsense.

It's true that economic growth in Europe and China has been weak for various reasons both fundamental and demographic.

But in my view, this pullback is just a small bump in the road for America’s ongoing industrial growth.

After all, we’re only recently getting back to where we were before the Great Financial Crisis (GFC).

I’m not alone.

Billionaire Venture Capitalist and Early Facebook VP of User Growth Chamath Palihapitiya made a similar point on an X post:

I couldn’t have said it better.

So if you’ve been anxious the past week, don’t panic.

There are issues to be worked through, not the least of which are the prospect that interest rates will be higher-for-longer if for no other reason that demand for capital is high in a deindustrialization environment.

A born-and-raised Ohioan, I now reside in Arlington, VA with my wife and three children. 

I’ve always loved investing. I still remember the day I walked into my local library and saw the book on full display “How to Pick Stocks Like Warren Buffett”. I quickly learned that this man with turtle-shell glasses on the cover was worth a stunning $30 billion (at the time) all from investing. 

That day started me off on my journey as an entrepreneur/investor. 

A few more things you should know (in no particular order): 

• Graduated with a degree in Finance from Case Western Reserve University in May 2008. 

• After brief stints at the investment bank Houlihan Smith (now Houlihan Capital) and as a Manager at American Income Life (Subsidiary of Globe Life (NYSE: GL), I found my way to the Motley Fool as a stock market analyst/editor on the fool.com team. 

• While at the Motley Fool, I also became a podcast host (MF’s Consumer Goods, Tech, and Energy shows 3 days a week) and financial copywriter. 

• In 2018, something amazing happened. I met Chris Lustrino who asked me to help him build KingsCrowd to be a kind of “Bloomberg Terminal” providing data and analytics on the then brand-new investment crowdfunding market (more on this later). 

•  As the CMO of KingsCrowd, I oversaw the growth of our community and business from concept to 350,000.

• It was also during my 4 years full-time at KingsCrowd that I got to see first hand what it takes to raise millions from both accredited investors and “the crowd”. 

Which brings us to today. 

The world is changing faster than ever. Old rules are being cast out and technology continues to reshape our economy just as much as the political landscape does. A new framework is required. 

To build this framework, I’m going to be employing the thoughts and insights of geopolitical analyst Peter Zeihan. Mr. Zeihan gained prominence a few years ago when he predicted that by 2022 Russia would invade Ukraine. How did he hit the nail on the head? He uses two simple tools to predict the future: 

(1) Demographics and 

(2) Geography. 

In the future I’ll be referencing his thoughts and drawing investment conclusions from them (Zeihan himself refuses to make investment recommendations).

This, combined with the tactics and insights from my favorite investors, should make for compelling reading at the very least.

Zeihan’s analysis, along with what we can see from the data, gives reason for optimism about the United States going forward. Of all the major economies, the United States continues to put up solid growth #s:

For reasons that we’ll expand on in a future post, there are reasons to take the growth figures of China with a grain of salt. 

Part of the global change we’re witnessing is a massive reshoring of manufacturing to North America, which explains U.S. manufacturing growth despite a massive increase in interest rates since March 2022. 

“Industrial production rose 0.6 percent in June after advancing 0.9 percent in May. For the second quarter as a whole, industrial production increased at an annual rate of 4.3 percent. Manufacturing output moved up 0.4 percent in June and rose 3.4 percent (annual rate) in the second quarter. In June, the indexes for mining and utilities posted gains of 0.3 percent and 2.8 percent, respectively. At 104 percent of its 2017 average, total industrial production in June was 1.6 percent above its year-earlier level.” -Federal Reserve Board of Governors July 17, 2024 Industrial Production and Capacity Utilization Report

Put simply, Dropbox's core business remains solid and it’s using excess cash flows to invest in enhanced products and services powered by AI.
